THE DANISH
RIVIERA
Since the end of the 19th century, when fresh air was issued on prescription and
bathing suits would extend below the knee, generation after generation have
sought the very special atmosphere unique to the coast of North Zealand, also
known as The Danish Riviera. Small moments are big here, and memories are
created over raised glasses at the lunch table. People in bathrobes stroll down
to the beach, a cup of coffee awaits you, and life is great.
The seaside towns each have their very own identity. At the charming
beach hotels, a part af Danish cultural heritage, you will feel pampered
and you feel pampered and enjoy "the good life."
The Danish Riviera is for everyone - and here's plenty of room and time for
relaxing in the dunes at some of the finest Danish beaches or go discover
the raw nature and the small and charming historical fishing villages.
RÅGELEJE BEACH
06 THE DANISH RIVIERA
THE DANISH RIVIERA 07

LISELEJE
The town of Liseleje, with its half-timbered
houses and hollyhocks, is located near
Tisvilde Hegn. Near the village center,
you’ll find the beach with disabled-friendly
access to the waterfront. To the East
are two of North Zealand's most remote
beaches: Lille Kulgab and the clothingoptional
beach Stængehus, both have fine
dunes and ready to dive in water.
RÅGELEJE
Rågeleje Beach looks like a
scene from ‘Fawlty Towers' with
its striped beach houses , and
the seaside promenade is perfect
for a stroll along the coast
with loved ones. Enjoy a sunset
view from the beach or from
the top of the grassy, heathercovered
hills of Heatherhill.
When the wind is just right, the
beach is popular with kite- and
windsurfers.
BEACHES
TAKE A DIP
IN THE SEA
HUNDESTED
Just a stone's throw from the town
and harbour of Hundested, you'll
find the Trekanten - a 300-meterlong
sandy beach. Enjoy the view of
Isefjord and the town of Rørvig to the
West. The beach is disability-friendly
with accessible restrooms and a ramp
all the way down to the water.
It is no coincidence that the coast of North Zealand is also
called 'The Danish Riviera'. Along the coastline between Lynæs
and Nivå, 70 kms long, you will find a string of sandy beaches,
promenades and seaside villages, that you just have to
experience. So pack your towel and set course for the beach..
LYNÆS
About 2 km from Hundested
you will find the small
the small village of Lynæs
Harbour. You can get to the
swimming area via the jetty
at the harbor but if you're
more drawn to having sand
between your toes, you'll find
the beach with child-friendly
shallow water right next to the
harbour. Rent kayaks and SUP
boards at Lynæs Surfcenter.
TISVILDELEJE
Tisvildeleje's unique hip
seaside atmosphere is the reason
why the town and beach
have attracted the big city's
bohemians for generations.
Life is lived on the beach, in
the beach hotels and summer
houses, and the town is full of
charm, history and attractions.
On the beach, you can see the
small colourful beach houses
from the 20th century, and Tisvilde
Hegn offers experiences
in serene nature.
SEASIDE TOWNS,
SURFING,
BOHEME AND
A MAGICAL LIGHT
It's all on the north coast
When the sun shines and the sky is bright,
there is no better place to be than in one
of the charming towns on the north coast
of North Zealand. This area has soul, life,
peace and ambience.
In Tisvildeleje, life is slow. For decades,
generations have gathered for a swim in
the sea, a drink, or to dance on bare feet
in the sunset.
If you dream of coming to a traditional
Danish beach town and go visit romantic
Liseleje sunbathing in the dunes, walk along
the beach or through the heathlands at
Melby Common.
Hundested will impress you with its
fantastic combination of culture, food and
maritime feel.
The raw and authentic area has a very
magical light, due to its proximity to the
sea, to the fjord and the lake. It's a light
that you won't find in many other places
in the country.
Only 2 km further to the west, you'll find the
fishing village of Lynæs with activities for
both young and old. Lynæs has something
for all water lovers, music lovers and for
those who love an ambience out of the
ordinary.
YOUR GUIDE TO HUNDESTED
The Culture
A harbour
town full
of history
Hundested is something of its own: a combination of inspiring culture, nature
and a vibrant harbour, where the fishing boats from early morning land the
catch of the day accompanied by the seagulls' loud screeching. Hundested
is full of life all year round – in the streets, and in the shops. Out in nature you
can enjoy the calm under the stars. There are experiences for all ages here.
Hundested - a raw and authentic town that goes strait to your heart.
KNUD RASMUSSEN´S HOUSE
You cannot visit Hundested without visiting polar explorer Knud
Rasmussen's House, famous for his Greenland expeditions. The
house with its thatched roof was built in 1917 and has functioned
as a museum since 1939. The house is situated in a large nature area
overlooking the Kattegat and has far as possible, been perserved in its
original state. There is a small shop in the museum with souvenirs and
books about Knud Rasmussen. It is also worthwhile to slip down to
the port to check it out. Hundested Sandsculpture Park is an attraction
where sculptors create art from the golden grains of sand. If you drive
east from Hundested and park your car, you can visit the old fishing village
Kikhavn, where the yellow and whitewashed houses are preserved
as they were 200 years ago.
The Nature
Coast trail Route 47 from Knud Rasmussen’s House to Kikhavn. If you are up
for a more challenging walk, take the popular Halsnino route, which twists
and turns for 53 km through Halsnæs from Hundested to Strø Hills.
All in all, Hundested and its surroundings are ideal for both
Hundested Sand Sculpture Park
From May 17th to October 20th 2024, the
Hundested Sand Sculpture Park will once again
open at the harbour in Hundested with sand
sculpture art shaped by artists from all over the
world, bringing joy to both the sculptors
and visitors of all ages.
Hundested Sand Sculpture Park began
with the desire to create an attraction,
that would bring life to the local harbour.
It became a huge success, and
since its beginning, more than 700.000
people have left their footprints in the
sand around the sand sculptures of
the park, and this year promises yet
another great program.
Unleash your creativity
Of course, you can admire the artists' masterpieces, but why not give it
a go yourself ? In the children's area, the whole family can try shaping,
painting and treasure hunting.
When it's time for a break, you can enjoy a packed picnic basket
at one of the many indoor and outdoor spaces, or you
can stop by the cosy Café Skipperstuen, for various
refreshments.
A LOCAL VOICE
from Hundested
I can't help wonder why North Zealand
is not so well known for …
… the amazing beaches. But also,
the light up here – it's very special and
probably the thing, I love the most.
The best meal I had in
North Zealand was …
… at Torup Spisehus. They used some
ingredients, primarily vegetarian,
that I hadn't tried before.
I always return here ...
…pretending to be a tourist.
Then we drive around and
experience our own region.
2024 THEME
FAITH AND
SUPERSTITION
Everything is possible for those who believe.
Throughout history, humans have always had
faith and superstition as a guidance in life, and
have told stories of wisdom and morality around
the campfire, on the sailing ships and on the big
screen. We seek a social bond around values
that can give us peace and direction. For the
thirteenth year in a row, the Sand Sculpture
Park will tell us even more stories. Will the
stories entail some golden truths for the whole
of humanity? Come and experience the worldfamous
sand sculptors as they portray faith and
superstition in the golden grains of sand.
Where animals roam free
Tothaven
Where the intersect roads to Kikhavn, Torup
and Hundested meets, you will find a thatched
farmhouse from 1796. Jakob, Pernille and their
two children live here, and they have run
Tothaven visiting farm since 2018. Tothaven is a
sanctuary for animals and families with children,
with a café, a dairy and a farm shop.
”We wanted to create a down-to-earth place, where
there's room for close encounters and soft
education. A place that is relevant, where
families can get a special experience that they will
always remember.”
”Nowadays, kids rarely have grandparents who
live in the countryside. Often, they don't know what
it means to keep animals on a farm, and perhaps they
haven't experienced being this close to farm animals before.
They can try that here," Pernille continues.
During the five years that the family has lived on the farm, Tothaven has
grown. One pony turned into seven. Three dairy goats became 24. And then
came along the dogs, the cats, the rabbits, the ducks, the turkeys, the cattle,
the sheep and a lot of baby animals.
At the picket fence the donkeys, Tom, Knut and Marie, along with the small
kunekune piglets, Uffe and Lasse bid you welcome.
At Tothaven visitor´s farm, you can make friends with the animals, pet the
pigs, cuddle baby rabbits and kittens and go for a ride on one of the farm
ponies.
A different family experience
Many families make it a tradition to visit Tothaven every year. ”A lot of
activities for kids, like water parks and theme parks, are very intense and
high energy and calls for overstimulation,” says Jakob.
'Hygge' and delights
When at Tothaven, don't miss out on tasting the farm's dairy products – the
silky smooth goat's yoghurt, the fresh cream cheese, and the firm goat´s
cheese called ’The Evening sun at Kikhavn’. Or try the ice creams, made
with the farm's own eggs and flavoured with homegrown
plums and rhubarb. In the café and in the
courtyard with fig trees and hollyhocks,
you can get coffee, cake and the handmade
goat's milk ice cream, and in the
charming café garden, there is often
live music.
Before leaving Tothaven, drop by the
farm shop and bring some eggs or one
of the award-winning goat's cheeses with
you. They taste the way that good memories
should taste.
At the end of Nordre Beddingsvej, where the fjord meets the quayside, Bendix Copenhagen and
Backhaus Brown invite you into a world of gold and glass.
“Glass is our life and our shared passion. Nature is our source of inspiration in everything we do, and a dream
came true when in 2008 we opened a new glass studio at Hundested Harbour. Backhaus Brown’s location enriches
us with daily inspiration in the creation of unique and innovative glass design and the fjord and the volatility of
light align beautifully with the unpredictability of glass.” Andrew Brown & Nanna Backhaus Brown
At Bendix Copenhagen, we work to create a whole – a unique atmosphere of enthusiasm for great raw materials
and craftsmanship of the highest quality, as well as visual aesthetics and design. Our workshop is located by
the old harbor bed at Hundested Harbour, a unique and authentic environment which is characterized by art, marina,
industry, restaurants and, not least, nature. The ocean just outside our windows, in the finest way complements
our jewellery and our work.
Winter in Lynæs
“Our ambition is to make the Surfcenter a place that is cool throughout the
whole year – also in the wintertime. That is why our sauna and Foodbar are
open all year round. You can come in and warm up after winter bathing or
meet up for a great meal, when the wind rushes”, says Johan.
Life in the small fishing village
Lynæs is located south of Hundested and sheltered by the high cliffs at the
entrance to Isefjord. The fishing village is one of Denmark's oldest, and thousands
of yachts dock at the marina.
Lots of experiences for the whole family await in Lynæs. By the harbour there
are restaurants, fish shops and an ice cream parlour, and you will find both a
playground and a bathing jetty for children as well as barbecue areas, harbour
baths and two shelters with fire pits, free of charge to use. During the summer,
there are various activities and concerts – for instance 'Live in Lynæs', with
live music on selected Fridays.
If you venture out onto the south-western edge of the Halsnæs peninsula, you’ll
not only find a small and quaint fishing village – you’ve also reached a destination
for all who love water activities, great music, and a very special atmosphere. Lynæs
Surfcenter attracts a vast group; families with children of all ages, surfers carrying their
boards with large grins on their faces, as well as a couple on their way to sleep in a
surfshack. You see groups of friends in the sauna while others hang out in the bar.
The twin brothers Jeppe and Johan Ingversen wanted to create a place
where the community could flourish in a local setting. That's why 10 years
ago they opened Lynæs Surfcenter, which today has become a refuge for
everyone who wants to feel their pulse or wants to gear completely down.
A place where everyone feels welcome – locals and tourists, people who
work, and people on holiday.
A strong sense of community
Before the surfcenter was built, Jeppe and Johan's father had a grocery
store on the same address. When the business closed, the village also lost a
gathering place. This made it even more important for the brothers to drive
that same sense of community, and today both locals,
tourists and a large working community have their daily routine at their place.
"That's one of the things, we're most proud of; that we've recreated that
sense of community, which the store once represented. That people meet
naturally, and there’s a sense of togetherness and relation between all the
people who come here. says Johan.
Jeppe adds: "It's about atmosphere - and about being together. Guests should
have a good time, with great food at the beach bar, lots of options for hanging out
together on a kayak trip or for a whole weekend in one of our cool tenthouses.”
The onshore wind. and the shallow water at the beach make Lynæs a popular
place - one of Denmark's best surf spots with both kitesurfing, windsurfing,
SUP and kayaking.
THE HALSNINO
on soft surface
The route has a lot of signposts, but it’s advisable
to use an app or a map (which you can
purchase at visitnordsjaelland.dk).
The route is linear, so you can also choose to
use public transport for parts of your walk. For
instance, start the route by taking the train
from Hundested or Grimstrup Station
or walk from the station in Ølsted,
HIKING
THE
HALSNINO
The hiking route Halsnino, has... quickly become a very popular 'nino'.
Maybe because of its amazing scenery, the varied landscape or just
because it's easy to jump straight on to the route directly from the
train? In any case, the Halsnino is a hike out of the ordinary. The
Halsnino is named after the municipality of Halsnæs through which
it winds its way – from Hundested in the west to Arrenakke in the
north, to Denmark’s largest lake, Arresø, and its woodland shores in
the east, and from there, south to Grimstrup at the foot of Strø Bjerge.
A varied route
The 51.5 km signposted route has it all: moraine hills, cliffs, beaches,
woodlands, meadows, lake shores, Bronze Age mounds, marshes,
craters and land stretches.
The Halsnino offers you a full variety in nature and landscape, flora
and fauna and last, but not least, peace and quiet. You can do walk
in one go, grab an overnight stay on the way, or do it in stages over
several weekends.
kids with you on flat, wider paths, North Zealand has it all. Here are
just a few of the best bicycling routes to match your needs.
For the explorer
you through Grib skov Forest. Experience the UNESCO World Heritage
listed landscape, Frederiksborg Castle, Ottevejs krydset, an eight-way
the Great Deer Park (Store Dyrehave), past the Island of Imagination
( Fantasiens Ø) and the Baroque Garden at Frederiksborg Castle.
The highlight of the ride is Kongestenen with its compass stone,
where you can rest and dive into history.
YOUR GUIDE TO GILLELEJE
The fishing village
at the top
Follow the narrow and winding hilly streets from the old town of
Gilleleje down to the harbour. Here you feel the pulse of this charming
fishing village, with the sound of the masts rattling in the wind and the
screeching of seagulls overhead. Fishmongers write down the catch
of the day on their signs, and the old harbour buildings have been
converted into cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy life and a
great meal. The harbour is the pulsating heart of Gilleleje.
NATURE
If you want to quiz yourself through the wilderness, try the new attraction, the
Gilleleje Maze. Gilleleje Town is a great starting point for many hiking and
bicycle routes. For example, try taking the path, Gilbjergstien, up to the highest
point in Gilleleje, where you can see all the way to Sweden on a clear day. You
can also try the interactive 12 km walking route ’Kirkegaard by Nature,' with
an app, that guides you through the route by asking some of life's big questions.
The town also offers the chance to simply laze on the beach. The best beaches
are just east and west of the harbour, and so a good dip in the sea is always
nearby. At Veststranden and at Østmolen, you can relax on your beach
blanket or just jump straight in the water from the jetty. Bringing the kids? Be
sure to visit the playground, Stejlepladsen with its swings, climbing frame,
sandbox, and more more, in the middle of the harbour.
YOU COULD ALSO
Be lucky enough to spot a seal from the coast at Nakkehoved
The old fishing village is also full of great stories and plenty of seaside
fishermen among each other – and at the harbour, you can
experience everything that makes Gilleleje so special.
A LOCAL VOICE
I wonder why North Zealand is not
more famous for ...
… its smaller forests! We love going for walks
around Græsted in Aggebo Hegn and Valby
Hegn. There is always something new to
see here, in every season of the year.
My best meal in North Zealand was ...
… when we bought fresh fish at Gilleleje
Harbour. If you get there early enough,
you can buy the fish straight
from the fishing boats.
I always return to…
SCULPTURES
IN RAW NATURE
”In the summer of 1916, we took long
bike rides through North Zealand
and one day, we came upon a giant
hill. In the middle of smiling, summery
Denmark it stood out like a harsh
Siberia... This was the place"
In his autobiography "Towards
the Light," Rudolph Tegner
describes how he found the
land the museum is built on.
RUDOLPH TEGNER' MUSEUM & STATUE PARK
Rusland, as the area around Dronningmølle is called, is a fantastic and unusual
landscape. It is also where the sculptor, Rudolph Tegner (1873-1950), placed his
museum and its surrounding statue park. Visit the museum in the park and be
inspired by the combination of art and its unique raw nature.
An extraordinary museum
An octagonal room opens up like a cathedral 11 meters
high to the ceiling, and where you can experience 300 of
Rudolph Tegner's poetic and masculine sculptures in
plast, clay, marble and bronze. The museum provides
a valuable insight into the sculptor's collected works
in terms of symbolism, vitalism and classicism.
Experience the statue park
Outside, in the park, you will find 14 bronze
statues in perfect unison with the
changing seasons, the heather hills and
the skies, and in the summer, sheep
graze between the statues. Kids can go
on an art treasure hunt, climb trees or
learn how to draw.
Here, the technology of the past
is combined with the present
and the future.
You can also stop by the Øresund
Aquarium, where fish from the
Øresund and Kattegat play the
starring role. There are no tropical
OPENING
HOURS
Welcome to the largest
renaissance complex
in the Nordic region
Frederiksborg Castle
is open every day
all year.
FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE AND
THE MUSEUM OF NATIONAL HISTORY
Frederiksborg Castle is located in the centre of Hillerød. It used to serve
as a favorite residence and refuge outside Copenhagen for many
kings in the past. The kings would come here to hunt in the woods
of Gribskov forest and throw grand balls at the castle – which is precisely why
the King's Road (Kongevejen) was built from Copenhagen to Hillerød, so the
royals could travel straight from their everyday life and
seek recreation at Frederiksborg.
The castle stands tall in the centre of a
the castle lake, and right in the middle
of Hillerød. It is surrounded by a
landscaped, baroque garden,
that includes King Frederik II's
bathhouse castle from 1580
and the Norwegian-inspired
cottage of Countess Danner,
wife of King Frederik VII. The
look of the castle changes
with the weather. On sunny
days, the castle is reflected
in the lake, while on foggy
days, you can only just make
out the spire and masonry. And
on a snowy day, the castle looks like
something out of a fairytale.
DENMARK'S
MOST BEAUTIFUL
NAUTICAL MILE
If you board The Little Ferry on the
Castle Lake, you have views of the
town, the castle, and the beautiful
baroque garden from the middle of the
lake. The ferry sails between Torvet,
the town square, and Frederiksborg
Castle every half hour
from spring to autumn.
Thousands of items in more than 10.000 m2
The Audience Chamber and the Knight's Hall
(Riddersalen) are captivating, and The Gottorp
Celestial Globel (Den Gottorpske
Himmelglobus), the Flora Danica porcelain
and 'Jammers Minde' (A Memory of
Lament), the original work of Leonora
Christina are among the thousands of
precious objects in the museum.
Frederiksborg Castle Chapel, where the
absolute kings were anointed function
to this day as The Chapel of the Royal
Danish orders of Knighthood. From the
gallery corridor you can spot the coats
of arms of The Knights order of the
Elephants and the Grand Cross.
An outddoor complex on three islets
As you walk towards the complex from the
pedestrian street, you reach the buildings in
Staldgade from Frederik II’s Frederiksborg.
From there you're led through the Prison Gate to
the Neptune Fountain in the outer castle courtyard
where you'll see King Christian IV’s grand castle from
the early 17th century. In the inner castle courtyard,
you can study at the architecture and the marble gallery
of the King's Wing up close.
Step inside the history of Denmark
Inside the walls of Frederiksborg Castle, you'll find
The Museum of National History that includes the
Portrait Gallery. Hundreds of portraits show the
faces of significant people throughout the
history of Denmark, and the paintings tell
the story about major national events.
Throughout the year, there are changing
special exhibitions of portrait art and
Danish history as well as the history
and architecture of castle on display
– and during holiday breaks, there
are special activities for children.
Frederiksborg Castle is everything
you can possibly
imagine – an impressive
building, where you are
able to see a significant
Renowned
restaurant
opens
at the castle
Rabarbergaarden in
Holløse is an organically
run holistic farm-totable
restaurant. It has been
run by entrepreneurs Louise og
Thomas Køster since 2005.
The two owners focus on producing the best vegetables,
raising great meat and acquiring deliciously
fresh fish without putting too much pressure on the
planet's limited resources.
In 2024, they are bringing their vision to Frederiksborg
Castle in Hillerød and giving you the opportunity to
combine a museum visit with really great food.
A dining experience with atmosphere
The building that Rabarbergaarden is moving into was
built around the year 1600 as a carriage gate with a
small stable. Later, it was the residence for the county
clerk, and since 1971, it has been an inn.
With great affection for the history of the building,
the space have been newly refurbished with focus on
great craftmanship when it comes to the selection of
materials and interior
design, as well as
outside.
Everything from the design to the
plants reflect the joy of nature and the
changing seasons.
In the restaurant space, where everything is furnished
with respect for both the past and the present, you
will enjoy an experience that goes beyond the delicious
food.
The nature of North Zealand on your plate
The farm at Rabarbergaarden in Holløse supplies
ingredients to both restaurants, and nothing goes to
waste. Even the smallest radishes and shoots can be
used in a salad. This sense of respect for the
produce you experience at the restaurants in both
Holløse and Hillerød, where the gastronomical ambitions
and the ecological mindset is embedded in the
menu, enriched by the nature of North Zealand.
You can still visit Rabarbergaarden's self-sufficiant
farm in Holløse and stop by the bakery and the shop.
With a strong focus on organic farming and their own agricultural production,
Raberbergaarden (The Rhubarb Farm) in Holløse serves food that tastes
of the very nature that grows its produce. From 2024, visitors at
Frederiksborg Castle can enjoy the same great tasting experience
when Rabarbergaarden expands and moves into the largest
Renaissance complex in the Nordic region.
A national park for
nature and culture lovers
There is plenty of beautiful nature to explore in
North Zealand. Two of the main nature experiences
include the National Park Royal North Zealand and the
Par Force Hunting Landscape, which has been listed
as a UNESCO World Heritage.
In the national park, you may spot the white-tailed eagle
soaring above the trees in Gribskov, find the tracks of
the beavers by the country's largest lake, Arresø, or see
the heather bloom at Melby Common.
The Par Force Hunting Landscape is a unique and wellpreserved
landscape with symmetrical lines - consisting
of the woods of Gribskov, Store Dyrehave (the Great
Deer Park) by Hillerød as well as Jægersborg Hegn
and Jægersborg Dyrehave (Jægersborg Deerpark).
The landscape was designed in the late 1600s by King
Christian V, and is ideal for walking, cycling and riding.
Experience the National Park
Get inspired for three trips where you can follow the
traces of our ancestors with copper-clad castle towers,
old castle walls, and heavy dolmen stones, finding clear
signs of the rulers' love for North Zealand, for example,
at Asserbo Castle Ruins and Esrum Abbey.
TRIPS
Visit the ruins of the medieval
castle Gurre Castle near
Elsinore. The castle had its heyday
in the 13th century and
is one of Denmark's important
historical monuments.
Take the 10 km scenic trip
around Gurre Lake, surrounded
by forest and open fields.
Visit Arrenæs by
Frederiksværk, and get close to
the beavers at Dronningholm
Bog. From the observation
area, you can see the
beavers' nest and study
how these industrious
animals have built
2
their living area using
logs, branches and
twigs. To be able to see
Europe's biggest rodent,
(it can weigh up to 30 kg,)
arm yourself with patience
as they are rather shy
creatures by nature.
3Settle down with a thermos,
binoculars, and a lot of
patience and find your way
to the observation tower at
Tisvilde Hegn. Here you'll
have a good view of a
clearing in the dark
coniferous forest and you
may be lucky enough to
spot some of the many
animals such as red deer and
fallow deer, which are active in
the very early morning hours and
when the sun is setting.
ROY'S TIPS FOR A
GREAT DINNER
Try the ribeye steak at Café
KiK in Hillerød, and if you want
the best burger in Zealand,
check out Café Maku
in Asserbo.
The guests at Danhostel in Hillerød greet
each other in both Danish, English, German
and French, the atmosphere is kind and
professional – everything is doable. A majestic
cat lies totally totally unbothered by the hustle
and bustle, in the reception, and behind the
counter you will find the hotel manager, Roy
Kappenberger.
Roy's passion has always been hotels, so after graduating in 1984, he moved
to Switzerland to study at the hotelier school. He quickly landed his first
job at a hotel in Bern, and from there, his career took off with several
international positions.
With jobs all over the world, Roy has a lot of experience in creating great
service for different types of guests: ”We had work to do around the clock! It
was an amazing period abroad, which unfortunately came to an end when
Corona shut down the entire world. I landed in a completely empty Copenhagen
Airport, and there was never so little need for a hotel manager."
Man of
the world goes
to Danhostel
in Hillerød
Finding a way back home
Roy spent a summer reflecting on his 57 years in the industry and came
across a job advertisement: ”By chance I discovered, that Danhostel was
looking for a manager, and North Zealand has been my focal point since
I was very young. So this job in the middle of the nature was the exact
thing I was looking for. The summer in my country house had made me
realize that Michelin dinners should be replaced by something completely
different now, and I got the position in the heart of North Zealand.”
Surrounded by nature, full of possibilities
Danhostel is located in scenic nature, right next to Store Dyrehave, and it
offeres plenty of experiences such as pétanque, a nature playground and
indoor ping-pong, which makes it ideal for both families with children,
friends and couples.
When guests asks Roy what they should experience nearby, he highligts
the Par Force Hunting Landscape and all the castles that encapsulate the
essence of North Zealand as well as the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
and Copenhagen, all within 3o minutes' driving distance of his beloved
Danhostel in Hillerød.
How to choose an overnight stay
After 30 years in the industry, Roy's criteria for choosing accomodation is
simple: location and charm. Whether it's a one-star or a five-star hotel, the
most important thing is that the place has character. You have to enjoy
staying there, and it should feel wonderful to return to after a day filled
with experiences.
A charming
palace town
The main attraction in Fredensborg is Fredensborg Palace. The beautiful
great international esteem with its European Heritage Award. Be sure to visit The
Valley of the Norsemen (Nordmandsdalen), a special valley in the gardens. which
feature seventy sandstone statues of Norwegian and Faroese farmers and fishermen.
If the regent is residing at the palace, there is a daily change of guards at noon,
Explore the palace town: take the time visiting the small shops, visit the beautiful
palace gardens, and enjoy nature by boat on Esrum Lake. During the summer,
Fredensborg Palace opens its doors to the public and gives you the opportunity
of Denmark
FREDENSBORG PALACE
The history behind the name
King Frederik IV gave the white
and elegant baroque palace its
name, Fredensborg - or Palace of
Peace – to commemorate the end
of The Great Northern War in 1720..
The palace was gradually expanded
during the following decades but
still stands as the architectual
whole, intended by the architect J.C
Krieger, who designed the palatial
complex in the years 1720-1726.
Back then, the palace included a
small domed main castle as well as
an octagonal castle yard.
The main attraction in the town of Fredensborg
is the beautiful Fredensborg Palace.
Take a walk in the stunning baroque garden,
which has won ‘The European Heritage
Award,’ for its extensive restoration and is an
important part of Danish cultural heritage.
The 300-year-old baroque palace
was originally built as King Frederik
IV’s hunting and leisure
retreat and opened its doors
on the King’s birthday in
1722.
Fredensborg Palace is
located in the heart of
the city, and it is clear
to see how the town has
spread outwards from
the palace. The palace
has never suffered any
significant fires and stands
almost exactly as it was
built 300 years ago, perhaps
because the baker and the
blacksmith were quickly moved
out of the palace grounds in order
to reduce the fire hazard.
The Queen's Residence
Fredensborg Palace is the preferred residence
of H.M Queen Margrethe II for most of the
year, and the citizens of Fredenborg always mark H.M.
Queen Margrethe II return to the palace with an annual torchlight
procession in the early spring.
The palace is often the main setting for big events in the royal family,
such as weddings, confirmations, and birthday parties. Official state
visit receptions also take place and it is traditional that heads of state
to sign one of the palace’s glass windows with a diamond.
Historical Garden Complex
When visiting the palace, be sure to leave enough time to take a long
stroll through the beautiful Fredensborg Palace Gardens. The garden
complex is one of Denmark’s largest historical baroque gardens.
It dates back to 1759-1769, where the sculptor Johannes
Wiedewelt created a row of statutes for the
breathtaking garden avenue, Brede Allé.
On the occasion of H.M. Queen
Margrethe II 50th jubilee in 2022,
Fredensborg received a donation
of one million DKK from the
A.P Møller Foundation, for
the renovation of the gardens.
The donation went
into restoring the Hermitage-pavillions,
originally
erected by King Frederik
IV, and the Bridge of
Kings (Kongebroen),
which was a 60th birthday
present to the now
deceased Prince Henrik.
The bridge was unveiled
in 1996.
A unique part of the garden
complex is the Norseman’s valley,
where 70 sculptures of Norwegian
and Faroese farmers and fishermen
are depicted. The statues were a
bold choice in the time of King Frederik
V where it was tradition to erect statues of
deities in royal gardens but not of ordinary people.
Part of the palace grounds are reserved for the royal family, including
the private gardens, the orangery and the historical herb garden, which
provides fresh flowers and vegetables for the royal household. These
areas are only open to the public in on guided tours tours during the
summer. The rest of the gardens, including the finest baroque gardens
in Denmark, are open all year round and are free to the public.
OPENING HOURS AND TOURS
The palace gardens are always open to the
public, but the palace itself as well as the
private gardens, the herb garden ande the
orangery, are also open for special tours
from July 1st to August 4th 2024.
Along Øresund
to the Royal
Palace by bike
Set out along the coast
A great place to start and end this route is in Nivå. The town is easy to reach,
and you can bring your bicycle with you on the Øresund train.
Nivå has a harbour, a beach and holds a great appeal for culture lovers. Don't
miss the Nivaagaard Collection with European Baroque, Renaissance and
Danish Golden Age art, and consider a stop at Nivaagaard Brickworks Ring
Kiln – a piece of Danish industrial history. From Strandvejen, the coastal
road, you can see the old clay pits, where in the past clay was dug for bricks
and were fired in the ring kiln. The bricks were sent to Copenhagen, where
they were used for the Grundtvig church. Today, the claypits have been transformed
into lakes and a recreational area with trails and nature playgrounds.
The route continues along the coast to Sletten Harbour, where you will find
old fishermen's houses and a charming setting.
Take a detour
Consider leaving the signposted route and drop
by Aarstiderne at Krogerup Avlsgaard in Humlebæk,
where the focus is on organic farming and
ecology. Here you can relax with a cup of coffee
and stock your bicycle basket with seasonal
vegetables. Not far from here is the Louisiana
Museum of Modern Art with a panoramic view
of Øresund. Enjoy the modern art and have
your lunch here before it's time to return to the
Queen's Route.
Head out on the Queen's Route – a 40 km long signposted cycle route
that winds along the coast of the Øresund Strait and inland to Denmark's
second largest lake, Esrum Lake, and the Royal Palace, Fredensborg.
And who knows, perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of her Majesty?
Visit the Palace
The next stop is Fredensborg, where you'll pass by Fredensborg Palace. If the Royal
Life Guards are in the sentry boxes, the Queen is at the palace. Get off your bike,
go for a walk in the Baroque Palace Garden, see the trading village and follow the
Royal Life Guard’s Tambour Corps with pipes and drums.
Continue along the Palace Garden and Skipper Allé to Esrum Lake. Sørup, by the
lake, is a popular destination, and it's hard to resist the ice cream or food while
enjoying the view of the lake.. The tour now goes past the old mill in Karlebo and
on to Kokkedal, where you’ll see Øresund again and return to your starting point.
Now it's time for a swim as a reward for a good day in the saddle.
BEFORE JUMPING ON YOUR BICYCLE
If you follow the Queen's Route clockwise
- Nivå-Humlebæk-Fredensborg-Kokkedal
- you'll bike along the sea with a view
of Øresund. You can also just bicycle
parts of the route. The route is suitable
YOUR GUIDE TO FREDERIKSVÆRK
Culture,
gunpowder and
cannons along
the canal
When you visit Frederiksværk, which is beautifully
located between Arresø Lake and Roskilde Fjord with
canals, iconic bridges and narrow alleyways with old
houses, you will quickly feel that this place has
a story to tell about its past as Denmark's
first industrial centre.
In the first part of the 18th century, the farmers at
Arresø Lake complained that the lake flooded the
fields. Therefore, King Frederik IV saw to it that a canal
was dug, and with it came the industry that utilized
water power for production. In the 1750s, the cannon
foundry and gunpowder factory were built, and the
area got its name - named after King Frederik V. The
success attracted several industries, and companies
in Frederiksværk have been proud producers of
gunpowder, cast-iron pans, steel sheets and much
more throughout the years.
Frederiksværk – a lively town with
gunpowder and good stories.
FREDERIKSVÆRK
CULTURE
Frederiksværk is a unique place for all history
buffs, and the opportunities to delve into history
are almost inexhaustible. Many of the old industrial
buildings are still standing, and the somewhat
crude and different architecture gives the town
and its surroundings its special mark.
Gjethuset
– culture all year round
With over a hundred events a year, Gjethuset
is one of North Zealand’s largest culture centres.
For over thirty years, the old cannon foundry has
served as a venue for concerts, shows, theatre, art
and conferences. The building itself is an architectural
jewel, with thick stone walls, visible beams
and a unique atmosphere. Gjethuset is definitely
a place to visit for the whole family. Check out
Gjethuset’s programme and get inspiration for
your next cultural experience.
Gunpowder and cannon balls
At the Gunpowder Works Museum, you are taken back to the time
when the town produced gunpowder, and you can see why the work
was a dangerous occupation. The risk of explosions was huge, and
therefore the landscape has protective ramparts and tall trees
whose macabre function has been to catch fragments from
buildings and torn limbs when something went wrong. If you want
to know more, you can listen to a new and exciting podwalk that
talks about the dangerous work of producing gunpowder. The entire
gunpowder works area is an exceptionally well-preserved cultural
environment, to such an extent that in 2007, Frederiksværk was given
the status as one of Denmark's 25 finest industrial historic sites.
TAKE A
GUIDED TOUR
The Frederiks Vaerk Museum of
Industry offers guided tours and city
walks, and during the summer, there is
a free tour for children and their families
every Sunday. As something new, you
can explore the Powder Works area
for free or go on a city walk in
Frederiksværk with the
THE POWDER MUSEUM
ARSENALET
From farming to an industrial centre
Frederiksværk is Denmark's first industrial town, which grew
during the 1900s with the production of cast-iron and steel. If you
want to know more about the exciting history, you must visit the
Arsenal. This museum shows everything about Frederiksværk's
development through 250 years and introduces you to everything
that has been produced in Frederiksværk over time – from
military products such as gunpowder, bullets and bronze cannons
to civilian production of iron goods such as pots, mirrors,
wood-burning stoves and central heating boilers.
A LOCAL VOICE
from Hundested
I wonder why North Zealand
is not more known for …
… the Folkely Festival. We are now
in our third festival this year, but
I guess it can take a while before
everybody learns about the festival.
.
The best meal I ever had
in North Zealand …
… was at Restaurant
Knud in Hundested.
It is always worth a visit.
I always return to …
… North Zealand. This is my world.
