Eldest son gets siblings out 

as fire rips through house

A SPREYDON family won’t be 

celebrating Christmas quite like 

they had thought, after their 

home was severely damaged by 

fire.

Ra, 13, Brax, 

11, and Mana, 

9, are in 

emergency accommodation 

after a blaze 

swept through 

the Lyttelton St property. 

The fire started in the laundry 

at 8.30pm on November 26 

while Leslie was at work. 

“My three boys were with the 

babysitter . . . and said they’d 

smelt the smoke first before 

flames came from the laundry. 

Once the fire took hold of the 

curtains, my boys freaked out 

and ran outside. 

“I am proud 

of my eldest

out safely, and

Within 10 minutes of the fire 

breaking out, the fire and emergency 

team arrived at the scene 

but it was too late – the fire had 

devastated all of the rooms except 

for two, which were badly 

damaged by the smoke. 

Nothing in the house survived, 

bar the clothes on the 

family’s back. 

Said Leslie: “Unfortunately, 

my insurance will not cover 

everything. Some things are 

irreplaceable – like sentimental 

pieces left by my mum and dad 

who died, respectively, in 1994 

and 2001. 

“We don’t have a home to go 

to – it’s still very fresh and quite 

raw and overwhelming but 

I’m trying to be strong for my 

children. 

“This Christmas will be hard, 

we have no plans whatsoever 

now. We were going to have a 

big cheesy family Christmas, 

with all of us in matching 

shirts. I’d just bought them 

too.” 

She said the fire investigators 

haven’t yet found the ignition 

source. 

A Fire and Emergency 

spokesperson said an 

investigation into the incident 

is ongoing. 

The family has been 

placed into emergency 

accommodation in Papanui 

until they can find a place to 

rent. 

Said Leslie: “My boss has 

been amazing as she put us 

in a b&b until (emergency) 

accommodation became 

available. The community has 

been super supportive, they’ve 

been more than willing to help 

out.”

Final stage of Cashmere 

dam close to completion 

THE FINAL stage of the 

Cashmere Worsleys Valley flood 

storage facility in the upper 

catchment of the Ōpāwaho 

Heathcote River is nearing 

completion. 

The facility has progressed 

in stages – the upper part of 

the valley has been open to 

the public for about 18 months 

and is well-established with 

native planting, providing a 

recreational area for the 

public. 

The final stage of the project, 

Cashmere Valley dam, is close 

to finished. 

Said city council head of three 

waters Brent Smith: “Works 

left to be completed include 

(the) remaining landscaping – 

some paths and wetland/shrub 

planting. Larger trees will be 

planted in autumn. 

“The mechanical and 

electrical commissioning of the 

control gate will take place in 

early 2024.” 

The dam is expected to be 

fully commissioned in early 

2024, allowing the benefits of 

the facility to be realised, and 

delivering enhanced protection 

against flooding for residents 

that live close to the Ōpāwaho 

Heathcote River downstream of 

the facility. 

“Residents will also be 

able to enjoy the enhanced 

environment through the 

extensive native planting, which 

is attracting more wildlife 

and additional recreational 

opportunities,” said Smith. 

“Benefits include enhanced 

environmental assets, increased 

biodiversity and recreational 

opportunities. The project is 

part of the Upper Heathcote 

flood storage programme that 

was started in response to 

the flooding experienced in 

2013/14. 

“Combined with Te Kuru, 

Wigram Basin and Curletts 

Basin, this programme 

of work helps to provide 

significant capacity to store 

stormwater during significant 

rainfall events and reduce the 

likelihood of flooding in the 

Ōpawaho River catchment.” 

The areas of the Cashmere 

Valley currently closed off for 

construction are expected to 

be open to the public by the 

Christmas break, with the 

lower and upper valleys linked 

to form a cohesive network of 

paths and native planting.

Games in Christchurch. 

And now one of the distinctive 

Holden Kingswoods will be 

part of the Santa Parade in New 

Brighton on Saturday. 

The Kingswood is the New 

Brighton Museum’s showpiece in 

the parade. 

Museum president Wayne 

Hawker said the vehicle is “the 

jewel in their crown”. 

“After the games, the Kingswoods 

were sold off. This 

particular vehicle was bought by 

the Freakish family and has been 

owned by the same family ever 

since. 

“While its owner, Clint, is 

based in Nelson, parents Paul and 

Heather care for the car which is 

based here.”

Cycleway 

from city to 

Heathcote 

now open 

A NEW section of the Heathcote 

cycleway is now open, from The 

Tannery to the Heathcote Valley. 

In a ribbon-cutting ceremony 

on Friday, the Puari ki Kahuhura 

Heathcote Expressway’s second section 

was opened. 

It runs from The Tannery along 

Cumnor Tce beside the Ōpāwaho 

Heathcote River, then onto Vaila Pl 

before cutting through Kennaway 

Reserve along State Highway 74. 

It then crosses Scruttons Rd 

before following the railway tracks 

past Ferrymead Heritage Park to 

Truscotts Rd and Martindales Rd. 

The first section of the cycleway, 

connecting the central city to The 

Tannery, opened in 2019. 

The new section includes a mix 

of pathway and boardwalks, as well 

as new fencing along the route, 

lighting for visibility and two new 

railway crossings. 

Said Heathcote councillor Sara 

Templeton: “I am so thrilled to 

see this cycleway open, it has been 

hugely anticipated by the local community 

and will provide another 

safe option for people to use.” 

The project cost $13.8 million 

with $8.2m from Rau Paenga 

through the Government’s shovel 

ready programme. 

Coastal Pathway worth wait 

THE FINAL section of the 

Coastal Pathway has officially 

opened to the public, marking 

the completion of the decadelong 

project. 

Deputy mayor Pauline Cotter 

said the already completed 

sections of the pathway have 

been attracting about 16,000 

users a month, and that’s 

expected to increase. 

The final section of the 

pathway in Moncks Bay was 

opened in a ribbon-cutting 

ceremony last Thursday. 

The pathway will make the 

route from the city to Sumner 

more accessible for nonmotoring 

transit.

project has been a physically 

challenging one,” said Cotter. 

“The finished product is a 

beautiful asset to the whole city, 

and we’re sure it’s more than 

worth the hassle.” 

The concept for the pathway 

was approved by the city 

council in 2013 and was made 

possible with support from 

the Government’s shovel ready 

project fund. 

“The pathway is an example of 

the community taking the lead 

and working together with the 

council to get a great result.” 

The pathway has been a joint 

project between the council and

used to see itself as a gateway to 

other South Island tourist spots. 

However, the reality is that it is 

in a stunningly beautiful and 

interesting setting in its own 

right,” said Sander. 

He hopes the pathway will 

encourage visitors to stay longer 

in the coastal areas made more 

accessible.
