4 / The One And Only

Welcome back to Deepdale for this afternoon’s
game against Norwich City.
We had a brilliant
ending to the match
here on Tuesday
night against
Huddersfield Town, which everyone
was delighted with.
The games come thick and fast and I
thought the lads were maybe a bit flat in
the first half so we asked for more and
they definitely gave us that.
PP
It’s three fantastic goals from Milly which
secured the three points and I was very
pleased seeing him walk off with the match
ball because he’s worked so hard.
I think it showed the togetherness and
belief of this group as well, because it can
be hard when you’re playing every few
days and you’re missing people through
injuries, but there’s no time to feel sorry
for yourselves.
Likewise, there wasn’t much time to
celebrate that win because straight away
“We need you
to be loud and
proud for us
again today”
our heads were in an even more important
game against Norwich.
We know they’re a fantastic team and
they’re going well in the league. They’ve got
some brilliant players, but as always it’s
about controlling the things we can.
If we can perform to the levels which we’ve
seen multiple times here at Deepdale so
far this season, we give ourselves the best
possible chance of getting a result.
We need you to be loud and proud for us
again today, because anything you can give
the lads can only help us on the pitch.
Enjoy the game.
Ched
Evans
PP
Ready to play his part.
The One And Only / 11

It’s not been a 12 months which
Ched Evans will not particularly
want to remember. First, a
potentially life-changing injury
which led to him being a step away
from paralysis, and then – after a
heroic return – another injury to
leave him sidelined.
There’s certainly no moping or
feeling sorry for himself, though. An
experienced pro, Ched calls it “just one
of those things a footballer has to go
through”.
Now, though, he’s back fit, feeling
strong, and ready to help the team in
whatever way he can for the final part
of what could be a thrilling end to the
Sky Bet Championship campaign.
Ched said: “The objective is to win every
game, clearly. If only it was that easy in
this league.
“I think we’ve got the potential to win
12 / The One And Only
every game. It’s just down to us now.
We can’t rely on other teams.
“It’s about taking each game as it comes
and taking the three points for us to
have any chance of getting into the
Play-Offs.”
Every result between now and the end
of the season will of course have a say
on where North End find themselves
come the final day, but today feels like
a big one.
With Norwich City
currently occupying that
final Play-Off spot, which
PNE and a number of
teams want to take off
them, a positive result
could make the top six a
very realistic prospect.
Ched said: “They’ll be
under pressure as well
to keep their position
in the table so hopefully that plays in
our favour.
“You’ve seen the lads at home. We’ve
made it a tough place to come to and
it’ll be a long trip for them and hopefully
we can get the win to put us in a great
position.
“It’s not going to be an easy game by
any means but if we do what we can do
and turn up – every single one of us –

we’ll give ourselves the best chance of
winning.”
In facing the Canaries, Ched is coming
up against the side where he had his
first real taste of what men’s football
is all about.
The striker made his professional debut
for Manchester City in September 2007
against Norwich City, and clearly his
cameo from the bench caught the eye of
opposition boss Glenn Roeder.
Soon, Ched was heading on loan to
East Anglia for what ended up being a
successful first experience of the senior
game – going on to score ten goals in 28
matches as a teenager.
“Having that experience going out and
doing well was mega for me, both on
a personal level and professionally,”
explained Ched.
“It showed me what it really means to
win. Before that, I was playing reserve
games and nothing really mattered.
“You step into the professional game
and suddenly everything matters. It’s
people’s livelihoods and jobs, so to get
that experience at such a young age was
vital for me.”
While his football education was
important, the spell with the Canaries
also taught him a lot off the pitch, having
spent time initially in a hotel before
having a house to himself, away from
family and friends.
In a location he loved and getting the
chance to regularly play in front of
average crowds of 25,000, it’s a time of
his career he remembers fondly.
He reminisced: “I absolutely loved being
there. You can just tell how much it
means to the fans down there.
“It was a surreal experience at that
age and I learned a lot. It’s funny, I
remember negotiating a contract with
PP
Glenn Roeder and I thought I’d won
the jackpot because I got a few extra
hundred quid a week.
“I was over the moon with it, not
realising what some of the other players
were on.
“It was fun, and then when the business
end starts coming into it you start
realising how important it is to win
games in this league.”
Unfortunately, due to splintered
cartilage in his kneecap, Ched hasn’t
been able to experience that three-point
feeling on the pitch this calendar year.
What his time out has done, though, is
give him chance to better prepare for
life after playing football – albeit, he
feels that’s still a few years away.
The forward’s been busy working on
his A Licence with the FA, and having
been taken out of the usual day-to-day
routine of training and playing, he’s
again in
training
and now
for the
final
push”
been able to see a different side to the
game.
Ched said: “I think it’s been a bit of an
eye opener really. As a footballer, you
just turn up to work and everything is
just kind of in place for you.
PP
“Actually, the work that goes into
everything behind the scenes
is constructive, it’s planned, it’s
methodicial, and it’s time and effort.
“Doing my coaching badges, I’ve really
seen what goes into making everything
happen and that’s been a really good
experience.
“I’m hoping I should have my A Licence
in the summer, and I’ve got a few
sessions still to put on with the Academy
before then which I’m really looking
forward to.
“The staff there and here have been
great with me. Marshy [Mike Marsh]
has helped me. The analysts have helped
me. The gaffer has helped me, which I’m
grateful for.
“Ultimately, that’s the next stage in my
career and building up to it now while
I’m still playing is probably the best thing
I can do for if and when I do go into it.”
That’s something for further down the
line, though, with Ched’s mind still fully
on influencing things on the pitch as
a player.
“By no means am I saying I’m done with
playing,” he said. “I feel good. My body
feels good, other than a couple of nonfootballing
injuries which I’ve had.
“Obviously it has been a tough season
with regards to my neck, coming back,
and then having my knee problem.
“Now that’s been cleaned out, though,
and I’m feeling good again in training
and now I’m back for the final push.”
The penultimate home game of the season sees Norwich City make the long journey
to Deepdale. David Wagner’s side recently beat fellow promotion pushers and local
rivals Ipswich Town, adding real solidity to their Play-Off bid. Earlier this season,
the return fixture ended in a 0-0 draw, which was the last time the East Anglian
team failed to score at Carrow Road. With both North End and Norwich wanting to
make the top six, today’s result could have a big say on who makes the cut.
A lethal forward who proved himself
at the highest level, Teemu Pukki
played a vital role in both of Norwich
City’s recent Championship titles.
The forward scored 88 goals and
provided a further 29 assists for
the Canaries in just over 200 games.
At the peak of his powers he was
amongst the country’s most lethal
finishers, claiming the Premier
League Player of the Month award in
August 2019.
Norwich have taken part in European
competition just once – reaching
the third round of the UEFA Cup in
1993/94, however they achieved a
feat unmatched by any other club in
the country. Before moving to the
Allianz Arena, Bavarian giants Bayern
Munich played at the Olympic Stadium
and the Canaries are the only British
side to win at the ground. The game
ended 2-1, with Jeremy Goss and
Mark Bowen scoring the goals for
To Look
Out for
Angus Gunn
Goalkeeper
Age: 28
Nationality: Scottish
A key component in Norwich City’s recent form,
Angus Gunn has sent his clean sheet tally into
double figures this season.
Son of Norwich City Hall of Fame ‘keeper
Bryan, Gunn began his career as a forward for
Norwich's U8s before becoming a goalkeeper and
representing the youth teams until 2011, when he
moved to Manchester City.
After time with Stoke City and Southampton,
which provided him with Premier League
experience, Gunn returned to East Anglia in 2021.
He switched his allegiance to Scotland last year
and made his debut against Cyprus in a EURO 2024
qualifying victory, and he’ll hope to play a part at
this summer’s tournament.
Shane Duffy
Defender
Age: 32
Nationality: Irish
Shane Duffy arrived at Carrow Road upon the
expiration of his contract at Premier League club
Fulham.
The centre half has consistently shown
solid performances upon his return to the
Championship, after spending six years with
Brighton & Hove Albion.
He achieved promotion to the Premier League
at the end of his first season with the Seagulls,
experience that the defender now brings to the
Norwich dressing room.
With three points invaluably important for both
sides today, a cool, calm and collected head in
defence could well make the difference.
Gabriel Sara
Midfielder
Age: 24
Nationality: Brazilian
Swapping São Paulo for Norwich in 2022, Gabriel
Sara has been instrumental in the Canaries’
midfield this term.
The Brazilian has hit double figures in both goals
and assists already for Norwich, an extremely
impressive feat.
In his first season in English football, he was
named as Norwich City's Player of the Season,
picking up the Barry Butler Memorial Trophy
following a supporter vote.
Arguably David Wagner’s stand-out player,
Sara will be one to look out for at Deepdale this
afternoon.
#
9
Josh Sargent
striker
Age: 24
Nationality: American
Josh Sargent may have had a slow start to life
in England when he first made the move from
Werder Bremen in 2021, but there can be no
doubts surrounding the forward’s credentials
now.
At the time of writing, the USMNT star has a goalto-game
ratio in the Championship of 0.87; netting
almost every time he plays. This campaign has
already seen the striker surpass his tally from
last season in just over half the appearances.
On the international stage, he became the
youngest player to score for the United States
at the FIFA U20 World Cup at the age of 17 in May
2017.
the boss:
David Wagner
Age: 52
Nationality: German-American
The mastermind behind Huddersfield Town’s promotion
to the Premier League, disciple of Jürgen Klopp and
now the head coach of Norwich City, David Wagner
brings a unique energy to management in the
Championship.
It was the aforementioned Klopp who oversaw
Wagner’s first steps in management, as the Frankfurtborn,
former USMNT striker was given the role as head
coach of Borussia Dortmund 2.
Wagner exited the role upon Klopp’s appointment at
Liverpool and would shortly make his own move to
England, one division lower, to join Huddersfield Town.
A brilliant man-manager, a trait that would’ve been
helped in no small part by Klopp, Wagner created a
tight group bond during his time with The Terriers,
something that paid dividends during his second season
with the club.
Against the odds, Wagner led Huddersfield Town to the
Premier League for the first time, beating Reading in
the Play-Off final on penalties and would somehow go
on to achieve a greater feat – keeping the side in the
top flight.
However, the following January saw Town sitting
bottom of the pile, eight points off safety and alas,
Wagner saw his contract terminated.
Things would get worse for the coach in his next role,
back in Germany with Schalke 04. 18 league games
without a win saw Wagner sacked early in the 2020/21
season, which would eventually end with the club
relegated to Bundesliga.2.
After time in Switzerland with Young Boys, Wagner was
appointed head coach of Norwich City in January 2023,
with his first game in charge here at Deepdale, with the
Canaries running out 4-0 winners.
The event included mixed and girl’s U16
teams representing nine community club
organisations (CCOs), including Preston North
End, Manchester City, Manchester United, among
others.
The Premier League trophy was at the venue along
with Azeem Amir, who put on an engaging workshop
on blind football for the participants. Azeem
represents England and Great Britain Men's Blind
Football Teams and was recently involved in the new
England kit launch alongside Harry Kane, Lauren
stars.
PNECET staff members, Mo and Munira, led a
workshop shedding light on Ramadan, promoting
inclusivity and understanding during the holy
month. Their session aimed to foster a culture of
support be it on the field, at work, or in everyday
life, for those who were fasting during Ramadan.
We also welcomed Preston North End Academy and
first team players, Cole McGhee, Kacper Pasiek,
Jack Whatmough and Liam Millar, who all came out
in solidarity with the teams representing PNECET
and PNEFC.
Community Engagement Coordinator and the person
who oversees delivery of our Premier League Kicks
sessions here at PNECET, Alistair White, expressed
his satisfaction at the success of the day, saying:
"The Premier League Kicks Cup Regional Qualifying
Tournament was a fantastic showcase of talent and
camaraderie. It was lovely to see young players
from various CCOs coming together to compete,
learn from each other and enjoy football with a
smile on their faces.”
Changemakers
Event
During March, two of our team here at the Trust attended
a special Premier League Changemakers event at the
National Football Museum in Manchester, with two students
from Preston Muslim Girls High School.
The day saw 12 to 15-year-olds from
27 professional football clubs come
together to explore gender equality
and opportunities for women within
the football industry. It was a day
spent celebrating female leadership,
as part of the Premier League’s
commitment to supporting women and
girls.
Throughout the day, there were three
workshops to help girls and young
women to develop their personal
skills, confidence and to build positive
attitudes for leadership.
1963/64
So near, yet so far!
This series shows just how close Preston North End came to winning both
promotion and the FA Cup final. By Ian Rigby and Mike Payne.
Matchday 51
The 1964 FA
Cup final at
Wembley
Having narrowly lost out on
promotion, the team had to put
their disappointments behind them
and concentrate on bringing the FA
Cup back home to Deepdale for the
first time since 1938. In front of a
full capacity Wembley, Alex Dawson
kicked off to Alan Spavin who had his
sleeves rolled up straight from the
start of this 83rd FA Cup final. North
End were not seen to be overawed
with the occasion, in fact they came
out of the traps the quicker and more
eager of the two teams. Spavin and
the proud skipper, Nobby Lawton,
were prompting the forwards with
both wingers, Dave Wilson and Dougie
Holden prominent. 17-year-old Howard
Kendall was showing no nerves at all
and it was he who started the move
that led to the opening goal after ten
minutes of play. Dawson received the
orange ball and put in a terrific shot.
The Hammers’ goalkeeper Jim Standen
could only parry his effort and saw it
hover close to the goal-line, only for
Holden to react the quickest and prod
the ball home from very close range
34 / The One And Only
leaving John Bond in his wake. Despite
West Ham looking nervous and edgy,
they equalised within a minute. Bobby
Moore pushed forward and gave a
pin-point pass to 18-year-old winger
John Sissons. A quick one-two with
Johnny Byrne and it was 1-1, sending
the London fans into song, singing
‘I’m forever blowing bubbles’. It was
reported that North End were playing
entertaining football, the old Scottish
style of play, with ground passes
moving sweetly from man to man. West
Ham could have taken the lead on 34
minutes, but Alan Kelly saved brilliantly
from Geoff Hurst. Soon afterwards,
Kendall – breaking forward once again
– had a shot deflected for a corner off
Moore. The corner, taken by Wilson,
was met sweetly by Dawson’s head and
the underdogs fully deserved their
2-1 half-time lead. West Ham changed
their tactics in the second half as
Lawton and Spavin were shadowed
much more closely. The London-based
team came more into the game and
within seven minutes of the restart
equalised the game. Kelly saved a
good header from Ken Brown but
the ball went to Hurst who headed it
goalwards. Kelly got his hands to his
effort as it clattered off the underside
of the crossbar, but Kelly who hurt
his lower back could only help the ball
over the line. Both teams had chances
after this and the thrilling game looked
as if it would go into extra-time, but
two minutes into injury-time North End
suffered the cruellest of blows when
the top-flight team scored the winner
with a Ronnie Boyce header from a
Peter Brabrook centre. North End had
contributed to a great final but sadly
had to collect runners-up medals.

GOALSCORING
IS AN ART!
THE LEADING GOALSCORERS IN
PRESTON NORTH END’S HISTORY
By Mike Payne and Ian Rigby
In this series through the season
we look at the art of goalscoring
and celebrate the top 30 players
who lead the North End scoring
charts. The style, the goals and the
players; career details. Sir Tom
Finney will conclude the series, as he
is No. 1 in every sense.
In our last home programme, against
Huddersfield Town, the player featured
was Dennis Hatsell, who finished on 58
goals for North End. However, there
was one other player who finished on
that total so it is only fair that I feature
him today. RICHARD CRESSWELL
– a born and bred Yorkshireman –
crossed the Pennines in March 2001 to
36 / The One And Only
become a big favourite in Lancashire.
Actually, that is not strictly true as
he signed for Preston North End,
initially on a loan deal, from Leicester
City, where Cresswell had been since
September 2000. The former York City
and Sheffield Wednesday forward was
not the most prolific of goalscorers
for a striker at the time, but he was
a grafter and he quickly won the fans
over at Deepdale by scoring on his
debut against Wolves, immediately
after joining the club. Manager David
Moyes took PNE to within one game
of the Premiership that year, but they
lost the final in the Millenium Stadium
to Bolton Wanderers. Cresswell was
in North End’s team that day and after
the season ended Moyes decided
to arrange a permanent deal for
the player, paying £500,000 for his
signature. It was money well spent
and gave us a player that the fans
really appreciated. His drive and
energy and sheer hard work won
them over despite his lack of goals in
those early Deepdale days. To say he
was unlucky not to score more was
an understatement, as he often hit the
woodwork, forced amazing saves out
of the ‘keepers, all the time refusing to
give up in his quest for more goals. He
helped North End reach the final of the
Play-Offs. After his full transfer was
sorted, he had a spell as a super sub,
often coming on to create or score
goals himself. Then later, he forged
excellent partnerships with the likes
of Johnny Macken, David Healy and
later on with David Nugent. Not only
that, the goals started to flow, making
him leading scorer over the next two
seasons. One big turning point came
in a match at home to Crystal Palace
where his all-round display earned this
accolade from the LEP reporter, “The
dirtiest shirt on the pitch proved what
a muddy marvel Richard Cresswell is
turning out to be. His heavily-soiled

PP
white jersey was graphic proof
that this wasn’t just an afternoon
of popping up in the right place at
the right time to grab the headlines.
Cresswell’s commanding performance
was worthy of a standing ovation for
effort alone, and as he left the pitch
the crowd rose to North End’s latest
star.” That just shows what a hardworking
player Cresswell was and
on New Year’s Day in 2005 Cresswell
scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 home
win against Sunderland. His other
hat-trick, ironically, came at former
club Leicester in a League Cup tie. I bet
that gave him a big thrill. A fine player,
and his son, Charlie, is now a Leeds
United player..
PNE Appearances:
FA Cup 2+1 (3)
League Cup 8+2 (5)
Play-Offs 4+2 (1)
It is worth noting that there
are a further nine players
that have topped 50 goals for
the Deepdale club and here
are those names, with their
goal tallies. Daniel Johnson,
Jimmy Dougal, Brian Godfrey
and Joe Garner, each with
57 goals, John Thomas (55),
Willie McIntosh (54), Frank
Becton and Alex James (53
each), and finally Alex Reid
with 50. As for the next to
join this list, well, there is
one man who is closing in
on yet another milestone for
his club, our skipper Alan
Browne. As I write this article
he is currently just four away
from that magic 50 mark on
46 goals. Alan still has a fair
way to go to catch our next
featured subject in this series,
though. In the final matchday
programme, as promised all
season, the man himself will be
featured, SIR TOM FINNEY. His
total? All will be revealed, so
be sure and buy a programme
Strikes from Felipe Rodriguez-Gentile
and Theo Mawene then gave North End
a two-goal lead at the break, before
Rodriguez-Gentile scored his second of
the day in the 78th minute.
League leaders PNE had an opportunity
to open the scoring in the eighth
minute after good work from
Goldsmith, but a home defender
ensured his pass didn’t reach
Rodriguez-Gentile.
Ayden Garrigan came on at half-time
period, only to see his effort cleared
off the line, and Ellis Horan’s follow-up
was then deflected wide.
