Dean’s Message
Welcome to Business Connected Winter 2024
Brrrrr. With the end of the winter solstice, two
things are certain: first, with each passing day,
we will gain 3 more minutes of most welcome
daylight in southern Ontario. Second, our
amazing TBS team will continue to deliver
incredible industry-relevant experiences to our
students, as they did in the Fall of 2023.
This edition of Business Connected looks back
on the fall term, reflecting on the richness of
learning that took place, new arrivals to our
school, faculty awards and recognitions, and
sadly, the passing of some familiar faces around
our school.
It bears repeating that indigenization, particularly
our collective response in TBS, aligns with
Section 92(ii) of the TRC: "Ensure that Aboriginal
peoples have equitable access to jobs, training,
and education opportunities in the corporate
sector, and that Aboriginal communities gain
long-term sustainable benefits from economic
development projects." As such, it is fitting that
the cover of this issue highlights staff and student
attendance at the 2023 Indigenomics Conference
in downtown Toronto. This conference celebrated
milestones of Indigenous economic success and
opened a dialogue on strategies to promote
economic growth and new business development
in Indigenous communities. A big shout-out to the
students and professors who demonstrated their
commitment to reconciliation and learning by
attending this 2-day event.
Inside this issue, you will also find highlights of
an outing led by myself to the LCBO main
logistics facility in Whitby. On this trip, I was
accompanied by a logistics college partner from
China (LNCC) and our very own Supply Chain
and Logistics Students and Faculty. This
opportunity to visit one of the world's largest
automated beverage alcohol warehousing
facilities was amazing and a rare opportunity (the
warehouse is usually closed to visitors).
I want to close on a note of recognition and
celebration. The Business School has been on a
bit of a roll in terms of our successes lately. We
are stacking them up left and right! Not only are
we now the largest School, but we have, of late,
been regularly recognized as having some of the
best professors in the business (Shhh… we
always knew that). In 2021, Professor Scott
Tanaka won the prestigious Wicken Award, and
now, on his heels, we offer congratulations to
Rathika Sitsabaiesan, who received the 2023
Wicken Award for Teaching Excellence.
Thank you all for what you do. This publication is
packed with smiling faces, positive data
supporting student success, and best of all, our
team having fun together along the way. It's a
pleasure and an honor to be along for the ride.
Celebrating Student Success
Student of International Trade
Award Recipient: Oluwayomi Dime
Global Business Management student Oluwayomi (Yomi)
Dime (centre photo), was the recipient of the Student of
International Trade Award of the Organization of Women in
International Trade (OWIT) – Toronto. This award recognizes a
female student or recent graduate who has demonstrated passion
and commitment for a career in international trade. Oluwayomi just
finished her third semester and has been actively engaged as a
student, participating in Enactus and volunteering as a Student
Mentor while also engaging with the local trade community to gain
industry experience. Congrats to Yomi on this achievement!
Business Analytics students collaborate with SAS and
Toronto Police to win contest
Ateam of Business Analytics students from The Business School, supported by their professor David Parent, were
the winners of SAS Safe Roads, a contest in collaboration with SAS Institute and Toronto Police Services that
focused on harnessing data analytics for enhancing law enforcement efforts.
The competition provided the students with an incredible platform where they could apply the skills and knowledge they
gained throughout their academic journey. The students’ project aimed to develop predictive models that could help the
Toronto Police Department allocate resources more effectively in areas prone to collisions.
Using tools like Python, SAS, SQL, and Tableau, they analyzed complex datasets related to traffic trends, resource
allocation, and community engagement strategies. By leveraging data from various sources, including historical data,
socioeconomic indicators, and geographical information, the students created insightful visualizations and actionable
insights that could potentially lead to more informed decision-making within the police force.
The Business School students’ collaboration with SAS
Institute and the Toronto Police was truly inspiring as they
were able to work alongside experienced professionals who
shared a common goal of leveraging analytics for the
betterment of the community. Winning the contest highlights
their dedication to the field of business analytics and
underscores the value of applying these skills in real-world
scenarios. Congratulations to team members Rakeen
Ahmed, Darren Carvallho, Jagjeet Singh, and Faiza Zahin.
Special thank you to Jagjeet Singh for sharing all the details and to Faiza
Indigenomics on Bay Street Conference 2023
In November 2023, The Indigenomic Institute presented the Indigenomics on Bay Street Conference at the Westin
Harbour Castle, Toronto. Seven students, along with their respective professors from The Business School, had the
opportunity to be a part of this significant and prestigious 2-day event. Special thank you to students Sohini Ghosh,
Teresa Jimenez Guitton and Camila Cardona for their reflections included below and to fellow students Victor Chima
Ordu, Meriza Garcia, Fatimah Ogunbunmi, Shraddha Tendulkar who took part. Thank you as well to our professors
Hanika Bhojwani-Chen, Tulsi Dharel, Jarret Leaman, Geoffrey Prince, Rathika Sitsabaiesan, and Lucas Thung
who joined in this learning journey.
To start with, who are indigenous people of
Canada? How do they effect the economy?
The history of Indigenous people in Canada is rich, and diverse, and
spans thousands of years. Indigenous peoples in Canada are
comprised of three main groups: First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. Each
group has its own distinct cultures, languages, and histories. The
concept of indigenomics emerged in response to economic disparities
faced by Indigenous communities. It emphasizes Indigenous-led
economic development, sustainable practices, and community
empowerment. Indigenomics involves fostering Indigenous
entrepreneurship, supporting businesses, and challenging traditional
economic models that may not be inclusive of Indigenous
perspectives.
Indigenomics conferences and initiatives have become important
forums for discussing economic empowerment, advocating for
Indigenous rights, and creating opportunities for Indigenous
businesses. These efforts align with broader movements for
reconciliation, acknowledging historical injustices, and promoting a
more equitable and inclusive future for Indigenous peoples in Canada.
What is the motive behind these
conferences?
The primary aim of the event was to translate ideas and tools into
tangible strategies for fostering growth within the Indigenous economy.
It provided a valuable forum for companies to showcase their efforts in
promoting respect and narrowing the existing gap. The necessity to fill
the gap in Indigenous references, especially to mentor and motivate
the next generation of Indigenous people, has been designated as one
of the top priorities. In addition, it became clear that improving access
to high-quality education and other services was a critical issue that
needed to be addressed.
7 | BUSINESS CONNECTED WINTER 2024

Their strategy is based on the idea that resolving disputes and
integrating Indigenous populations may be done from both sides'
points of view. This emphasizes a dedication to shared gain rather
than exploiting resources for personal gain. Essentially, these
businesses are coordinating their tactics with a more comprehensive
understanding of sustainable development that emphasizes mutual
respect, collaboration, and shared wealth with Indigenous people.
What did we learn from the conference?
From the Indigenomics conference, we can take away valuable
insights into Indigenous-led economic development, sustainable
practices, and the challenges faced by Indigenous communities. These
events provide a platform for networking, fostering collaborations, and
showcasing successful business models. Attendees gain practical
skills through workshops, and cultural elements underscore the
importance of preserving Indigenous traditions in economic initiatives.
Overall, the conferences contribute to a collective commitment to
fostering inclusive, culturally respectful, and sustainable economic
practices within Indigenous communities.
What did we bring back home with us?
Encouraging people to learn more about Indigenous communities and
Indigenomics requires fostering awareness and appreciation for their
rich cultures and economic endeavors. Engaging in open dialogue,
sharing educational resources, and promoting events such as
Indigenomics conferences can serve as effective ways to inform and
inspire. Highlighting the importance of Indigenous perspectives in
economic development, acknowledging historical injustices, and
emphasizing the resilience and innovation within Indigenous
communities can contribute to a broader understanding. By fostering
curiosity, respect, and a commitment to learning, we can collectively
work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society that
values and supports the unique contributions of Indigenous peoples.
Reflection by: Sohini Ghosh and Teresa Jimenez Guitton
Students, The Business School
“The Indigenomics conference was an opportunity to learn the history
of the Indigenous community and how after a long journey of hard
work and self-determination they are trying to bring their heritage to
the Canadian market; through economic reconciliation that highlights
value creation and focuses on understanding the background and history
to elevate communication, create collective economic response and
economic inclusion.
From my experience this conference brought out a new perspective of
putting into practice what we have learned in school and the impact that it
creates in society; we actually got to see economists’ perspectives in the
market, the supply and demand relationship in the indigenous
transformation and economic reconciliation. It was very interesting to see
the concepts come to life. It gave us the opportunity to get a small insight
into the business world, especially in the Canadian market.
I honestly believe that these two days made a huge
impact on my career path because I got to learn the
history of the indigenous community, acknowledge their
values and potential; specially me as an outsider, as an
international student who is learning all of these from
zero, it makes a huge difference in how we perceive
business culture and how we as society can
implement these principles of capacity building,
modern financial pathways, evolving landscape and
collaborative engagement into the creation of
projects and businesses.
Reflection by: Camila Cardona
Student, Business Diploma
The conference provided valuable resources to
those in attendance, including the publicly
available case studies list below. Thank you to
Professor Hanika Bhojwani-Chen for sharing.
are publicly available:
challenges and overcoming one's own
weaknesses and channelling them into
strengths. One point shared by Emilia that an
investment banker learned a pressure management
skill while serving sandwiches in Subway gave me
an insight into my own life. I also have been working
a blue-collar job since my arrival in Canada and
aspire to venture into banking. This gives me
motivation to learn and grow in every aspect of life.”
post grad programs gathered in room L1-02, Progress
Campus, for a “pizza” information session on November 7,
“I had a wonderful experience at the HRPA
Student Presentation. It was a first of its kind
for me and truly an eye-opener. The facilitator
from HRPA demonstrated excellent illustrations and
had a remarkable presence. My only regret was not
staying after the lecture for a one-on-one chat.”
Logistics - Freight Forwarding - Job Options,
Opportunities, and Obstacles event
On November 6, 2023, students took part in the Logistics -
President and Co-owner (respectively) of MELLOHAWK Logistics,
who discussed the Three O's (Options, Opportunities, and
Obstacles) to getting a job in International Trade, Supply Chain and
Logistics. The Options are identifying careers and industries related
to logistics. Opportunities are understanding what is happening in
global business and how this can help you. Finally, the Obstacles
(both spoken and unspoken) that prevent you from getting a job you
are going for. In addition, this year we welcomed Mauricio Zani
who shared their industry experiences and updates on cargo
insurance. Mauricio is an executive underwriter with 13 years of
• Sameer Lal, In November 2023, we welcomed Mr. Sameer Lal, Associate
Director of Operational Risk at RBC. Beyond his corporate role, he is a
best-selling author, mentor, engaging speaker, and a dedicated community
champion. Serving as a Governor at the University of Toronto's Governing
Council, he holds a pivotal role in academia. Recognized with the RBC
Special Mention: Chair Brian Atkinson visited
Professor Robert Walman’s Business
Fundamental class this past summer. The topic
was Unions and Robert had worked on a
contract with the Toronto Fire Department so he
brought in a prop!
Thank you to all our guest speakers and also to Professors Dr.
Vida Shehada, Melissa Jimeno, Naila Aaijaz, and Robert
Walman for your help in organizing the speakers mentioned here.
at The Business School. Both experts, with diverse HRM
backgrounds, shared valuable insights, guiding students
through career options and industry intricacies. The interactive
session delved into the latest trends in Talent Management and
HRM, transforming theoretical concepts into a vibrant, realworld
experience. Kudos to event organizers Kayla Clark and
Thelma Payes for their seamless execution (and did we
mention there was cake?). The 70 engaged students made the
event a success, proving that HR can indeed be exciting!
Making HR Exciting! In-Class Guest Speakers
In today's dynamic job market, the significance of industryacademic
collaboration cannot be overstated. In November
2023, students from the Postgraduate Human Resources
Certificate program, taught by Professor Mila Romaniuk, had a
unique opportunity to host two HR professionals—Miriam
Ibrahim, AVP, Strategic Talent Management at Centennial
College, and Brian Atkinson, Chair, Business & Management
“The session proved to be incredibly
insightful, offering valuable lessons on the
practical aspects of staffing. More
importantly, their speeches provided profound
guidance for our future journey as HR and
staffing professionals. Thank you for organizing
such an enriching academic session.”
Experiential Learning
Fashion Business and Management
students are building Shopify
websites for Canadian Fashion
Designers
The Business School’s Fashion Business and
Management (FBMT) program partnered with
the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) this fall.
Students spent the semester working with TFI
members, Kendrick Tran, Leela Jacobs, and Elisa
Gentile. Students in their FBMT 307 eCommerce
Platforms course developed custom Shopify websites
for each designer. Students were tasked to build
websites that reflected the designer’s brand, are
optimized for SEO and enabled Google Analytics
capabilities.
This partnership gave students the opportunity to learn
both hard and soft skills. The hard skills students
developed were web development and web
architecture frameworks, editing content, database
management, data visualization, search engine
optimization, Google analytics, photo editing and
project management. Working directly with a client
gave students the opportunity to learn soft skills such
as empathy, professionalism, patience, time
management, adaptability and clear communication.
On December 5, 2023, students presented their ideas
to a panel which included: Susan Langdon from TFI,
Anna Care from Mejuri, Janet Ellis from Louis
Vuitton, Colette Liburd from The Clarendon Trading
Co., Designer Kendrick Tran, Dean, Barry O’Brien,
and Academic Chair, Steven Khan.
Fashion Business and Management
partners with STC
This Fall 2023, our Fashion Business and
Management (FBMT) student had the unique
opportunity to pitch innovative programming
initiatives to engage Scarborough Town Centre (STC)
visitors. With the Scarborough Rapid Transit officially
decommissioned students were tasked with
developing strategies to encourage and excite people
to come to the Centre. Students spent the first part of
the semester conducting primary and secondary
market research. Using their research, they identified a
new market opportunity they felt would drive traffic to
the Scarborough Town Centre.
Ideas incorporated multiple retail trends such as live
selling, retailtainment, gamification, and health &
wellness. The winning team presented an idea to bring
claw machines (regular units and a human claw) to
STC and work with retailers to offer branded prizes.

Teaching, Learning & Scholarship
This idea was based on extensive
research around retailtainment and the
increase in global popularity of claw
machines.
Students presented their ideas on
December 7, 2023, to a panel, which
included Marketing Manager from STC,
Rachael Tang, TBS Dean, Barry O’Brien,
and Academic Chair, Steven Khan.
Congratulation goes out to the winning
proposal, Carys Ho, Dixon Ho, Samuel
Hechanova and Carina Wu of Clawmania!
Mock Trial in Session
Congrats
GROUP 3
Ahighlight of the final semester of the paralegal program is the mock trial.
Students taking the Advocacy course are divided into teams representing
either the Crown or the Defense. They are given a fact situation involving
criminal charges being brought against a student. Paralegal students then
prepare all the court filings and conduct a trial, with students performing roles of
counsel, witnesses and the defendant. The trial takes place in a court room
setting and is presided over by faculty and the department chair. Students agree
that it is difficult and nerve-wracking, but one of the best experiences of their
academic career. Congratulations to all the students who successfully completed
this capstone project.
The Ultimate Case Competition
Centennial’s Business and Marketing students were invited to
"Turn Theories into Solutions" at The Ultimate Case
Competition. This event challenged participants to apply
classroom knowledge to real-world business scenarios. Teams were
composed of 3-4 members, where they were given the opportunity to
leverage their diverse skills to address a practical case study,
enhancing their collaborative and problem-solving abilities with mentor
support from Professors Hubert Rau, Saeb Al Ganideh, Yvette Byrne
and Toussaint Xavier.
Teams were given one week to submit their final solutions. The teams'
solutions and strategies were evaluated by a panel of judges who
determined the ultimate winner of the competition.
Congratulation to the winning group including Mikhail Joshua Regala,
Suchansinee Jongpermwattanapol and Ngoc Phuong Dung Pham.
And special thank you to our judge panel of industry professionals:
Experiential Opportunities
At The Business School, learning extends off campus,
providing students with opportunities to see real-world
examples of what they are learning in class. Students took
part in some offsite visits, including: Supply Chain & Logistics
students at LCBO’s primary distribution centre, Fashion
Business & Management students at Roopa Knitting/ Canadian
Textile Services and our Data Analytics students at Zulu Alpha
Kilo (ZAK) agency. Thank you to our faculty who bring these
valuable opportunities to our students.
Zulu Alpha Kilo (ZAK) Class Visit
On August 11, 2023, Centennial's BUSN 734, Canadian Business Environment visited Zulu Alpha
Kilo (ZAK), one of Canada's most successful independent ad agencies. Built from scratch by
Scarborough native Zak Mroueh, ZAK grew from a small to full-service agency with offices in
Toronto, Vancouver and New York. As a post grad program in Centennial's Data Analytics
program in TBS' marketing cluster, BUSN 734 explores Canadian trends, theories and practices
used by companies, governments and other stakeholders. During the ZAK visit, Chief Marketing
Officer Christine McNab provided a comprehensive overview of the globally awarded creative for
brands including Bell, Harley Davidson and Interac. In addition, Christine answered questions
about the mechanics of the business and how the unique ZAK approach has led to industry
leadership. Thank you to Professor Sandy Di Felice for organizing this visit.
$4,500
Fundraising success in support of
Action Against Hunger
In December 2023, The Business School’s
Corporate Sustainability students launched a 2-
week fundraising campaign in support of Action
Against Hunger Canada, in an effort to eliminate
hunger and malnutrition in South Sudan. The
campaign raised funds that will go towards providing
children suffering from hunger and malnutrition their
basic food and nutrition needs. Through this
campaign, our students raised $4,500 and generated
approximately 20,000 impressions. A big congrats to
our students and thank you to Professor Natalie
Chinsam for her support in this campaign.
Illuminating Success in International Development
- A Transformative Journey
Angela Itchon - Centennial Alumni, International Development
Angela Itchon's journey is a testament to the power of
passion, dedication, and excellence in international
development. Graduating with high honors from
Centennial College's International Development Post Graduate
Certificate program, Angela's story speaks of resilience,
commitment, and the transformative impact of education and
hands-on experience.
Hailing from the Philippines, Angela began her educational
journey at Centennial College in January 2022, diving into a
curriculum aimed at equipping students with skills to effect
global change. Her path was marked by not just coursework but
also volunteering for causes close to her heart—environmental
advocacy, gender equality, and education in her home province
of Ilocos Sur. She extended her impact to Canada, volunteering
for Cuso International, renowned for long-term development
projects.
Angela's quest for learning extended further through a Co-op
Placement at Good Neighbors Canada. Here, she excelled in
the Goods4Causes program, fostering financial inclusion among
marginalized communities. Her exceptional dedication during a
three-month internship as a Social Enterprise Assistant led to
her employment as a Social Enterprise Officer, driving the
program's social objectives forward.
Recognized for her impactful work, Angela was featured on
CityNews, shedding light on the influence of local charity
initiatives on global artisans. Her expertise was further
acknowledged as she was invited as a panelist to the City of
Toronto's Small Business Forum 2023 at the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre, solidifying her influence in social enterprise
and international development.
Angela's journey, from an international student to a catalyst for
positive change, embodies the transformative power of
education, dedication, and unwavering aspirations. Her story
reflects Centennial College's commitment to nurturing global
leaders driven not only by knowledge but also the passion to
create a better world.
Marketing Corporate Account Management
After completing my degree,
having a clear sense of
purpose was crucial in guiding
my entry into the Canadian
job market. I focused on
refining my LinkedIn profile
and searching for roles
aligning with my skills and
values, aiming beyond just "a"
job to find.
Research consumed most of my time—I revamped my
CV to Canadian standards and utilized AI to help me
identify key "Account Manager" keywords. Interview
preparation was paramount, involving thorough
company research and role-playing standard
questions.
Centennial chosen as a GTA Top Employer for
third consecutive year!
For the third year in a row, Centennial College has been
selected as one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers for
2024. The announcement was made at a gala event at the
Park Hyatt Hotel on December 5, 2023, and was accompanied by
a beautifully illustrated magazine that was distributed with the
Globe and Mail.
Cheers to everyone who helps make
Centennial such an amazing place to
work! Congrats, Centennial! (Excerpt
above from College Central, posted
December 6, 2023)
Centennial's emphasis on written assignments, oral
presentations, and self-discovery during the "findingyour-purpose"
segment of the program was
instrumental as a non-native English speaker. It
prepared me for a successful job search in Canada.
Centennial has also equipped me with invaluable
tools, including the Big Interview simulation, not to
mention the content of the
program itself! The Customer
Experience, Negotiation, and
Digital Marketing courses
were very aligned with
market demands!
Things you may not know about me
When I first moved to Canada, the intention was to
make the tough decision to part with my career as
commitment to significantly contribute towards
shaping the minds and experiences of students
have only grown exponentially.
Professor, Insurance Management
What I do
I am a full-time professor in The Business School,
I joined Centennial College in August 2023 after a
career change to channel my insurance industry
experience and knowledge to support the career
aspirations of the next generation of insurance
talent.
Before I joined Centennial
I spent over 30 years in the insurance industry.
My focus has always been on the Property &
claims and underwriting; I then found my place in
Sales and Marketing collaborating with the
independent insurance broker network to deliver
both personal and commercial insurance solutions.
Prior to joining the team at Centennial College, my
management role, delivering loss control and risk
Things you may not know about me
I love the challenge of building and fixing things.
NEW TBS Profiles
Andrew Ko
Professor, Digital Engagement Strategy
What I do
I am a professor that teaches both digital
marketing and entrepreneurship courses at The
Business School. I like to bring my extensive
experiences in advertising & marketing technology
and start-ups into my classroom so the students
can connect their learnings to what’s happening
out in the real world.
Before I joined Centennial
I was living in the UK helping run and mentor startups
(my own included, called Personalyze). I’ve
dabbled in various technology ideas and bringing
them to market including a unique musical ad
format that was 3x more effective than Facebook’s
sponsored posts and building the world’s most
powerful profiling technology used to make social
targeting more effective.
Things you may not know about me
I lived in the United Kingdom (Manchester
specifically) for 13 years before repatriating myself
to Canada in December 2022. I was there to study
my PhD at the Alliance Manchester Business
School and work on my various business ideas. I
also got to travel up and down the country
speaking at entrepreneurship events, representing
the North of England.
My interests outside of work
Thinking about different start-up ideas and how to
bring them to reality. Listening to music and
reading up on world news, politics, and sports.
Spending time with my boys (17 and 13) and
rediscovering what life is like living in Toronto
again after a lengthy absence.
UDL Workshop with Accessibility and
Accommodations Changemaker Scott Tanaka
In October 2023, faculty took part in the Universal Design for
Learning (UDL) Workshop with Accessibility and Accommodations
Changemaker Scott Tanaka. This workshop was focused on
Executive Functions (CAST Guideline 6), providing UDL tips and
strategies. Meeting materials (slides, worksheet) and recording are
available on The Business School’s Faculty & Staff eCentennial
portal HERE.
The Accessibility and Accommodations
Changemakers are working to promote the
principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
in each School at Centennial. For this academic
year, Professor Scott Tanaka will serve as The
Business School’s Changemaker. One aspect of
this position is working directly with faculty to improve
our students’ learning experiences. Please do not hesitate to reach
out if you have any UDL questions or require further support.
UDL Tips for your course
If you’ve taught a course more than once, you’ve likely
noticed similar challenges.
Ask yourself:
• What do you emphasize because you know it will
appear on a test?
• When do instructions for assignments or test
questions create confusion?
• Where do students always make the same
mistakes?
If you can anticipate any of these issues, then UDL
strategies can help.
Book a meeting with Professor Scott Tanaka
(stanaka@centennialcollege.ca) for one-on-one support
or to learn more about UDL resources that are available
at Centennial College.
Enrolment Update
In Fall 2023, we continued to manage unprecedently growth,
surpassing our projected enrolment (6,440 students) by 10%,
with 7,087 students in total. We also started our Winter 2024
semester strong at 7559 students total, keeping in line with
numbers similar to our off-the-charts Winter 2023 enrolment of
7,571 students. A big thank you goes out to all staff for your
continued efforts and support our growing number of students.
Special Message from the Dean Barry O’Brien (January 2024):
Given the recent announcement from IIRC, it's clear that the
Ontario College sector is facing numerous uncertainties. The policy
framework is dynamic, and as I write this, it may have already
undergone further changes. Rest assured that your management
team is actively thinking and planning our responses to all potential
scenarios. Together, I am confident that we can navigate the
challenges that lie ahead.
Faculty Mobility: Unpacking the
Changing Climate of Logistics
As International Business program faculty,
we are dedicated to equipping our students
with a global perspective on the everchanging
landscape of business and
logistics. In early October, Professor Mauro
Spies and I embarked on a Faculty Mobility
program sponsored by Service and Global
Experience (SAGE) and The Business
School to attend the FIATA World
Congress. At this remarkable event,
discussions around “The Changing Climate
of Logistics" elevated our understanding of
what actions are currently being
undertaken by Freight Forwarders around
the world to manage the movement of
goods while balancing the needs of
companies to minimize their carbon
footprint.
A Global Stage for Logistics
Transformation
The International Federation of Freight
Forwarders Associations (FIATA) World
Congress is a truly global event that brings
together leaders, experts, and innovators
from the field of logistics and freight
forwarding. Participants from over 70
countries met in Brussels, Belgium to
explore how the logistics industry can move
forward to meet government-set goals and
regulations around climate targets. Over
the course of several days, speakers
shared insights on the potential impact of
customs digitalisation, the significance of
changing customer expectations around
green shipping, the challenges around data
exchange and the pressing need for
transparency & standardization in this
industry.
Global Networking and Industry
Insights
One of the most important elements of this
event was the focus on fostering strong
industry connections. The FIATA World
Congress provided a unique platform to
network with global logistics leaders, share
experiences, and gain insights into current
industry trends. As congress participants
Mauro and I had the opportunity to witness
firsthand some of the most advanced
technologies and software tools being
adopted in the field of logistics. We were
able to speak with representatives across
the field from port operators and customs
authorities to freight insurance providers,
fleet operators and companies offering
software solutions to understand how they
see their respective roles in empowering
freight forwarders to meet their
sustainability goals.
A Transformative Influence on
International Business Programs
The insights and experiences gained from
the FIATA World Congress in Brussels
have already started to transform the
International Business programs at
Centennial College. The firsthand
knowledge and greater global perspectives
we have gained are being integrated into
course content and discussions, ensuring
that students are equipped to address the
evolving landscape of logistics with
expertise, innovation, and sustainability in
mind. In addition, we hope to make some
significant program changes over the next
year that we believe will help prepare our
students for careers in logistics, in Canada
and beyond.
In Conclusion
Faculty Mobility is a great way to enrich
program curriculum and ensure that the
content in the classroom remains rooted in
industry practice. Our trip to the FIATA
World Congress in Brussels has helped us
understand some of the profound changes
taking place in the logistics industry, as it
navigates the changing climate of logistics.
Through faculty engagement with global
leaders in the logistics industry, our
International Business programs are wellprepared
to continue producing the
forward-thinking, responsible, and
innovative business leaders of tomorrow.
goes well beyond her role in the classroom,
as she proudly serves as the Principal at
Teaching, Learning & Scholarship
Message from the President: CQAAP
Dear Colleagues,
Some wonderful news to share! Following an
intense and very comprehensive College Quality
Assurance Audit Process (CQAAP), Centennial
College has met all six CQAAP standards and has
received the highest rating of Mature Effort for
meeting the expectations embodied in the quality
standards.
Isn’t that something! Confirmation that not only are
we doing the right things, but those right things are
being recognized for their excellence. Actions that
were intentional. Many times, you have heard me
talk about how we are putting students first,
focusing on academic quality and agility, embedding
Indigeneity, equity, diversity and inclusion into all we
do, and realigning our processes and efforts to be
institutionally more effective. Along with building on
the successes of previous audits and the efforts of
individuals and teams dedicated to this work, we are
now seeing the impact.
Indeed, we were one of the first, if not the first,
Ontario College to create a dedicated department
for academic quality and since then have worked
hard to establish robust processes and mechanisms
to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach to
academic reviews. Led by our Centre for Academic
Excellence and Program Quality, all areas of the
College are now aligned with Quality Assurance
(QA) processes and the institution’s strategic
direction and processes are in place to receive and
action inputs from all internal stakeholders –
institutional effectiveness in action!
Key Findings
A panel of audit experts appointed by the Ontario
College Quality Assurance Service (OCQAS) first
reviewed an extensive self-study report that we
submitted (deeming it “exemplary”) before going on
to interview approximately 170 people and
concluded that,
“…it was clear that there is a
lived, student-centred
culture of quality assurance
and quality improvement, a
culture of moving from surviving
to thriving, so that every student
gets a quality education, and
every graduate is fully prepared
to be a global citizen.”
The panel in particular noted the behaviours – the
things we do – that so positively impacted our
performance across all standards:
• cross-divisional synergy and collaboration in
the interest of continuous quality improvement
and student success;
• agility in collaboratively responding to
changing contexts and emergent issues,
investing in and effectively leveraging
technology and systems; and,
• efforts to address anti-Indigenous and anti-
Black racism to ensure inclusive teaching,
learning and working experiences.
With much appreciation
It is your work, and the commitment of your
colleagues across the College, that has made this
audit so successful. Thank-you especially to those
who met virtually with the OCQAS panel to evaluate
our continuous improvement performance and
quality assurance processes and policies, including:
• students and recent graduates;
• Program Advisory Committee members;
• Board of Governors representatives;
• executive team members;
• deans, chairs and faculty;
• colleagues from quality assurance, teaching
and learning, and student support service
departments; and,
• heads of service and administrative
departments.
A huge “shout-out” and heartfelt thanks too, to the
Learning and Engagement Committee members, to
the College’s quality assurance team, and to many
of you across our divisions and schools for your
stellar work in preparing for, and participating in, our
College Quality Assurance Audit Process.
To every one of you, who work every day to
constantly improve academic excellence and drive
student success, thank you. Know that your efforts
and dedication are recognized and sincerely
appreciated. Your hard work has delivered this
outstanding result and is unquestionably building a
strong and sustainable future for this gem of an
institution of ours!
With much gratitude and tremendous admiration,
Connected
Giving Back to our Community
Holiday Clothing Drive
During the winter season, The
Business School’s Success Advisor
Team led a Holiday Clothing Drive in
TBS, collecting gently used winter
clothing for our students. Items were
provided to students in need in the
TBS boardroom on December 13,
2023 (along with hot chocolate and
treats). Thank you to all our faculty
and staff for your donations and
support on this initiative.
Food Drives Supporting the
Scarborough Community
Throughout the fall semester, The Business School has been
collecting non-perishable food items in supporting the
Scarborough community. The first food drive took place at the
TBS Fall Kickoff event and carried on with different initiatives
throughout the semester, including the Business and
Management department who collected a substantial haul in
support of Feed Scarborough. Thank you to everyone for all
your support!
Feed Scarborough
During the Fall semester, The Business School was out
volunteering in the community, helping prep, cook, and
pack meals as part of Feed Scarborough. On October 5,
2023, Members of the TBS Team assisted with Feed
Scarborough’s ambitious goal of making 3,000 turkey
dinners to go out to those in need for the Thanksgiving
weekend. On December 21, 2024, a team from the
Business and Management department volunteered,
helping to provide meals for those in need during the
holiday. Thank you to everyone who took part!
Illustration Supporting Student
Scholarships
For the second year, Holly Main donated an original art piece
for the silent auction at Centennial’s Pride Celebration. Funds
raised from this event are in support of Student Scholarships.
Picture to the left: Holly with the new owner of her “Capy Pride”
illustration. Thank you, President Craig Stephenson, for all the
support you provide to staff and students. (Closer look at the
Feed Scarborough, established in 2018, evolved during the
COVID-19 pandemic to operate five food banks, a mobile meal
program, community gardens, a vaccine initiative, educational
programs, and a co-op student initiative, serving 4500 residents
weekly. The organization introduced a unique community grocery
store, allowing guests to choose items based on their preferences,
promoting dignity, and eliminating stigmatizing long lineups. To learn
In Memoriam
This summer, we said an unexpected goodbye to our longstanding
contract faculty member, Michael Green, who passed
away on August 18, 2023. Michael has been teaching with
Centennial for over 15 years in International Banking and Trade
Finance within our IBM and GBM programs. He was our previous
‘Executive in Residence’ in The Business School and was very
active in the financial services sector. He made many strong
connections for students with employers and was well liked by his
colleagues. Michael loved teaching, his students and Centennial
College and will be dearly missed.
In Memoriam
Michael Green
April 15, 1941 - August 18, 2023
Michael would often have conversations about how to better
prepare our students for the working world and how to best get
them jobs. Prior to the pandemic and after our return to campus,
Michael’s favourite thing to talk about shifted from the
employment of our students to his grandchildren. We will miss
Michael’s care and thoughtfulness and will certainly miss seeing
the joy on his face when he would show pictures of his beloved
grandchildren.
One of our faculty, Dominic Pullano, sadly passed away
unexpectedly on November 4, 2023. Dominic, a dedicated
educator, started teaching with The Business School in the Winter
of 2023, after his retirement from the Catholic School Board.
Dominic was passionate about communication and leveraged this
passion teaching both BUSN333 Business Culture & Collaborative
Practices and BUSN733 Business Culture & Craft.
In Memoriam
Dominic Pullano
March 9, 1961 - November 4, 2023
From Dominic’s obituary:
“He dedicated his work life to Catholic Education with both the
Halton and Durham Catholic District School Boards. He served on
many committees including Catholic School Chaplains of Ontario
and When Faith Meets Pedagogy. He served as the editor of the
Pontifical Mission Society magazine as well as professor at
Centennial college. As a committed lifelong learner, he pursued
his Doctorate of Ministry from the Catholic University of America.
As a deacon he served the communities of St. David’s and St.
Joseph the Worker parishes. He lived a life of service, always
stepping forward to support those in their times of greatest need.
He was a source of hope and inspiration to all who knew him.”
