TOUCHLINE TALK
GARY ROWETT
Good evening and welcome to our Sky Bet Championship game against Cardiff City.
It is great to be back at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park for the first of successive
home matches. This week is not going to be wholly defining in the outcome of our
season, but we would be naïve to think that these two fixtures are not a great opportunity to
take show what we are about as a team and take control of our situation.
You felt the impact of the crowd during the win over Preston North End and I know that will
continue to be a powerful weapon in our armoury between now and the end of the season.
There was fantastic energy inside the Stadium that afternoon, it was a real flavour of what
we can expect this week, and I thought, as a group, we took confidence from that going to
Leicester City.
Whilst they made us defend for large periods of the game, we navigated that challenge
well and had some bright moments of our own. We got into some good positions and pulled
ourselves level by half-time. The goal itself was the result of something we identified to hurt
Leicester, and credit to Jay Stansfield for his discipline and determination in putting the
theory into practice.
It was just a shame, irrespective of the opposition, that we were unable to apply pressure
like this more often and as the second-half progressed, we lost some of our control, and
then had the disappointment of conceding a decisive late goal for the second time in three
matches.
At this stage of the campaign, though, we have to quickly move on and tonight, as the
was the case against Preston, it is about putting in a complete 90-minute performance and
maintain our concentration levels throughout.
This is critical as whilst Cardiff might be in a comfortable spot on the table, they may look
to try some new things which could present a different challenge. Their manager will also no
doubt have them well organised and motivated to not let their season peter out, especially
on the back of losing at the weekend.
Cardiff will not, though, have a home crowd in full voice behind them. The atmosphere will
be electric, and on the pitch we have got to use that. At times we may have to be patient,
but I know the supporters will stick with the team. I cannot thank everyone enough for their
support since I returned to the Club.
Bluenoses will also be buoyed by the news from the early hours of yesterday morning and,
along with them, I look forward to hearing more about the Club’s exciting plans for the future
from Chairman of the Board, Tom Wagner, who will be in attendance tonight.
Keep Right On,
CAPTAIN’S COLUMN
DION SANDERSON
Good evening and welcome to St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park for our Sky Bet
Championship fixture against Cardiff City.
What we need to do is thrive under the pressure of these remaining games, feed off
the energy we know you Bluenoses will provide from the stands, and take every game as
one we need to go for the three points in. Now is the time to go out there and prove what we
are all about.
The game against Leicester City on Saturday was tough to take, especially knowing that
we could have gone to one of the best teams in the league and taken a result. We battled as
hard as we could, but it was not to be.
I think we did a lot of things right, though, and really frustrated them at times, as well
as putting in huge amounts of effort across the pitch. You can tell it did not go unnoticed
because, despite the loss, every single Bluenose applauded us and sang after the game,
which is something we massively appreciate.
Like I said post-match, I think we showed them too much respect at times. We needed to
go and press them more and be on the front foot, which is how we got our goal. We will look
to make those corrections going forward. It all comes down to that concentration in the
final moments. Too many times this season we have given away late goals, and that needs
to stop. At this level, you get punished for not being on it for the full 90 minutes and beyond.
That being said, I would like to shout out Jay Stansfield for his goals in consecutive
games. He has come out and silenced any doubters and continues to run himself into the
ground for this club and has been integral all season.
Tonight’s opponents, Cardiff City, have had a decent season and are in a position where
they do not have to worry about the threat of going down. At the same time, they are not
really competing for play-offs either, but that does not mean they have nothing to play
for. They are a tough, stingy team defensively and have some talent going forward. Their
manager will not accept them taking their foot off the gas, so we must go into it at 100%.
We have been in every day recently making sure that we are as prepared as possible for
these back-to-back home games. The dressing room remains a really positive one; we
need to stick together now more than ever and make sure that we are taking points from
these upcoming matches.
Finally, everyone is excited by the plans for a Sports Quarter and word-class new stadium
on the former Wheels site. You cannot doubt the Owners’ ambition for the Club and the city
of Birmingham, and we are all excited to be on this journey.
Keep Right On,
MIKE RIGG JOINS BLUES ACADEMY
STAFF APPOINTMENT: ACADEMY TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, MIKE RIGG
Blues are pleased to confirm the appointment
of Mike Rigg to the position of Academy
Technical Director.
The 53-year-old, experienced in creating pathways
between academy and first-team football, joins
with immediate effect and will connect with the
Academy’s existing leadership, Academy Manager
(Football), Liam Daish, and Academy Manager
(Operations), Louisa Collis, laying the foundations to
enable growth, as the Football Club works towards
its ambition of regaining Category 1 status ahead of
the 2025/26 season.
Rigg brings a wealth of coaching, administrative
and strategic experience from the professional
game, working in the top four divisions of the English
pyramid and across age-group activity in Men’s,
Women’s and international football.
He was most recently Technical Director at UAE
Pro League Club Al Jazira from 2021, and the Level
5 Technical Directors Licence holder has previously
occupied the same position at Burnley, the Clarets’
first such appointment, Manchester City, Queens
Park Rangers and FA Wales during his 34-year
career.
Rigg will primarily be based at The Knighthead
Training and Academy Grounds.
Chief Executive Officer, Garry Cook, said: “Nothing
is more important to the future success of this
football club than the Academy. That is why we have
appointed Mike Rigg, a senior, respected leader
in the professional game. His goal is to make the
Academy world class, attracting the best young
talent and developing them into outstanding
professionals and people. He will be given the time
and the necessary support to make the Birmingham
City Academy revered across the globe.”
Academy Technical Director, Mike Rigg, said: “I
spoke to Garry Cook and Craig Gardner and they
shared the plans and vision for the Club. To be part
of that, at a club with the history, traditions and
potential of Birmingham City is really exciting. It is a
really important time as we work towards Category 1
status. It is a significant challenge, but it is essential
to attract and develop the best possible players.
“I have been fortunate over the past 20-plus years
to see youth development on a global scale and the
EPPP (Elite Player Performance Plan) introduced
by the Premier League in 2012 has created the best
youth development system in the world. Ensuring we
are at the top table is critical.
“However, youth development is something you
have to consistently work on, seven days a week, 365
days of the year. Player recruitment, player coaching
and development, education and welfare are all
fundamental to what we do. We will be looking to
make our Academy world leading in all these aspects
in the years to come.
“The immediate plans will be to achieve Category 1
status but this is just the start. Our ambitions are to
be recognised as a world class youth development
programme.”
Welcome to Blues, Mike!
GARY ROWETT RARING TO GO FOR
SUCCESSIVE B9 MATCHES
GARY ROWETT IS LOOKING FORWARD TO BACK-TO-BACK HOME FIXTURES, STARTING WITH
TONIGHT’S VISIT OF CARDIFF CITY.
Blues’ latest Sky Bet Championship encounter
saw them fall to a late defeat against
Leicester City, but they will look to use that
result as motivation heading into their first of three
remaining 2023/24 fixtures at St. Andrew’s @
Knighthead Park.
In the last home encounter, against Preston North
End on Easter Monday, the Interim Manager earned his
first victory since returning to the Club as Birmingham
City earned maximum points to end a three-game
winless run in B9.
Speaking to BluesTV at the Birmingham City Elite
Performance and Innovation Centre, Rowett explained
that positives would be taken from the defeat at
Leicester and highlighted the B9 games as an
opportunity to showcase the quality within the squad.
“Coming off the back of the Preston game, it was
a nice flavour of what we can expect in the home
games in terms of the atmosphere and a positive
performance. I think the team has performed a lot
better at home this season than they have away from
home, which is something you would expect, but
something we need to work on in two games’ time.
“It’s a big week and like I said after the game, you
never want to feel that way but certainly Leicester
away, I don’t think many teams are going to get much
from the game even though we felt we were in a
position to go and get a point, but I think you take the
positives out of the performance and knowing a week
like this is going to have a bigger chance to define your
season than perhaps Leicester away.
“It’s about us doing what we need to do at home, it is
about us performing with the right intensity and quality
on and off the ball and if we can do that, I am sure
we can have a positive week and again, it’s another
opportunity to show what we are all about as a team.”
Blues are expected to be backed by another raucous
crowd this evening versus the Bluebirds, hoping to
earn back-to-back home successes for the fourth
time this season.
Having tasted that winning feeling upon his return
to St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, Rowett is hungry
for more and explained the importance of the loyal
Bluenose supporters heading into the contest.
“It was a pleasure to be out there again against
Preston. That home atmosphere and that home
feeling of that win, that had been a long time coming,
and we have to go and do the same sort of thing again.
“We know the crowd will turn up, we know the fans
will be in full voice and we know the atmosphere will
be electric, so we have got to use that. At times, if it
doesn’t go our way, we have to be patient and keep
believing in what we are doing and we have to make
sure that we do everything we can to make life very
difficult for this Cardiff side.
“We have to turn up as a team, but the one thing
I will never doubt is the fans will turn up with that
atmosphere.”
CARDIFF CITY
BLUEBIRDS UNDER
BULUT’S WING
Inconsistency and uncertainty have been the buzz
words around Cardiff City since the turn of the year,
such has been their fluctuating form.
The Bluebirds lost five of their first eight games
of 2024, then had a four-game winning streak that
included a home success over high-flying Ipswich
Town to keep them on the fringes of the play-offs.
Yet for every silver lining a cloud has not been far
behind. The Welsh side’s winning run abruptly ended in
demoralising fashion by neighbours Swansea City and
the Easter period once again highlighted their Jekyll
and Hyde persona. A 0-2 defeat at Cardiff City Stadium
to Sunderland on Good Friday was transformed two
days later with an excellent response at play-off
chasing Coventry City – winning 1-2.
So last weekend’s 1-3 reverse in CF11 to Hull City – the
Tigers’ first win in seven games – was even more galling
and brought up a ninth defeat on their own patch this
term. It effectively ended Cardiff’s lingering hopes of
gatecrashing the play-off party from 11th spot and had
manager Erol Bulut bemoaning a lack of consistency.
He explained to BBC Radio Wales: “This is the
Championship, first of all. Anything can happen. We
have had this all season. We’ve been really good for
three, four or five games then we have a break and don’t
have the consistency. This is our biggest point about
the team when we think about next year. We have to
manage the players and the players must manage
themselves to be consistent.
“There have been too many ups and downs during the
season. You can see then you cannot push to the higher
level without this, you’re only left in mid-table.”
Plans for next season are in stasis because Bulut
remains on a one-year contract that expires in the
summer. Such dugout uncertainty had the club’s
Supporters’ Trust expressing their concerns to the
board over the current situation. Bulut has repeatedly
expressed his desire to remain with the Bluebirds long-
20 | BLUES NEWS BIRMINGHAM CITY V CARDIFF CITY

term, but no offer of a contract extension has led to
background noise of growing discontent and instability.
Cardiff had a brush with relegation last season in
finishing just five points clear of the drop zone, but
are already seven points better off this time thanks
to favoured 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 systems that help them
control proceedings.
Although Jak Alnwick was between the posts up until
February, USA international Ethan Horvath has been
No.1 since and has three clean sheets in 11 outings.
Shielding the former Luton Town promotion winner has
been imposing Greek ever-present Dimitrios Goutas,
alongside Liverpool loanee Nat Phillips since January.
Nigeria international Jamilu Collins has been a regular
at left-back, with 2022/23 Player of the Year Perry Ng
excelling once again at right-back with a career-best
return of six goals.
Further defensive options include long-time
Millwall defender Mahlon Romeo, the colossal Mark
McGuinness and England Under-21s cap Josh Wilson-
Esbrand borrowed from Manchester City.
A plethora of centre-midfield talent helps Cardiff
remain in control and hard to break down. Alongside
long-serving captain Joe Ralls has been combative
Greek international Manolis Siopis as a trusted anchor,
although Welsh icon Aaron Ramsey has been back in
contention this month after a calf injury and the unsung
Ryan Wintle is a league centurion for the club.
Down the left-wing Nottingham Forest loanee Josh
Bowler has been given the nod more often than not this
campaign, although Republic of Ireland international
Callum O’Dowda has pressed his case since returning
from injury last month. On the opposite flank Karlan
Grant, a £15 million signing for West Bromwich Albion
in 2020, has scored six times on a season-long loan.
Another former Baggie in Callum Robinson, once
prolific at Preston North End, has recently returned
from a three-month lay-off and scored in this fixture
last season.
Cardiff have scored twice or more on six away
days this term and have started with David Turnbull
and Yakou Meite in their last two outings. Scotland
international Turnbull was Motherwell and Celtic
Player of the Year north of the border but is yet to open
his account since his January switch, while battlehardened
Ivorian Meite last found the target in October.
Wales international Rubin Colwill’s aerial presence
and invention have often been a fallback option from
off the bench this term, although he is a doubt tonight
with an ankle problem. Powerhouse Famara Diedhiou,
an Africa Cup of Nations winner with Senegal in 2021,
has been loaned from Granada to help provide more
attacking clout and youngster Ollie Tanner has had a
breakthrough campaign at this level to be proud of. Yet
the towering Kion Etete’s absence with a groin injury
has been a big miss of late.
IN THE DUGOUT
Erol Bulut
DOB: 30 January 1975
Appointed: June 2023
Three managers in Steve Morison, Mark
Hudson and Sabri Lamouchi were
responsible for Cardiff’s lowest finishing
position since 2003 last season, so the
progress made under Erol Bulut this term has
been there for all to see.
Although the former Fenerbahce boss arrived
at a standing start last June, the passionate
tactician has the Welsh club comfortably in
mid-table and, until recently, even fancying
their chances of a late play-off push.
There have been criticisms of his approach
not being on the front foot enough, yet the
49-year-old boasts a 40% win ratio in his first
role in British football and is hoping to extend
his stay in CF11 beyond his current one-year
deal.
A former coach in the Turkish Super Lig
with Yeni Malatyaspor and Alanyaspor, prior
to working alongside Turkey’s Under-21s,
he commented in March: “I cannot make a
decision because it is not in my hands. The
plans the club should make for the new season
- transfers, pre-season and things like that -
we haven’t had any meetings in that direction.
I would like to stay, of course, and continue
to build with the players. When we look back
to the start of the season and now, there has
been big progress.”
CARDIFF CITY
KEY THREE
12. NATHANIEL PHILLIPS Centre-back | DOB: 21 March 1997
The Liverpool loanee has only had a dozen appearances for Cardiff City since arriving
in January but already has the Bluebirds clamouring for a permanent signature.
The imperious centre-back has made quite an impression since his arrival, with
temporary stints at Stuttgart in 2019/20, during AFC Bournemouth’s promotion of
2021/22 and with Celtic for the first six months of this campaign, proving beneficial.
Although the Bolton-born ball-winner’s has Premier League and UEFA
Champions League appearances for his parent club, if he cannot establish himself
in Liverpool’s backline next season Cardiff boss Erol Bulut would gladly make his
stay in South Wales permanent. He remarked: “Nat came in January and settled
in really well. He’s one of the leaders in defence. If I’m the coach here again next
season, I don’t know, but I would like to see him again here.”
8. JOE RALLS
Centre-midfielder | DOB: 29 July 1999
The all-action box-to-box midfielder has been synonymous with Cardiff for
more than a decade and continues to set the standards.
The 30-year-old is topping the club’s assists charts this season with seven, in
what is his 13th campaign at the Cardiff City Stadium. Having debuted for the club
in 2011, the Bluebirds’ long-term captain was twice named Young Player of the Year
and was a promotion winner to the Premier League in 2018/19.
He has more than 350 league appearances for Cardiff City and is in a unique
position to acknowledge the progress being made under Erol Bulut.
He said: “Looking at it all season, there’s been progress, we’re just outside the top
10 now. It would be great to try and get as high as we can and to finish strongly. The
manager has helped us a lot.”
10. AARON RAMSEY
The current Wales captain went full circle last year when he returned to his
Cardiff roots and to where his career all began.
The Bluebirds’ Young Player of the Year for 2008 went on to have a glittering
career at the highest level with Arsenal, where he was twice crowned Player of the
Year and lifted three FA Cups.
The 33-year-old, once described by Arsene Wenger as a “complete midfielder”,
also lifted silverware with Juventus and Rangers before spending 2022/23 with
Nice.
Although in the twilight of his illustrious career, the 84-capped Wales
international still possesses the vision and peerless technique that made him one
of the best in the business. Knee and calf injuries have plagued this campaign, yet
he has still scored on visits to Leicester City and Ipswich Town, as well as in the
Attacking-midfielder | DOB: 26 December 1990
South Wales derby against Swansea City, and is building back his match sharpness.
A DAY TO REMEMBER
CARDIFF CITY
Organised football has been on the go for
150 years and more now, but when looking
at most of the major clubs, while they may
have moved about a bit in their early days, once
they settled on a home in the late 19th or early
20th century, they have generally stayed put
ever since. Heading off to a new stadium remains
quite a rare event and so when the Cardiff City
Stadium was officially opened for competitive
business on Saturday 8 August 2009, it was a day
to remember.
Riverside AFC had started life at Sophia Gardens
before eventually moving to Ninian Park in
September 1910, two years after they changed
their name to Cardiff City. As an opposition
supporter, Ninian Park was one of the great
grounds to visit if you were a connoisseur of
raucous, intimidating atmospheres, an old
fashioned, bearpit of a stadium where the
supporters were right on top of the action and
very much a part of the game. Although it had
reached the end of its useful life after 99 years, it
would not be an easy act to follow.
Yet right from the outset, the Cardiff City
Stadium did just that. It is different in character,
of course, as a fully modern venue in which to
watch the beautiful game would be, but right from
the outset, so sympathetic was its design that it
transported much of that Ninian Park atmosphere
across Sloper Road with it, launching itself as
one of the very best homes of football for the 21st
century.
It certainly helped that on the
day it hosted its first competitive
fixture, against newly promoted
Scunthorpe United, the Bluebirds
ran riot, ending the opening day
of the season with three points,
four goals and a place at the top
of the Championship table. It all
happened in front of a crowd
of 22,264 that roared on a
Cardiff side that had only just
missed out on the play-offs
the previous season and gave
early notice that there would
be no such mistakes this time
around.
A sickness bug had attacked the Cardiff squad
in the days ahead of the game and Scunthorpe
looked to take full advantage with a swift start
that required David Marshall to make two fine
saves. But from midway through the first-half, City
took command, inspired by the ailing Joe Ledley.
The Welsh international was only able to make it
to half-time, so ill was he before the game, but by
the time he departed, he had helped his side to an
unassailable lead.
The hosts hit the front after 21 minutes, a neat
stroke of fortune in their new home as Peter
Whittingham’s shot cannoned into Michael
Chopra and looped over Joe Murphy and into the
Scunthorpe net. 10 minutes later and it was 2-0,
Ledley firing off a shot that looked
bound for the net, Jay Bothroyd
making sure with a deft diversion
of the ball on its way. On the brink
of half-time, the game was made all
but secure when Chopra, who had
also hit the post earlier, scored his
second and Cardiff’s third, a clever
dummy getting him into position to
score from Bothroyd’s pass.
To their credit, the Iron tightened
things up after the interval,
while Cardiff were content to
keep possession and play within
themselves in front of a full house
that was getting maximum value
from being present on such a historic day. Icing
was duly applied to the cake three minutes into
added time, Chris Burke was brought down in
the box to give Whittingham the chance to slam
home the penalty. It was the first of his 25 goals in
a season in which he topped the Championship’s
goalscoring chart.
The Bluebirds would go on to finish fourth
that season, the first of a hat-trick of top-six
finishes that would all, ultimately, end in play-off
disappointment before, in 2012/13, they ran away
with the Championship to earn a first-ever season
in the Premier League and a place in the top
division for the first time since 1962. The Cardiff
City Stadium has not disappointed.
INTERVIEW
IVAN
SUNJIC
IVAN THE ENGINE
They say that a change is as good as a
rest, and that has proved to be the case
with Croatian midfielder Ivan Sunjic this
campaign. After going out on loan to Hertha
Berlin last term, he returned to St Andrew’s
@ Knighthead Park fired up for another
assault on the Sky Bet Championship. With
31 appearances to his name thus far, he has
been a central figure in every sense, and so it
was clearly time that Blues News caught up
with him.
On the table for conversation was the season
so far and the hard work that still needs to be
done in the run-in, but Sunjic was also quizzed
on his career as a whole and just how it is that
his homeland of Croatia, population 3.8 million,
has become a global footballing powerhouse.
Ivan, thanks for sparing Blues News some time
as you prepare for this hectic run-in to the end
of the season. Going back to your start in the
game, Croatia produces an incredible number
of top players for a country with such a small
population. How do they do it?
I think we have good academies, for sure, and
maybe we’re a little bit lucky as well! I think that
as players, we go to an academy from a young
age, and there is always one style of play all
the way through the years. The results of that
are there for you to see. We have really good
academies. Not all clubs, obviously, but the top
four or five clubs, they produce good young
players.
Do you think that has encouraged players
to stay in Croatia maybe a little bit longer
than they would if those systems were not in
place?
I think it did in the past. But these days
everything has changed a little bit. Young
players, they want to move abroad faster than
they used to, which is a pity. I think for young
players to play in Croatia, it’s really nice, it’s
really good for them to grow up in the game
there.
As a youngster, which players did you look up
to?
To be honest, I didn’t have a role model.
Obviously, the 1998 generation was big in
Croatia. In that World Cup, they were third,
so all of that generation are very important. I
was too young for this, but my dad was always
talking to me about that generation, and so I
looked into them. But player-wise, I didn’t have
a role model.
28 | BLUES NEWS BIRMINGHAM CITY V CARDIFF CITY

BCFC.COM BLUES NEWS | 29

That Croatian team in 1998, it was just a few
years after independence had happened, Croatia
was still a very young country. Do you think that
because of that, players feel they have a bigger
responsibility and are representing Croatia on the
international stage?
Like you said, in terms of history, we were young,
we still are. Before the 1990s, when Yugoslavia was
there, we were a part of that bigger country. But that
1998 team, I think that was a point when the world
started to know us, so football was very important
in that. But then, after that, we had 20 years when
we were waiting for a big result in a tournament
again. Then in two World Cups, in 2018 and 2022, we
won medals again in both of them. Now, because
of this success, people forget that 30 years ago,
Croatia wasn’t even in World Cups! It’s like we set the
standard now. But for me, it’s not realistic that we’ll
always be fighting for medals. Hopefully, we can, but
we have set the standard very high for a country like
ours.
You came to England to join Birmingham City in
2019 and have played a lot of Championship football
now. What have your impressions of the league
been over the years?
To be honest, every season for me is
similar football-wise. During my period,
the level has been quite similar, to be
honest, I don’t think too much really
changed. It is a lot of games, of course,
it is always hard this way, and I think the
consistency is the key in this league.
Either you have that, or you don’t. If
you don’t have it, you struggle, like
this season. That’s the nature
of the game.
There have been some
really good teams in this
league in my time here. The
Leeds team that went up with
Bielsa was amazing. Brentford
had really good players, a good
academy, good scouting and
you see that now in the Premier
League, Brentford is doing very
well. I don’t really look so much at
individual players, I’m considering
the whole team more. There have
been some great teams in the
Championship, and they are the ones
that go up. And every now and again,
a big team from the Premier League
comes down into this division and
makes it even harder than it was. This season we
have had Leicester, Southampton and Leeds come
down, so the division is even stronger than a couple
of years ago.
You are a Croatian player that has gone away and
played in England and in Germany. Not as many
English players go and play abroad. What sort of
experiences have you gained from playing in a
different country?
It is very interesting. It’s a different culture,
obviously, a different language, a different style of
living. Everything is different. But now, these days,
I think a lot more English players go abroad as well.
Back in the day, it wasn’t like that. I think now, maybe
because Jude Bellingham has been so successful,
maybe more of them now are thinking, ‘I will go
abroad as well.’ It is a big change. Different culture,
different weather, different food, everything’s
different, but this is exciting. I think I settled very
well, very quickly, when I joined here.
Does Birmingham feel like home now, or at least a
second home away from Croatia?
Yes, definitely. It’s five years since I left. Obviously, I
was in Germany for a year but in general, most of my
career is in England, basically. In Croatia, I played
four seasons of senior football. So now here, it
has been four, and one in Germany, so
five abroad. I have played more abroad
than in Croatia.
You had a season in Berlin and by
the time you came back, training
had moved from Wast Hills to the
Birmingham City Elite Performance
and Innovation Centre in Henleyin-Arden.
What did you make of
that change?
The facilities are
unbelievable! I think this is
the standard that we should
have, or we should be trying
to reach. Honestly, we have
everything we need to do our work or
to recover, there is a new pitch as well
which is amazing. It’s a beautiful place.
We cannot ask for anything more than
this to do our work.
Although things have not gone how
we would want on the pitch this
season, the training ground is a
symbol of how things are moving
forward. The Stadium, the dressing rooms, all the
things that are happening around the Club are very
positive.
Exactly, things are improving very quickly. But we
have to get the football right. It’s been a very tough
season. To have four managers, it’s tough to deal
with that. We need to be honest and realistic. It’s not
a normal environment. But it happened, so we have
to get on with it. We don’t want excuses. We need to
carry on and get the results we need. All the things
around us are going in the right direction. But us as a
team, we need to show the same on the pitch.
Gary Rowett has taken charge until the end of the
season. What impact has he made?
We need to try to buy into what he wants in the
time he is here. There are only five games left and
we need to stay in this league. It’s as simple as that.
Hopefully, we will. I think we have enough quality
to do the job. But again, we need to show that on
the pitch. We just try to stick together. The Preston
game was important. It was a day when we had to
get three points, no matter what, and we did that.
Three points, move on to the next game.
You came on at 1-0 in the Preston game and you
seemed the perfect man to screen things and help
make sure of the clean sheet.
For me, if I play one minute or 90, I always do my
best for that period on the pitch. I think that’s how
we all should be. If you’re honest, if you work hard,
eventually, the rewards will come. That’s how I see
the game and that is how I always try to play.
You always bring incredible stamina to a game,
you seem to be able to run and run, however
many games there are. Have you always had that
energy?
I think I always train hard, but I think it comes
naturally as well. Thankfully, I have always had that
during my career.
There has been a great atmosphere at St. Andrew’s
@ Knighthead Park right throughout the season,
but it seems even stronger in these last few
games. To have the Bluenoses right behind you
must be so important at this time of the season?
Of course. Especially the Preston game, I think
it was a fully packed stadium. All the Stadium was
bouncing. That means a lot to us. I know the fans
have had a tough, tough season as well, and a tough
couple of years really. But the Preston game, the
atmosphere was amazing. Hopefully, that will carry
on with three games left at home.
For us, we just need to perform on the pitch, do
the crowd proud, work hard as a unit. I think with
the crowd, with that atmosphere, I think we can
win games, especially at home. That relationship is
always important. If we perform with the desire, I
think the crowd will back us all the way.
Scaling New Heights: Birmingham City
Foundation students take on Snowdon!
Birmingham City Foundation’s First Gen22
Programme launched on Monday 25 March,
taking a group of 25 young people to Wales for
two days of activities and challenges.
The Gen22 Programme, funded by The United by
2022 Legacy Charity, is a free-to-access project
that creates opportunities for young people, aged
16–24, from the West Midlands to gain employabilityboosting
skills and experiences. Birmingham City
Foundation is proud to be delivering the sports
career focused programmes.
The first group of young people took part in a
range of skills workshops, including public speaking,
safeguarding, working with young people, and first
44 | BLUES NEWS BIRMINGHAM CITY V CARDIFF CITY

aid. It is a vital part of the programme to develop
the skills and knowledge of the young people to go
forward, promote best practices, and support and
inspire them to access sport.
When asked about the programme, one
participant, Josh, said: “The Gen22 Programme is
a really good way to get young people involved in
activities they might not normally participate in. It
also gives them the chance to socialise with more
people.”
Day 1 of the two-day trip started with an activity
like no other: heading up to Betws-Y-Coed, everyone
swapped their phones and trainers for helmets
and wetsuits before tackling the Afon Ddu Gorge.
The group waded through the streams, climbed
waterfalls, and even had the opportunity to jump
from the rocks into the plunge pools below. With only
the night to rest, day two brought on an even bigger
challenge for the group.
The group laced up their walking boots and, along
with staff from Birmingham City Foundation, took
social action and hiked 1,085 metres above sea level
to conquer Snowdon. The teamwork displayed by
the group was phenomenal, encouraging everyone
to push forward and reach the summit. They took on
this challenge to raise money for the Foundation and
the brilliant work they do.
Josh added: “Climbing Snowdon is one of the
proudest moments of my life because, before now,
I probably would have never even thought about
climbing it. However, now that I have, I will want to
do it again. It allowed me to distance myself from
everything that was going on in my life, and it was
almost therapeutic in the aspect of not having to
worry about things for a day.”
For the final part of the Gen22 programme, the
group will complete 30 hours of work experience
in a professional sports setting. The young people
have already experienced coaching the Junior Blues
teams and have supported young people to access
the Foundation’s matchday activations before
fixtures at St Andrews @ Knighthead Park. As a team,
they have already completed 315 hours of social
action and work experience.
Other participants have explained how coaching
Junior Blues has been a good experience because
it gave them a chance to develop key life skills that
will help them in the future. The programme was fun
overall and provided a good experience that they can
use for coaching outside of the programme.”
The Foundation’s Community Project Coordinator
said: “On behalf of the Birmingham City Foundation,
a massive thank you and well done to all involved. We
are so proud of the teamwork and enthusiasm you
showed during the programme. You should all be so
proud of what you have achieved.”
IT IS AN HONOUR TO BE A BLUES
CENTURION SAYS JORDAN JAMES
JORDAN JAMES HAS EXPRESSED HIS PRIDE AFTER REACHING
NEW HEIGHTS AS A PROFESSIONAL.
Fresh from taking his tally of Wales caps
into double figures, after facing Finland
and Poland in the first Men’s international
break of 2024, Blues’ midfielder has experienced
another week to remember.
In the space of six days, the 19-year-old made
his 100th appearance wearing royal blue and was
shortlisted for the EFL Championship Young Player
of the Season prize, deserved recognition for his
eight league goals in 38 matches.
Speaking to BluesTV at the Birmingham City
Elite Performance and Innovation Centre, James
discussed both his surprise and delight at the EFL
recognition and what it means to make a century of
appearances for the Club.
“I wasn’t really expecting the nomination, but the
100 appearances was the big one for me. To make
100 appearances for this club is an honour and for
me and my family is a massive achievement. Not
many people are able to do that at my age and to be
able to do that is a great feeling.
“The nominee has come with that and that is a
great achievement. Hopefully, I can win it.”
James also explained how the latest milestones
in his professional journey can be of benefit to both
himself and the Men’s First Team as they look to
finish the 2023/24 league campaign as strongly as
possible.
“It has been a tough season for all of us but these
achievements boost my confidence and they help
you through to the end of the season.
“Hopefully, I can help the team and the Club to
have a good back end of the season.”
MY DREAM FIVE-A-SIDE TEAM
KERYS HARROP
THROUGHOUT THE 2023/24 SEASON, BLUES NEWS IS SETTING THE TASK OF
COMPILING A DREAM FIVE-A-SIDE TEAM – WITH A TWIST!
For each home game, a different team will be published, but these will be subject to
stipulations ensuring it is a proper challenge.
This week, Birmingham City Women’s legend and
BluesTV co-commentator Kerys Harrop has
been called up to pick a team to challenge the
game’s very best. Born in Wordsley, the 2012 Women’s
FA Cup winner has gone with players who, like her, are
some of the West Midlands’ finest footballers.
CHELSEA WESTON
Chels would have to be in there as
she was a tough tackling full-back
(female version of Paul Robinson).
She looked up to him as inspiration,
I think ha! She was a no-nonsense
defender, Wingers didn’t like coming up against her!
Great person to have in the dressing room too, very
funny, and good for the social aspect of the team!
Chelsea would be my rush keeper as she was also a
bit crazy and was actually a decent GK in the smallsided
games we played!
LAURA BASSETT
Bass would be my captain. Great
leader, vocal, and a very good
defender. She knew how to get the
best out of teammates. Her and
Chelsea at the back would be funny
as they look the same. Chels, we used to call mini-Bass!
DARREN CARTER
Had to get Daz in the team as he’s a proper
Bluenose, technically good midfielder and a fellow
lefty like me. Need to balance the
team out with at least one leftfooted
player! He would be on set
pieces scoring all the free kicks
and worldie goals from distance.
JUDE BELLINGHAM
I don’t need to say much about
Jude, do I?! What a player! The
ultimate footballer, he can do
everything! Physically fit and
strong, technically very gifted,
passionate, hard-working but most importantly
humble. The epitome of the ultimate player!
KAREN CARNEY
The Wizard as Blues fans used
to call her, as well as the Queen
of Birmingham. Kaz has to go in
my team, true Bluenose and a
technically gifted player. It would
be a fight between her and Darren about who was
on free kicks. Maybe Kaz could take my team’s
penalties instead. Tricky, speedy winger back in her
heyday who was unplayable at times!
the Club badge and name running
throughout the fabric. All these
features are perfectly replicated on
the new re-releases.
And what a season to recall!
Moments after relegation was confirmed
the previous May, eternal optimist Barry Fry
predicted that Blues would get
100 points and 100 goals
the following season.
He was a tad bullish
on points (Birmingham
City ended up on 89)
but 117 goals across
all competitions and
two trophies more
than made up for
that, with much of
the excitement
coming with
the players
dressed from
top to toe in
red.
Worn 17 times
across the season, it had an
inauspicious first outing with
Blues losing 2-1 in the first
leg of their Coca-Cola Cup tie
at Shrewsbury Town. It was
a different story for its first
League appearance, though,
with a Steve Claridge brace
securing all three points at
Swansea City.
This was the first of 11 victories
in red throughout the season,
which is more than any of the other 68
away or change shirts the club have worn since 1970.
And there were many memorable moments along
the way.
STEVE CLARIDGE CELEBRATES HIS OPENER AT HUDDERSFIELD TOWN.
At Peterborough United, in September, midfielder
Jonathan Hunt became the first Blues player to
score a hat-trick in nearly 10 years. This ended what
was significantly the longest period in the Club’s
history without a ‘treble’ either before or since.
Two months later, Blues drew Isthmian League
side Slough Town in the First Round of the FA Cup.
Originally scheduled to be played in Berkshire, the
Rebels opted to switch the venue but remained the
designated home side. Accordingly, it would be the
first time Blues had worn anything but royal blue at
St. Andrew’s since 1972.
Unquestionably, the most bizarre moment in the
red shirts came at Chester City. A resounding 0-4
win saw the travelling fans in jubilant mood. Skipper,
Liam Daish, joined in the fun by playing a plastic
trumpet which had found its way on to the pitch.
Referee John Brandwood did not see the funny side,
however, and promptly booked Daish, which in turn
triggered a two-match ban!
The best was saved until last, though. On a
sweltering afternoon at Huddersfield Town,
Birmingham knew that victory on the final day would
secure the league title and automatic promotion
but the home side, who had promotion ambitions of
their own, were no pushover.
A tense affair exploded in the last 17 minutes with
goals from Steve Claridge and Paul Tait sending the
4,000 supporters who had travelled into raptures
and ensuring that Blues had bounced back at the
first attempt.
Just 13 days after lifting the Auto Windscreens
Shield at Wembley, the impressive Second Division
trophy would be winding its way to St. Andrew’s too.
And now we get to re-live the moment.
Priced at £45, this beautifully remade
shirt will soon be available from
the Blues Store, both in-person and
online.
Former Player Interview
JONATHAN GROUNDS
Life has come full circle in more ways than
one for Jonathan Grounds. Once a youngster
coming through academy football, he now
coaches the next generation of aspiring footballers,
and he does it here at Birmingham City, back at the
football club where he spent the bulk of his senior
career, amassing 170 games in six years.
As a boy, Grounds was spotted for Middlesbrough’s
Under-9s and went through the ranks, going on to
play for the first team, days he remembers fondly.
“It was special playing for my hometown club. They
were very good at bringing players through, so you
were going into the first team with your mates. I came
through the old reserve system. We were playing in
the reserves against seasoned professionals as well,
whether they wanted to be there or not! I remember
playing against Les Ferdinand, Nicolas Anelka, at the
age of 17, 18. I think that prepared you better for going
into a first-team game.
“As I grew up, I got to a point where, if I wasn’t in the
first-team picture there, where could I go and play?
Being able to play every Saturday after you’ve put all
that effort into training is so important. Even if it was
two loan spells throughout the season, I’d get a loan
up until Christmas where I would get 15 to 20 games
and then a different loan and another 15 or 20 games
from the January. I was getting a minimum of 30
games. You build that resilience and robustness to be
able to play a full season.”
That stood Grounds in good stead when he made
a permanent move to Oldham Athletic in July 2012,
playing just over 100 games there before Blues came
calling two years later.
“Malcolm Crosby was on Lee Clark’s staff here and I’d
worked with Malcolm at Middlesbrough. He asked how
I would feel about joining. It was my first opportunity
to have regular Championship football, so it was a
no-brainer.
“Gary Rowett then replaced Lee in the October and
he quickly identified our strengths and weaknesses.
He didn’t ask us to do anything that we couldn’t.
We had pace at the top end, good defenders and
midfielders who could pass, so counterattacking was
a good way for us to play.”
Grounds was a regular starter under Clark, Rowett,
Gianfranco Zola and then Harry Redknapp after he
J.S. Spooner
took charge at the end of the 2016/17 campaign. Blues
needed to win the last two games of the season to
ensure Championship survival, and the first, at home
to Huddersfield Town, did not start well, as Grounds
recalls.
“We missed a penalty and then Che Adams was
sent off after about 20 minutes and you’re thinking,
‘Oh no!’ One of the big things we worked on was set
pieces. We had lads who could attack the ball. Down
to 10 men, that still gave us possibilities. Just before
half-time, we had a corner and I headed one in – I
didn’t get many, but that was a big goal! We won 2-0
and then beat Bristol City 0-1 to stay up. To keep two
clean sheets in those last two games, as a defender,
that was as big as the goal.
“Weirdly, going down to 10 men in the first game
benefited us because it was, ‘All hands to the pump,
lads!’ At Bristol City, we scored quite early, and it
suited us to play on the counterattack. We had a few
nervy moments - I don’t think they had anything to
play for, but we were leading 1-0 into injury time and
they sent their goalkeeper up! I mean, come on!”
Still very much a fixture in the side, an injury in
February 2018 suddenly derailed Grounds’ Blues
career.
“A month or so before that, I’d just signed a new deal.
I’d been going well, playing consistently for three or
four years. The injury was just unfortunate, a tackle
that opened my knee up. Things went downhill from
there. There was another management change, I
wasn’t fit when Garry Monk came in and I probably
wasn’t his cup of tea. He had his own ideas, he wanted
to bring his own players in. That’s football, and so I
moved on.”
Grounds ended his playing career at Exeter City last
season but was quickly looking to get back on the
grass, this time as a coach.
“I recognised early on that coaching was something
I wanted to go into. Probably from being 30 onwards,
I was writing down sessions that I enjoyed or that I
thought I could change a bit. I probably would have
finished my coaching badges earlier had it not been
for COVID. There was a backlog and that derailed it
a bit.
“I got my A-licence last summer and then got the
opportunity to come back here in an Academy role,
which I’m really enjoying, working across a couple of
age groups, passing on the experience I have. I think
it helps for the players to know that I’ve been in the
position they are, and that I’ve played for this team. I
know what it takes. I do say to a couple of them that
they’ve got a lot more ability than I had, and I managed
to churn out a career!
“Ability is essential, obviously, but you do have to
have more than that. As much as it’s a team sport, you
are an individual within that team. In the end, you’re
on your own out there, in front of 20,000 people.
Teamwork and camaraderie help you along the way,
but first and foremost, if your body can’t deal with the
robustness of playing games, it’s going to be difficult
for you. Then you have to deal with the adversity of
supporters shouting at you, teammates, opposition.
You do need to be really, really strong mentally. Having
the complete package is what gets you a career.”
Crewe Alexandra under-21s
TUESDAY 2 APRIL | PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NORTH | ST. ANDREW’S AT KNIGHTHEAD PARK
Blues Under-21s defeated Crewe Alexandra
in the Professional Development League on
Tuesday evening.
Goals from Romelle Donovan, Junior Dixon and
Laiith Fairnie helped Birmingham City turn a dominant
performance into three points at St. Andrew’s @
Knighthead Park after initially falling behind.
The victory means that Steve Spooner’s side remain
top of the PDL North table, with the development side
in a strong position going into the final five games of
the season.
Blues started much stronger, with midfielder Harley
Hamilton causing the visitors no end of problems.
Within five minutes he had sent a lobbed effort inches
over the bar and forced an excellent save from Crewe’s
goalkeeper.
The Railwaymen then took an unexpected lead
through Max Woodcock. The midfielder took
advantage of the hosts’ light numbers at the back as
he finished past Brad Mayo following a counterattack.
Thankfully, Donovan was on hand to level the scores
just five minutes later. Dixon burst past the visiting
backline before cutting the ball back for the 17-yearold,
who applied a perfect, first-time finish into the
top corner.
Somehow the go-ahead goal evaded Birmingham
before half-time as Hamilton fizzed a dangerous
centre across the face of goal that no one could get
on the end of.
Blues continued to knock on the door in the second
45 and finally took the lead in the 61st minute. Josh
Home robbed a Crewe defender of possession and
when his resulting effort was saved, the ball fell to top
scorer Dixon who comfortably dispatched his 16th of
the campaign from close range.
Donovan was then close to doubling his tally soon
after as he worked the ball onto his left foot and fired a
powerful effort just over the crossbar from 20 yards.
Spooner’s team did eventually give themselves a
two-goal cushion, with Fairnie adding his name to the
scoresheet late on. Home made it two assists for the
evening as his free kick from the edge of the 18-yard
box found the centre-back who confidently powered
his header into the corner.
Speaking to BCFC.com post-match, Under-21s Head
Coach, Spooner, said he was delighted with the three
points and looked forward to the remaining fixtures.
“It is really pleasing to see the boys come back from
behind to win. I was not too worried when they scored
as I thought we were knocking the ball around well and
would eventually put the goals in, which we did.
“Second-half was a better performance, the balls
into the box found their targets and we did enough
to add those two goals. I am really pleased for Junior
Dixon getting back on the scoresheet, too.
“We have five games left, I think the other teams
below us have one or two games in hand over us but all
we can do is continue to go out there and win the ones
we have left.”
The Under-21s also visited Colchester United at
Maldon Stadium on Monday 8 April. Find out how they
THURSDAY 28 MARCH | PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NORTH | BARNSLEY TRAINING COMPLEX
Blues Under-18s defeated Barnsley in the
Professional Development League on the
final Thursday of March.
Birmingham City emerged victorious for the
eighth consecutive game as they bested the Tykes,
who came into the game second in the PDL North
to Martyn Olorenshaw’s table-topping side.
Frontman, Frank Tattum, scored both goals in the
first-half as the high-flying Blues extended their
lead at the summit to a whopping 20 points with six
games to play.
A quick start at the Barnsley Training Complex led
to the opening goal just 11 minutes in, with Tattum
applying a brilliant, outside-of-the-foot finish into
the top corner following Alvaro Ruiz Rente’s cross.
The forward doubled both his and Birmingham’s
onto a cutting through ball from Cameron Eubank
to beat the goalkeeper.
The second-half saw much more of a scrappy
affair and, although Martyn Olorenshaw’s side
continued to dictate much of the tempo, they failed
to create any more clear-cut opportunities.
A goal from a corner for the hosts threatened to
inspire a late comeback, but Blues stood resolute
and saw the game out for another important three
points.
Speaking to BCFC.com post-match, Under-18s
Lead Coach, Olorenshaw, said he was delighted
that his side could take maximum points on the
road against a good Barnsley outfit.
“It is a massive result for us given they are our
closest rivals in the table. Everyone went into it
knowing how big a game it was, so I was over the
moon that we came away with the win.
“I thought first-half we were excellent, we took
control, nullified their threat and scored two really
good goals. The second half was a bit more scrappy
but we dug in and ground out the result. A big day
for us all round.”
The Under-18s were also in action against
Coventry City at The Knighthead Training and
Academy Grounds last Thursday. Find out how they
