Hormones act as chemical messengers and we 

all experience major fluctuations in the levels of 

androgens (a group of sex hormones) during times 

such as: 

- puberty 

- stress 

- pregnancy 

- menopause 

It is during these times, that excessive levels of 

androgens “switch on” stem cells in the skin - 

et voila, new unwanted hairs emerge! 

Unfortunately sufferers of a condition called Polycystic 

Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can attest to this. Of those 

affected by this condition, approximately 70% 

experience unwanted hair growth on the face and 

chest. 

In short, knowing that we are able to permanently 

remove these troublesome hairs altogether is a 

powerful feeling, especially given the emotional 

and mental stress accompanied with constantly 

maintainance.

New Art & 

wellbeing trail 

in Beaconsfield 

Creative Partnerships 

Beaconsfield (CPB) is a 

group of like-minded 

local residents who want 

to inject more creative 

arts into the community, 

impart new skills and bring 

people out of isolation. They are creating 

a colourful trail of outstanding community 

mosaics that thank the town’s keyworkers 

and pay tribute to the way the community 

pulls together during difficult times. 

Three mosaics have already been created 

in Beaconsfield, the angel outside The 

Medical Centre, the doves outside The 

Dove Cafe in St Thomas’s Church and words 

outside Beaconsfield Library. The mosaics 

are designed by an artist called Maud Milton, 

she has a unique method which has involved 

about 1000 residents designing their own tiles 

to go into the mosaics. The local community 

has come together in workshops to create the 

tiles. We have involved everybody, from staff 

at the Medical Centre to children in schools. 

This has been a great way to bring the 

community together and develop individual 

creativity.

We are currently developing four new mosaics 

for 2024. These will form a trail in the New 

town. We are in the process of fund raising for 

our next phase of activities. 

The trail will take in important local sites such 

as the Model Village, local churches and the 

town green. It will also flag up routes towards 

natural parks and woodland such as Hogback 

Woods. 

The design of the new mosaics will 

complement the first phase and once again 

will feature angels and birds. These new 

mosaics will be located at sites relevant to 

the key workers and our central theme of 

recognizing those who help others in times 

of need: Royal Mail Sorting Office, Railway 

Station, Waitrose Supermarket and St 

Michaels And All Angels church hall. 

The mosaics cost money to make and 

design and CPB are immensely grateful 

to Beaconsfield Council, the community 

board and other local organisations who 

have contributed towards the initial mosaics. 

The team are now fundraising for new 

mosaics and are approaching local 

organisations for contributions. However 

it is local businesses and people who will 

benefit from the mosaics and we would 

like to give you the opportunity to contribute 

towards them. Many small contributions 

soon add up.

2023: A Great 

Year for 

Buckinghamshire 

Scouts 

We had our endurance events which involved 

a 10km hike for Cubs (boys and girls aged 

8 to 10), a 40km hike for Scouts (boys and 

girls aged 10 to 14), and a 60km hike for our 

Explorers (boys and girls aged 14 to 17). 

We had an orienteering event for Beavers (boys 

and girls aged 6 to 8), Cubs, Scouts and Explorer, 

with team and individual events. This was a great 

success with route-finding skills and observation 

being the key to finishing in excellent times. 

We’ve seen the opening of more Squirrel Dreys 

(boys and girls aged 4 and 5) and over 500 Beaver 

Scouts experienced a sleepover at Gulliver’s Land 

in Milton Keynes. 

We’ve had many Scout Troops and Explorer Units 

who went camping or had sleepovers. Some of 

these sleepovers were in Group HQs whereas 

others were in museums and on boats. Several of 

our Troops and Units had international trips, which 

included camps in Belgium, France and Holland. 

Volunteer Daniel said, “It’s been great to see the 

Scouts grow and develop since they’ve been in the 

Troop. I hadn’t been involved in Scouts when I was 

younger and had no experience of working with 

young people. I was able to share my interest in the 

outdoors and I’ve led events including night hikes, 

canoeing, making bird boxes and geocaching.

Local history museum and charity, 

Chiltern Open Air Museum is re-opening 

on Saturday 9th March. The 45-acre site, 

in Chalfont St Giles, is an outdoor museum 

with a collection of historic buildings 

spanning 2000 years of history offering 

a captivating journey through time. 

From ancient structures to more recent additions, 

each building tells a unique story, contributing to 

the museum’s rich tapestry of history. 

New for 2024, visitors can put on a pair of 3D 

glasses and delve into COAM’s captivating 

mini 3D exhibition, a series of images captured 

on-site by photographer Ethel Davies. From 

Easter, you can see a collection of willow 

sculptures highlighting the animals and nature 

found on site from the sheepdog working the 

flock of sheep, the heron looking for his lunch in 

the pond, the fox stalking the chickens, and the 

deer exploring the woodland. 

On Sunday 24th March you can come and listen 

to Heritage Stories; a collection of stories, told 

by local storytellers, about how they have 

come to be in Buckinghamshire and how their 

communities have become firmly established as 

part of our beautiful county. Weather permitting; 

the storytelling will happen around a campfire 

adding both atmosphere and warmth! 

Over the Easter holidays, you can take part in 

an Easter trail, there will be pony rides over the 

Easter weekend and the 2nd and 9th April are 

Terrific Tuesdays with family crafts and clay

What’s been happening at 

Beaconsfield Town Council? 

Spring is in the air and we’re now in 

the final quarter of our financial year. 

At the Full Council meeting on 14th 

December 2023, the proposed budget 

for the Year 2024-2025 was presented by 

Cllr Paul Mason and the final proposal was 

agreed by the Town Council. The Mayor, Cllr 

Jackson Ng noted that we are a 

financially prudent council and thanked 

staff and the Resources Committee for 

the work done in preparing the budget. 

The safety alterations to parking by our 

schools in Wattleton Road will be moving 

ahead this year along with the project to 

reduce speed on the A40. 

The Town Council maintains playgrounds, 

open spaces, football pitches, woodlands, 

Holtspur Bank Nature Reserve and Butterfly 

Reserve, provides public toilets, maintains 

public buildings like the Town Hall and 

Holtspur Community Centre, provides 

planters, hanging baskets and benches 

to enhance the town, and the Christmas 

lights. 

In addition to our normal work, 

proposals this year included the 

renewal of the Walkwood Management 

Plan, the Community Garden Project, 

introducing some wildflower planting, 

feasibility studies for a dog park, youth 

project and speed reduction initiatives. 

We will be looking at ways to improve 

parking in Holtspur Way and to try and 

introduce some Electric Vehicle charging 

in the town. The Council also committed 

to restarting the project to renovate the

The budget proposal is made by 

calculating expected income less expected 

expenditure, which results in a figure 

known as The Precept which is funded 

by council tax. 

Beaconsfield residents will be pleased to 

know that Beaconsfield Town Council will 

not make any increase to the precept in 

the coming year. 

We will continue to deliver our services, 

including having brought the Grounds 

Service in-house, to the residents of 

Beaconsfield for about £1.50 per household 

per week.

As we seek to improve our health and 

prolong healthy ageing, it’s important to 

reflect on our gut flora. The microbiome 

is made up of trillions of bacteria, fungi 

and viruses that usually live in balance in

Prenuptial agreements – 

the importance of timing 

and being well prepared in 

advance of your wedding 

Spring is a season that symbolises starting 

afresh, or starting over. It often brings a 

flurry of activity as the wedding season 

goes into full force. 

I still recall the beautifully dressed woman 

that appeared in my office 8 years ago for a 

meeting late one afternoon. She handed over 

a pre-nuptial agreement. As I scanned the 

document I realised that it was dated the same 

date as our appointment. She then told me 

that she and her fiancé had married earlier that 

day, and she had come to see me to sign the 

document. Hence the beautiful cream silk dress! 

I had to deliver the bad news that I could not 

do anything for her that day and that she and

I needed to go through her and her new 

husband’s financial circumstances before I could 

advise her on whether the agreement was fair. 

Another important aspect was that the parties 

enter into the agreement with a clear head, and 

the day of the wedding was not it. 

In 2010 following a landmark ruling the court 

gave a clear ruling that an agreement properly 

entered into was of ‘magnetic importance’ and 

that spouses should be held to it, unless it could 

be demonstrated that it was unfair and did not 

meet the needs of the parties. 

Early legal advice is important so that the 

paperwork is done well in advance of the 

wedding, so that you can enjoy your big day.

Bekonscot Opens for the 2024 Season 

Bekonscot Model Village and Railway opened its gates for the 2024 season on Saturday 

10th February. It will remain open 7 days a week, 10.00am until 5.30pm until Sunday 3rd 

November. Enjoy this quintessentially English view of rural life in the 1930s. Set in 1.5 acres 

of immaculate gardens and including an extensive and historic gauge 1 model railway.

boundaries to publish 

an award winning 

children’s book 

Local author, Maxine Johone-Smith, has 

recently published a children’s book titled 

“Journey to the Name Maker”. The story 

is brought to life with beautiful illustrations 

by award winning children’s illustrator 

Joanna Scott. 

During the Covid lockdown, Maxine was 

diagnosed with breast cancer, which 

completely changed her perspective on life. 

One of her lifelong dreams was to write a 

captivating children’s book, so she set about 

making her dream a reality and “Journey to 

the Name Maker” was published in August 

last year. 

“Journey to the Name Maker” is a magical 

adventure following a small bear’s journey as 

he goes in search of his rightful name. Some 

ideas touched upon during Scuffy’s travels are 

to follow your dreams, not be afraid to ask 

questions and look for answers. Through an 

adventurous journey it teaches us that there 

is not always a straightforward way of doing 

things and that sometimes, we need to look 

at things from a different perspective to 

overcome challenges and get to where we 

need to go. 

Maxine is a firm believer in early learning 

through the power of story-telling. She 

believes that reading stories that spark 

the imagination, but are also thought 

provoking, can have a positive impact on 

the development of children’s language and 

communication skills. Story’s help children to 

connect with others, express themselves and 

build confidence from an early age. 

“Journey to the Name Maker” is targeted as a 

self-read for 7+ but perfect for parents to read 

to children from age 5 upwards.
