SAMPLE - Death of legal hope and the life of evangelical obedience.
The Apostle Paul frequently teaches upon the role of the Moral Law in the life and practice of the Christian. One such place is his inspired epistle to the Galatian church. Against a backdrop where “…some professors of evangelical doctrine are verging towards Arminian legality, and others towards Antinomian licentiousness…” Booth turns his reader’s attention to Gal.2:19 and provides a clear and comprehensible teaching on the Christian’s relationship to God’s Moral Law.

Publisher’s Note<br />
It is <strong>hope</strong>d that our books will reintroduce many<br />
<strong>of</strong> today’s Calvinistic Baptists to <strong>the</strong> literary<br />
heritage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir notable <strong>and</strong> largely forgotten<br />
forefa<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> Particular Baptists.<br />
Their written works were both spiritually rooted<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ologically driven. They <strong>of</strong>fer not only<br />
penetrating insights into God’s Word, but also a<br />
deep spirit <strong>of</strong> devotion to Christ.<br />
Our team works hard to provide <strong>the</strong> reader with<br />
unabridged, word-for-word renditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
valuable works in new <strong>and</strong> durable formats. This<br />
means keeping <strong>the</strong> original spellings, punctuations,<br />
<strong>and</strong> sentence structures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> originals even as we<br />
employ modern fonts <strong>and</strong> book binding<br />
techniques.<br />
For clarity, we also wish to inform our readers<br />
that our publishing <strong>of</strong> an author’s works does not<br />
necessarily entail a complete endorsement <strong>of</strong> every<br />
doctrinal point held by that author. Our goal is to<br />
give our readers access to Particular Baptist sources<br />
which will edify <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>and</strong> continue <strong>the</strong> work<br />
<strong>of</strong> Baptist historiography, not to stifle our heritage<br />
in <strong>the</strong> <strong>hope</strong> <strong>of</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>ning present convictions.<br />
iii
The <strong>Death</strong> <strong>of</strong> Legal Hope<br />
Finally, among <strong>the</strong> many pressing needs <strong>of</strong><br />
Calvinistic Baptist churches today is <strong>the</strong> need to<br />
identify, recover, <strong>and</strong> preserve <strong>the</strong>ir rich literary<br />
heritage.<br />
If you agree, <strong>the</strong>re is a way for you to help. Our<br />
publishing ministry depends heavily upon financial<br />
partners eager to subsidize <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> republishing<br />

LIFE OF EVANGELICAL<br />
OBEDIENCE<br />
AN ESSAY<br />
ON<br />
GALATIANS 2:19.<br />
WE ARE DELIVERED FROM THE LAW, THAT BEING<br />
DEAD WHEREIN WE WERE HELD: THAT WE<br />
SHOULD SERVE IN NEWNESS OF SPIRIT, AND<br />
NOT IN THE OLDNESS OF THE LETTER. PAUL
DEDICATION.<br />
TO<br />
THE CHURCH OF CHRIST<br />
ASSEMBLING IN<br />
LITTLE PRESCOT STREET,<br />
Goodman’s Fields, London.<br />
BELOVED IN THE LORD,<br />
You have already heard, from <strong>the</strong> pulpit, <strong>the</strong><br />
substance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following Essay; <strong>and</strong> at your<br />
request it is now made public. The subject, it<br />
must be admitted, is highly interesting; but, as<br />
to <strong>the</strong> execution <strong>of</strong> it, you, <strong>and</strong> my readers in<br />
general, must judge. This, however, I may<br />
venture to affirm, that experimentally to know<br />
<strong>the</strong> truths it contains, is to be truly wise; <strong>and</strong> to<br />
live under <strong>the</strong>ir sacred influence, enjoying <strong>the</strong><br />
consolations arising from <strong>the</strong>m, is to be<br />
substantially happy.<br />
1
The <strong>Death</strong> <strong>of</strong> Legal Hope<br />
I trust you will ever esteem it your<br />
indispensable duty, <strong>and</strong> inestimable blessing, to<br />
hold fast <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> sound words, <strong>and</strong> to<br />
maintain <strong>the</strong> truth as it is in Jesus. Then, while<br />
some pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong> <strong>evangelical</strong> doctrine are<br />
verging towards Arminian <strong>legal</strong>ity, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />
towards Antinomian licentiousness, it will be<br />
your happiness to be preserved from those<br />
wide <strong>and</strong> fatal extremes;—so preserved, that<br />
while you steadily assert <strong>the</strong> honours <strong>of</strong> grace,<br />
in <strong>the</strong> salvation <strong>of</strong> sinners, you may not neglect<br />
<strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> holiness, that while you delight<br />
in <strong>the</strong> gospel, as <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong> salvation, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
food <strong>of</strong> your souls, you may revere <strong>the</strong> law, as<br />
a transcript <strong>of</strong> your Maker’s will, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> rule<br />
<strong>of</strong> your <strong>obedience</strong> to him.<br />
You will do well to remember, that <strong>the</strong> true<br />
honour <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> real excellence <strong>of</strong> a christian<br />
church consist, not in <strong>the</strong> number or affluence<br />
<strong>of</strong> its members,—not in any thing which may<br />
dazzle <strong>the</strong> eye or comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> respect <strong>of</strong><br />
superficial observers, but in its cordial<br />
adherence to <strong>the</strong> truths <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gospel <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
ordinances <strong>of</strong> Christ, in <strong>the</strong>ir primitive purity;<br />
in <strong>the</strong> exercise <strong>of</strong> mutual fervent love among<br />
2
its members; <strong>and</strong> in a holy, heavenly, useful<br />
conversation. These constitute <strong>the</strong> principal<br />
glory <strong>of</strong> a church. In proportion as <strong>the</strong>se<br />
abound, <strong>the</strong> Redeemer is honoured <strong>and</strong><br />
believers are edified. In proportion as <strong>the</strong>se<br />
abate, <strong>the</strong> glory departs, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong><br />
religion decline.<br />
That you may have a growing acquaintance<br />
with divine truth in all its branches, <strong>and</strong> an<br />
increasing affection one to ano<strong>the</strong>r for <strong>the</strong><br />
truth’s sake; that <strong>the</strong> <strong>life</strong>, <strong>and</strong> fervour, <strong>and</strong><br />
amiable simplicity <strong>of</strong> primitive Christianity,<br />
may be conspicuous in your worship <strong>and</strong><br />
conduct; that faith may abound in your hearts,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fruits <strong>of</strong> righteousness adorn your<br />
conversation; is <strong>the</strong> sincere desire <strong>and</strong> earnest<br />
prayer <strong>of</strong><br />

THE<br />
DEATH OF LEGAL<br />
HOPE,<br />
&c. &c.<br />
INTRODUCTION<br />
GALATIANS 2:19.<br />
I through <strong>the</strong> Law am dead to <strong>the</strong> Law, that I might<br />
live unto God.<br />
The words which contain <strong>the</strong> important<br />
subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following Essay, being part <strong>of</strong><br />
that epistle which was written by Paul to <strong>the</strong><br />
Galatian churches, it may not be improper, by<br />
way <strong>of</strong> introduction to observe, That in his<br />
letter to those churches, we have an antient<br />
piece <strong>of</strong> sacred controversy; <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> truth<br />
vindicated in it is interesting to <strong>the</strong> last degree.<br />
For <strong>the</strong> great question here debated is, in <strong>the</strong>
The <strong>Death</strong> <strong>of</strong> Legal Hope<br />
words <strong>of</strong> Job, How shall man be just with<br />
God? 1 In <strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> which<br />
controversy, <strong>the</strong> great apostle proceeds, under<br />
<strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> inspiration, with all <strong>the</strong> fire <strong>of</strong><br />
godly zeal; 2 with all <strong>the</strong> affection <strong>of</strong> a tender<br />
parent; 3 with all <strong>the</strong> meekness <strong>of</strong> heavenly<br />
wisdom; 4 <strong>and</strong> (I will not say, with all <strong>the</strong><br />
accuracy <strong>of</strong> logical disputation, but, which is<br />
infinitely superior) with all <strong>the</strong> certainty <strong>of</strong><br />
infallibility.<br />
Paul was an indefatigable labourer in <strong>the</strong><br />
vineyard <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ, <strong>and</strong> a successful<br />
preacher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> everlasting gospel. He was<br />
abundantly useful in <strong>the</strong> execution <strong>of</strong> his<br />
apostolic <strong>of</strong>fice, in turning multitudes <strong>of</strong><br />
sinners from darkness to light, <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong><br />
power <strong>of</strong> Satan to God. Yet, after all his<br />
unwearied labours, <strong>and</strong> all his unparalleled<br />
success, he did not assume <strong>the</strong> least share <strong>of</strong><br />

honour. His language is, Not I, but <strong>the</strong> grace <strong>of</strong><br />
God which was with me.<br />
Nor was he backward to acknowledge, after<br />
all <strong>the</strong> sufferings which he had sustained, <strong>and</strong><br />
all <strong>the</strong> works that he had performed, for <strong>the</strong><br />
sake <strong>of</strong> his divine Master; that, as a saint, he was<br />
less than <strong>the</strong> least; but as a sinner, <strong>the</strong> first <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> chief. 5 —Perfectly sensible that he was<br />
utterly unworthy in <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> his Maker, <strong>and</strong><br />
that his <strong>hope</strong> had no support but sovereign<br />
grace, as revealed in Jesus; being well<br />
acquainted with <strong>the</strong> infinite purity <strong>of</strong> a<br />
righteous God, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sublime dem<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> his<br />
holy law; he could accede to no terms <strong>of</strong><br />
acceptance, nor acquiesce in any doctrine<br />
which did not provide, as well for <strong>the</strong> honour<br />
<strong>of</strong> divine justice, as for <strong>the</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> guilty<br />
soul; which did not maintain <strong>the</strong> rights <strong>of</strong> a<br />
holy law, <strong>and</strong> display <strong>the</strong> riches <strong>of</strong> unbounded<br />
grace. Such was <strong>the</strong> faith he possessed, <strong>and</strong><br />
such was <strong>the</strong> doctrine he preached.<br />
5 Eph. 3:8; 1 Tim. 1:15.<br />
7
The <strong>Death</strong> <strong>of</strong> Legal Hope<br />
These truths were dispensed by him among<br />
<strong>the</strong> Galatians, <strong>and</strong> with a considerable degree<br />
<strong>of</strong> success. Sinners were converted, <strong>and</strong><br />
churches formed in Galatia, by <strong>the</strong><br />
instrumentality <strong>of</strong> this excellent man.—For a<br />
time, <strong>the</strong>y lived in mutual peace, <strong>and</strong> regarded<br />
<strong>the</strong> doctrine which Paul had taught, as <strong>of</strong><br />
heavenly origin. They rejoiced in <strong>hope</strong>; <strong>the</strong>y ran<br />
well, 6 <strong>and</strong> seemed to bid fair for obtaining <strong>the</strong><br />
prize. Such were <strong>the</strong>ir happy circumstances for<br />
some time after <strong>the</strong>y received <strong>the</strong> gospel!<br />
But, alas, how soon <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> things was<br />
altered! 7 How soon, as to many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, were<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir views <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> grace <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
justification before him, darkened! For Satan,<br />
that arch enemy <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> man, quickly<br />
began to sow <strong>the</strong> seeds <strong>of</strong> destructive error,<br />
<strong>and</strong> to raise up instruments to propagate a<br />
perverted gospel. He transformed himself into<br />
an angel <strong>of</strong> light, <strong>and</strong> pleaded <strong>the</strong> necessity <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>obedience</strong> to <strong>the</strong> law, in order to acceptance<br />
with God. Thus were <strong>the</strong>y deceived, under a<br />
6 Gal. 5:7.<br />
7 Gal. 1:6.<br />
8
Chapter 7<br />
specious pretence <strong>of</strong> greater sanctity, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> a<br />
more than ordinary zeal for <strong>the</strong> divine<br />
comm<strong>and</strong>s.<br />
The righteousness <strong>of</strong> Christ, which Paul had<br />
described as <strong>the</strong> one thing needful for <strong>the</strong><br />
justification <strong>of</strong> sinners, <strong>and</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y had<br />
regarded as <strong>the</strong> only ground <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>hope</strong>; <strong>the</strong>y<br />
became afraid to trust, supposing it<br />
insufficient. They were taught by <strong>the</strong> false<br />
apostles, <strong>and</strong> were persuaded in <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />
deceived hearts, that <strong>the</strong>y were under <strong>the</strong><br />
necessity <strong>of</strong> seeking a supplementary aid from<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own duties.<br />
This doctrine, so flattering to <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />
vanity, so favourable to human worthiness, <strong>and</strong><br />
not including a pr<strong>of</strong>essed rejection <strong>of</strong> Christ<br />
<strong>and</strong> his work, <strong>the</strong>y received with all readiness.<br />
For it is much more agreeable to <strong>the</strong> pride <strong>of</strong><br />
nature, <strong>and</strong> a far more popular way <strong>of</strong> seeking<br />
acceptance with God; to use our own skill, <strong>and</strong><br />
exert our own endeavours, as co-efficients with<br />
divine grace <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> great Redeemer, than to<br />
rely entirely on <strong>the</strong> righteousness <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r,<br />
<strong>and</strong> be absolutely beholden to a foreign,<br />
9
The <strong>Death</strong> <strong>of</strong> Legal Hope<br />
undeserved assistance.—They entered,<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore, on a vain pursuit <strong>of</strong> happiness, in<br />
this plausible <strong>and</strong> self-pleasing, but delusive<br />
method. They clave to <strong>the</strong> law. They relied on<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own duties, as co-partners with Jesus, in<br />
performing <strong>the</strong> greatest <strong>of</strong> all works, in<br />
obtaining <strong>the</strong> noblest <strong>of</strong> all blessings, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
justification before <strong>the</strong> Almighty.<br />
The awful consequences <strong>of</strong> which were, <strong>the</strong>y<br />
embraced ano<strong>the</strong>r gospel; made void <strong>the</strong><br />
necessity <strong>of</strong> our Lord’s death; <strong>and</strong> virtually<br />
renounced all interest in him. 8 By such a<br />
procedure, <strong>the</strong>y became debtors to do <strong>the</strong><br />
whole law, <strong>and</strong> were obnoxious to its dreadful<br />
curse. 9 Besides, having discarded <strong>the</strong> glorious<br />
truth which Paul preached, <strong>the</strong>y traduced his<br />
character, <strong>the</strong>y renounced his fellowship, <strong>and</strong><br />
treated him as <strong>the</strong>ir enemy. 10<br />
Such were <strong>the</strong> malignant effects <strong>of</strong> receiving<br />
a corrupted gospel! These effects <strong>the</strong> good<br />
apostle beheld with a mixture <strong>of</strong> indignation<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> sorrow. Against <strong>the</strong>ir destructive <strong>and</strong><br />
fatal mistakes, he <strong>the</strong>refore takes up his pen,<br />
<strong>and</strong> makes a resolute st<strong>and</strong>. The false apostles<br />
he considers as <strong>the</strong>ir greatest enemies; <strong>and</strong> as<br />
being, in a peculiar manner, accursed <strong>of</strong><br />
God. 11 —He made it appear, by such a<br />
determined opposition to <strong>the</strong>ir plausible <strong>and</strong><br />
prevailing tenets, that when <strong>the</strong> capital truths<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gospel were corrupted, <strong>the</strong> peace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Christian injured, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> souls <strong>of</strong> men<br />
endangered; he had no fear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hideous<br />
charge <strong>and</strong> popular clamour, <strong>of</strong> ‘bigotry to his<br />
own way;’ or, ‘<strong>of</strong> rashness, <strong>and</strong> a want <strong>of</strong><br />
charity for o<strong>the</strong>rs.’<br />
In this respect, as in his ministerial conduct<br />
in general, he is worthy <strong>of</strong> imitation by all <strong>the</strong><br />
succeeding servants <strong>of</strong> Christ. For, though it be<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir indispensable duty to speak <strong>the</strong> truth in<br />
love, <strong>and</strong> to follow peace with all men; yet,<br />
when <strong>the</strong> great doctrines <strong>of</strong> divine revelation<br />
are perverted or denied, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y are called in<br />
Providence, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y are required by <strong>the</strong><br />
comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> love which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

The <strong>Death</strong> <strong>of</strong> Legal Hope<br />

earnestly for <strong>the</strong> faith once delivered to <strong>the</strong><br />
saints. Nor ought <strong>the</strong>y to regard <strong>the</strong> persons <strong>of</strong><br />
men, or fear <strong>the</strong> consequences which may<br />
attend a zealous <strong>and</strong> prudent defence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
truth.<br />
