For Inloco, the “Alleys: Regional and Local Perspectives” project holds particular relevance as the
ways people claim spaces in small alleys resemble urban art practices. This Initiative curated by
Dr. Khaled Alawadi, the first UAE national scholar in sustainable urbanism and an Assistant Professor
at Khalifa University extends beyond just a public talk and incorporates the temporary sikka
display, which brings to life the ambiance of a traditional alleyway.
INLOCO
This hidden gem in Dubai provides
a sanctuary where visitors can unwind
in the shade and rejuvenate
amidst the urban art milieu. Access
to Inloco Gallery is through a lush alleyway,
embellished with flowers, carefully selected
vintage furniture, and carpets, setting a
tranquil stage for the art that lies within. As
dusk settles, the space is gently lit with warm
fairy lights, fostering an inviting environment
for intimate discussions about art. Within the
Sikka, visitors are presented with the chance
to delve into the photo works of Dr. Khaled
Alawadi, showcased in a series that pays
homage to the essence of alleyways.
Through initiatives like the public talk
“Alleys: Regional and Local Perspectives,”
hosted by Inloco Gallery, Dr. Alawadi has
significantly contributed to the discourse
on urban design. The project illustrates the
transformative effect of small-scale, grassroots
initiatives, highlighting the essential
role of alleys in improving the livability and
vibrancy of urban settings. This discussion,
which delves into the narrow, hidden pathways
that serve as lifelines of social interaction
and connectors of communities, reflects
a deeper understanding of alleys, or ‘sikkak’,
as holders of historical and cultural layers
and as crucial elements in urban planning
and community interaction.
The significance of Dr. Alawadi’s work
becomes even more pronounced against
the backdrop of a significant shift in urban
planning within the UAE, from pedestrian-focused
designs to a more car-centric and mega-scale
project orientation. This evolution in
urban design, while leading to the development
of gated communities, tower complexes,
and large shopping malls, needs to pay
more attention to the vibrancy and diversity
that pedestrian-oriented spaces bring to
urban life. Such spaces, as highlighted in
historical districts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi
and evolving residential areas, are not only
crucial for facilitating pedestrian movement
but also act as lively venues for social gath-
erings, contributing to the rich tapestry of
urban life.
Dr. Alawadi’s devoted research and public
engagement illuminate the critical need for a
paradigm shift back towards human-scale
urbanism, where diversity, sustainability, and
community engagement are prioritized. This
approach to urban planning advocates for
environments that not only cater to economic
activities but also enrich their inhabitants’
social and cultural lives. By integrating the
essence of Dr. Alawadi’s insights with the
broader trends of urban development, a
compelling case is made for the reintegration
of pedestrian-friendly spaces into modern
urban planning.
As urban landscapes continue to evolve,
advocacy for preserving and appreciating
pedestrian-friendly, human-scale spaces
highlights the importance of traditional urban
elements and their adaptation to contemporary
needs. This perspective not only
ensures the livability and vibrancy of cities
but also fosters urban spaces that are economically
vibrant, socially inclusive, and
culturally rich. Dr. Alawadi’s work, embodying
the spirit of intertwining the language of
science with the visual language, becomes
a crucial touchstone for those seeking to enhance
the quality of urban life, creating more
dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable urban
ecosystems.
www.magzoid.com April 2024
alleys are not only understood as functional
pathways but also as dynamic spaces
where diverse social, cultural, and economic
exchanges unfold. Embracing this holistic
view of alleys enriches the discourse on urban
design by expanding the conceptual
framework to encompass the nuanced dynamics
of everyday urban life.
DR. KHALED
we dug deeper into his idea of alleyways and how the potential of their
growth can be explored in modern urbanism.
What inspired you to initiate the
“Alleys: Regional and Local
Perspectives” project, and
how do you see it contributing
to the discourse on urban design?
Alleys have been neglected in the definition
of urban form even though they have
existed since antiquity and have served a
variety of purposes. My work identifies alleys
as a critical space, especially at the neighborhood
scale. Cities are complex systems
that are agglomerations of a variety of components.
A city’s physical characteristics
are often collectively labelled ‘urban form’,
‘urban typology’, or ‘urban pattern’, and its
combination of street patterns, buildings,
and plots is known as ‘urban grain’. The elements
of urban form not only include buildings,
street patterns, and land parcels, but
also consist of urban blocks, green infrastructure,
and the layout of public spaces.
However, one critical component, alleyways,
has been marginalized in definitions and
analyses of urban form, despite alleys’ major
role in shaping many cities’ urban life and
network systems.
In the realm of urban design discourse,
alleys emerge as indispensable components
within the urban framework, their
significance akin to that of streets and other
tangible urban features. Acknowledging
alleys as pivotal elements in urban fabric,
my professional perspective emphasizes
their transformative role in shaping societal
interactions and fostering community cohesion.
Contrary to prevailing misconceptions
portraying alleys as mere remnants or neglected
spaces within the cityscape, my approach
underscores their intrinsic value as
vital conduits, hosting a myriad of activities
and narratives.
By recognizing alleys as essential corridors,
my work elevates their status within
urban design discourse, advocating for their
integration into comprehensive urban planning
strategies. Through this perspective,
Can you elaborate on how small alleys
and urban art practices intersect, and
what significance they hold within the
context of contemporary urban environments?
Small alleys serve as dynamic canvases
for urban art practices, intersecting with
contemporary urban environments in multifaceted
ways. Within the context of these
narrow passageways, a diverse range of activities
can unfold, spanning from impromptu
art galleries to communal social gatherings
and even spontaneous sporting events. The
significance of these interactions lies in their
ability to transform alleys from overlooked
spaces into vibrant hubs of creativity and
community engagement.
In contemporary urban environments,
alleys emerge as fertile grounds for urban
artists seeking unconventional spaces to express
their creativity. The intimate scale and
distinctive characteristics of alleys provide
a unique backdrop for artistic exploration,
inspiring both established professionals and
emerging talents alike. From the intricate architectural
details to the interplay of light and
shadow, alleys offer a rich tapestry of micro
and macro elements that stimulate artistic
imagination.
Moreover, the visual diversity inherent in
alley environments, including unique color
palettes and architectural features, serves
as a wellspring of inspiration for urban artists.
By harnessing the inherent character of
these spaces, artists have the opportunity
to create site-specific installations that resonate
with the surrounding urban context.
Beyond serving as platforms for artistic expression,
alleys also hold immense potential
to engage the public and foster a sense of
place within urban communities. Through
curated art initiatives and participatory projects,
alleys can be transformed into dynamic
cultural corridors that enrich the urban
experience for residents and visitors alike.
In essence, the intersection of small alleys
and urban art practices underscores
the dynamic interplay between creativity,
community, and the built environment. By
recognizing alleys as both catalysts for artistic
innovation and conduits for social interaction,
contemporary urban environments
can harness their full potential as vibrant and
inclusive spaces for cultural expression and
urban renewal.
In what ways do you believe pedestrian-friendly
spaces, such as the sikka display
at Inloco Gallery, can enhance community
interaction and contribute to the
vibrancy of urban life?
Inloco Alley serves as a beacon of community-driven
revitalization. Inloco Alley sends
a clear message to both professionals and
city builders that modest, small-scale interventions
can yield significant impacts on
community well-being and urban vitality. By
deviating from the tendency towards monumental
development and embracing grassroots
initiatives, Inloco Alley exemplifies how
thoughtful, community-based interventions
can breathe new life into neglected spaces
and enhance the overall quality of urban environments.
Moreover, Inloco Alley serves as a catalyst
for inspiring further bottom-up and community-based
approach, Inloco Alley encourages collaboration
between residents, local businesses,
vibrant, attractive landscapes that prioritize
community needs and aspirations.
Pedestrian-friendly spaces like the sikka
enhance community interaction and urban
vibrancy but also demonstrate the power
of grassroots initiatives in revitalizing urban
have the potential to transform
neglected areas into thriving, livable landscapes
that foster a sense of belonging and
Given the current shift towards car-centric
urban planning in the UAE, what
challenges do you face in advocating
for human-scale urbanism and pedestrian-friendly
designs?
Advocating for human-scale urbanism
and pedestrian-friendly designs in the face
of the current shift towards car-centric urban
planning in the UAE presents several challenges
rooted in the existing urban fabric
and cultural norms. These challenges include:
Lack of walking facilities and infrastructure:
Many areas and developments in the
UAE lack proper sidewalks, crosswalks, and
pedestrian-friendly amenities, making walking
a less viable option for transportation.
Scale of street systems: The massive
scale of street systems and highways in the
UAE prioritizes vehicular movement over pedestrian
access, creating barriers to walking
and discouraging pedestrian-friendly urban
environments.
Long distances between origins and destinations:
The sprawling nature of urban development
in the UAE often results in long
distances between residential areas and
commercial centers, discouraging walking
as a mode of transportation.
Cultural norms favoring door-to-door travel:
People in the region are accustomed to
door-to-door travel, relying heavily on cars
for convenience and speed. This cultural
preference makes walking less appealing,
particularly if it is not perceived as convenient
or efficient.
Challenges posed by the extended summer
season: The harsh climate, particularly
during the extended summer season, poses
significant barriers to walking, further discouraging
pedestrian-friendly urban design
initiatives.
Infrastructure designed by traffic engineers:
The prioritization of cars over pedestrians
in the design of infrastructure systems,
largely led by traffic engineers, perpetuates
a car-centric urban landscape that prioritizes
vehicular movement at the expense of
pedestrian safety and accessibility.
In light of these challenges, alleys emerge
as a critical element in the discourse surrounding
future urban and suburban walkability
in the region. By reimagining alleys as
pedestrian-friendly corridors and community
spaces, urban designers can mitigate some
of the challenges posed by car-centric planning
and create more inclusive and livable
urban environments. Incorporating alleys
into urban design strategies can provide
pedestrian-friendly alternatives, enhance
connectivity, and foster vibrant community
interactions, ultimately promoting a more
sustainable and people-centric approach to
urban development in the UAE.
How do you envision the integration of
traditional urban elements, like alleys and
pedestrian pathways, into modern urban
planning frameworks to create more dynamic,
inclusive, and sustainable urban
ecosystems?
Several projects designed to make use of
alleys’ potential have been initiated in U.S.
cities such as Seattle, Washington D.C.,
Chicago, Vancouver, Baltimore, and Los
Angeles, as well as cities in Europe. However,
most of these programs are narrowly
focused on stormwater management. Only
limited projects in Los Angeles (South Park
Green Alley Network) aimed to encourage
non-motorized transport, increase connectivity
to daily destinations, and facilitate recreational
activities, while other projects, in
Los Angeles and Baltimore, had the objective
of expanding green spaces. In the UAE
and many other regions, such alleyway projects
have not started yet. For that reason,
planners and designers can offer strategies
and policies that could promote the use of
alleyways. For instance, the neighborhood
design and plan of new neighborhoods
should maximize the potential use of alleys.
The alleys need to be functionally planned
to facilitate efficient movement within neighborhoods
by shortening the routes to daily
destinations. Alleys can also transform a
disjointed urban fabric consisting of long urban
blocks into shorter and more connected
blocks, thus improving the directness between
every possible origin and destination
by providing shorter direct paths. However,
an adequate number of alleys need to be
placed strategically to mitigate the street
layout’s drawbacks, which are difficult to
resolve otherwise because once streets are
built, they are difficult to alter.
In retrofitting existing neighborhoods, the
physical condition of alleyways needs to be
improved through paving, landscaping, and
lighting upgrades. For example, alleys from
the Dispersion periods of Dubai and Abu
Dhabi are less suitable for pedestrian use.
They are mainly sandy and full of dirt and
debris. An urban design program to revitalize
those alleys would be necessary to make
them suitable for pedestrians. For example,
the existing alley network could be upgraded
through strategic investment. The UAE’s
hot, arid climate and Islamic traditions could
shape and contextualize the function of alleys.
For instance, Islamic values encourage
the privacy of each house while also promoting
community bonds through the creation
of semi-public spaces where neighbors
can meet. In this way, alleys can serve as
desirable elements in the urban fabric because
they contribute to privacy, promote
social gathering and bonds between neighborhoods,
and enhance the experience of
walking to daily uses such as retail stores
and mosques. The UAE’s harsh climate and
extended summer season discourage any
form of walking if adequate shading is not
available. The practice of mitigating extreme
temperatures through merging landscaping
strategies and building light structures for
shading purposes would modify ambient air
temperatures and enhance thermal comfort
in alleys, thus making walking more desirable.
Moreover, in low-density areas, the
safety of women and children needs to be
guaranteed by ensuring a significant presence
of people or ‘eyes on the street’, or
rather eyes on alleys in this case. This can
be achieved by upgrading the conditions of
alleys through lighting and paving to make
them more suitable for casual meetings and
walking. Finally, allowing some windows and
plot entrances to open towards alleys would
enable informal surveillance of the urban environment.
Alleys that connect disjointed blocks or
provide efficient thoroughfares for pedestrians,
cyclists, and micro-mobility users en
route to daily destinations like mosques,
grocery stores, and schools can be prioritized
for reclamation. In new and existing
neighborhoods alike, alleys can accommodate
a system of landscaping featuring linear
parks, urban farms, playgrounds, and
places of respite. In addition to their social
benefits, linear parks, and urban farms can
improve the microclimate in hot, arid cities
such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai and can provide
locally grown food to local residents as
well as businesses. Likewise, a network of
public spaces can be created by connecting
landscaped and reclaimed alleyways.
One remarkable aspect of autism is the
capacity for intense focus and attention to
detail, traits that often shine through in artistic
endeavors. Many individuals on the spectrum
possess an innate talent for visual arts,
Moreover, art offers a sanctuary—a safe
space where individuals with autism can
unleash their imagination, explore their creativity,
and find solace amidst the chaos of
everyday life. It serves as a form of therapy,
providing a means of self-expression
and empowerment for individuals who may
struggle to navigate the complexities of the
world around them.
In recent years, there has been a growing
recognition of the importance of embracing
neurodiversity within the art world. Galleries,
museums, and cultural institutions worldwide
the artistic landscape. These initiatives not
only raise awareness about autism but also
challenge societal norms and stereotypes,
fostering a more inclusive and accepting
society.
As we commemorate World Autism
Awareness Day, let us reaffirm our commitment
to embracing neurodiversity and celebrating
the talents and achievements of
individuals on the autism spectrum. Let us
recognize the transformative power of art
in breaking down barriers, fostering understanding,
and building bridges of empathy
and compassion. Through art, we can create
a world where everyone, regardless of their
neurodiversity, is valued, respected, and
celebrated for the unique gifts they bring to
As April blooms and the world prepares
to celebrate World Earth Day,
the call for environmental awareness
and action resonates louder
than ever. In the realm of art, this occasion
holds particular significance, as creatives
around the globe utilize their talents to shed
light on pressing ecological issues and inspire
positive change.
Art has always been a powerful medium
for expressing human emotions, thoughts,
and concerns. In recent years, artists have
increasingly turned their attention to the environment,
using their work to raise awareness
about climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution,
and the urgent need for sustainability.
One of the remarkable aspects of art is
its ability to transcend language barriers
and connect with people on a visceral level.
Through paintings, sculptures, installations,
and other forms of artistic expression, artists
communicate the beauty of nature, the fragility
of ecosystems, and the profound impact
of human activity on the planet.
Take, for example, the breathtaking landscape
paintings of artists like Thomas Moran
and Albert Bierstadt from the 19th century.
Their majestic depictions of the American
wilderness captured the imagination of viewers
and played a significant role in the establishment
of national parks, preserving these
natural treasures for future generations.
In the contemporary art world, artists are
exploring innovative ways to address environmental
issues and provoke meaningful dialogue.
From large-scale installations made
from recycled materials to thought-provoking
performance art pieces, these creatives
are pushing boundaries and challenging
perceptions.
One such artist is Olafur Eliasson, whose
immersive installations often explore the
relationship between humans and nature.
In works like “The Weather Project,” which
transformed the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall
into a mesmerizing sunlit space, Eliasson
invites viewers to contemplate their place in
the natural world and consider the consequences
of climate change.
Similarly, photographer Edward Burtynsky
captures the scale and impact of human industry
on the environment through his striking
aerial photographs. From vast open-pit
mines to sprawling urban landscapes, Burtynsky’s
images offer a sobering glimpse
into the consequences of unchecked consumption
and development.
But art is not just a tool for raising awareness;
it also has the power to inspire action
and drive positive change. Through community
art projects, workshops, and collaborations
with environmental organizations,
artists are empowering individuals to take
meaningful steps toward sustainability and
conservation.
For instance, the “Washed Ashore” project,
founded by artist Angela Haseltine
Pozzi, transforms marine debris collected
from beaches into larger-than-life sculptures
of marine animals. By showcasing these
sculptures in public spaces and educational
settings, the project raises awareness about
ocean pollution and encourages communities
to reduce their plastic consumption.
As we celebrate World Earth Day this
April, let us not only admire the beauty of
nature but also reflect on our collective responsibility
to protect it. Through the lens of
art, we can explore complex environmental
issues, foster empathy for the natural world,
and inspire positive action.
Whether it’s through a powerful painting,
a thought-provoking sculpture, or an immersive
installation, artists have the unique ability
to ignite passion, provoke reflection, and
spark change. As we look to the future, let
us harness the transformative power of art to
create a more sustainable and harmonious
relationship with our planet.
In the vast landscape of art history, few names shine as brightly as Henri Matisse. A revolutionary
figure in the realm of modern art, Matisse’s bold colors, expressive brushstrokes, and
daring compositions continue to captivate audiences around the world. Among his many
masterpieces, “The Dessert: Harmony in Red” stands as a testament to his unparalleled
talent and innovative vision.
Painted in 1908, “The Dessert: Harmony
in Red” is a striking example of
Matisse’s Fauvist period, characterized
by its vivid colors and simplified
forms. The painting depicts a sumptuous
interior scene, with a table laden with fruit, a
vase of flowers, and various decorative objects.
Yet, it is not the subject matter itself
that commands attention, but rather Matisse’s
bold and unapologetic use of color.
At first glance, the dominant red hues of
the composition overwhelm the senses, enveloping
the viewer in a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Matisse’s mastery of color theory is
evident in the careful orchestration of tones
and shades, creating a sense of harmony
and balance despite the intensity of the palette.
The reds are punctuated by accents of
green, blue, and yellow, which serve to enliven
the composition and add depth to the
overall arrangement.
One cannot help but be struck by the
sheer joy and exuberance that emanates
from “The Dessert: Harmony in Red.” Matisse’s
brushstrokes are bold and expressive,
imbuing the painting with a sense of dynamism
and movement. Each stroke seems
to dance across the canvas, conveying the
artist’s passion and vitality.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, “The Dessert:
Harmony in Red” is also a reflection of
Matisse’s philosophical beliefs about art and
life. For Matisse, color was not merely a tool
for representation but a means of expressing
emotion and spirituality. In this sense, “The
Dessert: Harmony in Red” becomes more
than just a still life; it is a meditation on the
beauty and abundance of the world around
us.
Over a century after its creation, “The
Dessert: Harmony in Red” continues to inspire
and enchant viewers with its timeless
beauty and vitality. It serves as a testament
to Matisse’s enduring legacy as one of the
greatest artists of the 20th century and a pioneer
of modern art. As we gaze upon its
vibrant hues and dynamic brushwork, we
are reminded of the boundless potential of
artistic expression and the enduring power
of creativity to uplift and inspire.
unparalleled skill in manipulating form
inspired by the ever-present enigmas of
existence. His playful attempts at interplays
between being and non-being, dimensionality
and void, invite viewers to engage with
philosophical concepts that question our understanding
Lightbox, When Solidarity Is Not a
Metaphor will take place from 16 to 21 April
2024 at My Art Guides Venice Meeting Point,
Navy Officers’ Club, Arsenale, Venice.
Curated by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez,
Arts and Culture Programme Manager at
Cité international des arts, the exhibition
spans installations, photographs, performances,
listening sessions, and heart-toheart
conversations.
The exhibition offers a counter-space
to the reigning agendas of war, patriarchy,
and colonialism, and their toxic impacts
on human and non-human ecosystems.
The exhibiting artists—alumni, residents,
and collaborators of both Cité international
des arts in Paris and Alserkal Initiatives in
Dubai—challenge the understanding of ‘solidarity’
as merely an object of theorising and
discourse.
Featured artists include Majd Abdel Hamid,
Yana Bachynska, Rehaf Al Batniji, Paula
Valero Comín, Saad Eltinay, D Harding, Adelita
Husni-Bey, Nge Lay, Museum of Breath,
Koushna Navabi, Shada Safadi, Dima Srouji
and Jasbir Puar.
The exhibition is complemented by a diverse
programme starting at 3pm daily, with
Khaldi and Sarouna, R22 Tout-Monde, Zora
Snake, Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman.
Intentionally foregrounding artistic practices,
When Solidarity is Not a Metaphor
focuses on simple gestures, often evoking
quotidian existences on the periphery
of conflict. Inspired by the title of the book
Decolonization Is Not a Metaphor (2012), in
which authors Eve Tuck and K. Wayne Yang
analyse the material and factual violences of
colonialism, the exhibition positions solidarity
as praxis.
Throughout the six-day exhibition and corresponding
programme, solidarity is articulated
as compassionate porosity; a feminist,
care-driven fluidity of moving across mindsets.
Its most humble unit of expression is
held in the word ‘with’—working, thinking,
speaking, and simply being in a state of
with-ness.
Many of the featured artists in When Solidarity
Is Not a Metaphor share the destiny
of forced displacement and are doubly committed,
both to igniting questions that address
these displacements and to sustaining
ethical practices of production.
Vilma Jurkute, Executive Director of
Alserkal Initiatives, remarked: “When Solidarity
is Not a Metaphor is a collective attempt
grounded in the cognitive generosity
of our partner institutions and a global civic
network of multi-disciplinary practitioners.
In light of the ongoing injustices in Palestine,
Sudan, Ukraine, and other parts of the
world, it feels imperative for us at Alserkal
to embody the spirit of lived practice and
extend our platform to the Venice Biennial.
By working with artists whose practices are
embedded in the ethics of care, we hope to
encourage whole-thinking structures and
shared moments of intention to emerge.”
Benedicte Alliot, Director General of
Cité international des arts, said: As a private
foundation embedded in the values
of hospitality, conviviality and safe space
and dedicated to the well-being of artists,
it is with deep gratitude that we accepted
Alserkal Initiatives’ invitation to join them in
presenting this project at the My Art Guides
Venice Meeting Point. We deem it of the utmost
importance and in continuation with our
mission to stand in solidarity during these
difficult times—times that are challenging
for artists, practitioners and art institutions
across the world.
Mara Sartore, Director of Lightbox, said:
“The Venice Meeting Point was established
with the purpose of promoting dialogue
among artists, whilst fostering a sense of
unity and meaningful connections. In today’s
context, stimulating this dialogue, nurturing
a community spirit and solidarity are more
crucial than ever. That is why this year, we
have partnered with Alserkal Initiatives and
its current status as an icon was cemented
in 1911 when it was stolen from the
Louvre Museum in Paris. The subsequent
media frenzy catapulted the painting to international
fame.
Jackson Pollock’s Unique Technique:
American artist Jackson Pollock is renowned
for his distinctive style of drip painting,
which he developed in the late 1940s.
Rather than using traditional brushes, Pollock
One notable example is Han van Meegeren,
a Dutch artist who successfully passed off
his own paintings as works by Vermeer in
Erik Minter, a contemporary artist born in 1979 in the
District of Columbia, has carved a unique niche in the
art world with his mesmerizing compositions that blend
vibrant colors, surreal figurations, and abstract elements.
Currently based in New Jersey, Minter’s work captivates
viewers, evoking emotions akin to dreams or nostalgia
while pushing the boundaries of visual perception.
54 April 2024
Minter’s artistic journey is a testament to his unconventional
approach to painting. His compositions,
though somewhat planned, are imbued
with improvisational flair, where each piece
becomes a manifestation of his creative instincts. His
technique involves a diverse array of methods, including
spraying, pouring, gesturing marks, and employing tape
to create forms. These techniques, as Minter describes
them, are not rigid rules but rather a set of tendencies
that guide his artistic process, allowing for spontaneous
expression and fluidity within his work.
One of the defining features of Minter’s art is his use of
hyper-color neon-esque elements that seemingly dance
across the canvas. These elements, characterized by
explosions, smears, breaks, drips, and cosmic galaxies,
beckon viewers into a mesmerizing visual realm. However,
amidst the apparent chaos, Minter skillfully navigates
the viewer’s gaze, providing linear escorts that offer
glimpses of familiarity within the abstract landscape.
It’s this delicate balance between chaos and order that
invites viewers to engage with Minter’s work on multiple
levels, fostering a dialogue between the tangible and the
Gabriel Diego Delgado aptly describes Minter’s work
as exploiting the viewer’s desire to understand and recognize
ambiguous visual cues. Indeed, Minter’s compositions
serve as conduits for introspection, inviting viewers
to immerse themselves in a world where emotions
transcend rationality, and imagination knows no bounds.
Each brushstroke, each splash of color, becomes a portal
to a realm where the subconscious reigns supreme,
where memories intertwine with fantasies, and where reality
blurs with the surreal.
Minter’s artistic journey has been marked by numerous
exhibitions and accolades, showcasing his prolific output
and resonating with audiences worldwide. From solo exhibitions
like “DOPAMINE” at Mazel Galerie in Brussels
to group shows such as “Love Endures” at StolenSpace
Gallery in London, Minter’s work continues to captivate
and inspire. His presence in prestigious art fairs and galleries
across the globe underscores the universal appeal
of his art and its ability to transcend geographical boundaries.
Beyond the confines of galleries and exhibitions, Minter’s
impact extends into the realm of publications and
interviews. His insights into the creative process and his
unique perspective on art have been featured in various
magazines and platforms, further cementing his status as
a visionary artist of our time.
As we delve into the vivid world of Erik Minter, we are
reminded of the transformative power of art to evoke
emotions, stimulate imagination, and transcend conventional
boundaries. Through his vibrant color palettes, abstract
compositions, and surreal narratives, Minter invites
us to embark on a journey of self-discovery, where the
boundaries between reality and illusion blur, and where
the essence of human experience finds expression in
the language of paint and canvas. In Minter’s world, art
becomes not merely a visual spectacle but a conduit for
of the boundless possibilities of the human imagination.
In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, socio-political upheavals,
and environmental crises, the role of art in society has never been more crucial.
While art has traditionally been viewed as a means of aesthetic expression or cultural
commentary, there’s a growing imperative for it to evolve beyond mere decoration
or critique. The call for “art for a change” resonates now more than ever,
urging artists to harness their creativity as a force for positive transformation.
Art has the power to provoke thought,
challenge perceptions, and inspire
action. It serves as a mirror
reflecting society’s triumphs and
tribulations, but it should also aspire to be a
catalyst for change. This begs the question:
What kind of change are we advocating for
through art?
At its core, art for a change encompasses
a spectrum of intentions, from raising
complex global challenges.
One of the most potent forms of art for a
change is socially engaged art, which prioritizes
community participation and dialogue.
It empowers marginalized voices, amplifies
grassroots movements, and facilitates collective
problem-solving. Whether it’s a mural
celebrating cultural diversity, a performance
highlighting environmental degradation, or
a multimedia installation advocating for social
justice, these projects create spaces for
meaningful interaction and reflection.
Moreover, art for a change extends beyond
the realm of activism; it encompasses
art therapy programs, creative education
initiatives, and cultural diplomacy efforts. It
recognizes the healing power of art in promoting
mental well-being, especially in times
of crisis. It acknowledges the role of art in
nurturing imagination and critical thinking
skills among the youth, laying the groundwork
for a more compassionate and resilient
society.
In essence, art for a change is about harnessing
creativity as a force for good, leveraging
it to build bridges, foster dialogue,
and inspire hope. However, realizing the full
potential of art for a change requires a collective
commitment from artists, institutions,
and society at large.
Artists must be willing to step outside their
comfort zones, embracing experimentation
and risk-taking in their pursuit of meaningful
impact. Institutions need to prioritize
accessibility, diversity, and sustainability in
their support of artistic endeavors. Society,
in turn, must recognize the value of art beyond
its commercial or entertainment value,
championing policies that prioritize cultural
enrichment and creative expression.
As we navigate the complexities of the
21st century, let us not underestimate the
transformative power of art. Let us harness
its potential to imagine alternative futures,
challenge the status quo, and cultivate empathy
and understanding. Let us embrace
art for a change as a beacon of hope in a
world hungry for positive transformation.
In the words of renowned artist and activist,
Ai Weiwei, “Art is not a commodity. Art
does not belong to the market. Art is about
our soul, our consciousness.” It’s time we reaffirm
the true purpose of art and harness its
power to shape a better world for generations
to come.
Whether through volunteering, donating,
La Haine Inside Us
Fall/Winter 2024:
Unveiling the
Depths of
Emotion
78 April 2024 www.magzoid.com

In the realm where avant-garde meets
streetwear, the Fall/Winter 2024 collection of
La Haine Inside Us emerges as a bold testament
to the intricacies of human emotion.
Delving deep into the recesses of our genetic
heritage, the collection transcends mere
fashion, offering a profound exploration of
the latent forces that reside within us all.
At the heart of this collection lies a relentless
pursuit of originality in both shapes and
fabrics. Each garment serves as a canvas,
meticulously crafted to highlight intricate details
and innovative processing techniques.
From cotton to leather, the materials speak
volumes, while all-black shades create a
canvas for cutting-edge technology prints
and unprecedented fabric manipulations.
The fusion of avant-garde aesthetics with
street-wear sensibilities defines the grounded
identity of the La Haine Inside Us brand.
This fusion is not merely stylistic but embodies
a profound statement on the human condition—a
creative and provocative intuition
that challenges norms and sparks dialogue.
www.magzoid.com April 2024
As Cormac McCarthy aptly puts it, “It’s
within us, latent, still, as if it’s sleeping.” The
collection draws inspiration from this intrinsic
duality of human emotion—particularly
the darker, more visceral aspects. It’s an
acknowledgment of the existence of hate,
not as a condemnation but as a facet of our
shared genetic heritage.
Yet, amidst this acknowledgment lies a
call to action. The awareness of hate’s existence
serves as our only weapon against
its insidious influence. “Good people do like
this. They keep on trying, they never give
up,” McCarthy reminds us—a mantra that
echoes throughout the collection.
In the vibrant realm of streetwear, where fashion and culture intertwine, few symbols stand as boldly as
the iconic logo of BAPE (A Bathing Ape). This emblem, renowned across the globe, is not merely a mark
of a brand but a testament to the fusion of 20th-century pop culture and Japanese wit. At the heart of its
genesis lies the visionary founder, Nigo, whose profound affection for cinematic nostalgia and linguistic
charm birthed a symbol that transcends mere branding.
Nigo’s reverence for 20th-century
pop culture is palpable in every
aspect of BAPE’s identity. Drawing
inspiration from the groundbreaking
1968 film Planet of the Apes, he ingeniously
encapsulated its essence within the brand’s
name and logo. The primal allure of the film,
coupled with its societal commentary, resonated
deeply with Nigo, compelling him to
weave its imagery into the fabric of BAPE’s
visual identity.
Central to this iconic emblem is the notion
of a “bathing ape in lukewarm water,”
a playful Japanese idiom that holds layers
of meaning within its seemingly simple
construct. Originating from a culture rich in
metaphor and symbolism, this phrase paints
a vivid picture of indulgence and excess.
It speaks to a generation characterized by
its penchant for opulence, reflecting the
very ethos of the youthful demographic that
would come to embrace BAPE wholeheartedly.
The BAPE logo, with its unmistakable
silhouette of an ape, poised amidst the lettering,
embodies this duality with finesse.
Its bold lines and striking simplicity draw
the eye, while its underlying narrative adds
depth and intrigue. The ape, an emblem of
primal power and untamed energy, becomes
a vessel through which Nigo communicates
his vision of youth culture.
Furthermore, the logo’s aesthetic appeal
lies not only in its visual composition but
also in its cultural resonance. It serves as
a bridge between past and present, seamlessly
blending elements of nostalgia with
contemporary flair. Its enduring popularity
speaks volumes about its ability to transcend
fleeting trends, anchoring itself as a
timeless icon in the ever-evolving landscape
of fashion and design.
In essence, the BAPE logo stands as a
testament to the power of symbolism and
storytelling in the realm of branding. It is
more than just a mark of identification; it is a
cultural artifact, a visual allegory that speaks
volumes about the ethos of its creator and
the spirit of the times. As we continue to
navigate the currents of change, the BAPE
logo remains a steadfast beacon, reminding
us of the enduring allure of art, culture, and
creativity.
