I WANT ONE
OF THOSE
Guy Mannering is a broker with Cecil Wright and has nearly
two decades of experience as a charter Captain. With an
in-depth knowledge of the logistical requirements of large
yacht operation and ownership, Guy is well placed to offer
his opinion on his all time favourite tenders and toys
BEST LOOKING TENDER VANQUISH VQ55
It’s like Van Dutch and Wajer made a baby and what a beauty. Just
stunning to drive and you can always guarantee an exquisite build
quality from Northern Europe. They’re also fairly uncommon so a real
head turner. I drove one a few years ago, but the newer VQ55 Sportline
has a stepped hull to add lift and reduce friction. This in combination
with five Mercury V12s, the speed can reach up to 70 knots. Also
available with twin Nanni N16 1200 hp (V8) inboard diesels and
waterjets, giving top speed of 50 knots. All too often the final detailing
on larger tenders gets ignored, but I was thoroughly impressed. A
miniature superyacht through and through.
BEST TENDER DRIVEN FJORD 42 OPEN
became familiar with this perfect and indestructible tender while
I working aboard the infamous Gene Machine. The Volvo Penta IPS
pod-drive propulsion system with joystick control makes close quarter
manoeuvring literally child’s play. The standard IPS500 delivers top
speeds of 34 knots or you can upgrade to the IPS600 to deliver
40knots. There’s plenty of cabin space, easily fast enough, hydraulic
swim platform, huge fuel tanks, creating a great surfing wave. This
vessel is a thoroughbred powerboat, yet it offers the perfect place to
relax and enjoy life on the open water. I could go on but I’d use up my
word count.
MONEY NO OBJECT
RIVA AQUARAMA
Recently celebrating their 60th anniversary, many
have tried and failed to produce such a timeless
classic. Production of it and its derivatives (the Lungo,
Super, and Special) ran from 1962 until 1996. The
hull was based on the Riva Tritone, an earlier model
speedboat by Riva, which in turn was inspired by the
American mahogany Chris-Craft runabouts. The boat’s
speed, beauty, and craftsmanship earned it praise as
the Ferrari of the boat world. The Riva Aquarama’s
hull was sheathed in mahogany and varnished to
accentuate the beauty of its natural wood grain. All
versions were twin engined, with top speeds of 45/50
knots depending on engine choice. Power varied
from 185 hp to 400 hp per engine, delivered by Riva
‘tuned’ Cadillac and Chrysler models, among others.
An obvious choice to appear on the silver screen,
the Aquarama has made appearances driven by
Xenia Onatopp in the Bond movie GoldenEye, and
a Special is piloted by Vincent Cassel in the movie
Ocean’s Twelve. Occasionally I’ll be inspecting an
enormous yacht where the owner has space to simply
hang one of these for display purposes only, perfectly
maintained, never driven, varnished and polished to a
mirror finish.. a thing of beauty.
BEST GENERAL PURPOSE TENDER WILLIAMS DIESELJET 625
The humble Williams Jet Tender never receives enough credit in
my opinion. However, there are obviously a few other advocates
as in 2021 they launched their 10,000th tender. The colour scheme is
totally customisable, they’re ideal for beach landings in the Bahamas,
they’re an absolute pleasure to drive and perfect for watersports, with
smooth, powerful acceleration and high-speed manoeuvring. Plus, the
rubber sponsons allow you to leave the junior deckhand to refuel from
the mothership without worrying about your paintwork. The range of
vessels on offer is vast and growing so there is always a Williams that
will fit nicely within your current line up.
BEST TOY CUDAJET
The World’s First Underwater Jetpack,
need I say more? It was developed
by British underwater enthusiast Archie
O’Brien while he was in his final year at
Loughborough Design School. Among
other things, he wanted to create a
system that was lighter and faster than
existing products. The CudaJet is the final
commercial version of what he envisioned.
A hardwired handheld trigger-style remote
is used to control the speed. The jetpack
can be used down to a maximum depth
of 40 metres and delivers 40 kg of thrust,
reportedly taking the wearer to a top speed
of 3 metres per second. Sadly, I have yet to
personally test this device, but extremely
excited to receive an invitation at the next
yacht show, hint hint.
A SAFER
CREW &
YACHT
Peter Watson from DG Maritime
discusses the importance of continued
professional development and bringing
new training modules to the industry
and specifically the latest Lithium-ion
battery firefighting course
In 2022 a client asked me a question about a specific make of
fire extinguisher for use on Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) battery fires. The
first action was to carry out some research on the extinguishers
and the one major concern I had, involved a crew member having
to be within one and a half to two metres of the fire to apply the
contents of the extinguisher. After discussions with my fellow
training associates, we realised there may have to be a change
in the firefighting procedures we teach when dealing with Li-ion
battery fires.
The other area of concern was for mariners who carry out their
initial International Convention on Standards of Training Certification
and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) for basic and advanced
firefighting. They have to do updating training every five years
at a shore based maritime firefighting school and for some, this
means waiting a long period of time before they had any continuing
professional development (CPD) training on the issues of Li-ion
battery fires.
Believing there was a training need and to ensure that mariners
have CPD, we decided to develop an online training module that
the whole crew could attend. This included those that were off
on rotation as they could remotely log in to the training. By doing
this, we could update crews about the issue more quickly than
waiting for their STCW updating training.
During the development of the course, the Maritime Coastguard
Agency (MCA) released the draft of “MGN 681(M) - Fire safety and
storage of small electric powered craft on yachts” for consultation.
We took the opportunity to be involved in the consultation which
allowed us to feedback such things as the proximity to the fire
a crew member would need to be in order to try and extinguish
the fire with a handheld fire extinguisher.
We felt it was important to wait until MGN 681(M) was published
before launching the training programme, thus ensuring there
were no discrepancies between the MGN and what we planned
to teach.
We eventually launched the training at the end of August 2023 with
twelve of our clients taking up the training between September
and December of the same year.
The rationale behind our training is to ensure the safe handling,
storage and operation of Li-ion batteries including safe firefighting
procedures to deal with the problem.
Li-ion batteries can pose fire and explosion risks if mishandled
or damaged. Appropriate training helps individuals understand
the risks and teaches how to mitigate them thereby enhancing
overall safety. By educating crew members on best practices
for li-ion battery handling, our training reduces the likelihood of
accidents and incidents that could result in a serious incident,
injury or even fatalities.
This online training can be accessed from anywhere with an internet
connection, allowing the whole crew to attend the training, whether
they’re on the yacht, on shore leave or at home. It also eliminates
the need for travel expenses associated with attending a fire
school or bringing trainers onboard.
10 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

Online training ensures that all crew members receive the same
standardised information and instruction, promoting consistency
in safety protocols and procedures across the entire crew.
For the learning outcomes of the training course, we thought it was
important that students understand the following areas:
• The salient points of MGN 681(M) in relation to firefighting
procedures, in particular the extreme dangers of the products
of combustion from a Li-ion battery fire and the dangers that
can be encountered post incident when carrying out clean up
of the fire compartment.
• The basic principles and components of how a Li-ion battery
works, including the different types of batteries that can be found
on the market.
• Care and maintenance of Li-ion batteries ensuring that manufacturer’s
instructions are always followed.
• The causes of ‘thermal runaway’ and how propagation throughout
a Li-ion battery develops.
• The constituents of the products of combustion and the dangers
to life they present to crew should they inhale these products
of combustion.
• The advantages and disadvantages of the handheld firefighting
equipment for dealing with Li-ion battery fires and other types
of fire suppressors.
• How fixed firefighting systems perform during a Li-ion battery fire.
• Recommended firefighting techniques for both internally and
externally on the vessel.
• Fire investigation and post incident considerations.
“The rationale behind our training is to
ensure the safe handling, storage and
operation of Li-ion batteries including
safe firefighting procedures.”
Due to the rapid growth in Li-ion battery usage there is an increasing
likelihood of encountering a Li-ion battery fire. This Li-ion battery
fire training raises the awareness of the risks associated with
Li-ion batteries.
Fighting Li-ion battery fires requires specialised knowledge and
techniques due to the unique characteristics of these batteries.
Training ensures responders are equipped with the necessary
skills to mitigate such incidents safely.
Overall, Li-ion battery fire training is essential for ensuring the
safety of individuals, property, and the environment in the face
of the growing prevalence of Li-ion battery technology.
The Li-ion Battery training is just one course in the portfolio of
courses we provide at Da Gama Maritime. We have a team of five
training associates, all of whom have expertise in maritime firefighting
training with knowledge gained from careers as professional
firefighters and almost 150 years of service between them.
YOUR GREEN
CHARGING SOLUTION
Aqua superPower continues to revolutionise the
yachting industry with the deployment of onboard
charging systems for electric tenders and toys
ADVERTORIAL
Superyacht and yacht owners are
increasingly turning to electric tender
boats as a cleaner and more sustainable
alternative to liquid fuel-powered vessels. This
shift is not only driven by a desire to protect
the environment but also by advancements in
electric propulsion technology that make electric
tenders a viable and efficient option.
Global marine fast charge network operator Aqua
superPower is the first company to design and
install charging facilities onboard a superyacht,
enabling both high powered and lower powered
DC charging of electric tenders. Through a
bespoke system architecture, Aqua superPower’s
onboard charging solution is characterised by
its flexibility, allowing yacht and superyacht
owners to opt for DC high-powered charging
both onboard the ship in the tender storage
area or externally alongside.
The new system provides two 30 kW charge
points within the garage and two 120 kW charge
points when the electric tenders are alongside the
mothership. This is complemented by landside
support from the Aqua network, offering a fully
connected back-office function and 24/7 customer
support.
One key feature of Aqua superPower’s system is
the adoption of the CCS protocol for connectors,
facilitating two-way communication between the
electric tender and the yacht. This connectivity
provides an additional layer of safety by allowing
real-time monitoring of crucial parameters such
as battery temperature, state of charge, and
other data through the boat’s dashboard. This
proactive approach ensures optimal performance
and safety during the charging process.
The system Aqua superPower delivered includes
a number of high-power waterside locations for
charging the electric tenders during high demand
periods and extended use. The system utilises a
novel power management system that allocates
the capacity to the location that demands it. It
can simultaneously charge the electric tenders
on different allocated waterside areas of the
mothership.
The tender garage, a perfect location for charging
while the yacht is underway or overnight, offers
convenience and efficiency. This approach aligns
with the diverse needs of yacht owners, catering
to activities such as watersports, VIP pickups,
grocery runs, and general yacht servicing.
Continuous advancements in electric propulsion
technology have played a pivotal role in making
electric tenders more powerful, reliable, and
efficient. Modern electric motors, coupled with
high-capacity batteries, now offer performance
levels that rival traditional fuel-powered vessels.
Concerns about range and power have been
effectively addressed, bolstering the appeal of
electric propulsion in the marine industry.
Perhaps the most compelling reason for the shift
towards electric tenders is a shared commitment
among yacht owners and industry players to act
as responsible stewards of the environment.
With concerns about climate change and marine
pollution escalating, adopting electric tenders
is a proactive measure to reduce the industry’s
carbon footprint and minimise ecological impact.
The integration of onboard electric tender
charging systems marks a significant milestone in
this evolution and Aqua superPower’s pioneering
solutions not only address the practicalities of
charging but also ensure a positive impact on
the high-end segment of yachting.
As electric tenders continue to evolve and gain
prominence, Aqua superPower’s intelligent marine
fast charging solutions will undoubtedly play a
pivotal role in shaping the future of maritime
transportation, steering the industry towards
a more sustainable and eco-friendlier horizon.
GETTING
TOUGH
WITH STYLE
ONBOARD takes a look at some of the latest RIBs
to hit the growing market of tender manufacturers
looking to lure the new generation of adventure
seeking superyacht owners, with some innovative
hull designs and plenty of style
Recalling the era when RIBs were merely standardised orange
rescue crafts mandated by SOLAS requires either a sharp
memory or a seasoned perspective. Yet, through the ingenuity
of designers and forward-looking manufacturers, these vessels
have transcended their utilitarian origins to become the epitome of
versatility in the realm of yacht tenders.
Regardless of the scale of the mother vessel or the particular requirements
of the owner, the modern RIB market offers a dizzying array of options,
ranging from compact, agile crew tenders propelled by jets to fast and
rugged adventure tenders aimed at the new generation of owners
to expansive chase boats exuding a luxury reminiscent of the niche
limousine tenders.
These vessels come in an astonishing variety of shapes, sizes, and price
points, catering to every imaginable need and budget, from the modest to
the extravagant. Characterised by their rigid hulls adorned with inflatable
collars, RIBs boast unparalleled buoyancy and stability, making them
indispensable for docking manoeuvres and adept at navigating rough
seas - a feature that resonates strongly with a new generation of yacht
owners seeking thrills and adventure in the more un-chartered waters.
Powered by petrol, diesel, or the increasingly popular electric engines
or inboard and outboard options, RIBs offer reliability and adaptability,
ensuring seamless integration with the power systems of their parent
yachts. However, it is the diversity of their designs that truly sets them apart.
Some RIBs feature ingenious drop-down bow ramps, facilitating effortless
beach landings and enabling the transportation of vehicles or recreational
gear ashore, or even amphibious options, thereby opening up a world
of exploration and excitement for adventurous guests.
Beyond their practical use, RIBs are also coveted for their versatility and
numerous design options.
Whether you are leisurely
cruising through tranquil
anchorages or hurtling
across open waters with
adrenaline-pumping
speed, RIBs offer a
captivating blend of
comfort and performance,
appealing to thrill
seekers and water sports
enthusiasts alike.
While traditional propellerdriven
models remain
popular, there is a growing demand for water jet-powered RIBs, prized for
their enhanced safety and manoeuvrability, particularly among aficionados
of high-speed aquatic pursuits. Moreover, as environmental consciousness
drives the shift towards cleaner, quieter propulsion options, RIBs are
embracing the latest advancements in electric technology, promising a
more sustainable future for luxury yachting.
In the ever-evolving landscape of yacht tender design, brands are capturing
the imagination of the elite superyacht market with their innovative
approach to satisfy the owners and yacht crew alike.
Catering to the desires of modern adventurers, these vessels are
ordered alongside the construction of the main yacht, ensuring seamless
integration into onboard storage and launching systems, while offering
bespoke craftsmanship tailored to the individual tastes and preferences
of their discerning owners.
In essence, RIBs represent not just a means of transportation, but a
gateway to boundless adventure and exploration, embodying the spirit
of discovery that defines the modern yachting experience.
RIBCAT
Lightweight, extremely stable, emission-free:
these are the key features of the new Ribcat
tenders. With the catamaran RIB, Yachtwerft
Hamburg offers an innovative tender for owners
of large motor and sailing yachts. Tenders are
often a problem when equipping large yachts. On
sailing yachts, the size and weight of tenders are
often detrimental to performance; motor yacht
owners prefer stable tenders that lie well in the
water and are also compact enough to fit in the
yacht’s garage. Johannes Malzahn, Managing
Director of Yachtwerft Hamburg and its new
Ribcat brand, says: “Finding the right tender for
a large motor or sailing yacht is a challenge for
many owners or their captains. That’s why we
decided to make life a little easier for them and
develop our Ribcat tenders.” Ribcat tenders
are made of carbon composite, are tailored to
the needs of owners of large yachts and weigh
just 170 kilograms at a length of 3.65 metres
and 230 kilograms at a length of 4.30 metres.
They are available with both electric drives and
conventional outboards at the stern.
An exceptional user experience, state of
the art product design, engineering, and
technology for marine products of the future
RAD Propulsion introduces its first electric drive system,
the RAD 40, a radically different outboard for ribs and
powerboats designed from the ground up by a team of
expert engineers. The stylish and lightweight drive with intuitive
operating features stands out from the crowd.
The RAD 40 has a super compact and lightweight form factor.
This maximises space onboard and ensures seamless integration
for boat builders. The low profile and attractive styling means
there are no protrusions into the vessel over the transom, even
when fully tilted upwards.
It comes complete with a drive-by-wire control system for easy
installation. With the option of adding RAD batteries in different
sizes to suit usage requirements, customers have the full turnkey
solution from purchase.
RAD 40 KEY PRODUCT BENEFITS
• Compact - smaller than its conventional equivalent and
designed so that the motor doesn’t intrude onto the vessel’s
deck space. The outboard remains behind the transom when
tilted up.
• Accurate - exceptional control and manoeuvrability with full
drive-by-wire controls and 180 degrees of steering available.
Forget worrying about a tight berth on a windy day.
• Quiet - less noisy than internal combustion engines enabling
you to immerse yourself in the environment around you.
• Reliable - works every time and requires minimal maintenance,
making dodgy fuel gauges and clogged filters a thing of the
past.
• Efficient - reduced running costs when compared to fossil fuel
powered systems and ready for use wherever and whenever
you need it.
• Ease of installation - its lightweight and neat form makes
installation a breeze. No requirement for external steering gear
and connections.
TESTING AND MORE TESTING
At RAD, our product engineering goes above and beyond the
standard when it comes to testing. We are constantly putting
the RAD 40 through its paces checking out performance at
extreme temperatures and undertaking 50 times gravity drop
tests. This coupled with due diligence around the most up-to-date
and rigorous safety standards makes the RAD 40 the superior
choice for both commercial and leisure users.
In terms of safety the RAD proprietary throttle lever has a mechanical
lock that prevents the drive being accidentally engaged when
stationary which is a common concern among boat users where
the silence of an electric motor doesn’t act as a natural warning.
The highly responsive fully digital RAD throttle provides precise
control in every situation. It features a neutral safety mechanism,
illuminated tilt and trim buttons and is included as standard.
The RAD 40 has our drive-by-wire steering wheel with force
feedback with variable resistance - this helps mimic the feel of
a traditional mechanical steering system.
RAD’s customers include RS Electric Boats, Valkama in Finland,
Hyrex in Norway and Stephens Waring Boat Design in the US.
DESIGNER TIMES
ONBOARD talks to the design office of Yachtwerft Meyer to discover the design
process that enables them to achieve impressive, timeless and elegant tenders
and equipment – year after year and what the future holds for the company
In the world of superyachts and their tenders,
where luxury and innovation go hand in hand,
Yachtwerft Meyer has established itself as
one of the leading names. For almost 30 years,
this renowned company has been known for its
exquisite tender boats, perfectly tailored to the
needs of superyachts and their clients. But what
makes Yachtwerft Meyer so special?
One key lies in their young and innovative design
team, constantly setting new standards and
redefining the boundaries of modern tender
construction. Today, we are speaking with the
Head Designer of the company, Martin Jünemann.
The design office of Yachtwerft Meyer is one of
the cornerstones of the company, a place where
creativity, passion, and technical know-how come
together. The design team is characterised by
its unwavering dedication to innovation. Led by
designer Martin Jünemann and his team, Lennart
Jerrentrup & Elias Sternberg, the design office
has contributed to the company’s high reputation
for innovative solutions and outstanding designs
of the highest quality.
Another key core to the success of the design
office lies in its close collaboration with talented
engineers and boat builders in-house. Through
continuous dialogue and exchange of ideas,
unique and innovative solutions are developed
that exceed expectations and set new standards.
A central focus of the design office is the
development of tender boats for superyachts.
They must not only meet the highest standards in
terms of design and luxury but also be practical
and functional. The team at Yachtwerft Meyer has
made it their mission to meet this challenge with
excellence and to meet every customer’s needs.
The portfolio is impressively diverse, with a wide
range of designs ranging from open tenders to
luxurious limousines and catamarans, all tailored
to the mother ship, reflecting the personality
and style of its owner.
What are the specific challenges and differences
in the design process for both the semi-custom
and full-custom sectors?
In the realm of design, particularly in the Full-
Custom segment, we engage extensively with
customers’ preferences during the planning phase,
striving for the best outcome and innovative
solutions through collaboration. We tailor the
design specifically to the mothership, taking
into account factors such as passenger count,
The portfolio is impressively
diverse, with a wide range
of designs ranging from
open tenders to luxurious
limousines and catamarans,
all tailored to the mother ship
layout, and interior requirements. Additionally,
we pay attention to climate, lighting, stabilizers,
propulsion, fuel consumption, weight distribution,
garage space, and ingress/egress.
Consequently, construction times for Full-Custom
projects are typically longer, whereas our Semi-
Custom lines offer shorter turnaround times by
utilising a base design adaptable to various
equipment configurations. We offer both open
(chase boats) and enclosed boats, allowing for
different layouts and lengths despite sharing
the same foundation. In the Semi-Custom realm,
we now cover a range from 6.5 to 12 metres.
Our in-house design team oversees the entire
construction process, from initial drawings to
fabrication, maintaining continuous communication
with clients.
Across our semi-custom and full custom offerings,
our products set a high standard for quality and
provide an exclusive waterborne experience akin
to a private jet for maritime adventures.
A look at their latest creation, the Impetus series,
reveals a wealth of innovative design elements
that delight the eye and enhance functionality.
From distinctive lines to custom materials – every
detail is carefully considered and tailored to the
specific requirements of the customer.
Where did you get the inspirations for the
outstanding design? What distinguishes the
series?
The garages on superyachts are increasingly
providing space for larger boats. For us, it was
therefore the logical step to develop a line ranging
from 10.5 to 12 metres. The name “Impetus”
aptly describes the intention of this product
line - it stands for drive, forward movement,
and dynamism. This line distinguishes itself
from the classic-elegant segment and presents
itself as sportier, more impulsive, and modern.
Nevertheless, one of our main goals was to
ensure the timelessness of the design. In this
new concept, we have attempted to implement
some expansions and innovations, including
lighting concepts, stabilizers, an electric bathing
platform, a digital interface, and other features.
As tender builders, our main focus is always on
ensuring that the product harmonises well with
the mothership, the superyacht. However, the
IMPETUS - a new line of semicustom
Yachtwerft Meyer, with its
young and innovative team,
has proven that continuous
advancement is the key to
success
Impetus series also opens up new opportunities
in the chase market - boats that either accompany
the superyacht or can be used independently
for day trips, fully autonomous and equipped
with all comforts.“
However, innovation for the design office of
Yachtwerft Meyer doesn’t just mean exploring
new paths in design, but also placing a stronger
emphasis on sustainability and environmental
awareness. With a strong commitment to
advancing the use of eco-friendly materials
and sustainable production processes, the team
contributes to the endeavor of shaping the future
of the yacht industry sustainably.
What does the future hold for tender design,
specifically for Yachtwerft Meyer?
In recent years, the demand in the tender market
has significantly increased, both in terms of
requirements and the variety of usage options.
Catamarans have taken an important place in the
market, as well as open boats and limousines
focusing on utility demands. There is a growing
emphasis on details and comfort, with stabilizers
now becoming standard.
Electric and foiling concepts have already been
developed by us to meet the needs of a new
customer base. Whereas in the past, tenders
were often seen as small, inconspicuous dinghies,
today it is expected that they meet the standards
of highly technologically advanced superyachts.
A significant milestone in our development and
transformation was joining the Zodiac Milpro
Group last year. The decades-long experience
of the company and its specific expertise in the
construction and development of utility boats
create a connection between both worlds. This
opens up new opportunities for Yachtwerft Meyer
and marks the beginning of the development of
new products and concepts in close collaboration
with Zodiac Milpro and Hurricane.
The upcoming change through artificial
intelligence seems unavoidable. What influence
do you think artificial intelligence will have on
the design and construction process?
Artificial intelligence is significantly changing the
design process and the role of the designer. For
me, however, it should primarily be seen as a
helpful tool that quickly provides new solutions
and approaches that can be integrated into the
real design with just a few quick taps and make
work easier. Nevertheless, I am firmly convinced
that we develop boats for people who have
very individual wishes and requirements, which
ultimately always must be discussed from person
to person. Designers should be aware of this fact
and learn to use AI to their advantage.
Three words that characterise your teamwork:
“Quality, Open minded, Aspiration.”
In an industry characterised by progress and
development at the highest level, Yachtwerft
Meyer, with its young and innovative team, has
proven that continuous advancement is the key to
success. By combining modern design, advanced
technology, and a commitment to sustainability,
the company has solidified its position as a leading
provider of tender boats for superyachts. And
with each new project, the company sets sail
for an even more exciting future.
SHOCK TACTICS
Mike Wills takes a look at the importance of shock mitigation
and the necessary safety protocols needed in today’s tenders
and powerboats for the comfort of crew and guests
In the recreational market, creature comfort has become important.
In the past decade, outboard engine technology has advanced
inexorably and so have hull designs. Boats are faster, consume less
fuel and are more sea worthy than ever before. They are more safer
and more versatile which has lead to the next generation of mid range,
fast planing craft penetrating not only the traditional owner skipper
market but now engaging with the charter, tender and adventure based
tourist market in a way that was never self evident before. Despite the
euphoria that has made the mid markets (20 -50’) herald some of the
fastest growing brands in the world, there are many enemies to an
exciting and pleasant experience on the water.
Motion sickness is an issue on boats where roll, and the five other
equally disagreeable motions, including heave, surge, sway, yaw and
pitch, are likely contributors to why not more people enjoy boating. A
simple gyro easily installed, can now stabilise a craft at anchor. This
sort of technology has fully embraced the mid ranges including RIBS
and open weekenders which subsequently have benefited the most.
And then there is impact from a rough and troublesome sea
where seating technology has advanced in leaps and bounds
too. With a golden passport from their roots in military and
automotive industries, they now have a solid footing in recreative
boating too. Impact at speed when negotiating a rough chop in
a Mistral in the Med or a confused water in the Solent - hurts!
It hurts the spine, jerks the neck, dislodges vertebrae and can
even break bones. I’ll elaborate on this later on in this article.
Military use demands long term extended high performance
in any sea condition and so does the highest echelons of car
racing over rough terrain. In fact four shock absorbers are
fitted on every land based vehicle in the world and has done
so for decades for a reason – comfort and avoidance of injury,
so why not on a boat?
The obvious answer had to come through seat shock absorption
technology which arrived on the recreational scene about
25 years ago but there were hurdles. The sector was much
smaller by volume and price sensitive to compared with the
aforementioned military and automotive sectors. Today, there
are many key players in the market that cater for this sector
which has rapidly expanded over the past decade.
Anecdotally, my time racing in Class III (UK and World
Championships) there was no seat technology and yet ‘the
torture’ came from the seat. In rough weather (which we used
to excel in), every wave we hit, transmitted to the back of my
neck in a weird way. Like a Zulu spear that pierced the back of
my skull. It was a unique and unpleasant feeling. At the time it
was about the winning not the discomfort. To avoid any injury
to my back, the technique was to ride the boat like a horse
jockey holding onto grab handles so the potential sudden
10G impacts (yes that’s a force equivalent to ten times your
own weight), had less effect. Newton’s laws of motion about
action and reaction are as relevant now as they were in the
17th century…there’s no escape but there is now a solution!
If ever there was a competitive sector of the business then
companies involved in making shock absorbing seating systems
and the seats that ‘sit’ on them, take the lead! It is surprisingly
technical and borne out of scientific research. This is why anyone
that makes investments in this respect needs to refer to their
websites and do some homework.
They are informative and a few have published bona fide scientific
data which eludes to the infamous 10G impact if only for a few
milliseconds and how that is successfully mitigated with their
individual mechanical solutions. When a boat goes airborne
and that’s when the propeller is well clear of the water let alone
the boat, a 10G impact is surprisingly common in a 30+ knot light
boat in a 3-4 ft/1m sharp chop.
However I was drawn to Ullman’s website
with a whole section of their site devoted
to research and a notice of the EU directive
that is ‘supposed ‘ to preside over this.
Passed in 2002 and I am paraphrasing,
the directive makes owners responsible
for passengers’ exposure to dangerous
impacts on high speed vessels and the
onus on being on them to provide the
best available technical solutions such
as seats. Ullman concluded that no
high-speed boat operations can be
225mm (9”) travel of FLEX provides the ultimate ride, eliminating both
vertical and lateral vibrations. Now with FLEXpod, Shark adds half-height
(8.5”) suspensions with unbeatable 6” travel and weighing only 3kg. They
replace standard 8-inch seat-posts to transform the ride of any seat at
unbeatable pricing. Combining this with a range of super-lightweight Shark
seats, you not only save your back but space and money at the same time.
Shark seats are routinely put through a regime of tests including life-tests,
drop-tests, crash-tests, fatigue tests and in-boat testing. Thousands of the
20 NATO-approved modules have been in use all over the world in rescue
and border patrol for 5 years now.
Sitting in a traditional seat puts your
spine into a C-shape. This is the worst
position for the spine to be in when
exposed to a vertical impact. Head
jolts can cause whiplash-like distortion
injuries and disk ruptures in the neck.
guaranteed or even claimed to be compliant with the EU directive. There
is a caveat, Ullman’s claims are that the jockey seating configurations are
currently the closest thing to EU compliance on the market.
With the EU struggling to legislate and ending up in a red tape fog,
Ullman is exempt from the EU regulation in its purest form and indeed I
assume, so must all other players in the market.
Ullman’s other concern was ‘bottoming out’ and Carl Ullman clarified
for me, “Bottoming out means that the suspension reaches the end of
its mechanical stroke. Some suspensions are prone to bottoming out,
which can significantly amplify the peak acceleration, and they would
be better off in seats without suspension.”
Let me explain ‘peak acceleration’ and back to Sir Isaac Newton, it’s
not just the mass of a human body it is the product of the force that our
bodies are accelerated at, that makes us heavier. Too much force and
it hurts and even dangerous on impact with a wave!
There is one other thing on Ullman’s website that I took attention to
which was about posture. Carl’s father, a Doctor Johan Ullman being a
professional inventor as well as specialist in anaesthesiology and intensive
care in occupational medicine. His affiliation is with the University of
Stockholm and given that sphere of influence embarked on extensive
SHOCKWAVE
Many types of leisure boats will be able to accommodate
their recreational Sentinel suspension bases. The most
common install method is mounting to a riser box, or to a
short pedestal. The suspension base is 220mm tall. Provided
you have 220mm clearance below your seat, you should
be able to fit the Sentinel suspension base to your boat. For
the recreational market the mid-back is by far most popular,
with the S5 Sentinel suspension the most popular choice
for the majority of recreational boats. Performance, size and
cost are optimised for this market. That said, some of their
professional seats that were initially designed for the military
have been well received by a segment of the recreational
market that value performance, luxury and function, over cost.
www.shockwaveseats.com
research into how our bodies react to high impact at sea in whatever
guise. He stated, “Sitting in a traditional seat always puts your spine
into a C-shape. This is the worst position for the spine to be in when
exposed to a vertical impact. There is risk for head jolts. Head jolts can
cause whiplash-like distortion injuries and disk ruptures in the neck.”
With the above in mind, seats have been remoulded, redesigned and
logistical design has been improved, though bear in mind, this was the
journey with military, emergency and municipal services that came before
our recreational market.
Other major contenders in the market, their take on how they have
successfully engaged with the market is interesting, worthy of consideration
and warrants a visit to their websites for the fuller picture.
My conversations around the world started with Shockwave seating
and mitigation systems. 24 years in existence, Shockwave is Canadian
based and one whose roots still remain in special military forces around
the world, supplying Sentinel bases and a range of seating to boot.
That said their unique claim is all that is required is a 220 mm clearance
gap to fit the base beneath a seat. The absorption process is principally
based on air/sprung cushioning and the system can be installed within a
day. The Sentinel is equipped with a 100mm travel FOX Float H2O shock
ULLMAN DYNAMICS
Ullman seats have been developed for the toughest use in the harshest conditions on the planet -
from Arctic ice to tropic dust - day and night. Used by police, military, special forces, coast guard and
sea rescue organisations across the globe. Due to increasing awareness of injury risks, among yacht
crews and captains, as well as increasing performance of yacht tenders and adventure boats, Ullman
Dynamics are seeing a growing demand for their suspension seats in the super-high-end civilian
market. The Ullman seats have been scientifically proven to be, by far, the safest of all seats. A unique
track record of 22,000 seats in professional use over 20 years with ZERO injuries reported, gives
solid support for Dr. Ullman’s claim that “If it feels good, it most probably is”.
and adjustable.
They export all over the world and often found on fibreglass and aluminium
boats between 20 – 45’. Their mid back seat is by far the most popular
but their military seating has carried favour with more luxurious and less
budget conscious owners. Pricing starts at 1497euros for the base and
a further 60 euros for a high pressure pump that can take the pressure
up to 350psi! The pump is not needed everyday but can be used to fine
tune those guests or passengers of varying weights.
ER PRO, from Greece takes a slightly different stance in their engagement
with the market through cross fertilising technology with Öhlins a Swedish
centre of excellence, in shock absorption for Formula 1, moto GP, moto
cross, mountain bikes and even snow mobiles. The worldwide service
They aren’t simply seats, but extremely
comfortable seating solutions that are
pleasant to sit in for many hours. They are
available in a variety of models
and colours, so there is always
one that perfectly matches the
design of any boat. . Their design
philosophy plays a central role here: subtle
raw material they use is recyclable
aluminium, because the team are
eager to protect the environment for
future generations.
The product range of absorption system and seat range which is the
Chameleon, Jockey and Spartan, are sold mainly in Europe and increasingly
in America. Mitigating G force for ER PRO is between 4-6G, though this
can be adjusted upwards, if necessary. Price ranges start from 2500 to
8000 euros depending on specification and bespoke design including
painting/upholstery and seat design and interestingly ER’s proprietor sees
this as adding value to a boat that is fitted with this technology. I agree.
From New Zealand, Shark Seats have a full range of seats and systems,
claiming the lightest possible suspension seats, renewable bioplastics,
making the top four in the UK’s Ministry of Defence for no adjustment
to 50 countries worldwide. In much the same market as the others,
recent successes include the tender and tourist markets.
FLEX is the core of the Shark suspension system and provides 225mm
of smooth travel. It is corrosion free, light and tough. Choice of seating
reflects the company’s ambition for reflecting the lifestyle of the owner
though fitting your own seat is also possible. It is the Luxe for office to
ERPRO
The ERpro HSC seats offer a reliable, durable and high-quality solution to
shock mitigation. Τhe main structure is made by naval aluminum and the
heart of the suspension system is enhanced with specially designed Ohlins
coil spring shock absorbers. Those features as well as the ability to offer
customised solutions in a variety of colours and trustworthy after sales
support, make ERpro’ s seats a great choice for pleasure, professional or
military high-speed boats. The SP-IV-L signifies a new era for ERpro. This
fourth version of the popular “Spartan” model is a limited edition bucket
seat that pays tribute to the long and fruitful cooperation with Ohlins as an
acknowledgement of their support. The seat encloses all the experience
and feedback gathered since ERpro presence in the market. It features a
lightweight aluminum construction, a redesigned suspension frame, along with
shock absorbers having dampening profiles specifically developed for ERpro.
Their solution to shock mitigation
at sea, utilises progressive coil
springs over air springs with racing
style settings and, above all, to
provide bespoke solutions for the
recreation market.
The company addresses the 10G slam and claims this can be reduced
to 4G in a larger boat and 4G to 2G for a smaller boat with their systems.
Pricing starts from circa 800 euros for a basic set up to 4000+ euros
for a sophisticated high end result.
Exporting to 55 countries, Ullman kits can be seen on high profile brands
such as Goldfish, Windy, Scorpion and Ribcraft. There are several more
and that makes them conversant with the tender, high performance RIB
and professional markets.
Their range of seats is the Jockey, Bucket, Bolster and Daytona seats.
The Jockey and Bolsters are popular with drivers and operative functions
certainly within the confines of a helm.
Jockey and Daytona seats are used for passengers with the latter
often sending guests to sleep even in a high speed journey!! 10G can
be experienced by a professional operative with no side affects. Price
ranges start from 3,000 to 14,000 euros, depending on the spec of the kit.
Scandinavian Seat Suspension Systems is a business to business
company and so does not sell to an end user. The systems and there’s
a whole range of them, shown on their website appears to cater for
the mid range markets. The company also reflects Ullman’s foray into
the reasons why this equipment, mitigating shock, whilst at sea is valid.
And finally, what are their future plans? This proves interesting as all are
looking towards even more comfort and security than is currently available.
SHOCKWAVE will be announcing new innovation in their take on their
current product range later on this year.
ER PRO will be introducing two new models that will be released in
2024. The first one in April and another one in September.
SHARK SEATING aims to expand on the EVO seating range with additional
accessories and to continually reduce weight on their ranges. This is
something that is work in progress and announcements will be made
in the future. Their mantra is to reduce weight in all product ranges and
maximise recycling once the product has reached an end of life stage.
ULLMAN will be launching a complete series aimed at the larger crew
transfer vessels, luxury tenders and ferries. These seats feature a unique
patented suspension system called FJORD (Flexible Joint Omni-resilient
Dampening). This allows the seat to counteract the movement of the
boat, a bit like a gyro that offers superior comfort and protection from
wave impact at a competitive cost.
This sector is alight at the moment as more innovation pours into this
market. There must be a reason to report on what happens next!
SUSPENSION SEATING
Marine suspension seating, once a luxury, has become
a necessity. As yacht tenders have become larger and
faster, so have the forces applied to the body
ADVERTORIAL
Intrepid Powerboats, 375 Nomad FE
Not all suspension units are built equal. The
two main forms of marine suspension are
mechanical and air suspension. Although
mechanical spring suspension is better than no
suspension, it doesn’t offer the comfortability,
adjustability, smoothness or fine-tuning of an
air shock suspension unit.
Suspension with an air-sprung shock allows you
to adjust the air pressure in the shock to match
the weight of the person in the seat. Meaning
every seat can have just the right amount of
suspension to keep each occupant comfortable
and safe while on the water. Professional seat
suspension is for boaters looking to navigate
the worst of waters, at speed, and for those
who want the best. Recreational suspension
is designed for moderate sea conditions and
lower speeds.
Premium suspension seating
Professional suspension seats are for boaters
who need the absolute highest performance
suspension. Militaries, search & rescue,
professional mariners, charter fishing guides,
tender captains, or anyone who is regularly out
on the water should consider a Shockwave
BRIDGING
THE GAP
BlueNav has focused on
bringing today’s mobility
to life by developing
alternative solutions
with hybrid propulsion
As the energy transition accelerates in
the automotive world, the commitment
to sustainability in the marine industry is
just setting sail. BlueNav’s essential purpose is
to passionately support responsible navigation,
empowering individuals to experience pure bliss
and forge an intimate connection with nature.
BlueNav’s core mission revolves around
accelerating the energy transition within the
boating industry towards 100% zero emissions.
The primary focus involves designing, developing,
and supplying add-on electric motors (Outboard,
Inhull and Stationary), manufactured in France,
with the aim of converting any boat into a hybrid
electric vessel.
BlueSpin technology, developed by BlueNav,
serves as a crucial link between the conventional
world of combustion engines and the realm
of electric power. The uniqueness of BlueSpin
also lies in the inclusion of an intelligent ecopiloting
interface, guiding users throughout their
journeys. This integrated solution, a Human-
Machine Interface (HMI), is highly adaptable to
individual preferences, ultimately enhancing the
experience of navigation.
By using BlueNav electric motorization systems,
users can enjoy the combined benefits of
traditional combustion engines and electric
propulsion, optimising their boating experience
with a simple button press. This innovation
enhances versatility and convenience, making
it a user-friendly solution for boat enthusiasts.
A REVOLUTION IN PROPULSION
The technology works with a hubless drive motor,
a ring-shaped motor that transmits its motion to the
propeller through magnetic means. This method
offers numerous advantages. First, the magnetic
transmission of motion minimises mechanical
friction, resulting in improved energy efficiency
and reduced power losses. With fewer mechanical
components subject to wear and tear, the ring
motor also requires less maintenance and has a
longer lifespan compared to propulsion system.
Thirdly, the absence of physical contact between
components reduces noise and vibration,
providing a quieter and more comfortable
boating experience. Moreover, the annular shape
allows for a compact and space-efficient design,
maximising the available space on the vessel.
This specific innovation in propulsion allows
boaters to have 360° thrusting. With the
responsiveness of the docking system developed
by BlueNav, the boat owner can have smoother
and more precise manoeuvering of the boat,
enhancing overall handling and navigation.
SMART NAVIGATION SYSTEM
Boating is about adapting to surrounding elements
- the wind, current, and drift - all of which are
energy-consuming factors. By choosing to
navigate with BlueNav, the user benefits from
an integrated solution and a wealth of connected
services.
This innovating system, featuring Autopilot
and Cruise Control, showcases its commitment
to simplifying and transforming the
boating experience for all. Replacing
the complexities of manual steering,
this intelligent system ensures that the
boat maintains course and speed
effortlessly, granting users full
control over their chosen navigation,
enabling a smoother and stressfree
boating experience.
WHALE DESIGN
BlueNav’s new design helps the
customer connect even more
with nature. Inspired by the graceful
dynamics of whales, their hydrodynamics
engineers created a harmonious blend of
biomimicry and sustainable innovation. While
nature follows an incremental and random bias
for its evolution, humans mimic designs that have
been shown to be more efficient and quieter, even
if, sometimes, they defy traditional engineering
theories. BlueNav’s engineers demonstrated
by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) that
the bumps on the flippers of cetaceans and
the striations on their belly have a result, they
reduce drag, and increase fluid flow efficiency.
A NEW NAVIGATION EXPERIENCE
This unique technology provides an unparalleled
navigation experience, combining the pleasure
of the senses and the modernity of a connected
engine. They can enjoy the full speed of their
combustion engines to go fast to their destination
and enjoy when they want the peace provided
by the electric motors to feel more connected
to nature and the people that are on board. It’s
a whole new experience that you get to live.
GRAF ONTARIO
Some things can barely be optimised. For everything else there’s
always room at the top. That’s why a trendsetting idea for a compact
and sporty wooden motorboat has been on their minds for some time
now. With a weight of just a little over 2 tonnes and a waterline of barely
more than six metres, the Ontario embodies sportiness and an almost
enchanting elegance with a width of less than 2.5 metres. The version
with an open transom radiates such an astounding superiority that one
falls in love with it immediately. Of course, it is also available with a
classic stern for the purists. The term “rear seat” actually doesn’t do
justice to what the team have conceived for the area behind the driver’s
seat. A sophisticated construction enables the seat to be used both in
and contrary to the direction of travel. With the help of a variable table,
a generously-sized double-length lying surface can be created. Graf are
no ideologists, but our children’s world is dear to their hearts. That’s why
they have always used oak and larch sourced from their own region for
the substructure of their boats. What’s new with the Ontario is that they
also offer the deck layer in domestic timbers – with a finish that is in no
way inferior to the classic mahogany version. Graf have also considered
the future where the drive is concerned. On request, an electric motor
provides the necessary propulsion, coupled with unclouded joy on the
water. In addition, the quality of their craftsmanship ensures that their
boats can be bequeathed. Graf Bootsbau is a family business, now in
its third generation, and has built and restored boatbuilding classics
with craftsmanship for over 40 years. In this, every boat receives their
signature and must meet the highest quality standards. Tradition and a
high professional ethos are their guidelines for your satisfaction.
typical of the high-end of the market, building on the yard’s combination
Novelty signed by talented designer Federico Fiorentino, the Turismo 9.5
EXPERINCE
THE DEEP
BLUE
SEAmagine’s Aurora Submersibles:
Where the family meets for adventure in
the magical world beneath the waves
SEAmagine’s newest Aurora-90 and Aurora-100 series, tailored for
5 to 7 individuals, depth-rated between 100m (328 ft.) to 1,000m
(3,280 ft.), boast state-of-the-art technology, including an extra-large
spherical cabin that provides exceptional personal space and comfort,
as well as optics that deliver an unparalleled underwater viewing experience.
Entering SEAmagine’s latest Aurora submersible consistently evokes awe
as one takes in the vast interior space of the transparent cabin, resulting
in a surreal and almost unbelievable experience. Numerous features of
the Aurora-90 and Aurora-100 series immediately catch the eye when
boarding these submersibles. From the elegant teak on the top deck and
the sturdy fold-up handrails that lead guests to an exceptionally large entry
hatch, to the spacious staircase boarding arrangement that guides guests
directly to their seats in the transparent bubble - every aspect of these
SEAmagine submersible models exudes an abundance of space, comfort,
and an enhanced experience.
Submersible designs over the years have offered multi-passenger seating,
but never with such a bold, large, singular interior space as SEAmagine offers.
Multi-passenger submersibles typically feature either two smaller spheres
linked together or adopt cylindrical or oval shapes. However, these designs
often come with more limitations compared to a single large sphere. Having
multiple spheres separates groups into different smaller viewing areas,
disrupts the shared experience passengers could have together, and reduces
the personal comfort space in each bubble. Submersibles with cylindrical
or oval cabin shapes don’t provide optimal optics in all directions, as the
human eye perceives best through acrylic at a 90-degree angle, which is
difficult to achieve in all directions within cylindrical and oval geometries.
Consequently, more distortion is observed through these shapes when
underwater. These distortions can be partially corrected by adjusting the
thickness of the window, but they will never achieve the level of perfection
that a large single sphere provides like in an Aurora.
The SEAmagine Aurora-90 or Aurora-100 series not only features an extralarge
sphere but is also built with an extra rear metal hull hemisphere to
further increase the interior space for occupants and separate the pilot
area from the passenger area. This enhances privacy and personal space
for passengers seated in the front window while ensuring the pilot remains
comfortable and unhindered in the rear section. The Aurora’s rear hull
section houses the entry hatch, which also integrates a window. SEAmagine’s
submersibles are the only subs on the market that have windows integrated
into their hatch, and the combination of the large front spherical window
and the upper-rear hatch window provides the pilot with excellent viewing
throughout the dive, eliminating the reliance on cameras for navigation.
ONBOARD | TENDERS & TOYS | 79

The true magic of SEAmagine’s latest Aurora submersibles unfolds as the
dive commences. As the clear blue water envelops everyone, the window
appears to vanish completely once submerged. Passengers extend their
arms and hands, attempting to discern the invisible boundary between the
cabin and the water. With such a spacious window in the Aurora model,
individuals can fully extend their arms in front of them without touching
anything. In fact, most passengers can stand upright in the cabin without
their heads touching the window.
Another remarkable feature is the beautifully serene and quiet interior of
the cabin, even as the pilot guides the sub’s propulsion system to deeper
waters. The Auroras boast powerful propulsion thrusters that operate without
gearboxes, ensuring there is no loud pitching noise from the motors that
could startle sea life or create an annoying hum inside the sub. To further
enhance the peaceful atmosphere within the cabin, SEAmagine’s interior
design prioritised a quiet air conditioning system and fans, contributing to
the tranquil environment. SEAmagine considers this quietness an essential
feature of its submersible designs, allowing passengers to discuss and hear
each other undisturbed. They can even enjoy music from the interior sound
system while exploring the underwater world.
SEAmagine’s Aurora submersibles not only offer exceptional experiences
to its passengers they are also designed and built to the highest industry
safety standards.
For SEAmagine, quality and safety are always top priorities. “Our dedication
extends to all aspects involved in the fabrication of our submersibles. Starting
with effective designs, we use superior materials ideal for the harsh marine
environment, and we apply detailed workmanship on the fabrication of each
submersible,” said SEAmagine’s Ian Sheard, a co-founder and director of
engineering.
All SEAmagine submersibles are purpose-built for simplicity and with
redundancies in place. Each sub features independently operated manual
systems, including the ballasts, batteries and propulsion. This means no central
“brain” controlling everything on board – an intentional design decision that
reduces risk of systemic failure. Double monitoring systems, such as the
one controlling the cabin’s oxygen levels, ensure the wellbeing of guests.
From the grade of stainless steel to the acrylic viewing windows, thrusters,
batteries and cables, all parts and equipment on board are carefully selected
and many are third-party tested. “When selecting materials, we don’t just
consider their immediate use,” explained Sheard. “We consider how each
piece helps the long-term maintenance, performance and life cycle of the
sub, as well as how they will stand up to regular inspections.”
When it comes to certifications for quality and safety, SEAmagine leads the
industry. The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) performs a design review
of each sub and approves all materials used, including batteries, which are
certified to 6,000msw (19,685 fsw). It provides approval for the submersible
testing plans and analysis, and inspects the final product, approves the
pressure tests and oversees sea trials. “We put so much effort into quality
and safety because we care about our customers like family, and because
we have pride in the experiences we make possible,” said Sheard.
The latest Aurora-90 and Aurora-100 series from SEAmagine represent
the culmination of the company’s unparalleled experience in designing
and constructing submersibles. These SEAmagine subs have a dry weight
between 9,000 kg and 12,000Kg, respectively, and can be semi-customised
with unique interior configurations, different depth ratings, or with single
or multiple hoist points depending the yacht’s requirements. Alongside
delivering exceptional underwater experiences to passengers, these models
are engineered to be practical, robust, and reliable - ready for action anytime,
anywhere.
SEAmagine has a proven history of providing outstanding international
technical support to yacht owners and captains for its submersibles.
80 | TENDERS & TOYS | ONBOARD

The company has a dedicated team of skilled engineers and technicians
available to promptly address any issues, regardless of the yacht’s location.
Moreover, SEAmagine offers a comprehensive training programme for
submersible pilots and support crews, ensuring that all clients have a
world-class submersible operation established aboard their yacht. In fact,
SEAmagine is the first to have created a professional submersible pilot training
programme, in 1999 in conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). The
programme expanded over the years into today’s extremely well-structured
and proven training process, with more than 100 pilots now licensed. The
company’s pioneering effort is now industry standard and represents the
top training programme available for submersible pilots.
The objective of SEAmagine’s training programme is not only to have trained
pilots, but also to ensure that the full crew of the ship is familiar with the
overall operation and the contingencies. The training is typically performed
on the client’s ship with the delivered submersible. “The extensive usage of
SEAmagine subs in the leisure, commercial and defense sectors equips us
with invaluable experience and firsthand know-how that can only be gained
at sea,” said SEAmagine’s Chairman Charles Kohnen. “Our goal is to pass
this knowledge on to our customers through a robust, hands-on training
program that starts in the classroom and ends in the water.”
SEAmagine is a leading manufacturer of personal and professional submarines,
with over 12,000 dives accumulated with a perfect safety record. The
company produces two- to seven-person models for depths from 100 to
2,300 metres deep.
SEAmagine’s submersibles have been used on many superyacht, scientific
and professional projects and have also been used in National Geographic,
BBC and numerous other film documentaries. The company’s long history
and innovative designs have been achieved through a total commitment
SAVAGE RIVALE
Welcome to the first car that we’ve ever heard described as an ‘exoelectric
beach EV’. Yep, this is some fantastic niche-filling from Dutch
firm Savage Rivale. You may remember that name from 2009’s four-door
roofless supercar the Bewerp Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS? Just five of
those were built in 10 years, and the design was then sold to a Japanese
firm and Savage Rivale got into making boats instead. Inspired by the Mini
Moke and the Meyers Manx both going electric, they wanted to create the
‘ultimate beach cruiser’ that would get owners ‘from A to Beach’. The result
is built on an aluminium spaceframe and uses a steel roll cage around the
occupants. A very simplistic design combined with a high-quality finish.
Since launching its first model in 2012, Tiwal continues
to innovate and in 2022 launched the Tiwal 2L, big
sister to the very compact Tiwal 2. The Tiwal 2L is the
inflatable sailing dinghy that is roomy enough for the whole
family! The inflatable wings on the T2L are reassuring and
comfortable for children and inexperienced skippers –
while more experienced sailors will adore hiking out and
getting close to the water! Equipped with a 6.6m² furling sail
and with no metal exoskeleton, the T2L is ideal to enjoy the
pleasures of sailing while at anchor. The boat is very rigid
when inflated and can comfortably carry 2 adults, or 1 adult
and 2 children. The inflated hull can be stored on deck or, at
anchor, tied off the stern of your cruising boat. If you decide
to go for a swim and spot a nice beach, you can just pull
your Tiwal ashore! When not in use, the T2L packs down
into its two sturdy storage bags, which are easy to stow
onboard. Taking only around 15 minutes to assemble (and
disassemble), with no tools needed, this is an accessible,
fun and portable sailing dinghy the whole family will love!
MOVIE HEROES
WET NELLIE - THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
Wet Nellie is the behind-the-scenes name given to a custombuilt
submarine, created for the 1977 James Bond film The
Spy Who Loved Me in the shape of a Lotus Esprit S1 sports
car. The Esprit was chosen to give James Bond a glamorous car to
drive. ‘Wet Nellie’ is named in reference to Little Nellie, an autogyro
featured in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, which was itself
named after actress and comedian Nellie Wallace.
It was built by Perry Oceanographic, Inc., of Riviera Beach, Florida,
United States, specifically for the film, using a Lotus Esprit S1 bodyshell,
for about $100,000 at the time. In filming, six Esprits were used
(registration PPW 306R), though only one submarine. Three of the
Esprits were just empty bodyshells which were used to show each
phase of the car-to-submarine transformation. When an additional road
car was needed for the chase sequences the producers borrowed
Lotus chairman Colin Chapman’s personal vehicle. Upon completion
of filming, the submarine went on a promotional tour. Afterwards, it was
shipped to Long Island, New York, and placed in storage. The storage
unit was prepaid for 10 years; at the end of the lease, no one claimed
the contents, so the contents of the storage locker were placed on
auction. The lucky buyer paid less than $100 for the unit. The buyers
did not know the contents when they bought it, and from 1989 to 2013
occasionally exhibited the submarine. The then owner, also owner of a
tool rental shop, had the exterior restored. It was put up for auction as
a Bond car in 2013. In September 2013, the submarine sold at auction
for £550,000 at RM Auctions in Battersea, south west London. Elon
Musk bought the vehicle, and as of 2013, planned to convert it into the
functional car-submarine from the film. Musk stated that he plans to
use Tesla Motors’ electric drive train in making his conversion a reality,
not sure if that ever happened.....
