The ProgRAMme
FROM THE BOSS
PAUL WARNE
DERBY COUNTY’S HEAD COACH PAUL WARNE PROVIDES HIS
PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS IN HIS REGULAR COLUMN IN THE RAM.
We have had another busy
week as the closing stages
of the season firmly come
into sight and just three
games remain in our league
programme. The matches
carry the same significance
as they have done all season,
with three points on offer,
but it is just now that the
margin for error is getting
smaller by the week.
I’ve had a few people in
the media talking to me
about the word pressure
in recent weeks. As I have
said to the group, pressure
is a privilege. They have
worked incredibly hard to get
themselves in the position we
find ourselves right now, so
they shouldn’t be feeling any
more pressure than normal.
Their efforts have got us to
the position where everyone
associated with Derby County
has a buzz about them, so
they know what they need to
do over the next fortnight to
get to where we want to be.
We’re back at at home today
following successive away
fixtures in the last fortnight.
After claiming a 1-0 win
over Blackpool here at Pride
Park on Easter Friday, we’ve
travelled to both Portsmouth
and Wycombe Wanderers as
4
the games continue to tick
down at a rapid rate.
We recorded a point in a
very entertaining 2-2 draw
at Portsmouth and, despite
not winning the game, there
were so many positives to
build on. I was proud of the
performance, and I thought
the lads were excellent. If
we were losing 2-1 and got
a draw, we’d have been
buzzing. However, when
you’re winning 2-1 and feel
like the game is just running
out of steam, it is different.
I felt we’d ridden the storm
but unfortunately it wasn’t to
be. It doesn’t take anything
away from how much effort
the lads put in, though.
It says a lot about the
players’ display that it felt
like Portsmouth had got to
a stage where they’d ran out
of ideas, while we always
looked dangerous on the
counterattack. I had nothing
but pride and that point
could be massive in a
fortnight’s time.
The same can be said in
terms of the point being big
in the long run from the 0-0
draw at Wycombe Wanderers
on Wednesday night. It
was a frustrating evening
for us because we had the

The ProgRAMme
chances to pick up all three
points, but it wasn’t to be. As
disappointed as we were at the
end, we must move on quickly
and look to get back on the
winning trail this afternoon.
Today we host a Leyton
Orient side that are looking
to round off their own
campaign in a positive
manner. After stepping up to
League One last summer, as
a result of being League Two
champions last term, they’ve
had a strong year under
Richie Wellens.
They’ve picked up some
impressive wins over the
season, including being one
of just a handful of sides to
have defeated Portsmouth
after winning 3-0 at Fratton
Park in January. They have
also registered notable
successes at both Stevenage
and Oxford United, so those
results should serve as a
reminder for what they’re
capable of.
We were 3-0 victors at
Orient back in December,
although they certainly gave
us a few scares along the
way. It wasn’t as convincing
as the scoreline suggested
and it was a day where we
worked hard to ensure the
key moments fell on our
side. We’ll need more of
the same today if we’re to
achieve a positive result
against a good side.
We are set to welcome
another crowd in excess of
30,000 this afternoon and all I
would ask is that you continue
to get right behind the
players. The atmosphere has
been electric in recent weeks,
both here at Pride Park and
on the road, and we need
more of the same for our next
few fixtures. It really does
make a massive difference to
the players so I would urge
you to give them everything
you’ve got because, when
we’re all pushing in the same
direction, it can be a very
powerful force.
Enjoy today’s game.
The ProgRAMme
The Rams played out a goalless draw at
Wycombe Wanderers on Wednesday evening as
they edged two points clear of Bolton Wanderers
in the table with three matches remaining,
although the Trotters do have a game in hand.
Corey Blackett-Taylor and Nathaniel Mendez-
Laing had Derby’s best chances in the first half
at Adams Park. There was plenty of effort and
endeavour throughout but Derby were unable to
get the goal they wanted to pick up a victory.
The ProgRAMme
The Rams returned to winning
ways on Good Friday thanks to
a 1-0 victory over Blackpool at
Pride Park Stadium. A fantastic
strike from on-loan Cardiff
City midfielder Ebou Adams
towards the back end of the
first-half was enough to seal
all three points and record a
fourth consecutive home win.
CATCH UP ON ALL THE LATEST NEWS
COMING OUT OF PRIDE PARK
over the years. Being able to
help young grassroots teams
is a privilege and we’ve seen
first-hand the impact having
a professional kit has on the
players. We can’t wait to see
the nominations come in this
year and look forward to seeing
the winners presented with
their kits at Pride Park!”
The winning teams will be invited
to Pride Park Stadium for a tour
along with the official unveiling of
their brand-new kit, which will be
sponsored and provided by Eden
Tyres & Servicing.
If you have a team in mind,
we want to hear from you. To
KIT 4 KIDS IS BACK FOR 2024 – STILL TIME TO ENTER!
We have once again teamed up
with proud partner Eden Tyres
& Servicing for the 2023/24
season to run a fantastic
incentive for local children’s
football teams.
‘Kit 4 Kids’ gives local junior
football teams, between the
ages of Under-7s to Under-12s,
in Derbyshire the opportunity to
be nominated to win a brandnew
football kit.
There might be various reasons
to nominate a team and, as
always, each nomination will be
closely considered.
After the success of recent
campaigns, we have decided
that, once again, there will be
TWO winning teams that will
get the opportunity to visit
Pride Park Stadium and be
presented with their brandnew
kits ahead of their 2024/25
season!
Last year’s winners
Swadlincote Girls FC Under-8s
and Stockbrook Colts Rams
Under-7s were surprised
by Men’s First Team striker
Martyn Waghorn and Women’s
First Team Club Captain
Hannah Ward, as they were
being presented with their new
football kits for the first time.
Matt Eden, Managing Director
of Eden Tyres & Servicing, said:
“Kit 4 Kids is a campaign we
look forward to every year. As
a business that began life in
Derby, and as lifelong Derby
County supporters, we’re firm
believers in giving back to the
community that’s supported us
INTRODUCING LEYTON ORIENT, AKA:
The O’s
ALL BUT THE MOST OPTIMISTIC OF LEYTON ORIENT
SUPPORTERS HAD PROBABLY ACCEPTED THAT THE PLAY-OFFS
WERE OUT OF REACH BEFORE THE O’S TOOK ON EXETER CITY AT
HOME ON TUESDAY EVENING.
A
nd now, after two goals in
the closing moments of the
match allowed the Grecians to
snatch a draw, even that band
of positive thinkers will be
looking forward to going again
in League One next term. Eight
points outside of the play-off
places with three games to
play, and with sixth-placed
Oxford United still to face
seventh-placed Lincoln City, it
would need a near impossible
mathematical miracle to
conjure up a place in the postseason
promotion shoot-out
from here.
But that is not to say that the
London club have nothing
to play for as they face the
Rams, Fleetwood Town and
Shrewsbury Town over the
next couple of weeks. Richie
Wellens’ impressive side will
be looking to secure their
place in the upper reaches
of League One and making
sure that the club’s highest
placed league finish of the last
decade is a top ten spot.
It was in the 2013/14 season
that Orient came within a
penalty shoot-out at Wembley
of securing a place in the
Championship and a return to
tier two of the English football
pyramid for the first time
since the 1980s. Rotherham
United took the play-off spoils
that year and, within three
years, the O’s had slipped out
of the Football League.
Two seasons outside of the
EFL ended with the National
League title in 2018/19 and
that was followed with the
League Two crown last season.
This campaign has seen the
club around upper mid-table
for virtually the whole year,
though never quite breaking
into the top six. At the end of
February, after a start to the
calendar year that included
eight wins from 11 league
games, the O’s were only five
points outside of the playoffs,
but that trajectory has
dropped off during the last
few weeks as injuries have
taken a toll.
However, away from home
they have remained strong and
have picked up notable results
on the road, not least their 3-0
win at Portsmouth in January;
2-1 win at Oxford in February
and 1-0 victory at Stevenage
last month.
Following his retirement from playing after
a career spanning almost 700 midfield
appearances, Richie Wellens became a first team
coach at Oldham Athletic, and less than three
months later, was placed in caretaker charge.
After impressing in his temporary role,
Wellens was given a two-year contract in
October 2017. However, he was relieved of his
duties in June 2018.
Following the disappointing end to his tenure in
Greater Manchester, Wellens looked to bounce
back immediately at Swindon Town, where he
was confirmed as Head Coach in November
2018. In his first season at the County Ground,
he guided the Robins to a 13th place finish,
a five-place improvement from when he took
the team over. The following season, Wellens
guided them back to League One. The Wiltshire
club won the title early due to the Covid-19
pandemic curtailing the season.
After nine games of the 2020/21 League One
campaign, Wellens left Swindon for Salford
City. During his time there he oversaw
EFL Trophy success, as Salford overcame
Portsmouth. However, a poor run of league
results saw him leave the Peninsula Stadium
after just over four months in charge.
Another short stint followed with Doncaster
Rovers before Wellens was appointed as Head
Coach at Leyton Orient in March 2022 and,
at the time of his appointment, the O’s were
sitting in 20th position. An unbeaten start to
the 2022/23 season saw Wellens win the EFL
League Two Manager of the Month award for
August, his side sitting top of the league with
the most goals scored and fewest conceded. A
100% record across September saw him win
the award for the second consecutive month,
with promotion achieved on 18th April.
This season, having guided the club to ten points
from four matches, including successive wins
over the top two, Wellens was awarded the EFL
League One Manager of the Month award for
January 2024.
Goalkeeper Solomon
Brynn, who joined
the Middlesbrough
nine, has progressed
through the ranks and
is held in high regard
at his parent club. He
is currently enjoying
a season on loan with
Orient, his fourth
temporary move from
the Riverside Stadium
and at the highest level
so far. Following a first
loan to Darlington,
Brynn joined Scottish
side Queen of the
South at the start of
the 2021/22 season,
but it was the following
2022/23 season when
Brynn made a real
name for himself with a
successful season-long
stint with Swindon Town
in Sky Bet League Two.
He was ever-present
for the Robins and was
named the club’s Player
of the Season after
he led the division for
saves made with 136.
Full-back Tom James
came through the
academy at Cardiff City,
where he made his
debut in the Premier
League, before making
the move to Yeovil
Town. He made 78
appearances for the
Glovers and attracted
interest of clubs higher
up the English pyramid,
before opting to join
Hibernian. Loans to
Wigan and Salford
City followed before
he joined Orient in
2021. Orient Head
Coach, Richie Wellens,
admitted that he is a
big fan of the mercurial
Welsh defender, after
admitting trying to sign
him twice already in his
career. To the delight
of Orient supporters,
James signed a new
two-year deal at the
club in May 2022.
The former Derby youth
teamer joined Orient
on a free transfer in
January 2022 having
made four first team
appearances for
the Rams. He was a
mainstay in Derby’s
title-winning Under-
18s side from the
2018/19 season, before
progressing into the
Under-23s. Brown
made his debut for the
O’s on 25th January
2022, playing the full
90 minutes in a defeat
to Newport County. As
the 2021/22 season
drew to a close, he
stamped his authority
in the Orient midfield,
including scoring
his first professional
goal in a 4-2 defeat to
Northampton Town.
Brown signed a new
two-year deal in the
summer of 2023,
keeping his future in
East London.
The tenacious forward
with an eye for goal was
developed in Orient’s
youth system and made
his first team debut
at the age of 17 when
the club was still in
the National League.
Sotiriou has had several
loan spells away from
E10 since then but has
now firmly secured his
place in the first team
squad. Following the
departure of Kenny
Jackett, Sotiriou was
given a run of starts in
the side, firstly, under
Matt Harrold’s interim
guidance, and then
under current Head
Coach Richie Wellens.
He signed a new twoyear
deal following
the conclusion of the
2022/23 season and
has shone this season
with 11 goals and five
assists.
LAST TIME WE MET:
THE O’S 0-3 RAMS
9TH DECEMBER 2023 - SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
DERBY MADE IT FIVE LEAGUE ONE WINS IN A ROW AS THEY
CRUISED TO VICTORY AWAY AGAINST 10-MAN LEYTON ORIENT
WHEN THE SIDES MET AT BRISBANE ROAD’S GAUGHAN GROUP
STADIUM IN DECEMBER.
Louie Sibley scored in
the first half before O’s
defender Brandon Cooper
was dismissed late in the
first half, before Nathaniel
Mendez-Laing and Tom
Barkhuizen added one apiece
in the second period.
Playing with energy and
enthusiasm, the Rams had
failed to capitalise on a couple
of excellent chances before
they took the lead after 34
minutes through Sibley.
He collected a pass and bore
down unchallenged on goal
before delivering a sublime drive
from distance that nestled low
into the bottom corner of the net.
And Orient’s misery was
compounded nine minutes
later when Cooper was sent
off by referee David Rock after
elbowing James Collins as
the pair clashed just near the
halfway line.
Derby doubled their lead two
minutes into the second half
when skipper Conor Hourihane
picked out the unmarked
Mendez-Laing, who had the
simplest of chances to net his
sixth goal of the campaign.
Totally in control, the visitors
added to their tally when
Mendez-Laing fed substitute
Barkhuizen a simple
opportunity after the pair had
broken out quickly following an
Orient corner.
Head Coach Paul Warne
was understandably happy
with the afternoon’s outcome
but still wanted more from the
team, telling RamsTV after
the game: “We had no massive
issues, but I do think we could
have played better in various
parts of the game.
“We rode our luck in the first
10 minutes or so, but you need
a bit of that to win games.
After that, I thought we were
handsome for the win.
“We’ll still learn from it and we
still need to get better because
that level of performance, I
don’t think, is enough.”
‘DWIGHT GAYLE WILL ALWAYS SCORE GOALS’ IS THE CHANT
THAT DERBY COUNTY FANS HAVE FOR STRIKER DWIGHT
GAYLE - AND IT DIDN’T TAKE LONG FOR IT TO START
ECHOING AROUND THE STANDS.
The experienced frontman, who joined Paul
Warne’s squad on a short-term deal until
the end of the campaign in February, bagged
his first goal in a Rams shirt in the 3-0 home
victory over Port Vale in early March with a
fine header.
That was the first of three goals in as many
games which not only delighted Derby fans,
but also saw a beaming smile return to
Gayle’s face after what he admits had been
two difficult years for him personally.
20
He’s loving life with the Rams and whilst
the recent injury setback with a hamstring
problem has left him frustrated, he hasn’t
let that outweigh what has been an enjoyable
start to life in Derbyshire.
The Ram caught up with Gayle to talk about
his start to life at Pride Park, the favourite
goal he’s scored in his career, and where a
potentially successful end to this campaign
would rank for him among his many
accolades.

Q: First of all, Dwight, what have you made to
the start of your life here at Derby County?
A: It would have been nice to get a couple of
better results at the start of my time here
and, of course, I wouldn’t have picked up this
little injury that has kept me out for a few
games now. I’ve found in my career that I’ve
never really won on my debut or scored on my
debut either, so it was frustrating to not get
positive results against Barnsley and Charlton
but, after that, things picked up for both me
personally and the team as a collective. It’s
been frustrating not to be involved for the last
few matches, but it’s just made me even more
determined to get back out there.
Q: Were you aware after scoring your
first goal for Derby against Port Vale that you
have now scored in every single league from
Sky Bet League Two all the way up to the
Premier League?
A: Yes, I was aware to be honest. It’s a great
achievement and when it got brought up, it
was also mentioned that I’ve scored in both
domestic cup competitions I’ve played in as
well, so I’ve literally scored in everything
at a professional level and that’s a great
achievement and something I’m really pleased
with. I’m sure there will be others, people like
Glenn Murray who worked his way up and I’ve
played with as well. It was a nice achievement
23

THE PROGRAMME
but ultimately my main goal is to hopefully get
another accolade in terms of promotion at the
end of this season with the club.
Q: You’ve also settled in well off the pitch
with the lads. Is there anyone in particular
you feel you’ve clicked with?
A: I wouldn’t say anyone in particular, it’s just
a really good group here. Paul Warne and his
staff have done so well with the recruitment in
terms of the people they have brought together
and throughout the season with little things
they have done to make them gel. Everyone
feels like they are doing it for each other and
that’s a brilliant group dynamic to have.
Q: When you were initially brought to the club
in February you were the only fit striker on
the books, did that bring a pressure for you to
hit the ground running?
A: I always feel pressure with my performances.
I’m very critical with what I do and I never want
24
to let the team down. Ultimately, the lads had
got themselves into a great position before I
came here and I was brought in to help continue
and further that, so that was the pressure I sort
of put on myself.
Q: You mentioned in an interview after joining
that you’d got a smile back on your face
playing football. Can you go into that a little
more and just explain the difficulties of the
last couple of years for you?
A: It’s really difficult to explain in terms of the
one or two things made it that way, but you
start to doubt yourself and what you’re capable
of. I don’t know really; it’s obvious things didn’t
go too well for me at Stoke City and since
joining Derby, I’ve been able to gain a massive
amount of confidence back. I was looking for
any excuse as to why I wasn’t able to perform
at my previous levels and stuff like that. For
me, I’ve always loved football, I’ve always
played football and to then start doubting that

THE The PROGRAMME ProgRAMme
you’re able to do it any more and you’re not
capable of scoring goals, which is my favourite
thing to do, that’s very upsetting.
Q: Was not scoring goals, which you’ve
always done throughout your career, the
biggest mental challenge for you?
A: Yes, definitely. I tried to adapt my game
to try and help the team in other ways but
ultimately it took a massive dent in my mental
strength in terms of being able to be happy
after results and things like that. That was
new for me. I was able to deal with it to an
extent, I just had to get my head around
that my future wasn’t perhaps being the
goalscorer I was, but maybe I could bring
something else to the team.
Q: Let’s talk about goals from a positive
perspective then. Do you have any that live
long in the memory?
A: The one I got against Liverpool in 2014
whilst I was at Crystal Palace is one that was
really key for me and my career. It’s probably
why I’m most known due to the stature of the
game and how important it was for them, so it
lives long in their memory too. I have a lot of
Liverpool fans that come up to me and ask me
about that still to this day!
Q: What about types of goals you like to
score, is there a favourite?
A: I spoke about this with the boys in the
changing room and it’s the scrappy ones for me
like at Bristol Rovers away where I scored from
a few yards out. Scoring via a deflection or a
tap-in still means you can run off celebrating
like you’ve scored an absolute world class
strike! They are my favourite because you’re
buzzing you’ve scored, but you’re also buzzing
that you’ve been so fortunate that you’ve just
grabbed yourself an easy goal and haven’t had
to work too hard for it.
Q: You were on the pitch against Reading at
home when the side were awarded a penalty
and many thought you would be stepping up.
How come you didn’t take it?
A: We have a picture on the wall of who takes
the penalties and Conor Hourihane was at the
top. He missed a chance around five minutes
beforehand and he was really upset with
himself and I remember running over to him
and tapping him on the back. I told him not to
worry about it and I said to him that he was
going to score the winner. That turned out to
be exactly right because as soon as we got
that penalty, I knew he was going to score.
There was never any doubt.
Q: Finally, if the team were to get the job
done this year, where would it rank for you
across all of your achievements to date?
A: If I’m being honest, I think it would be up
there with one of my highest in terms of what
it would mean to me. I haven’t been able to
experience celebrating with my family and
my young kids so it would be really nice for
me to do that with them at an age where
they remember it. I also think that after the
difficulties that I’ve experienced over the last
two years, it will also be like a comeback and
a realisation that I am a good player. That
would be huge and really mean a lot to me, as
well as for Derby County.
IT’S A
RAM WORLD!
THIS SEASON WE HAVE BEEN
LOOKING AT RAMS FROM AROUND
THE WORLD BUT AS WE BRING
THIS FEATURE TO A CLOSE, OVER
THE NEXT FEW EDITIONS WE ARE
CHANGING CRITERIA A LITTLE
AND FOCUSSING ATTENTION
CLOSER TO HOME WITH A LOOK AT
SIGNIFICANT WELSH, SCOTTISH
AND IRISH PLAYERS. TODAY THE
SPOTLIGHT FALLS ON IRELAND…
JAMIE WARD
(2011-2015)
Representing Northern Ireland
with distinction, Jamie Ward was
born in Birmingham but qualified for
an international call-up through his
grandfather.
He made two appearances for the Northern
Ireland Under-18 team while an apprentice
with Aston Villa, and won seven Under-21
caps while with Torquay United and
Chesterfield but his full international
career was kick-started through the four
years he spent as Ram.
He joined the club from Sheffield United
in early 2011, initially on loan, and then on
a permanent deal. In total he played 149
games for the club and scored 34 goals
before electing to leave at the end of his
contract in the summer of 2015.
Somewhat surprisingly – given that he
played an active role in stoking local
rivalries during his time as a Ram – he
signed for Nottingham Forest but scored
only three league goals for them during his
four years on their books.
Steps down through the football pyramid
followed and last season he played for Ilkeston
Town in the Northern Premier League before
being named the club’s manager, though he
left that post in the summer.
LEE CARSLEY
(1994-1999)
Anyone who has heard Lee Carsley speak
will know that he wasn’t brought up on the
Emerald Isle – his accent gives away his
Brummie roots.
Carsley qualified for the Republic
of Ireland national team through
his grandmother, who is
from Dunmanway, County Cork and he
would grace the green shirt 40 times in
a distinguished international career that
included the 2002 World Cup finals.
By the time he travelled out to Japan and
South Korea, the defensive midfielder
had left the Rams and was with Everton,
having played for Coventry City and
Blackburn Rovers in between.
Having developed in the Baseball
Ground youth teams, Carsley made his
debut in a 6–1 Anglo-Italian Cup group
stage victory over Cesena in 1994
when aged 20. He went on to become
a regular fixture in the team during
the 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons, making
37 appearances and scoring two goals in
the latter campaign to help the Rams to
a second-place finish and promotion to
the Premiership.
Carsley made 30 appearances during his
first season in the top-flight as the club
consolidated its position with a 12th-place
finish and he remained at Pride Park until
March 1999 when a move to Ewood Park
materialised. He departed Derby having
made 166 appearances and scored five
goals for the club.
Later in his career he would play for
his boyhood favourites Birmingham City
before moving into coaching where he
has specialised in working with younger
players. He is currently the England
Under-21 Head Coach.
GERRY DALY
(1977-1980)
It’s hard to imagine these days but,
in the 1970s, Manchester United
spent time in the second division after
their 1974 relegation from the Football
League’s top tier.
Part of the Red Devils’ team that created
history by finishing 21st out of 22 Division
One teams – and in the team that bounced
straight back as champions – was Gerry
Daly. The Dublin-born midfielder went
on to play almost 150 games for United,
including in the 1976 FA Cup Final, before
making a somewhat surprising £175,000
switch to the Baseball Ground midway
through the 1976/77 campaign.
He had been signed at Old Trafford from
Bohemians in Ireland by Tommy Docherty
and although Daly had been brought
to Derby by Colin Murphy, he was soon
reunited with ‘The Doc’ when he became
Rams manager in September 1977. It was
suggested at the time that the two men did
not get on, and their poor relationship was
part of the reason for Daly leaving United
in the first place, but the classy midfielder
outlasted his outspoken boss in Derby
colours.
The late 1970s were not a particularly
great vintage for Derby County and
ended with relegation during the 1979/80
campaign, which was Daly’s last one at the
Baseball Ground. However, in his first two
full seasons as a Ram, he was the team’s
top scorer and finished his Derby career
with 34 goals from 122 appearances – not
bad for a midfielder.
During his time as a Derby player, he
also spent two summer loans with New
England Tea Men in the North American
Soccer League and, after he left the
Baseball Ground in 1980 to join Coventry
City, he played on for another decade as he
dropped through the divisions.
He finished his career with Conference
side Telford United, the club he was named
as manager of between 1990 and 1993.
Sky Bet League One’s top two clubs
played out an entertaining 2-2 draw
under the lights at Fratton Park to
kick off April. A brace from Joe Ward
twice put the Rams in the lead on the
night but Paul Warne’s men were
pegged back on both occasions, first
by Abu Kamara and later by substitute
Owen Moxon as Portsmouth claimed
a share of the points.
EWES BUILD UP
LEAGUE FINAL WITH
FOREST DRAW
Derby County Women
continued their preparations
for next weekend’s National
League Plate Final against
Cambridge United by grinding
out a hard-earned point in
a 1-1 draw at home to local
rivals Nottingham Forest
Women at Pride Park Stadium
on Easter Sunday.
Before a crowd of just
over 2,000 supporters,
Derby took the lead shortly
after half-time through
midfielder Becky May’s close
range finish.
Forest hit back to level
midway through the second
half when a right-wing cross
was unfortunately diverted
into her own net by rightback
Camille Jenkins.
Derby goalkeeper Sarah
Morgan had to be at her best
to keep the Reds at bay late
on as the Ewes ground out a
point with a determined and
hardworking display.
Derby’s next league fixture
will see them head to Halifax
FC tomorrow (Sunday 14th
April, 2pm kick-off), before
visiting to the home of FC
United of Manchester for the
showpiece final against the
U’s seven days later.
“PLENTY OF POSITIVES
FOR US” - JOYCE
Midfielder Emily Joyce felt there
were plenty of positives to take
away from the Ewes’ showing
with the Reds.
Joyce, who was combative as
ever in the middle of the park,
admitted Forest’s quality provided
the side with one of their sternest
tests of the season.
On reflection, Joyce viewed the
point recorded against their
local rivals as a positive one
to add to the three the Ewes
picked up at the City Ground
earlier in the season.
She said: “Forest came out
strongly early on and we had to
weather the storm to start with.
“We had some chances after
that, but we couldn’t hit the
target. We then managed to get
ahead just after half-time with a
great team goal and, in the end,
it is just a shame we conceded
the equaliser as we did.
“You have to hold your hands
up sometimes and admit you’ve
come up against a great team,
which we did in Forest.
“We are, probably, happy to
come away with a point and we
can take a lot of positives from
this. It is a good point and we
tried to play our way, which is
encouraging.”
She added: “It is always great
to play at Pride Park. As a
Derby fan myself, and there
are a few others in the squad
too, it is always a fixture to look
forward to.”
36
“I AM HAPPY WITH A
POINT” - GRIFFITHS
Manager Sam Griffiths admitted
she was happy to see her side
come away with a point for their
efforts against Forest.
Griffiths was pleased to see the
Ewes dig deep as a team to ride
strong spells of Forest pressure
and pick up a draw against the
promotion chasers.
Overall, she was of the view
that her side’s heart, passion
and desire, alongside their
workrate, secured the hardearned
point.
She said: “We had to ride some
spells of pressure in both
halves, but we still had our
moments as well. Am I happy
with a point? Absolutely. We’ll
take the point and move on.
“There’s no hiding that Forest
probably won the second half in
terms of possession, shots and
everything else, but we knew
we’d have to get through tough
periods in the match.
“We knew we would be up
against it and facing one of the
best footballing sides in the
league. What I wanted to see
was heart, passion and desire.
What got us over the line was
working so hard as a team.”
She added: “We have some very
tired legs in the dressing room.
We knew that would be the case
because we had the privilege of
playing at Pride Park.”

“WE’LL TAKE THE DRAW”
- MORGAN
Sarah Morgan felt the entire
Ewes’ team, from back to front,
stepped up to the plate to grind
out a draw.
Long-serving goalkeeper
Morgan, who has acted as
back-up for most of the season,
has been in the side in recent
weeks owing to Anna Draper
being sidelined due to injury.
She produced a fine display
to keep Forest at bay, making
excellent saves in either half,
and she thoroughly enjoyed
playing her part in the side
picking up a point against their
local rivals.
She said: “I thought we were
superb. Everyone had to bring
their ‘A Game’ and we’ve managed
to get a draw against a really good
Forest team by doing that.
“Obviously we’d have liked to
have won the game, but we’ll
take the draw. The own goal
was unfortunate, but I thought
we were excellent in terms of
how we performed.
“We’ve got some big games
coming up, including the
National League Plate Final in
a few weeks, but for the time
being we are just looking at the
next league game.”
On her performance,
she added: “I’ve had to have
a few games to get used to
be back playing again. I felt
like today, especially with the
occasion and playing at Pride
Park, it was a chance for me to
show Sam and the staff I can
still play and want to play with
a Ram on my shirt.
“It was great to make quite a
few saves, especially here at
Pride Park.”
IN THE COMMUNITY
DERBY COUNTY COMMUNITY TRUST CONTINUES TO MAKE A HUGE
IMPACT IN THE LOCAL AREA AND THE RAM WILL FOCUS ON THEIR
INCREDIBLE EFFORTS OVER THE COURSE OF THE SEASON.
FEMALE TALENT
PATHWAY TO LAUNCH
NEW ELITE PROGRAMME
FOR 16-21 YEAR OLDS
Ahead of the 2024/25
season, Derby County will be
launching an Elite Women’s
16s-21s programme.
Ahead of the current season
a collaboration between the
Derby County Community
Trust’s Regional Talent Centre
teams and the Derby County
Women’s Grassroots Academy
established the Female
Talent Pathway.
Now nearing the end of its
first full season, its success
has been immediately clear.
Many of the age groups
are vying for their league
positions, the Under-18s have
reached a National Final and
the Under-20s have recorded
an unbeaten run of games and
a County Cup Final position.
One of the ultimate aims of
the pathway is to provide
future first team players, and
five younger players have
made their debuts throughout
the season.
The new elite programme will
build on this success, offering
a full-time model for 16 to 21
year olds to train and study with
Derby County Community Trust.
Players will be able to study
full time, studying A Levels or
a Level 3 qualification in Sport
and progress onto higher
education and study a degree,
alongside continuing their
playing journey.
Players will train four times
a week, have access to four
strength and conditioning
gym sessions per week, along
with analysis sessions and the
chance to train alongside the
Women’s first team.
Michael Noon, Female Talent
Pathway Academy Manager,
said: “The Female Talent
Pathway will have been in
place for one full season
The ProgRAMme
by the close of the 2023/24
campaign with a smooth
transition of all youth female
football at Derby County into
one pathway.
“We are now in a position
where the best local talent
is in one pathway. However,
there is currently a large gap
between the Under-18s and
Under-20s players and the
first team.
“The aim is to be able
to use the pathway teams
to support all first team
player recruitment, so to
bridge the gap between the
Under-18s and Under-20s
and the first team, our youth
players require additional
pitch time, specific strength
and conditioning programmes,
analysis sessions and a
more competitive fixture
programme.
“This approach would raise
the bar within the older
talent pathway age groups,
placing the players within a
full-time programme which
would further support their
development as players,
without compromising their
education.”
The Elite Programme would
see the current Under-20s
be changed to an Under -21s
squad, to both mirror the
male Academy set-up and
provide more competitive
opportunities for the team.
It would also enable first
team a hybrid training plan,
whereby they could access
an additional three training
sessions per week, alongside
training with the first team.
Eve Shepherd, who is currently
part of the Community Trust’s
Football and Education
programme, alongside playing
for the Under-18s and more
recently, the first team, added
her thoughts on studying
and playing.
She said: “Being able to
continue to study while upping
my training and game time
has been great. It’s important
for me to have my education,
I have a really keen interest
in coaching, and being part
of this pathway allows me to
carry on gaining qualifications
while training and playing
several times a week.
“I’d only ever been involved
in grassroots football up until
this season, and the staff
recommended that I trial
for the Under-18s when the
Female Talent Pathway was
launched last summer.
“Since then, I’ve continued
to study with the Community
Trust, train after lessons,
play for the Football and
Education team in the week
then for the Under-18s on a
Saturday, and then if I’m lucky,
get asked to feature for the
first team on a Sunday.”
The extension builds on the
successes of the Under-18s
and Under-20s squads this
season, who have both won
their respective leagues, and
are heading to national and
regional cup finals.
Programme, please head to
League One Player of the
Season Award.
The 31-year-old, who can play
a variety of attacking positions,
has been shortlisted for the
award by the EFL after a
superb campaign to date for
Head Coach Paul Warne’s side.
Mendez-Laing has weighed
in with an impressive return
50
of eight goals and 16 assists
in League One this season,
alongside a further goal and two
more assists in cup competitions.
That has taken his total up
to nine goals and 18 assists
from 46 appearances in all
competitions in a black and
white shirt this term.
Mendez-Laing has also worn
the captain’s armband on a
handful of occasions in recent
influence and leadership skills.
The Guatemala international
signed a new deal until
significantly this season.
He made 51 appearances,
more appearances for the club
than any other in his career.
Mendez-Laing is up against
Marlon Pack of Portsmouth
Harrison Burrows for the
League One Player of the
Season Award, which is
sponsored by Sky Bet.
The winners will be announced
to claim the accolade, which
is sponsored by the League
Tom King of Cheltenham
He has currently netted nine
goals in 15 appearances
in all competitions for
