Centennial College is proud to be a part of a rich history of education in this province and in
this city. We acknowledge that we are on the treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of
the Credit First Nation and pay tribute to their legacy and the legacy of all First Peoples of
Canada, as we strengthen ties with the communities we serve and build the future through
learning and through our graduates.
Today, the traditional meeting place of Toronto is still home to many Indigenous People from
across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work in the communities
that have grown in the treaty lands of the Mississaugas. We acknowledge that we are all
treaty people and accept our responsibility to honour all our relations.

DEAN’S MESSAGE
The Business School at Centennial College is delighted to present the 2021-2023 Scholarly
Activity Report, marking the third edition of this report and underscoring our enduring
commitment to education within and beyond the classroom.
Comprising five departments predominantly located at Progress Campus—Legal and
Administrative Studies; Accounting, Financial Services, Math and Economics; Business and
Management Studies; Marketing and Retail; and International Business and Logistics—the
Business School remains dedicated to fostering academic excellence.
Our newly launched Strategic Plan, Business Connected 2022-2027, aims to leverage our
established foundation and continue equipping our students with the knowledge and skills
essential for enhancing their employability. Moreover, the plan envisages the introduction of new
degree programs within our school, for which the scholarly activities showcased in this
publication serve as a foundational cornerstone.
At Centennial College, we have embraced the principles of Boyer’s model of scholarship. Boyer’s
model advocates for a reevaluation of scholarship within higher education, emphasizing diverse
forms of scholarly engagement and recognizing the qualitative dimension of teaching. This model
delineates Discovery, Integration, Application, and Teaching as the four fundamental functions of
scholarship, urging educational institutions to acknowledge and value all forms of scholarly
pursuits.
The faculty, staff, and management at The Business School exemplify scholarly excellence and
research prowess not only within the domain of business but also across various interdisciplinary
fields. This is evident through the diverse range of contributions featured in this report, which
highlights our department’s unwavering dedication to scholarly endeavors. Our faculty and staff
have actively engaged in writing scholarly articles and books, conducting research projects,
delivering presentations at conferences, pursuing further educational endeavors, actively
participating in community initiatives, and garnering an array of prestigious awards and
accolades.
This Scholarly Activity Report serves as a testament to the outstanding achievements of our
faculty and staff from 2021-2023, celebrating their exemplary work within the framework of
Boyer’s model.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all our faculty, staff, and management for their invaluable
contributions to this report and for their steadfast commitment and dedication to their craft,
thereby epitomizing the essence of Boyer’s framework of scholarship.
Pounsford, Ruck & Krais (in press). Leading the listening organization: Creating
organizations that flourish. Chapter contribution. Routledge.
Before joining Centennial College as a full-time instructor in 2022, I had a long
career in marketing and corporate communications. In addition to teaching, I'm
also a doctoral student, which gives me a chance to "nerd out" on the aspects of
marketing that always fascinated me. Listening, for example, is a critical skill for
individuals and organizations, and I was curious about whether this skill is being
developed in graduate business programs. My contribution to this book was to
analyze the curricula of some of the world's top business schools to see if they
are teaching future leaders how to listen. Based on this, I am incorporating more
material about listening into my branding and project management courses.
Fraser, L. (2023). How do dimensions of quality contribute to levels of
internationalization. The Quality Management Forum. Volume 49, Number 3.
The Kano model is the most published theory on the topic of quality. It has been
cited more than 17,300 times (Matzler, K., & Hinterhuber, H., 1998.) Studies of
the Kano model have been conducted in specific industries and through a range
of specific products. However, studies have not been completed on the use of
the Kano model for a specific product line in a broad range of countries. Though
organizations realize that a higher worldwide standard of quality is expected by
consumers, it is not clear which quality attributes are basic requirements, which
quality attributes will generate loyalty, or which quality attributes will cause a
reduction in market share when products are shipped internationally.
Lorraine Fraser
In this paper, I deconstruct the dimensions of quality as per the Kano model, and
as they relate to product quality alone (not service quality) and propose the
dimensions of product quality that affect internationalization and in what way. I
posit that customer satisfaction influences levels of internationalization of
products. A total of five propositions are detailed. While incorporating theories
and literature findings into my analysis and synthesis, I refer to the case of a highend
speaker manufacturer that forms part of my industrial experience to further
illustrate the five dimensions of quality and their impact on internationalization.
This research article provides several recommendations for future research
including understanding the voice of the customer through customer-service
calls, other avenues for further collection of data and classification of attributes.
There is further opportunity for studies to be conducted across various countries
for further understanding of consumer satisfaction on various levels of
internationalization.
and Operations Mgt. 8 (2), 134-164. ISSN: 2383-2525.
To assess whether this research is consistent with the Boyer's model, it must
meet the six important requirements of the Boyer's model, including an addition
to the body of knowledge, having discipline expertise, being replicable,
documentable, peer-reviewed, and significant.
The research is a perfect fit for the Boyer's Model for scholarship. It develops and
tests a unique model using trusted qualitative and quantitative techniques. The
research analyzed responses of relevant field experts in the apparel sector. The
analysis was carried out employing scientifically recognized techniques, i.e.
Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The research is based on expert interviews
and a large-scale survey of expert stakeholders. All steps in data gathering and
analysis were well documented, and the research was published in a scholarly
peer-reviewed international scientific journal. The outcome of the research is vital
for one of the largest sectors, i.e. apparel, and its implications are very important
for industry professionals, academicians, researchers, and government bodies.
Owing to its exploratory and highly systematic nature and publication in a
scholarly peer-reviewed journal, the research leans toward discovery
scholarship.
Ram from Srimad Valmıki Ramayan. Consciousness-Based Leadership and
Management, Volume 1: Vedic and Other Philosophical Approaches to Oneness
and Flourishing, 175.
This research explored leadership traits based on classical pieces of literature
and brought its practical application to the contemporary management field.
Some of the classical books reviewed were deemed as religious books, when
explored in-depth through proper qualitative studies, they provide many insights
into leadership theories, including the leadership requirement of self-realization.
Self-realization allows a leader to display their authentic self, without mimicking
other personalities. This chapter deals with how to exhibit those traits naturally
through a simple, natural process.
Tracey Bissett
Elizabeth Williams
PhD, MBA, P. Eng, CSC. Faculty member of the Marketing and Retail
Department.
Ko, A. (December 2022). Presented to Sheffield Business School MBA students
about my entrepreneurial journey and marketing concepts.
I was invited to speak as a guest lecturer to my friend’s MBA class at the
Sheffield University Management School in the United Kingdom about my
journeys as an entrepreneur, creating profiling and social targeting technologies
to aid in the digital marketing industry. This experience covered two of the four
types of scholarship in Boyer’s Model of Scholarly Activity: Application and
Teaching.
In terms of Teaching, I prepared instructional materials in the form of a slide deck
which I presented to the students as I talked about my experiences starting up
my company and the various trials and tribulations that I had to go through
during this time. After the presentation, many students came up to me to ask
further questions about the guest lecture and my company, particularly about the
ins and outs of the digital marketing world and how their current classes are
preparing them for their post-graduate journey.
This leads me to the second scholarship, Application. In giving words of advice
about my current experiences in the world of advertising, I was helping them
grow professionally as the vast majority of the students wanted to explore a
career in that field after they graduate from the MBA program.
The guest lecture taught me that students in today’s classrooms, regardless of
location, are more receptive (and hungry) to learn everything they can about the
“real world” through shared experiences rather than just reading theoretical
concepts from a textbook that may or may not already be outdated. These
experiences help prepare them for life after they graduate, which is what the
main role of a post-secondary institution should be to help their students.
MA. Faculty member of the Marketing and Retail Department.
Williams, E. (2022, June). Canadian Communications Association annual
conference. Presented "Building trust in uncertain times." Online.
In marketing, trust is the coin of the realm. Everything a marketer does is
concerned with building and maintaining customer trust. The paper presented at
the Canadian Communications Association was based on an annual ranking of
Canada’s most trusted brands for 2020 by the University of Victoria. I wondered
how some of these brands managed to post huge increases in consumer trust
during the pandemic, while others slipped badly in the rankings. A colleague and I
analysed the social media, advertising, and public relations activities of the brands
with the biggest changes in their trust scores and discovered that connecting with
consumers in those scary early days of the pandemic was instrumental in building
trust while keeping quiet had the opposite effect. I use this data in my branding
and marketing classes to show students the direct connection between what
marketers do and how that shows up in households across Canada.
Microsoft Office Online.”
NISOD is an organization that promotes teaching, learning, and leadership excellence
at community and technical colleges. During COVID, we were all pushed into the
virtual world of learning in which some of us had never taught before. Many institutions
struggled with how to teach technology courses online. Over the years, other colleges
have reached out to me asking about our Centennial College Microsoft Office courses
(COMP and OAGN) and Industry MOS exams, and how we do what we do so
successfully (with 6000+ MOS exams conducted each year)! So in the spirit of growing
and sharing, and learning how to manage online technology courses, I provided a
recorded conference session to NISOD. In this session, I identify issues with teaching
Microsoft Office online and recommend solutions; identify tools that support teaching
Microsoft Office skills; explain how to set up a Certiport Authorized Test Center
(CATC), and discuss how to provide an opportunity for stakeholders (students,
employees, and community) to obtain Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification.
Centennial College, Business School has been operating a CATC and providing MOS
industry certification opportunities to students for more than seven years. It takes a
dedicated faculty team to make this happen, and we are still going strong! Go Team!
The Teacher for Learning Badge challenges participants to design effective learning
activities and experiences grounded in research-based principles of learning. The
Experimenter Badge asks participants to try new ways of connecting with students and
presenting concepts; to be curious and creative. The Technologist Badge builds on the
Experimenter Badge and explores digital literacy, identifying and highlighting the barriers
some students face with regard to digital literacy and also begins to employ design
thinking in their work. The Curator Badge builds on what many participants already
engage in: presenting the best and most accessible, appropriate, and engaging
materials available to learners. The Scholar Badge challenges participants to view their
classroom, whether in-person or online, as a research lab and to explore how they might
improve their teaching practice and positively affect learner outcomes. The Scholarship
of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) involves an awareness and appreciation of effective,
research-based, discipline-appropriate approaches for examining one's own practice.
The Collaborator Badge asks participants to use technology tools to build intentional
connections with others, to pose and solve problems collaboratively, and to strengthen
independent thought. This mimics, to a great extent, what we ask students to do in
group assignments and is key to building digital capacity for teaching and learning.
business, leadership, and Trade”. Moderator. Women in Business and Leadership
Forum at the Toronto Board of Trade.
My participation in the Women in Business and Leadership Forum was a fantastic
opportunity to help participants gain a shared understanding of the challenges faced by
women across sectors and the tools they can use to grow in their field. The forum
provided a platform to synthesize knowledge from various disciplines. My moderation of
the panel "Empowering Young Women; Case Studies of Young Women in Business,
Leadership, and Trade" facilitated a holistic exploration of young women's experiences
in business and global trade. The interdisciplinary nature of the discussions ensured a
comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by young
women in these domains. The event elevated participants' understanding of the hurdles
faced by women, particularly by highlighting the personal experiences of the presenters.
The panelists shared their real-world experiences and shed light on actionable strategies
for empowering young women in their professional journeys. This practical knowledge
extends beyond the confines of academia, reaching a wider audience and fostering a
culture of mentorship and support. As a moderator, my active engagement with
panelists and participants fostered a shared learning environment, promoting the
dissemination of knowledge and the cultivation of mentorship networks.
Higher education facilities are looking to transform the educational process and
align with the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and leveraging
ubiquitous technology becomes imperative. However, several barriers continue to
persist in higher education. Educators often feel they lack the readiness, training,
and support necessary to seamlessly and confidently integrate Information
Communication Technology (ICT) into the classroom. These articles address these
challenges by delving into strategies for educators to embrace the technology and
obtain the necessary tools to do so. The focus is on fostering an understanding of
when, where, and how these tools can be effectively integrated for maximum
impact within the classroom environment. Educators are on the front line to being
agents of change. However, they need to understand better the relationship
between teaching, technology, and pedagogy to transform the educational process.
My participation in The Canadian Association of Student Financial Aid
Administrators Conference (June 2021) was a great opportunity to help participants
gain a shared understanding of the challenges faced by post-secondary students
due to the pandemic as well as the impact on their finances. The conference
provided a forum to share my observations in conjunction with independent survey
findings and statistics in the 90-minute workshop session created and facilitated
entitled “Financial Fitness in 2021: A Tale of Postsecondary Students, the
Pandemic and their Finances”. Throughout the session, financial aid administrators
from Canadian Universities and Colleges learned the financial implications of the
pandemic, financial Impacts on & interests of postsecondary students as well as
how to support postsecondary students’ financial fitness. The session culminated
with participants working through student case studies and applying what they had
learned with respect to money mindsets, strategies, tips, and resources to support
students, practice in overcoming objections raised by students as well as the
opportunity to share their experiential-based advice applicable to the case. The
participants appreciated the opportunity to apply the lessons shared in the session
and highlighted that they felt better prepared to support students in their financial
fitness journey after attending. Specifically, they left the session equipped with new
perspectives on how people think about money as well as tangible tips and
resources to share with students once back on their campuses.
LL.M, LL.M. Faculty member of the Legal and Administrative Department
Spadacini, D. (2023). Instructed two-day Professional CPD to lawyers and
paralegals: Small Claims Court: a complete guide FOR NEW ADVOCATES.
My involvement in the development and delivery of the continued professional
development course for lawyers and paralegals, Small Claims Court: A Complete
Guide, commenced with a collaborative effort from colleagues and recent graduates
of Centennial College. A combination of research and innovative ideas formed the
content of the 2-day Law Society of Ontario accredited course which applied
towards the annual professional development hours for lawyers and paralegals
licensed to practice law or provide legal services in Ontario. I delivered the course to
legal professionals, both established and new to the profession as well as students
during a live interactive and informative session incorporating interdisciplinary
perspectives, connecting theoretical concepts to real-world legal practice, and
synthesizing diverse knowledge sources. This mixture yielded a meaningful
discussion of legal theory, court procedures, and concepts of integrating practical
skills and career preparation. In addition to the benefit of the substantive content of
the course, a hidden by-product improving the advancement of education was
created. When constructing and delivering a continuing professional development
course, the combination of original research and the integration of knowledge from
various sources has a lasting impact on the expansion and questioning of my
current knowledge in the field of law. Exploring fresh perspectives on legal matters
and procedures, consolidating findings, and generating innovative ideas that
contribute to the intellectual environment of the legal profession also brings new
insights and knowledge, benefiting both the legal practice and the broader academic
community.
the Marketing and Retail Department.
Burton, K. (2023) Revised BUSN112, BUSN117, and BUSN118 Course Outlines
to better reflect PVLOs.
As part of my review of my program for an admission change, we saw that some of
our Program Vocational Learning Outcomes needed to be addressed more explicitly.
This started the revision planning process for BUSN112, BUSN117, and BUSN118.
As an educator, I use Bloom’s Taxonomy as a model for scaffolding skills and
content knowledge across weeks and semesters, while also respecting the workload
implications for students. Specifically, one of the things I wanted to do was to revise
some of my Course Learning Outcomes in BUSN117 and BUSN118 to better reflect
the culminating nature of a type of capstone 10-week project that students were
being asked to complete in Semester 2. As part of a semester one assignment, a
significant number of students typically indicate that one of their career goals is to
one day start their own small business, and understanding how to begin that process
is one of the Program Learning Outcomes I wanted to better scaffold over the course
of the two semesters.
I have been collecting feedback on these three courses over the past few semesters,
asking students to anonymously review the workload and difficulty through the
Survey feature in eCentennial. I learned that for many students, the difficulty was not
necessarily the issue, but rather it was keeping track of the number of assignments
across their courses. I decided BUSN112, BUSN117, and BUSN118 would lose one
assignment each, and I rebalanced the other assessments across the courses to try
and reduce some of the stress points at mid-term and at the end of the semester.
I also wanted to formally add Emerging Trends in Business as a topic to BUSN118.
This was done to explicitly address the changing nature of the world of work for our
students. Generative AI is the big 2023-2024 topic, and students need to consider
how they will approach this tool, or any tool that is developed after they have left
school. Some questions we will examine together: “How do you stay informed on
emerging trends in your industry?”, “What effect will this potentially have on my
industry?”, “What skills/experience are likely to be in demand as a result of this?”.
This builds on what students begin in BUSN112 when they assess their current skills
and start mapping their career plans out.
Lam, M. (2021). Developed an assessment that integrated course learning
outcomes, GCEI learning outcomes, and the learning outcomes from guestspeaker
experience.
Mandy Lam
In November 2021, I invited a data expert to share his insights with my students
in BUSN225 – Research Methods and Data Analysis 1. Our guest speaker, Mark
Masongsong, is the CEO of Urban Logiq. Urban Logiq is a company founded on
the mission of using data analysis to inform designs of safer, stronger, and more
resilient cities and communities.
To consolidate learning, I developed and implemented a follow-up assignment
that consisted of two parts: 1) a reflection component, and 2) a business case
study relating to the projects discussed by the guest speaker. The goal of this
activity was to integrate course learning outcomes, GCEI learning outcomes, and
the learning outcomes from the guest speaker experience.
Masongsong shared with my students some of the projects his company has
embarked on, including developing a city in Hawaii by tracking data on commute
patterns, designing transit systems to better serve marginalized communities in
Vancouver, and designing a safer city of Brooklyn, NY, when a disproportionate
number of pedestrians were getting hit by cars. Students learned that the
common denominator amongst all these projects was the importance of
understanding human needs behind numbers and figures. As Mark mentioned,
"it's not just a math problem, it's a human problem". Students also gained advice
on how they will use data analysis and statistics in their own areas of study,
which include accounting and supply chain operations.
Business and Logistics Department.
Mauro Spies
Spies, M. (2021-2023) Adapted and delivered multiple online Global Logistics
and Principles of Freight Forwarding courses for International Business
Management Suzhou Centennial College program, Suzhou Centennial College,
Suzhou, China.
Suzhou colleagues deliver Canadian content of Global Logistics and Principles of
Freight Forwarding courses for the Suzhou Centennial College International
Business Diploma program. I have adapted the course content and format to an
online delivery mode. The students attend synchronously in an on-campus smart
classroom while I deliver the sessions from Canada online. With priceless
support from Heng Deng as the teaching assistant focusing on class
management, administrative functions, and their Learning Management System,
as well as from Eddy Leong, the Suzhou Centennial College program
coordinator. The courses have been offered in English to Chinese students
alternately in the Fall and in the Winter semesters since Fall 2021. For instance,
Fall 2023 Global Logistics course had its last class on December 28th, 2023
following Suzhou's own schedule.
According to Boyer's model of scholarship, this opportunity can be seen as,
Integration and Teaching types. It is a collaborative environment for both sides.
Suzhou CC contributes with the appropriate environment and infrastructure, their
cohorts, and their knowledge of the culture. While from our side we contribute
with the course content and the online teaching skills that align with the students'
learning requirements. We adapted not only the slides and other resources but
also the way we deliver the online format. Only the smart classroom is connected
to the Zoom meeting. Students interact synchronously while in the smart
classroom and asynchronously when they get access to the class recordings.
Making it a hybrid between the in-person and online delivery methods.
Founder and president of RA Retirement Advisors. For over 12 years I’ve helped
people plan for a successful and fulfilling retirement.
Ravi Subramanium
Richard Atkinson
I’ve built a new knowledge of retirement through researching what makes for a
successful retirement. This included gathering information through detailed
library research, and from friends, acquaintances, and others, using various
interviewing techniques.
The result of my investigation is five published books (Don’t Just Retire – Live It,
Love It! Strategies for Retiring Right! Why Me? And No Gold Watch! Life After
Work: Live It, Love it! and Coaching Clients for Retirement: A Primer). The
intended readership is those between the ages of 45 to 65 plus the newly retired.
I also created two workbooks, The First Step and Strategies for Retiring Right!
both pre-retirement planning guides, plus a ten (10) module self-directed course.
My books, workbooks, articles, workshops, and presentations are for anyone
contemplating retirement. The materials are also used by financial industry
personnel (i.e. financial advisors and wealth managers) to help guide clients
enhance their life after work (i.e. Coaching Clients for Retirement: A Primer).
As part of my practice, I facilitate workshops and make presentations, primarily
boomers, to assist their exploration as a retired person. The information,
exercises, group discussions, and true-to-life cases, is intended to encourage
participants take a proactive interest in their retirement.
