had a golden chance to
in off Adams, who then
reacted quickest to
maximum points.

DEAR SAINTS FANS, WELCOME BACK TO ST MARY’S
FOR TODAY’S HOME FIXTURE AGAINST WATFORD.
It was really important
for us to get back to
winning ways here on
Tuesday night against
Coventry City.
As a group we felt
really frustrated
about the previous
three games. I think
everyone in the stands
felt it too, which I can
understand given
the results. I believe
our performance on
Tuesday night showed
everything that I felt
was lacking in the
draw at Blackburn.
It showed how much
the players really want
to fight and run for
each other against a
really good side.
I said to the players
before the game
that people have
questioned their
togetherness and
mentality, but I was
really pleased with
how they responded
to that. I don’t think
anybody could doubt
the resilience and
06 « SAINTS « we march on
character on display
against Coventry.
We played some
really good football,
especially in the
first half, and I think
we should’ve had
one or two more
goals because there
were some really
outstanding passages
of play at times that
we didn’t quite convert
into clear-cut chances
to score.
Sometimes you
have to respect the
opposition you’re up
against, and Coventry
did have a spell in the
second half where they
pulled a goal back and
made us suffer a bit.
They’re a team who
have been flying in
the second half of
the season, with real
attacking threat in
the creativity and
goalscorers they have,
but we limited them
to only two shots on
target in the game,
which is really unusual
for them.
That underlines how
well we defended.
I wrote in my
programme notes on
Tuesday how pleased

“I believe our performance on
Tuesday night showed everything
that I felt was lacking in the
draw at Blackburn. It showed how
much the players really want
to fight and run for each other
against a really good side.”
I was with the clean
sheet at Blackburn, but
that we needed that
defensive resilience to
be coupled with the
attacking threat we’ve
shown in countless
games this season,
and I felt we were
much closer to getting
the balance right
against Coventry.
Now we have to keep
building on that.
The midweek results
showed yet again how
unpredictable this
league is, and I’m sure
there are still many
more twists and turns
to come in the final
three weeks of the
season.
As I’ve said before, all
we can do is give our
very best to win as
many of our remaining
games as we possibly
can and see where it
takes us.
Tonight we face
familiar opposition in
Watford, with this being
our fourth meeting
this season, but every
game is different and
there has definitely
been a change in
their approach under
interim head coach
Tom Cleverley.
Tom was a top player
who will know the
players well and
command their
respect in the dressing
room. They’ve played
really well in his first
few games in charge,
so we know we can’t
read too much into
our previous games
against them this
season.
At the end of the day
it’s up to us to bring our
best level. If we can do
that, I strongly believe
we can beat anybody
in this division.
PUMA OFFICIALLY
BECOMES A SAINT
Southampton Football
Club and PUMA have
agreed a multi-year
partnership that will see
the iconic sportswear
brand become the club's
Official Kit Partner from
the 2024/25 season
onwards. This will be the
first time the club has
worked in partnership
with PUMA in its 138-year
history.
The four-year deal will
see the sportswear giant
provide bespoke playing
kits for all teams within
the club, right through
from the Men’s and
Women’s First Teams to
the Academy. This will
also include all training
and replica wear for fans.
All kits for the 2024/25
season, along with
training wear, travel wear
and accessories will be
revealed this summer.
The partnership comes
at an exciting time for the
club, with both its Men’s
and Women’s First Teams
on the promotion hunt in
their respective leagues.
An announcement
was first teased during
Tuesday evening’s Men’s
First Team game against
Coventry City. Eagle-eyed
fans will have spotted a
few hidden clues in the
build-up to the match
across social media,
as well as a few hidden
within St Mary’s Stadium.
PUMA also created a oneof-a-kind
pair of football
boots to celebrate the
partnership (pictured),
which were worn by
Saints star and PUMA
Athlete, Adam Armstrong,
during the game.
Now, the club will be
auctioning the boots for
one lucky fan to win, with
proceeds going to Saints
Foundation. The boots
will be available to bid
on via the club’s auction
website.
Phil Parsons, CEO of
Southampton Football
Club said: “We’re thrilled
to announce this new
long-term partnership
with PUMA. It was
important for us to find a
like-minded partner that
could not only deliver
on creating bespoke kits
that align with our strong
identity but is also able
to create a high-quality
range of products for our
fans.
“We look forward to
working closely with
PUMA on a wide variety of
projects over the coming
years in order to build
upon the success we are
having as a club, both on
and off the pitch.”
Bas van den Bemt,
Managing Director
of PUMA UKI said:
“We’re delighted to be
partnering with such
a prestigious club like
Southampton for the
first time. We’re excited
to be joining the club
on their journey back to
the top flight of English
football. Partnering with a
forward-thinking club like
the Saints matches our
identity and strategy for
the future.”

SAINTS IN
INTERNATIONAL
ACTION
Six of Southampton
FC Women’s players
were called up for their
countries in the final
international break of
the season, including
a milestone moment
for goalkeeper Kayla
Rendell.
Despite being initially
selected for England
Under-23s, Rendell was
drafted into the senior
squad for the first time
in her career as she
became the first Saints
player to be featured
in an England Women
senior team.
She gained valuable
experience with the
squad as qualification
for the 2025
Women’s European
Championships began
for Sarina Wiegman’s
side. Rendell watched
from the bench as the
Lionesses drew 1-1 with
Sweden at Wembley
Stadium, before they
beat the Republic of
Ireland on the road.
Elsewhere in Euros
qualifying, Laura
Rafferty captained her
country once again
as Northern Ireland
took three points from
Bosnia & Herzegovina
with a 3-1 victory.
Rafferty played the
entirety of her nation’s
first two matches, as
she also helped keep
a clean sheet in a
goalless draw with
Malta.
Alice Griffiths also
featured in qualifying,
as she made her
sixth international
appearance for Wales
as a late substitute
in their 4-0 win over
Croatia at Wrexham’s
STōK Cae Ras Stadium.
She then watched
from the bench in
the second game as
Cymru dominated
Kosovo to earn
maximum points from
their opening qualifying
games.
Finally, at Under-23
level, the trio of Ella
Morris, Lucia Kendall
and Molly Pike were
called up for the final
camp of the season
Alice Griffiths
Kayla Rendell
which included a
friendly against
Sweden.
Morris played the full 90
minutes and assisted
England’s opening goal,
teeing up Liverpool’s
Missy Bo Kearns to set
the Young Lionesses
on their way to a 3-1
victory. Kendall came
off the bench in the
closing stages as a late
sub, while Pike watched
on from the sidelines at
AFC Telford’s New Bucks
Head Stadium.

THE BOND BETWEEN WILL SMALLBONE AND
SOUTHAMPTON KEEPS GETTING STRONGER.
WE’VE BEEN THROUGH A LOT TOGETHER, NOT
Smallbone ???
celebrates his early
opener against West Brom in November
There’s no place
like home for Will
Smallbone.
The 24-year-old has
been representing
Southampton since
the age of eight and a
fan his whole life, but
last season saw him
take in a change of
scene.
He was never quite a
regular in the Premier
League, especially
after suffering a
serious knee injury
in January 2021 that
kept him sidelined
for nine months,
understandably
stunting his progress.
It necessitated a
14 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
loan move, as the
Basingstoke boy
spread his wings for
the first time, fending
for himself at Stoke in
the Championship.
Playing in 43 of the
Potters’ 46 league
games, he returned
battle-hardened
to the rigours of
Saturday-Tuesday-
Saturday football.
When new manager
Russell Martin made
it clear last summer
that he was a big
part of his plans,
Smallbone could not
wait to come home.
Nine months on, the
boss has stayed true
to his word. Only the
two Armstrongs, Adam
and Stuart, have
surpassed Smallbone’s
41 appearances in
all competitions
this season.
“I’ve really enjoyed it,”
he grins. “I think last
year was very good for
me to go out on loan
to play some games,
and then to come back
this year and play a
big part in the season
has been unreal for
me – something that
I’ve always dreamed
of, and to actually be
doing it feels amazing.”
Smallbone is described
by his manager as
a “players’ player” –
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 15
someone appreciated
more by his
teammates than those
watching from afar.
He brings a calmness
to Saints’ midfield, a
rare ability to dictate
the pace of play.
His athleticism has
improved, but it his
brain that moves
quickest. Smallbone
often looks to be a step
ahead of the rest.
During pre-season,
one of the questions
put to many of Saints’
new recruits was
about which player
had impressed them
the most. Smallbone
was a popular choice.
“I think everyone
wants to get the
respect of everyone
they play with,” he
says, modestly. “It’s
nice getting it from
elsewhere, from
external sources, but
the people that you
see day to day and
the people that you
work with day to day
that you’re on the pitch
with, if they recognise
what you bring to
the team, I think that
probably means
the most to you.”
Maybe it is his ability
to do the simple
things well, acting as
a facilitator for his
teammates, that has
made him a target
for social media
trolls when Saints
haven’t won games.
Maybe he should
shoot more from 30
yards, or take on three
players more often.
Maybe it is his
unassuming character,
his reticence to
fame or that he’s
Saints’ best Academy
graduate since James
Ward-Prowse.
Maybe wearing the
same number on his
back that the departed
skipper wore for eight
seasons attracts
unfair comparisons.
Maybe he should be
scoring from freekicks
like JWP.
Maybe it’s just that he
has no hair. Smallbone
was diagnosed with
alopecia in 2021,
something he wonders
might have been
linked to the stress
On target again from close range
in January’s victory at Swansea
of the injury, and is
now an ambassador
for Alopecia UK.
Maybe that’s it. That
he stands out on
the pitch. Whatever
the reason, Saints’
longest-serving and
least-deserving player
was recently forced to
deactivate his Twitter
account after being
bombarded with
hateful messages.
“I think everyone’s got
an opinion on Twitter,”
he shrugs. He can
literally laugh it off
now, but that wasn’t
always the case –
nor should it be.
“It’s tough. It’s not nice
for me to read, but
it’s almost harder for
16 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
the people around
me that love me, that
want to help me and
fight for me, but they
can’t, because there’s
nothing they can say.
“It’s not nice to see,
but they’re all very
supportive, very
good for me, and
I can’t thank each
of them enough.
“Anyone can create
any account and
pretend to be a Saints
fan or whatever, and
say whatever makes
them feel better.
“For me it was better to
just come off it and not
listen to it, and focus
on playing football.”
It says a lot about
Smallbone’s maturity
that he doesn’t tarnish
the fans with the
same brush. They
are separate. In fact,
after the abuse that
he received in late
February, after three
successive defeats,
it was the club’s
supporters who helped
pick him back up.
Another ally was Martin,
who launched an
impassioned defence
of his midfielder in
his pre-match press
conference ahead
of the Birmingham
away game at the
end of that week.
"I don't like social media
for that reason,” Martin
fumed. “It has become
a cesspit of negativity
and toxicity and a

place where people
feel they can say
something they would
"I am not on it, but
I have been made
aware of it and some
of the stuff I have seen,
I just don't understand
what human being
says those things.
"There are a lot of,
for want of a better
word, idiots and
unhappy people
that want to project
their unhappiness on
other people.
"It is to someone
who, if you are a
loves.
has been through
to get to this point.
"I believe Will does
have a strong sense
of self with what he
has been through, so I
don't worry about Will."
One particularly vile
comment referenced
cancer – even more
disturbing given
one of Smallbone’s
teammates, David
Brooks, had to
overcome that himself.
When Saints did make
the trip to St Andrew’s
that week, Smallbone
was serenaded by
Saints’ travelling fans
and produced a
man-of-the-match
performance, proving
Martin was right not
to worry about his
headspace, as his
team triumphed 4-3
in an epic encounter.
Brooks, who scored
the goal of the game,
finished second in the
poll to crown Saints’
star man that day.
Some things are just
written in the stars.
“We all support
Will and some of
the comments are
absolutely disgusting,”
Brooks said, offering
a teammate’s
perspective. “It’s just
one of those where,
if those people do
support Southampton,
you don’t really
want them in any
part of the club.
“There are obviously a
lot of stupid comments
you see online
and a lot of wishful
thinking from horrible
individuals, but it’s
one of those things.
They wouldn’t say it to
your face, and they’re
just uneducated and
a bit thick, probably,
so just take no
notice of them.”
“It’s a weird one,
because it went
from being such a
bad week to such a
good one in such a
short space of time,”
Smallbone reflects.
“I guess that’s just
football – one week
you could be the hero,
the next week you
could be the villain,
but I had such good
support around me.
My girlfriend was
unbelievable, I have
to say, and obviously
my family and friends
as well, they’re all very
supportive of me, and
the teammates, the
manager as well.
“Lastly the fans. When
we got to Birmingham,
the support I had
was unbelievable
and something that
I’ll never forget.”
At the end of the game,
Martin playfully pushed
Smallbone towards
the away end, keen for
him to take the glory
for himself for once.
“The fans were brilliant
for me – especially
on social media,” he
laughs at the irony. “I’ve
seen a few different
bits where they’re all
very supportive, and
I’m very thankful for
them, and that was
a moment that I’ll
always have. I’ll have
to work on the bumps
Manager and captain were keen for Smallbone to have
his moment in front of the away fans at Birmingham
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 19
Celebrating with Kyle Walker-Peters after
David Brooks’s goal at The Hawthorns
(fist pumps to the
crowd), but I’ll leave
that to the gaffer!”
If anything, you get
the sense this delicate
situation has actually
strengthened the bond
between Smallbone
and his club.
The match-going
fans have responded
in his time of need,
and the influential
midfielder, who
describes St Mary’s
as “an unbelievable
place” is more driven
than ever to reward
that support with a
promotion party at the
end of the season.
“I always look forward
to the home games,
and we seem to
always get a full
crowd as well, which
is probably quite rare
in the Championship,”
he ponders.
“It’s honestly such a
great feeling to go
out and play in front
of that. It’s what I’ve
always dreamed
of doing, and to
actually be doing
it feels a bit surreal,
but the atmosphere
that we create and
how many fans we
get in the stadium
is unbelievable.
“It’s something that I’ve
always dreamed of
growing up. I don’t think
I ever wanted to go on
loan before – I have to
say Stoke were brilliant
for me, but my goal
was always to come
back here and to play
for Southampton, the
team that I’ve come
through the Academy
for and the team
that I’ve supported
growing up. It does
mean a lot to me to be
playing every week.
“It would be
unbelievable,” he
says of promotion.
“From day one in preseason,
everyone’s
come in with the goal
to go straight back
up, and I think we’ve
put ourselves in with
a great opportunity
to do that. With a few
big games to come,
hopefully we can do it.”

AMO-AMEYAW NOMINATED
FOR PL2 PLAYER OF THE MONTH
After playing a key
part in Southampton
Under-21s’ recent form,
youngster Sam Amo-
Ameyaw has been
shortlisted for Premier
League 2’s March
Player of the Month
award.
Saints’ Under-21s went
unbeaten in March
with a draw and two
dominant victories,
which saw them move
up the table into the
PL2 play-off positions.
Amo-Ameyaw, in
particular, impressed
with two goals and
three assists in those
three games, scoring
against Stoke City and
Crystal Palace.
Adam Asghar’s side
started March with
a battling 1-1 draw
against West Bromwich
Albion, before they beat
Stoke 5-1 at Staplewood
with Amo-Ameyaw
rounding off the scoring
in the closing stages.
A week later, Saints
dispatched Crystal
Palace with a 4-0
win as Amo-Ameyaw
notched the game’s
third goal in between
assists for Luke Pearce
and Sonnie Davis – the
latter being teed up
for the second goal in
consecutive matches.
It’s the 17-year-old’s
first nomination for
the league’s monthly
individual accolade, as
he has stood out since
returning to the Under-
21s side more regularly
in recent weeks.
Amo-Ameyaw is one
of eight nominees that
completes the shortlist
for March.
before the U18s stars
coached small teams
in a No Room For
Young participants
were given
additional credit
for demonstrating
behaviours that
showed respect,
teamwork, before
the tournament
finished with a medal
presentation from the
Players, coaches and
participants all had an
enjoyable experience,
while highlighting such
a vital message.
Saints’ youngsters will
support the No Room
at their next home
games, with the Under-
WATFORD AT WAR
40
blast from
the past
ON THE
ROAD WITH
THE SAINTS
BY BARRY WEBB
APRIL 13TH SEEMS TO HAVE BROUGHT
ME GOOD FORTUNE IN THE PAST AND
TODAY WE FACE WATFORD – FOR THE
FOURTH TIME THIS SEASON – 21 YEARS
TO THE DAY AFTER WE PLAYED THEM
IN THE 2003 FA CUP SEMI-FINAL.
But before recalling
that semi-final win,
let’s remind ourselves
and the visiting fans
of some not-so-good
fortune: in the 1980/81
season, the Saints
defeated Watford 4-0
at The Dell in the first
leg of a second round
Brett Ormerod leaps to put the
Saints on the way to the final.
League Cup tie. But,
remarkably, the Saints
lost 7-1 in the second
leg (7-5 on aggregate).
And so to 2003: at that
time semi-finals were
played on neutral
grounds and our route
to the final in Cardiff
found us playing
Watford at Villa Park –
an away game for both
clubs. The other semifinal
was between
Arsenal and Sheffield
United and I was
among many Saints
fans who were – a little
uncharacteristically –
wishing Sheffield United
well on that day.
As with any semi-final,
emotions are a mix of
hope, anticipation and
apprehension for both
sides: the atmosphere
in Villa Park was loud
and raucous across
both sets of supporters.
All my family were there
although for reasons
I can’t recall we were
not all seated together:
I was with my Dad
who had followed his
hometown club for
decades and who was
responsible for my love
of the club.
This was the Saints lineup
on that day:
Paul Jones, Paul Telfer,
Claus Lundekvam,
Michael Svensson,
Wayne Bridge, Matt
Oakley, Fabrice
Fernandes, Anders
Svensson, Chris
Marsden, Brett
Ormerod, James
Beattie.
Among the substitutes
were Rory Delap
who came on for
Anders Svensson on
78 minutes; and Jo
Tessem replaced Brett
Ormerod in the 90th
minute.
For me the best report
of the match was
compiled by club
historian Duncan Holley
for Match Of The New
34 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 35
Millennium (Hagiology
publishing, 2016, edited
by David Bull and Barry
Webb).
In summary, Ormerod
put the Saints ahead
two minutes before
the half-time interval.
In the 79th minute the
lead was doubled with
a goal which seemed
to have been scored by
Beattie, but which was
later attributed as an
own-goal to Watford’s
Paul Robinson. Not that
it really mattered to us
ecstatic Saints fans: we
were edging closer to
the FA Cup final.
When Marcus Gayle
pulled a goal back
three minutes from fulltime
our nerves were
not too much on edge;
we might have felt a
tad apprehensive but
we knew the Saints had
played well enough
to win and march on
to the final in Cardiff
which we now knew
James Beattie in the tangle in the goalmouth which brought our
second goal. (Echo photo)
would be against
Arsenal.
All away supporters
have their own
personal memories
of their day and I am
no exception. At halftime
my Dad and I
had made our way to
the gents toilet along
with many others as
queues formed. It is
a visit which leaves
me smiling even now:
Dad was wearing his
Job done and smiles all round: Chris Marsden with Gordon Strachan,
while Paul Jones and Fabrice Fernandes hug in the background.
replica Saints shirt
which he had been
given on his 80th
birthday in 1999 and
printed on the back
was GRANDAD 80. As
he was standing there
“using the facilities”,
a voice behind us in
the queue called out,
“Hurry up, Grandad!”
To which he replied
instantly: “There’s no
rush. I’ve waited a long
time to be here!” It was
27 years since we had
reached the FA Cup
final.
I opened this article
by mentioning good
fortune: well, the semifinal
took place on
Sunday 13th April 2003
and, continuing my
personal theme, it was
two years later on that
very date that my first
grandson was born:
Happy 19th birthday
for today, Lewis!

Back in February 1926
a meeting, chaired
by Saints director
George Muir was
convened with the
purpose of forming
a Southampton FC
Supporters Club.
Written into the rules
was the aim “to create,
develop and persuade
supporters to take a
more lively interest in
the doings of the club
and to offer strenuous
Six months later, at its
club to help purchase
players. Pre-war
arrivals paid for by
money raised by the
fans were Dougal and
Hood from Clyde, White
from Hearts, Ruddy
and Neal from Derby,
Mayer from Stoke –
and many more.
As the club’s finances
became more perilous
in the 1930s, the money
that came from the
supporters was even
more vital. For example,
£620 was handed
over for a new gym,
recreation and billiards
room to be built. All
the footballs used
during the season
were paid for by the
Supporters Club who
also bought Season
Tickets and then resold
them to their members
at reduced or easy
payment rates. They
also lobbied for the
introduction of a 6d
admission (2.5p in
today’s money) for
the unemployed while
also financing the
Saints “B” team. The
club directors were
36 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 37
understandably very
grateful and presented
the supporters club
with a flag with the
club’s crest and the
slogan “to help not
hinder” embroidered
in the middle. It was
flown on matchdays.
After the war,
the sponsorship
continued and in
1951 the organisation
celebrated its silver
jubilee by publishing
a handsome 60-page
“souvenir history”
brochure. Soon after
Ted Bates became
manager in 1955, he
was desperate to
sign Jimmy Shields
from Sunderland but
had no money. The
Supporters Club lent
him £1,000 to make
the deal happen and
as Ted acknowledged
in his foreword to The
Alphabet of the Saints
he was very relieved
when Jimmy justified
the expenditure by
scoring 18 goals in
his first season.
For a short time,
however, the
relationship between
the Football Club and
the Supporters Club
soured, and it was
something of a surprise
to most when, at the
end of the 1960/61
season, the Echo
made the following
announcement
on behalf of the
Saints directors:
“Southampton FC
have severed their
connections with
the supporters club
because of the manner
in which the affairs
have been conducted
during the past
year and the almost
complete lack of
support which the club
has received in this
period. Between 1950
and now only £10,682
has been received
whereas Norwich
have received £24,000
during the past year
and Bournemouth
have had £12,000”.
The Echo also pointed
out even Salisbury
had received £11,000
during the previous
year. A lot of acrimony
followed but there was
to be no reproachment
between the two
parties and the Saints
Board subsequently
backed the creation
of a new fans group
to be called the “Dell
Supporters Club”
and for many years
the two associations
existed side by side,
neither acknowledging
each other. The Saints
Football Supporters
had leased from the
football club the big
house in Archers Road
which was next to The
Dell, and they remained
there as something
of a thorn in the side
of the football club.
Southampton FC were
delighted when the
lease eventually expired
and they were able
to reclaim it for their
“official” supporters.
WATFORD
AT WAR
BY DAVID BULL
IT WAS 1916/17, THE SECOND SEASON
OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR’S MAKE-
DO LEAGUES. SOUTHAMPTON
AND WATFORD WERE TWO OF THE
FOUR PROVINCIALS, ALONG WITH
LUTON AND PORTSMOUTH, IN THE
SOUTH’S STRONGEST LEAGUE,
THE LONDON COMBINATION.
38 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
Even with the benefit
of Duncan Holley’s
redoubtable collection,
images of that season
are hard to come
by. Yet each of the
Saints’ games vs
Watford threw up a
photo that has been
much-featured by
us club historians.
Before I get round to
the story behind those
two photos, however,
I want to hark back to
1914/15, that season
when professional
football played on
against a cacophony
of protests from The
Times newspaper and
amateur sportsmen.
Our story concerns
George Mounsey. He
had been playing as
an amateur parttimer
for Willington
Athletic, his home-town
club, in the Northern
Football Alliance.
Offered Southern
League football at
Southampton, he duly
married and brought
his bride Matilda south
in May 1914. He was
effectively signing to
be the Saints’ deputy
centre-half. His firstteam
opportunity
came on 17th October,
with the War barely
eight weeks old. Yet
when Watford came
to The Dell, a fortnight
later, George was back
in the Reserves and
playing for them at
Watford’s Cassio Road
ground.
He had a tough match,
being laid out by a
ball to the stomach,
requiring artificial
respiration from the
trainer, and then
receiving a kick on
Flanked by director George Muir, who’d played in the Saints’ firstever
match in 1885, and by player-trainer Bert Lee (right), the 11
players are, left to right: Standing: Mitton, Frisby, Ellerington,
Wood, Campbell, Tomkins. Seated: Kimpton, Dominy, Slade, Milne, Blake.

Kimpton (in foreground)
goalkeeper Wood and the tall
Campbell, plus the official at
the far post.
the knee – all in the
first half. He retired
with knee-strain in
the 80th minute.
Despite stomach-pain
on the Sunday, he
nevertheless reported
to the ground the next
day. He was excused
training.
On Tuesday morning,
he died in his bed.
The examining doctor
concluded that the
cause of death was
heart-failure, which
could not be attributed
to his football injuries.
The inquest jury so
found. Whatever,
Watford and seven
other Southern League
clubs donated to a
fund for George’s
widow. Her husband’s
death was, if I might risk
sounding flippant, the
Saints’ first of this war.
By the time Watford
came again to The Dell
on 2nd September 1916,
to open the London
Combination season,
eight Southamptonrelated
soldiers had
fallen, two of them
on the first day of the
Somme.
This opening fixture
reflected how the
Saints would fulfill
their war-time
commitments. Thus
their line-up consisted
of five registered Saints
and six guests. The
former comprised Sid
Kimpton and the four
men – Alec Campbell,
Arthur Dominy, Joe
Blake and Arthur Wood
– who would play for
the club both before
and after this war.
Three of the six guests
would be around for
a while. Bristol Rovers’
Joe Milne, with 27
appearances, would
become the season’s
most frequent guest,
with Eric Tomkins from
Northampton Town
next in line on 24, while
Bill Ellerington would
acquire a special place
in the club’s history by
fathering a son who
would become a major
player for the Saints,
after guesting during
the next World War.
Don Slade was an
ex-Saint who’d joined
Fulham in 1914 but
whose war-time guestspots
would include
Southampton. James
Mitton from Stockport
County and Walter
Frisby, an Air Mechanic
quixotically listed as
being from Leicester
Rugby Club, were, by
comparison, mere
passers-by.
Watford had won
the Southern League
in 1915. Uninhibited
by such reputation
and propelled by a
Dominy hat-trick, the
hosts swept to a 5-0
win. They would now
have a patchy run
until 11th November
when they began a
half-decent mini-run
with a 0-0 draw at
Watford, from which
a rare action shot
survives. Southampton
and Watford would
finish ninth and 11th,
respectively, in this
Combination but would
be duly kicked out by
the haughty Londoners,
along with their fellowprovincials.
Valérien Ismaël’s
sacking by Watford
last month leaves
the Hertfordshire club
looking for their 11th
head coach since
2018 and eighth
since the end of the
2020/21 season.
Since Sean Dyche
left Vicarage Road in
2012, Gianfranco Zola,
Giuseppe Sannino,
Oscar Garcia, Billy
McKinlay, SlaviIša
Jovanović, Quique
Sánchez Flores, Walter
Mazzarri, Marco Silva,
Javi Gracia, Nigel
Pearson, Vladimir
Ivić, Xisco Muñoz,
Claudio Ranieri, Roy
Hodgson, Rob Edwards,
Slaven Bilić and Chris
Wilder have all had
spells in charge.
Ismaël, who arrived
at Vicarage Road
following a spell in
Turkey with Besiktas,
previously led Barnsley
to the Championship
play-offs in 2021. But
he lasted only eight
months at West
Bromwich Albion before
leaving in February
2022. He joined
Watford last May.
Following Ismaël’s exit,
Tom Cleverley was
named interim head
coach. The former
Manchester United and
England midfielder, 34,
had been coaching
Watford’s Under-18s
after his retirement
from playing last year.
The Hornets faced
a tough finish to the
season under Cleverley,
with eight of their nine
remaining games
coming against teams
in the top half of the
table. However, he led
Watford to victory over
Birmingham City in his
first match in charge
before successive
draws against
promotion-chasing
Leeds United, West
Brom and Preston North
End. The 0-0 stalemate
with PNE at Vicarage
Road on Saturday left
Watford in 14th, nine
points off the relegation
places and 16 off the
top six. The Hornets
travelled to Ipswich
Town on Wednesday.
THE BOSS:
TOM
CLEVERLEY
Basingstoke-born Tom
Cleverley was named interim
head coach of Watford last
month. Cleverley was 20 when
he first arrived at Watford on
loan from Manchester United
in 2009, with the midfielder
scoring on his debut and
eventually being named Player
of the Season. He went on to
win the Premier League title
with the Red Devils in 2013, as
well as earning 13 England caps
and playing at the London
2012 Olympics for Great Britain.
During his stint at Old Trafford,
Cleverley also spent time on
loan at Leicester City, Wigan
Athletic and Aston Villa. In 2017,
Cleverley re-joined Watford
on loan from Everton before
making the switch permanent,
and he ended his career with
the Hornets last summer after
playing 181 times for the club,
scoring 19 times. Cleverley
remained at Vicarage Road
as boss of the club’s Under-
18s prior to taking temporary
charge of the first team.
ONE TO WATCH:
YASER
ASPRILLA
A scorer of spectacular goals,
Colombian Yaser Asprilla
has been a creative force for
Watford this season. As well as
finding the net six times, the
forward has also chipped in
with five assists. The 20-yearold
joined the Hornets in
November 2021, spending the
remainder of that season with
Envigado before linking up with
his new club in the summer of
2022. Asprilla scored his first
goal in English football in April
2023 in a 3-2 home defeat
to Huddersfield Town and
made 39 appearances in all
competitions last season. But
it’s this term where he’s really
found his feet and he bagged
two stunning goals in a matter
of days against Norwich City
and Rotherham United in
February. Capable of playing
on the wing or more centrally,
Asprilla has been capped
four times by his country,
making his debut in 2018. It’s
no surprise to see several top
clubs reportedly keeping tabs
on the starlet.
THE LOCAL
LOWDOWN
WE ASKED OPPOSITION EXPERT ANDREW FRENCH
FROM THE WATFORD OBSERVER TO PREVIEW
WATFORD’S VISIT TO ST MARY’S FROM THE HORNETS’
POINT OF VIEW...
With four games to go
and Watford sitting
in mid-table, how
would you sum up the
season?
On the whole, I think it’s
been more or less what
was expected: very
mid-table. We flirted
with the relegation
zone early on, then
we got very close to
the play-off places.
But our performances
overall have been
inconsistent, and
before a ball was
kicked I was predicting
we’d finish somewhere
between 12th and 15th,
and that looks likely.
Valérien Ismaël lost
his job last month.
What was the general
feeling around his
departure, and why
didn’t it work for him?
Ismaël did a very
good job of changing
the squad mindset
and instilling a better
attitude, and towards
the end of last year he
46 « SAINTS « we march on
looked like he might
exceed expectations
as we were knocking
on the door of the top
six. But then it all went
wrong. We still haven’t
won at home since
November 28th, we
stopped scoring goals
and we became ultracautious
to the point of
negativity.
I think he made a
mistake not bringing
more than one player
in during the January
window, and his
safety-first approach
to games meant we
spent too much time
on the back foot.
Despite Watford’s welldeserved
reputation
for being quick to sack
head coaches, the
club gave Ismaël more
time than most but, by
when he was let go,
the fans were generally
in agreement with the
decision.
Tom Cleverley has
stepped in as interim
head coach. Watford
were four games
unbeaten ahead of
Wednesday’s trip
to Ipswich, holding
a couple of the
promotion chasers
along the way.
How have recent
performances been?
It’s been chalk and
cheese to what went
before. Very much
on the front foot, not
excessive amounts of
tiki-taka in defence
and the desire to win
games rather than
trying not to lose them
is back. We could have
beaten Leeds, we
should have beaten
West Brom, and
Preston lured us into
a trap of continually
running into their low
block. Nonetheless,
no defeats in four is a
decent start and fans
have certainly enjoyed
the more attacking
nature of Tom’s
approach, as well as
the switch from 4-3-3
to 3-4-1-2.
we march on » SAINTS » 47
Is Cleverley (pictured)
a viable contender to
be the manager full
time, and is that his
intention?
He said from the start
he’d like the job full
time, but with the
caveat that for the
time being he’s just
focused on winning
as many of the nine
games that he had.
So far, this prolonged
interview is going
well, although he
could do with a home
win as it’s 11 league
games at Vicarage
Road without one. He
knows the club inside
out, he played with
a lot of the players,
he’s got tremendous
experience as a
player and if he got
the job there would
be continuity, which
is something the club
has lacked.
Who have been the
standout performers
this season?
The captain, Wesley
Hoedt, has had a
very good season.
Strong leader on
the pitch, reads the
game well and has
an exceptional range
of passing with his
left foot. Some of the
younger players have
come to the fore: Ryan
Andrews was only just
making his league
debut a year ago but
now he’s a regular with
his pace and strength
on the right flank,
which has earned him
an England Under-20
call-up.
Yáser Asprilla has been
one of the bright spots
as he has such flair
and natural talent, and
on his day, Ismaël Koné
looks a class above
Championship level.
The fear for Watford
fans is how many of
that last trio will be
at the club come the
start of next season.
How do you see the
game going today?
Hopefully better
than the FA Cup
replay, when Watford
appeared to simply
be fulfilling a fixture
and Saints ran all over
them. Cleverley has
reignited the squad,
got the attitude back
on track and, because
he is looking to prove
his credentials, he’s
ensuring the season
doesn’t just peter out. I
could see us grabbing
a point.
