Welcome to Charlotte!
It is my pleasure to send warm greetings to the members of the National Association of Real
Estate Brokers as you gather for your Mid-Winter Conference. Your mission to promote
equitable housing and property ownership policies for historically marginalized communities is
more important now than ever.
As a member of the Charlotte City Council, I understand firsthand the challenges our
communities face in accessing affordable housing and financial services.
That is why I am committed to policies that break down barriers and open doors for all residents,
regardless of race, ethnicity or income. Initiatives like down payment assistance programs, antidisplacement
measures and fair housing enforcement are critical priorities for our city.
The work of NAREB and its members has paved the way for countless families to achieve the
dream of homeownership and build generational wealth. Your leadership in providing education,
mentorship and advocacy for minority real estate professionals also helps ensure our industry
reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. Charlotte is proud to host your conference, and
I hope it will inspire and empower you to keep fighting for justice and opportunity.
Though the path to equity is long, I have no doubt NAREB will continue to lead with courage,
compassion and conviction. Please accept my best wishes for an engaging conference and my
sincere appreciation for all you do to build a more just society.
Congresswoman
Alma S. Adams
Representative (D-NC, 12th District)
After winning a special election in November
2014, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D.
was sworn in immediately as the 100th woman
elected to the 113th Congress. Congresswoman
Adams was elected to her fifth full term
representing the 12th Congressional District of
North Carolina on November 8, 2022.
Representative Adams serves on the Committee
on Education & the Workforce and the Committee
on Agriculture. She holds several leadership roles; as Assistant Whip for
the Democratic Caucus, Ranking Member of the Committee on Education
& Labor’s Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, and co-chair of the
Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, the Black Maternal Health
Caucus, and the e-Learning Caucus. She has previously served on multiple
committees including the House Committee on Financial Services and the
House Committee on Small Business.
Her signature legislative accomplishment in Congress is the enactment of
H.R. 5363, the Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources
for Education (FUTURE) Act which permanently provides funding totaling
$255 million a year for all Minority-Serving Institutions, including $85
million for HBCUs.
The 4Hs - For Congresswoman Alma Adams, there are four necessities
that all people require to live a quality life – affordable and accessible
healthcare, access to healthy and nutritious food, fair and affordable
housing, and a quality, first-class education. These essentials, which Alma
calls “the 4H’s”, should not be political issues; they should be rights
guaranteed to all people. She believes this because she knows personally
how hard it is to survive without them.
recorded seven Top 40 hits,
including the No. 1's "In My
Dru Hill rose to prominence during the late 1990s, releasing a string of No. 1
R&B hits: "In My Bed," "Never Make a Promise," and "How Deep Is Your Love."
The group's original members are Mark "Sisqó" Andrews, Larry "Jazz"
Anthony, Tamir "Nikio the N-Tity" Ruffin, and James "Woody Rock" Green. The
four high school friends formed the group in 1992 and called themselves Dru
Hill after their Baltimore neighborhood Druid Hill Park.
The group was discovered while performing at a music industry convention.
Their performance grabbed the attention of an Island Records exec who
asked the group to record a cut of the song "Tell Me" which would appear in
the film "Eddie." Their performance was so impressive that their version
replaced the original version sung by Blackstreet member Dave Hollister.
Dru Hill was signed to Island Records on the spot. "Tell Me" appears on the
group's 1996 self-titled debut album, which is certified platinum. The single
became a Top 5 R&B hit and went gold.
Mayor Shawn Patterson-Howard
City of Mount Vernon, New York
Shawn Patterson-Howard is the Mayor of the City of
Mount Vernon, New York serving the people of the
historic Westchester community as the first woman in
this capacity since her inauguration in 2020.
With over three decades in public service as a leader
in the early fight against the HIV-AIDS epidemic, a
social worker, and non-profit executive director,
Mayor Patterson-Howard employs her
straightforward and pragmatic style to advocate for
and raise the profile of the state’s eighth densest city.
A somewhat reluctant politician,
Mayor Patterson-Howard relies on collaboration and partnership on every level to
address everyday issues and major crises, from the COVID-19 pandemic and food
insecurity to infrastructure failures and gun violence, to set Mount Vernon on a path
to growth, resilience, sustainability, and true governance.
Mayor Patterson-Howard was reared with her sister on the southside of Mount
Vernon by her mother and stepfather. She first became acquainted with Mt. Vernon
government when she would visit her grandfather, the City’s very first African-
American employee, an elevator operator in City Hall.
A product of the City’s public school system, then Shawn Patterson, went to Howard
University, the real “HU,” where she would pick up both a degree from the School of
Social Work and a new last name when she wed her husband Marvin Howard in their
sophomore year. “SPH”, her newly minted moniker furthered her education with a
Master’s in Public Administration and Urban/Community Planning from the John Jay
College of Criminal Justice while raising their only child, a daughter, Nia.
Mayor Patterson-Howard’s trailblazing work in public health, specifically AIDS
awareness and reduction, housing for persons with AIDS, immigration programming,
and anti-recidivism/anti-violence efforts, establishment of the County’s first drug
treatment court, executive leadership, and planning and oversight of multi-milliondollar
budgets have prepared her to be a servant leader in government. Still in her
inaugural term, Mayor Patterson-Howard has fast become a force to reckon with as
she has risen to the national stage for her unapologetic advocacy for environmental
justice and resources to remedy the remnants of racist infrastructure.
SPECIAL
GUEST
Mayor Shawn Patterson-Howard continued
Her knack for building strategic partnerships to bring resources and expertise to
her city, and her co-creation of strategies with state and federal partners have been
instrumental in rebuilding trust and preventing disaffection in the future. In three
short years, her efforts and skills have resulted in the acquisition of life-saving
equipment and vaccines to service the community during the height of the
pandemic, the successful “Save and Transform Mt. Vernon Hospital” campaign to
preserve the City’s only hospital and access to lifesaving services, an increase and
improvement of both youth and senior programming, the reopening of the City’s
Historic Memorial Field after a 12-year hiatus, the award of over $150 Million in grant
funding to rebuild the City’s crumbling sewer system (the largest singular award in
New York State history), the launch of the City’s Zombie Home Elimination Initiative,
increased sales tax revenue for three years straight, the paving of more than 120
roads with 150 more scheduled, a 14% reduction in violent crime, the modernization
of the City’s vehicle fleet and first-responder equipment, the establishment of a
Police Wellness Precinct (the first of its kind in the entire Northeast United States),
provided relief to homeowners and businessowners to avoid foreclosure and
eviction, initiation of the City’s Comprehensive Planning process for the first time in
nearly 60 years, and establishment of an Economic Development Center open to
residents of all incomes.
Though Mayor Patterson-Howard continues her family’s legacy of being “first,” the
first woman and person of color appointed President and Chief Executive Officer
for the Yonkers Family YMCA in New York, the first elected woman Mayor in the
City’s 200 plus year history, and the first African American woman and woman-ofcolor
Mayor in the County of Westchester New York’s history; she has no desire to
be “the only” and paves the way for those beside her and behind her.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Mayor Patterson-Howard values
volunteerism and holds positions on several local and national Board of Directors
including 1st Vice President of the African American Mayor’s Association (AAMA),
Secretary of the Westchester Municipal Officials Association (WMOA), Member of
the Children, Health & Human Services Committee of the United States Conference
Elder Gary Sprewell
Minister & Entrepreneur
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has
anointed me to preach the gospel…
Elder Gary Sprewell, a son of the church was
raised at the House of Prayer COGIC in Los
Angeles, California under the leadership of the late
Dr. A.M. Poe Sr. Sprewell preached his first message
at age six and was said to be among the youngest
to be ordained in the Church of God in Christ. An
extremely gifted minister with a passion for souls,
his practical approach and precise prophetic ear
causes him to be a regular guest for some of the
largest and most well known ministries in the
world. Crossing denominational lines, His global
ministry has been received in 15 countries and
on 4 continents. Sprewell is the proud recipient of several prestigious awards,
citations and accommodations from both political and religious sectors. One of
his greatest honors was receiving the Presiding Bishop’s Soul Winners Award
and being named the number one National Evangelist in the entire COGIC
denomination for six consecutive years (2015 – 2020).
Not just a Preacher but also an Entrepreneur, Elder Sprewell is the President
and CEO of GOD SENT MUSIC GROUP, Cartoonrentals.com and GSM Publishing
LLC. In 2008 he was asked to move to Grand Rapids, Michigan to work with
Multi-Award winning Artist Marvin Sapp, “Mr. Never Would’ve Made It” Sprewell
wrote his first book “The Upgrade” in 2016 and is completing his second book
“Limitless” which promises to be a best seller as well. Sprewell’s innovative
and creative mind has set him apart as a quintessential leader of his generation.
He has served tirelessly on all levels of the Church of God In Christ. Nationally
he serves as a founding board member of COGIC Music LLC (COGIC’s record
label), Creator and director of Gifted as well as the founder and director of
Project Emerge (an online mentorship program which now hosts programing on
the word network). In 2022, Sprewell was appointed as President of the
International Department of Evangelism making him not only the youngest to
ever serve but also the first full time evangelist to hold this position. Elder
Sprewell has been blessed to share his ministry on both national radio and
television programs (Word Network, BET, and DayStar to name a few). Also an
anointed psalmist, he recently released his debut album entitled “Gary Sprewell
Church’n With Friends featuring Karen Clark –Sheard, Marvin Sapp, Kierra
Sheard, Chrystal Rucker and many others. To God be the glory! For the Spirit of
the Lord is upon him, for he has anointed him to preach the Gospel…
