London Derbies are always 

an incredible occasion and 

this will be our biggest 

attendance of the season 

for a women’s fixture here 

today, I’m sure it’s going to 

be a superb atmosphere. 

I must take this chance to 

place on record my thanks 

to our outgoing CEO Lucy 

Wray. Lucy has been a 

champion of women’s 

sport throughout her time 

at Saracens and we are 

grateful for all that she has 

given to the club. 

I am delighted to welcome 

Mark Thompson as our new 

CEO. Mark arrives with a 

wealth of experience, and 

I know that he will be a 

brilliant fit for the club. 

Mark attended last 

weekend’s fixture against 

Trailfinders Women, having 

a chance to speak to some 

of you, our loyal supporters. 

In the coming weeks, you 

will hear more from him, but 

for now, our attention is on 

today’s match. 

It’s been a superb campaign 

so far for our women’s 

side, with the defeat to 

Gloucester-Hartpury the 

only blemish on their record. 

Matches against Harlequins 

always bring with them 

an additional element 

of drama and I am sure 

that this afternoon will be 

another brilliant occasion. 

At Saracens, we pride 

ourselves on being at 

the forefront of growing 

the women’s game. This 

season, we are averaging 

attendances well in excess 

of 1000 spectators for 

home fixtures and this is 

only going to continue to 

grow. 

With Gallagher Premiership 

Rugby taking a break for 

the Six Nations, it would be 

brilliant to see you all again 

for our next women’s home 

fixture against Leicester on 

3rd March. 

I can’t wait to see the 

action on the pitch this 

afternoon, and I know how 

much effort has gone in

There’s a great feeling in 

the team at the moment, 

securing 8 from 9 wins 

across the league so far 

has put us in a really good 

position. After a tough loss 

to Gloucester-Hartpury 

away, we came back and 

trained the best we have 

all season. It feels like 

things are really starting 

to click. 

It was great to follow 

that up with a solid team 

performance against 

Trailfinders last weekend. 

We’re really focussing on 

how we can play inspiring 

rugby and working on that 

confidence throughout the 

squad in order to be able to 

do that. 

Saracens versus Harlequins 

is always a high stakes 

game, where the physicality 

and competitiveness 

always goes up a notch. 

They have a breadth of 

quality players; however 

I’m looking forward to how 

our players stand up to 

this; Jess Breach hitting a 

new high speed last week,

SIDE’S 5TH TRY AGAINST TRAILFINDERS

SETTER 

An all-star cast, a 

tantalising plotline and 

just enough drama to 

make it a box office hit! 

Whichever way you look at 

it, today’s London Derby 

between Saracens Women 

and Harlequins has all the 

hallmarks of being another 

instant classic. 

Big games bring out the 

best in players and, whilst 

Jamie George is preparing 

to lead his country into 

battle against Wales at 

Twickenham later today, 

all eyes are firmly fixed on 

NW4 first up, as Marlie 

Packer and Lotte Clapp 

prepare to do the same in 

an equally spicy derby. 

The history is there for all 

to see. Three finals played 

between the two sides, 

with Saracens winning two 

to Harlequins’ one. Today 

marks the next chapter in 

this storied rivalry between 

two sides who have for so 

long been at the forefront 

of the women’s game. 

Challengers have risen 

from the South West in 

recent seasons, but the 

battle between North and 

West London still stands 

out as the one with the 

most excitement around it. 

The script writes itself, with 

international talent littered 

across the field, and headto-head 

battles that would 

be movie worthy in their 

own right! 

Harlequins, by their own 

high standards, have had 

a slow start to the season. 

However, their nine-try 

victory over Sale Sharks 

last weekend will have 

sent a wave of confidence 

coursing through their 

veins. 

They’ll be smarting too 

and feel like they have a 

point to prove. Last time 

these two sides met was 

back in December, where 

Saracens left their hosts 

scoreless on a freezing cold 

afternoon. 

For the women in black, it’s 

been a confident start to 

the campaign. They sit top 

of the tree, albeit having 

played a game more than 

Gloucester-Hartpury, with 

their only defeat coming

against the champions at 

Kingsholm. 

Last weekend’s victory over 

Trailfinders Women gave 

those in attendance a taste 

of the exciting attacking 

brand of rugby that Alex 

Austerberry’s side are 

trying to play this season 

and they’ll be hoping for 

more of the same this 

afternoon. 

Harlequins are improving 

with every game though. As 

fullback Ellie Kildunne said 

last week, they can feel the 

confidence coming back 

into the side. 

“It’s massive. We’ve got 

confidence behind us, and 

we know we can score in 

the red zone. We’ll look to 

thrive on that this week. 

We’re building each week, 

and we know it’s going to 

get better.” 

The Quins fullback was 

optimistic about her side’s 

chances and why shouldn’t 

she be? After a four-try 

performance at the Stoop 

last weekend, England’s 

incumbent 15 will again 

look to lead from the front 

for her side. 

She’ll be up against another 

one of her international 

teammates too. Whilst 

Kildunne’s try-scoring spree 

came in one match, Jess 

Breach has been scoring 

them for fun all season long 

in Saracens colours. Having 

come out on top against 

Abby Dow last weekend, 

the Red Rose will be 

intent on putting another 

one of her international 

colleagues to the sword this 

afternoon. 

Whatever way you look at 

it, this afternoon’s Duel will 

be one to savour!

The industrious number 

8 has been an all-action 

presence for her side this 

season, with a series of 

huge performances for 

her team. Having missed 

out on WXV due to injury, 

Cleall explained that her 

scintillating form has come 

after a renewed focus on 

her enjoyment of the game. 

“I’m enjoying my rugby at 

the moment! This season, I 

want to be as impactful as 

I can on the pitch, whether 

that’s scoring, setting 

up others or putting in a 

tackle or a turnover that 

can give us momentum. I 

just want to focus on what 

I’m doing here at Sarries. 

I’m feeling confident in my 

performances, but I know 

that I can get better still.” 

After a first loss of the 

season to Gloucester- 

Hartpury, Saracens 

returned to winning ways 

with a comprehensive 

victory over Trailfinders 

Women. Whilst the side 

were pleased with the 

result, Cleall admitted that 

they still have another level 

to go to. 

“We were really pleased 

with how we responded 

to that loss in Gloucester 

against Trailfinders. 

We had a good week of 

training and put in a solid 

performance. We still want 

more though, and we know 

where we can make a step 

up again this weekend.” 

Harlequins may not be 

in their familiar position 

towards the top end of 

the table, but Cleall is all 

too aware of the threats 

that they pose. After a 

commanding victory over 

Sale last weekend, she 

and her teammates know 

that Quins will be arriving 

in North London full of 

confidence.

“Everyone knows the 

threats that Harlequins 

bring. They might not be 

where they want to be in 

the table but as we saw 

against Sale, they are a 

dangerous side when they 

are in a confident mood. I’m 

expecting it to be a really 

tough test this afternoon.” 

Matches between Saracens 

and Harlequins have long 

been the benchmark in elite 

women’s rugby. While new 

sides have come to the fore 

in recent seasons, Cleall 

admits that there is still 

something special about 

taking on her side’s London 

rivals. 

“It’s always a big one 

playing against Quins. 

It always adds an extra 

dynamic to the game 

whenever we go up against 

each other. At the end of 

the day, once we’re on the 

pitch, we all focus on that, 

but I’m sure there’ll be a bit 

of banter whilst we do it! 

The build-up to the match 

has seen a series of viral 

videos from the club, 

including a Confessions 

Booth, where Cleall 

admitted to owning a 

Harlequins shirt! 

As the number 8 laughed 

though, it was done to 

support her sister, despite 

the negative feedback she 

had received! 

“Look, in my defence, it had 

my name on the back, and 

it wasn’t that expensive!! 

I’ve only ever worn it when 

I’ve been supporting Bryony 

playing for Quins. Trust me, 

I’m Sarries through and 

through, but I do apologise 

for buying it!”

TO THE SEASON, 

HARLEQUINS WOMEN 

MEAN BUSINESS THIS 

WEEKEND. 

A London Derby always 

gets the pulses racing and 

Harlequins will be intent 

on avenging their defeat 

to Saracens at the Stoop 

back in December. 

Their 53-12 victory over Sale 

Sharks last weekend saw 

them return to the sort of 

form that had seen them 

finish as Champions back 

in 2021. 

Harlequins secured a 36- 

29 victory over Sarries in 

the Allianz Cup encounter 

between these two sides 

earlier in the season, 

however both squads will 

look markedly different this 

afternoon. 

Amy Turner has a plethora 

of talented internationals 

to pick from, with Ellie 

Kildunne arguably the 

standout name. The 

fullback adds a real 

X-factor to this Quins side 

and will be one to watch 

out for this afternoon. 

Up front, summer recruits 

Silvia Turani, Abbie Fleming 

and Connie Powell have 

already added extra 

bulk and international 

experience to an exciting 

pack, whilst in the backline, 

players like Izzy Mayhew 

are starting to show what 

they can do at elite level. 

Saracens won this fixture 

32-12 last season in front of 

a record crowd, but Quins 

will be intent on changing 

that this afternoon. 

In the 16 meetings between 

the two sides in the 

Premier15s/ PWR era, 

Sarries hold the upper 

hand, with nine victories to 

six, with a draw in North 

London added in for good 

measure. 

Form may have Saracens 

down as the favourites but 

write this Quins side off at 

your peril. 

After a slow start to the 

season, there are signs that 

Quins are beginning to find 

their groove. Victories over 

Trailfinders, Leicester and 

Sale see them currently sat 

in 6th place. However, they 

are well-placed to close 

the gap on Loughborough 

Lightning in 5th, should the 

opportunity present itself.

EMILY SCOTT 

Position: Fly-half 

DOB: 30/6/92 

Ht: 165cm Wt: 68kg 

Honours: England (38) 

Fresh from making her 100th 

appearance for Harlequins 

last weekend, Scott will be 

back pulling the strings for 

the West Londoners this 

afternoon. A classy operator 

with ability to play across the 

backline, Scott has settled 

into the fly-half role in recent 

seasons for Amy Turner’s side. 

An England international, 

who made her debut in 

2013, Scott has featured for 

her country both in XV and 

7s. She represented Team 

GB at the 2016 Olympics, 

before returning to XVs. A 

former Saracen, Scott joined 

Harlequins in 2018, featuring 

in every match of the England 

Grand Slam winning side. A 

playmaker in every sense of 

the word, Scott has the ability 

to light up a rugby pitch with 

her ability with ball in hand 

and with the boot. Expect 

to see her in the thick of the 

action this afternoon. 

ELLIE KILDUNNE 

Position: Fullback 

DOB: 8/9/99 



Having made her England 

debut as an 18-year-old in 

2017, Kildunne has quickly 

established herself as one 

of the best finishers in the 

game. A former Gloucester- 

Hartpury and Wasps player, 

Kildunne joined Harlequins in 

2021 and has quickly settled 

in to life in the quarters, 

showing her ability with 

ball in hand at fullback. A 

lightning quick runner, with 

the ability to break a game 

at will, her four-try showing 

against Sale Sharks last 

weekend showed that she 

is getting back to her best. 

Kildunne started the World 

Cup final in New Zealand and 

was a member of the 2023 

Grand Slam winning side. An 

all-round athlete, Kildunne 

with be crucial to Harlequins’ 

hopes this afternoon.

Position: Centre 

DOB: 16/6/98 



The niece of Fijian legend 

Akapusi Qera, Tuima first 

showed her talent at Exeter 

University, playing for 

Bristol Bears in the Tyrells 

Premier15s. After only two 

months of top-flight rugby, 

she made her England debut 

against Canada, before 

moving to Harlequins in the 

off-season. A hard-running 

centre and a player with an 

eye for the posts, Tuima was 

part of the 2021 title winning 

squad for Harlequins, scoring 

15 points in the final against 

Saracens at Kingsholm. Her 

deft hands and ability to 

manipulate a defence make 

her a big weapon for Amy 

Turner’s side in attack. She’ll 

be hoping to force her way 

back into England contention 

too, ahead of the 2024 Six 

Nations.

“IT WAS OUR CASTLE. WE WOULD 

PROTECT IT WITH EVERYTHING WE HAD.” 

THOSE WERE THE WORDS OF FORMER SARACENS WOMEN’S AND ENGLAND 

HOOKER AMY GARNETT, AS SHE REFLECTED ON WHAT MADE BRAMLEY 

ROAD SUCH A SPECIAL PLACE TO PLAY AT. 

Garnett had a storied 

career, captaining 

Saracens during their 

highly successful period in 

the mid-2000s, as well as 

becoming the first women 

to reach 100 caps for 

England. 

Garnett’s era was one filled 

with incredible players and 

big characters, and it was 

a Saracens and England 

hooker who first inspired 

her to join the North 

London side. 

“I was at De Montfort 

University in Bedford. At 

the time, Nicky Ponsford 

was coming in and 

coaching us. She was the 

Saracens and England 

hooker at the time. I knew 

Sarries were the best 

team in the country, and 

I wanted to be a part of 

that. People like me and 

Karen Andrew would travel 

down each week to train 

and that was just how it 

was in those days.” 

Garnett’s time at Saracens 

was played out against 

the backdrop of incredible 

success on the field for 

the side, with Garnett 

explaining that the bond 

the squad created was 

what made them such a 

tight-knit unit. 

“I like to call it the golden 

era! That’s how it felt 

at the time. We were so 

tight as a team, and we 

had so many amazing 

players. They weren’t 

necessarily internationals, 

but they were people you 

could always rely on as a 

teammate. We socialised a 

lot away from the pitch and 

we shared the wins and 

losses together as a group. 

It just made it special.” 

Garnett was part of an 

era of players who had 

to combine a 9-5 job with 

their rugby career. Whilst 

many players are still in 

the same position today, 

for Garnett, it still amazes 

her to look back at how she 

juggled rugby and her job in 

the Met Police. 

“At the time, it didn’t cross 

my mind. For all of us, it 

was just the norm. I look 

back now and ask how on 

earth we managed to work, 

train and play. Sometimes, I 

could be stuck at a job with

the police and then playing 

rugby hours later. There 

were so many training 

sessions in Lea Valley where 

I would be training on 

the back of doing a night 

shift or vice versa. It was 

brutal, but at the time, 

it was just normal. Lots 

of my teammates let me 

crash and sofa surf as well, 

which was a huge help, 

but looking back now, it 

does amaze me how that 

dynamic worked!” 

Garnett’s career has seen 

some incredible highs, but 

she admitted that playing 

for the Saracens second 

team when she was first 

breaking through would 

always be one of her 

highlights. 

“I remember when I was 

a second team player, 

we shocked Wasps in the 

quarter finals of the cup. 

We had so many young 

up and coming players 

who would go on to play 

for England and ended 

up facing the Sarries 1st 

team in the semi-final. I 

was asked to play for the 

1s, but I said no as I wanted 

to stick with the 2nd team 

that had made it that far. 

We lost, but it was a great 

game and off the back 

of it, I was asked to play 

for the 1s in the cup final. 

That was one of my first 

appearances for the first 

team and that meant so 

much.” 

Once she broke into the 

first team, Garnett never 

looked back, as her form 

for Saracens earnt her an 

England call-up. It was a 

national cup final against 

Clifton though, that stood 

out for Garnett as one of 

those special matches. 

“That Clifton cup final 

stands out to me. We 

played at the police 

headquarters in London. I 

remember getting whacked 

by a young Nolli Waterman, 

but other than that, it 

felt like a perfect game. It 

was just before I went on 

an England tour, but for 

us, everything clicked that 

day. I got selected to tour 

for England off the back 

of that game which was 

amazing.” 

Garnett also captained the 

club for several seasons, 

as she explained how she 

took to leading a side that 

contained so many worldclass 

players, despite being 

a young gun in comparison. 

“There is no higher honour 

I don’t think than to be 

asked to captain Saracens. 

I was still fairly young in 

my rugby career, but to be 

asked to captain a team 

that had the likes of Emma 

Mitchell, Helen Clayton and 

Claire Frost in it was huge. 

Leading a team like that 

was an absolute honour, 

but in a way, it was quite 

straightforward, because 

there were so many leaders 

in that group. Maxine 

Edwards was part of that 

side too and she was the 

England captain, so for me 

to be asked to lead them 

was very special.”
