In the quiet suburbs of Allentown, Pennsylvania, 

where childhood dreams are often stirred, a 

young Albert H. Yurvati found himself dreaming. 

Remembering back in 8th grade, Dr. Yurvati saw 

the acclaimed Michael DeBakey in a magazine 

and thought how extraordinary his significance 

on medicine is—never thinking he would also 

make an impact in the profession 50 years later. 

A unique trajectory, starting with the US Army, 

Dr. Yurvati not only discovered his passion for 

medicine but also found the love of his life, the 

ever-beautiful Sharon, during his advanced 

medic training for the military. When Sharon 

declared [NV], “If you’re not going to become 

a doctor, I am not marrying you,” that was when 

Dr. Yurvati knew Sharon was the one. She really 

saw and changed Dr. Yurvati’s life, inspiring him 

to be his best—something Dr. Yurvati never 

thought he had in him. 

Being an army medic, suturing up in the ER, 

cardiothoracic surgery was the epitome of 

what he thought to be a great career. And it 

turned out to be true! With multiple successful 

operations, he defined surgery, now called the 

Yurvati procedure. At the pinnacle of his career, 

Dr. Yurvati was a 10-year medical professor, was 

chair of the Board of Surgery and later executive 

director, and published a significant number of 

surgery cases. Now an emeritus professor at the 

University of North Texas Health Science Center, 

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. 

Yurvati’s career indeed soared to great heights. 

Renowned nationally and internationally as 

an academic cardiothoracic surgeon, he left a 

significant mark on the medical world. 

Fast forward to the present, and Dr. Yurvati’s 

journey has become one founded in fortitude. 

Little did he know that life’s unexpected twists 

would soon redefine his purpose and challenge 

his resilience. Life truly had its own plans. 

From Surgeon to 

Caregiver to Patient. 

In a cruel twist of fate, Dr. Yurvati’s life took a 

sharp turn when his beloved wife, Sharon, 

suffered a thrombotic stroke. The seasoned 

surgeon transitioned seamlessly into the role 

of a caregiver, navigating the challenges of 

supporting his soulmate through recovery.


As if the Fates themselves were orchestrating his 

narrative, Dr. Yurvati faced another staggering 

blow in 2020—a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, 

an incurable cancer of the bone marrow. The 

surgeon turned caregiver became a patient, 

forced to confront the harsh realities of his own 

mortality. 

A Continuation of Life and Legacy. 

When asked about how he plays with the cards 

dealt to him, Dr. Yurvati’s positive outlook on 

life shines through. “It’s resiliency… Every time 

there’s a complication, instead of letting it get 

to you, you just [have] to figure out, ‘How am I 

going to get over that bump? How am I going 

to keep going?’ I think the driving force is also 

Sharon—taking care of her. We’re going to be 

married 50 years next year. It’s like half a century 

of being with somebody, and having that focus 

and that being my soulmate, I think that’s kind of 

the driving force that makes me want to continue 

[to] push.”

With a rollercoaster ride of a life, setbacks did 

not hold Dr. Yurvati aback. His situation needed 

him to change, and so he had to—it turned out it 

was for the better.

Mary Albert grew up on a small farm in Central 

Illinois with a curiosity for the world. Exploring 

the world through youth exchanges and then 

finishing her studies in Switzerland, Mary found 

out that the more she saw of the world, the more 

she wanted to see. She chose the travel and 

hospitality industry as a way to feed her hunger 

for travel. In the process of traveling, she saw 

many of the great and wonderful things that God 

put in this world. He gave every place in the

world something special—one just has to open 

their eyes and their heart to see it. God also gave 

Mary the gift of writing, so she can tell the stories 

not only of the places He made but also of the 

miracles that He performs in our daily lives. Mary 

befriended Renee at an ICCM conference, and 

as their friendship grew, Renee started helping 

Mary with her faith journey by sharing her own. 

This became the inspiration behind Faith From: 

A Mother’s Soul Moves Mountains.

Albert H. Yurvati, , DO, PhD, DFACOS, FACOS, FICS, FAHA, is an 

emeritus professor at the University of North Texas Health Science 

Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. He grew up in 

Allentown, Pennsylvania, and left for the US Army, where he met his soul 

mate, Sharon. 

After medical school, he completed two residencies 

and was an academic cardiothoracic surgeon 

of national and international renown. When 

Sharon suffered an acute thrombotic stroke, he 

transitioned to become a caregiver. In 2020, 

he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, 

an incurable cancer of the bone marrow, 

and he transitioned yet again, this time to 

a patient.

where he met baby Victor. And the adventures began… 

Jan Atkinson is an attorney who has been writing short stories for over 

forty years. The concept of a “tactibarrlemac” (camel rabbit cat) 

was created while in college. When her grandson, Victor, was 

an infant she began entertaining him with stories about the 

funny animal named Tacti and his adventures. Jan is a 

Baltimore native now living in Raleigh and enjoys 

being “Nan,” playing golf, and cheering for her 

Maryland sports teams.
