BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
LAURA HUIZAR ’06, ’12 J.D.
Laura Huizar ’06, ’12 J.D. became involved in Dwight Hall as a first-year
student through Bridges ESL, a Dwight Hall student-led member group that
teaches English as a second language to New Haven residents. She loved
connecting with students and learning about their life as immigrants in
New Haven. Laura also served as a Co-Coordinator on the Hall’s Student
Executive Committee in 2005. After college, Laura worked closely with
the Dwight Hall Urban Fellows as a community liaison while working for
Junta for Progressive Action, a nonprofit in New Haven.

Laura is now a political appointee with the Biden-Harris Administration in
the U.S. Department of Labor. She is a Senior Counsel in the Office of the
Solicitor, a job that allows her to work on a wide range of worker rights issues,
such as misclassification, overtime protections, and child labor.
Laura has been part of the Dwight Hall Board for thirteen years. Looking back, Laura sees her
undergraduate experience with Dwight Hall as a critical introduction to the world of public
service and social justice. The skills and community she developed through Dwight Hall have
helped her pursue a career in the nonprofit and government sectors focused on immigrant and
worker rights issues.
