GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO THE MKM STADIUM FOR TONIGHT’S
SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH AGAINST MIDDLESBROUGH.
Every team has bad days in a season and Stoke
City was a game where we fell below our usual
standards. There was a lack of tempo and
sharpness to our play – impacted by not having a
game for three weeks – and we needed to correct
that performance at Leeds.
This group always react well to setbacks and, for
88 minutes, we were more than a match for a Leeds
side that remain unbeaten at home. We showed
who we are with our performance and, but for a
penalty with two minutes left and a third goal on
the break, we would have come away with a hardearned
point.
From minute one at Cardiff City, we enjoyed
complete control of the game and showed what we
are capable of with our possession play, pressing
and the quality of our goals. It was a professional
performance and I was delighted with our spirit
under pressure and the response to Cardiff
scoring out of the blue. Our two centre-backs,
Jacob Greaves and Alfie Jones, didn’t put a foot
wrong and our goalscorers, Fábio Carvalho and
Jaden Philogene, are outstanding talents. We are
improving all the time, as a team and as individuals,
and we not only need to maintain that level of
performance but go beyond it.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to
Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick, his
staff, players and their fans to tonight’s game.
Michael is a very good manager and there is no
surprise with the strength of their team that
Middlesbrough are competing for the play-offs.
This is it now: six games left, three at home and we
need to stick together. Enjoy every moment and for
three games, at least, let’s make the MKM Stadium
a fortress as we try to achieve something we all
dreamed of at the start of the season.
We are all in this together.
THE BOSS
MICHAEL CARRICK:
Appointed by Boro in October 2022, Michael
Carrick took up the first full-time managerial
role of his career. He inherited a side that
occupied 21st place in the Championship
table and guided them into the Play-Offs
having won 18 out of 30 games in the
remainder of the 2022/23 regular season.
However, Carrick’s side were knocked out by
Coventry City in the Semi-Finals after losing
0-1 on aggregate. During this campaign, he
led Boro to the Semi-Finals of the Carabao
Cup where they faced Chelsea and went out
of the competition as they suffered a 2-6
aggregate defeat. Carrick has secured 42
victories from his 82 matches as Boro boss
thus far.
2024 Winter Transfer Window:
Boro brought in Finn Azaz permanently and also
signed Luke Thomas and Luke Ayling on loan
during the winter transfer window. Matthew
Hoppe also returned to the club after his loan stint
ended.
Morgan Rogers, Calum Kavanagh and Isaac
Fletcher all departed on permanent deals and
Hayden Coulson secured a loan move. In February,
Matt Crooks left the club permanently.
Seven players left the Under-21 side and three
players departed the Under-18 team. Zach
Hemming, Sol Brynn, Jeremy Sivi, Bryant Bilongo,
Terrell Agyemang and Jack Stott are all currently
out on loan.
LUKE
THOMAS
Last summer, Boro added Emmanuel Latte Lath,
Seny Dieng, Lukas Engel, Alex Bangura, Sam Silvera,
Tom Glover, Jamie Jones, Alex Gilbert and Rav van
den Berg to their squad. These were joined by the
loan signings of Lewis O’Brien and Sam Greenwood.
Chuba Akpom, Martín Payero, Joe Lumley, Grant
Hall, Luke Daniels, Marc Bola and Darnell Fisher all
departed permanently. Liam Roberts was sent out
on loan.
substitute nine times.
AT THE BACK:
Defensively, Middlesbrough possess Lukas Engel,
Dael Fry, Paddy McNair, Matt Clarke, Anfernee
Dijksteel, Luke Ayling, Alex Bangura, Darragh
Lenihan, Luke Thomas and Tommy Smith. They’ve
all gained league minutes thus far. Engel, Bangura
between them. A combined total of 12 assists have
been contributed by Engel, Fry, Clarke, Ayling and
IN THE MIDDLE:
Within their midfield, Boro can potentially utilise
Sam Greenwood, Isaiah Jones, Dan Barlaser, Riley
McGree, Hayden Hackney, Lewis O’Brien, Finn
Azaz, Law McCabe, Luke Woolston, AJ Bridge and
Fin Cartwright. Apart from the latter three, all of
them have featured in the league so far this season.
Greenwood, Jones, McGree, Hackney and Azaz
have racked up a combined total of 18 league goals.
In addition to this, Greenwood, Jones, Barlaser,
McGree, O’Brien and Azaz have produced 10
10
UPFRONT:
Boro’s attacking options include Sam Silvera, Josh
Coburn, Marcus Forss, Alex Gilbert, Sonny Finch,
Matthew Hoppe, Charlie Lennon and Pharrell
Willis. With the exceptions of Hoppe, Lennon
and Willis, they’ve all been deployed within
Middlesbrough’s forward line in the league thus
far. Silvera, Coburn and Forss have amassed a
combined total of 16 league goals and five assists.

THE CAPTAIN:
Operating at the heart of
Boro’s midfield, Jonny Howson
provides crucial experience. The
35-year-old, into his seventh
season as a Middlesbrough
player, has been a reliable figure
throughout that time.
Howson was appointed
Boro club captain ahead of
the 2021/22 campaign. He’s
featured 33 times in the league
so far in the 2023/24 season and
has contributed two league goals
and two assists. Howson began
his career at Leeds United and
made his senior debut aged 18 in
September 2006. Three months
later, he was handed his league
debut which came in a goalless
draw against the Tigers.
Howson spent six years with
the Whites and scored 28 goals
in 225 appearances. In January
2012, he joined Norwich City
and went on to have over five
years with them. This saw him
amass 188 appearances and 23
goals. Howson previously had
stints as club captain at both
Leeds and Norwich.
YOUNG GUN:
Signed in July 2023, Rav van den
Berg has gone on to play a big
part within the Middlesbrough
backline. This has seen the
19-year-old be utilised on 29
occasions in league games thus
far and he’s also secured one
league goal to his name.
Like his older brother Sepp, he
progressed through the ranks
of the PEC Zwolle academy. Van
den Berg was linked with moves
to Ajax and PSV at the age of 14
and started training with PEC
Zwolle’s first-team as a 15-yearold.
In May 2021, he was given his
senior debut at the age of 16 in
the Eredivisie.
Van den Berg racked up a
total of 32 appearances and
one goal for PEC Zwolle. He
possesses experience as a youth
international as he’s represented
the Netherlands in six age groups.
Van den Berg has earned himself
a combined total of 11 caps for
his country.
11
STAR MAN:
Having scored ten league goals
so far this season, Emmanuel
Latte Lath is a potent threat in
Boro’s attacking ranks. Latte
Lath joined the club last summer
and has featured 25 times in the
league for them.
As well as this, he scored two
goals in five appearances in the
Carabao Cup which helped Boro
get to the Semi-Finals of the
competition. Latte Lath started
his career within Atalanta’s
youth system and was elevated
to the first-team squad for the
2016/17 season. In August 2016,
he made his senior debut at the
age of 17 in a Coppa Italia tie
against Cremonese.
Latte Lath racked up two
more appearances in the same
competition and also scored his
first goal in a 2-3 defeat against
Juventus in January 2017. He
then had eight loan spells over
the next few years with sides
including Pistoiese, Imolese, Pro
Patria, SPAL and St. Gallen.

2012: Fryatt Winner
On Easter Monday in 2012, City emerged as the
victors in a dramatic game against Boro.
The visitors took the lead in the 13th minute when
Marvin Emnes produced a curled effort that beat
Vito Mannone in the City goal. Mannone later
produced an outstanding stop to deny Emnes from
doubling Boro’s lead.
In the 58th minute, Josh King secured his first goal
for the Tigers and got them back on level terms.
King turned provider for the winning goal as his
cross was converted by Matty Fryatt three minutes
from the end.
2021: First Home League Win
Hull City recorded their first league win of
the 2021/22 season with a 2-0 win over
Middlesbrough in October 2021. Having not won
a league game since an opening day victory at
Preston North End, Grant McCann’s side were
desperately in need of all three points.
Hull City XI: Mannone; Garcia, Chester, Cooper,
Dawson (C); Cairney, Evans; King, Koren (Olofinjana
90’), Brady (Stewart 77’); Fryatt.
Subs Not Used: Gulácsi, East, Cullen.
A Joe Lumley own goal put City ahead in the 81st
minute. This came about through a Keane Lewis-
Potter effort which hit the post and then came off
Lumley’s shoulder into the back of the net. Mallik
Wilks doubled the lead in added time and this win
lifted McCann’s team out of the relegation places in
the Sky Bet Championship.
1955: Tigers Complete
League Double
This meeting between the sides saw City leave
Ayresome Park with the points in a 2-1 victory in
February 1955.
Alf Ackerman scored in the fifth minute to give Bob
Jackson’s side a dream start. In the 74th minute,
Tom Dryburgh put his name on the scoresheet and
gave the Tigers their first win at Boro for over 30
years. It also ensured they did the double over their
opponents in the 1954/55 season.
Hull City XI: Bly, Dennison, Jensen, Downie, Franklin,
Porteous, Atkinson, Horton, Ackerman, Mannion,
Dryburgh.
1971: Seven Goal Thriller
On Saturday 11 December 1971, the sides played
out an encounter which produced a lot of drama,
tension and goals.
Six goals were scored in the first half, and saw City
and Boro drawing 3-3 at the break. John Kaye,
Stuart Pearson and Frank Banks all racked up goals
for Terry Neill’s side.
Kaye got his second goal of the game in the 52nd
minute and this turned out to be the winner. The
goals which Kaye and Banks managed to produce
that day were the only ones they contributed
during the entirety of the 1971/72 campaign.
Brad Guzan
Born in Chicago, Brad Guzan started his
goalkeeping career in college football as he
represented South Carolina Gamecocks. In 2004,
Guzan joined Chicago Fire’s reserves. A year later,
he turned professional and moved to MLS side
Chivas USA.
At Chivas, Guzan gained regular game time and
established himself as the main man between the
posts. In February 2006, he received his first cap
for the US and went on to earn 64 in total. He was
named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in November
2007 and his outstanding form soon courted the
attention of foreign clubs. In January 2008, Premier
League outfit Aston Villa attempted to sign Guzan.
This move fell through, but Villa eventually got
their man six months later for a £600,000 fee.
Initially an understudy to fellow US keeper Brad
Friedel, Guzan was handed his Villa debut in
September 2008. A couple of months later, he
played his first European game as he started in a
UEFA Cup tie. Guzan found it hard to break into
the first-team and this led to a loan switch to the
Tigers in December 2010. He made his Tigers
debut on New Year’s Day 2011 and racked up a
total of 11 league appearances before he returned
to Villa Park. Guzan was soon brought back to East
Yorkshire, on an emergency basis, because of an
injury to fellow loanee keeper Vito Mannone. He
featured five more times until his loan ended in
April 2011.
An injury to first choice keeper Shay Given, in
December 2011, saw Guzan get a consistent run
of games under his belt. At the end of the 2011/12
season, Guzan was released by the club. However,
he was quickly resigned and became Villa’s
number one keeper. His performances during
the 2012/13 campaign earned him the club’s
Player of the Year award. Guzan amassed
171 appearances for Villa and departed
in July 2016 for Middlesbrough.
HERITAGE NUMBER: #944 HULL CITY CAREER: 16 APPEARANCES
MIDDLESBROUGH CAREER: 14 APPEARANCES
In his year long spell at Boro, Guzan
made 14 appearances. In January
2017, he agreed to sign for MLS side
Atlanta United and officially departed
Middlesbrough at the end of the
2016/17 season. At the age of 39, Guzan
is still currently playing for Atlanta and
has made just over 200 appearances for
them.
PLAYER IN FOCUS
Cyrus Christie
A steady presence when called upon, Cyrus Christie is looking to
provide his experience on making a late push for the play-offs.
The 31-year-old has featured off the bench in the
last two games against Leeds United and Cardiff City,
with the Tigers recording a vital 3-1 win away at the
latter to keep up with the play-off pack. Replacing
Tyler Morton on 62 minutes in the victory at the
Cardiff City Stadium, the defender said it was an
important win for Liam Rosenior’s side.
“It was a very good win for us and an important win
off the back of recent results, so it was good to get
the win,” said Christie. “It is a tough place to go to and
we probably dominated from start to finish. It was
good to see three goals go in. It was disappointing not
to get the clean sheet we would have hoped for, but
it was the matter of three points for us and we have
to just keep going game by game now and looking
forward. We have another six big games coming up
so we have to build on that performance against
Cardiff.”
A key player in the victory in the Welsh capital was
on-loan Liverpool midfielder Fábio Carvalho. On
his 100th professional appearance, the 21-year-old
netted a brace before Jaden Philogene secured the
three points by scoring the third against his former
club.
Beginning his career in England at Fulham, Carvalho
broke out with the Cottagers while Christie was
also at the club. Seeing him progress as a youngster
through the academy system, the Republic of Ireland
international is not surprised to have seen the
Portuguese Under-21 international settle in at City.
“Fábio is a wonderful talent. I’ve known him since he
was a young lad at Fulham. I had been there for a few
years and have seen the progress he has made. The
loan at RB Leipzig didn’t go according to plan for him,
but he’s come here and fitted in well. He’s done really
well. I’m going to take credit for his last few goals,
because I told him he needed to score more and he’s
scored three since then!” joked Christie.
“He’s not only just a top footballer, but he is a great
lad. I get on really well with him and his future is
really bright. He has shown what he is capable of and
for a young lad he is a big character in the changing
room.”
Featuring 27 times for the Tigers this season, 2024
has been a struggle for the defender as injury ruled
him out for the majority of January and February,
before being an unused substitute four times in
March. Playing the full game against Curaçao
national side in our mid-season camp to Antalya,
Türkiye, Christie made his competitive return by
coming on in the final minutes at Elland Road against
Leeds.
In his last three appearances, the Coventry-born
defender has played more of a central role, operating
at centre-back. Predominantly featuring as a rightback,
the 31-year-old is happy to play in any position
to help the team.
19

“For me when I signed for the club, I was signed as
a right centre-back in a three formation as that was
what they were playing. I came through Coventry’s
academy as a centre-back and a centre-midfielder,
and then obviously made the most of my career at
right back, so it is a position I enjoy. I have not played
it for a while, but I have been training there a lot since
I came back from my injury,” explained Christie.
“Minutes have been limited since I came back and
it has been a bit of a stop-start season for me. I
probably came back from my knee injury too early
and it took a while to get over it and it took a lot
longer than I would have liked; it is feeling good now.
It has been tough being out, but playing centre-half
is something I enjoy and I think I’m very capable of
playing there and I think the manager knows that.
“It is just about getting opportunities there and to be
able to show people how good I am there and what
I can do. If I am called upon to play there, then I am
more than happy. I did it last year against Sunderland
when Alfie [Jones] was ill so it is something that has
been spoken about with the manager, the club and it
is definitely a position that I can see myself playing
for the future of my career.”
Welcoming his former club Middlesbrough to the
MKM Stadium this evening to begin a double home
week, with QPR visiting this weekend, the defender
is determined to help the club push up the Sky Bet
Championship table.
“We have a big run in now and you want to be a part
of it and be in the thick of it. As a footballer, these are
the games that you want to live for and we need to go
out there and show what we’re capable of.
“It’s going to take all of us, not just the players. It’s
going to take the staff and we’re going to need the
fans now more than ever as well. Whether it will be
through good moments or the bad moments, we will
need them to be loud and give us that extra push
and that extra motivation, because they can play
a massive part in that for us. It might sound a bit
cliché, but when the fans are loud and they’re
cheering, even when things aren’t going your
way, it just gives you that added boost
and added adrenaline to keep pushing
on to get the wins.
STATS:
Hull City Stats: 55
appearances, 3 goals
“We are a young team and we are probably quite
inexperienced in a lot of our squad. We are all in
this together and everyone is pushing in the right
direction. The fans have come out in their numbers
and if they can for these last six games be really loud
and super vocal like they have already done, then
that will definitely give that added boost to the lads.
“We’re up against a tough Middlesbrough team who
had done well last year as they got into the play-offs
and they’re trying to make a late run and a late surge
into the play-offs as well so this is a big game for us,”
explained Christie. “We can only look forward to this
game, we can’t look past it, we can’t look to any other
games and we can’t look at any other fixtures that
are going on as well. We need to make sure that we
win and take care of things and put ourselves in the
best position possible, We have had a good season
and we want to keep pushing. We don’t want our
season to end.
“To reach the play-offs would mean a lot not only
to me or the team, but I think everyone in the city.
It is life changing for everyone that you want to be
back in the top league in the Premier League where
most people dream of being. I have been fortunate
enough to do that a few times in my career so to do
it again, I think anytime you make an achievement
in football, it is amazing. Like I said, I’ve not played
many games, but you have to influence in different
ways, whether that be on the pitch or off the pitch
or in the changing room. Obviously with the season
I have had with the injuries, it has been tough, but it
will mean a lot to everyone in this club to get there.
We have to take each game as it comes and do
everything right every day.
“We just have to keep doing what
we’re doing and we have to trust
the process and believing in
ourselves. There’s no pressure
on us and if there is, we have to
thrive off that pressure and we
have to enjoy it, because that is
where champions are made and
that is what we have to keep
on doing. There are a lot
of lads in there that
have been at the club
for a long time and
for them I imagine
to get there would
be super amazing
as it would be for
everyone else.”
Run to the Final
This season marks 10 years since Hull City reached the FA Cup final for
the first time in the club’s history. In each edition, we take a look at
one of the players who featured in our 2013/14 FA Cup run…
Aaron McLean
A bit part figure in the Tigers’ run to Wembley,
McLean’s solitary appearance in the competition
came in the third-round tie at Middlesborough,
where the Hammersmith native scored the first
goal of City’s FA Cup campaign.
A deflected David Meyler shot from all of 30 yards
dropped into the path of McLean on the edge of the
six-yard box, who bravely slid in front of Dimitrios
Konstantopoulos in the Boro goal to give the Tigers
an early lead.
Following a hugely successful spell at Peterborough
United, scoring 83 goals in 187 games and securing
back-to-back promotions in 2008 and 2009 from
League Two and League One, respectively, McLean
joined City on a permanent transfer in January
2011.
Brought into bolster Nigel Pearson’s attack,
McLean’s first two goals in black and amber came
in the Tigers 5-1 away demolition of Scunthorpe
United in February 2011. A regular under both
Pearson and Nick Barmby, the striker found game
time hard to come by under Steve Bruce. McLean
featured 14 times in the first half of the Tigers
2012-13 Championship promotion campaign,
but spent the remainder of the season on loan at
Ipswich Town.
The former Peterborough cult hero made just four
appearances the following season under Bruce,
most notably making his Premier League debut
away against Tottenham Hotspur in October 2013.
Twelve days after netting his final goal in a City
shirt against Middlesborough, McLean departed
the club, joining Bradford City in January 2014.
Spells at Barnet and Ebbsfleet United followed
before calling time on his playing career in 2018.
Hull & Proud
Over 100 players to have played a professional game for Hull City came from
our city. Here, we take a look at the playing career of the players born in Hull…
Mel Green
As a youth player, defensive midfielder Mel
Green gained plenty of recognition as he played
representative games for both the East Riding
and Yorkshire. He signed for the Tigers as an
apprentice in 1967 and put pen to paper on
professional terms in October 1969. Green then
had to be very patient as it took two years for him
to finally make his senior debut
Ten days after he celebrated his 20th birthday,
Green was selected by Terry Neill and started a 1-3
away loss against Preston North End at Deepdale
on Saturday 30 October 1971. Green racked up
eight more starts right up to New Year’s Day 1972
which saw him deputise for both Paddy Greenwood
and player/manager Terry Neill.
In January 1973, he made what turned out to be
his final ever appearance for City. Aged 21, Green
played in a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday
at Boothferry Park. He later had a two-month loan
spell at Irish League club Drogheda and left the
Tigers in June 1974.
Subsequently, Green made the move to Cambridge
United and had just one season at the Abbey
outfit King’s Lynn and joined Cambridge City a
couple of years later. After spending two years with
Cambridge City, Green brought his playing career to
an end in 1979.
After retiring, he made his way back to Hull and
switched his attention to playing golf. Green was
elected the Men’s Captain at Hull Golf Club for the
year of 2018.
10 APRIL 2005 | VALLEY PARADE
In the past 20 years, Hull City have been as low as
the third tier on two occasions, earning promotion
both times. Yet, when Peter Taylor’s man travelled
to Bradford City on this day in 2005, telling any
Hull fan that would be the case would have had
them in hysterics.
The Tigers were in second and in need of a win at
Valley Parade which would take them 10 points
clear of Tranmere Rovers in third with four games
to play in their pursuit of back-to-back promotions.
They got off to a flyer when Stuart Elliott scored his
26th league goal of the campaign just four minutes
in.
Bradford won the reverse fixture 1-0 in August, but
Hull went one better when Nick Barmby netted the
second on 68 minutes with a goal that would all but
seal promotion.
This proved to be the last victory of the season for
the Tigers, but a 0-0 draw at home to Swindon Town
six days later was enough to get them over the line
and finish second to Luton Town.
25
The Bantams ended up in 11th, and wouldn’t
face their Yorkshire rivals until their League Cup
encounter in 2022, which League Two Bradford
won 2-1 against Shota Arveladze’s Championship
side.
In Their Own Words
Fábio Carvalho
STATS:
With four goals in four games, confidence is peaking
at the right time for Fábio Carvalho.
Making his 100th senior appearance and scoring
a brace that propelled Hull City on their way to
three points against Cardiff City, Saturday really
was the perfect day for Fábio Carvalho.
A sublime first-time volley from a headed clearance
and finishing off a slick team move, two-goal
Carvalho helped the Tigers end an unwanted sixgame
winless streak to register a 3-1 victory in the
Welsh capital, with Jaden Philogene also bagging
at the Cardiff City Stadium. And for Carvalho, he
was delighted that the team’s hard work came to
fruition on his big milestone.
“I am just happy to be out there and helping the
team and we got what we needed which was the
three points – that’s the most important thing
considering the lack of results we have had,” said
Carvalho.
“We had a good couple of training sessions, not just
individually but as a whole team, and we knew what
the game plan was, and we stuck to it. I just went
out there and just did what the gaffer told me to
do, which was to play with freedom, and I got two
goals, and we got the win.
“I have been practising that type of finishing [for
the first goal] and with both of my feet. It fell nicely
to my left foot, and I struck it sweetly and I knew if
I kept it low then there’s a good chance of it being
on target and going in.
Heritage Number: #1144
Hull City Career:
14 appearances, 7 goals
28
“It’s something we have been working on in terms
of each other’s movements – me, Ozan [Tufan],
and Abdüş [Ömür] – knowing if one goes long then
the other comes short and we were just in sync, and
it was instinctively as well,” added Carvalho. “I did a
little flick around the corner and Abdüş was there,
so he just played it off to Ozan and he then found
my run as I was trying to get in the box.”
Having scored seven goals in 14 games so far,
the Liverpool loanee is thriving in his temporary
switch to East Yorkshire. The 21-year-old explained
the impact that Liam Rosenior has had on his
development.
“For me, he is one of the best managers that I have
worked under,” exclaimed Carvalho. “He has his
way of playing and we are going to stick by him
because he gives us confidence and he sticks out his
neck for us.
“I have been able to go to him for advice both
football and non-football related and that’s what
you want from a manager, in being able to speak to
someone like a father figure.
“Every day that I come in, I am excited to train, and
I am excited to learn from other players and the
gaffer and his coaching staff, so I am thankful for
being here; I love it! I feel like I have improved. I
also feel like I have matured off the pitch, which is
important because that helps me perform whilst
on the pitch.”
Loan Watch
The Tigers have a number of players out on loan gaining experience elsewhere.
Here, we take a look at how our loanees are getting on…
We start our loan report in Peru as Yuriel Celi
netted his first goal for Club Universitario de
Deportes in their 1-0 victory over Alianza Atlético.
Being an unused substitute in the last three games,
the midfielder started the Liga 1 Apertura fixture,
converting his spot-kick by sending goalkeeper
Diego Meliá the wrong way to convert the winner.
The 22-year-old has featured five times this season,
with Universitario sitting second in the league table.
Heading over to Brazil, Óscar Estupiñán has netted
his first goals for EC Bahia, scoring four in six games.
Netting his first in a 4-0 win over Moto-Club MA
in the first round of the Copa Do Brasil, the striker
netted a hat-trick against AD Jequié in a 4-1 semifinal
second leg victory in the Campeonato Baiano.
Returning to England, Ryan Longman netted his
second goal for Millwall in their narrow 2-1 defeat
against Rotherham United. Two minutes after
coming on, the 23-year-old netted an equalising
goal before Charlie Wyke netted the winner for
the Millers four minutes from time. The winger has
featured 31 times for the Lions.
RYAN WOODS
In the division below, Ryan Woods has been an
influential figure in Exeter City’s recent rise up
the Sky Bet League One table. Starting the last
three games for the Grecians, the 30-year-old has
featured 11 times for Exeter, with Gary Caldwell’s
side unbeaten in their last six games.
Harry Vaughan has featured eight times for Bristol
Rovers, but has missed their last three league
games, while Xavier Simons has featured twice in
March for Fleetwood Town after recovering from
injury, starting against Charlton Athletic before
coming off the bench against Cheltenham Town.
He has featured 11 times in total for the Cod Army.
Defender Andy Smith has also featured 11 times
for his loan club Cheltenham Town, starting the last
two league fixtures.
In Sky Bet League Two, Thimothée Lo-Tutala has
played a key role in Doncaster Rovers’ surge up the
table. The 21-year-old has kept six clean sheets in
13 appearances, keeping five of them in his last six
for Grant McCann’s side, including an incredible
save in a 1-0 victory over promotion chasing
Wrexham earlier this month.
RYAN LONGMAN
Fellow goalkeeper Harvey Cartwright recently
suffered an injury at Grimsby Town. The 21-yearold,
who captained his boyhood club in a 1-0 win
40

THIMOTHÉE LO-TUTALA
Fellow Under-21s’ player Alfie Taylor has only
featured twice for St Patrick’s Athletic, with both
games coming in the Leinster Senior Cup, with the
Hull-born defender being an unused substitute five
Aidan Durkan
Scoring a brace in the Under-18s’ most recent fixture against Cardiff
City, Aidan Durkan is delighted to be back amongst the goals.
The first-year scholar has been in a rich vein of
form recently, netting four goals in five games for
Chad Gribble’s side.
“It is good to be scoring goals,” said Durkan. “When
Chad said that I was going to come on for the start
of the second half, I realised it was my chance to
come on to try and make an impact and get a result
for the team. I tried to make the best possible
impact I could have done and as a team and myself,
we did very well in the second half and got a good
result out of it.”
“I think it would be the first time ever the Under-
18s would have reached the play-offs so that is a
big thing for the club and for the academy, but I feel
it is also a challenge for us first-years going into our
next year to try and do it again.
“We’re not there yet and we still have quite a few
games left to go. It would be nice to see us get into
the play-offs and be one of the best teams in our
league, and I think we do deserve it for how hard
we have all worked this year.”
Already featuring for the Under-18s and the Under-
21s as an Under-16 last season, the forward is
eager to make up for lost time after missing out the
majority of the 2023/24 campaign due to injury.
“I had an injury back in September so I was out for
the majority of the first half of the season. Coming
back midway through January, I felt fit and ready to
go and since I have come back, I have done well by
fighting for a place in the team,” explained Durkan.
“I think now with me getting the game time, I feel
like I have had that chance to prove myself and I
have taken it. I now just want to carry on, keep my
place in the team, continue this form and hope this
run can carry on and make sure that I’m looking
after myself both on and off the pitch.”
The Under-18s currently sit fifth in the Northern
table with eight games remaining. Looking to
make a late push for the national play-offs, today
the Under-18s face second-placed Sheffield
Wednesday at the Middlewood Training Ground.
The Owls currently sit six points ahead of the
Tigers, with Durkan determined to close the gap to
their Yorkshire rivals.
Under-21s
Conor Sellars’ Under-21 side have
recorded three successive victories in
the Professional Development League.
After a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City, the
Tigers have registered wins over Colchester
United, Burnley and Watford.
Against Colchester, Tyrell Sellars-Fleming hit the
post before Oliver Green saw his finish kept out by
goalkeeper Tom Collins, as the ball rolled across the
goal line. On the 23rd minute, City took the lead as
Vaughn Covil picked out Green to stroke the ball
home.
Three minutes into the second half, City doubled
their lead as Sincere Hall’s effort was parried by
Collins into the path of Bora Aydınlık to convert.
Sellars-Fleming netted a third three minutes later
with a looping header at the back post before
goalkeeper Callum Yam saved a spot-kick from
Hakeem Sandah.
Three minutes from the save, City netted a fourth
on the counter through Sellars-Fleming before
Colchester pulled a goal back late on through
substitute Kai Martin.
Heading into a successive home fixture at the
Dransfield Stadium, it took the Tigers just
two minutes to open the scoring as Hall
punished the Burnley defence from
close range. Tommy McDermott would
equalise for the visitors five minutes
later before Green saw a penalty saved
a minute later by Lewis Forshaw.
Green was not to be denied on the 25th
minute as he rifled home Rocco Coyle’s
corner before a third was netted five minutes
into the second half through Sellars-Fleming
Under-18s
The Under-18s have netted eight
goals in their last two Professional
Development League fixtures.
Welcoming Burnley to Bishop Burton College at
the end of March, the young Tigers exacted their
revenge on the Clarets with a 4-0 victory. After
losing 5-0 against Burnley the fixture before, City
got off to the best start as Under-16 defender
Calvin Okike rifled home eight minutes in.
Ten minutes later, Lucas Dawson netted a second
when he capitalised on a mistake by Burnley
goalkeeper Felix Chester. On 30 minutes, a trialist
made it 3-0 as Ronnie Kelly latched on to Joe
Batty’s long ball, with the striker squaring the ball
to the Trialist to convert into an empty net.
Aidan Durkan netted a fourth in the
second half as Anthony Onoh’s
throw-in was flicked by Durkan
into the path of Harry Spence.
Finding Jaedyn Chibanga with the
next pass, the winger evaded
a number of challenges
from defenders and
the goalkeeper, but his
finish hit the post, with
Durkan quickest to
react to fire home.
Travelling to the Cardiff
International Sports
Stadium four days later,
Chad Gribble’s side raced
into a 2-0 lead as Stan
Hewitt converted from the
penalty spot after five minutes
before Mason Johnson netted a
second with a headed finish.
Academy
From the Dugout
After defeating Watford 1-0 to make it three successive wins, Lead PDP
Coach Conor Sellars spoke on his side’s recent form.
Sincere Hall’s last-minute finish saw the Tigers
defeat the Hornets 1-0 at Vicarage Road on
Monday. After defeating Colchester United 4-1
and Burnley 6-1 at the Dransfield Stadium in
the previous two fixtures prior to the trip to
Hertfordshire, Sellars was delighted with the win.
“I’m delighted for the lads to make it three out of
three. We kept a clean sheet and to score in the
90th minute with a winner is always a great feeling
so I am just really happy for the players,” said
Sellars.
Focusing on a number of individuals, Sellars spoke
on goalscorer Hall on his recent form, goalkeeper
Owen Foster, who was one of three changes to the
side, and defender Jack Leckie about his recovery
from a long-term injury to feature for the first time
as a substitute.
“Sincere is a player who has magic in him. We are
putting more pressure on him to be more in games
in attacking areas where he can create and score.
He has been really good since returning from injury
and some of his individual moments are fantastic.
“‘Fozzy' played really well. He’s found himself back
up to Callum (Yam) recently, but sometimes having
that gap in-between playing helps you rethink and
revaluate performances. He has been working
really hard behind the scenes to make sure that
when the chance comes, he takes it. He made some
outstanding saves and deserved his clean sheet, as
well as the team, so I am just delighted for him and
hopefully he can keep that form up.
“I am really happy for Jack. He has had to remain
really patient. Through his injury he has had
knockdowns. He had issues after his ankle surgery
and then he injured his other ankle straight after
in a training session, so it has been a really tough
season for him. He is a superb kid who puts
everything into every day. He was absolutely
delighted that he had his first game in seven months
so I’m happy for him.”
55
With eight games of the season left, Sellars is
hoping the Under-21s can finish the season
strongly, with the team facing Wigan Athletic away
on Friday.
“We just need to go into it and try and replicate
the consistency that we have shown recently,”
explained Sellars. “We have a lot of games coming
up so if we can keep playing well and working as
hard as we can, then there is no reason why we
cannot replicate the performances that we are
asking for.”
