GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO THE MKM STADIUM
FOR TODAY’S SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH AGAINST
QUEENS PARK RANGERS.
Middlesbrough was the same story as many of
our matches this season. We responded well to an
early setback and enjoyed complete dominance
for 95% of the game. I was proud of so much of
our play – the intensity, the pressing, the technical
ability, playing in a style I’ve always wanted to see
in a team. Having fought back to lead, we were
in total control but we didn’t take advantage and
their second goal summed up what we still need to
learn. At this stage of the season, we need to turn
potential into results.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to Queens
Park Rangers head coach Martí Cifuentes, his
staff, players and their fans to today’s game. Martí
is an outstanding coach who has done a great job
after coming in at a difficult time. There has been a
definite improvement and he’s altered their playing
style to one that suits their technical players, the
likes of Ilias Chair and Chris Willock, and they are
defending well. It’s going to be another difficult
tactical game, but one we know we have to win, and
can win if we perform to our level.
This isn’t over; we still have a chance of achieving
our goal if we play consistently to that level. We
are fully focused on the immediate job at hand and
that’s winning this game.
Stay with us. You were unbelievable against
Middlesbrough; the atmosphere inside the stadium
was incredible. It’s frustrating when we don’t get
the results we want or feel we deserve, but we are
onto a good thing. We have accelerated our process
so quickly and there is a real feelgood factor at the
club. We have to keep believing, keep fighting. If we
stick together, and play like we know we can, you
never know where that might take us.
We are all in this together.
At the time of print, the Under-21s were unbeaten in their last
four, winning their last three successive games. Drawing 2-2
against at home to Birmingham City, big victories over Colchester
United and Burnley saw City net 10 goals over the two fixtures
ahead of a trip to Vicarage Road to face Watford.
In a tightly-contested game, Sincere Hall netted a last-minute
finish to secure a 1-0 win over the Hornets and move the Tigers
to seventh in the Professional Development League North table
with 30 points.
Preparing to play Wigan Athletic away on
Friday 12 April, the Under-21s face a tough
test against Paul Furlong’s QPR side. The
Hoops sit second in the southern division
points in 24 games played. Winning 12,
drawing seven and losing just five, QPR have
netted 58 goals in the league this season,
conceding 35.
QPR won their last fixture 7-0
against bottom-of-the-table Crewe
Alexandra. A team that fielded
first-teamers Jordan Archer and
Osman Kakay, a brace from
Alfie Lloyd, an own goal from
Stanley Dancey and finishes
from trialist George Grant,
Rafferty Pedder, Steven Bala
THE BOSS
MARTÍ CIFUENTES:
After a very brief playing career, Martí
Cifuentes began his coaching journey in his
early twenties with stints as a youth coach
at Ajax, Millwall, Terrassa FC and UE Rubí
between January 2007 and June 2013.
In February 2014, Cifuentes secured his first
senior managerial role when he was appointed
by UE Sant Andreu. He spent just a few months
with the club and later joined CE L’Hospitalet
where he had most of the 2015/16 season in
charge. In March 2017, he made his way to AIK
and managed both their academy and reserve
sides until May 2018. After this, Cifuentes
had stints with Sandefjord, Aalborg BK and
Hammarby. He arrived in England and was
appointed by QPR in October 2023.
2024 Winter Transfer Window:
During January, QPR made two permanent
additions to their squad by bringing in Lucas
Andersen and Michael Frey. They also signed Isaac
Hayden and Joe Hodge on loan. As well as this, Joe
Walsh made his way back to the club following the
conclusion of his loan.
Outgoing wise, Andre Dozzell, Charlie Kelman
and Stephen Duke-McKenna all went out on loan.
Youngster Kaydon Harrack left the Under-21 side
on a permanent deal.
In the previous window, QPR signed Asmir Begovic,
Morgan Fox, Jack Colback, Paul Smyth, Ziyad
Larkeche, Steve Cook, Taylor Richards and Reggie
Cannon permanently.
Shodipo and Ody Alfa all departed the club. Joe
Gubbins went out on loan.
Ten players departed the Under-21 team and nine
players left the Under-18 side. Deon Woodman,
Trent Randall and Harry Cant are all currently out
on loan.
Scouting Report
BETWEEN THE POSTS:
QPR’s goalkeeping options include Jordan Archer,
Joe Walsh and Matteo Salomon. None of them
have been utilised in the league. Archer has been an
unused substitute 28 times, Walsh has done so on
13 occasions and Salomon has featured in a match
day squad once. However, Archer and Walsh both
made appearances in the Carabao Cup.
AT THE BACK:
As part of their backline, QPR can pick from
Kenneth Paal, Steve Cook, Jake Clarke-Salter,
Jimmy Dunne, Osman Kakay, Reggie Cannon, Ziyad
Larkeche, Morgan Fox and Aaron Drewe. They’ve
all received league minutes so far this season. Paal,
Cook, Clarke-Salter and Dunne have amassed eight
league goals between them. Paal and Dunne have
both also contributed one assist.
IN THE MIDDLE:
Within their midfield, the Hoops can potentially
utilise Ilias Chair, Sam Field, Jack Colback, Elijah
Dixon-Bonner, Albert Adomah, Isaac Hayden,
Lucas Andersen, Joe Hodge, Taylor Richards,
Rafferty Pedder, Alexander Aoraha, Steven
Bala and Lorent Talla. Apart from the latter four,
all of them have featured in the league thus far.
Chair, Field, Colback and Hodge have racked up a
combined total of 12 league goals. Meanwhile, 12
assists have been shared by Chair, Field, Colback
and Andersen.
10
UPFRONT:
The Hoops possess Paul Smyth, Lyndon Dykes,
Rayan Kolli and Michael Frey in their attacking
ranks and all of them have been utilised in the
league. Smyth, Dykes and Frey have produced
eight league goals between them. Smyth, Dykes
and Kolli have also secured one assist each to their
names so far this season.
THE CAPTAIN:
At the age of 36, Asmir
Begović is a vastly experienced
goalkeeper. Begović joined QPR
ahead of the 2023/24 season
and was handed the captain’s
armband. He’s the only player
to have played every minute for
them in the league thus far and
has collected 11 clean sheets.
Begović started his career at
Portsmouth having signed for
them aged 16 in 2003. After
a few loan moves away, he
made his Pompey debut in May
2009. Begović racked up 17
appearances before moving to
Stoke City in February 2010.
He spent over five years with the
Potters where he amassed 172
appearances and one goal. That
goal came in November 2013
when his 97.5 yard long kick
found the back of the net against
Southampton after 13 seconds.
He went on to have stints with
Chelsea, AFC Bournemouth
and Everton. Begović has also
earned 63 caps for Bosnia and
Herzegovina.
YOUNG GUN:
Brought into the Hoops academy
in October 2020, Sinclair
Armstrong has subsequently
progressed into the first-team. He
initially had time out on loan with
Torquay United and Aldershot
Town during the 2021/22 season
in which he secured a combined
total of 12 appearances and four
goals.
Armstrong broke into the
first-team picture and made his
debut in July 2022. He went
on to feature 24 times in all
competitions during the 2022/23
campaign. So far in the 2023/24
season, the 20-year-old has been
utilised 35 times in the league and
has produced three league goals
and three assists.
Armstrong originally plied his
trade for Cherry Orchard and
later signed for Shamrock Rovers.
He was handed his senior debut
for Shamrock at the age of 15
in August 2018. Armstrong has
earned one cap for the Republic
of Ireland and also represented
his country in Under-17,
Under-19 and Under-21 age
groups.
11
STAR MAN:
Signed for a £750,000 fee in
October 2020, Chris Willock has
been one of QPR’s dangerous
attacking threats since then.
This was perfectly exemplified
during the 2021/22 season in
which Willock contributed seven
league goals and 11 assists in
35 league appearances. This
secured him three awards at the
club’s end of season awards.
In the 2023/24 campaign thus
far, Willock has featured in 35
league games and produced four
league goals and three assists.
His career began in Arsenal’s
youth system which he joined at
the age of five in 2003. Eleven
years later, the then 16-year-old
played in a first-team friendly for
the Gunners.
Willock was given his
competitive debut in September
2016. After making one more
appearance, he moved to Benfica
in June 2017. Willock scored 14
goals in 64 appearances for their
B team and also had loan spells
at West Bromwich Albion and
Huddersfield Town.

2011: Seventeen Away Games
Unbeaten
This meeting between the Hoops and Tigers was
played at Loftus Road on Easter Monday 2011 in
front of just shy of 17,400 spectators.
Wayne Routledge gave the hosts the lead in the
ninth minute and it looked like it would hand them
the Championship title. However, David Amoo
came off the Tigers bench and scored his first
professional goal in the 81st minute to derail the
celebrations.
2023: Connolly Bags
Birthday Brace
Aaron Connolly netted twice on his 23rd birthday
to help Hull City secure victory over Queens Park
Rangers at the MKM Stadium.
Inside the first ten minutes, Liam Rosenior’s team
were ahead. Cyrus Christie ran down the right wing
and laid a pass off to Connolly who clinched his first
goal for the club with a deflected shot.
Amoo’s goal also meant that Nigel Pearson’s men
had extended their run of games unbeaten away
from home to a record breaking 17, with the run
ending on the final day of the 2010/11 season
against Bristol City.
Hull City XI: Duke; Chester, Gerrard, Hobbs, Dawson;
Garcia, Harper, Evans (Akpan 12’), Cairney (Mclean
46’); Fryatt, Simpson (Amoo 71’).
Subs Not Used: Oxley, Devitt, Solano, Belaid.
The Tigers doubled their lead in the 62nd minute as
QPR defender Rob Dickie put the ball into his net.
A couple of minutes after this, Connolly marked his
birthday with a brace when he slotted the ball past
Hoops’ keeper Seny Dieng, after latching onto a
wonderful Jean Michaël Seri long pass.
Hull City XI: Ingram; Christie (Simons 89’), A. Jones,
McLoughlin, Elder; Docherty, Seri (C) (Longman 74’),
Tufan (Woods 74’), Slater; Estupiñán (T. Smith 89’),
Connolly (Coyle 84’).
Subs Not Used: Lo-Tutala, Figueiredo.
1949: Carter Brace
The Tigers and Hoops first locked horns in a
competitive fixture on Saturday 8 October 1949 at
Loftus Road.
Player-manager Raich Carter scored in the first half
as the sides were level at 1-1 at half-time. Further
goals were added by Carter, Ken Harrison and
Viggo Jensen in the second half which gave City an
emphatic first ever victory against their opposition.
Carter also scored in a 1-1 draw between the sides
in February 1950.
Hull City XI: Bly, Bowler, Berry, Greenhalgh, Seddon,
Mellor, Harrison, Jensen, Moore, Carter, Burbanks.
1963: A League Double
On Wednesday 30 October 1963, Cliff Britton’s
Tigers side entertained the Hoops at Boothferry
Park.
Billy Wilkinson provided the opening goal for
City in the 15th minute. Five minutes later, Ray
Henderson doubled this lead. By the 38th minute,
Britton’s team extended their lead to three goals
thanks to a Chris Chilton effort.
This made it a league double for the Tigers against
the Hoops after they won 2-0 at Loftus Road nine
days earlier. John McSeveney got himself on the
scoresheet whilst the hosts also conceded an own
goal.
Hull City XI: Swan, Davidson, Butler, Garvey, Feasey,
Sharpe, Clarke, Wilkinson, Chilton, Henderson, Shaw.
Ernie Shepherd
Born in the South Yorkshire town of Wombwell in
1919, Ernie Shepherd started out as an amateur
footballer for Dearne Valley Schools and Bradford
City. After a successful trial, he signed for Fulham
in September 1937. Shepherd made his senior
debut in September 1939 just before the outbreak
of the Second World War. This was later expunged
due to the suspension of the Football League.
During the war, he served in the RAF and remained
contracted to Fulham. Shepherd also made guest
appearances for Huddersfield Town and Bradford
City in wartime fixtures. His proper debut for
Fulham came in 1946. Shepherd scored 13 goals
in 72 appearances for the Cottagers before joining
West Bromwich Albion in December 1948 with
Arthur Rowley moving to Craven Cottage in
exchange.
In just three months, Shepherd was on the move
again as Raich Carter brought him to Boothferry
Park to bolster his Tigers squad. He provided an
instant impact, on his debut, by scoring the winning
goal away at Darlington. In total, he made six
appearances in the latter stages of the campaign.
Shepherd had played for three clubs in the 1948/49
season and all of them secured promotion at the
end of it. Therefore, he possesses a very unusual
record to his name. However, he never earned a
medal because he didn’t play the required amount
of games in order to do so.
In the second tier, Shepherd found it tough to adjust
to the new level and was utilised on a sporadic
basis. He mostly came into the starting XI whenever
first choice winger Eddie Burbanks wasn’t able to
play. At the end of the 1949/50 campaign, Shepherd
departed East Yorkshire and moved to Queens Park
Rangers. He made his Rangers debut in August
1950 and was a constant presence in the starting XI
throughout the six seasons he spent at Loftus Road.
Shepherd became player-manager of Hastings
United in 1956 and, when he retired from playing
in 1957, subsequently went into coaching. This led
to him having spells at clubs in England, Iceland
and Dubai. In 1967, he was appointed manager
of Southend United. Shepherd led the Shrimpers
for two years and then had a stint as manager at
Pegasus United and assistant manager of Leyton
Orient. He passed away at the age of 81 in March
2001.
Run to the Final
This season marks 10 years since Hull City reached the FA Cup final for
the first time in the club’s history. In each edition, we take a look at
one of the players who featured in our 2013/14 FA Cup run…
Stephen Quinn
There are often great moments in football that
come with a sense of inevitability, and when
Stephen Quinn came on at Wembley for an FA Cup
semi-final against Sheffield United, the club that
brought him to England, it felt like there was only
ever going to be one outcome.
The midfielder was brought on for his sixth FA
Cup appearance of the season, his 19th in all
competitions without a goal to his name, and it
took just three minutes for him to latch onto Jake
Livermore’s cross to put the Tigers 4-2 up against
their Yorkshire rivals.
The goal epitomised Quinn: ingenuitive and quickthinking
in diving backwards to get his head onto
the cross and direct it home, then subdued and
respectful in his celebration, but the emotion in his
face which suggested it meant so much more could
not be concealed.
This was without doubt one of the best moments
of the Irishman’s career, which earned him a start
in the final against Arsenal. Quinn went on to play
one more season in black and amber, scoring his
only Premier League goal against the Gunners in
May 2015.
STATS:
2013/14 FA Cup: 7 appearances,
1 goal
Hull City Career: 97 appearances,
5 goals
Heritage Number: #970
19
He has since gone on to play for Reading, Burton
Albion and Mansfield Town and has continued to
show his craftiness and creativity even today, at 38
years old.
Hull & Proud
Over 100 players to have played a professional game for Hull City came from
our city. Here, we take a look at the playing career of the players born in Hull…
Edgar Ainsworth
Born on De la Pole Avenue in West Hull, Edgar
Ainsworth initially turned out for Hull Cricket
Club as a teenager and was a talented batsman.
Possessing a height of six feet and two inches, he
switched to football and played as a goalkeeper.
Ainsworth began his career as an amateur in 1931
and had stints with Hull Windsor and Bridlington
Town.
He was called up to trial for the England Amateur
team and played three North versus South games.
In January 1933, Ainsworth earned his first cap
for England Amateurs and kept a clean sheet in a
1-0 win over Wales with the game being played
in Torquay. He won his second and final cap in
February 1933 which came in a 2-3 defeat against
Ireland in Belfast. As a result of this, Ainsworth was
rewarded with a celebratory dinner in his honour
in Hull.
At the time, he was playing for both Bridlington
Town and the Tigers reserves. In May 1933,
Ainsworth was handed his Tigers debut by Haydn
Green and played in a 2-3 defeat at Rochdale.
However, he was let go by the club and joined York
City ahead of the 1933/34 season. Ainsworth spent
BOOTHFERRY ROAD | 13 APRIL 1985
Brian Horton’s Hull City completed an emphatic
league double over Leyton Orient with a 5-1
victory over the O’s.
Producing a great comeback from 3-1 down at
half-time to win 5-4 in the earlier meeting against
the Greater London side at Brisbane Road back in
November 1984, the Tigers actually fell behind in
the reverse leg courtesy of Shaun Brooks’ penalty.
Billy Whitehurst netted the equaliser from a
tight angle on the 38th minute, with the help of a
deflection, before Stan McEwan’s 25-yard free-kick
nine minutes into the second half gave the Tigers a
2-1 lead.
21
Despite goalkeeper Rhys Wilmot getting a hand
to the strike, Whitehurst secured his brace on the
hour mark with a volley, before the striker turned
provider for Andy Flounders to net his sixth goal in
nine matches with a flicked header.
Two minutes after his assist, Whitehurst recorded
his first hat-trick for the club as Flounders teed
up the forward to smash the ball home from close
range with six minutes left to play.
Finishing the day second in the Division Three
table, this victory began a five-game winning streak
to help City get promoted out of the third tier of
English football.
History Makers
On This Day 10 years ago, Hull City reached their first ever
FA Cup final with a 5-3 victory over Sheffield United.
Five goals from five different players saw City
edge an eight-goal Wembley thriller to secure a
showpiece FA Cup Final clash against Arsenal.
In a historic day in the nation’s capital, the Tigers
were aiming to reach their first FA Cup Final in club
history, with opponents Sheffield United looking
to become the first side from the third tier to reach
the cup final since the formation of the Football
League in 1888.
“It’s amazing that it’s 10 years – it’s flown by! It
feels like yesterday,” said Liam Rosenior. “We beat
Sunderland in the quarter-finals, which was an
amazing experience to make the semi-finals in the
first place. We played Sheffield United, who at
the time were in League One, but they had some
outstanding players – Harry Maguire and Jamie
Murphy, who I ended up rooming with at Brighton,
were in that team.
“When I joined the club, we were 20th in the
Championship and we had no owners. To go from
that to within two years playing in an FA Cup semifinal
was incredible. It was amazing. My bonus for
reaching the FA Cup semi-final was less than paying
for all the tickets for my family and I was happy to
do that; I had 35 family members there. It was one
of those days I’ll never forget.”
“It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years,” said
David Meyler. “It is one of those landmark moments
22
I think for a lot of the lads that played that day in
their careers. It is such a special day for me and a lot
of other lads.
“When the draw was done after Sunderland, you
were looking as the other semi-final was Wigan
Athletic and Arsenal, so we knew we could draw
any of the other three teams and we were hoping to
avoid Arsenal. When the draw came with Sheffield
United, it was one of those games you looked at it
saying we are in the Premier League, playing really
well and we’re playing Sheffield United who were in
League One, but still a good team.
“All of a sudden you get that buzz and experience of
we’re going to be playing at Wembley for an FA Cup
semi-final, but also as favourites,” added Meyler. “I
think if you look back, the first game was against
Middlesbrough. Then we played Southend United,
Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland so every team
we played, they were below us so it was another
team we felt we could go and win this game. You
know your 90 minutes away from an FA Cup final
which then potentially gave us the opportunity to
win a trophy. When the draw came, we were excited
and the coaching staff at the time, I don’t think we
had prepped as much for a game, just because it was
such an iconic game going into.”
In the 900th game played at Wembley Stadium, the
Blades opened the afternoon’s scoring 19 minutes
in, courtesy of former Everton striker Jose Baxter
before City responded minutes before half-time
after Jake Livermore threaded a perfectly weighted
ball across the face of the goal for Yannick Sagbo
to slide in. Just two minutes later, the Tigers found
themselves behind again as Murphy cut the ball
back for Steven Scougall to rifle home.
“We had a slow start and Sheffield United had
nothing to lose. Nobody probably gave them a
chance and they used that to their advantage and
they were on the front foot from the whistle,” said
Meyler. “They came after us and attacked us and it
took us a while to settle into the game. When we
got in at half-time, Curtis Davies gave a big speech.
He really led the half-time team talk and the
manager came in and said, ‘you heard him’ and then
made two changes.”
Desperately in need of a spark, Bruce looked to his
bench at half-time, and one of his substitutes made
an instant impact. After a goalmouth scramble,
Matty Fryatt side-footed home in the six-yard box
to restore parity.
23
“We got the goal straight after half-time through
Fryatt and that really for us in the second half was
us playing our way,” added Meyler.
City’s Premier League quality finally began to shine
through, as three goals in 18 second-half minutes
put the Tigers 4-2 to the good. Goals from Fryatt,
Tom Huddlestone, and Stephen Quinn against his
former club had the Tigers dreaming of a maiden
FA Cup Final berth. The Blades added a consolation
goal late on, but Meyler’s 93rd-minute goal secured
a famous win under the Wembley arch.
“We were 4-2 up going into the last 15 minutes
and we conceded a bad goal to make it 4-3,”
remembered Meyler. “If you remember, Sheffield
United had a good chance and wasted it at 4-3 and
then obviously we picked up the ball and drove
forward.
“It is crazy to say as there was 80,000 at the
game, but I could hear Steve Bruce shout ‘go to
the corner’ so I knew time was near played. I was
known to break forward from midfield and try and
get beyond so ‘Elmo’ (Ahmed Elmohamady) got
the ball off Matty Fryatt and I’m running thinking,
I’m in on goal here. I’m screaming for ‘Elmo’ to give
me the ball to put me in. I swear and stand by this,
I don’t think if any other player had the ball on the
pitch, they wouldn’t put a ball through for me on
goal, they would put it in the corner, but ‘Elmo’ saw
that I was in.
“Moments like that is why you go through
those shooting drills in training and it becomes
repetition. I always think it was the relief goal, like
there is no way back for them now. Obviously to
score what is technically not the winning goal but
the fifth goal was pretty special.”
“That last goal was a huge sense of relief,”
explained Rosenior. “I was at fault for one of the
“It was one of the best semi-finals anyone can
ever remember. I remember both sets of fans, the
atmosphere in the stadium, ending up winning 5-3
and it will go down as one of the best days of my
career,” said Rosenior.
goals – Jamie Murphy beat me for a cross and I felt
terrible. We had a really resilient group. We had
a group of leaders and characters who fought for
each other, and we showed that. It was a ridiculous
game, the way it ended up 5-3. It was end-to-end,
so open and when that goal went in at the end, it
was huge relief and almost surreal then to think we
were going to play in an FA Cup final.”
When referee Andre Marriner blew the whistle,
history was made as Hull City reached the FA Cup
final for the first time in the club’s history. Both
Meyler and Rosenior played the full semi-final and
were ecstatic to achieve what they did. Both playing
in the final against Arsenal, the duo look back with
fond memories of the FA Cup run 10 years on.
“I take huge pride in it. I’m not someone who looks
back too much. It was a surreal experience. The
whole year was amazing. To make Europe, stay in
the Premier League in our first year and play in an
FA Cup final, Steve did an amazing job. It was an
amazing feeling representing this club at the time.
Incredible memories.”
“To be honest, it is special,” answered Meyler when
asked about being part of the first ever Hull City
team to reach an FA Cup final. “It is a whole lot more
than just that, because of the memories you share
with your family and your friends and the fans.
Getting into the semi-final and final and to lead an
FA Cup final 2-1 for 60 minutes, we were so close.
“We’ve cemented ourselves in Hull City’s history,
but it would have been even more special to win it,
but at the same time, the semi-final is such an iconic
game with the whole drama of it and to be able to
relive that moment with the fans when you meet
them is incredible. I still go to the games and fans
still go on about it, that is how special it is 10 years
on.”
Abdüş Ömür
Settled into life in East Yorkshire, Abdüş Ömür is
looking for a strong end to the season.
Signing from Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor
in the winter window, the 24-year-old has already
become a firm fan favourite amongst the City
faithful. Operating predominantly out wide on the
right flank, the midfielder has already shown his
quality when the club first saw him in a mid-season
friendly between the Tigers and Trabzonspor back
in November 2022.
“I remember the game. We drew 1-1 and after the
game, me and Ozan (Tufan) spoke jokingly saying
how was England,” said Abdüş. “He said ‘very good,
everyone is good’ and I cannot imagine that after
that game, I would come to Hull, but life is like this
and maybe that game is a story for us.”
The Türkiye international played 211 games in total
for Trabzonspor prior to his switch to City. Winning
four major honours with the Karadeniz Fırtınası
(Black Sea Storm), he revealed the time was right
for him to leave the club, with Tigers’ Chairman
Acun Ilıcalı meeting the midfielder to talk about
coming across to England.
“I played almost nine years at Trabzonspor. It was
hard to leave, because it was my dream to become
champions with Trabzonspor. I had four cups there
and I felt it was time to leave.
“The first reason I came to England is Acun Ilıcalı,
because he is a person I love so much. He is very
successful and when we got together, he told me
about his dreams and what we are going to do
with Hull. We have dreams with Hull for the fans
and players and after one hour of speaking to each
other, I said ‘we will write your story together,’ and
after that, I am here. I have dreams from when
I first came here and I hope at the end of the
season, we can achieve them.”
Speaking on life in England, the 24-year-old
explained the importance of the role Ozan Tufan
has had in settling into life at Hull City, along with
having help from a number of Turkish staff that
work at the club.
“Except the weather, everything is good in England
and Hull!” joked Abdüş. “Everyone is friendly to
me. Supporters come over and ask for images and
say we support you all. I like to live in Hull.
“Me and Ozan have a good relationship. We spend
time together when we work around the house.
We talk at times about each other to improve
ourselves. He is like my big brother as every day we
are together. I love him so much and it is important
for Ozan to be here.
“This is my second team after Trabzonspor. I
prepared myself to transfer and here, we have a
lot of Turkish people,” explained Abdüş. “When I
came, they tried to help with my house, my car, my
adaptation for the team so having people here, the
adaptation was short.”
Expected to make his long-awaited return at some point
in today’s fixture against QPR, Liam Delap is
delighted to be back with the Tigers.
The 21-year-old suffered a serious knee injury
on New Year’s Day against Sheffield Wednesday
and has since missed the rest of the 2023/24
season, returning back to Hull City last Monday.
Being with Manchester City to complete his
rehabilitation, the striker is eager
to be back out on the pitch for
the final five games of the regular
season.
“I am buzzing to be back. It has been
a long time coming since I have
played, but I am really happy
to be back now and hopefully
play in the next few games,”
said Delap. “The amount of
get me back, so it is
now just focusing on
being back here and
hopefully helping the
team out with the
last few games.
“The knee feels really good,”
added Delap. “Obviously the
decision was made for me to
go and have my recovery back at Manchester City
so it has all been fine, and now I am back ready. I’ve
come back over here and I just cannot wait to get
started!”
A popular figure amongst the dressing room, the
Winchester-born forward is happy to be back
amongst his teammates after being back at his
parent club, along with meeting the winter recruits.
“It is really good to be back around the boys. Seeing
them all again and obviously they’re some new
faces too, so it nice to meet them, but it is a
great feeling to be around them all. I love it
here so I am really happy to be back.”
With the England Under-21 international
scheduled to feature in this afternoon’s test
against QPR, Delap is looking forward to be
back doing what he loves the most, along with
a reunion with the Tigers fans, who voted him
McVitie’s Player of the Month in December.
“It is what I have been doing for the past three
months; just praying that I would be back soon
and back playing,” revealed Delap when asked
about his imminent return. “It is something you
look forward to as a player playing so I cannot
wait to be back out on the pitch.
“The most important thing about football
is the fans. They get behind you and it
is such a great feeling to play in-front of
everyone so I cannot wait to see them.”

Academy Player Focus
Jack Leckie
After being out for an extended period, Jack Leckie was
delighted to pull on a Hull City shirt once again.
The Newcastle-born defender has been out for
almost seven months with consecutive ankle
injuries, first sustained whilst out on loan with
National League North side Farsley Celtic in
September. Featuring six times in England’s sixth
tier, the ex-Burnley and Newcastle United man
made his first appearance for Hull City Under-
21s when coming off the bench to replace Bora
Aydınlık late-on in their 1-0 win against Watford
on Monday at Vicarage Road.
“It is great to be back; it has been a long time. I think
the last time I played was six to seven months ago,”
said Leckie.
“With the way the game was going, I wasn’t too sure
if I was going to come on, because I was scheduled
for around 30 to 35 minutes as that was my limit.
However, with how the game was with it being 0-0,
end-to-end, I wasn’t too sure if I would come on
or not, but one of our lads got cramp and we had
already made quite a few substitutions so it gave
me the opportunity to come on for around the last
10 minutes.”
Focusing on his short time at loan club Farsley, the
20-year-old discussed the differences between
academy and men’s football before speaking about
the process throughout his recovery.
“With Under-21s football, it is a lot more technical
while going out on loan, I found it like you were
never really safe. It was really direct and I think
there was nowhere really you could hide. You are
playing for points and trying to see the games out. I
enjoyed my loan. I found it easier and harder at the
same time, but I was really enjoying it. The season
looked really promising and I was hoping to get as
many minutes as I could out there to build my CV, so
it was just unfortunate to get injured at the time.
“The injury hasn’t been easy; it has been quite
hard to be honest,” explained Leckie. “With my
first injury, I was so close to being back. I had done
my rehab, was in training and I was meant to play
within the next couple of days and then I had to
get surgery again, which was rotten luck, but it has
given us time to work on other things and areas of
my game.
“Not the technical side, but physically in the gym
a lot and working on things like that. I thought I
would use my time wisely and make sure that this
time that when I come back, my body was strong
everywhere and come back with the right mindset
so I can hit the ground running and try and take off
where I left off.”
With the Under-21s already having played Wigan
Athletic on Friday, City have seven games left of the
regular season, starting with this afternoon’s outfit
QPR sending their Under-21s to the MKM Stadium
on Tuesday 16 April, KO: 1pm.
Looking to focus on getting back fully fit, Leckie
is determined to finish the 2023/24 season as
strongly as possible.
“I think I am staying with the Under-21s until the
end of the season. I still can’t play 90 minutes yet as
I am still building towards that. When I can get back
to that 90 minutes, I have to work to get my spot
back, as there have been players there who have
been doing well.
“However, I think I am in a good place with my
mindset to get back in. I have had enough time off
to work on anything I need to outside of football so
the plan is to get back in training, work hard, earn
my spot back, and try and get in as many games as I
can until the end of the season.”
Loan update
Thimothée Lo-Tutala
Being a key player in Doncaster Rovers’ rise up the Sky Bet League Two
table, Thimothée Lo-Tutala is hoping for a play-off position.
With four games of the season to go, Doncaster
currently sit 10th in the table, four points off
seventh-placed Crawley Town. Since Lo-Tutala
joined on the winter transfer deadline day, the
21-year-old has kept six clean sheets in 14
appearances, with five coming in his last seven.
Last Tuesday, Rovers’ 2-1 win over Walsall saw
Doncaster win a seventh consecutive game for the
first time in 77 years.
“I didn’t even realise the record as it was seven wins
on the bounce,” said Lo-Tutala. “When I came in,
the goal was to just to get as high up as we can in
the table with good results. We’re doing extremely
well, but we can’t get complacent. We still have four
games to go and there is still the chance of play-offs
so we’re just taking each game as it comes.”
Speaking on the loan overall, the France youth
international has current Tigers’ loanee Tom Nixon
at the club along with former coaching duo Grant
McCann and Cliff Byrne, as well as ex-City loanee
Hakeeb Adelakun.
“I’m finding the loan really, really good. I feel
like obviously to get game time in itself is a big
blessing, but to back it up with results is even
better. It is a massive learning experience for me
and I cannot thank Hull enough for it with ‘Baz’
(Barry Richardson) and all the coaching staff, and
obviously Doncaster and their coaching staff to
trust me to come in. I feel like it is a massive learning
experience for me. I’m really taking it on board and
hopefully with four games left, we can add four
more clean sheets and four more wins.
“Grant and Cliff have been top. They have made me
feel at home by just talking to me, being calm and
putting their confidence in me. They are really easy
to talk to and the goal they have in place and the
way they want to play just suits me and I couldn’t
be happier really. ‘Nix’ has been here since the start
of the season and when I came, he was already part
of the group. He has helped me out a lot like all the
lads have done from day one.”
52
One key performance for Lo-Tutala and Doncaster
was defeating title-chasers Wrexham 1-0 earlier
this month. With the game heading into the latter
stages, the Gonesse-born shot-stopper produced
a stunning save that was shared on social media
amongst both the Doncaster and Hull City faithful.
“I remember the save. Initially, Steven Fletcher
came on the pitch and he just won every header. He
was causing us massive problems so I said to myself
that I either need to come for these crosses to stop
him from heading it or just stay
and react. Obviously the last
minute I stayed and reacted to
it,” explained Lo-Tutala.
“I felt our defender had done
well to put him off and close
the angle, so I just stood my
ground and just reacted to the
ball really, I didn’t really do
much thinking to be honest.
“The fans are amazing. Every
game they are behind us and
constantly singing. After
every goal, I’m a very
passionate player so
I celebrate with them
and I feel like that is
important, because at
the end of the day they
are paying their hardearned
money to watch
us play and I just feel
like that is the
least I can do as
a player just
to give back
to them.”
With four
games to go,
Doncaster
welcome
Accrington
Stanley this afternoon,
before facing Barrow, Colchester United
and Gillingham. With a four-point gap
separating Doncaster from the play-offs,
Lo-Tutala wants to repeat what he did with
his loan at Stevenage last season and gain
promotion to Sky Bet League One.
“Everything is possible for those who believe. That
experience with Stevenage is one that I will never
forget with the promotion; that stays with you for
life. I feel like just being exposed to that in general
gives me even more hunger and willingness to want
to get promoted again and I just feel like the team
we have at Doncaster is more than capable to do so.
“I do believe by God’s grace that it will happen. We
have to take every game as it comes as we have
been doing, not getting too complacent and we just
have to turn the gear up even more and just see
what the Lord has in store for us really.
