Let us praise the most auspicious bride of
Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress of Sinai,
our aid and our help. For, she brilliantly
silenced the eloquence of the impious by the
sword of the spirit, and now, crowned as a martyr,
she asks great mercy for all.

Ιn giving birth, you did preserve your virginity;
in your dormition you did not forsake the world
O Theotokos. You were translated onto life,

COLOSSIANS (3:4-11)
Brethren, when Christ who is our life appears,
then you also will appear with him in
glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly
in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil
desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
On account of these the wrath of God is
coming upon the sons of disobedience. In
these you once walked, when you lived in
them. But now put them all away: anger,
wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from
your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing
that you have put off the old nature with
its practices and have put on the new nature,
which is being renewed in knowledge
after the image of its creator. Here there
cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and
uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,
free man, but Christ is all, and in all.

ἀκαθαρσίαν, πάθος, ἐπιθυμίαν κακήν, καὶ
τὴν πλεονεξίαν, ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰδωλολατρεία,
διʼ ἃ ἔρχεται ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς

GOSPEL READING
LUKE (17:12-19)
At that time, as Jesus entered a village, he was met by ten lepers,
who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus,
Master, have mercy on us." When he saw them he said to them,
"Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they
were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was
healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell
on his face at Jesus's feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found
to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And he said to him: "Rise and go
your way; your faith has made you well."

Fr. Anthony’s Thoughts about the Sunday Gospel
The Ten Lepers St Luke 17 (12-19)
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In today's Gospel, we learn that our Lord healed all ten lepers
but only one out of ten responded positively to His Blessings.
The Love of our Lord was for all ten Lepers, and it is for all of
us. It is there to transform the hearts of all men and women of all ages and backgrounds
that have and will come to Him. In our tradition we see how ordinary people
like us respond to the life-transforming Love of the Lord and become saints. Sometimes
they chose to leave everything and took up their cross and followed Him until
the end of their long lives to become saints.
The question for us is how we respond to the call of the Lord. He looks at all of
us and loves us all. Sometimes like the nine lepers we unfortunately get caught up in
the cares of this world and we do not respond to His love with thankfulness. We get
carried away with our success and anxieties like Martha who wanted to impress the
Lord with her work and like the young man who wished to inherit the Kingdom of
God but did not want to give up his possessions. I hope and pray that by aligning our
priorities we can find the will to sit at His feet and listen to His word like Martha’s sister
Mary did and we can fallow Him by responding to His call like the disciples did.
The Good News is that He Loves us and no matter what happens He knows that both
Martha and the young man and even the nine lepers will come back to Him.
Christ knows that even if it took centuries all of humanity would eventually
come to him because He is the Way and the Life. He knows that we all need to hear
and receive His blessing given to the thankful leper “Rise and go your way, your faith
has made you well”.

Οι σκέψεις του π. Αντωνίου για το Ευαγγέλιο της Κυριακής
Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,
Στο σημερινό Ευαγγέλιο, μαθαίνουμε ότι ο Κύριός μας
θεράπευσε και τους δέκα λεπρούς αλλά μόνο ένας από
τους δέκα ανταποκρίθηκε θετικά στις Ευλογίες Του.
Η αγάπη του Κυρίου μας ήταν και για τους δέκα Λεπρούς, και είναι για
όλους εμάς. Υπάρχει για να μεταμορφώσει τις καρδιές όλων των ανδρών και
γυναικών όλων των ηλικιών και υποβάθρων που έχουν έρθει και θα έρθουν σε
Αυτόν. Στην παράδοσή μας, βλέπουμε πως απλοί άνθρωποι σαν εμάς
ανταποκρίνονται στη μεταμορφωτική Αγάπη του Κυρίου και γίνονται άγιοι.
Μερικές φορές διάλεξαν να τα αφήσουν όλα και πήραν τον σταυρό τους και Τον
ακολούθησαν μέχρι το τέλος της μακρόχρονης ζωής τους για να γίνουν άγιοι.
Το ερώτημα για εμάς είναι πώς ανταποκρινόμαστε στο κάλεσμα του
Κυρίου. Μας κοιτάζει όλους και μας αγαπάει όλους. Μερικές φορές, όπως οι
εννέα λεπροί, εμείς, δυστυχώς, παγιδευόμαστε στις φροντίδες αυτού του κόσμου
και δεν ανταποκρινόμαστε στην αγάπη Του με ευγνωμοσύνη. Παρασυρόμαστε με
την επιτυχία και τις αγωνίες μας όπως η Μάρθα που ήθελε να εντυπωσιάσει τον
Κύριο με το έργο της και σαν τον νεαρό άνδρα που ήθελε να κληρονομήσει τη
Βασιλεία του Θεού αλλά δεν ήθελε να εγκαταλείψει τα υπάρχοντά του. Ελπίζω και
προσεύχομαι ότι ευθυγραμμίζοντας τις προτεραιότητές μας να μπορέσουμε να
βρούμε τη θέληση να καθίσουμε στα πόδια Του και να ακούσουμε τον λόγο Του
όπως έκανε η αδερφή της Μάρθας η Μαρία και να μπορέσουμε να Τον
ακολουθήσουμε ανταποκρινόμενοι στο κάλεσμά Του όπως έκαναν οι μαθητές. Τα
καλά νέα είναι ότι μας Αγαπά και ότι ό,τι κι αν συμβεί, ξέρει ότι τόσο η Μάρθα
όσο και ο νεαρός άνδρας, ακόμα και οι εννέα λεπροί θα επιστρέψουν κοντά Του.
Ο Χριστός ξέρει ότι ακόμα κι αν χρειάζονταν αιώνες όλη η ανθρωπότητα
θα ερχόταν τελικά σε αυτόν γιατί Αυτός είναι η Οδός και η Ζωή. Γνωρίζει ότι όλοι
χρειαζόμαστε να ακούσουμε και να λάβουμε την ευλογία Του που δόθηκε στον
ευγνώμονα λεπρό «Σήκω και πάρε το δρόμο σου, η πίστη σου σε έσωσε».

Sunday following the Feast of the Saint we offer Artoklasia and a trisagion service for the
good health of the living members and eternal memory of the deceased members of the
donor family. This Sunday we celebrate the feast of St. Anthony, St. Athanasios & St.
Mark of Ephesos.

St. Athanasios
Saint Athanasius the Great, Archbishop of Alexandria, was a great Father of the
Church and a pillar of Orthodoxy. He was born around the year 297 in the city of Alexandria
into a family of pious Christians. He received a fine secular education, but he
acquired more knowledge by diligent study of the Holy Scripture. In his childhood, the
future hierarch Athanasius became known to Saint Alexander the Patriarch of Alexandria
(May 29). A group of children, which included Athanasius, were playing at the
seashore. The Christian children decided to baptize their pagan playmates.
The young Athanasius, whom the children designated as “bishop”, performed the Baptism,
precisely repeating the words he heard in church during this sacrament. Patriarch
Alexander observed all this from a window. He then commanded that the children and their parents be
brought to him. He conversed with them for a long while, and determined that the Baptism performed by the
children was done according to the Church order. He acknowledged the Baptism as real and sealed it with
the sacrament of Chrismation. From this moment, the Patriarch looked after the spiritual upbringing of Athanasius
and in time brought him into the clergy, at first as a reader, and then he ordained him as a deacon.
It was as a deacon that Saint Athanasius accompanied Patriarch Alexander to the First Ecumenical Council
at Nicea in the year 325. At the Council, Saint Athanasius refuted of the heresy of Arius. His speech met
with the approval of the Orthodox Fathers of the Council, but the Arians, those openly and those secretly so,
came to hate Athanasius and persecuted him for the rest of his life.
After the death of holy Patriarch Alexander, Saint Athanasius was unanimously chosen as his successor in
the See of Alexandria. He refused, accounting himself unworthy, but at the insistence of all the Orthodox
populace that it was in agreement, he was consecrated bishop when he was twenty-eight, and installed as the
archpastor of the Alexandrian Church. Saint Athanasius guided the Church for forty-seven years, and during
this time he endured persecution and grief from his antagonists. Several times he was expelled from Alexandria
and hid himself from the Arians in desolate places, since they repeatedly tried to kill him. Saint Athanasius
spent more than twenty years in exile, returned to his flock, and then was banished again.
There was a time when he remained as the only Orthodox bishop in the area, a moment when all the other
bishops had fallen into heresy. At the false councils of Arian bishops he was deposed as bishop. Despite
being persecuted for many years, the saint continued to defend the purity of the Orthodox Faith, and he
wrote countless letters and tracts against the Arian heresy.
When Julian the Apostate (361-363) began a persecution against Christians, his wrath first fell upon Saint
Athanasius, whom he considered a great pillar of Orthodoxy. Julian intended to kill the saint in order to
strike Christianity a grievous blow, but he soon perished himself. Mortally wounded by an arrow during a
battle, he cried out with despair: “You have conquered, O Galilean.” After Julian’s death, Saint Athanasius
guided the Alexandrian Church for seven years and died in 373, at the age of seventy-six.
Numerous works of Saint Athanasius have been preserved; four Orations against the Arian heresy; also an
Epistle to Epictetus, bishop of the Church of Corinth, on the divine and human natures in Jesus Christ; four
Epistles to Serapion, Bishop of Thmuis, about the Holy Spirit and His equality with the Father and the Son,
directed against the heresy of Macedonius.
Other apologetic works of the Saint in defense of Orthodoxy have been preserved, among which is the Letter
to the Emperor Constantius. Saint Athanasius wrote commentaries on Holy Scripture, and books of a moral
and didactic character, as well as a biography of Saint Anthony the Great (January 17), with whom Saint
Athanasius was very close. Saint John Chrysostom advised every Orthodox Christian to read this Life.
The memory of Saint Athanasius is celebrated also on January 18 with Saint Cyril of Alexandria.

St. Mark of Ephesus
Saint Mark Eugenikos, Archbishop of Ephesus, was a stalwart defender of
Orthodoxy at the Council of Florence. He would not agree to a union with
Rome which was based on theological compromise and political expediency
(the Byzantine Emperor was seeking military assistance from the West
against the Moslems who were drawing ever closer to Constantinople).
Saint Mark countered the arguments of his opponents, drawing from the
well of pure theology, and the teachings of the holy Fathers. When the members of his
own delegation tried to pressure him into accepting the Union he replied, “There can be no
compromise in matters of the Orthodox Faith.”
Although the members of the Orthodox delegation signed the Tomos of Union,
Saint Mark was the only one who refused to do so. When he returned from Florence, Saint
Mark urged the inhabitants of Constantinople to repudiate the dishonorable document of
union. He died in 1457 at the age of fifty-two, admired and honored by all.

Dear Parishioners,
We have started a new year and I pray that God blesses us all in this New Year
abundantly. I pray your family and friends are healthy. This year I have committed to visiting
as many of our community members as possible.
As you know, every year we celebrate house blessings beginning around Theophany,
the Feast of Christ's baptism. It is important that we bless the things that we
use. At this time of the year not only do we bless our homes, but also our vehicles and
our pets but most importantly the church has many ways of blessing us and our children.
A house blessing is also a great way of strengthening our relationship with the
community. Please fill out the enclosed card and let me know when you would like me to
bless your home and family.
Please note that all you have to provide is a bowl of water, an Icon of Christ
or a Patron Saint, a candle, and a few branches of basil with which we will sprinkle
the house with the holy water.

έχω δεσμευτεί να επισκεφτώ όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερα μέλη της κοινότητάς μας.
Όπως γνωρίζετε, κάθε χρόνο ευλογούμε τα σπίτια μας ξεκινώντας γύρω στα
Θεοφάνεια, την εορτή της βάπτισης του Χριστού. Είναι σημαντικό να ευλογούμε τα
πράγματα που χρησιμοποιούμε. Αυτή την εποχή του χρόνου όχι μόνο ευλογούμε τα
σπίτια μας, αλλά και τα οχήματά μας και τα κατοικίδιά μας. Αλλά το πιο σημαντικό είναι
ότι η εκκλησία έχει πολλούς τρόπους να ευλογεί εμάς και τα παιδιά μας.
Η ευλογία του σπιτιού είναι επίσης ένας πολύ καλός τρόπος για να ενισχύσουμε
τη σχέση μας με την κοινότητα. Παρακαλώ συμπληρώστε την συνημμένη κάρτα και
ενημερώστε με πότε θέλετε να ευλογήσω το σπίτι και την οικογένειά σας.
Σημειώστε ότι το μόνο πράγμα που πρέπει να διατέθετε είναι ένα μπολ με
νερό, μια εικόνα του Χριστού ή ενός Πολιούχου, ένα κερί και μερικά κλαδιά
βασιλικού με τα οποία θα ραντίσουμε το σπίτι με τον αγιασμό.
Ο Θεός να σας έχει καλά και ανυπομονώ να σας δω σύντομα.
