COASTAL CLEANUP DAY
COMING TOGETHER TO PRESERVE THE HEALTH OF OUR REGION
At San Diego Gas & Electric, our employees feel a strong sense of purpose beyond delivering clean,
safe and reliable energy services to our 3.7 million customers. As part of our commitment to
the communities we serve, we support a variety of initiatives through shareholder contributions,
employee giving programs, and volunteerism. Our philanthropic priorities include: Climate Action,
Emergency Preparedness and Safety, Economic Prosperity, and Inspiring Future Leaders (K-16 STEM).
Many of our initiatives focus on advancing racial and gender equity in alignment with our company value to
“champion people.” We understand that in order for our region to thrive and become more sustainable,
it’s important for all of us to do our part to ensure no one is left behind.
Every year, thousands of
motivated San Diegans
join forces to remove
pollution threatening
our local environment on a very special
day in September: Coastal Cleanup Day.
This long-standing 35- year tradition,
organized by I Love A Clean San Diego, is all in support
of environmental stewardship and a deep love for our
home, the San Diego region. Since its inception, Coastal
Cleanup Day volunteers have removed 5 million pounds
of litter and debris. For over 20 years, San Diego Gas
& Electric® (SDG&E) and Sempra
have partnered with I Love A Clean
San Diego to participate in Coastal
Cleanup Day while also encouraging
hundreds of its employees to participate annually.
“I Love A Clean San Diego is a regional powerhouse that
encourages San Diegans to turn their passion into action.
Team SDG&E has been a long-time collaborator and I
have had the chance to witness the power of our united
efforts firsthand for almost two decades,” said Morgan
Justice-Black, community relations manager at SDG&E.
“Coastal Cleanup Day
is a great opportunity to
enjoy the outdoors and
teach the next generation
how to take care of our
planet. Come join us on
September 23.”
Last year, SDG&E
employee volunteers
were responsible for
diverting 110,000
pounds of litter and
debris from San Diego’s
cherished parks and beaches, helping
to protect and preserve our local
ecosystems for future generations.
In addition to collecting litter and
debris, volunteers also participate
in ecosystem rehabilitation projects
including removal of invasive
plants, planting fruit trees, pruning
vegetation and planting native species
to create habitats. Participation is
open to families and individuals at
over 100 locations.
San Diego’s Coastal Cleanup
Day is a major part of the
International Coastal
Cleanup. The San Diego
program is facilitated by
the Ocean Conservancy
and organized statewide
by the California Coastal
Commission. Without this
This year, Coastal
Cleanup Day will be
on Saturday, September
23, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at
over 100 locations countywide.
All are welcome to join in
restoring local habitats and
nature for a global cause.
robust defense of our waterways, the
scientific community estimates that by
2050, the world’s oceans could contain
I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD)
is an environmental nonprofit founded
in 1954. ILACSD leads and inspires
our community to actively conserve
and enhance the environment
through example, outreach and local
involvement. The
organization serves
about 100,000 students,
adults and businesses
every year by providing
a venue – it is finding a strong partner in our mission to
end homelessness, one life at a time,” shared Emily Davis,
Developmental Officer, Special Events & Corporate
Partnerships. The expert culinary team worked alongside
Father Joe’s Villages to create a customized, locally
Healthcare
Are You A San Diegan Who
Is At Risk Of Losing Their
Medicare Advantage?
Amidst concerns
raised by a
recent San Diego
Union-Tribune
article detailing
potential changes
to Medicare
Advantage
contracts, Pat Salas,
an industry veteran
and President of
SBHIS Insurance
Services, sheds light
on the situation and
outlines possible
outcomes for
affected seniors.
The article,
published on
August 11, 2023,
revealed that
Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal may discontinue
their contracts with Medicare Advantage clients,
leaving thousands of enrollees uncertain about their
SBHIS Founder and Chief
Dream Enabler Pat Salas
healthcare access.
Pat underscored
that while no
confirmation yet
exists, Scripps
Clinic and
Scripps Coastal
have indicated
they might not
accept Medicare
Advantage Plans
starting January 1,
2024. This potential
development could
drastically impact
the care available
to Medicare
Advantage
beneficiaries in the
region.
Pat described a few
possible scenarios
for affected seniors.
The first option
entails using the
annual enrollment
period, which runs
from October 1 to December 7, to switch to a Medicare
Supplement plan. Although this provides continuity
of care, it comes with a monthly premium ranging
26 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2023
from $250 to $450 - a considerable departure from
the zero premium many are accustomed to. The
second option involves transitioning to a different
provider who continues to accept their current
Medicare Advantage plan. This route may involve
switching to a Medicare HMO or PPO plan.
However, with the latter, there is a risk that the
chosen provider might opt to terminate the doctorpatient
relationship due to increased patient load.
Pat particularly highlighted the significance of the
Medicare Supplement option, especially for those
who want to retain their trusted Scripps Clinic
or Scripps
Coastal
physicians.
Notably,
due to the
potential
disruption,
those affected
could qualify
for a special
enrollment
period,
waiving
typical
underwriting
requirements
for Medicare
Supplements,
even if they
have pre-existing medical conditions.
While this solution offers stability and direct
access to familiar doctors, the cost difference from
a zero premium Medicare Advantage plan could
pose a financial challenge. Pat acknowledged
the difficulty of this decision, stressing that the
team at SBHIS Insurance Services is available to
guide individuals through their options based on
individual needs and circumstances.
The uncertainty around the situation places
seniors in a delicate position. Pat stressed the
importance of staying informed and prepared, as
Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal are expected
to provide clarity soon. In the meantime, SBHIS
Insurance Services offers expertise and support,
helping seniors navigate the potential changes and
make informed decisions.
Pat, a respected figure in the Medicare industry
with over 30 years of experience, urged readers to
consider their unique situations when evaluating
the available choices. Her insight and advice
provide a beacon of guidance amid the uncertainty,
offering
affected
individuals a
roadmap to
maintaining
their
healthcare
needs while
transitioning
through
possible
changes. As
the situation
unfolds,
seniors are
reminded to
stay tuned
Pat Salas supporting the healthcare community
and consider
the solutions
that align with their needs and preferences. SBHIS
Insurance Services stands ready to assist you in
finding the best path forward in a rapidly evolving
healthcare landscape.
Pat Salas is also a recognized community leader in
San Diego and is dedicated to making a difference
in the region through volunteerism, philanthropy
and stewardship.
NURTURING CURIOSITY
THE MAGIC OF SAN DIEGO CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY MUSEUM
Since 1999, over one
million children and
families have walked
through San Diego
Children’s Discovery
Museum’s (SDCDM)
doors to explore,
imagine and experiment through
purposeful play and immersive learning
experiences. Located in Escondido,
SDCDM is the only hands-on,
educational children’s museum in North
San Diego County, focusing on early
STREAM (science, technology, reading,
engineering, art and math) education.
32 GBSAN.COM | SEPTEMBER 2023
SDCDM invites children and families to unlock
the doors to curiosity and develop a lifelong love of
learning fueled by enriching and playful experiences.
Within the Museum, visitors will find passionate
paleontologists digging for dinosaur bones in the Base
Camp exhibit, aspiring artists crafting birdhouses in
the Maker
Studio, and
future farmers
tending to the
Edible Garden.
The Museum’s
child-centric
approach
to learning
ensures
every child
is inspired to
learn more and
feel supported
in their
curiosity.
“I have been
taking my son
to the Museum
for over a year
now, and we
have had a
very educational and enjoyable experience every visit,”
said Paul Jaskiewicz, a member of SDCDM. “I am a big
believer in ‘open play’ where my child just runs the show
and decides what he wants to do next, and the Museum
provides us with just that… we always have something
to stimulate our inquisitive nature,” he added.
In the last year, SDCDM served over 100,000 children
and families like Paul’s. At the core of the Museum’s
work is its Access for All program. Recent studies have
revealed that being “kindergarten-ready” enhances a
child’s chances of meeting educational milestones and
decreases the likelihood of adverse outcomes in life.
“Research has shown that the period of a child’s life from
birth to age five is crucial for cognitive development.
During these formative years, children will lay the
foundation for skills such as problem solving, creative
thinking and communication. These social and
emotional skills are foundational for future success
in school, work, and life,” Whitney Raser, Director of
Education at SDCDM shared with GB Magazine.
Unfortunately, access to early childhood educational
resources disproportionately affects economically
disadvantaged
families, leading
to significant
academic and
social readiness
gaps. SDCDM’s
Access for All
program provides
families access
to the Museum
regardless of
financial or
physical barriers.
Through reduced
admission,
scholarships for
Title-I schools
and sensoryfriendly
mornings
for children with
special needs,
SDCDM provides
a welcoming and
inclusive space for all children and families seeking
enriching, early learning opportunities.
As the Museum continues to expand and grow its
offerings, the community’s support is vital to reach
children at home, school and in the community. When
the public invests in its youngest learners, society gains
a more capable, productive and valuable workforce
that builds regional resilience and pays dividends for
generations.
SDCDM’s mission of sparking a love of learning so all
children can discover their wildest dreams would not be
possible without the relentless support of the families,
children, teachers, and the community it serves.
Inspiration
Southwestern College
MAKING HISTORY
When you think of 1961,
what comes to mind?
Perhaps you recall
that that was the year
Breakfast at Tiffany’s and
West Side Story landed
on the big screen, or
that Chubby Checker’s
“Let’s Twist” hit the
airwaves, or maybe you
think about John F.
Kennedy’s inauguration.
If you grew up in the
South Bay, however, you
may recall that that was
the year Southwestern
College was first
established.
The Chula Vista campus
did not yet exist at that time, but thanks to a partnership
with Chula Vista High School (CVHS), Southwestern
was able to begin offering classes, and an important
institution was in its infancy.
Since that time, Southwestern has fully matured and
is turning 62-years-old this month. If it was a person,
they would be able to begin collecting social security!
Later this year the SWC Foundation will even have the
opportunity to honor an alumnus from the college’s
very first graduating class, Roger Cazares, at the
annual Jaguar Awards Luncheon. Along with his wife
Norma, who retired from Southwestern after serving
many years as
an academic
counselor, the
pair will be
receiving the
Jaguar Award
which is given
each year to a
person or persons
who have made a
significant impact
on Southwestern
College and/
or the larger
regional
community. In
the case of the
Cazareses, they
most certainly
have done both.
As activists in
the Chicano
movement,
leaders within
Roger and Norma Cazares community
organizations,
and consistent champions of students, both at
Southwestern and beyond, Roger and Norma have
secured a unique and important legacy within the South
Bay region.
The college has grown along with, and in many ways
because of, them from those early days when Roger
remembers attending class at CVHS. Having grown
into an organization that is a pillar of the South Bay
community, and the only institution of higher learning
in south San Diego County, Southwestern College
serves roughly 20,000 individuals each year across its
Making a Difference
Cal Coast Cares Foundation
SUPPORTING LOCAL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS
Benjamin Franklin is widely known for his
views on education, considering it one
of the highest priorities for a productive
society. Franklin is quoted as saying: “An
investment in knowledge pays the best
interest.” By that measure, the Cal Coast
Cares Foundation continues to invest
very well, having awarded over $930,000 in scholarships
for local students and grants for teachers since its
inception in 2015.
The foundation recently announced its latest round of
scholarships to be awarded: over $160,000 to collegebound
high school seniors, foster students, and current
college students in San Diego and Riverside counties.
This included 40 local high school students,19 foster
students, and 100 local community college and
university students. The recipients of first-year foster
student scholarships will also be eligible for second-year
scholarships by continuing to meet basic requirements.
One of the 2023 scholarship awardees is Leilani Umana,
a senior at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista who will
be attending the University of California, Irvine.
“When I received the email about being a recipient of the
Cal Coast Cares Foundation Scholarship, the first thing
I did was run to tell my mom. Not only is receiving this
scholarship an honor, but a great opportunity. I’m very
grateful to have been selected, and I’ll use this experience
as motivation to continue working toward my goals.”
Winning this money is going to be a game changer for
the digital music program at Roosevelt Middle. The
headphones we are currently using to create music
simply don’t do the job. If they work at all, they don’t
accurately represent what the student is creating. I
can’t wait for their potential to be unlocked!
-Nathan Elias Kocivar
2022 Educator Grant Recipient
“Our mission at the foundation is to help local students
achieve their dream of attaining a college degree and to
help educators provide additional innovative learning
experiences for their students. This support is crucial
as the cost of education and other expenses continue
to increase,” said Rene McKee, Cal Coast Credit Union
Senior Vice President of Community & Public Relations,
and Foundation board member.
The Cal Coast Cares Foundation
also awards educator grants annually,
ranging from $500 to $2,500 to
teachers in San Diego and Riverside
counties. These grants support academic projects and
curriculum that advance any of the STREAM fields
(Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and
Mathematics) intended to promote lifelong learning.
“Educator grants are vital in supporting student
“An investment
in knowledge pays
the best interest.”
engagement and success. This funding helps teachers
bring additional classroom projects and enrichment
activities to life. We have seen the impact that grants have
on students across all grade levels, and we will continue
to support dedicated educators who work tirelessly to
inspire their students year after year,” said Todd Lane,
president and CEO of Cal Coast Credit Union and Cal
Coast Cares Foundation board member.
Educators in K-12 public, private or
charter schools, community and state
colleges/universities in San Diego or
Riverside counties can submit a grant
application detailing how they will utilize the funds to
enhance student learning.
Information on the Cal Coast Cares Foundation,
including guidelines to apply for student scholarships and
educator grants, can be found www.calcoastcu.org.
Thank you so much to the Cal Coast Cares Foundation
Scholarship Committee for this honor. I was absolutely
thrilled and incredibly grateful to receive this scholarship,
as it will help lessen the financial burden of the cost of
college on my family and support me in pursuing an
education and career in Environmental Studies.
(GSSD) is dedicated
to building the next
generation of leaders
- girls of courage,
confidence and
character, who make
the world a better place.
Through the Girl Scout program, girls are empowered to discover
and embrace unique STEM opportunities, igniting their interests
and inspiring many to pursue advanced STEM opportunities
in school or higher education. As a STEM partner, Southwest
Airlines helps to propel girls’ aspirations and interests in careers
in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This builds
connections, grows confidence and creates hope for girls’ futures.
Serving more than 23,000 members across
San Diego and Imperial Counties, GSSD’s
has approximately 125 staff that support
nearly 9,000 volunteers, who lead and guide
more than 14,000 Girl Scouts (K-12) in the
region. The organization relies on generous
contributions from donors, community
partners and sponsors. Fostering the Girl
Scout leadership experience, partner
organizations offer learning opportunities
in the areas of STEM, outdoors, life skills,
entrepreneurship, community service
“Our longstanding
partnership with Southwest
Airlines fuels our goal of
closing the STEM gender
gap,” said Kristin Wiggins,
Chief Advancement Officer
at Girl Scouts San Diego.
“When girls are able to
explore new things in a safe
environment and witness
accomplished women in STEM positions, we unlock
their boundless potential.”
In 2017, Southwest Airlines launched Operation Wing Scout
(OWS) in partnership with the USS Midway Museum.
Since then, GSSD has hosted more than 300 Girl Scouts
at OWS workshops, with a pause during 2020-21. Twice
a year, Girl Scouts climb aboard the USS Midway to
learn about the science behind aviation technology.
They explore the essential elements of a working aircraft
carrier, experience a flight simulator and learn from a
panel of inspiring women in diverse aviation careers.
A recent Girl Scout participant noted the impact
of learning from female professionals: “When they
shared their passion and excitement for their jobs, it
inspired me. My favorite part was learning about all
the different careers you
can have in aviation,” she
continued. “You don’t
just have to be a pilot.”
This year, Southwest
Airlines is a Gold
Sponsor of GSSD’s
beloved fundraiser,
Urban Campout 2023:
Adventures Await, which promises to be an epic evening
of outdoor thrills, camaraderie and unforgettable
experiences at its Balboa Park campus. Attendees will
indulge in Girl Scout memories, connect with s’more
new friends in the great outdoors, and experience a oneof-a-kind
glimpse into the outdoor fun of Girl Scouts
- complete with archery and other games, plus gourmet
fare, a silent and live auction, local spirits, dancing,
and more! Southwest Airlines also supports Girl Scouts
San Diego in reaching new heights and destinations by
providing flight vouchers.
Proceeds support the boundless impact of Girl Scouting,
which empowers girls to seek new adventures and tackle
Honoring Veterans
by Preserving
Their Legacy.
Far more than the cross.
Since 1954, the Mt. Soledad National
Veterans Memorial has been honoring
veterans from the Revolutionary War to the
current war on terror. Beneath the iconic,
29-foot tall cross, thousands of black granite
plaques commemorate Presidents, Medal of
Honor recipients, privates, airmen, seamen,
and thousands of other service members who
have proudly served our nation and helped
preserve our freedoms.
With the support of our donors, we built 5
new walls in 2022 with space for 2,000 more
custom plaques to commemorate their service
and sacrifice. But there is still more to do!
Back to School Drive
Back to school
supplies cost
an average
of $75 - $150
per student.
Incoming
college
freshman face even higher
costs as students prepare to
live away from home for the
first time and have the added
expense of setting up a dorm
room. For families already
facing economic hardship,
this is an added challenge and
without adequate supplies,
students start the school year
already being behind.
To support students in need
during this important time of
year, BLCI is launching a Backto-School
Drive. Donating is as
easy as visiting the BLCI Amazon
Wish List! Select your items
and have them shipped directly
to BLCI, or donations can
be dropped off at any BLCI
program site. Gift cards and
general donations are also
accepted if you prefer students
to select their own items.
High need items include
backpacks and water bottles
for younger students, and
for rising college freshman:
bedding, towels and shower
supplies. Year-round needs
include books for the BLCI
program library and for the
upcoming Community Book
Drive in Partnership with San
Diego Oasis on September 21,
2024. Donate your favorite
childhood book or select a book
from BLCI’s preferred reading list
on Amazon.
School needs, visit www.BLCI.org
CHANGING LIVES FOR THOSE WITH EPILEPSY
One in ten people will experience a
seizure in their lifetime and another
one in twenty-six will be diagnosed
with epilepsy.
The Epilepsy Foundation of San
Diego County (EFSDC) leads the
fight to overcome the challenges of
living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop
seizures, find cures and save lives. EFSDC provides all
programs and
services free of
charge, including
counseling,
career
development,
advocacy
information
and referrals, as
well as support
groups for
individuals,
caregivers and
families, college
scholarships and
summer camps
for children and
teens.
Save the
date of Wednesday, December 6, 2023 for the 30th
Anniversary Gingerbread City Gala at the Natural
History Museum in Balboa Park to support their mission
and work in the community. This festive kick-off to
the holiday season features a nationally recognized
gingerbread competition from culinary artists and
enthusiasts (and a school category), live and silent
auctions and interactive museum exhibits, in addition to
a dinner program.
This highly anticipated event brings together the
area’s most influential community advocates, leaders,
medical experts and philanthropists to generate critical
funding needed to provide their programs and services
throughout San Diego County.
The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County is pleased
to announce its keynote speaker and special guest that
evening, filmmaker Miles Levin, the writer and director
of “Under the Lights.” The short film follows the story
of a young man
so desperate to
feel like a normal
teenager for a
night that he
attends his high
school prom
knowing that the
lights will likely
cause a seizure.
“Cinema has
historically
stigmatized and
ignored people
with epilepsy. A
demographic of
1 in 26 who have
almost never
Gingerbread City
been represented
authentically on screen and often suffer from brutal
stigma every day,” shares Miles Levin, a filmmaker who
himself lives with epilepsy.
San Diego County once again has a
Holocaust exhibit. Created and curated by
Sandra Scheller, daughter of Holocaust
survivors, this display is being funded by a
Neighborhood Reinvestment Grant of the
San Diego County Board of Supervisors.
This exhibit, which is divided into two parts,
is about the survivors in San Diego County
that are still with us today as well as the
history and stories of Holocaust survivors
that first came to San Diego after the war.
Jewish Federation of San Diego worked with
Sandra to help secure the $25,000 grant
received from San Diego County that makes
this exhibit possible.
In addition to its fiscal sponsorship,
Federation is activating its vast network
in directing a variety of individuals and
groups to visit and experience this
powerful exhibit firsthand. San Diego's
new Holocaust exhibit is an educational
tool, fostering understanding and guiding
us toward a more compassionate world.
As survivor stories echo through time,
they implore us to shape a future defined
by justice, inclusivity, and remembrance.
Leaders
Richard and Lynda Kerr
A GENUINE COMMITMENT TO THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Philanthropists Richard and Lynda Kerr
hold a special place in their hearts for
those with special needs. For decades,
through the
Kerr Family
Foundation,
Richard and
Lynda have provided essential
support to various programs
at Home of Guiding Hands
(HGH), including the
annual golf tournament,
which raises funds that
allow HGH to provide the
highest quality of support to
maximize independence and
quality of life for people with
disabilities.
The Kerr Family Foundation
has made a significant impact
on many organizations
since 2001. The foundation
stands true and strong to
the belief that their good
fortune should be shared
with those who need help.
Their philanthropy spans
into several categories: the
arts; animal rights or support
groups; and organizations
which help people develop
from a point of need to a
point of self-reliance. On
occasion, these categories are integrated into the same
goal of reaching at-risk children through means of art
programs, rescuing animals, and supporting initiatives at
Home of Guiding Hands.
“The years of dedication
and support from
Richard and Lynda have
profoundly improved
the quality of life for so
many with special needs,”
Edward Hershey, CEO
of Home of Guiding
Hands shared with GB
Magazine. “With their
support, we are able to
continue to provide our
participants with the
resources and assistance
to live a full, happy life.”
The 41st Annual Charity
Golf Classic will take
place on Friday October
27, 2023, at Sycuan’s Oak
Glen Golf Course. Guests
will enjoy 18 holes of
golf and will be treated
to unlimited beverages,
craft beers and all you
can eat on-course food
stations. Registration
begins at 8 a.m. and an
awards dinner will follow
the tournament. All funds
raised will support the
4,500 clients HGH serves annually. For more information
about the tournament and to participate or sponsor,
“Lynda and I have not only been touched by the
significant impact made by Home of Guiding
Hands, but we are also impressed by the fact
that HGH is a fiscally responsible organization,
and their ability to provide so much with the
small amount of funding they receive,” shared
Richard Kerr. “We are proud supporters of such a
wonderful cause.”
Rich Kerr’s inspiration to give back was cultivated
under the leadership of Dr. Irwin Jacobs while
working at Qualcomm. He was inspired by the
spirit of giving that he saw and has followed
that path ever since. His introduction to Home
of Guiding Hands many years ago came from
his close friend, Jimmy Alison, when Rich was
asked to join the golf committee and co-chair
the tournament. He was very impressed with the
objectives of HGH, so he politely obliged. To this
day, not only does he play in the tournament, but
he sponsors the event as well.
Rich and his wife Lynda do not require a spotlight,
they simply believe in giving back. They enjoy the
time spent watching the organizations they support
grow and flourish. Year
after year, they carefully
select charities to support
by determining where the
help is most needed.
Established in 1967,
Home of Guiding
Hands today operates 28
community-based homes
providing a wide range
of services throughout
San Diego and Imperial
Counties for 4,500 men,
women and children
with intellectual and
developmental disabilities
every year.
a direct investment
in the youth of
the Southcrest
providing 5th
with the
opportunity
The Ozarks
RUGGED BEAUTY AND
FASCINATING NATURAL WONDERS
Hawksbill Crag
The Ozarks are
mountains in the
central United States
spanning much of
northern Arkansas,
southern Missouri,
and northeastern
Oklahoma. The Ozarks are very old
mountains, being the remains of
ancient ranges exposed hundreds
of millions of years ago, and they
contain limestone bluffs towering
high above the crisscrossing trails
and streams.
We caught our flight on Southwest
Airlines and flew into Tulsa,
Oklahoma from where we ventured
to explore Northwest Arkansas and
Southern Missouri. The Buffalo
National River, the first National
River in the United States, gets its
Esteban, Danitza and Winky Villanueva
exploring the Buffalo National River
start here in the Ozarks, offering plenty of fishing, floating and other
recreational fun. A true gem far from the beaten path is Ponca, Arkansas.
Tucked into the mountainous upper Buffalo National River wilderness,
this tiny town is surrounded by great hiking trails and river-floating
scenery. From the pristine river that flows through it to the craggy,
towering cliffs that rise above it, Ponca is a basecamp for splendid
national park adventure.
SEPTEMBER 2023 | GBSAN.COM 91
We continued our outdoor
adventures driving to
Southern Missouri to
Dogwood Canyon Nature
Park, an outdoor paradise
located in Lampe, Missouri.
Featuring 10,000 acres of
natural beauty and rugged
scenery, we spent the day
here enjoying the grounds of
this private park founded by
Johnny Morris, the founder
of Bass Pro Shops. Dogwood
Canyon offers hiking,
biking, wildlife tours,
horseback riding and trout
fishing amongst towering
bluffs, waterfalls, and caves.
The park promotes natural
conservation and protects
the natural environment.
Our journey next took us to the town of Bentonville, Arkansas, the birthplace
and world headquarters for the world’s largest retailer, Walmart. Here you will
find the world renowned Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art nestled
around ponds and forest trails on 120 acres. Founded by Alice Walton and
designed by architect Moshe Safdie, the museum is a treasure for visitors and
residents. The museum features a permanent collection of American art from the
colonial era to the contemporary era.
Open skies, sparkling lakes and rivers, timeless landscapes, dense forests, dining
and outdoor adventure make the Ozarks a perfect ESCAPADITA.
Las montañas
Ozarks se ubican
en el centro de los
Estados Unidos,
recorriendo el norte
de Arkansas, sur de
Missouri y noreste
de Oklahoma. Son montañas muy
antiguas, remanentes de milenarias
cordilleras que surgieron hace
millones de años, hechas de
acantilados de piedra caliza
alzándose a grandes alturas sobre
senderos y arroyos.
entorno natural.
Luego, nuestro recorrido
nos llevó a la ciudad de
Bentonville en Arkansas,
lugar de nacimiento y mayor
este lugar, rodeado de 120
acres de estanques y senderos
Cielos abiertos, inmaculados lagos y ríos, vistas de
