young people in care. This magazine
contains information about CREATE
programs that create a better life for
Voices in Action Conference
#CREATEVIA2024
As this clubCREATE edition lands in your inbox, hundreds are gathering with
CREATE in Adelaide for the 2024 Voices in Action (VIA) conference!
This conference is like the ultimate hangout where everyone in the out-of-home
care sector in Australia comes together to share what's working and what we can
improve for kids in care. VIA provides a vital platform for young people with lived
experience to have their voices and experiences heard by professionals and
decision makers.
We're buzzing with excitement and hope to see you there. If you can’t make it this
year, stay tuned to our socials where we will be doing regular updates.
World Care Day
In February, we celebrated World Care Day 2024 – the biggest
celebration for kids growing up in care all around the world!
Guess what? YOU helped make it amazing! We listened to all the
awesome things you told us about how we can make things better
for kids in care at important stages of their life.
"It's not just about the changes we've made; it's
also about all the awesome changes still to come!"
A huge shoutout to all those who made their voices heard.
You rock!
T2A Month! What a blast
In November last year we celebrated Transition to Adulthood (T2A) Month in
Queensland, celebrating the journey of young individuals leaving out-of-home care.
This year's theme, 'Participation,' underscored the importance of valuing young
voices, leading to engaging events across Queensland. CREATE and YFS teamed up
for a big T2A kickoff, setting the stage for a fun-filled month.
From Next Step Plus organising events across various locations to addressing
concerns in a YAG session, the focus remained on empowering youth during their
transition.
Breaking
Barriers, with
Every Flight!
Have no idea yet?! That’s totally okay and completely normal.
To help think about your future, here are some questions to
work out what you enjoy doing and what you are passionate
about.
What activities do you enjoy the most?
What do you see
in your future?
Meet CJ, a CREATE Young Consultant taking the
skies by storm! CJ, Qantas’ first female
Aboriginal Pilot in the making, is turning her
dreams into reality, all while crushing
stereotypes #SnapthatStigma.
Growing up with her eight siblings in the
Northern Territory in out-of-home care, CJ’s
journey to the clouds began with a birthday gift
from her uncle – a flight lesson that made her
feel truly free.
“Sometimes there are just so many pressures
on you as a young Indigenous person, and
distractions,” she reflects. Despite the
challenges, CJ stayed focused, excelled in
school, advocated for change with CREATE,
and pursued her passion for flying.
Balancing advocacy, academics, and flights,
she demonstrates resilience and
determination. Now that she has finished
school, she has moved to Toowoomba, where
her dreams will unfold through a Qantas
scholarship program.
CJ’s story is a testament to chasing dreams,
breaking barriers, and #SnapthatStigma. She
knew what she wanted, worked hard, and is
now inspiring us all to reach for the stars. Let’s
celebrate CJ’s journey, embrace our dreams,
and snap away the stigma together!
Transition to
Independence
Time to fill you in on what CREATE is advocating for when it comes to supporting your
Transition to Independence. Here's the scoop:
Take it to 25!
CREATE would like to see all governments across Australia provide increased financial assistance
for young care leavers to help access safe and affordable housing spots for all young people with a
care experience until 25. Extended home-based care, access to public housing – you name it. Let's
make sure everyone has a solid place to call home.
Independent Living Allowance
Leaving care? Imagine having $16,000 annually to better support you and set you up for
independence. We're urging all governments to have an Independent Living Allowance, and the idea
is to make it automatic (opt-out), so you don't miss out on this support. It's about keeping things
straightforward to ensure everyone gets the backing they need.
It's Time to Boost the Commonwealth’s Transition to
Independent Living Allowance (TILA)!
The Commonwealth's Transition to Independent Living Allowance (TILA), a one-off payment of up
to $1,500, hasn't seen an increase since 2009, that’s 15 years! That means it's falling short of keeping
up with the cost of living. Time to shake things up and ensure the support reflects the reality we live
in!
Keeping it real
With everything getting pricier, eating healthy can be a bit of a challenge, right? So, we hit up our
clubCREATE members to spill the beans on their top go-to meals that won't break the bank.
Haeden’s Slow Cooker Chicken Dinner!
What you’ll need:
• 3-4 chicken legs (I chose chicken legs because they are usually a really cheap source of protein)
• 1 cup of medium grain rice
• Honey Soy or Teriyaki sauce - just enough to coat the chicken
• Optional: add frozen veg!
Wash your rice, then fill the water up to the first line of your
index finger.
Add your chicken legs into the rice cooker as well, don't be
worried about the water, this is a one pot wonder.
Pour your Sauce/Marinade onto the meat, then add the lid and
press cook on high for 4 - 6 hours.
Serve and enjoy your marvelous creation
Headen’s Tip: “Be creative! This is a very good
opportunity to hone in on your cooking skills.. all the
great chefs in the world didn't start off with a recipe,
they experimented and so should you!”
Jayden’s Bolognese
You will need:
• Pasta
• Tomato
• Onion
• Garlic
• Bottle of Pasta Sauce
Boil your pasta
As the pasta boils, in another pan add chopped onion and garlic and fry until smelling delicious
Add diced tomatoes and sauce
Once the pasta is cooked, mix it all together and ENJOY!
There are loads more recipe ideas like this in CREATE’s Sortli App. Want to add yours? Email
Advocacy
in focus
You told us about the changes
you wanted to see in
residential care
In 2023, CREATE was asked by the Department of
Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) in Victoria
to speak to young people living in residential care to
better understand the factors contributing to young
people going missing from residential care in a
particular region of Victoria. Through this project, young people told us about what changes they
wanted to see to the residential care system, calling out the need for more thoughtful placement
matching decisions that consider age, gender and experiences of trauma of young people living
in residential homes. Young people also wanted consideration of their social, community, kinship
and education networks when placement decisions are made, so they can stay connected with the
people and places important to them. And young people told us they want the adults around them
to believe in them, encourage them in working towards their personal goals, and hold high
expectations for what’s possible for them.
“Act like a parent does! I reckon that it would be good if they just acted like parents do.”
We elevated your concerns to DFFH to ensure that the voices of children and young people with a
residential care experience are fundamental to planning, decisions and oversight of the residential
care system in Victoria.
Queensland’s Resi Care Review
The Queensland Government launched a review into the
residential care system due to concerns about the
conditions and increasing numbers of young people in
residential care, they’ve asked the community, including
those with lived experiences, for their thoughts on what
needs to change.
CREATE took action by organising a Youth Advisory Group
(YAG) to capture the voices of young people with
residential care experience. You, our experts, guided us
with your insights, and we submitted a comprehensive
report to the government with loads of suggestions. We’re
thrilled to share that a group of young voices even
participated in a Roundtable with the Minister and
decision-makers, who were blown away by the experiences
and opinions shared. Check out our submission.
Developing a Sibling Connection Practice Guide in
South Australia
CREATE has recently presented a report to the South Australian government on sibling
connections in out-of-home care based on a consultation with 25 young people. Our report
highlighted that young people in out-of-home care are often unsatisfied with the level of contact
they have with their siblings. To make things better, the South Australian government has asked
CREATE Foundation to prepare a practice guide to improve sibling connections. It will be
co-designed with young people, so watch this space!
Tasmania raises the age!
The Tasmanian Government has committed to raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14 years
with no exceptions, and raising the age of criminal detention to 16 years. This comes after years of
consistent sector-wide advocacy, with CREATE adding our voice to the chorus of organisations
(including the Tasmanian Commissioner for Children and Young people and TasCOSS), who have
all been calling for this important change. Young people in Tasmania have told us about why
advocating for this change is so important to them:
“Originally when I found out that CREATE was advocating for that [raising the age of
criminal responsibility], I was like, ‘oh, that's interesting.’ I couldn't see how that would
relate to foster care. But now looking at how often young people in out-of-home care
experience youth justice, I think it's really important that CREATE does this. I think it's
great that we are advocating for that.” (Young person, TAS)
This is just the start for us here at CREATE and we will continue to advocate for Governments
across Australia make similar commitments for the children and young people in their jurisdictions.
meet create’s
Meet a CREATE
advocacy and
influencing
manager, Sarah
CREATE welcomes Sarah Chew to our Advocacy and Influencing team. Let’s get
to know her a little better.
When I was little I wanted to be?
A zookeeper because I was certain that
zookeepers didn’t have bedtime curfews, or
had to wake up early for school or even had
homework to do.
My favourite subject at school
was...
English because it was the only class in
school where I had the chance to borrow
and read all the books from the Goosebump
series.
How did you get to where you are
today?
My ancient age has seen me work across
several work roles over the last 7 years
but I have always found myself gravitating
towards working in a space where I have
opportunities to support and advocate for
children and young people in out-of-home
care. The number of children and young
people I have had the honour and privilege
to work with continues to leave me in awe
in terms of their incredible resilience and
strength.
What do you do now here at
CREATE?
I am currently working in the Advocacy and
Influencing Manager role with CREATE and
my team oversees and promotes the
advocacy work for the states of South
Australia, Western Australia, Northern
Territory and Queensland. Our goal is to
influence change in the out-of-home care
sector that will lead to better outcomes and
improve the lives for all children and young
people with a care experience.
Why do you love it?
I love that CREATE is fully committed towards
holding hope and championing the voices of
all children and young people with an out-ofhome
care experience. This is embedded in
the heart and soul of the work that we all do
at CREATE and I am constantly inspired by
the amazing individuals in CREATE who are
so passionate about the work that they do. I
love and value the opportunities I have in my
role to be able to push and drive for real,
positive changes in the out-of-home care
sector.
Mate
Hello, my name is Tess and I am the Family
Engagement Coordinator at Lutheran Care
Foster Care in South Australia.
I support a team of people that recruit great
foster carers that can care for children and
young people, plan fun family events for
families to connect and enjoy together, and we
support families with cultural connections and
resources to ensure that children and young
people can thrive in their care even when they
have a different cultural identity to their carers.
Why are you a CREATE Mate?
I am a CREATE Mate for a few reasons. I
believe that every single young person is of
immeasurable value, it is the role of caring
adults to not just keep children and young
people safe but to also offer them
opportunities to grow and to amplify their
voices, and no one was ever meant to journey
life alone.
What’s something you’re passionate
about in the care sector? What’s
something you’re proud of?
I’m passionate about holding on to hope as an
anchor. Hope is believing that the past
matters, but it doesn’t define the future, and
we all have the capacity to grow (learning to
see things differently, understand things
differently, do things differently).
“When a flower doesn’t bloom, you
don’t try to change the flower but the
environment in which it grows.”
I’m very proud to belong to a community (the
care sector) of people that believe in this and
come to work every day to continually improve
the environment for families and young people.
Everyone’s a bit wacky in their
own way...what’s a fun fact
about you?
I love the simplicity of camping and my
happy place is sitting under the stars
around a campfire with good food and
good company.
ACT ROUND UP
What’s been happening?
NSW ROUND UP
What’s been happening?
What a time in Australia’s Capital Territory! From sibling connection events at
the skate park to getting out into nature for our Youth Advisory Groups (YAG’s),
the ACT CREATE crew have been doing it all.
With two YAG’s focused on mental health, we got a strong understanding of
what mental health means to young people in care and how the care sector can
best support mental health. We also had the opportunity to reflect on the year
that was at our end of year YAG and got some great ideas about what CREATE
ACT can do in the year to come.
CREATE in New South Wales have been having an absolutely great time with
a heap of events and programs with members from all over the state. We have
had the opportunity to spend time with members from the south coast region
at Flip Out and Inflatable World. We had some unreal (and spooky) costumes
at our Halloween Youth Advisory Group and brought out our Ninja Skills at
Tru Ninja.
We welcomed some new Young
Consultants to the CREATE team
after they completed our Speak
Up program. Oh and we also
heard at our YAG’s how Care to 21
The ACT team is also really excited to have welcomed Melissa to the team.
can be done best for young
Melissa joins us with a heap of experience and excitement to work alongside
people and what a ‘Youth Foyer’
our amazing ACT members. What a year 2024 is going to be!
is and how they are providing
supported and empowering
alternative living arrangements
for young people.
much fun!
We had lizards and snakes, DJ Charly, Rapper
Riley P, a photobooth, an art table and a
performance by some of our clubCREATE
Members and much more!
In the New Year, we held a Youth Advisory
Group at Darwin Ice-Skating, the coolest place
in town! Our awesome clubCREATE members
got to test their ice-skating skills and teach
CREATE staff, Tenneil and Jesse, a thing or two
on how to ice-skate – we both think we’ll stick
to organising fun programs for you all!
Recently, we held Speak Up 1, 2 and 3 – but not
to worry if you missed out, there will be more
programs soon and an exciting Sibling
Connection Event in the coming weeks, so
watch this space!
Brisbane wrapped up the 2023 year with a bang! In October, the Connection Event
at Wynnum beach, in partnership with Sails at Bayside, saw 19 young individuals
enjoying kayaking and catamaran trips. One Young Consultant said, “We come to
this event every year and it is always run so well by CREATE staff and volunteers.”
November kicked off with a fun Transition to Adulthood Month launch in
partnership with YFS, featuring special guests like Principal Commissioner Luke
Twyford and Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers. The day was filled with music, fun,
and even dunking, making it an unforgettable experience.
December brought festive cheer with a Wet and Wild Christmas party, bringing
together over 77 children and young people with care experience, creating lasting
memories.
Meet Jesse, our new Program
Facilitator!
“Hi everyone, my name is Jesse! I have been
with CREATE for a few months now and
some of you may have seen me around. I am
a Program Facilitator and I am so excited to
meet more of you and hang out at our
programs! I love getting to know each young
person and the things that make them
unique. Some things I love are the outdoors,
adventures and sport. So if you want to talk
about camping, hidden gems, crazy hikes,
or have a competitive game of something,
I’m your girl!”
We finished off the year on an empowering note, with Speak Up (SUP) level 1 and
2 at Visible Ink in Fortitude Valley. Young participants, initially shy, transformed
into confident advocates. As one young person shared, “I started off shy and
quiet, and by the end of day 2, I agreed to come to a Ministerial Round Table to
talk about my residential care experience and make some significant changes to
the care system!”
SA ROUND UP
What’s been happening?
WA ROUND UP
What’s been happening?
The CREATE South Australian team has been buzzing with activity leading up to
Christmas! Our goal was to visit and present all the amazing work we are doing
alongside our young people at all Department of Child Protection (DCP) offices
in the metropolitan area of Adelaide, and we’ve nearly accomplished it – with just
two left on our list for 2024.
In November, we joined five fantastic Young Consultants at the DCP Symposium
at the Adelaide Oval. The event gathered carers, parents, sector workers, and
children and young people from out-of-home care to discuss important topics in
the out-of-home care sector. Minister for Child Protection, Katrine Hildyard, has
committed to making this an annual event. How cool is that!
Listening to valuable feedback from young people, we created the ‘Calming
Connection Event’. This event, held at the inclusive ‘We Rock the Spectrum’ Play
Centre in Kilkenny, caters specifically to children and young people with sensory
needs. It was a hit, and we’re making it an annual tradition to ensure everyone
feels included.
Also in December, we hosted our thrilling
'Big Wedgie' Connection Event at West
Beach. Over 100 enthusiastic children, young
people, and their carers joined us, along with
partners like Key Assets, Lutheran Care, and
Connecting Foster and Kinship Carers.
Starting 2024 on a high note, we ran a Speak
Up Program at Carclew House Youth Arts
Space in January. Special thanks to Carclew
for providing us with this magical venue,
often likened to 'Hogwarts.' We're hopeful
for more collaborations with Carclew in the
future.
As the new year began, we bid a fond
farewell to our dear teammate Kimberley,
who secured a full-time position in
education. Wishing Kim the best, she'll be
missed by the team and the children and
young people. Here's to hoping we'll see her
at future CREATE events!
CREATE in WA have had so much fun over the past few months getting to know
young people across all of our programs and events. We loved celebrating World
Care Day with young people in Northam, Youth Week up in the Pilbara, and
meeting so many families at multiple connection events in metro Perth!
We also heard from young people about things that are affecting them in care
through our monthly Youth Advisory Groups, learned new skills through the
CREATE Your Future program, and discussed how to advocate for change at
Speak Up training. Thank you to everyone who joined us for these programs!
We welcomed Emily to the team
as a program facilitator, and also
welcomed Leanne as our very first
intern! It has been great to have a
full office, especially to help
prepare for the 2024 Voices In
Action conference.
Thanks to support from the WA
Department of Communities, we
were able to send 10 young people
from WA to attend the conference
in Adelaide, where they spent 4
days workshopping and
collaborating ways to improve
the care system with other young
people from around the country.
We are very proud of everyone
who attended – go team WA!
We are looking forward to
connecting with more young
people in the second half of this
year, and would love to hear from
you if you have suggestions or
ideas for our next event!
VIC ROUND UP
What’s been happening?
TAS ROUND UP
What’s been happening?
Exciting news from the Victorian team! We’ve got some new members on our
team, and that means we’ve been super busy. We’ve teamed up with cool groups
like HoMie, Orygen, Rapid Relief, and RMIT for fun projects. Plus, we’ve added
awesome members to our Youth Expert Advisory Group (YEAG).
We recently had a big celebration at TGI Fridays to thank our team for working
hard all year. We also made sure some friends from different parts of Victoria
could join us. It was a blast!
It’s been super busy here in Tasmania and we have so much planned for you in the next
few months.
During our December Youth Advisory Group we chatted about the Tasmanian
Commissioner for Children and Young People’s recent report ‘A place at the table’ which
is about the new case management model. Check out more info on this report here.
A huge shout out to Young Consultants Nikita, Lara and Tatum who
participated in worker training with a large group of Child Safety
Officers (CSO’s) in December. These incredible Young Consultants
shared their views on what makes a great CSO and how they can
build relationships with young people. If you’re keen to join us at
Case Worker Training, get in touch!
Read the
report
Our Christmas party was at Geelong
Adventure Park. Despite some tricky
weather, we had water slides, a yummy
BBQ lunch, and even Santa dropped by
with treats for everyone. Thanks to those
who came and hung out with us!
Guess what? Our Ministerial Youth
Advisory Group (MYAG) is back! We’re
excited to restart this project where our
awesome CREATE Young Consultants
meet and share ideas with the Minister
for Children and Disability.
Our team has planned lots of fun events for the coming year. We’ll have regular
Youth Advisory Groups, Speak Ups, and CREATE Your Future workshops. We
can’t wait to see you at these events!
We closed out 2023 with our Christmas party at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, as a
joint celebration with the lovely team at FKAT! Huge shout out to the Rapid Relief crew
for putting on a BBQ, and to all of the young people and families who came along and
shared in the fun; feeding kangaroos, getting up close with Tassie devils and other
wildlife, and even having their photos taken with our very special guest- Santa!
During January, the TAS team and our Operations Manager Tameika, were lucky
enough to attend the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centres (TAC’s) Putalina festival. We were
delighted to see several clubCREATE members enjoying the event!
Our January CREATE Your Future workshop was a success, providing a safe space for
the group to discuss healthy relationships and how to handle conflict. The group were
able to safely share some of their own experiences, as well as act out some different
ways of responding to different scenarios, with some Oscar worthy performances! We
finished off the workshop with a local artist providing a spray-paint galaxy art session.
It was lovely to see the group praise each other’s work and feel proud of their own
creations!
Keep your eyes open and make sure your details are up to date to not miss the
upcoming Connection Event in Hobart during April!
