God was letting them know that their faith

would take away the sins of the world and we
must have faith that he is keeping His promise

Reflections from Mayberry

TREASURES
Many years ago at the downtown Rose’s
store in Mt. Airy, our family went Christmas
shopping. As usual, we split up and I went
with Daddy and Vickie went with Mama. Of
course, before long I spotted something on
a shelf that caught my eye. It was a tiny
plastic Nativity. It may have cost 25 cents,
but at that time a quarter was a lot of
money. Daddy saw how much I loved it and
he bought it for me. It has always been a
treasure to me. Somehow through the
years I have always kept it in a safe spot. As
the years pasted and seasons of life
passed, it became even more precious to
me. In fact, all the years I taught school (30
years total) that small plastic Nativity sat
at the base of my classroom tree. Today it
sits in my China cabinet in a special place
where I can see it year round. To me it
serves as a reminder of that special day
Daddy bought it for me and of the precious
gift that God sent to us on Christmas Day.
For 30 years I was allowed to share my
story of that tiny plastic Nativity with my
students. I emphasized to them that it’s
not the bicycles, Barbies, toy trucks, action
figures, skates or other things that matter
at Christmas.

It’s all about the gift that God gave
us on Christmas. Each year as I
placed my treasure under my
classroom tree, a tear would trickle
down my face and I would thank
God for my family and pray that my
students would have someone in
their family that would share a
“Treasure” with them. I am SO
thankful that God sent a tiny baby
to save us from our sins and save
the world. Salvation is such a
precious gift! Accept it today and
find your TREASURE!

I wonder what Christmas means to a
mother who has lost her husband, who
now must take care of 3 or 4 children,
working every day, never quite getting
everything done, never making ends
meet? What does Christmas mean to
her?
I wonder what Christmas means to the
little man in Zimbabwe, 80 years old,
living in a hut, who knows nothing of
shopping malls or Christmas trees? What
does Christmas mean to him?
I wonder what it means to little Korean
children with dirty smudges on their
cheeks and sparkling eyes that look up in
wonder as you walk past? What does
Christmas mean to them?
I wonder what is means to missionaries
who are half a world away from families

and friends, who are sacrificing so
much to take the precious gospel
message to others who have never
heard? What does it mean to them?
I’m sure it means different things to
different people.
To merchants...it is the busiest time of
the year. Stores stay open longer and
hire extra people to accommodate all
the shoppers. It means more profit,
hopefully enough profit to see them
through lean times ahead.
For some employees it means a
Christmas bonus, a little more money
in their pockets to do things that they
want to do.
For many teenagers and adults, it is a

time of fun and parties. For children, it is a
time of impatience with time seeming to
pass so slowly as they wait for Christmas
morning.
But sometimes I get the feeling that we are
like the folks who decided to throw a party
to honor a very special friend. They sent
out invitations, decorated the place, and
had the food catered. All the people came
together at the designated time, but to
their surprise, the guest of honor was not
there.
but somehow we forget whose
birthday it really is?
There’s one family that wanted to
keep this reminder before them...so
what they did was put an extra place
at their Christmas table just for Jesus
and calling Christmas, “His birthday
party.”
OH NO...they made the embarrassing
discover...that no one had ever invited the
guest of honor!
When one of their daughters was
asked if she got everything she
wanted for Christmas, she answered
by saying, “No, but then it’s not my
birthday.”
It isn’t our birthday, is it? It’s the Lord’s
birthday and it’s a time to remember
His birth and what it is supposed to
mean to us.
I wonder if that happens at Christmas time?
Do we go through all the “Christmas”
motions? Decorating...buying presents,
hiding the presents, and wrapping those
presents. Don’t forget those stocking
suffers! Don’t forget the corn-syrup for the
pies or the dressing and all that goes with
preparing the elaborate Christmas meal...
