In addition to our medical work, we also
undertake Public Relations Photography and
private projects, as the NHS is developing
partnerships with those enterprises that can
benefit the public sector.
Our services can be delivered in a number of
ways such as designing patient information
leaflets with clear explanations of conditions.
We also assist consultants and new doctors’
plan and deliver lectures, produce posters
for medical disciplines which enhance the
delivery of medical education.
Our patients will also visit us ‘in-situ’
as our medical photographic abilities
are renowned in recording, storing, and
securing those images that can be used
by medical records to track any changes
in disease or treatment options. In other
instances, we also provide Medico-legal
support to both patients and medical
teams recording injuries that may have
been sustained through accidental injury.
We are regulated by our own professional
body, the Institute of Medical Illustrators
(IMI). IMI have successfully lobbied for
State Registration through the Healthcare
Professionals Council in the UK.
Photography and imagery are powerful
tools that can express values and Medical
Illustrators adhere to an institutional and
personal Code of Conduct so that our work
is delivered in a clear, cost-effective, straight
forward, confidential and respectful manner.
Above all we believe that the NHS is about
people, not only about making them well,
but also keeping them healthy, delivering
visual information to them and their carers,
so that they can make informed choices.
Medical Illustration departments house a wide variety of
skills under one ‘roof, usually working for the National
Health Service’s in the United Kingdom (UK). From
Photographer’s to Audio-visual technicians, Graphic
Designers and Videographer’s, our remit is to not only
act as ambassadors for the NHS in helping to project
the NHS identity, but to also support all involved in the
health care providing services that assist in giving
the best care and care options to patients.
Testimonials Contact Details
Thank you for the hard work done on my
two posters. They were both successful and
gorgeous...In fact, they were so successful
that they will be displayed at the College of
Emergency Medicine for a few days during the
membership and fellowship diploma ceremony!
Janos Peter Baombe, MD, MCEM.
We needed a team photo of the Cystic Fibrosis
team... We booked a photographer who
was extremely patient... He was particularly
helpful and accomodating in taking individual
pictures... I was so impressed with his friendly
efficiency that I picked up the telephone to
thank him. It’s the first time I have used this
service in the new hospital, but I have begun
to spread the word, as I suspect many people
are unaware of this excellent resource.
Tim David, Professor, Honorar-Paediatric, RMCH.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, may
I thank you most sincerely for the time
and effort you put into participating in the
Young Peoples’ Health Event... You played
an important part in making the event an
extremely successful occasion. This is the first
time since becoming a Foundation Trust that
we have held a membership event such as this.
Peter W. Mount, CMFT Chairman.
Just wanted to say thanks so
much for all your help with
the poster last week. We
won 3rd prize at the meeting
(it was a national meeting
with about 45 other posters)
which was great!
Puneet Ranote, Specialist Registrar
Anaesthetics, CMFT.
The whole service from
beginning to end has
been excellent and I
would be grateful if you
could pass on my thanks.
Clare Kirrane, Nurse Specialist.
Many thanks again for the
recent poster. We presented it
in a meeting in San Fransisco
and it was a huge success.
Anju Goyal, Paediatric Surgeon.
Just returned from
conference, your videos were
the highlight at the meeting.
Copies were requested from
various delegates.
Umakanth Panchagnula,
Consultant Anaesthatist, MRI.
We have great pleasure in letting you
know that the Sarc poster won the
innovative prize voted by attendee’s.
Once again we would like to thank
you for your hard work and patience.
In addition to our medical work, we also
undertake Public Relations Photography and
private projects, as the NHS is developing
partnerships with those enterprises that can
benefit the public sector.
Our services can be delivered in a number of
ways such as designing patient information
leaflets with clear explanations of conditions.
We also assist consultants and new doctors’
plan and deliver lectures, produce posters
for medical disciplines which enhance the
delivery of medical education.
Our patients will also visit us ‘in-situ’
as our medical photographic abilities
are renowned in recording, storing, and
securing those images that can be used
by medical records to track any changes
in disease or treatment options. In other
instances, we also provide Medico-legal
support to both patients and medical
teams recording injuries that may have
been sustained through accidental injury.
We are regulated by our own professional
body, the Institute of Medical Illustrators
(IMI). IMI have successfully lobbied for
State Registration through the Healthcare
Professionals Council in the UK.
Photography and imagery are powerful
tools that can express values and Medical
Illustrators adhere to an institutional and
personal Code of Conduct so that our work
is delivered in a clear, cost-effective, straight
forward, confidential and respectful manner.
Above all we believe that the NHS is about
people, not only about making them well,
but also keeping them healthy, delivering
visual information to them and their carers,
so that they can make informed choices.
Geraldine Thompson
Medical Illustration departments house a wide variety of
skills under one ‘roof, usually working for the National
Health Service’s in the United Kingdom (UK). From
Photographer’s to Audio-visual technicians, Graphic
Designers and Videographer’s, our remit is to not only
act as ambassadors for the NHS in helping to project
the NHS identity, but to also support all involved in the
health care providing services that assist in giving
the best care and care options to patients.
Manchester Children’s Hospital
Manchester Children’s Hospitals provide
specialist healthcare services for children
and young people throughout the
Northwest, as well as nationally and
internationally. The hospitals see
135,000 patient visits each year across
a range of specialties including
oncology, haematology, bone marrow
transplant, burns, genetics, nephrology,
cardio-respiratory, gastroenterology,
neurology, ENT and orthopaedics.
These services are currently provided
at Booth Hall Children’s Hospital, the
Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital
and Saint Mary’s Hospital for Women
and Children until the New Children’s
Hospital is open.
The New Children’s Hospital (Open
from June 2009) will be the largest in
the U.K. It is part of The New Hospitals
Development, an investment of over
£420 million into healthcare services
for Manchester and the North West.
It is the largest single investment ever
to take place in Greater Manchester
Hospitals, resulting in a brand new
Children’s Hospital with state of the
art facilities.
More research involving children is vital
as many medicines given to the young
are only tested in adults, and as a result
far less is known about how effective
and safe they are in children.
The Greater Manchester, Lancashire
and South Cumbria Medicines for
Children Research Network is based at
the Children’s Hospital and is changing
the face of research involving children
in the region.
There are lots of opportunities for
enthusiastic paediatric pharmacists
and technicians to work within the
pharmacy team.
Anticipatory Care Calendar (ACC) for people
with Learning Disabilities
The ACC is a simple tool to improve daily
surveillance of health for adults with learning
disabilities (LD). It overcomes some of the
barriers that can prevent people with LD
accessing health services. It is an innovative
approach to daily health assessments designed
to alert staff to health changes and provide clear
directions about accessing primary care. A traffic
light system triggers a specified response to
infection to detect microorganisms in the
bloodstream of the patient. A volume of blood is
inoculated into bottles containing growth
continuously in the laboratory. When a positive
result is generated further investigations are then
employed to determine the nature of the
organism and ultimately its susceptibility to
antibiotics. The initiative is designed to reduce the
number of contaminated blood cultures, which
give rise to ‘false positive’ results and may result
in inappropriate therapy for the patient, and inef
3d Footwear imagining.
Ian Spencer is currently using a 3 dimensional
photo imaging system to measure patient’s feet
for the correct fit of Orthopaedic footwear. This
allows a perfect fit with little or no alterations
needed. The footwear is more patient acceptable
and provides greater comfort and support than
hand made shoes. The system uses CAD/CAM
technology to obtain a perfect fit. Therefore
repeatability is maintained, this is always a
problem with footwear. The footwear is ready
Established on 1 April 2008, The National Institute for Health Research
(NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is a highly
successful partnership between Central Manchester University
Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) and The University of
Manchester. The BRC is one of 12 prestige centres of medical
research excellence across the UK funded by the NIHR and is
designated by the NIHR as a Centre of Excellence in Genetics
and Developmental Medicine. The BRC is located on the Central
Manchester Hospital site, within Corridor Manchester, which is
the location for Europe’s most comprehensive Clinical Academic
Campus. It comprises five NHS hospitals and two universities, which
over the last 10 years have been the building blocks of Manchester’s
research and innovation capability. The Manchester BRC has a key role
to translate research ideas into new therapeutics and diagnostics to
improve the delivery of healthcare to patients.
Working with the Manchester BRC gives companies access to:
• A comprehensive, one-stop clinical trials facility including one of
only four UK facilities for paediatric trials
• Europe’s largest single-site biomedical campus serving more than
1 million patients a year in five specialist hospital settings
• The expertise of world class academics and clinicians
• NIHR accreditation and funding
• A key partner in many NW research and biotech/pharma
networks.
The NIHR Manchester BRC State of the Art Facilities Established Partnerships
We are particularly grateful to the North West Regional Development
Agency (NWDA) for funding support which has enabled us rapidly to
accelerate our research programmes. This has included recruiting new
professional level Clinician Scientists and the establishment of high
quality technology capabilities to push forward the translation of
research ideas into new therapeutics, diagnostics and devices.
Fundamental to the success of the Manchester BRC is our
commitment to providing access to high quality core facilities and
support services to all our clinical researchers (funded through
NIHR and the NWDA), including:
• Research day-case operating theatre (opening Autumn 2009)
• Diagnostic equipment – scanning, chip analysers, radiology,
haematology and biochemistry
• Tissue Biobank (opening Winter 2009)
• State of the art genomics, proteomics and metabolomics facilities
(opening early 2010)
• Pharmacy services – receipt and storage, preparation and
dispensing of medicines including proposed GMP facility
• Paediatric and adult Clinical Research Facilities.
World class researchers: The BRC brings together the skills of
clinician-scientists, scientists, doctors, nurses, midwives and allied
health professionals based across Europe’s largest single site clinical
academic campus. Manchester already has a well-established research
infrastructure, and the BRC will invest more than £50 million over four
years in new staff, facilities and equipment.
Established partnerships: The BRC has established partnerships
and collaborations with many organisations across the research and
translational medicine spectrum:
Introduction to Clinical Photography and Medical Illustration Services
Medical Illustration departments house a wide variety of
skills under one ‘roof, usually working for the National
Health Service’s in the United Kingdom (UK). From
Photographer’s to Audio-visual technicians, Graphic
Designers and Videographer’s, our remit is to not only
act as ambassadors for the NHS in helping to project
the NHS identity, but to also support all involved in the
health care providing services that assist in giving
the best care and care options to patients.
In addition to our medical work, we also
undertake Public Relations Photography and
private projects, as the NHS is developing
partnerships with those enterprises that can
benefit the public sector.
Our services can be delivered in a number of
ways such as designing patient information
leaflets with clear explanations of conditions.
We also assist consultants and new doctors’
plan and deliver lectures, produce posters
for medical disciplines which enhance the
delivery of medical education.
Our patients will also visit us ‘in-situ’
as our medical photographic abilities
are renowned in recording, storing, and
securing those images that can be used
by medical records to track any changes
in disease or treatment options. In other
instances, we also provide Medico-legal
support to both patients and medical
teams recording injuries that may have
been sustained through accidental injury.
We are regulated by our own professional
body, the Institute of Medical Illustrators
(IMI). IMI have successfully lobbied for
State Registration through the Healthcare
Professionals Council in the UK.
Photography and imagery are powerful
tools that can express values and Medical
Illustrators adhere to an institutional and
personal Code of Conduct so that our work
is delivered in a clear, cost-effective, straight
forward, confidential and respectful manner.
Above all we believe that the NHS is about
people, not only about making them well,
but also keeping them healthy, delivering
visual information to them and their carers,
so that they can make informed choices.
Manchester Children’s Hospitals provide
specialist healthcare services for children
and young people throughout the
Northwest, as well as nationally and
internationally. The hospitals see
135,000 patient visits each year across
a range of specialties including
oncology, haematology, bone marrow
transplant, burns, genetics, nephrology,
cardio-respiratory, gastroenterology,
neurology, ENT and orthopaedics.
These services are currently provided
at Booth Hall Children’s Hospital, the
Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital
and Saint Mary’s Hospital for Women
and Children until the New Children Children’s s
Hospital Hospital is is open.
Manchester Children’s Hospital
The New Children’s Hospital (Open
from June 2009) will be the largest in
the U.K. It is part of The New Hospitals
Development, an investment of over
£420 million into healthcare services
for Manchester and the North West.
It is the largest single investment ever
to take place in Greater Manchester
Hospitals, resulting in a brand new
Children’s Hospital with state of the
art facilities.
More research involving children is vital
as many medicines given to the young
are only tested in adults, and as a result
far less is known about how effective
and safe they are in children.
The Greater Manchester, Lancashire
and South Cumbria Medicines for
Children Research Network is based at
the Children’s Hospital and is changing
the face of research involving children
in the region.
There are lots of opportunities for
enthusiastic paediatric pharmacists
and technicians to work within the
pharmacy team.
The ACC is a simple tool to improve daily
On behalf of the Board of Directors, may
I thank you most sincerely for the time
and effort you put into participating in the
Young Peoples’ Health Event... You played
an important part in making the event an
extremely successful occasion. This is the first
time since becoming a Foundation Trust that
we have held a membership event such as this.
Peter W. Mount, CMFT Chairman.
We needed a team photo of the Cystic Fibrosis
team... We booked a photographer who
was extremely patient... He was particularly
helpful and accomodating in taking individual
pictures... I was so impressed with his friendly
efficiency that I picked up the telephone to
thank him. It’s the first time I have used this
service in the new hospital, but I have begun
to spread the word, as I suspect many people
are unaware of this excellent resource.
Tim David, Professor, Honorar-Paediatric, RMCH.
Thank you for the hard work done on my
two posters. They were both successful and
gorgeous...In fact, they were so successful
that they will be displayed at the College of
Emergency Medicine for a few days during the
membership and fellowship diploma ceremony!
Just wanted to say thanks so
much for all your help with
the poster last week. We
won 3rd prize at the meeting
(it was a national meeting
with about 45 other posters)
which was great!
Many thanks again for the
the highlight at the meeting.
Copies were requested from
