BURNSIDE PARK will see 

extra monitoring and new 

signage installed in the next 

fortnight to help dissuade 

freedom camping. 

The issue has been raised 

with Waimairi Ward city 

councillor Sam MacDonald 

and Ilam MP Hamish 

Campbell. 

MacDonald said he was 

contacted 10 days ago about 

five to six campers who were 

spotted at the park. 

“There are two issues at 

hand: One being people leaving 

rubbish and 

littering. 

The second 

is inside the 

park, freedom 

camping is 

prohibited but 

outside of the 

park, freedom 

campers can 

stay up to two 

nights.

effort to dissuade people from 

freedom camping in general. 

At the moment, it’s only 

happening at Burnside Park 

that we know of, but we are also 

monitoring

of rubbish left behind, possibly 

some defecation, and some 

damage. We get a whole lot of 

issues raised at the electorate

freedom campers have been 

raised . . . I believe this is one 

issue we can solve.” 

Burnside Park Tennis Club 

president Richard Wild said 

the club contacted MacDonald 

after the campers were seen 

taking up the club’s parking. 

“My understanding was the 

fact they were parking in the 

club’s car parks (which) meant 

our members couldn’t park in 

them. If it’s impacting the clubs 

in the park in terms of reducing 

parking and causing mess, we 

will have a dim view of it. 

“But, it depends on the 

council’s local policy to 

determine what happens next. 

“It’s also about the club’s 

security, I’m not saying the 

campers were the ones who 

did it, but the tennis club has 

been broken into a few times 

over the last few months and 

has sustained some vandalism.” 

MacDonald asked city 

council staff to install signage, 

which will happen this week or 

next. 

“We have also approached 

and instructed Armaguard to 

monitor for freedom campers 

in the area.”

Zonta ‘safelet’ fundraiser offers 

the vulnerable peace of mind

WHEN RETIRED Bishopdale 

resident Ann North became a 

widow, she wanted extra safety 

and support. 

That’s why the 80-year-old 

purchased a safety bracelet/ 

watch that detects falls, monitors 

her heart rate, activates a discreet 

alarm for help, and allows her 

to get in touch quickly with her 

emergency contacts. 

“I purchased one, being 

recently widowed – this allows 

me to contact any of my 

guardians if I happen to fall or 

need help. 

“This gives my family peace 

of mind. I liked the idea that 

there are no ongoing monthly 

payments,” Ann said. 

Through Zonta, she initiated 

raising just over $19,000 for 48 

of the HaloGuard wearable SOS 

alarms to donate to others in 

need. They will be distributed by 

family violence support network 

the Christchurch Aunties. 

Ann has been a part of the 

Zonta Club of Christchurch- 

Canterbury for 26 years. 

“Each year, the Zonta Club 

has speakers representing their 

charities and the club votes on 

where they would like their

Ann said the money was raised 

through ventures, such as a 

handbag sale, a winter Christmas 

house trail, and an auction. 

The bracelet comes with access 

to the HaloGuard app, which 

works by sending an alarm to 

a person’s emergency contacts, 

along with precise location, and 

live audio. 

HaloGuard founder Sharron 

Jones said it’s important for 

people to know what they can do 

in an emergency. 

“The device gives women, 

workers, people in family 

violence and those in vulnerable 

situations a circle of connection 

and care. It takes a single push 

of a button to get the people who 

care on the line. 

“Sometimes, it won’t be for an 

emergency – sometimes people 

just need a bit of support or 

someone to talk to. We’ve offered 

the Aunties a $100 discount per 

device. It’s great to be working 

with them. 

“We’d like to think no one has 

to set off the alarm but at least 

with the alarm, people can feel 

a bit safer and secure out and 

about.” 

Jones said the bundles the 

Aunties will receive – which 

includes the bracelet (a Samsung 

Galaxy Watch 4), a charger, and 

three years of full access to the 

HaloGuard mobile and watch 

apps – usually sell for $499.

by HaloGuard technical support

FORMER ST Thomas’ College 

student Daniel Prescott has 

placed 66th in the men’s U20 

cross country at the world 

championships in Belgrade, 

Serbia. 

Prescott finished the 8km race 

in 26min 7sec. He was one of 92 

athletes competing. 

The 18-year-old was the third 

best placed Kiwi, behind Matt 

Hill and Elliott Pugh, who finished 

within a tenth of a second 

of each other in 48th and 49th 

respectively. 

Prescott will attend Providence 

College in the United States from 

August. He is in contention to 

run the 1500m at the junior world 

championships in Peru (the squad 

will be named in mid-April). 

The U20 cross country event 

was dominated by East African 

athletes – Kenyans Samuel 

Kiribathi and Matthew Kipkoech 

Kipruto were first and third, with 

Ethiopian Mezgebu Sime second. 

The top-15 finishers were 

all from Kenya, Ethiopia and 

Uganda. 

Miss Canty’s focus on community 

Paige Sullivan was 

recently crowned Miss 

Canterbury. Reporter 

Sasha Watson spoke 

with the community 

advocate about her 

motivations 

BEYOND physical appearance, 

the Miss Canterbury pageant 

emphasises values such as 

leadership, community service 

and advocacy. 

That’s why Paige Sullivan, this 

year’s winner, said the pageant 

perfectly aligned with her. 

Sullivan is a lawyer who will be 

admitted to the bar in June, 

and a trustee of many charities 

and organisations. 

“Working in the community 

started as a hobby but it’s my life 

now,” the 23-year-old said. 

She is a trustee and secretary 

of the Empowerment Trust New 

Zealand, which works to prevent 

violence with a skills-based approach. 

She is also a trustee and committee 

chair of Te Tahi Youth, 

which provides free support to 

youth, from health to counselling 

to employment support and 

coaching. 

“I am also a trustee for Arts 

Access Aotearoa, which advocates 

for artists in prison, disability and 

mental health communities,” Sullivan 

said. 

As part of Miss Canterbury, 

she hosted a fashion show, raising 

$9000 for the I Am Hope charity, 

which provides youth with mental 

health support. 

Sullivan grew up in Rolleston. 

Her parents, Gabrielle and 

Matthew were involved in Lincoln 

Rotary; Sullivan joined the club 

when she was 11-years-old and 

became its youngest president in 

June 2022 (until July 2023). 

She moved to Halswell in mid- 

2022 with her partner and best 

friend, Will Poultney, an IT senior 

workspace engineer. 

Next week she will graduate 

from Canterbury University with 

a degree in law – commercial, 

property and lifelaw – alongside a 

degree in commerce. 

“I’ve been working in law at 

Lane Neave in the city centre for 

about a year and a half. 

“When I was younger, I used to 

argue with my parents a lot 

. . . I also really enjoy getting my 

point across, so it’s the right career 

choice,” she said. 

The Miss Canterbury 

competition was Sullivan’s first 

time in a pageant; she said it was 

opposite to what she thought it 

would be. 

“I grew up watching Miss 

Universe and Miss World so I did 

think Miss Canterbury would 

be as stereotypical and based on 

looks. 

“It’s focused more on charity 

and community, something 

I’m already very passionate about. 

“My nana, who died from 

cancer in 2013, and her sister 

also competed in the pageant in 

the 1950s. I signed up in their 

memory.” 

Sullivan’s grandmother, Dianna 

McFarlane, won the competition 

in 1958.

Sullivan also wanted to do the 

pageant for herself. 

“I was looking for a way to boost 

my confidence and build myself 

up as a lot of what I do is for other 

people. I grew a lot as a person. 

“The most important thing was 

being true to myself and 

not doing anything that I wouldn’t 

normally do just for the points. 

“The biggest compliment I received 

was from a friend who was 

following my Miss Canterbury 

Facebook page. She said all of my 

posts sounded like me.” 

Sullivan also won Charity 

Queen, Miss Positivity and best 

in interview during the crowning 

ceremony on March 17. 

She’s looking forward to competing 

in Miss New Zealand next 

year and then representing the 

country at an international pageant, 

which will likely be in Egypt 

or China.

Air Force ‘hero’ on display 

THE AIR Force Museum of 

New Zealand’s new P-3K2 

Orion will be on display for the 

first time at four special open 

days from April 18-21. 

The Orion is a national hero. 

The RNZAF’s large four engine 

reconnaissance, search and 

rescue and anti-submarine 

warfare aircraft flew for 54 

years during its career and 

makes for an impressive sight. 

The public viewings will 

coincide with the launch of 

a new exhibition and short 

film Orion: The Story of an 

Extraordinary Aircraft at the 

museum. 

NZ4203 has been 

reassembled after its epic 

trip from RNZAF Base 

Woodbourne last year and the 

public will have a chance to 

go out to the hangar and view 

it up close over the four days, 

including the weekend, during 

museum hours. 

The Orion’s road trip through 

the Lewis Pass to Christchurch 

in September last year attracted 

a huge amount of interest so 

the museum wanted to make 

the aircraft available to view 

as soon as possible, museum 

communications manager 

David King said. 

“It was disassembled for the 

road trip and its wings, engines, 

propellers and undercarriage 

are now all back together. Its 

tail section can’t go on because 

we do not have a hangar high 

enough to fit it in. 

“We’re also expecting to get a 

newly retired C-130H Hercules 

next year and we are developing 

plans to build them a new 

home but this will take time. 

“This will be the only 

chance to see the Orion for the 

foreseeable future – and the 

aim is to get as many people as 

possible along to have a closeup 

look at this extraordinary 

aircraft and learn about its 

incredible history of service.’’ 

Visiting the Orion will mean 

a short walk to the historic 

World War 2-era hangar and 

a walk around the exterior 

of NZ4203. Tours will start 

after 10am with the final tour 

departing at about 3pm to allow 

time to get to the hangar and 

back. 

The interior will not be on 

display because the aircraft is 

in a conservation state but its 

tail components (empennage) 

and magnetic anomaly detector 

(MAD boom) or stinger will be 

there to see. 

NZ4203 is the only Orion 

in the RNZAF’s fleet of six to 

be conserved. It flew 27,000 

hours in its 54-year career 

and performed extraordinary 

service for the RNZAF and for 

New Zealand.

helped by a modern eight-speed 

automatic. Even a decent amount 

of cargo on board doesn’t blunt 

the engine’s high energy levels and 

work rate. 

This is among the most relaxing 

and capable vans I have driven. 

The 8-speed automatic feels right 

at home in the Staria, so much so 

that you would think it was born 

to live life in a commercial. Staria 

owners get a transmission that 

revels in the rigours of the day-today 

grind of every day van life. 

A spacious, light, airy, and 

modern cabin is provides an 

excellent workspace most drivers 

will enjoy. Lowered beltlines and 

expansive side windows offer 

excellent visibility and create a 

feeling of openness. 

The load area, while not as 

generous some, most notably the 

Hiace, is still competitive with 

4935 litres of cargo capacity. Most 

importantly it’s big enough to fit a 

full-size pellet. 

Driver information is delivered 

via a front display screen, and 

touch-based centre fascia, and 

there is a well-sorted suite of 

safety technology including 

forward collision avoidance assist. 

Lifting the Staria to the top of 

its ride comfort game is a modern 

multi-link rear suspension, while 

rejigged brake callipers and 

discs provide strong reassuring 

stopping power. 

For a tall-ish van, this one 

is composed, balanced, and 

surprisingly agile, when driven 

briskly over undulating terrain, 

and shows an unexpected 

playful side. This isn’t normally 

programmed into the DNA of 

vans, so it’s a great but rare find. 

After being sold on the strong 

showing of the suspension, the 

steering was less endearing and 

let down by a lack of road feel, and 

not engaging with the driver as 

fully as it could or should be.
