We didn’t get the result we wanted against 

Portsmouth on Saturday, but I honestly believe 

we couldn’t have given any more. 

Their manager, John Mousinho, was honest 

enough to admits afterwards that he thought we 

deserved to win the game. 

That comes from the side that is set to win the 

league and has been consistently the best in the 

division, so it shows the levels we reached. 

We didn’t manage to get the second goal and get 

the win the performance merited but we have to 

keep believing that playing at that standard for the 

remainder of the season – however long that is – 

will deliver us the prize we all want. 

And we also have to believe – and firmly do – 

that nothing is decided in terms of the automatic 

promotion places. 

Football constantly shows – at every level – that 

unexpected results occur and when any team 

needs to win a game, it’s never guaranteed. All we 

can do is try to take a maximum points from our 

remaining three games and hope Derby have one 

more slip-up. 

If not, then we have to back ourselves to win 

however many games are needed to go up via 

another route. 

That’s for another day, though, with our total focus 

on tonight and making sure we beat Shrewsbury 

Town. They need points for themselves, of course, 

and I welcome manager Paul Hurst, his staff, 

players and all the travelling fans tonight for what 

we know will be a competitive game. 

But we know what we have to do and if we can 

win tonight to get back to within a point of Derby, 

anything can happen over the final two fixtures. 

We were, naturally, a bit flat after the game on 

Saturday, having given so much to win a game that 

would have kept our fate in our own hands. 

But my job is to lift everyone and get us going 

again and, rest assured, we will be ready tonight. 

My faith in these players has never wavered and I 

back them once more to get the result which will 

keep us very much in the hunt. 

It’s taken a huge collective effort to get us to this 

stage – baring in mind all the injury problems and 

other set-backs that we have had to deal with this 

season – but on an individual note, I would just 

like to add my congratulations to Josh Sheehan 

and Josh Dacres-Cogley for being named in the 

EFL League One Team of the Year. 

Both have been incredibly consistent and key 

players for us this season and thoroughly deserve 

their place in that line-up. 

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to 

thank you for your magnificent support against 

Portsmouth. To see the biggest crowd ever for this 

level at this stadium was an incredible sight and 

one not lost on any of us. 

Your backing was outstanding and certainly played 

a huge part in allowing us to recover from an early 

goal, take the fight to Pompey and at least get a 

point that could yet be important. 

We need you again tonight, to continue to lift, 

inspire and encourage us all. We’re still in this and 

still in it together.

campaign in style with a fun-packed End 

of Season Party in the Premier Suite at the 

Toughsheet Community Stadium last week! 

Hundreds of Wanderers’ fans attended the End of 

Season Party, with games, quizzes, raffles and fun 

had by all in attendance! 

First-team stars Aaron Collins, Josh Sheehan, Paris 

Maghoma and Victor Adeboyejo were on hand to 

join in with the festivities, signing autographs and 

posing for pictures with many of the young fans. 

With plenty of party dances and games to take part 

in - as well as rodeo football and club mascot Lofty 

the Lion making an appearance - it was a fantastic 

evening of celebrations for our young Wanderers 

and their families.

Currently on loan at Wanderers from Swansea 

City with a spell at Peterborough United inbetween, 

the flying wing-back is impressing 

down Wanderers’ left after arriving at the club 

in January. 

But it was in Shropshire where Nat had his first 

taste of professional football when signing for the 

Shrews in January 2021 from Manchester City. 

Making 58 appearances for Salop, and scooping 

the Young Player of the Year award in his first 

season with the club, it’s fair to say that Nat made a 

big impact at the Croud Meadow Stadium. 

Looking back on his spell at tonight’s opponents, 

Ogbeta makes it clear of the impact that his time at 

Shrewsbury had on his career. 

“It was really key for me as it was my first 

experience in professional football,” he said. 

“It was during lockdown, so it was slightly strange 

in empty stadiums, but it allowed me to become 

comfortable as to what League One was like. 

“Playing in front of no fans, weirdly, was a good 

way for me to start my career, as I knew I could 

play at that level. Then, when the fans did return, I 

had a lot of confidence. 

“Shrewsbury was really good for me and gave 

me the opportunity to show what I could do. I 

was playing academy football at Manchester 

City before that loan and it was more about the 

process, but Shrewsbury was all about results, 

results, results. 

“I really enjoyed it there, and the coaching team 

in Steve Cotterill and Aaron Wilbraham were 

good with me. The way Aaron believed in me was

special. It’s helped me to feel a lot more confident 

now as I continue my journey in professional 

football.” 

It didn’t take long for Ogbeta to endear himself to 

the Wanderers’ support when making an instant 

impact with a goal just minutes into his debut away 

at Carlisle. 

Now with a run of games under his belt in the last 

few weeks with six consecutive starts in Ian Evatt’s 

side, Nat spoke of the need to wait for his chance 

as he settled into life at the club. 

THE BELIEF IN THE BOYS 

IS REALLY STRONG AT 

THE MOMENT, AND I 

FEEL LIKE THAT IS KEY 

FOR US 

“When I arrived, the Gaffer told me to be patient as 

he had a plan for me because I had arrived here on 

the back of a long injury,” he said. 

“He wanted to make sure that when I played, I 

didn’t break down instantly. On the back of that, I 

now feel fit, I feel strong and I feel like I’m getting 

into the rhythm of it. 

“I’m used to the team now and the way we want to 

play, I’m comfortable in our system and I’m really 

enjoying my football right now.


“I’ve played in teams under people such as Russell 

Martin, Luke Williams and Darren Ferguson as well 

as coming through at Manchester City, who all like 

to play football, so our style suits me. 

“The way wing-backs are in our system, and the 

way the Gaffer wants us to play, is a big ask. It is a 

difficult role but it really has an effect on our games 

when you do it right and do it as the Gaffer wants 

us to do. 

“If you get into the right positions and do the work, 

you see the rewards in terms of goals and assists, 

and hopefully I can keep adding to that.” 

With the end of the season edging closer, 

Wanderers are starting to find form just at the right 

stage of the season. With wins over Reading and 

Bristol Rovers, as well as a draw with Portsmouth 

in a superb performance at the weekend, the 

wing-back believes the recent run of form can only 

benefit the squad as the season comes to a climax. 

“The belief in the boys is really strong at the 

moment, and I feel like that is key for us,” he said. 

“We have a great opportunity ahead of us. 

We’ve worked so hard throughout the 

season to get to this point and everyone is 

motivated to finish strong. 

“We know we’ve had a couple of moments 

where we haven’t taken potential opportunities, 

but now it’s all about seizing every moment. 

“We are motivated and in a good place. We have 

people coming back from injuries and competition 

for places is high, and you can see the desire and 

determination in training. We just have to focus on 

ourselves and keep believing.”

FROM THE ARCHIVES 

SEASON 2020/21 

Lying 19th in League Two at the end of 

January, Wanderers went on a run of 

just three defeats in 22 games to secure 

promotion back to League One after just 

one season in the basement division, in 

which all but two games were played in 

front of empty stadiums. 

One of those defeats came in the final 

home game against Exeter which left 

Wanderers needing to win on the final 

day of the season at Crawley to secure a 

promotion place. 

The result was never in doubt when first 

half goals from Antoni Sarcevic and Dapo 

Afolayan gave Bolton an early boost. 

Further goals from Eoin Doyle and Lloyd 

Isgrove confirmed victory, with Crawley 

getting a late consolation from Davide 

Rodari.

AS SALOP LOOK TO SECURE THEIR SKY BET 

LEAGUE ONE STATUS FOR ANOTHER SEASON. 

At the time of writing, Shrewsbury realistically 

just need to register one more win to ensure 

a ninth consecutive campaign in the third 

tier, which they could achieve before visiting 

Wanderers with a home game against 

Wycombe prior to their visit to the Toughsheet 

Community Stadium. 

Salop had originally appointed former Wanderers 

midfielder Matt Taylor as their Head Coach in 

the summer. Town’s start to the season could be 

described as hit-and-miss with three wins and 

three defeats in their opening six league games. 

That trend continued throughout Taylor’s time 

at the Croud Meadow Stadium with his team 

performing in erratic peaks and troughs, going 

on both winning and losing runs during his 

tenure without manging to find any real 

consistency or middle ground. 

Town were winless in seven throughout September 

and into the start of October before winning six 

out of nine in November and pushing Salop 

further up the table, which, in the bigger picture 

and with the use of hindsight, has made the 

difference of not finishing in or closer to the drop 

zone. 

Unfortunately for Taylor, that form wasn’t sustained 

as Shrewsbury recorded seven defeats in eight 

heading into the New Year and he was relieved of 

his duties with Town hovering above the relegation 

zone in 19th place. 

Just three days later, much to the delight of the 

Salop faithful, Paul Hurst returned to the club with 

the job of easing any relegation fears and driving 

Town up the table.

Hurst initially got the reaction he wanted 

from his group of players with an 

impressive 2-0 win away at Northampton 

Town and regaining that feel-good factor 

around Shropshire. 

At first glance, Shrewsbury haven’t hit the heights 

of what they had produced previously in the 

season in terms of a winning run of form but 

on the other hand, they haven’t suffered any 

damaging losing streaks either since Hurst’s 

appointment. 

Wins against Reading, Port Vale and Carlisle 

look to have been enough to keep them 

clear of danger but just as importantly, 

draws against the likes of promotion 

contenders Derby, Barnsley and Oxford 

will have no doubt been as vital and a 

sign that they will be no pushovers as 

visitors tonight.

As a player, Hurst was very much a one club 

man having played well over 400 times for 

Rotherham, with the only spell away being a 

short loan at Burton Albion. 

The earlier parts of his managerial career were 

spent as joint-manager with former teammate Rob 

Scott, firstly at Ilkeston Town where the pair guided 

them to a play-off winning season before making 

the move to Boston United where they repeated 

that feat with another promotion to the National 

League North. 

Grimsby Town came calling as they eyed up 

a return to the EFL and chose Hurst as their 

man. After four seasons and plenty of play-off 

heartbreak, the Mariners had their day in the sun at 

Wembley and Hurst was an EFL manager. 

In 2016, Hurst made the move to Shrewsbury in 

League One and it was in his second season in 

charge saw a campaign that nobody saw coming, 

despite the cruel ending. 

Salop’s season finished with two finals at Wembley 

in quick succession. Firstly, an EFL Cup final defeat 

against Lincoln City, before reaching the Play-Off 

final and suffering extra-time heartbreak against 

Rotherham United. 

Hurst’s biggest move of his career came on the 

back of that season with Ipswich Town in the 

Championship. After just five months, he was 

dismissed following an unsatisfactory start to the 

season. 

A return to Grimsby materialised after a brief stint 

at a Scunthorpe United in turmoil and although 

Hurst couldn’t prevent Grimsby dropping to the 

National League, he rallied the Mariners to go 

again and get back into the EFL at the first attempt. 

In January of 2024, Hurst received a hero’s 

welcome back to Shrewsbury Town with the 

memories of 2017-18 fuelling the hope that 

Shrewsbury can be fighting further up the table 

this time next season.

GAY MEADOW 

(SHREWSBURY TOWN) 

Gay Meadow was known locally to host fairs, 

carnivals and circuses for hundreds of years 

before becoming home to Shrewsbury Town 

in 1910. On the banks of the River Severn, 

Shrewsbury coracle maker Fred Davies, or a 

member of his family, would sit in a coracle 

during Town’s home matches to retrieve 

footballs kicked into the river until the ground 

closed in 2007. 

Wanderers made eight league visits to Gay 

Meadow, the first of which came in November 1971 

when Town won a Third Division fixture 1-0 thanks 

to an Alf Wood goal, with the striker netting 35 

league goals that season. 

April 1973 saw Wanderers register the first of four 

league wins at the ground. A Friday night fixture 

saw goals from John Byrom and Garry Jones 

(pictured) claim two vital points on the club’s 

march towards the championship. 

It wasn’t until October 1980 that Bolton again 

visited, this time at Second Division level, with a 

2-1 victory registering the first away victory since a 

trip to Manchester United in April 1979 and ending 

a 28-away game run without success. Mike Carter 

and Brian Kidd (pictured) netted for Bolton with 

player/manager Graham Turner scoring for Town.

Brian Kidd appeared for the last time for Bolton 

on the visit to Gay Meadow in November 1981, the 

former European Cup winner missing a penalty 

as the home side won 2-0. The highest scoring 

game between the sides was in December 1989 

when a 3-3 draw resulted with both sides back 

in the third tier, Bolton having to settle for a point 

after leading 2-0 at the interval. Steve Thompson 

grabbed a couple of goals with Tony Philliskirk 

scoring the other. Paul Gorman, David Moyes and 

future Wanderer John McGinlay scoring for the 

Shrews. 

The last two league visits to Gay Meadow by 

Wanderers ended in success. Stuart Storer 

scoring the only goal (pictured netting the winner) 

on the opening day of the 1990/91 season whilst 

in November 1991 a 3-1 win came courtesy of 

a Tony Philliskirk penalty along with goals from 

David Reeves and Tony Kelly, who was returning 

to his old stamping ground. 

In cup football Bolton made just one visit in 

a Second Round, first leg League Cup tie in 

September 1984. Goals from Jeff Chandler and 

George Oghani earning a 2-2 draw, with Bolton 

going through by winning the second leg 2-1 at 

Burnden. 

Since moving to the New Meadow, Wanderers 

have made four League visits, all at League One 

level, winning on three occasions - the first being 

in March 2017 when second half goals from 

Mark Beevers and Adam Le Fondre (pictured 

celebrating his goal) earned a 2-0 win. 

A last minute Dion Charles goal gave Bolton the 

points in January 2022 and earlier this season 

goals from Paris Maghoma (pictured scoring) 

and Aaron Morley secured the points. Bolton’s 

only league defeat at the New Meadow was in 

December 2022 when an injury time goal from 

Chey Dunkley gave the home side a 3-2 win. 

In cup football, Wanderers won a first round 

League Cup tie 3-1 in August 2013, Sanmi Odelusi 

scoring twice with his only goals for the club, the 

other coming from Rob Hall. In October 2020, 

Adam Senior scored his only goal for the club in a 

2-1 reverse in a Football League Trophy tie.

Ian Evatt made just one change to the starting side 

that took to the field at the Toughsheet against 

Reading, with Nathan Baxter returning to the team 

for the first time since the Barnsley home fixture in 

February. 

Wanderers took control of the game in the 

early moments and came close on a number of 

occasions to scoring the opening goal. 

Aaron Collins, returning to his former side after 

signing for Wanderers in January, was at the heart 

of the action in the opening half. 

The Welsh striker broke into space and it looked 

to be opening up for Aaron with Paris Maghoma 

looking for a pull back to apply the finish, but a 

vital block turned it behind for a corner. 

Despite being the dominant side in the first half, 

Matt Taylor’s men forced decent saves out of the 

returning Baxter either side of half-time.

First, Connor Taylor tried to beat the ‘keeper at 

his near post with a low effort before Baxter was 

forced into a wonderful save as Chris Martin’s 

effort looked to be finding the bottom corner, but 

he somehow got his hand to it at full stretch to 

claw the effort away. 

Wanderers had survived the early storm - and 

made it count through the returning man, Collins. 

George Thomason did brilliantly to thread a pass 

through to find Aaron, and the frontman produced 

a chipped finish over the keeper to send the 

travelling support wild. 

Matt Taylor’s men threw on substitutions as the 

game was drawing to a close, but it was Wanderers 

who found a way to seal victory from the penalty 

spot. 

Cameron Jerome did brilliantly to win the spotkick, 

and Morley picked up the ball and cooly sent 

Ward the wrong way to secure the points.

ANNUAL SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE AND THANKSGIVING 

THURSDAY 23RD MAY 6.30PM 

As we approach the end of the season, we are 

once again preparing for the Annual Service 

of Remembrance which will take place at the 

Toughsheet Community Stadium on Thursday 

23rd May starting pitchside at 6.30pm. 

This year feels particularly poignant as one of 

those who we shall remember is Iain Purslow, who 

sadly collapsed and subsequently died the day 

we played Cheltenham at home on Saturday 13th 

January. 

It is here we shall pause for a few moments as we 

remember our loved ones and lay a wreath on the 

pitch, thinking of all those whose ashes have been 

scattered here over this season. 

The service will then continue in the 1877 Suite 

with reflective music and during the evening, 

names of loved ones that have been inscribed in 

the Memorial Book or engraved on a Memorial 

brick during the past twelve months will be read 

out. 

All the names of loved ones will also be 

remembered from previous years as they will be 

displayed on a big screen in the room. 

Within the service, people will be invited to come 

forward and light candles in memory of their loved 

ones. 

The game was rightly stopped and abandoned 

that day under such tragic circumstances. What 

followed was an incredible out-pouring of love and 

support for all the family from fans not only here at 

Bolton, but across the whole nation. Tributes were 

paid by the Cheltenham fans as the match was 

re-scheduled and wreaths laid at different grounds 

to remember him. 

We were all reminded that day of the important 

things in life and stood together as one family. With 

that in mind the theme of our service this year will 

be One Family. 

You are very welcome to join us for this special 

service as we stand together as the BWFC family.

The Lancaster Whites Fan of the Year went to 

Wayne Machlachlan, while the Young Fan of the 

Year went to Jack Dawson.

GOLDEN GOAL WINNERS 

Golden Goal has again proved popular this 

season with us selling out almost every game, 

so we would like to thank you for your support - 

it really is appreciated by the Bolton Wanderers 

Development Association. 

What makes our day though is when our Golden 

Goal winners agree to having their photo taken 

and we hear a bit about them. 

The winner for the game versus Reading FC for 

our Easter Monday game was Steven Murphy of 

Breightmet, Bolton. 

Steven bought his lucky ticket, showing 10 minutes 

and 38 seconds, from Jacky in Bolton Stadium 

Hotel pre-match - as he always does. He called in 

to receive his £500 prize with his brother Thomas 

and was delighted to receive them from Jacky. 

Steven said he will treat Thomas first with his 

winnings and then spend some in the Club Shop. 

Here they are! 

Our Oxford United winner was Tommy Gordon 

of Hindley. He was just 10 seconds away at 

the previous game against Barnsley and was 

gutted, but he bought his ticket again the 

following match from our seller Jason outside 

the Club Shop, and was astounded when he 

opened it and found out he had the winning 

ticket with 18 minutes and 02 secs. 

Tommy, who was at the game with his son Richard, 

told him the good news and didn’t believe him at 

first but took this photo in the stands! 

Tommy has been a keen 

supporter of the Lotteries 

for many years, he is in the 

Lifeline and remembers 

buying these Golden Goal 

tickets at Burnden Park - he 

loves the nostalgia of them.
