• Felt-covered – for innerlining use between outer

fabric and lining for blazers, jackets, coats, etc.

• Charmeuse-covered – easily sewn-in on the

inside of the outer fabric without interlining for

The product „shoulder pads“, the original strong product of Muehlmeier

Bodyshaping, lies kind of in the genes of Muehlmeier. So, give me a minute to

comment on the later developments of this new hype of the fashion world.

Some consider blazers with broad shoulders to be a relic of the

eighties. What do you think?

They stay a symbol of the liberation of fashion and of women. Shoulder

pads were first seen on the catwalk in 1931. Namely by Elsa Schiaparelli.

At that time, she was looking for a new way to make her waist appear

smaller. Until then, women had to force themselves into corsets in order to

conform to this ideal of beauty. The use of shoulder pads and the resulting

broad shoulders were inherent in a feminist myth of strength, even more

during war and after war fashion. Also to be seen as “Marlene Look”.

The highlight on shoulders experienced the largest peak

again in the 80s. Grace Jones, a strong woman, naked under

her angular blazer and edgy haircut. The new yuppie

generation of Dallas & Co. followed and wanted to create a

show of themselves… and think big overall. Every woman

or man was wearing shoulder pads. Even in two or three

layers. This hype lasted until the beginning of the 90s.

For two or three years now the new volume look is about

to take over. It presents this new opulent shoulder silhouette,

after decades of natural slenderness. Shoulder pads are needed

again to create this generous new self-conscious silhouette,

led by legendary styles of Balenciaga, Balmain, Armani…

Why are shoulder pads making a comeback now?

Times are getting harder. As a response, expressive shoulders are quite

capable of making us more powerful, confident and assertive. Look at

Batman, Superman or Spiderman: They all have broad shoulders.

Shoulder pads declare us

heroes, so to speak. And that

again corresponds to the spirit

of the time: Ultimately, we

want to become heroes of our

own lives. Don't play second

fiddle, but rather the main role.

Like a woman not supporting

a man but herself! How could

this be symbolically easier

than with shoulder pads?

Pagoda ShoulderPad, rounded

For outdoor jackets or coats as interlining pad:

The core of this Pagoda raglan shape is foam, already cut in saddle

shape. Top and bottom of the pad are covered with soft interlining.

The special sewing technology increases the Pagoda shape.

Set-in Halfmoon ShoulderPad

For jackets and blazers as interlining pad:

MUEHLMEIER delivers pads with a core from homogeneous cotton

wadding stitched with interlining layers on the top and bottom of

the pad. Depending on the compression of the wadding core, the

pad has a more soft or more strong consistency.

Raglan ShoulderPad, the overcut shoulder, more or less steep

For ladies dresses and blouses:

Basis for this pad is foam, shape-cut into thin raglan shape layers.

This foam core is covered with charmeuse in colours according to

customers’ demands. The steep raglan works also for set-in shoulders

and guarantees the anatomical perfect slim fit of the pad.

Biological Cycle (biobased / biodegradable)

Depending on the desired stability of the shoulder pad, we offer various material options, including laminated

and biobased choices. Our toolbox of materials is designed to support circular fashion design concepts that

align to the diverse customer requirements. You can choose from different renewable materials like Lyocell,

Cotton, Canvas, Wool (mulesing-free), or recyclable materials like virgin PES.

We have a clear goal in mind: to broaden our collection of more responsible materials further. In doing so, we reduce

detrimental effects on the environment. By using recycled polyester and recyclable 100% PES, we keep the fibres in

the material cycle for longer and can offer monomaterial products. Overall, we are working to reduce the use of synthetic

fossil-based materials in general and recommend biobased solutions for many existing shoulder shapes.

Blouses and dresses

The light material qualities of blouses and dresses require soft, cuddly and airy shoulder

pads that emphasize the natural shoulder shape. They underline and accentuate the silhouette.

The pads are sewn in openly or fastened with velcro. Therefore, shoulder pads

which are covered with charmeuse material are mostly used here.

Knitwear and Sportswear

Basically, the same charmeuse-lined padding as mentioned for blouses and dresses

is suitable for knitwear and sportswear. Light foam and fibre padding are the basic

core materials for blousons, anoraks and similar leisurewear. All charmeuse-covered

shoulder pads can be supplied with velcro. This way, they are removable at will for the

user. Wearing comfort and washability are important arguments for use in this area.

Shoulder pads and inserts are the classic tools to shape the male contour in suits

and jackets. Felt and cotton padding as the tried and tested shapers have found a modern

complement with materials such as foam and Polyester fibre cushions. These materials

can be used to create lower-priced strict classics just as casual styles. The thickness goes

up with more modern visibility also in men’s wear.

Perfect Shoulder Transition

Sleeves are always a challenge when using set-in halfmoon

shoulder pads in conventional jackets and coats. To avoid

the “breaked-in” look at the outside of the sleeve, below the

padding, sleeve head rolls are the solution for such garments.

It gives support to the sleeve at the shoulder edge and can

considerably enhance the volume look and fit of the sleeve

providing lasting shape retention.
