How it Works!
WindStars is a book based program with supporting materials such as instructional videos, backing tracks
and printable files available as free downloads from the WindStars website: www.nuvo-windstars.com. You
can also view the instructional videos on our WindStars YouTube channel.
WindStars encourages the close connection between teachers and students through active classroom
participation. We also encourage parent/guardian involvement when possible.
Throughout this book you will see icon references like those shown below. These will guide you to relevant
online resources. Each tune has a backing track (music only) and a practice track (with instrumental part).
Print files include fingering charts and supplemental materials.
In WindStars 2, there are Student Books for each instrument including the jFlute, jSax, Clarinéo and jHorn.
These books can remain in the music classroom or be sent home periodically for additional practice. PDF
copies of all of the music in WindStars 2 can also be printed from our website at www.nuvo-windstars.com
so students can access the music anywhere.
jHorn: The jHorn Student Book is available in treble clef and bass clef editions. The
treble clef book teaches trumpet fingerings while the bass clef teaches baritone/tuba
fingerings. Note that when the jHorn plays in treble clef, it will need to be converted
to concert pitch (C-tubes included). See pages 18-19 for more information.
This Teacher Book shows corresponding page references to the Student Books in the top right corner of
the page. You can look for these so you know which materials the students will see in their books. The page
numbers are the same in all student books regardless of instrument.
Digital copies are available!
If you would like a digital copy of any WindStars Student Book to project in the classroom, please contact
WindStars to register as a teacher. Contact information can be found on the WindStars website:
Rhythm Review
The following are note values used in the initial tunes of WindStars 2. Make sure students have plenty of
opportunities to listen, move to and speak steady beat/rhythms before playing NUVO instruments.
Whole Note and Rest
Half Note and Rest
Quarter Note and Rest
Eighth Notes and Rests
Beat Tracks
01 05
The WindStars website has fun beat tracks in various styles. You can use them in echo and
improvisation practice both vocally and with instruments.
Example Rhythm Activities (Vocal or Instrumental)
● Poison Pattern: Choose a short rhythmic (or melodic) pattern to be the “poison pattern” (or the pattern
they should not repeat). Provide a pattern (vocally or with an instrument) that students echo back and
occasionally throw in the “poison pattern.”
● Finish It: While keeping a steady beat, give a student a rhythm on the first beat of a pre-established
meter. Do not provide a rhythm for the remaining beats in the measure. The student will respond by
repeating your rhythm for beat one and filling in the rest of the measure with their own rhythms.
There are many rhythmic activities in the WindStars 1 Teacher
Book if you need additional ideas.
Student Book - Page 7
Creating First Sounds
You may choose to use “first sound hand positions” as explained on the previous pages or just the
mouthpiece/headjoint to create initial sounds. You can later move to “proper playing position” with each
finger placed on a specific key or valve (as explained on pages 30-33) at your discretion.
With all instruments, make sure students are standing or sitting tall without collapsing their upper body.
Instruct them to bring the instruments to their mouth, do not bring the head down to the instrument.
Firstnote Lip Plate:
1. Close your lips around the Firstnote lip plate.
2. Exhale a gentle steady stream of air into the instrument. Do not blow too
hard or the note will jump up an octave.
Standard Lip Plate:
1. Say “Pooh”- freeze your lips when you are done.
2. Repeat step 1 but do not say the word, just use air.
3. Bring the jFlute to you, not your head to the instrument.
4. Check that the opening of the lip plate is parallel with the floor.
5. Place the edge of the lip plate opening on your chin where the lip meets the skin.
6. Take a deep breath and exhale a fast and steady stream of air aimed
downwards towards the opposite edge of the lip plate.
Experiment with the following adjustments to find the best sound:
● Roll headjoint in/out
● Move head joint left/right horizontally
● Aim air higher/lower
● Use the right hand to roll flute forward/backward
