Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Westside Market on Broadway in Cape May. This local
favorite serves up breakfast and lunch plus quality meats, cheeses and
various options for your next catered event.
The vibe: It was a quiet Friday morning, and we were craving a
delicious breakfast. We stopped in to pick up our takeout order, that
we conveniently ordered online, and owners Chris and Kristen were
behind the counter as welcoming as always. Kristen filled me in on
some efficiency updates they made inside to gear up for the busy summer
season. The counter/takeout pick-up has moved toward the center
of the market and the kiosks to place an order are just to the right of
that. A few tables are also off to the side to take a load of while you wait
for your order, or to enjoy your food. Everyone is so friendly, it makes it
difficult to leave.
The food: It’s been a while since Nicole and Kayla picked up breakfast
from Westside. We’ve had lunch a slew of times, so it was nice to get
an order in earlier in the day... and it held us over that we barely needed
lunch. Kayla went for the Southwest breakfast bowl packed with scrambled
eggs, cheddar cheese, chorizo sausage, peppers, onions, tomatoes,
roasted corn, black beans, salsa and guacamole over a layer of tots. To
say her jaw hit the floor when I handed it to her is an understatement —
and we can confirm it was just as good as it looked. Nicole enjoyed one
of their “Eggcellent sandwiches” — fried egg, cooper sharp cheese and
pork roll topped with salt, pepper and ketchup on a Farmhouse roll. A
crispy, not at all greasy, hashbrown also made its way into the order...
how could it not?
The takeaway: A breakfast from Westside Market is always a good
start to the day and this time it really hit the spot. In addition to our
meals, they offer plenty of options for a tasty breakfast including threeegg
omelets, avocado toast, bagels cream cheese, breakfast burritos and
much more. Check them out when you’re getting a early start to the day.
Westside Market is open Wednesday-Sunday from 9am to 5pm!

with Caribbean flair, listen to a few jam bands and
domestic draft.
This year brings new ownership to the beachfront
restaurant and bar. Rooftop dining, live music, fresh
local seafood and signature orange crushes — the
fun awaits!
A huge hit and locals’ favorite for a reason. Excellent
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Birders know it as Greater Yellowlegs,
Ornithologists a Tringa Sandpiper.
But to the old Market Gunners,
it was the “Tell Tale,” the shorebird
whose loud alarm call warned
approaching shorebird flocks of danger, spoiling
their shots.
If you go online and call up Thomas
Eakin’s painting “Whistling for Plover,” you
can see how easily the birds were slaughtered
in the late 1800s when the slaughter of shorebirds
for market was at its peak.
The crumbled birds around the crouched
gunner are not plover or “bullheads” as
they were known to the gunner, but Greater
Yellowlegs. You can still see yellowlegs in
the same Delaware Bay Marshes depicted
in the Eakin’s painting — showing the winter-withered
marsh grass of early Spring and
the sails of oyster schooners on the horizon.
It’s an idyllic scene despite the subject
matter because the industrial-scale slaughter
of shorebirds crippled North American
shorebird numbers and diminished the great
Spring push of northbound birds.
Mostly recovered after a century of protection
and proactive management, from now
until early June, residents and visitors can
thrill to the sight and sound of thousands of
shorebirds making their way from wintering
areas in Central and South America to
the Canadian Arctic where most will breed.
Greater Yellowlegs step off the northbound
train of birds at the edge of the great boreal
forest, the ecotone separating forest and tundra
where in some tree-studded bog the birds
will court, start the cycle anew.
But for most of April and into May, these
sword-billed tringa’s with flashing yellow
legs will stalk Cape May tide pools in
search of small fish and other aquatic prey.
Some shorebirds are pickers other’s probers.
Greater Yellowlegs are stabbers, visual hunters
adept at herding fish into the shallows.
Sometimes forming interception lines, you
can see the birds herding fish in the shallows
of the South Cape May Meadows and the edge
of Bunker Pond. By late April, the birds will
gather in V-shaped flocks and wing their way
north. Engage this bird family specialized to
exploit the places where land and water meet.
Able to vault entire hemispheres in a single
bound, disappear in plain sight and outfly
even the rapacious efforts of hunting falcons,
this bird group stands, literally at evolution’s
high-water mark. As a Cape May resident
or visitor, you are a casual stroll away from
appreciating their refined excellence.
Superhero TV shows are streaming
more than ever, but not gonna lie…
I’m not sure I like them. Look, I’m
a comic book geek from long ago.
Shows like Superman starring George
Reeves, Japan’s classic Ultraman, and Adam
West’s campy Batman (Pow! Bam!)… They’ve
been a big deal on TV for decades, right?
There are an estimated 100+ superhero
shows on TV today. Give or take, about half of
them are from the Marvel Universe (think Iron
Man and The Hulk) and the other half from
DC (Batman and Superman). Today’s superhero
shows are starting to feel like so much
relationship angst and not enough of the Pow!
and Bam! It’s like The Avengers meets 90210.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ll watch these
shows anyway. Comic books were some of
the best parts of my childhood, so to see
them come alive with real action is alluring.
But as the storylines on some of these
shows wear on, and the soap opera begins
to win out over that action, I lose interest.
My colleague, Professor Nick, says all this
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
superdrama started with Smallville (2001), a
show that lasted 10 seasons and had a lot of
emotion. “But there was a worthwhile payoff
in the end,” he says. “It was all leading to Clark
finally putting on the cape.”
You can’t deny that some of these shows
have been very successful. CW’s The Flash ran
for nearly a decade (no pun intended), and it
ended a year ago. The quirky, almost New Girl
influenced Supergirl lasted six seasons.
Still, other shows had only a couple seasons
before the plug was pulled. Marvel’s Iron
Fist, which got bad reviews but more favorable
audience reaction, only featured two seasons;
the more critically acclaimed Luke Cage also
only lasted two seasons.
Many times, I’ve begun watching some of
these shows out of curiosity only to get bored
by loads of angst and less action. Arrow, based
on DC’s Green Arrow, had promise. I watched
much of the first season. Then it began to
drag on. Too much talk. Others disagree — it
received high praise and lasted eight seasons!
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD also scored
well and lasted seven seasons. It’s better than
most. DC’s Titans had a four-season run, but
it gets bogged down in emotion. Maybe these
shows can find a better balance between
exhausting melodrama and spirited adventure.
It might mean a limited series on a
intentionally shorter story arc. These shows
will be limited for me if there’s too much
yackin’ and not enough wackin’! Sorry… just
wanted to rhyme. You get the idea.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, grab your tickets for jazz fest!
This month, as Cape May enthusiastically
welcomes fans to town for the
Exit Zero Jazz Festival, spare a thought
for the innovators that brought this
music into the mainstream.
These days, it’s easy to forget that jazz —
now recognized as a uniquely American art
form, and music researchers say is most popular
among people with high IQs — was once
considered dangerous. It wasn’t just the scorn
that every older generation heaps on the next
generation’s music — jazz faced legal barriers.
Jazz is commonly traced to Charles
“Buddy” Bolden, a New Orleans-born musician
who created “a looser, more improvised
version of ragtime” combined with blues,
according to the National Park Service. Bolden
— known as King Bolden — was, per the great
Louis Armstrong, “a one-man genius that
was ahead of them all.” The music delighted
young musicians and dancers of all races,
effectively erasing the color line in nightclubs.
This shocked the white establishment, who
saw jazz as “sex rendered as music.” Other
critics said the energetic music was “wearing”
and could shorten life spans — views the
Illinois Supreme Court cited in 1923 to justify
shuttering a dance hall. Cities like New York
tried to limit jazz performances with “cabaret
cards.” From about 1940 to 1967, a New York
City Cabaret Identification Card was required
for all nightclub workers. A performer could
lose the card for reasons including foul language,
and the system was rife with racism
— for most white performers, a bribe could get
back the card. For many black performers, the
revocation of cabaret cards resulted in the loss
of their livelihood. Stars like Billie Holiday,
whose hit “Strange Fruit” disturbed the establishment,
Chet Baker, Charlie Parker and
Thelonious Monk, lost their cards. Others,
like Frank Sinatra, refused to apply for one,
citing the humiliating process.
Today, jazz is considered “America’s classical
music,” and some of its finest talents are
coming to Cape May for the Exit Zero Jazz
Festival, a “musical feast featuring hundreds
of musicians and thousands of visitors.” Visit
exitzerojazzfestival.com for more on performers
and tickets, including a VIP pass for all
performances at Convention Hall, and a Hops
pass for smaller venues. Reservations are
strongly suggested, though walk-up tickets
may be available. Enjoy artists like Camille
Thurman, called a “classic double threat” by
NPR, on Friday, April 19 from 6-7:15pm; or the
Matthew Whitaker Quintet, Sunday, April 21,
from 2-3:15pm.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I know you have had this question before,
but it’s on my mind now and I wonder what
your take on it is. My niece is getting married
next month, and my wife is on the hunt for the
“perfect” dress. She bought two and asked
me what I thought. I told her and it didn’t go
well. Why am I in the doghouse? Did she really
want me to lie? The dresses she chose are for a
20-year-old, who has never had kids or hips.
Now she’s threatening not to attend the wedding
and making me go alone. Any words of
wisdom? — Doghouse Bound
Dear Doghouse
Fear not. This is an easy fix, even for those
who are not as tactful as they could be. We
wonder what she will say about you as you
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
squeeze into that suit. Offer to take her shopping
so you will be in a position to opine on the
spot. Be gentle and positive. We see a trip to
Caroline’s Boutique or Willow and Stone. Be
proactive. Something like, “I think this would
look terrific on you?” Then be sure to pick out a
fabulous piece of jewelry to go with it at Splash
or Henry’s. All will be well.
Dear Answer Lady
My son has been unable to get a job in his
field. He was hired out of college, but it was for
a short-term project. He’s been laying around
the house now for months and when I suggested
he get a job at one of the shops along the
Mall, he said, “It’s beneath my skill set.” His
father and I are furious and hard-pressed to
figure out what his skill set really is other than
mooching off us. Plus, it is unfair to his sister
who is out there working two jobs and going to
college. What do you think will motivate this
unambitious son of ours? — Fed Up
Dear Fed Up
One thing that will motivate him is to stop
coddling him. We reckon he is not contributing
to the food bill, the electric bill or even the
laundry. Present him with a bill for his share of
the expenses. When he laughs at that, cut off
his phone service. Take his TV out of his room
and remove his laptop. When he screams and
threatens to move out, calmly nod and offer
to help. As to his “skill set,” the Answer Lady
is sure the Ugly Mug, Delaney’s, and Mudhen
are all looking for bartenders and line cooks.
There’s a skill set that will never fail.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
PRINCESS is a 12-year-old girl who is considered
a hospice foster. She has mammary cancer,
suffers from kidney and bladder stones,
but you’d never know it. She is very sweet and
acts like a puppy, loving everyone who comes
her way. Princess is on a special diet for her
stones and loves treats. Please give this girl a
loving home to live out the rest of her life.
STORMY is a three-year-old girl who came to
the shelter when her owner was ready to have
her euthanized for her skin. Her condition
improved with a high quality, grain-free diet
and medications with supplements. In a few
months, she will be much healthier and able to
be spayed. Stormy would do well in a home
with other dogs, cats and children.
LUNA is a beautiful husky who came to the
shelter when her owners could no longer care
for her. She is a bit nervous, but this sweet and
sensitive girl has lived with children before
and is good with other dogs and cats. Luna has
a skin issue that will take patience and care.
She would thrive in a home that gives her the
TLC she deserves.
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
CHAMPION suffers from a disorder called
Cerebellar Hypoplasia, but doesn’t let that
slow him down! CH can cause jerky movements
or trouble walking. Champion feels safe
when cuddled and carried. He is a sweetheart
and loves to sleep next to his humans. Champion
must be kept indoors. If interested in
adopting him, contact the shelter.
SUZETTE is a two-year-old girl who came
to the shelter as a stray. She’s lived as an outdoor
cat her entire life and it’s time she moves
indoors with a loving family. Suzette suffers
from skin allergies and thrives on Science Diet
Z/D dry cat food, keeping her allergies at bay.
She is quiet in her cage but welcomes pets. She
would make a lovely family pet.
GEMMA came to the shelter from a hoarding
situation. She is a 17-year-old indoor cat who
is very afraid, but sweet when you pet her.
Gemma will need time to adjust, and a quiet
home will suit her best with no other dogs or
children. She needs a warm, loving home that
she can explore and feel safe. If Interested in
this girl, contact the shelter.
