Follow<strong>in</strong>g our 2022 mission to enhance the <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> (CFF) with a focus on diversity <strong>and</strong><br />

collaboration, the <strong>2023</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> aimed to build on this foundation for further growth <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ability.<br />

Our goal was to ensure the <strong>Festival</strong>'s longevity, enabl<strong>in</strong>g it to thrive for years to come.<br />

We focused on <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g a compell<strong>in</strong>g film programme that resonates with our audience <strong>and</strong> amplifies<br />

our support for filmmakers. This year, we exp<strong>and</strong>ed the CFF Industry Day, <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g more <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>and</strong><br />

opportunities for pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. The Youth Lab grew <strong>in</strong> response to dem<strong>and</strong>, provid<strong>in</strong>g a platform for<br />

young talent to engage <strong>and</strong> learn. Moreover, we <strong>in</strong>creased our showcase <strong>of</strong> first-time filmmakers <strong>in</strong> the<br />

ShortFusion str<strong>and</strong>, present<strong>in</strong>g over 35 debut works.<br />

CFF42 was a key event for engag<strong>in</strong>g with great films, network<strong>in</strong>g with creative m<strong>in</strong>ds, <strong>and</strong> ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to the UK film <strong>in</strong>dustry, cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to balance great film selections with <strong>in</strong>dustry support.<br />

DivErsity<br />

Embrac<strong>in</strong>g diversity rema<strong>in</strong>s pivotal for the <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> (CFF) to flourish. In <strong>2023</strong>, we<br />

focused on assembl<strong>in</strong>g a truly diverse Programm<strong>in</strong>g Panel, work<strong>in</strong>g collaboratively <strong>and</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g clear<br />

diversity goals for our programme.<br />

The Programm<strong>in</strong>g Panel's <strong>in</strong>clusive approach <strong>and</strong> commitment to diversity are key achievements for<br />

CFF42. We ensured the panel was diverse <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued our commitment to a 50/50 ratio <strong>of</strong> Male,<br />

Female, <strong>and</strong> Non-B<strong>in</strong>ary filmmakers with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>Festival</strong> programme. Additionally, we set <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />

targets to <strong>in</strong>clude more films from Black <strong>and</strong> Global Majority <strong>Film</strong>makers <strong>and</strong> to highlight films with<br />

strong LGBTQI+ narratives, address<strong>in</strong>g conscious <strong>and</strong> unconscious biases <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry.

The <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>'s Youth Lab took centre stage <strong>in</strong> <strong>2023</strong>, emphasis<strong>in</strong>g education <strong>and</strong><br />

empower<strong>in</strong>g the next generation <strong>of</strong> filmmakers <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

Highlight<strong>in</strong>g its significance, the Youth Lab presents the Youth Lab Jury Award for the best feature<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Festival</strong>. This year, the programme exp<strong>and</strong>ed its reach, <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g regular film discussion<br />

groups, workshops, network<strong>in</strong>g events, <strong>and</strong> presentations by <strong>in</strong>dustry pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

The Youth Lab at the <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be a cornerstone for nurtur<strong>in</strong>g the next<br />

generation with<strong>in</strong> the film <strong>in</strong>dustry. Beyond foster<strong>in</strong>g film knowledge <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry connections,<br />

the programme significantly boosts self-confidence among participants. Over 80% <strong>of</strong> our Youth Lab<br />

alumni have transitioned <strong>in</strong>to employment or higher education <strong>in</strong> the film sector.<br />

At CFF42, this impact was underscored as our Short <strong>Film</strong> Programmer, Submissions Coord<strong>in</strong>ator, <strong>and</strong><br />

Programm<strong>in</strong>g Panel Lead were all past Youth Lab participants.<br />

Youth Lab champions <strong>in</strong>clusivity, actively seek<strong>in</strong>g participants from diverse backgrounds, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

those with disabilities, from m<strong>in</strong>ority communities, or those fac<strong>in</strong>g disadvantages.

<strong>and</strong> challenges <strong>in</strong> the UK film <strong>in</strong>dustry. Attendance <strong>and</strong> engagement saw a notable <strong>in</strong>crease, with more<br />

sign-ups <strong>and</strong> participants than the previous year, underscor<strong>in</strong>g the day's grow<strong>in</strong>g importance as a hub<br />

for network<strong>in</strong>g, collaboration, <strong>and</strong> discussion.<br />

Industry Day is the foundation <strong>of</strong> our commitment to break<strong>in</strong>g down barriers between filmmakers,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, <strong>and</strong> audiences, foster<strong>in</strong>g a productive <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>clusive environment at the <strong>Festival</strong>.<br />

With morn<strong>in</strong>g screen<strong>in</strong>gs dur<strong>in</strong>g the half-term holiday, the <strong>Cambridge</strong> Family <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> has always<br />

been a hit with both children <strong>and</strong> parents alike. We we were thrilled that , after a short break, we were<br />

able to not only br<strong>in</strong>g back the Family <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> but also make all screen<strong>in</strong>gs entirely free <strong>of</strong> charge.<br />

The <strong>Festival</strong> was enriched with craft workshops <strong>and</strong> activities, <strong>and</strong> we were especially proud to reach<br />

a broader audience than ever by partner<strong>in</strong>g with organisations to <strong>in</strong>vite groups <strong>of</strong> children from<br />

disadvantaged backgrounds to the c<strong>in</strong>ema.

At CFF42, we were delighted to award our Outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g Contribution to C<strong>in</strong>ema Award to the brilliant<br />

Asif Kapadia for his remarkable impact on the film <strong>in</strong>dustry. Kapadia's diverse body <strong>of</strong> work, which<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes the acclaimed films THE WARRIOR, DIEGO MARADONA, SENNA, AMY <strong>and</strong> CREATURE,<br />

has not only earned him BAFTAs, an Oscar, <strong>and</strong> even a Grammy but also the admiration <strong>of</strong> peers <strong>and</strong><br />

audiences worldwide. His perseverance, dedication, <strong>and</strong> ability to create pr<strong>of</strong>ound art <strong>in</strong> the face <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry barriers truly make him an <strong>in</strong>spirational figure <strong>in</strong> c<strong>in</strong>ema.<br />

Alongside receiv<strong>in</strong>g the award, Asif graciously presented four significant films, provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Festival</strong><br />

attendees with a unique opportunity to participate <strong>in</strong> a Q&A about his fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g career <strong>and</strong> delve<br />

deeper <strong>in</strong>to his c<strong>in</strong>ematic journey to date.<br />

amidst a stra<strong>in</strong>ed relationship, revisit<strong>in</strong>g her childhood to confront her desires <strong>and</strong> societal expectations.<br />

Martín's dual role as director <strong>and</strong> lead actor br<strong>in</strong>gs a genu<strong>in</strong>e exploration <strong>of</strong> female sexuality with<strong>in</strong><br />

PURE CLEAN WATER, directed by Tony Eva, w<strong>in</strong>s the Golden Punt for Best Documentary Feature,<br />

address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Cambridge</strong>'s urgent water scarcity issue.<br />

This compell<strong>in</strong>g documentary exam<strong>in</strong>es how Hobson’s Conduit, a 250-year-old watercourse, <strong>and</strong> other<br />

natural spr<strong>in</strong>gs are threatened by ris<strong>in</strong>g dem<strong>and</strong>, affect<strong>in</strong>g the River Cam <strong>and</strong> local chalk streams.<br />

Highlight<strong>in</strong>g the collective responsibility <strong>of</strong> water companies, regulators, <strong>and</strong> the community,<br />

it questions whether <strong>Cambridge</strong> can secure a susta<strong>in</strong>able water future. The film's significance was<br />

FLEDGLINGS (Pisklaki)<br />

Fledgl<strong>in</strong>gs is a stunn<strong>in</strong>gly beautiful <strong>and</strong> touch<strong>in</strong>g film that follows Zosia, Oskar, <strong>and</strong> K<strong>in</strong>ga, residents<br />

<strong>of</strong> a board<strong>in</strong>g school for visually impaired children <strong>in</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong>. We follow their daily lives as they learn<br />

to navigate the world, face challenges, <strong>and</strong> form friendships.<br />

Youth Lab Lead Abby Pollock comments on the award: "The Youth Lab Jury (part <strong>of</strong> our Youth Lab<br />

project aimed at young people between 16 <strong>and</strong> 24 years old) worked hard to decide on the award this year<br />

<strong>and</strong> were fasc<strong>in</strong>ated by the dist<strong>in</strong>ct works <strong>of</strong> all the filmmakers. The Youth Lab Jury selected Fledgl<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

because <strong>of</strong> its artistic choices <strong>and</strong> its sensitive <strong>and</strong> immersive portrayal <strong>of</strong> the experience <strong>of</strong> the children,<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g them centre stage <strong>and</strong> tell<strong>in</strong>g their stories with great empathy."
