Where We’re Eating
Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: MudHen Brewing Company on Rio Grande Avenue in
Wildwood. This BBQ & Brew spot is under the same umbrella as Poppi’s
Brick Oven Pizza, Dogtooth Bar & Grille, KONA and the Hen Houses.
The vibe: It was a late Sunday night dinner and the restaurant was
pretty quiet. Those dining were taking advatage of MudHen’s Sunday
Uncle Bill’s
Funday specials. It’s a great deal offered every week – $10 bites including
wings, beer chip nachos and loaded tater tots; $7 Mudmosas and
Bloody Marys and $4 select drafts. Something we’ll definitely be keeping
in mind for our next visit. We already knew what we were ordering
before walking in the door.
The food: We started with the pretzel sticks – our long-time favorite
served with beer cheese, spicy mustard and charred onion aioli. Dan
OPENING FRIDAY, MARCH 15
then mixed things up with a brisket sandwich pepper jack cheese, coleslaw
& homemade bbq sauce served with a side of their homemade hen
chips. Nicole tried the Black & Bleu salad served with avocado, tomato,
onion and crumbled blue cheese. Both were super filling so we passed
on dessert – something we never do. Safe to say the portions were plentiful
and worth every bite. We kept it simple and washed it down with a
few Pepsis, but the Holly Beach Wheat is one of our favorites and we’ll
definitely be enjoying a few pints the next Sunday Funday.
The takeaway: MudHen Brewing Company is open daily from
11am. Not only is the Brewpub and Brewery something to check out,
they have tons of events to look forward to. Next up is their Blues, Brews
& Country Festival March 8-10. Enjoy live music all weekend, vendors
like Shop Sydney, Face Painting by Donna Cox, Angels Envy Whiskey
tasting and you can personalize your own cowboy hat while supplies
last. If you’re looking for something more athletic, sign up for the Mud-
New this season - fresh squeezed OJ! hen Brewing Co. 5K on April 19. Registration is now open for the annual
race for which they partner with DELMO Sports. To learn more about
all the events Mudhen Brewing Company have around the corner, head
BEACH & PERRY, CAPE MAY
to their website or check out their social media.
THE ULTIMATE CAPE MAY FOOD & DRINK GUIDE
What You Need To
Know About The
Food And The Vibe
Chef Carl Messick has taken over what was once
Godmother’s and transformed it into a relaxed, finedining
restaurant. Exquisite dishes featuring seasonal
and sustainable ingredients.
A locals’ favorite for a reason. There’s a Key West vibe,
good food, regular entertainment, and the views are
spectacular.
A little slice of paradise on the bay, enjoy dishes
with Caribbean flair, listen to a few jam bands and
watch spectacular sunsets while sipping a cocktail or
domestic draft.
This year brings new ownership to the beachfront
restaurant and bar. Rooftop dining, live music, fresh
local seafood and signature orange crushes — the
fun awaits!
Just steps from the Washington Street Mall, Iccara
Italian Bistro & Seafood brings you the fresh flavors of
Italy in a charming, welcoming atmosphere.
A Jersey Shore classic serving brunch and dinner.
Visit their full bar mixing up specialty Jersey-themed
cocktails, craft beer, and much more. Enjoy indoor
and outdoor dining with an expanded patio.
Offering fresh seafood and a variety of burgers,
sandwiches, salads and apps. Make sure to grab a
stool upstairs overlooking Surfside Pier and enjoy
local craft beer and signature cocktails.
Take-out, fish market, restaurant, raw bar, breakfast,
dinner... The Lobster House has it all. Drinks on the
Schooner American before dinner is a must-do Cape
May experience.
The menu features all regional fare including fish,
vegetables, fruits and herbs from Beach Plum Farm
and other New Jersey farms. They also offer some fun
sweets next door at the Chocolate Shop.
A huge hit and locals’ favorite for a reason. Excellent
food (the thin-crust pizzas are excellent), great bar
vibe and service. Lucky Bones gets it right every time.
It’s the original fine dining restaurant in Cape May.
The food is always creative and the breakfasts and
brunches, hard to beat — hence the lines.
One of the season’s earliest vocalists
is the ubiquitous House Finch, a
raspberry cowled, swollen-billed
mite of a bird whose hurried, warbled,
somewhat rambling song
often ends on a rough or discordant note.
A bird of southwestern xeric habitats,
in the 1950s, the birds were being sold in
New York pet shops under the trade name
“Hollywood Finch.” It is illegal under the provisions
of the International Migratory Bird
Treaty to sell native birds in the U.S. Rather
than face fines, the shop owners opened the
cages, then their doors and the rest is history.
Now the pretty little finches are found coast
to coast, with interlopers meeting their native
kin sometime in the 1990s.
They are probably the most common bird
at your feeder. You might mistake them for
Purple Finch, a larger, burlier irruptive northern
finch that often winters in our region in
numbers. I’ve even had local residents tell
me they have Pine Grosbeaks coming to their
feeder — a boreal species never recorded here.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
My first House Finch was a bird coming
to a bird feeder in Stokes State Forest, back
in the 50s. I identified it first as a Purple
Finch (which breed there), then as a Common
Redpoll (an unlikely prospect). House Finch
was a never considered since the range maps
in my field guide at the time showed House
Finch nowhere close to New Jersey.
No longer. The guides have caught up to
the Hollywood Finch’s expanded range. The
Late Winter Harvest
closest House Finch is probably sitting on the
utility line in front of your house or hogging
the Black Oil Sunflower seed at your feeder.
Why this column, now? Because on
Groundhogs Day, my good friend Don Freiday
emailed to let me know a bird was singing
near his house. After a long winter, the
bird’s cheery song was a welcome fanfare for
Spring. Other early vocalists include Northern
Mockingbird — the dapper mimid perched on
your old unused TV aerial. And American
Robin whose caroled song is the source of the
bird’s moniker “Wake Robin,” also the title of
naturalist John Burrow’s 1871 nature book.
From March to June, the robin’s dawn
chorus will be part of the morning soundscape.
The early risers have even been known
to sing all night on the outskirts of floodlight
lit automobile dealerships. On the World
Series of Birding, our team used to nail the
day’s first robin at 2am at the Shell Station
on Green Pond Road as we topped up for gas.
There was never any doubt Robin would make
our list.
Celebration time! Insert confetti emoji
here! If you head to my Flix You
Missed Podcast (flixyoumissed.com,
follow the link) we’re celebrating 100
episodes! We started three years ago
with a review of Queen’s Gambit. Third birthday,
fourth season... now our 100th episode.
Last year, many of the guest columns
here were posted to the podcast. We featured
bonus material you can’t read here. This season,
we plan to post reviews of outstanding
films released a while back that you may have
missed.
Why dive into older content? Watching
movies and TV is a lot different today. What’s
streaming? What’s only in theaters? When
will a movie be available after running exclusively
in theaters? Is that TV show releasing
its new episodes one-by-one or all at once?
Finding something cool to watch has
become much more challenging. That’s why
Flix You Missed is “the podcast you didn’t
know you needed.” Like this column. Scroll
to see if something pops out that you haven’t
seen. See a movie you skipped at release?
Maybe you’ll want to check it out. Whatever
the case, we hope you click and go for a spin.
Now a TV update. What’s with these beefy
loners who don’t seem to have a home? They
wander the country, finding themselves in
precarious situations and needing to punch
their way out of it.
Reacher season two was completely satisfying.
Alan Ritchson returns as the lead char-
acter, Jack Reacher. He walks throughout the
country carrying only a toothbrush — imagine
that. The second season was even more
personal for our main characters as many
of their former military colleagues are being
killed! Why? Riveting! But Jack has some
competition, albeit from a guy who travels in
comparatively luxurious style.
Tracker is a new CBS series about Colter
Shaw, who also travels around the country but
with a detached RV. He takes on jobs that pay
rewards (like missing persons cases), and the
show’s premiere got a big boost by following
the Super Bowl earlier this month. Let me
call this show, “Reacher light.” It stars hunky
Justin Hartley of This Is Us fame. It’s good…but
I’m not rushing to the TV each week to make
sure I don’t miss it. It’s got some kick, but does
it have Reacher kick? Still, Tracker entertains.
So let’s get real here: who’s hunkier?
Ritchson or Hartley? Oh c’mon, you know
what I mean. Reacher has more grit, but who’s
the heartier beefcake? Let’s start a poll! Email
your choice to flixyoumissed@gmail.com.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, take a leap and start jumping rope!
We’ve entered a leap year in 2024,
and this once-every-fouryears
event can be a chance to
jump out of your comfort zone.
Looking for a big leap? If you’re a
triathlete, consider the DeSatnick Real Estate
Escape the Cape Triathlon, which begins with
a leap off the Cape May Ferry. This popular
event, known for both the beauty of the scenery
and the camaraderie of the participants, is
scheduled for June 2, and registration is filling
fast. Or, consider getting in shape for the April
opening of the Tree to Tree aerial adventure
obstacle course in the Cape May County Park.
Though you’re secured in a harness throughout,
this activity is very physical, requiring
you to be fairly fit to move from platform to
platform, but it’s also a great deal of fun.
Looking for a smaller leap? Up your social
media game with better “beach jump” pictures.
After all, your friends are not catching
those perfect shots with a casual snap of the
shutter. Experts suggest you hold your camera
or phone down low, turn it horizontal, video
your subjects as they leap, then select a still
from the video. The photographer — or tripod
— should be close to the subject for best
results. Ask participants to jump repeatedly,
bending their legs and pointing their toes so
the jumps appear higher. Bare feet tend to look
better than flying flip flops, and as with most
photographs, golden sunset hour adds magic.
Leap into yesteryear by breaking out your
jump rope. Jumping rope is an excellent car-
diovascular exercise, of course, but it also
works coordination and balance. More importantly,
it’s the kind of activity that doesn’t feel
like a boring winter workout where you watch
the minutes tick by on the treadmill. Warm
up and stretch, especially if you’re outside on
a cold day. If it’s been a while since you ruled
the playground in your mary janes, you’ll want
cushioned sneakers. If you need a new rope —
the days of borrowing the family clothesline
are probably over — buy one that is about your
height plus a little less than three feet. You
want to be able to stand in the middle of the
rope and have the handles reach your armpits.
Start with a beaded rope, which moves a bit
slower, allowing you to learn, or re-learn.
Weighted ropes may make jumping rope a
more efficient workout, but they also hurt
more if you mess up and the rope smacks your
calf. It’s also okay to forget about the health
benefits and remember when movement was
a joy instead of a chore and skip along your
sidewalk repeating the counting rhymes of
your youth.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My fiancée and I are planning a Halloween
wedding. My parents offered to pay for everything,
but it seems there is a catch. They don’t
approve of our love of Halloween. In addition,
I did not ask my older sister to be in the wedding
party. She is not my favorite person and
much older than the other attendants. She also
said she did not want to be in the wedding. My
mother is now threatening not to pay. We could
pay ourselves, but would have to cut the guest
list by 15 percent, which is fine because that’s
mostly my parents’ friends. I expect if we take
a stand, they may not come. I think I’m ok with
that, but other times I think I should go along
with it. What do you think? Am I making a big
deal of something trivial? — Moody Bride
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Moody
Your wishes on this special day are not
trivial. The answer to your question is this:
What will make you happy? Standing up to
a domineering mother? Or perhaps coming
up with a compromise aka calling her bluff.
If your sister truly does not want to be in the
wedding, tell your mother you are fine with it.
But you must decide if your sister is “forced” to
comply as well, will you be fine with that? Why
not take your sister to 5 West Pub for a nosh
and a beverage and ask her — politely. As for
Halloween — go for it.
Dear Answer Lady
I have been dating “Joe” for about five
months. My husband walked in one day and
said he didn’t want to be married anymore. He
was very generous financially, but I was devastated.
I had no idea he was so unhappy. Then
“Joe” came into my world through mutual
friends. We hit it off right away. The problem
is, he asked me for a loan and I declined. He got
nasty and told me, “You obviously don’t like
me as much as you say you do or would trust
me.” Am I being unfair? — Second Thoughts
Dear Thoughts
You are not being unfair. He is being
CLARA is a young German Shepherd who
was left tied to the shelter entrance. She is
a bit shy until she’s comfortable, but once
she knows you, she’s affectionate and sweet.
Clara loves to run in the yard and chase toys.
Her leash skills are improving daily, and she
enjoys walks. Clara needs a patient home to
progress in.
HERCULES & ZEUS are a bonded pair of
young nine-month-old boys. They have
been together since birth and would be best
adopted together. The pair are learning proper
leash skills and they love to explore together.
It may seem daunting adopting two dogs, but
they are a joy to watch and will keep each other
occupied plenty.
THANO is a three-year-old spotted pointer
mix who came to the shelter when his owners
could no longer care for him. He’s an energetic
boy who sometimes needs to be reminded of
his manners. Thano’s leash manners are quite
good however and he enjoys his walks. He
would make a wonderful family companion
for one willing to work with his energy.
LULU is a 13-year-old cat who came to the
shelter when her owner passed away and the
home where she was staying became too noisy
for her. She is a bit overweight, but with the
right diet, she’ll be totally healthy. Lulu would
no other pets or children. If interested in this
beauty, contact the shelter.
WENTZ is a five-year-old boy whose owner
was recently placed in hospice, leading him
to the shelter. He has only lived in one home
