Did you know that Route 66 began in 1926 when 

the Bureau of Public Roads launched the nation’s 

first Federal highway system? It’s interesting to note 

that the path of Route 66 was a cobbling together of 

existing local, State, and national road networks, much 

like other highways in the system. 

Another interesting fact is that the first RVs in America 

were independently built as single units. According to 

Smithsonian, the first RV was hand built onto a vehicle 

in 1904. It had incandescent lights, an icebox, and 

even a radio. It could sleep up to four adults in bunks. 

We’ve always been fascinated by the history of RVs in 

the United States, especially how they’re connected 

to Route 66. For decades, families would pack up their 

RVs and hit the open road, making Route 66 one of the 

most traveled highways in the country. It’s not hard to 

see why: owning an RV offers a sense of freedom and 

adventure that’s hard to find anywhere else. Today, 

RVs remain a popular way to explore the country, with 

many travelers renting or purchasing an RV for their 

road trip. Whether you’re a seasoned RV enthusiast

EXPLORING Penn’s Woods 

RVing is a great way to Explore Pennsylvania. According to an independent study by Go RVing 

and the RV Industry Association (RVIA), traveling in an RV could save you money on your 

vacation. The CBRE Hotels Advisory Group study found travelers can save an average of up to 

60% for four-persons and 46% for two-person travel parties depending on the type of RV and 

type of vacation. 

That’s great news as you start to plan your weekend getaways and vacations for this year. 

As budgets tighten, Pennsylvania offers many fun outdoor activities. Parks and forests offer 

opportunities for camping, bird watching, hiking, fishing and more. In this issue of Explore 

Pennsylvania, we offer a sample of the Commonwealth’s great scenic trails for hiking. 

If you’re thinking about a new RV, but don’t know what to buy, check out our pages explaining 

the different types of RVs, the number of people they can sleep and their features. It’s 

important to do your research before you buy. When you’re ready to take a test drive, check

Properly operating your holding tanks isn’t 

bad…If you do it right!

I get it. Having been RVing for over 50 years and a pro tech for 

over 20, I have seen most of what can happen to cause, shall we 

say, a mishap. I have tested many products over the years that 

promise to make the process cleaner, better, and more manageable. 

Many of them do. But using your tanks correctly is essential; 

the best products can’t help a problem caused by misuse. 

The waste system in an RV is quite different from that in a house 

or building, so it needs to be operated differently. 

There are several differences between the waste system in an 

RV and a building system, the most notable of which is/are the 

holding tank(s). In a building, we never have to think about it. We 

open the drain, flush the toilet, and then go about our day. But 

as RVers, we collect our waste and then dump the tanks at the 

appropriate time. 

This is essential. We need the collected wastewater for the 

system to work correctly. If we don’t have that, the system fails 

because solids in the waste stream collect in the tanks and solidify. 

Not only does this create an odor issue, but the solids can build 

up enough to plug the tank, and that makes for a bad day. 

In my seminars and classes, when discussing holding tank maintenance, 

I recommend that an RVer start with about 1/8 of a tank 

of water and a favorite additive in the empty black tank. The 1/8 

is a guide; more is better, but many folks count on preserving 

holding tank space while boondocking. The idea is for any solids 

to be submerged in the water and additive. 

Remember: Water is your Best Friend. 

Add an entire bowl of water when introducing solids into the 

black tank. No solids? Little or no added water. That will help to 

keep the water level where it needs to be. If you can see down 

into your tank, see if the solid material is out of the water, and 

if so, add more water. 

When at a full hookup campsite, NEVER leave the dump valves 

open! Fill the tanks, then dump them, black first, then grey. Close 

the valves when done and replace the water/additive level in the 

black tank. 

So, why do I recommend this? Because first, the water is what 

actively liquefies the solids. Second, the hydraulic pressure, or 

flow, carries the solids out when draining the tank. If I have a 

tank full of solids without enough water, the water drains around 

them, and that’s it...the solids remain. And, while black tank 

flushers are fine, they can’t handle too much solid material, 

and the buildup begins. Continued on the next page 19

Toilet additives do two primary things: 

deodorize and dissolve. They assist the 

natural process and make it more pleasant. 

Helping dissolve allows the effluent to 

drain more thoroughly, and any remaining 

amount in the tank is flushed out with the 

black tank flusher. 

A good sewer hose kit makes dumping easy and clean. A wye can connect hoses if your 

RV has more than one termination. 

While I don’t recommend any particular 

RV toilet additive, I recommend ones without 

formaldehyde (illegal in some places 

anyway); they need to deodorize and break 

down waste. Otherwise, try different ones 

and see how they work. Do NOT use homemade 

brew suggestions, like mixing various 

chemicals, laundry detergents, etc. These 

can be dangerous and harmful to your RV’s 

waste system and the campground’s septic 

system. 

Toilet paper designed for RV/Marine use is 

also essential. It needs to break down quickly 

in water. Some deluxe papers can foul 

the black tank, so get a paper designed for 

RV use. Bob Livingston of RV Enthusiast 

magazine did a detailed article on toilet paper, 

which you can find on its website, www. 

rventhusiast.com. 

A good sewer hose kit and attachments are 

among the best accessory purchases. While 

not inexpensive, the super-duty kits from 

companies like Camco, Thetford, Valterra, 

and others will make your dumping chores 

far more straightforward and cleaner. I 

prefer a 15-foot kit with a 5-foot and a 10- 

foot extension. If your RV has two sewer 

termination outlets, add a wye and an 

additional hose to connect them all. Your 

sewer tool kit should include disposable mechanic’s 

grade gloves, a grey/black water 

utility water hose with shut off, and spare 

parts like gaskets or fittings. 

If you operate the system properly, there 

is very little maintenance required. Dump 

valves can get sticky or leaky and may 

require maintenance, and if you have an 

odor issue, there are companies across the

Some odor issues are a result of ventilation 

issues. Ventilation in an RV waste system 

is essential, and sometimes, the roof vents 

can become plugged, or windy conditions 

can encourage the tank odor to come into 

the RV when flushing. This can often be 

eliminated by changing the roof vent covers 

to a venturi-type product like Lippert’s 360- 

Siphon, which uses as little as a slight breeze 

to draw a vacuum in the tank, drawing odor 

out when flushing. 

So, while using the holding tanks on your 

RV may not be the most pleasurable part 

of the experience, it is a necessary one that 

you can become proficient at. If done 

correctly, you’ll have no problems and can 

enjoy your travels!

affairs at our institution for far 

too long, I asked, “Well, what 

are you going to do about it?” 

He replied, “Complain for 16 

more years and then retire, of 

course!” 

Perhaps you’ve heard a similar line 

echoing around your employer’s break 

room. Perhaps you’ve uttered something 

like it yourself? 


Is there another way to keep earning a 

living, and still save for the future without 

having to stare down the sentence of 

another decade (or more) in your current 

career track? 

Since we hit the road in 2012, we’ve gotten 

a ton of questions about working from the 

road. With a bit of creativity, a heavy dose 

of resourcefulness, and some dumb luck, 

we’ve found plenty of paid work opportunities 

(both online and in-person) while traveling 

in our little vintage canned-ham camper 

named Hamlet. We’ve also found ways to 

volunteer, allowing us to give back, meet 

new friends, and stretch our travel budget. 

While what we’ve done for pay has evolved 

significantly over the years, it’s important to 

note that we’ve never needed to work yearround; 

and not only have we never dipped 

into our savings, we still contribute to our 

retirement. While that concept might look a 

little different for us, it’s good to know that 

we’ll have options. 

Has every job been awesome? Not a 

chance. Some were truly challenging, 

while others were super fun and rewarding! 

No matter how it shaked out, we’ve always 

learned something important from each 

experience.

that you look at yourself as a collection of 

skills applicable to a variety of settings, 

rather than just a list of previous positions. 

Think outside of the confines of your 

well-grooved career path, and you’ll 

discover a whole host of new opportunities. 

• Seasonal jobs and side gigs are the 

name of the game if you seek to work 

full or part-time in beautiful parts 

of the country. From campgrounds, 

outdoor outfitters, state/national 

parks to retail stores, to lodges, 

restaurants, and more, we see 

“Help Wanted” signs everywhere. 

• Online jobs are plentiful and can 

be full or part-time. This type of work 

allows you to be wherever you want to 

be. Since the pandemic, this category 

has simply exploded! 

• Work-trade opportunities abound 

in national/state parks, as well as 

through workamping, organic 

farming, and various volunteer 

opportunities which cover your stay 

in exchange for a few days per week 

of work. 

• Starting your own mobile business. 

Millions of people have figured out 

how to do this while traveling – 

including ourselves with Freedom in 

a Can, LLC. We do writing, photography, 

videography, and seminars – all from 

the convenience of our camper, with 

out any electrical hook-ups. In fact, 

this article was written from an 

off-grid campground at a national 

historical park in central New Mexico 

using our Starlink! 

• Many careers offer traveling 

opportunities. While the medical 

field offers opportunities for traveling 

nurses, doctors, radiologists, and 

veterinarians, we’ve also met 

accountants, construction workers, 

financial advisors, videographers, 

graphic designers, occupational 

therapists, writers, sales people, 

photographers, and many others. 

Skip the Classifieds! 

We’ve found 99% of our seasonal 

and online jobs by simply asking up front, 

rather than combing through posted job 

listings. We decided where we wanted to 

be for the season, and then reached out. 

Here are just a few examples: 

• We emailed the owner of a gorgeous 

campground at which we had stayed 

a couple of years prior. In addition 

to a campground and rustic cabins, 

they offered eco-tours, guided kayak 

experiences, and sailing lessons. We 

sent over our resumes and references, 

and within a week, we both had jobs 

for the summer. 

• Just before we left to volunteer for 

4 months in Kenya, we contacted the 

manager at a popular winery in 

northern Michigan that we loved. 

Upon return from Africa, we had jobs 

waiting for us as Tasting Room 

Associates for the summer and fall 

seasons. 

• Another year, we secured volunteer 

positions with the Education Team at 

Acadia National Park in Maine for the 

spring and fall. To make money 

during the summer, we contacted a 

number of sea kayaking tour 

companies and campgrounds in the 

area. Within a few weeks, we both 

had full-time, seasonal jobs and a 

place to park Hamlet for the summer 

at a beautiful campground on Mt. 

Desert Island! 

None of these jobs were posted. We just 

put ourselves out there and asked, “Are 

you hiring?” A well-written, professional 

resume focusing more on your skill set, 

and less on your position history, never 

hurts. 

With that said, here are some resources to 

explore.

Seasonal Work 

Seasonal opportunities can be full or parttime 

and include campground hosting, working 

at national parks & state parks, guiding for 

tour companies, managing B&Bs, teaching at 

environmental education centers, working 

at ski resorts, restaurants, and retail stores… 

and so much more. 

If you are traveling as a couple (or with a family) 

one person may choose seasonal in-person 

work while the other works online at “home.”

bulletin boards, or libraries are a good place 

to begin. We’ve had great luck finding odd 

jobs by simply posting a well-written ad on 

Craigslist. We’ve done yard work, light 

construction, home repair, painting, and 

cleaned homes prior to sale/rental — just to 

name a few. Hutch also made some extra cash 

busking at farmers markets — the customers 

and vendors loved it!

Mobile & Online Jobs 

Do you already have a job that allows 

you to work from anywhere with an 

internet connection?

Extend Your Travel Budget with Work-Trade Volunteer Opportunities 

Work-Trade & Volunteer Opportunities 

Work-trade and volunteer opportunities are simply great ways to 

extend your travel budget! This could be a great option for couples 

in which one person is not yet retired, and the other is seeking 

something meaningful to dig into each day. You’ll not only get 

a place to park your rig, you’ll likely meet a great community of 

people. Some organizations also provide some meals, as well as 

bathroom, laundry, and wifi privileges. We’ve found that having 

these amenities can drastically lower our living expenses for a few 

weeks while we give of our time. 

The best part about these opportunities is that you don’t have to 

be an expert and you don’t need to work full-time, in fact, most are 

just part-time. You just need some related, transferable experience 

and a willingness to try new things. Here are just a few options 

while traveling around the country: 

Love to garden? Try organic farm work at small, family-owned 

farms – we’ve volunteered on farms from Maine to Hawaii. Check

Have office, people, or landscaping skills? Workamping and campground 

hosting are great options for folks of all ages and abilities. 

Some can accommodate families as well. 

Love music and festivals? Many festivals hire people and provide 

them an RV spot in exchange for their time. Check out Music

at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta for 11 days and had 

a blast! 

Have construction skills or want to learn some? Join a Habitat for 

Humanity RV Care-A-Vanner Group Build! These builds are held all 

over the country and many offer RV spaces and even hook-ups. 

Want to help with disaster relief? Join the DOVE program — a 

partnership between Escapees and the American Red Cross. 

When disasters strike, RVers are deployed to assist with a variety 

of critical needs. 

Have teaching experience and love the outdoors? The National 

Park Service and many state parks around the country need 

educators to lead interpretative tours for visitors. We’ve volunteered 

as Environmental Educators in a couple different parks. 

For local options, discover the myriad of opportunities at the 

Department of Conservation & Natural Resources of Pennsylvania 

and the Pennsylvania Parks & Forests Foundation. You’ll find 

volunteer work ranging from camp hosting and trail maintenance 

to geological mapping and fire prevention. 

So why even consider waiting around for another 16 years in a 

job you don’t like when you can simply jump into your RV and 

hit the road? You may not be ready to retire, you may not want to 

stop working, or maybe you need to support your road trip…the 

opportunities are out there. But we guarantee you that they won’t

America’s Largest RV Show’s ® Size & 

Unique Events Make It Worth Attending 

Pennsylvania is home to America’s Largest RV Show®. Held 

annually in September, the show is a great place to shop, 

compare and buy a new RV. 

Labor Day begins the week-long move-in process for 35 dealers 

and more than 40 manufacturers, who set-up shop at the Giant 

Center SM in Hershey, Pennsylvania. They bring in nearly 1,500 new 

RVs from the small pop-ups and travel trailers to camper vans to 

huge fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes. 

“It takes a lot of planning and logistics to get all the RVs in place at 

the Giant Center SM ,” says Heather Leach, executive director of the 

Pennsylvania RV and Camping Association. “Manufacturers and 

dealers spend months preparing for this huge event.” 

The 55th Annual America’s Largest RV Show®, presented by 

the Pennsylvania Recreation Vehicle and Camping Association 

(PRVCA), is set for September 11-15, 2024. As one of the largest RV 

shows and one of just two manufacturer shows in the country, it 

is truly a unique experience. Manufacturers often debut the 2025 

models and have representatives on-site to showcase RVs with 

new designs, floor plans and latest technology for 2025. Even if 

you’re not ready to buy an RV, it’s a great place to research your 

future RV purchase. 

Visiting the many manufacturers with multiple brands can take a 

lot of time, so attending America’s Largest RV Show® is a convenient 

place to see a lot of RVs in one location. Attendees can check out 

the many brands and models, find their dream RV, obtain financing 

and buy it. Buyers typically arrange to go to the dealership at 

another time to make sure the new RV undergoes a pre-delivery 

inspection and the dealer staff can instruct them on the features 

and how they work. 


It’s also a great place to find a new accessory, replace a part or 

upgrade your RV. More than 200 booth vendors with products for 

RVs, camping equipment, cleaning supplies, décor and personal 

care items are at the show. There are also many services, including 

finance companies, insurance, RV rentals, technology, vacation 

destinations, campgrounds and more.

PRVCA realizes education is important to maintaining 

and operating an RV correctly. Seminars with tips on 

buying an RV, maintenance, full-time RVing, towing, 

travel, insurance and safety are held hourly. In addition, 

several manufacturers offer educational opportunities 

and influencer appearances at their displays.

the Wild Side 

You don’t have to go far to enjoy spectacular views in Pennsylvania. Every area 

of the Commonwealth offers picturesque landscapes that make the trek worth 

your time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Pennsylvania has 12,000 miles of trails. 

So, lace up your sturdy shoes or boots and experience all that Pennsylvania 

has to offer. 

Mount Jewett to Kinzua Bridge Trail, Mount Jewett, PA 

Deemed the 2023 Pennsylvania Trail of the Year by the 

Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee, the Mount Jewett to 

Kinzua Bridge Trail is a 7.9 mile out and back trail near Mount 

Jewett, Pennsylvania. It is a section of the Knox and Kane Rail 

Trail. 

The former rail line is level and is considered an easy hike, and 

is wheelchair and stroller friendly. Signs along the trail provide 

information on the environmental and historical features in the 

area. The hike ends at the Kinzua Bridge, a viaduct that was 

once the longest and tallest railroad structure. After the bridge 

was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003, it was reimagined 

as a pedestrian walkway in 2011. Visitors can walk out the 600 

feet on the remaining supports and look through the partial 

glass platform at the end of the walkway to see the amazing

Take a Walk on the Wild Side 

BEFORE YOU GO 

• Plan a hike that matches your fitness level. You 

could get injured if the hike is too difficult. 

• Check the weather forecast. You don’t want to 

get caught in a thunderstorm or snowstorm. 

• Bring a friend - It’s more fun and safer to hike 

with other people. 

• Download the trail map. No cell service is likely 

in rural areas. Bring a compass to help with 

direction. 

• Bring snacks and water. You’ll want to stay 

hydrated on the trail. 

• Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes 

with good traction to navigate the trails. 

• Bring sunscreen and insect repellant. 

• Share your itinerary with a friend or family 

member. Let them know where you will be and 

when you plan to return. 

• Stay on the trail. Follow the trail markers. 

Minister Creek Trail, Allegheny National Forest, 

near Sheffield, PA 

The Allegheny National Forest is Pennsylvania’s only forest with a national designation. 

Known for its many recreational activities, hiking its scenic trails should be at the top 

of every visitor’s list. The Minister Creek Trail is a 6-mile loop, which is considered 

moderately challenging. Hikers will come across large rocks, beautiful streams and 

a scenic overlook, where camping is permitted. Along the trail, hikers climb to 1,048 

feet. White diamonds and blue markings provide direction on the trail. There is no cell 

service, so it’s recommended to download the trail map in advance. For more information,

Minister Creek Trail 

Presque Isle State Park, Erie, PA 

As Pennsylvania’s only seashore, Presque Isle State Park offers unique views and terrain 

for visitors as they hike its 11 miles of trails. The Dead Pond Trail is an easy two-mile up and 

back hike. Hikers trek through forest, pines and sand plains. Bird watchers are commonly 

found on the trail, since the area is popular for migrating birds. During certain times of the 

year, fluctuating lake levels may cause portions of the trails to flood, making them impassible

Quehanna Trail, Parker Dam State Park, Penfield, PA 

The Quehanna Trail in north central Pennsylvania passes through beautiful country in the 

Moshannon and Elk State Forests. The trailhead is in Parker Dam State Park, where hikers 

can follow the orange blazes on the trail. The entire trail is nearly 73 miles. From Parker 

Dam hikers follow the trail east to the Quehanna Wild Area toward Karthaus and Piper, 

then north toward Sinnemahoning and finally west through the Marion Brook Natural Area 

back to Parker Dam. For those visitors who want to enjoy a shorter hike, there are two blue 

blazed cross-connector trails and numerous side trails marked with the blue blazed side 

trails adding another 30 miles of trails. These trails allow visitors to plan shorter circuit hikes 

and enjoy the scenery off the main trail.

If You Get Lost on the Trail 

It is easy to get lost on the trails if you’re not paying attention or you 

miss a trail mark. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation 

and Natural Resources (DCNR), it’s important to remember the acronym 

S.T.O.P. if you get lost. 

Z STOP — When you realize you are lost, stop immediately. If you 

have a whistle, use it to draw attention to your location. 

ZTHINK— Try to remain calm and think about your situation. How 

did you get there? What are your options? Think before you take 

any action. 

Z OBSERVE — Identify what you have with you that may be useful, 

and take a look around the area. Are you on the trail? Is it safe to 

stay where you are? 

Z PLAN —If you have a plan set with your family or the people you 

are hiking with, follow through with it if you can. During this time, 

you’ll also figure out what you are going to do until you are found.

Laurel Highlands Trail 

The Laurel Highlands Trail is a 70-mile trail along Laurel Mountain. 

The trail runs from the Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle State Park 

to the Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown, Pa. The trail is marked 

every 100 feet with yellow blazes. Connector trails to and from the 

trailheads are marked with blue blazes. There are six trailheads 

that offer parking with space for 30 cars and overnight parking.

The Appalachian Trail 

The Appalachian Trail (The A.T.) is a 2,190+ mile public trail through 

the Appalachian Mountains from Maine to Georgia. It runs through 

Pennsylvania from the New York and New Jersey borders to the 

Maryland border, providing 229.8 miles of great hiking. The trail 

difficulty ranges from easy in the southern part of the state to 

challenging areas north of the Susquehanna River, known for its 

rocky terrain. 

Mount Minsi – Appalachian Trail, 

Delaware Water Gap, PA 

The hike to Mount Minsi is a 4.8 mile loop trail beginning in 

Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania. Hikers can enter the trail 

from the Lake Lenape parking area. The trail is considered 

moderate in difficulty since it has some rocky areas and can get 

steep going down from the mountain. The hike features several 

waterfalls along the trail and features grand views of the Delaware 

River. The elevation reaches 1,036 ft. and is popular with hikers and 

bird watchers. Dogs are welcome on the trail, but they must be on

Wissahickon Valley Park, Philadelphia 

Wissahickon Valley Park is an 1,800-acre gorge where the 

Wissahickon Creek passes through and drops more than 

100 feet as it passes through to the Schuylkill River. Visitors 

looking for an easier trail can take Forbidden Drive, a wide, 

flat, gravel trail. More experienced hikers can hike the park’s 

upper trails, which follow its rolling terrain and can be steep 

and rocky. The creek is stocked with trout, while its meadows 

make great opportunities for bird watching. Visit the park’s

The Forbidden Trail, Wissahickon Valley Park 

Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Gardners, PA 

Pine Grove Furnace State Park provides another opportunity 

to explore the Appalachian Trail. Surrounded by Michaux State 

Forest, the four-mile hike is the half-way point for the A.T. and 

features trails that loop around scenic, mountainous overlooks, and 

Laurel and Fuller lakes. The most famous trail is the Pole Steeple 

Trail, a steep 75-mile trail that ends in a spectacular overlook with 

quartzite outcropping overlooking the entire park and surrounding 

valleys. 

There are many other activities in the park, including swimming 

in the two lakes, fishing, historic buildings, a 19th century iron furnace, 

the Appalachian Trail Museum, and education programs. Just 

south of the park in the Michaux State Forest is a trailhead with

Be aware that November 15 to December 15 is not the best time to 

hike parts of the A.T. It passes through state games lands, which 

are managed for hunting. During that time period, hunters and 

non-hunters are required to wear at least 250 square inches of 

fluorescent orange material on the head, neck and back combined 

or a fluorescent orange hat on the A.T. running through state game 

lands (the northern 2/3 of the state).

Thousand Steps Trail, Mapleton, PA 

Thousand Steps Trail, Mapleton, PA 

For hikers looking for more of a challenge, the Thousand Steps 

Trail is it. The 3.4 mile trail is part of the Standing Stone Trail and 

requires a trek up 1,000 stairs to the top of Jacks Mountain and 

spectacular views. The steps were originally built so that workers 

for Ledge Quarry could get to and from their jobs every day. The 

trail is marked every 100 steps to help hikers keep track of how 

many steps climbed. Climbers will experience 850 feet of elevation 

change over a half mile. At the top, the remnants of a train shed 

and stone quarry remain. Stunning views are the reward for the 

challenging 1.5 mile climb. Learn more at standingstonetrail.org.
