Jewish Federation to Host
Second Annual “Federation 360”
DYNAMIC EVENT WILL GATHER HUNDREDS
TO EXPERIENCE AND CELEBRATE FEDERATION’S IMPACT
It will be an inspiring and dynamic experience as
hundreds of members of the Jewish community
gather for Jewish Federation of San Diego’s
second annual Federation 360 event, November
4 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine.
Through interactive exhibits and experiences,
the evening will bring to life Federation’s key
priorities, from building a bright Jewish future and
caring for Jews in need, to strengthening connections
with Israel and global Jewish communities, combating
antisemitism, ensuring safety and security at local
Jewish institutions and more. Federation 360 - the first
Federation event to ever be held on a Saturday evening
- will also treat guests to an impactful Havdalah service
in partnership with Shabbat San Diego, plus delicious
food and drinks alongside live entertainment.
The event is co-chaired by Jon and Lisa Pearl and Jon
Segal and Glen Brodowsky. The latter are the first LGBT
couple to serve as co-chairs of a Federation event.
“It was an honor to be asked to serve as co-chair for
this event,” Lisa Pearl shared with GB Magazine.
“Federation is doing such important work right now.
This includes funding a community security director;
training and inspiring teens, young adults, and women
through leadership and travel programs; taking care
of survivors; and playing a critical role in bringing
together partner organizations to address the most
important issues our community faces. I cannot think
of anything more exciting than helping convene 400-
plus Jewish San Diegans to celebrate and contribute to
Federation’s priorities.”
Federation 360 will
share all aspects
of Federation and
the many ways its
impact is felt across
the community.
Federation leaders
note that San
Diego Jewish life
offers something
meaningful for
everyone, and they
invite everyone to
learn about, see, and
experience those
opportunities
during
Federation 360.
The event
builds on
momentum
from
Federation’s
CommUNITY
trip to Israel
earlier this
year, in which
hundreds
of Jewish
community
members –
along with nearly all clergy leaders – toured the country,
met with dignitaries, and strengthened connections
between San Diego’s local Jewish community and sister
region, Sha’ar HaNegev.
“Glen and I had such a wonderful time on the Israel trip
that we knew we wanted to get further involved with
Federation,” shared Jon Segal. “It is a great time in our
lives to think about giving back, and serving as co-chairs
for Federation 360 is the perfect opportunity to really
jump in.”
Much of Federation’s work is done in collaboration with
other local Jewish nonprofits and national partners.
Recent
initiatives
include
bringing
together
a broad
coalition of
organizations
to support
Jews
experiencing
poverty and
increasing
security
efforts for all
local Jewish
institutions. In
recent years,
Federation has
also demonstrated
its ability to
quickly mobilize
resources and
work with
partners to
address urgent,
unexpected crises
here in San Diego
and around the
world.
“These
community-wide experiences are incredibly important,”
added Heidi Gantwerk, Federation President and
CEO. “When people learn how integral they are to our
efforts, they are inspired to be more involved, to lead,
and to contribute. Our community’s needs are great,
but the opportunities to make a real positive influence
in people’s lives are great too.”
Empowerment
The Operation For HOPE Foundation
GIVE THE GIFT OF HOPE
Joyful Moments for Three Champions
October holds deep significance
as communities across the
nation unite in their quest to end
domestic violence. This month
goes beyond raising awareness;
it underscores the harrowing
realities of domestic violence
and honors lives tragically lost to intimate partner
violence. As National Domestic Violence Awareness
Month unfolds, everyone is invited to rally behind this
cause at www.operationforhope.org. By donating or
volunteering, transformative change becomes possible.
Central and at the heart of this movement is the
Operation For HOPE Foundation. Understanding the
devastating impacts of domestic violence on families,
their mission extends beyond just financial assistance.
They envision a world where survivors transition from
the torment of being beaten, abused or assaulted by
an intimate partner or significant other to a state of
healing, empowerment and freedom.
The Operation For HOPE Foundation’s HOPE Fund
exemplifies this commitment. This fund provides
emergency financial assistance; from replacing
windows to fixing cars for transportation, it addresses
safety concerns. The HOPE Fund steps in when other
resources fall short, sometimes helping survivors flee
across state borders. It covers court fees for those
seeking to divorce their abusers. It offers services like
re-keying vehicles or homes, enhancing the security of
survivors.
16 GBSAN.COM | OCTOBER 2023
In a landscape where many funds
have restrictions, the HOPE
Fund is an indispensable lifeline.
Collaborating with domestic
violence professionals from San
Ysidro to Oceanside, they ensure
aid reaches those in need. This
aid is crucial both before and after
a survivor’s decision to leave an
abusive situation. For those in dire
circumstances, the fund provides
hotel stays. Through such efforts,
the foundation empowers survivors
to heal.
In highlighting
their
contributions,
this past July,
the Foundation
marked its 6th
Annual Caring,
Sharing &
Champagning
Fundraiser. This
event equipped
survivors and
their children
with household
essentials,
essential for their
rehabilitation
and the
establishment
of violence-free
homes. In total,
they distributed
goods valued at over $6,000.
Thank you
Enhancing its reach, the Foundation collaborates
with esteemed partners in the domestic violence
community, like YWCA of San Diego, One Safe Place,
License to Freedom, Marine & Family Services, Center
for Community Solutions and Your Safe Place. Such
partnerships elevate the impact of events, extending
benefits well beyond singular occasions.
The HOPE Fund’s influence is palpable in the
testimonials of survivors. One recounts, “After leaving
my abuser, I was financially
paralyzed. Facing overwhelming
car license registration fees, the
HOPE Fund’s assistance kept my
car functional for work and school.”
Another survivor says, “Receiving
support from the HOPE Fund
changed my life. Those divorce
papers restored my identity and,
above all, my freedom.”
At the forefront of this fight against
domestic violence are the dedicated
individuals and groups supporting
the foundation.
Special gratitude
is extended to
the sponsors,
partners, the
join the endangered species list. During the Hackathon, participants will work in
teams to find solutions and sustainable ways to combat this loss of habitats using
their critical analysis, creativity, collaboration, decision-making, and applications of
STEM in entrepreneurship.
For the first time, we are excited to expand our Hackathon to include 6th and 7th
ANDREW APPLEBY
CARRYING ON THE FAMILY LEGACY IN SAN DIEGO’S
LUXURY REAL ESTATE MARKET
Appleby Family Group
In the world of high-end luxury real estate,
Andrew Appleby stands out as a rising star.
With a passion for helping people find their
dream homes and a deep-rooted family legacy
in the industry, he has quickly made a name
for himself in San Diego’s competitive real
estate market.
Andrew’s journey into the world of luxury real estate
began at a young age, shaped by the influence of his
family. “Some of my earliest memories are attending
open houses with my Dad,” Andrew shared with
GB Magazine. “When you are in a family that
works together, every family gathering consists of
discussions about business, and I loved hearing
my Dad and my Aunt Kerry talk about different
properties and the deals they were working on.”
Coming from a family deeply entrenched in real
estate, Andrew admired the joy and fulfillment his
father and aunt found in their work. They were
able to maintain a successful career while still being
actively present in his life, attending his school
events and sports games. It was this balance of work
and family life that inspired Andrew to follow in
their footsteps and carry on the family legacy.
22 GBSAN.COM | OCTOBER 2023
As a third-generation
San Diegan, Andrew has
an innate appreciation
for the beauty of the city.
He attended college at
SMU in Dallas, Texas
and started his career in
commercial real estate in
2018. During this time,
he honed his skills in
building relationships,
understanding property
values and delivering
results for clients.
However, his heart
remained in San Diego,
and he longed to
help individuals and
families find their
perfect homes in the
city he loved.
In 2020, after heartfelt
discussions with his
father, Scott, and
aunt, Kerry, Andrew
was presented with
the opportunity he
had been eagerly
awaiting - to work
alongside them at
Appleby Family
Group. This marked
the beginning of a new chapter
in his career, one that allowed
him to combine his passion for
helping people with his deep
knowledge of San Diego’s real
estate market.
Appleby Family Group is a
legacy in itself, with a rich
history that dates back to 1985
when Mary Appleby, Scott and
Kerry’s mother, founded the
family business. The motto
“It Takes a Family” embodies
the spirit of their work,
emphasizing the importance
Appleby property in Rancho Santa Fe
It Takes a Family
AJ and Andrew with
Hayden James Appleby
of treating clients
like family and
providing hands-on
service.
What inspires
Andrew in his
career is the people
he meets and the
opportunity to help
them achieve their
real estate dreams.
He sees himself as
not just an advisor
but also a close
friend to his clients, ensuring they
receive the best possible service.
Outside of work, Andrew cherishes
his time with his family, especially
since the birth of his son, Hayden,
in February. He enjoys family walks,
golfing with friends and family, and
indulging in his love for fishing.
Moreover, Andrew remains actively
engaged in his community, serving
as the youngest advisory board
member for the Future Legends
Scholarship Foundation.
CELEBRATING LATINX EXCELLENCE IN STEM
SD2 Latinx Leaders
As the world continues to innovate and
evolve, the need for diversity in the
Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math (STEM) fields has become
increasingly apparent. At San Diego
Squared (SD2), their mission is to
empower underrepresented students to
explore careers in STEM and become tomorrow’s STEM
leaders. Recently, they celebrated Latinx excellence in
STEM through a dinner powered by Cooley. This event
brought together Latinx executives, mentors, scholars
and interns to deepen connections and highlight the
outstanding work being done in STEM by Latinx
individuals.
The dinner was a night of celebration of the
accomplishments of Latinx individuals in STEM. Cooley,
a law firm that has a commitment to diversity and
24 GBSAN.COM | OCTOBER 2023
inclusivity, hosted the dinner, which took place in June.
The event brought together participants from different
organizations, including SD2, to foster new connections
and strengthen existing ones. As participants shared their
experiences and progress in STEM fields, it was clear
that the future of STEM is in good hands with the next
generation of Latinx leaders.
At SD2, they celebrate Latinx excellence in STEM and
work towards the goal of empowering tomorrow’s
STEM leaders today. Their partnership with Cooley
exemplifies the shared commitment to diversity and
inclusivity in STEM and shows that, through collective
efforts, we can continue to break barriers and open doors
for underrepresented individuals in STEM. SD2 look
forward to continuing their mission, in collaboration with
organizations like Cooley, to mentor and empower the
next generation of diverse STEM leaders.
A
mundo continúa
innovando y
evolucionando,
la necesidad de
diversidad en
los campos de la
Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería
y Matemáticas (STEM) se ha
vuelto cada vez más evidente.
En San Diego Squared (SD2),
nuestra misión es empoderar a
estudiantes subrepresentados
para explorar carreras en STEM
y convertirse en los líderes STEM
del mañana. Recientemente,
tuvimos la oportunidad de
celebrar la excelencia Latinx
en STEM a través de una cena
auspiciada por Cooley. Este
evento reunió a ejecutivos,
mentores, académicos e internos
Latinx para profundizar
conexiones y resaltar el
sobresaliente trabajo que se
realiza en STEM por parte de
individuos Latinx.
Carlos Ramirez, Partner at Cooley and SD2 Board Member
nuestros esfuerzos
colectivos, podemos
seguir derribando
barreras y abriendo
puertas para individuos
subrepresentados en
STEM. Esperamos
continuar nuestra misión
en colaboración con
organizaciones como
Cooley, para guiar y
empoderar a la próxima
generación de diversos
líderes STEM.
Entrepreneur
Augustus Holm
A LEADER IN THE MAKING
Augustus Holm is a young entrepreneur,
philanthropist and a senior at The Bishop’s
School. In 2019, he founded the Youth
Philanthropy Council (YPC). Since its
inception,
YPC has
been
responsible for the
largest shoe drives in
San Diego County. The
event was coined as
‘Saint Nicks Kicks’ and
last year they were able
to distribute over 18,000
pairs of shoes to San
Diegans in need!
Through his hard work
and volunteerism,
Augustus has raised
over $2.1 million for
various causes. Among
them is building a new
wing in the San Ysidro
Health Maternal and
Child Center, increasing
access to healthcare in San
Ysidro. The funds he raised
also helped build a school in
a remote part of Kenya with
over 150 children. They
have been used to collect
over 12,000 articles of
clothing for orphans and
Promoting CheckRx
many living in shelters in Mexico. They also distributed
over 200,000 masks and sanitizing equipment for the
elderly during the pandemic. The Youth Philanthropy
Council has grown to 6 chapters, four on the West coast
and two on the East.
Augustus also founded Nexus Ventures, a social club for
young entrepreneurs. Nexus has grown to 17 chapters
in high schools across
the nation and in three
different countries
with over 160 active
members. Nexus
focuses on empowering
youth and fostering
ideas to turn them
into real businesses.
Augustus and his team
help Nexus members
understand their
“why” so that any
business they pursue
has a purpose that
goes beyond financial
gain, the goal is to
“prioritize people over
profits” shared Holm.
To promote this, Nexus
holds bi-monthly meetings
covering topics such as
“Creating Your Business
Plan,” “Ethics of AI” and
“Finding your WHY”.
These conversations serve
Agustus Holm with friends at the YPC Shoe Drive
as preliminary interview
rounds for the Nexus
Ventures Entrepreneurship
Competition, where Nexus members submit their
business plans and compete for up to $30,000 in funding.
As if that was not enough, Augustus
is the founder and CEO of CheckRx.
CheckRx is a data intelligence
company that bridges the gap
between data and decision-making
for Medicare beneficiaries and those
who serve them by combining data
analytics, tools, visualization and
a user-friendly platform. CheckRx
is expected to become the premier
tool amongst Medicare agents, with
over 4,000 users on the waitlist
since August. It is estimated
to grow to 10,000 users
and gross 1.2 million
by the end of 2023!
The coming
year will see
Augustus
Chair the
- an honor,
but also
a massive
undertaking,
The Gala
will benefit
How Three Siblings Keep Their Bond Strong
through Promises2Kids
TWINS, ELLIE (15), EDEN (15), AND THEIR LITTLE BROTHER, OLIVER
(11) ENTERED CARE TOGETHER IN 2017. Due to neglect, it was
unsafe for them to remain at home. All three live apart in different
placements. Not long after they entered care, they joined Camp
Connect so that they would have regular opporunities to see each
other and spend quality time together. During a recent visit, the twins
were picked up first but wanted to wait until their little brother was
with them before deciding what they wanted to do together. When
he picked the bowling alley, they all agreed that was a great idea.
Any competition on the lanes was put aside as all three cheered each
other on when they got strikes or spares. The brother’s attention soon
drifted to the arcade where, seated next to each other, they raced in a
car game. Ellie and Eden gladly gave their extra money to Oliver, and
watched as he smiled from ear to ear.
Special memories like these are made possible thanks to kindhearted
and generous community members!
WILDCOAST is an organization that conserves coastal
and marine ecosystems and addresses climate change
through natural solutions. Founded in 2000 and with
offices in California and Mexico, WILDCOAST has
helped conserve 38 million acres of coastlines and ocean
habitat including coral reefs, mangrove forests, wetlands,
sea turtle nesting beaches, gray whale breeding lagoons,
underwater marine parks and more.
the surrounding waters, colorful coral reefs support an
abundance of marine life, including colorful fish, sea
turtles and dolphins. The reserve is an important nesting
and feeding site for large colonies of sea birds, sharks and
sea turtles. The island’s mangrove patches protect coastal
areas, acting as buffers against erosion and storm surges.
WILDCOAST recently led an underwater coral reef
monitoring expedition to the 1.5 million-acre Islas Marías
Biosphere Reserve to monitor coral reefs inside the
islands’ Marine Protected Area (MPA). The journey was
conducted by an all-women team of marine biologists,
including WILDCOAST’s Coral Conservation Manager,
Rebeca Melendez, and Oaxaca Conservation Coordinator,
Gabriela García Vázquez, as well as two scientists from the
Research Laboratory for Reef Conservation at the National
Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, and
The data collected on the expedition help scientists and
CONANP to analyze the health of corals and compare
the wealth of marine life inside the Marine Protected
Areas (MPAs) over time, which also helps inform future
management and conservation decisions. Unfortunately,
warming ocean temperatures induced by climate change
continue to threaten coral reefs around the globe. With
this year being forecasted as an El Niño year, these
researchers fear that warmer than usual temperatures will
threaten corals forcing them to release their life-sustaining
zooxanthellae in a process known as coral bleaching. The
previous El Niño and marine heatwaves of 2016-2017 were
catastrophic to about three-quarters of the world’s reefs.
The WILDCOAST team is wasting no time and working
around the clock finding innovative ways to help safeguard
coral reefs and increase their resilience in Islas Marias
Biosphere Reserve as well as nine other national parks
in Mexico that protect coral reefs to ensure their survival
during El Niño’s projected marine heatwave. Conserving
the biodiversity and ecological integrity of Islas Marias
Biosphere Reserve also ensures the conservation of both
natural and cultural heritage, making it an essential area
for research, education, and sustainable tourism.
the country’s most talented tastemakers
coming together for a week of wine and food
Since 2004, the
has stood as
one of the
largest luxury
wine and culinary events
in the country, racking up
numerous accolades from
prestigious entities like
USA Today and Biz Bash
Magazine. But according to
founders Michelle Metter and
Ken Loyst, no recognition is
as significant as the impact
this iconic event has had
on the futures of aspiring
professionals who wish to
pursue a career in hospitality.
Each year, the organization
raises funds to enrich
the development of the
hospitality workforce in the city of San Diego. Line
cooks, servers, culinary students, hotel staff and food
and beverage professionals who are representative
of San Diego’s tourism
sector apply for the
annual scholarship which
has funded hundreds of
applicants in their pursuits.
For small business owners
and restaurateurs in San
Diego, access to funding
that allows their young staff
to improve their skill has a
ripple effect. Receiving these
scholarships can be a pivotal
milestone that touches more
than just the individual’s life.
Often, these scholarships
mean that as the individual
gains more skill, the
generational wealth of their
families grows as well. It
means that the businesses
where the scholarship
recipients work get a more
skilled labor force that helps
everyone thrive.
CULTIVATING GROWTH IN THE GARDEN & BEYOND
San Diego Botanic
Garden (SDBG) in
Encinitas is more
than just a beautiful
place. Focused on
sharing plant wisdom
with people of all
backgrounds and ages, the Garden
has prioritized growing its education,
science and conservation programs,
which now extend well beyond the
Garden’s 37 acres.
Education & Community Outreach
Onsite children’s offerings such as
SAPLinGS (Science, Art, and PLay
in Garden Spaces) invite budding
gardeners to explore nature through
hands-on activities, while offsite
projects like the Ocean Knoll Canyon
Restoration project, engage hundreds
of students to learn about habitat
restoration with staff. Important
programs like Access Afternoons and Museums for All allow the Garden to
welcome thousands of visitors from underserved communities each year to
ensure access to nature, learning and beauty for everyone.
Science & Conservation
Science and conservation continue to be key pillars as the Garden works
to address environmental challenges, from climate change to food
insecurity. With a focus on protecting and sustainably utilizing California
native plants, medicinal plants and food and agricultural plants, SDBG
is actively involved in more than 20 projects that have local and global
impacts. Highlights include conserving rare plants found in the US-Mexico
borderlands around Otay Mountain Wilderness, the creation of a national
medicinal plants collection and research to help inform global strategies for
the conservation and use of plants in food and agriculture.
Exhibitions
Presenting world class horticulture displays and immersive experiences
throughout the year, there is always something to discover at the Garden.
Highlights this season include the fascinating Savage Gardens exhibition on
display through October 29 featuring hundreds of real carnivorous plants
along with three larger-than-life sculpture installations, and the return of
Lightscape, a dazzling after-dark winter experience unlike any other.
locales e internacionales. Algunos de los más destacados
son el de la
conservación
de plantas
Living by the ocean is a dream for many
Healthcare
Navigating San Diego’s
Medicare Changes
EXPERT INSIGHTS FROM SBHIS INSURANCE SERVICES
As we approach the annual
enrollment period, San Diego’s
senior population faces significant
healthcare access disruptions.
Major medical groups, including
Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal,
are discontinuing their acceptance
of Medicare Advantage plans. UCSD is also ending
specific Medicare Advantage Programs. To help
you navigate these changes, we spoke with Pat
Salas, President of SBHIS Insurance Services.
Pat recommends considering Medicare
Supplements, which complement Medicare and
offer comprehensive coverage. While they come
with premiums and prescription drug costs, they
provide the freedom to select healthcare providers
without network restrictions.
What is crucial to know is that everyone affected
by these contract terminations will have access to a
guaranteed issue period. This means you can enroll
in a Medicare supplement without worrying about
pre-existing health conditions.
If Medicare supplements are financially
challenging, Pat suggests exploring Medicare
Advantage Plans. These plans offer robust benefits
at a lower premium, albeit with potential shifts to a
different healthcare system.
Taking prompt action is vital, as the enrollment
period nears and the more you wait, some doctors
SBHIS Care Talk
Al acercarnos al periodo
anual de inscripción,
las personas mayores
de San Diego se
están enfrentando a
importantes alteraciones
relacionadas con
el ingreso. Los grupos médicos más
grandes, incluidos Scripps Clinic y
Scripps Coastal, están descontinuando
la aceptación de planes Medicare
Advantage. UCSD también está
terminando con algunos planes de
Medicare Advantage, por lo cual, para
ayudarlos a sortear estos inconvenientes
es que hablamos con Pat Salas,
presidente de SBHIS Insurance Services.
Pata recomienda considerar los Medicare
Supplements que complementan a
Medicare y brindar cobertura integral.
Making a Difference
Schubach Aviation
LEGACY OF CHARITABLE GIVING CONTINUES TO
SOAR WITH ‘MILES THAT MATTER’
Kimberly Herrell
As San Diego’s premier private aircraft
operator, Schubach Aviation, celebrated
an impressive milestone last year
marking its 30th anniversary, the
company unveiled a new charitable
giving program called ‘Miles that Matter.’
This philanthropic initiative was created
to not only be a testament to the company’s enduring
success but also a tribute to its founder, Henry Schubach,
whose legacy of giving back to the San Diego community
continues to be a core tenant of the company’s mission.
Founded in 1992, Schubach Aviation operates one of
Southern California’s foremost private aircraft fleets.
For 30 years Schubach Aviation has been a dedicated
partner to corporate and personal travelers, offering
aircraft management, aircraft acquisition services, and
on-demand charter service with unlimited global reach.
Schubach sets the standard for flying private, with
an uncompromising commitment to safety, absolute
72 GBSAN.COM | OCTOBER 2023
eliability and an individualized approach to client care
that far exceeds industry standards. Schubach is proud
to have achieved both ARG/US Platinum and IS-BAO
Stage III endorsements. Both are highest level operator
ratings, awarded only to those jet charter operators
who have demonstrated successful implementation of
industry best safety practices both domestically and
internationally. This
places Schubach
Aviation in the
upper three percent
of over 1,000 U.S.
based charter
operators. Schubach
Aviation’s “Private
Access” program,
introduced in 2020,
offers one-of-a-kind
customized travel
experiences created
with a network of
world-class partners
to deliver
access to the
extraordinary.
Miles that
Matter
encompasses a
wide range of
philanthropic
activities
throughout the
year, including
donations
and events.
However, the
centerpiece
of this initiative is Schubach’s annual donation-per-mile
campaign. For every mile flown on Schubach Aviation’s
private charter flights throughout the year, the company
contributes one cent to a San Diego-based non-profit
organization. This unique approach to corporate giving
not only reflects Schubach Aviation’s long-standing
commitment to its local community but also highlights its
dedication to making a positive impact beyond the skies.
Schubach Aviation’s CEO, Kimberly Herrell, expressed
her excitement about the program, sharing with GB
Magazine, “Giving back to our community is a value that
Henry Schubach instilled in the company from the very
beginning and one that we are proud to carry forward.”
For the inaugural
year Miles
that Matter,
Schubach chose
to partner with
three remarkable
organizations:
Monarch School,
Shelter to Soldier,
and Curebound.
These nonprofits
have all received
donations through
the donation-permile
campaign in
the past, and
their continued
positive
impacts on
the San Diego
community and
beyond truly
embodied the
spirit of Miles
that Matter.
In an age where
corporate
success too
often comes at
the expense of community engagement and humanity,
Schubach’s Miles that Matter program reflects the
company’s unwavering commitment to corporate social
responsibility and leaving a lasting legacy of compassion
and generosity.
Moon Base San Diego
ACTIVITY AND EDUCATION CENTER LAUNCHES
AT THE SAN DIEGO AIR & SPACE MUSEUM
A
new family-friendly, re-imagined “Moon
Base San Diego” Activity and Education
Center has launched at the San Diego
Air & Space Museum, offering handson,
interactive and immersive learning
activities for explorers of all ages who
want to experience a trip to the Moon.
“Moon Base San Diego is a one-of-a-kind experience
offering explorers of all ages the opportunity to learn what
it takes to live, learn and perform experiments on the Moon
without ever leaving planet Earth,” Jim Kidrick, President
& CEO of the Museum shared with GB Magazine. “The
new space is interactive, educational and most importantly
– FUN! – for adventurers seeking a truly unique and
immersive experience right here in their own backyard.”
“Moon Base San Diego’s” habitat immerses families in life
on the Moon with living quarters and a lunar surface they
can experience and explore. Children visit a NASA lunar
lander capsule, taking on the roles of pilot and astronaut.
An interactive wall gamifies learning about life on the
Moon. In the center of the room, children of all ages can
sit and interact around tables teeming with interactive
learning materials.
The Museum invites families to experience life on the
Moon and expose them to the opportunity of STEM
careers in aerospace. School field trips and summer camps
also will benefit from the learning activities in “Moon
Base San Diego.” “Moon Base San Diego” was made
possible by the generosity of the Walter J. and Betty C.
Zable Foundation and Las Patronas.
“Moon Base San Diego”
is the logical next
step in the Museum’s
long-standing
commitment to offering
accessible educational
opportunities to a wide
range of audiences
throughout the region.
Earlier this year, the
Museum unveiled a
new innovative and
groundbreaking
“Mission
Control” mobile
classroom that
dramatically
increases STEM
outreach and
programming
and brings
education to
where the need
is most critical
in our local
communities.
The “Mission
Control” mobile
classroom
offers programming
to schools, childcare
centers and summer
camps to increase the
Museum’s geographical
outreach, quality
and quantity of
equipment used, and
most importantly, the
number of children
served.
“Mission Control”
travels to remote
and underserved
populations, bringing
STEM education to where local youth live and learn. Museum educators provide
instruction using advanced technology, supplies and learning processes to engage
children’s imaginations. At the conclusion of some programs, students take home a new
storybook and supplies for simple activities to extend learning at home.
The hands-on portions of the Museum’s education programs include building and art
projects, which connect back to the meaning of the stories the students read, using
materials such as blocks and arts and crafts supplies. As children engage their imagination,
they learn to solve problems and develop critical thinking skills, use references from the
story, and collaborate with their peers and caregivers.
“Moon Base San Diego” and “Mission Control” are just two of the many examples of how
the San Diego Air & Space Museum remains committed to its core value of educating the
public about the historical and social significance of air and space technology and its future
promise as a pathway to advanced innovations and career opportunities. Contact the
museum for more information and sponsorship opportunities.
SHAPING SAN DIEGO’S CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
In the bustling heart of San Diego’s Balboa Park,
Comic-Con Museum stands as a testament
to the enduring power of popular arts. This
vibrant institution owes much of its success to
the leadership of CEO Rita Vandergaw, whose
journey from retirement to leading this venture
has been nothing short of remarkable.
Rita’s journey to the helm of Comic-Con Museum
began as a volunteer on the museum’s Steering
Committee. At the time, she was fully retired,
having enjoyed a distinguished career as the head
of the Port of San Diego’s Cruise Program and
marketing departments at major airlines. It was
Rita’s passion for travel and tourism that initially
drew her to the project, seeing the museum
as a unique attraction that could enhance San
Diego’s reputation as a premier travel and tourism
destination.
“I truly never envisioned this role at this stage of
my life, but I have to say, all my past experiences
have perhaps been the path leading me to this
opportunity,” Rita shared with GB Magazine.
Troy Carlson, Rita Vandergaw and Bill Farmer - the Voice of Disney’s Goofy
One of Rita’s most significant achievements has been overseeing
the museum’s successful opening. She recalls the exceptional effort
required to meet a tight deadline, which involved the construction,
building painting, roof replacement and the curation of seven exhibits
in under four months. This incredible feat was made possible by the
unwavering support of the Steering Committee, the Committee of 100,
the City of San Diego, and countless volunteers who worked tirelessly
to bring the vision to life.
80 GBSAN.COM | OCTOBER 2023
The museum’s role in Balboa Park is also a
testament to Rita’s vision. As the newest addition
to the park’s 17 museums, Comic-Con Museum
extends the brand’s reach and attracts more visitors
to this cultural hub. Rita envisions it as a catalyst
for increasing awareness of Balboa Park’s rich arts
and cultural community, making it a “must-see”
destination.
One aspect Rita takes immense pride in is the
museum’s diverse range of exhibits and educational
programs. With no permanent collection, the
museum has introduced 17 different exhibits in
less than two years, covering everything from
comics and graphic novels to animation and
science fiction. “We are celebrating the popular
arts in all their forms,” Rita says, highlighting
how the museum’s dynamic offerings showcase
the evolution of popular arts over time.
Community
engagement
is also at the
forefront of Rita’s
initiatives. The
collaboration
with Feeding
San Diego stands
out as a shining
example. The
museum hosted
a contest for
K-12 students to
design a hungerfighting
hero,
Rita Vandergaw and Mayor Todd Gloria
emphasizing
the importance of addressing food insecurity.
The response was overwhelming, with over 400
entries and 12 finalists featured in an exhibit at the
museum’s Education Center. The initiative not only
garnered local attention but spread nationwide,
demonstrating how the popular arts can inspire
positive action in the community.
Rita Vandergaw’s leadership at Comic-Con
Museum has been nothing short of transformative.
Under her guidance, the museum has become
a vibrant hub for popular arts, education
and community engagement, enhancing San
Diego’s cultural landscape in the process. Her
journey from retirement to this pivotal role is a
testament to the unexpected paths that can lead to
outstanding achievements.
SEASON GOODPASTURE
BREAKING BARRIERS FOR TRIBAL COMMUNITIES
Season Goodpasture is the founder and CEO
of Acorns to Oak Trees, a service provider
of the San Diego Regional Center (SDRC).
She launched her non-profit in 2022 to
increase awareness in tribal communities
about intellectual and developmental
disabilities and to cultivate relationships
between regional centers and Tribal families.
Through her journey in understanding the regional
center system for her daughter, Harley, Season
saw a need to help other Native American
families navigate the regional center and
school district systems to ensure their
loved ones have access to resources and
quality services.
Season’s organization started
by providing occupational and
speech therapy. Their speech
and language therapist (SLP) is
bilingual in Spanish and English
which has helped to fill a need
in their region. On and near the
reservation are many Hispanic
families who have appreciated
having a bilingual SLP.
Today, Acorns to Oak Trees
has expanded with a Native
American Community
Navigator Program, a Tribal
Maternal, Infant, and Early
Childhood Home Visiting
Program (Tribal MIECHV),
and more recently, an Infant
Education Program. They are
the first Tribal organization in
California and the United States to be vendored by a
regional center to provide infant education services.
“We are very proud, but also very grateful to SDRC for
helping us reach this monumental milestone,” Season
shared with GB Magazine.
Her organization was awarded two home-visiting grants
through the MIECHV Program to develop a homevisiting
program for Pala, Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel,
Ione Band of Miwok Indians, and Wilton Rancheria.
The goals of the programs are to support
healthy, happy, successful American Indian
and Alaska Native (AI/AN) children and
families through coordinated, high-quality,
culturally tailored, evidence-based
strategies.
The infant and toddler development
program is designed for young
children 0-36 months of age with a
known or suspected developmental
delay in one or more of the five
areas of development: fine motor,
gross motor, adaptive skills,
speech and language,
cognition, and socialemotional
skills.
Sessions have a
strong emphasis
on family support
and training,
and a child’s
development of
their imitation
skills, sustained
and joint
attention, and
play skills.
A unique quality that
sets Acorns to Oak Trees
apart is that many of
the staff have a social
work or mental health
background which has
been incredibly helpful
in working with some of
the Tribal Social Services
programs and Native
families where the child
is placed outside of the
home or other complex
issues exist.
The team can easily
empathize with the
families and add another layer
of support beyond just the
vendored service. “Thanks to our
Native American Community
Navigator Program combined
with our ACF Tribal MIECHV
grants and newly awarded
SAMHSA Circles of Care grant,
we can take a holistic approach
to working with the child and
their entire family which is really
what leads to better outcomes for
the child, family, and community
as a whole,” added Season.
Mom and daughter who receive services with Acorns
Acorns to Oak Trees
Acorns to Oak Trees offers many
forms of sensory integration
options which provides a rich
eco-therapeutic opportunity for
the child to integrate therapy with
nature aligning with native customs
and traditions. “It is just good
medicine for anybody,” says Season.
Healthcare
AMPLIFYING IMPACT
SAN YSIDRO HEALTH’S PHILANTHROPY LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
San Ysidro Health (SYHealth) is not just
a healthcare provider; it is a lifeline for
underserved and vulnerable communities
in San Diego County. Its mission is clear:
enhance health, ensure access for all and
be a beacon of hope for those who need it
most. At the heart of this mission stands
the Philanthropy Leadership Council (PLC), a dedicated
network of community leaders who volunteer to amplify
SYHealth’s impact. The PLC plays a pivotal role in
strengthening the organization, raising its profile, and
spearheading major fundraising efforts.
Initially rooted in South San Diego County, SYHealth
expanded its reach into the Central, Southeastern
and Eastern regions and, more recently, merged with
Mountain Health Community Services to extend
services to the rural Mountain Empire. Today, SYHealth’s
clinics span the entire county, serving culturally and
geographically diverse families living in urban, suburban
and rural areas.
What distinguishes SYHealth is its dedication to
addressing the specific needs of the 145,000 lives in their
care, many of whom face daunting healthcare disparities.
In 2022, SYHealth’s demographics told a story of
resilience: over 90% of patients lived below 200% of the
federal poverty level, the majority reliant on Medi-Cal,
and nearly 1 in 5 were uninsured.
A noteworthy aspect of SYHealth’s approach is
its emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion and
representation. It prioritizes hiring individuals
from the communities it serves, fostering trust and
highlighting the importance of representation in
healthcare and social services.
88 GBSAN.COM | OCTOBER 2023
The PLC is a cornerstone of SYHealth’s mission. These dedicated
volunteers work tirelessly on initiatives such as the annual El Zapatón,
Health and Wellness Fair in December and the upcoming Emerald
Ball Gala.
The 5th Annual
El Zapatón
(“The Big Shoe”
in Spanish)
created by
PLC member
and long-time
supporter Rafael
Garcia, is a
heartwarming
event providing children aged 5-17 with critical wellness screenings,
immunizations, gift cards for new shoes, and other essential services.
For families with limited budgets, this initiative bridges the gap,
offering children a simple joy—a new pair of shoes, especially
impactful during the holidays. www.syhealth.org/events
The Emerald Ball, SYHealth’s
largest and most successful
fundraising signature event, is
scheduled for August 10, 2024.
Celebrating the organization’s
55th anniversary, all proceeds
will support the mission of
healthcare for all.
The PLC’s involvement
extends beyond fundraising;
they create opportunities to
connect with stakeholders,
raise SYHealth’s profile,
and ensure the organization
continues its vital work -
offering accessible healthcare,
addressing communityspecific
needs, and promoting diversity and representation.
As SYHealth’s reach expands, the PLC remains indispensable. Together,
they are paving the way for a healthier, more equitable future for San
Diego County’s most vulnerable populations.
You can be part of this mission. Whether by joining the PLC, volunteering
at El Zapatón, or attending the Emerald Ball, your support will make a
lasting impact. For more information or to get involved, please contact us
at giving@syhealth.org. Join us on this journey towards a healthier, more
equitable future.
Wyoming
FOREVER WEST
Yellowstone National Park
Wyoming is
home to
endless
views,
open skies,
rodeos,
national
treasures and scenic hiking trails.
The State of Wyoming is also
home to one of the best nature and
wildlife destinations in the world:
Yellowstone National Park.
Within Yellowstone’s 2.2 million
acres, we had many opportunities
to observe wildlife such as bison,
elk, and bear, explore geothermal
areas that contain about half the
world’s active geysers, including
Old Faithful
OCTOBER 2023 | GBSAN.COM 97
Old Faithful, which currently erupts
around various times a day with an
average height of between 130 and
140 feet!
Yellowstone National Park
To continue our western adventures,
we joined in the fun at a timeless
tradition since 1919, the Cody
Night Rodeo. Known as the rodeo
capital of the world, the Cody Night
Rodeo is held every night of the
summer complete with bull riding,
barrel racing and team roping. The Cody Nite Rodeo
performance is known as “Best Large Outdoor Rodeo of
the Year.” We loved every moment of the wild, western,
family-friendly action. We arrived early and met the
cowboys and bull riders as well as had our picture taken
on Norman, a 2,000-pound Brahma bull!
The stunning landscape of Wyoming’s mountain ranges,
the rodeo capital of the world, great food, inviting locals
and endless public land to hike with creeks and rivers,
and plenty of places to stargaze make Wyoming a perfect
ESCAPADITA.
Wyoming
Wyoming es el hogar de vistas
infinitas, cielos abiertos, rodeos,
tesoros nacionales y senderos
The Cody Rodeo.
ESCAPADITA.
