CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
NEIL
GOLDING
7
FIRST, A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE EXETER
CHIEFS PLAYERS, COACHES AND FANS.
This game has been circled
in the diary for a long time,
we have had some brilliant
battles with Exeter Chiefs
over the years and I’m sure
today will be no different.
The mood in the changing
room after that first game of
the season was I’m sure one
that the players won’t want
to experience again, and in
front of a sold out crowd this
evening they will want to put
on a show to get back in to
that top four.
The atmosphere here last
weekend for that incredible
comeback win over Lyon was
one to savour, the way the
team stuck to it when things
were not going their way was
so impressive and then to
book our place in the Last 16
gave everyone huge joy.
Of course the draw means
we’ll be heading back to
Bordeaux in April, and whilst
that is a few months away,
that is a game that we
are already very excited
about.
There is a lot of
speculation about
our players at the moment
in the media, and as a club
we would like to assure you
that as and when anything
is ready to be announced you
will hear about it first.
After today there is a long
break for the Men’s team
without any Premiership
matches during the Six
Nations window. I’m sure
that will give them some time
for some much needed rest
ahead of what could well
be a blockbuster end to the
season.
There is a great chance to get
your rugby fix on Friday 23rd
February when we welcome
Leinster for what should be a
cracker under the lights again.
Both sides will be packed full
of quality so we’d love you to
join us for that one!
With the Six Nations about
to start, it goes without
saying that we wish all of
our representatives the very
best over the next couple of
months. The tournament is
always one of the highlights
in the sporting calendar and
to see so many Saracens
involved always gives us
immense pride.
The next time the team run
out in Premiership action will
be at The Showdown 4 at the
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium!
Sales for this one have been
brilliant so far and we are
well on track for a sell out
so please book now to avoid
missing out on what will be a
brilliant day.
The Women had a tough
result away at Gloucester last
week but with a rest weekend
now I’m sure they will use
the time to reflect and we
are all excited to see them
respond in the next stage of
the season.
We were delighted to
announce this week that
Shawbrook have become
the Principal Partner of the
Saracens Mavericks. Our
relationship with them is
fantastic and it is a privilege
for us to have them on board
for what should be a brilliant
netball season.
Enjoy this evening, I’m sure it
will be one to remember!
Neil

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN
OWEN
FARRELL
GOOD
AFTERNOON
AND WELCOME
TO STONEX
STADIUM FOR
TODAY’S MATCH
AGAINST
EXETER CHIEFS.
8
With the break coming up
the whole group is massively
excited by today’s game and
we know that we need to
empty the tank from start to
finish.
Exeter are a team that we
always enjoy playing against.
The rivalry goes back a long
time and after what happened
on the first day of the season
we feel like we need to put in a
proper Saracens performance
today.
With the league having less
games this year there is no
margin for error, and we feel
a win today would put us in
a great place for when the
climax of the campaign comes
around.
The win over Lyon last
weekend had lots of ups and
downs but we felt like in the
second half we were much
more ourselves. We showed
some real resilience to come
from behind and to come away
with all five points has given
us plenty to build on ahead of
today.
The energy in the changing
room after and also in training
this week has reminded us all
how much we love doing what
we do!
We don’t have a Premiership
match until The Showdown
which is rare at this time of
year but we’ll be taking the
time to have some rest and
then come back in raring to go
to make sure we can hit the
ground running for when the
league restarts.
The Showdown is always an
unbelievable day for everyone
at the club and with so many
tickets already sold there is
real excitement around for
what should be an amazing
spectacle.
I can’t wait to support all of
our lads over the next couple of
months in Six Nations action. I
know they will do us proud and
hopefully the England boys can
get their hands on the trophy!
Thanks for all your support so
far this season, we’ll be doing
everything we can to get the
right result this evening!
See you all after - enjoy the
game!

SCENE SETTER
If one ghost was exorcised
at Stone X Stadium last
weekend with the victory
over Lyon in the Investec
Champions Cup, then there
is another one to be purged
today.
The 39-24 win over the Top
14 side went some way to
making amends for the
crushing 55-15 defeat on
French soil against Bordeaux-
Begles the previous weekend.
That result necessitated a
major reaction to reach the
Round of 16.
Mark McCall certainly got
what he wanted in terms
of a backlash and the
biggest prize in the end was
the chance to go back to
Bordeaux on the weekend of
5-7 April to gain some muchneeded
revenge – and to
clinch a quarter final slot.
Today, however, is about a
different sort of revenge.
16

17
When the ‘Men in Black’
opened their Gallagher
Premiership season against
Exeter Chiefs in Round 1 back
in October they conceded 11
tries in a record 65-10 defeat.
It was 41-0 by half-time on a
day to forget.
Well, almost! The feeling in
the dressing room at Sandy
Park will no doubt have
entered the minds of the
players this week in the buildup
to the final Premiership
fixture before the Six Nations
kicks-off. For the record,
these were the teams who
played back in October – it
will be interesting to see how
the line-ups differ to today.
Last weekend’s win included a
final round high of 18 carries
from England hooker Theo
Dan in his man of the match
performance. Both Saracens
and England are lucky to have
him available to challenge
Jamie George for the hooking
duties.
In his post-match interview
he perfectly summed up the
feeling of the playing group:
“Tonight was a special night
for a number of reasons. Over
the past few weeks, we’ve
had a lot of disappointing
performances and results.
Last weekend (in Bordeaux)
was pretty tough being
part of that. We have had
a lot of tough and honest
conversations this week.
“Our performances have
slipped recently, and this
week (v Lyon) was all about
bringing our standards back
up and making sure we put
in a brilliant performance in
front of a home crowd.
“Lyon had a few runaway
tries and this week it was
brilliant how we responded
to them. Last week Bordeaux
scored a lot off turnovers, and
we didn’t respond to them. It
was a brilliant reaction.”
Of course, Dan will be missing
from today’s game, along
with his fellow England Six
Nations squad members
Maro Itoje, Nick Isiekwe,
Elliot Daly, Jamie George and
Ben Earl. The Chiefs will be
missing the recalled Henry
Slade and the uncapped duo
of Immanuel Feyi-Waboso
and Ethan Roots.
They say the table never lies
and the current standings in
the Gallagher Premiership
shows the Chiefs in fourth
place with 35 points from
their seven wins in 11 games.
Sarries are just behind in sixth
place with 31 points and six
wins.
That could all change today if
things go to plan. It’s time for
another reaction!

CLUB
NEWS
JAMIE GEORGE TO CAPTAIN
ENGLAND IN GUINNESS SIX
NATIONS
ON THE DAY THAT HE CONFIRMED
A NEW TWO-YEAR CONTRACT AT
SARACENS, JAMIE GEORGE WAS ALSO
ANNOUNCED AS THE NEW ENGLAND
CAPTAIN!
The hooker becomes the
135th player to be appointed
England captain since
Frederick Stokes first led an
England side in 1871.
Five other Sarries are also
in the squad, Theo Dan, Ben
Earl, Nick Isiekwe, Maro
Itoje and Elliot Daly will all
be involved during the Six
Nations.
On naming Jamie George
as England Captain, Steve
Borthwick said:
“When I asked Jamie to be
captain for this forthcoming
series, I could sense his
18
excitement and pride at being
asked to lead his country.
I am delighted that he has
accepted the role.
“Jamie has been a respected
leader in this group for
a number of years now.
With 85 England caps to
his name, he is a quietly
influential character who
has an excellent tactical
understanding and who
sets high standards, whilst
building strong relationships
with the people around
him. This, together with
his previous experiences of
captaining Saracens and The
British & Irish Lions, leave him
well-placed to lead the team.”
JAMIE GEORGE NEW
CONTRACT
SARACENS IS DELIGHTED TO CONFIRM
THAT JAMIE GEORGE HAS SIGNED A
NEW TWO-YEAR CONTRACT AT THE
CLUB.
The hooker, who has been a
stalwart at StoneX Stadium
for well over a decade
is a leading figure in the
English game, and will
continue in North London
until at least 2026.
The 33-year-old has been at
Saracens for almost 20 years
after originally joining as a
14-year-old in the academy,
and he has gone on to be
become one of the most
successful players in the
history of the club.
George is delighted to have
put pen to paper for another
two years as he closes in on
300 appearances for the
club, and a century for his
country.
“I’m ecstatic to be staying
here for another couple of
years, it’s so pleasing for me.”
Said the hooker.
He added: “In my mind I
always wanted to stay, I’ve
grown up here, have been
here for a long time and am
excited by what is next.
19
This whole organisation is
based around people, and I’m
excited by the people that we
have here for the future. It’s
an exciting time to be here, I
can’t stress enough that my
motivation is as high as ever.
I’ve had some amazing times
here and have enjoyed every
part of it. My best mates are
here and we all can’t wait see
what the future brings.”

Stainless steal.
In 1972, famed designer Gérald Genta created an oxymoron. Priced more than many
precious metal rivals, the ‘luxury stainless steel timepiece’ was not an immediate
success. But eventually its tough, elegant body, integrated bracelet and patterned
dial caught on. A watch that dressed up for dinner. Or down, at the pool. Today’s
40mm, base automatic of that original watch costs £22,850 more than the new
‘Twelve’ - named for its dodecagon-sided bezel and rear lock ring. Our watch is
thinner, goes deeper and offers a choice of C1/BL Grade X1-lumed dials. A polished,
brushed and sandblasted case of daylight (and night time) robbery?
Do your research.

HOWEVER STRANGE IT MIGHT SEEM SEEING AN EXETER CHIEFS TEAM WITHOUT
THE LIKES OF THE SIMMONDS BROTHERS, SAM AND JOE, LUKE COWAN-DICKIE, JACK
NOWELL, STUART HOGG, JONNY GRAY, TOMAS FRANCIS AND SAM SKINNER, YOU’D
HAVE TO SAY THAT ROB BAXTER IS DOING A GREAT JOB IN REBUILDING HIS TEAM AS
THE CLUB FUTURE-PROOFS ITSELF FOR FURTHER ASSAULTS ON MAJOR TITLES.
31
The Devon club’s rise from
the Championship to double
Gallagher Premiership
winners and Investec
Champions Cup winners
was as dramatic as it was
calculated. Now, as the TV
commentators keep alluding
to the new Chiefs line-up,
Exeter 2.0 is on the rise.
What Baxter and his
coaching team did in the past
in uncovering rough diamonds
and polishing them so they
shone brightly enough to
win international honours –
Francis, Harry Williams, Alec
Hepburn and even England
new boy Immanuel Feyi-
Waboso – he is in the process
of doing it all over again.
Having given the captain’s
arm-band to lock Dafydd
Jenkins at the age of 19 he
has seen him flourish into
a player who will now lead
Wales into the Six Nations
with a World Cup and 12 caps
behind him – all by the age
of 21!
While there are still some wily
old foxes in his ranks – Henry
Slade, Olly Woodburn, Ollie
Devoto, Jack Yeandle and
Jacques Vermeulen – the
new kids on the block are
blossoming very quickly. Josh
Hodge has filled Hogg’s boots
at full back, Harvey Skinner
is flourishing at No 10, Joe
Hawkins forsook further
Welsh honours by switching
from the Ospreys and Christ
Tshiunza is another Welsh
giant who can fill in the back
or second row alongside his
World Cup mate Jenkins.
There is plenty of power
coming through up from with
the giant Fijian Rusi Tiuma
and Greg Fisilau is the back
row, as well as their fellow
England U20 colleague, prop
Marcus Street.
Having won the
Championship title in 2010
and earned the right to enter
the top-flight of England
rugby, they have been one of
the biggest success stories in
the professional game in the
northern hemisphere.
As well as winning the
Premiership title in 2017 and
2020, they were runners up
in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Add in three Anglo-Welsh Cup
triumphs in 2014, 2018 and
2023, as well as two other
finals in that competition,
and their epic Champions
Cup victory over Racing 92 in
2020 and it is a success story
without parallel for a club
that used to rejoice in winning
the Devon Cup.
Just how good a job Baxter is
making of his re-jig was made
perfectly evident to Saracens
fans when they ran in 11 tries
in a record 65-10 victory
over the ‘Men in Black’ at
Sandy Park in Round 1 of this
season’s Premiership.
Last weekend they were
beaten in Bayonne, yet still
qualified for a home draw
in the Round of 16 in the
Investec Champions Cup.
While Saracens face a trip to
Bordeaux-Begles, the Chiefs
will receive west country
rivals Bath at Sandy Park.

2019 final and at the 2015
tournament – he has bounced
back to his brilliant best this
season as the senior pro in
the Chiefs side. Started life
as an outside half but has
turned into a Rolls Royce in
the midfield for both club
and country. Won the Junior
World Championship with
England in back-to-back
SARACENS SUPPORTERS
ASSOCIATION (SSA)
E Saracens Supporters Association
D @sarriessupport
Q ssa_racens
A very good afternoon to
you from all of us in the SSA,
and welcome back to StoneX
for the second consecutive
Saturday and what is forecast
to be slightly warmer weather
than last week!
We’d firstly like to extend a
warm welcome to the players,
coaching team and of course
the supporters of our long-time
rivals Exeter Chiefs; we hope
you’ve all had a good journey up
from Devon and we know that
despite the long trip you’ll be
here in numbers as always, and
will undoubtedly contribute to
a great atmosphere as you get
behind your players!
The afternoon looks set fair
for an exciting game against
a new-look young Chiefs side
that’s been playing some very
attack-minded rugby this
season and with Sarries of
course looking to gain revenge
for that 65-10 beating at Sandy
Park on the first day of the
Premiership campaign back in
October!
Staying with today’s game,
we have previously contacted
members to let them know that
our own Gareth Simpson has a
well-established charity which
recycles rugby kit, collecting
it and redistributing it to less
privileged youngsters, primarily
in his home country – South
Africa. Saracens and Saracens
Foundation are supporting
Rugby Recycled – an initiative
which Gareth launched while
he was at still at high school in
Durban in South Africa when he
played against a development
team from a local township,
some of whose players played
in trainers, school shoes and
even bare feet. From small
beginnings, Rugby Recycled
has grown rapidly and has
been able to provide kit and
equipment to thousands of
youngsters to enable them to
play rugby.
So look out for collection points
today, and if you have been
able to donate something –
thank you!!!!
Doubtless you’ll all still be
digesting the news that,
following weeks of speculation
in the media, our captain and
talisman Owen Farrell will
officially be leaving North
London for Paris on 1st July
to join Top 14 giants Racing 92
on what has been reported to
be a two-year contract; there
will – rightly of course - be
plenty of tributes in the coming
weeks and months to Owen’s
incredible service to both
Saracens and England over the
past decade and a half, and
indeed so many of you have
written about Owen on social
media in the days since his
move was confirmed.
Suffice to say for now that
Owen will leave us with nothing
but our immense gratitude, our
enormous affection for a player
and a man who will always be
“one of our own”, our sincere
wishes for a hugely successful
spell with Les Ciel et Blanc –
we’re sure that many Sarries
fans will be planning a trip to
the stunning La Defense Arena
to see Owen play – and for a
wonderful time with his family
enjoying life in Paris.
While nothing can ever
be certain in this game of
ours, many supporters have
expressed the hope and belief
that Owen will return to Sarries
one day – and we’re very sure
he knows that if this did come
to pass he would be welcomed
back with open arms.
Owen will undoubtedly want to
ensure that his last few months
in the black and red will be
memorable so, in every game,
let’s get right behind him with
all the noise and passion we
can, and enjoy every minute of
his remaining time with us!
Last Saturday, following a late
evening kick-off and in nearfreezing
conditions, Sarries
Men – we like to think boosted
by a fantastic pre-match fans’
guard of honour organised
by the SSA - bounced back in
style from that torrid evening
in Bordeaux with a 39-24 win
over Lyon after coming back
from being 5-17 down at the
interval, and fuelled by a
second half brace from Maro,
to seal a spot in the last 16
of the Investec Champions
Cup, when we will again visit
Stade Chabal-Delmas over
the weekend of 5th-7th April
with a chance to avenge our
defeat by UBB – we hope as
many of you as possible will be
able make the trip, and those
of us who were there earlier
this month can fully attest
to the delights of the city, its
36

famous wine and excellent
food, the very welcoming
UBB fans and the amazing
atmosphere at the stadium.
SSA Members should look out
for ticketing information which
we will provide immediately
we confirm arrangements with
UBB – please be patient, bear
with us, and keep an eye on
your inboxes!
Earlier in the day last Saturday,
Sarries Women were facing a
challenging trip to Kingsholm
and so it proved a difficult
afternoon as our previously
unbeaten table-toppers lost 24-
15 to last season’s champions
Gloucester-Hartpury in a game
that was often on a knife-edge,
but with Kelsey Jones scoring
a hat-trick for the hosts before
being sent off for a head-tohead
tackle, leaving the Cherry
and Whites second in the table
just one point behind Sarries,
with a game in hand.
We can’t let that game pass
without a very special mention
to the intrepid band of Sarries
supporters including SSA
members Nigel Eaton, David
Loxham, Barbara Buxton and
Colin Garrett who not only
drove down to Gloucester
to give the Women such
passionate support but actually
made it back to StoneX in
time for the Men’s game. Such
dedication deserved nothing
less than a huge round of
applause!!
NEXT UP
Next up for the Men will be
our much-anticipated friendly
with Leinster on Friday 23rd
February, followed by a few
weeks’ break during the Six
Nations before Showdown
4 – the showpiece game
against Quins at the incredible
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
on 23rd March – if you haven’t
been to this event before,
we urge you to experience it
(tickets are selling fast!). You’ll
thank us!!
There is no Women’s game
today, so their next fixture will
be at StoneX on Saturday 3rd
February when Trailfinders
Women travel across from
West London – at the time of
writing the kick-off is scheduled
for 14.30.
Also in action earlier today were
the Mavericks, who were due to
take on Strathclyde Sirens in a
sold-out pre-season encounter
at Hertfordshire Sports Village,
following on from which will be
the pre-season fixture away
to Manchester Thunder on 3rd
February.
EVENTS
Tied in with the visit of our dear
friends from Le LOU, a group
of SSA members met up with
a healthy contingent of fans
from France for an evening of
beer, burgers, one eye on the
(for Sarries) crucial Connacht-
Bristol game and a lot of rugby
chat at the wolfpack in West
Hampstead – a fantastic
evening, and thanks are due
to our Events supremo Nigel
Eaton for making it happen.
On Saturday, a large group
of SSA members enjoyed a
marvellous pre-match at Metro
Italia, with hearty and warming
pasta and pizzas providing a bit
of defence against the cold –
again, thanks to Nigel!!
COME AND SEE US…
For Chiefs fans who may
be reading this, do please
also come and say ‘hello’ to
the Saracens Supporters
Association at our base
under what we fondly call our
gazebo which I located near
the North Stand and right by
The Oasis. You can’t miss us -
there’s always a large group in
attendance, chatting, having
a drink together, with, as ever,
our Matchday Team working
hard to help with membership
enquiries, members’ badge
collections and away ticket
enquiries. We’d love to see you
and share thoughts on today’s
game, how the season’s going
so far and what’s happening
in the rugby world. It goes
without saying, we’d love to see
our fellow Sarries fans too!!
Just a reminder for all visitors,
though:
We will be at the gazebo only
until 30 minutes before kick-off
and no later: it’s important
to remember that the SSA
Matchday Team is staffed
entirely by volunteers who are
fans like everyone else so we
also need time to charge our
glasses, meet up with friends,
get to our seats or favourite
standing spot, and greet the
players as they run out from
the tunnel, so if you do have any
membership, ticketing or badge
queries please come and see us
in good time..
ABOUT THE SSA…
If you do come to see us at
the gazebo and you are not
an SSA member, why not join?
Membership is £10/season or
£5 for juniors. In addition to
social events and organising
ticket allocations for away
events, we arrange meet ups
at away games and we have
our monthly newsletter with all
sorts of interesting articles!
We also have an SSA
representative on the Club’s
Supporters’ Forum, Nigel
Eaton. Members with points to
raise can contact him via email
at committee.ssa@outlook.com
LOOK BACK IN TIME
THE 2008 SIX NATIONS
As rugby in the northern
hemisphere gears up for its
annual rugby extravaganza,
the 2024 Guinness Six
Nations, England will be led
into the tournament by our
very own Jamie George. It
is the ultimate honour for a
player who has already won
everything with his club, 85
caps for his country, including
a World Cup final, and two
tours with the British & Irish
Lions.
But who was the first player
from Saracens to captain
England? That honour goes
to former No 8 Tony Diprose
way back in 1998. But the
first man to captain England
into the Five or Six Nations
from the club was the man
who just appointed George
as his captain, England head
coach Steve Borthwick.
Borthwick captained England
21 times, although when he
led his side out against Italy
in February 2008 he was
still a Bath player. He then
joined Saracens that summer,
when he led England on tour
to New Zealand. Technically,
his first Six Nations game
in charge of England as a
Saracens player was against
Italy in 2009. George will also
lead out England for the first
time against the Italians next
weekend.
George takes over from
his clubmate Owen Farrell
after the decision by the
latter to step down from the
international arena after
winning 112 caps for his
country between 2012-23. He
was captain on 48 occasions
and will no doubt have passed
on any necessary tips to his
successor.
It is an honour that George
was delighted to accept
and, as he told the Daily
Telegraph recently, he aims to
improve the recent win-ratio
at Twickenham. Since the
start of the 2021-22 season it
stands at 50%.
“I think the record speaks for
itself – it’s not good enough.
An England team at home
should not lose. Twickenham
should be a horrible place to
come and play,” said George.
“I think there are many
factors that go into that. I
look at what Quins are doing
with their ‘Big Game’ in terms
of making things a spectacle
and involving the crowd in
ENGLAND CAPTAINS FROM SARACENS
39
that respect. I think there
are lessons to be learned
there. Likewise, what we at
Saracens do for our big game
at the Tottenham Hotspur
stadium.
“As players we’ve got some
work to do because we want
people out of their seats. I
think that happens in the
way that we play, how much
pride we show, how physical
we are and how much it
means to us.
“Sitting down with Steve
(Borthwick) and listening
to him talk about making
Twickenham a fortress again
and bringing the fans with
us is stuff that I can connect
with massively. And that’s
something that is really at
the forefront of my mind.
“Every time I play for England,
if we do lose, I feel like we let
the fans down.”
George has never been one to
let down fans at the StoneX
Stadium with his all-action
approach and if succeeds
in his bid to reconnect the
England rugby fans with
their national team then he
will make Twickenham a very
difficult and hostile place for
teams to play at.
Wales and Ireland you have
been warned!

THE INTERVIEW
HUGH
TIZARD
THERE IS A DATE IN HUGH
TIZARD’S DIARY THAT NOT
ONLY HAS ONE RED CIRCLE
AROUND THE DAY, BUT TWO!
IT IS SATURDAY, 23 MARCH
– ‘SHOWDOWN 4’ AT THE
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM.

It’s not just that it is a big
London derby match, or
another chance for the
‘Men in Black’. For the 6ft
5in, 120kg lock it is far more
personal than that.
The 23-year old former
England U20 giant came
through the ranks at the
Quins before opting to switch
to Saracens 18 months ago.
His competitive debut for
Sarries was against his old
teammates – and he loved it,
helping his new side to a 30-
276 victory.
By the end of the season he
had also played in his first
Premiership Final, helping
Saracens to beat Sale
Sharks at Twickenham. Not
a bad way to end your first
campaign at a new club!
Having cited the desire to get
closer to Maro Itoje as one
of the main reasons behind
his switch to Saracens,
‘Showdown4’ should give
him the chance to measure
his development against one
of his first rugby heroes, Joe
Launchbury.
THE SWITCH
TO SARACENS
WAS ALL
ABOUT
GETTING
CLOSER TO
MARO ITOJE TO
TRY TO LEARN
FROM HIM
AND FURTHER
DEVELOP MY
GAME.
England lock. If they do come
face to face at the Tottenham
Hotspur Stadium in March
then it will give the rising
Sarries star the chance to
measure his progress against
a past master of second row
play.
“There are always a lot of
WattsApp messages flying
back and forth before a game
against Quins. It’s great
banter and it is probably
the hardest game to play,”
admitted Tizard.
“I had a great grounding
at Quins, but the switch
to Saracens was all about
getting closer to Maro Itoje
to try to learn from him and
further develop my game. I’ve
had a great 18 months at the
club and just want to keep on
getting better.
“You saw last weekend
against Lyon just how good
Maro is. There is no second
row like him in the world
game and his influence on
the game in so many areas is
massive.
“He is everywhere and
gets involved in everything.
Beating Lyon was a massive
step forward from the
previous week in Bordeaux
and proved we are able to
react to adversity.”
That’s certainly going to be
top of the agenda once again
today as Saracens seek to

43
get even with Exeter Chiefs
after their record beating at
Sandy Park on the opening
day of the season. The 65-10
defeat has definitely been
the elephant in the room at
training this week, with the
unspoken goal to more than
get even.
Tizard was bed ridden at the
time and missed that game.
Even so, he flet the hurt and
has spent the remainder
of the season trying to get
greater consistency into his
game.
With the England Six Nations
squad members unavailable
this weekend, it is time for the
likes of Tizard to step up and
fill the massive gap left by the
loss of Itoje and Nick Isiekwe.
“It is time for some of us to
step up in the big games and
against the big teams. This
weekend is not just about
fighting for points in the
league table against Chiefs,
it’s about making amends,”
added Tizard.
“We had a successful period
last year during the Six
Nations when the top layers
were away, and we want
the same again this season.
They will all be back for the
‘Showdown’ but it’s our job
in the meantime to keep
standards high.
“I feel that since I’ve been
at Saracens my game has
become far more complete
and my set piece work has
become much better and is
becoming a strong part of
my game. Now it is all about
becoming more consistent.”

DELIVERY
For the last 8 weeks, Saracens Foundation have
been working with ‘The Wolfpack’ ay HMPYOI
Feltham. The participants chose this name
themselves as, like wolves, they were hunting for
new opportunities for a brighter future, and like a
pack of wolves, they are supporting each other on
their respective journey.
The 8-week course saw them challenge themselves
facing workshops that provoked discussions on
mental wellbeing, leadership skills and ‘owning
your story’ in a job interview. For the first time in
Week 5, the group played a mid-course adapted
contact match against a Barbarians side of Prison
Officers, Chobham, Staines and Feltham RFC which
was a huge success and really helped to bring the
team together and build a sense of camaraderie
amongst the group.
However, Let’s face it, if Mako Vinipola told you what to do on a building site, you’d do it.

It may be Film Awards
the action on the field is more
than worthy of an Oscar on
MARLIE
PACKER
IT WASN’T
THE RESULT
SARACENS
WOMEN
WANTED ON
SATURDAY, AS
THEY SUFFERED
A FIRST LEAGUE
DEFEAT OF
THE SEASON
AGAINST
GLOUCESTER-
HARTPURY AT
KINGSHOLM.
62

63
On a bitterly cold afternoon,
the defending champions
were clinical when it
counted and stifled the
Sarries defence, to leave
Marlie Packer’s side without
anything to show for their
efforts.
Having won all previous
matches in the league up until
this point, Packer insisted
that her side will learn from
the defeat, heading into the
second half of the season.
“There’s a lot of
disappointment but we need
to look at ourselves. There
are still positives to take, and
we’re going to grow and learn
from this.”
Saracens did manage to right
the wrongs of conceding
late in the match against
Gloucester-Hartpury, even
finishing with the final try
themselves, as Coreen Grant
raced over out wide, but
inaccuracy with ball in hand
ultimately cost the side.
Packer admitted as much
too, explaining that her side
didn’t make the most of their
chances.
“We talked about the fact
that we let Exeter in for
the last play at StoneX. We
wanted to be better this
week and this time; it was us
scoring in the last play. We
took the learnings from the
last match into this one, but
the issue was that we didn’t
execute enough in the red
zone.”
Despite the obvious
disappointment of the
defeat, Packer still believes
that her side will take a lot
from a physical encounter, as
she wryly mused that leagues
aren’t won at this early stage
of the season.
“There were so many times
that we got into their 22,
but we just weren’t clinical
enough. That will be a
massive learning experience
for us. League titles aren’t
won at this point in the
season, but you always want
to take care of business as
early as you can.”
After an away semi-final
defeat to Exeter last
season, Packer was bullish
in explaining that her side
wanted to secure a home tie
this season in the play-offs.
With plenty of the season
still to go, they are still on
course to do that, with Packer
reinforcing the need to learn
heading into the second part
of the season.
“We want a home semi-final
and we’re honest about that.
The main thing for us is the
amount of learning we can
take from this into the rest of
the season.”

EVERY WEEK WE WILL BE HIGHLIGHTING ONE OF
OUR AMAZING PIONEERS WHO ADD SO MUCH TO
OUR STONEX STADIUM MATCHDAYS! NEXT UP IT’S
NICOLE ANDREWS…
PIONEERS
1) Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m originally from Sunderland
and I’ve lived in London since
2012. I’ve worked in banking
for most of my career and
I now run my own business
helping organisations
communicate with their staff
and customers in times of
change. I love live sport and
music and have also worked
as a crowd marshall at
Glastonbury Festival.
2) When did you get involved
with the programme?
I joined in summer 2022 so
this is my second season on
the programme.
3) What do you do on
matchday?
I’m part of the volunteer
support team so I help out
with admin like registration
at the start of the day, and
then I cover any gaps that
need filling during the shift.
So I can end up on the gates,
meet-and-greet, on a stand
or a combination depending
on what’s needed - no two
shifts are the same!
4) What makes the Pioneer
Programme special for you?
68
For me, it’s definitely the
ethos of the programme.
It’s a brilliant community
to be part of and that
translates when you’re on
shift and speaking to fans
around the ground. People
are so receptive and always
thank you for your help if they
need it, it’s great to be able
to make such a difference to
someone’s visit.
5) What are your best three
memories?
1. My introduction to live
rugby early in the season in
2022 when Sarries produced
some amazing comebacks,
including my first game vs
Gloucester as well as vs
Northampton a few weeks
later.
2. England women vs Canada
in September: it was a real
occasion and the Canadian
fans were all so friendly.
3. My first shift scanning
tickets for the fireworks event
in November - it was very
busy but a lot of fun!

MAVERICKS
HAVING COME
BACK INTO
THE FOLD FOR
ENGLAND AFTER
SEVERAL YEARS OF
SERIOUS INJURIES,
DEFENSIVE
STAR RAZIA
QUASHIE MADE
AN IMMEDIATE
IMPACT LAST
WEEKEND IN HER
SIDE’S FIRST TWO
INTERNATIONAL
TESTS AGAINST
UGANDA AND
AUSTRALIA AT
OVO ARENA
WEMBLEY.
70
Reflecting on coming back
into the side, Quashie
admitted that it had been
a hard journey back to the
top level, after two serious
injuries.
“It’s been amazing. I’ve had
one of the hardest journey’s
I could have had in the last
three years. I’ve attacked
this series with everything
I’ve got and taken it all in my
stride. I’m grateful for the
opportunity to come back
and be part of the team.”
She has already formed
a strong international
connection with Fran
Williams, with Quashie
explaining that playing
together in their childhood
had helped the pair find a
synergy on court.
“Fran and I have been playing
together since we were kids
and we’ve been working
together throughout being
part of the England setup.
The connection is a solid
one and we’ve built that link
between the two of us as the
years have gone by.”
England secured victory over
Uganda, before a narrow
defeat to Australia a day
later. Whilst Quashie was
disappointed with the result
against the Aussies, she
was thrilled with her own
performance level, having felt
she hadn’t been quite at her
best against Uganada.
“I feel great personally. I
was disappointed in my
performance against Uganda.
That wasn’t the real me on

71
I LIKE TO BE REWARDED FOR THE WORK WE
DO IN DEFENCE. TO SEE US SCORE FROM
THE INTERCEPT WAS BRILLIANT.
court, but I feel like against
Australia I worked hard and
showed what I could do. I
wanted to show what I was
capable of. Yes, we could
have gone on and won that
match, but for me, I’m really
happy with how I performed
and with how we pushed to
try and get that result. I like
to be rewarded for the work
we do in defence. To see us
score from the intercept was
brilliant.”
Reflecting on her comeback
from injury, Quashie explained
that her second serious injury
had taken a lot out of her,
highlighting the need to set
targets and goals to get back
to the top level.
“I came back quickly from the
first injury, but the second
time I did my achilles, it took
me 11 months. I didn’t want
to stay down, I wanted to
come back, set my goals and
go onwards, which I’ve done.
Now, it’s about keeping fit
and being my best self on
court.”
With more internationals to
come this weekend, before
a return to Mavs colours at
HSV, Quashie has certainly
laid down a marker that she’s
going to be a key player again
this season for Mavericks.

HIGH SCHOOL
SARACENS
HIGH SCHOOL IS
NOT A SPORTS
ACADEMY. THAT
DOESN’T MEAN
SPORT HERE IS
THE SAME AS
IN EVERY OTHER
NON-SELECTIVE
SCHOOL. AFTER
ALL, THIS SCHOOL
IS A MEMBER OF
THE SARACENS
FAMILY.
72
At first glance, PE lessons
look much like they do in
every other non-selective free
school. On second glance,
one of the PE teachers is Vice
Principal Sonia Green (aka
Sonic), a current Saracens
Women’s player with a record
breaking 330 caps for the
club she is devoted to.
There are Houses named
after Saracens legends
(Alphonsi and Hill) and signed
boots, shirts and netball
dresses on the walls. The
gargantuan Premiership
trophy has even been on
display in the assembly hall.
However, it is the times
players visit the school that
are most impactful.
Players from all of the teams
speaking to pupils gives such
a boost to the children’s selfesteem
and ambition while
being an expression of the
meaningful relationship the
school enjoys with the club.
This relationship is also to
thank for a full-throttle
introduction to an inclusive
sport by Saracens Wheelchair
Rugby Club and for access to
coaching from Mavericks at
a community day held on the
school courts.
The Vice Principal
is Saracens recordbreaker,
Sonic
Players from all of the Saracens
teams visit the school
Supporting ‘our teams’ at
StoneX

73
Pupils speaking to Saracens’
England stars at StoneX
It is a privilege to watch the
rugby teams play at StoneX
and last year pupils were even
invited to watch England
Women train before they
played Canada.
Surely all of the above
increases participation in the
diverse sports clubs on offer
during and after school. The
netball club, for example, has
sky-rocketed in popularity
with a 300% increase in
attendance. Sports Prefects
support positive play at break
times and help facilitate
increased participation.
As well as the traditional
sports pupils can use the
gym or try cheerleading,
boxing and trampolining. The
outdoor table tennis tables
are in constant use as are the
newly added table football
tables.
Table Football, or Foosball, is
a popular club that has been
introduced by Maths teacher
Mr Hawkes, himself an
international table football
player!
The values shared with the
club underpin the sports
teams - as they do all areas
of school life - and it has
been wonderful to see
discipline, hard work and
honesty leading to successes
celebrated with humility.
Last season both girls’
football teams came out
top in Barnet and Year 7
won the netball league. A
particular highlight before
Christmas was the football
team winning a 10-team
tournament with special
guests, Arsenal Under 21s. The
basketball teams have also
been going from strength to
strength.
The girls’ football teams are
top in Barnet
Being sporty isn’t an entry
requirement to Saracens High
School. But an interest in
sport is an ‘exit inevitability’
after meeting professional
sports men and women,
watching sport played at the
HIGH SCHOOL
