NEW ZEALAND 3
The mayor who defied
odds: Gurunathan
Krishnasamy
NAVDEEP KAUR MARWAH
Gurunathan Krishnasamy, the courageous mayor
of Kapiti, has sparked more than a few storms
in his time, but none quite as electrifying as his
induction into Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame for 2023.
For Gurunathan, it’s not just a trophy on the shelf.
“The award frames a sense of personal satisfaction.
This award has had a deeper impact because it comes
from my own cultural community.
“I’m humbled that my journey has made a small
contribution to the collective success of the Kiwi-
Indian community navigating a future in Aotearoa New
Zealand,” he says, a glint of pride in his eyes.
It’s a celebration of overcoming discrimination and a
testament to the power of resilience.
In a candid interview, Gurunathan doesn’t hold back.
“This award isn’t just about me; it’s about inspiring
others. These are testimonials to impassion, encourage
and inspire others to blaze their own trails.
“Given the rise of India on the global stage, the
relevance of the Kiwi-Indian community to the rest of
Aotearoa, New Zealand, is also bound to increase,” he
says.
Born in 1952 in Malaysia, Gurunathan faced a world of
challenges head-on, armed with a tenacious spirit that
would shape his destiny.
Picture this: a young Gurunathan arriving in Wellington
in 1974 with nothing but a measly $200 in his pocket. But
don’t be fooled by the lack of cash; this was the genesis
of a tale that would be etched in the history books.
“I had two part-time jobs and lived in a basement for
$5 a week,” he chuckles, reminiscing
about those early days of hustle and
survival.
University life wasn’t just textbooks
and lectures for Gurunathan. He dived
into the bubbling cauldron of student
politics, co-founding The New Times
Monthly and even joining forces with
the Maori activists of Nga Tamatoa.
“I became their first non-Maori
member,” he says proudly, recalling
his fiery involvement in protests nationwide.
But the real turning point? That would be the
infamous 1981 Anti-Springbok Tour. Gurunathan wasn’t
a bystander; he was a game-changer. “I was part of the
small group that stopped the match,” he says.
Fast forward through journalistic adventures in
Malaysia and a triumphant return to New Zealand in
1995, Gurunathan became Kapiti’s first Asian councillor
in 2010. And if that wasn’t enough, he shattered the
glass ceiling by becoming the first non-Pakeha mayor
in 2016.
“A small contribution to the collective success of the
Kiwi-Indian community,” he humbly acknowledges. In
2022, he retired from local government politics.
Beyond the uproar of politics, Gurunathan’s passions
endure. He’s not just a mayor; he’s a columnist, a voice
for Maori issues and multicultural communities. And
with the recent addition of grandfather to his list of titles,
he’s ready to pen down the rollercoaster ride of his life.
Gurunathan Krishnasamy’s story isn’t
just about politics or achievements; it’s
an exhilarating saga of a man who dared
to challenge the status quo, a tale of
triumph against the odds, and a journey
that continues to inspire and captivate
those who dream of making a difference.
“This award isn’t just
about me; it’s about
inspiring others. These
are testimonials to
impassion, encourage
and inspire others to
blaze their own trails."

Rakesh Nauhria is a virtuoso
Born in 1977, Rakesh journey is a
crescendoing into a dynamic partnership
with his father, Roshan Nauhria, in the year
2000. A Harvard Business School alumnus,
he joined forces with his father, initiating a
into a powerful melody in the construction
Their venture, starting with a modest team
of eight employees, marked the inception
of a transformative period when Rakesh
founded Nauhria Precast in 2001.
“In the melody of challenges, we found our
rhythm, doubling our precast market share
even in the storm of the global financial
crisis,” says Rakesh.
leadership excellence, evident in his role
as Founding Chairperson of Reinforcing
Kiwis, ranging from India,
Philippines, South Africa, Iran, Iraq, Somao,
Tonga, Fiji, and China; they all came to
NZ, one of the most beautiful countries
in the world, to provide a better life from
themselves and their children.
“Through their amazing skills, dedication,
and loyalty to NZ and Nauhria, we have
succeeded and continue to succeed in our
company’s purpose of ‘Helping Build a Great
The entrepreneur says with the population
of Indian-origin people in NZ increasing, it
is wonderful to see such events recognise
the success of the ethnic group, not just in
business but in their community and social
efforts.
“Indians by nature have a very hard working
Preserving culture beyond borders: NZTA
IWK BUREAU
In the heart of Auckland, New
Zealand Telugu Association
(NZTA) stands as a beacon
of cultural preservation,
community service, and
unwavering commitment to the
Telugu-speaking population in
New Zealand. The organisation
has been honoured with
the prestigious Community
Organisation of the Year Award at
Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame 2023.
The NZTA is commemorating
its silver jubilee, marking 25
years of cultural richness and
community engagement. Since
its inception in 1998, the NZTA
has been a cultural anchor for the
nearly 25,000 Telugu people in
New Zealand. The primary goal
was to unite the Telugu diaspora,
providing a platform to celebrate
native traditions, promote the
Telugu language, and foster a
sense of togetherness.
Suneel Kuncha, the President of
NZTA, says, “This award means a
lot to me as I humbly dedicate this
award to all the past presidents
and the executive members right
from the inception of New Zealand
Telugu Association in 1998,”
Kuncha says with gratitude.
“Without their dedication,
hard work, and valuable time,
our association would not
have reached this stage. Thank
you, The Indian Weekender, for
recognising the same.
"This award inspires us to be
more responsible and proactive,
helping our community and the
wider communities.”
According to Kuncha, NZTA
has evolved into a vibrant
community of more than 1,500
active members participating
enthusiastically in various
programmes and events.
“The main idea behind forming
NZTA is to bring Telugu people in
NZ together to rejoice in native
“This award means a
lot to me as I humbly
dedicate this award to
all the past presidents
and the executive
members right from
the inception of
traditions and promote Telugu
language and culture,” states
Kuncha, encapsulating the
association’s founding principles.
“We strive to inspire the younger
generation to learn and practice
Telugu traditions and exchange
programmes for students and
professionals within the Telugu
community and aim to work in the
wider domain.”
The core mission of NZTA
goes beyond cultural festivities.
It is deeply rooted in community
service and humanitarian efforts.
The association organises health
camps, supports local charities,
and actively engages in social
activities to strengthen the bond
between the Telugu community
and the broader New Zealand
society.
NZTA’s educational initiatives
are instrumental in ensuring the
transmission of Telugu traditions
to the younger generation.
Language classes, cultural
programmes, and exchange
initiatives contribute to a
holistic approach, keeping the
cultural flame alive in a foreign
land. Kuncha emphasises the
importance of inspiring the youth
to connect with their roots and
engage in local humanitarian
service, fostering cultural
awareness and a sense of
responsibility towards the broader
community.
Over the years, NZTA has been
a dynamic force in organising
various events, from sporting
competitions and art exhibitions
to religious celebrations and blood
donation camps.
As the NZTA reflects on 25
years of achievements, it stands
as a testament to the power
of cultural organisations in
preserving heritage, fostering
community spirit, and contributing
to the rich cultural mosaic of New
Zealand.

Making finance
fun, inclusive:
Simran Kaur
IWK BUREAU
In the expansive realm of
finance, Simran Kaur emerges
as a luminary, igniting
inspiration and heralding change
as the founder and co-host of
the globally-acclaimed stock
market podcast, ‘Girls That
Invest’. This multi-million dollar
media company has become
synonymous with financial
empowerment.
Simran’s prowess in the finance
domain has not gone unnoticed.
Her inclusion in the prestigious
‘Forbes 30 Under 30’ list attests
to her expertise, while features in
TEDx, Forbes, Vogue, Business
Insider, and Oxford Women in
Business amplify her influence
across diverse platforms. A
watershed moment in her journey
transpired when she took the
stage at UK Houses of Parliament
for International Women’s Day
in March 2023, solidifying her
standing as a global advocate for
financial inclusivity.
Adding yet another accolade to
her illustrious career, Simran has
now been honoured with Young
Achiever Award at Kiwi Indian Hall
of Fame this year.
“It’s such an honour being given
this award and, more importantly,
showing the next generation to
dream big and never be afraid
of what people may think. It’s a
huge inspiration to have received
this award. I feel humbled and
honoured, and I know my family
and I are very grateful.”
of finance and empowerment
began in 2020 when, alongside
her best friend Sonya Gupthan,
she envisioned a space for women
to discuss finance openly. Fast
forward two years, and Girls That
Invest has transcended digital
airwaves, becoming a global
phenomenon with over a million
downloads and a social media
following exceeding 160,000.
The success of Girls That
Invest extends beyond borders.
Simran and Sonya have traversed
geographical boundaries,
sharing financial knowledge
and empowering international
audiences. Her unique teaching
style resonates globally, which is
evident in messages expressing
gratitude for providing a reliable
female perspective in the
traditionally male-dominated
finance world.
Simran’s mission is clear and
compelling: put money into the
hands of women and address the
pervasive wealth gap they face.
Her approach is characterised by a
steadfast commitment to breaking
through financial jargon, making
investing accessible to women
worldwide.
The impact of Simran’s mission
reverberates beyond media
features and accolades. Her bestselling
book, Girls That Invest, has
not just dominated charts globally
but has underscored the hunger for
tailored investing education. The
book’s success finds resonance in
Simran’s substantial social media
following of 350,000 and the over
6,000 students in 60 countries
benefiting from her teachings.
Simran Kaur’s journey is a
narrative of resilience, dedication,
and an unwavering pursuit of a
more equitable financial future for
women. Her podcast, book, and
educational initiatives transcend
their roles as mere sources of
information—they have become
catalysts for change, empowering
women to dream big and liberate
themselves from financial
constraints.
In the legacy of Simran Kaur,
finance is not just a set of numbers;
it is a tool for empowerment, a
means for women to carve their
paths to financial independence.
Simran’s impact on the financial
landscape becomes a beacon as
she continues to break barriers
and inspire, guiding women
worldwide toward a future where
dreams are not limited by gender
but flourish through knowledge
and empowerment.
Evolution of Fivestar: From print to design to web
SUPPLIED CONTENT
In an era of rapid technological
advancements and dynamic
market shifts, businesses
must evolve to remain relevant
and competitive. One company
that has embodied this spirit of
transformation and innovation is
Fivestar, a formerly print-centric
firm that has now rebranded to
Fivestar. Print. Design. Web.
The COVID-19 pandemic was
a stark reminder that relying
on traditional safety nets isn’t
necessarily the best strategy. It
taught us that diversification and
openness to new opportunities
could lead to survival and a
new level of success. This is
the philosophy that has guided
Fivestar’s transformation.
Regarding print services,
Fivestar has beefed up its
staff and expanded its service
offerings. New additions in print
machinery, such as the Fuji Xerox
Iridesse, Xerox 1000i for small
format, HP Latex R1000, HP R800
for large format, and the Epson
SurePress label machine, have
significantly enhanced the firm’s
capacity to deliver high-quality
outputs and fast turn-around.
Fivestar has also strategically
targeted the label and packaging
market, upgrading its gear to
align with this new business
direction. To accommodate these
expansions, the company has
moved to larger premises, with
a bigger operations capacity at
the new facility located at Unit
5/273 Neilson Street, Onehunga,
Auckland.
However, the firm’s evolution
has continued at print services.
Recognising the burgeoning
opportunities in the digital
space, Fivestar has rapidly
grown its digital marketing and
product offerings capabilities.
The company now offers
comprehensive online brand
solutions, including website
design, social media marketing,
email marketing, and SEO
services.
Since moving to Onehunga
in 2022, Fivestar has prepared
to make 2024 a landmark year.
The company is set to launch
“We Love Branding”, a complete
online brand marketing platform
that promises to revolutionise
how businesses present
themselves in the market.
Fivestar’s transformation is a
testament to its commitment to
customer service and innovation.
The company has gone beyond
being just a print company.
With a complete suite of brand
marketing solutions under
one roof, it is now a one-stop
platform for businesses looking
to make their mark offline and
online. Fivestar. Print. Design.
Web. is a shining example of
how businesses can, and should,
evolve with the times.
As we look towards a future
that is increasingly digital,
Fivestar. Print. Design. Web.
is poised to be at the forefront
of this evolution, translating
brands into vibrant, interactive
experiences that resonate with
today’s consumers.
Fivestar is committed to
environmental responsibility
within the print industry,
recognising the challenges
of maintaining a sustainable
ecosystem. The company actively
contributes to the ecosystem by
prioritising using eco-friendly
materials and inks in its printing
processes. By embracing
sustainable practices, Fivestar
reduces its environmental
footprint and promotes the
conservation of natural
resources. This commitment
reflects the company’s dedication
to eco-conscious operations
and positions Fivestar as a
responsible and forward-thinking
print provider. Through its efforts,
Fivestar demonstrates that
environmental stewardship and
high-quality print solutions can
go hand in hand.
The company’s renewed focus
on design is a testament to its
understanding of its crucial
role in shaping the consumer’s
perception of a brand. By offering
comprehensive design services,
Fivestar ensures that each
brand’s unique story is told in
the most impactful and visually
captivating way. This, combined
with their print capabilities,
allows them to create physical
marketing materials that
communicate a brand’s message
and engage the senses, creating
a more memorable brand
experience.
Fivestar has proven its prowess
in web services by offering
a suite of digital marketing
solutions that help brands
establish a solid online presence.
The company’s foray into website
design, social media marketing,
email marketing, and SEO
services reflects its commitment
to helping brands navigate the
digital landscape.

IN FOCUS : Picture of the week
Celebrating the
Kiwi-Indian spirit
of achievement
In the heart of Auckland’s vibrant event calendar, The Indian Weekender Kiwi
Indian Hall of Fame stands tall as a beacon of recognition and celebration.
Established in 2013, this annual event has become a cornerstone in honouring
the achievements and contributions of Indian New Zealanders to their adopted
homeland.
As we gear up for yet another edition this evening, it’s not just about acknowledging
success but understanding the unique journey of migrants, who, in the face of
adversity, have not only prospered personally but have enriched the cultural and
economic tapestry of New Zealand.
Migration is a journey laden with challenges, where individuals leave behind the
familiar and embrace the unknown. The Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame recognises and
applauds the resilience and determination of those who have chosen NZ as their
new home.
The very essence of this event lies in the understanding that migrants often have
to work harder, navigating the nuances of a new place, unfamiliar faces, and an
entirely different way of life.
Each year, the Prime Minister of New Zealand bestows this coveted supreme
award, inducting a new Kiwi Indian into the Hall of Fame.
This tradition not only acknowledges the outstanding accomplishments of
individuals but also serves as a powerful testament to the inclusive nature of NZ
society. It sends a resounding message that success knows no cultural or ethnic
bounds in this nation.
The significance of celebrating the achievements of migrants cannot be
overstated. Beyond the glitz and glamour of the Hall of Fame event lies a deeper
purpose—to inspire.
The stories of these achievers resonate with countless others who may be on the
cusp of their own journey, struggling to find their place in a new land. By showcasing
the triumphs of Kiwi Indians, we illuminate a path for others, encouraging them to
overcome obstacles and contribute meaningfully to their adopted country.
This celebration of success goes beyond individual recognition; it fosters a sense
of belonging and pride within the entire migrant community.
It reinforces the idea that their efforts are not in vain and that their contributions
are not only valued but crucial to the growth and diversity of NZ. In essence, the Hall
of Fame becomes a symbol of unity, bridging the gap between diverse communities
and creating a shared narrative of achievement.
The inclusion of new awards this year further enhances the significance of the
Indian Weekender Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame.
The Kiwi Indian Cultural Person of the Year award recognises individuals who
have played a pivotal role in keeping their native culture alive in NZ. In a world that
is becoming increasingly interconnected, preserving one’s cultural identity is both
challenging and essential.
This award sheds light on the unsung heroes who tirelessly work to maintain the
cultural tapestry, weaving it seamlessly into the Kiwi way of life.
Simultaneously, the introduction of the Kiwi Indian Businessperson of the Year
award highlights the economic contributions of the community. Migrants bring
with them a wealth of skills, talents, and entrepreneurial spirit.
This award not only applauds their achievements in the business world but also
serves as a reminder of the symbiotic relationship between migration and economic
prosperity.
As we witness the Prime Minister of NZ once again gracing the stage to honour
a new inductee into the Hall of Fame, let us reflect on the broader implications of
this celebration.
It is a reaffirmation of NZ’s commitment to diversity, a recognition of the struggles
faced by migrants, and an inspiration for future generations to dream big, work
hard, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and adopted nation.
The Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame has evolved into more than just an annual event; it
is a testament to the spirit of achievement and the power of diversity. By shining
a spotlight on the successes of Kiwi Indians, we not only celebrate individual
accomplishments but also contribute to the collective narrative of a thriving,
inclusive, and harmonious NZ.
As the Hall of Fame continues to grow in stature, so does the legacy of those who
have worked tirelessly to make this nation their home, enriching it in ways beyond
measure.
the times
Barfoot & Thompson celebrates 100
years at the forefront of real estate
SUPPLIED CONTENT
The year 2023 stands out as
a significant year for Barfoot
& Thompson, with
the company celebrating its
centenary, and reaching the
remarkable milestone of
100 years of helping Kiwis
buy and sell property.
Achieving this level of
longevity in the real estate
sector is no small feat.
From humble beginnings,
the company has not only
stood the test of time,
but emerged as a market
leader, currently selling one
in every three houses in
the Auckland region* and
extending its reach from
Auckland and Northland
into the Bay of Plenty.
Original founder, Val
Barfoot, would be proud of
how far the business has
come – a long, long way
from the tiny, run-down
Newmarket land agency
he bought in 1923, for just
£75!
Back then, Val called
his new venture “V.
Barfoot Land Agent”, but
changed the name a year later
to “Barfoot Bros”, when his older
brother, Kelland, came aboard.
Then in 1934, they were joined by
Maurice Thompson, and in 1940
the business
became “Barfoot
& Thompson” as
it’s known today.
For 100 years,
through shifting market cycles,
economic downturns, war
times, changes in government
regulations and more, this iconic
Kiwi brand has continued to grow
and flourish. It has also been
steadfastly familyowned
and managed
all this time, with the
two current Directors
- Peter Thompson
and Stephen Barfoot
- being the grandsons
of the original owners.
While the centennial
celebrations have
given pause for
thought, and a chance
for the entire 2,800+
member -strong
Barfoot & Thompson
team to celebrate
and acknowledge the
journey to date, both
Directors emphasise
that the company’s
focus is set squarely
on the future.
Embracing
new
technology, remaining at the
forefront of industry practice,
enhancing its reputation for
impeccable service, and, crucially,
sticking to the foundational
principles that prioritise ‘people,
family, diversity and community’,
remain key drivers for the business
moving forward.
As does ‘giving back and
supporting local’ - which is
something that Barfoot &
Thompson has become known
for. Sponsoring events like our
own Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame,
giving generously to charities like
Starship, backing sports teams
like The Blues - and making the
communities where we live, work
and play more exciting, positive
places to be.
This is an inclusive approach
that has served our city and the
company well for 100 years - and
it will remain at the base of daily
business.
Khushi wears
mother
Sridevi's
iconic gown
at 'The
Archies'
screening
Khushi Kapoor is turning heads not just
with her acting but also with a fashion
statement that echoes her mother's iconic
style. On Tuesday, she graced the screening of her
debut film 'The Archies' in a golden gown that was
worn by her mother and late actor Sridevi back in
2013.
Remembering her mother on this special day,
Khushi chose to pay tribute to Sridevi in the iconic
ensemble.
Sridevi wore this gown with intricate crystals as
a showstopper in 2013 at the IFA red carpet. Now, it
takes centre stage once again as Khushi steps into the
world of Bollywood.
A source close to Khushi Kapoor revealed, "Khushi is
extremely happy to pay a tribute to her mother as she
wears such an iconic gown which was once worn by her
mother. She is also wearing Sridevi's jewellery for the
red carpet. This is a very special day and for Khushi it's
particularly an emotional debut."
Helmed by Zoya Akhtar, the film marks the acting debut
of Amitabh Bachchan's grandson Agastya Nanda and
Shah Rukh Khan's daughter Suhana Khan.
'The Archies', a coming-of-age musical,
follows the lives of Archie, Betty, Veronica,
Ayushmann Khurrana is one of the
most versatile actors in Bollywood.
It was his childhood dream to be a
big screen hero and with his hard work, he
has found that place in his life.
"I remember being supremely excited
about going to the cinemas every single
time. I loved the world films transported
me into. I idolised the heroes. We used to
always watch movies on TV too and then
rented movies as time progressed. Cinema
was always an important part of our daily
lives," he said.
Ayushmann also shared how stalwarts
like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh
Khan fascinated him to take up acting as
a career.
" I grew up being fascinated by the works
of towering heroes like Amitabh Bachchan,
Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil
Kapoor, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, to name
a few! I also wanted to be a big screen hero.
So, I'm living my dream now and I consider
myself extremely fortunate to have created
a niche for myself.
The industry has been extremely
welcoming and the audience has given me
a lot of love. I respect that from the bottom
of my heart," he added.
Ayushmann is also grateful to his
parents who pushed him to pursue his
dream of becoming a Hindi film hero.
"The love for the movies is what made
me pursue theatre in college. It pulled me
to Mumbai where I tried to make a name,
Earlier, he was photographed
support of the film, particularly his fearsome
adversary persona.
"Guys thank you so much. God has been
Vanga, 'Animal' also stars Ranbir
Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika
Mandana, Shakti Kapoor and
at the box office with Meghna
co-starring Twinkle Khanna. He has starred
in films like 'Soldier', 'Badal', 'Gupt', 'Race
3', 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' among others.
However, his career petered out somewhere
in the late 2000s. After a long gap, he made a
comeback in 2018's 'Race 3', following up with
'Class of '83' and a hit series 'Aashram'.
