UNITE FOR ACCESS
This evening we are celebrating
Level Playing Field’s ‘Unite For
Access’ campaign with a bespoke
edition of SAINTS.
Level Playing Field is the leading
charity advocating for disabled
sports fans in England and Wales,
and Unite For Access is an annual
period of inspiration and celebration
of good access and inclusion at
sports venues.
As a club, our focus is on raising
awareness and driving equality
for a more inclusive matchday
experience for disabled Saints fans.
As for the matchday programme,
we’ve already taken steps this
season by using a larger, readerfriendly
font, and tonight you’ll see
some of our regular pages have
been adapted to show our support
for the Unite For Access campaign.
We, as a club, believe football is for
everyone and want to help break
down any barriers that stop this
from being a reality.
Enjoy the programme, and please
take a minute to find out more
about Unite For Access inside.
DEAR SAINTS FANS, WELCOME BACK TO ST
MARY’S AS WE ROUND OFF A RUN OF THREE HOME
GAMES IN A WEEK WITH TONIGHT’S REARRANGED
FIXTURE AGAINST PRESTON NORTH END.
We welcome manager
Ryan Lowe, his staff
and players, and the
visiting supporters
who have made the
long journey south
from Lancashire.
We come into this
game following backto-back
home wins
over Coventry and
Watford, with the sole
target of making it
three on the bounce
this evening.
That would complete
a really productive
few days for us, but
06 « SAINTS « we march on
we know this will be a
tough test against a
side who make it really
difficult for every team
they play against.
They are a really
strong, physical team,
and we found it hard in
the game at Deepdale
back in October. In the
end, Gav’s come up
for a corner in the last
minute of stoppage
time to get us a really
important point.
Looking back, I think
that week in which
we scored a couple
of crucial late goals,
at Hull and Preston,
did a lot for the
belief, character and
togetherness in the
dressing room.
That was evident
once again on
Saturday with another
memorable moment
when Flynn Downes
scored a dramatic
late winner for us here
against Watford.
I don’t think it could’ve
fallen to a better
person – what a time
to score your first goal
at St Mary’s! I think
Flynn is the best in
the league for a lot of
reasons, and he really
deserved that moment
to be the hero.
The euphoria we all
felt in that moment
was something special
that will stay with us
for a long time, but I
was frustrated that it
came to that, because
it was a game we

“The euphoria we all felt in
that moment was something
special that will stay with
us for a long time, but I was
frustrated that it came to
that, because it was a game
we should’ve made a lot more
comfortable for ourselves.”
should’ve made a lot
more comfortable
for ourselves.
We had a brilliant
start – not just scoring
in the first minute of
the game, but the
way we played to
keep pushing and
get the second goal
before the midway
point of the first half.
From there we should
maintain that control.
You can’t come off it
for a second in this
league, but that’s
what we did after
we went 2-0 up.
To concede the
equaliser with five
minutes to go was a
massive setback, but
the reaction to that
disappointment was
amazing. The intensity
and energy to go and
get the winner at that
stage of the game
was incredible, but
that’s the level we
expect for 90 minutes.
I was keen to stress
to the players that we
couldn’t get too high
on the emotion of that
win, because there
was a lot we could
have done better and
a lot to improve ahead
of another quick
turnaround coming
into tonight’s game.
But the result puts us
in a better place than
we were before the
weekend, and tonight
is another opportunity
for us to strengthen
our position as the
only midweek game
in the Championship.
This schedule that we
have, with two extra
games to play, is going
to take a tremendous
collective effort from
everybody, including
you in the stands.
We saw on Saturday
the effect it has when
you are roaring us on
in the closing moments
of the game. Just as
I ask of the players,
that is the support
we need for the full
90 minutes, even
when we have scary
moments in the game.
I’ve always said there
will be twists and turns
and we saw that again
at the weekend. It’s
important we ignore
the outside noise, keep
playing our way and
continue the positive
momentum we’re
building in the final
weeks of the season.
Southampton defender
Kyle Walker-Peters has
been named in the
Sky Bet Championship
Team of the Season at
the EFL Awards.
The flying full-back,
who has excelled on
both flanks, took the
right-back slot in the
league’s prestigious allstar
XI for 2023/24.
Walker-Peters, who
celebrated his 27th
birthday on Saturday,
has contributed three
goals and two assists,
and helped Saints keep
11 clean sheets in the
league to date.
The England
international was
the only Saint to be
included in the lineup,
which included
three players from
Leeds and two from
Leicester.
Surprisingly, there was
no place for Adam
Armstrong, whose 32
goal contributions
(20 goals, 12 assists)
is the highest tally in
England’s top four
divisions.
Elsewhere, Leeds winger
Crysencio Summerville
won the Championship
Player of the Season
award, while Ipswich
boss Kieran McKenna
took home the prize for
Aribo
BRIMMING WITH CONFIDENCE IN THE MIDDLE OF
THE PARK, COMBINING FAST FEET AND NUTMEGS
WITH BATTLING DUELS, JOE ARIBO HAS HIT HIS
STRIDE AT THE PERFECT TIME OF THE SEASON…

Spandau Ballet’s
‘Gold’ has become
a staple song in the
stands at St Mary’s
these days, and
there’s only one
man’s performances
to thank for that.
In the 83rd minute
of Southampton’s
return to winning ways
against Coventry a
week ago, Joe Aribo
was withdrawn to
a standing ovation
from the stands, and
another rendition of
his now-customary
chant, after a midfield
masterclass of a
performance.
It wasn’t the first
time that evening
the stadium had
been in full voice, as
14 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
Aribo shone with an
indestructible display
in a 2-1 victory that
released some tension
after three matches
without a win.
“It's always an amazing
feeling,” Aribo reflected
on his love-in from
the fans, and his
vote on the evening
as the supporters’
Player of the Match.
“For me, when I step
out on the pitch,
I always want to
impress, I always
want to put on a show
and I was happy
that I was able to
do that. So yeah, it's
a good feeling.
“I always want to put
in good performances
for the team and
leave my mark on the
pitch and I felt like I
was able to do that.”
On the chant itself, the
Nigerian No. 7 even
gave it his official
seal of approval.
“I love it – it's funny
because on the way
in, just before prematch,
I had a group
of kids that were
looking at the stadium
and they were singing
the chant as well.
I really do like it.”
Aribo has been an
integral part of Russell
Martin’s side of late
with four consecutive
starts, fully bedding
himself back into the
side since returning

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 15

from the Africa Cup of
Nations in February.
His insurgence
throughout the
campaign has been
a steady one, with the
central midfielder now
reaping the rewards
for his tireless work
behind the scenes.
“I think the start for me
was a bit frustrating
because I knew what
I was capable of,
but I just wasn't fully
ready, I wasn't always
there and fully fit,”
Aribo admitted.
“I had a few injuries at
the beginning, which
was a bit frustrating,
so it was a bit startstop
but yeah, the
most important thing
16 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
is finishing strong and
that's what I aim to do.
“For me, it was just
when I wasn't playing
and I was training, I
was always letting
the manager know
that I’m ready.
“So in training games,
I'm always giving my
all – even on days off,
I'm doing my extras, I'm
doing gym sessions, so
I'm making sure that
I'm ready for when the
opportunity comes.
“That's what it's all
about, ultimately –
when the opportunity
comes, you have
to take it and see if
you're ready or not.”
That consistency
and diligence of
work clearly caught
the eye of Martin, as
Saints’ manager has
held Aribo in high
regard since his first
spell of starts before
heading to AFCON.
Aribo was a key figure
in December, earning
his place on the plane
with Nigeria in January
and February, before
gradually picking
up where he left off
upon his return to
Saints.
During his absence,
Martin wasn’t shy in
sharing that his side
were missing the
midfield maestro,
and that praise
only continued into
March and April.

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 17
"He is a top player,
he was excellent.”
Martin summarised
after Aribo's display
against Coventry.
“It was a huge amount
of minutes for him
[against Blackburn]
and then against
Coventry – Joe is a
top player. It took
him a while when he
got back because
he hadn’t played
for three or four
weeks at AFCON.”
Despite Aribo’s
naturally relaxed
demeanour, adopting
a ‘never too high, never
too low’ approach to
matters on and off
the pitch, he couldn’t
help but gain a boost
from his manager’s
comments.
“Yeah, of course it's
a good feeling, you
want to hear that your
manager believes
in you. I think that's
the most important
thing, that he's got
the full belief in you,
it just gives you the
confidence to go out
there and express
yourself and be free.
Aribo celebrates his dramatic
last-gasp winner at Birmingham (above)

“We've always had
a good relationship.
Anyone that's not
playing is going to be
frustrated, but there's
ways of going about it
and I'm not a person
that's going to go
the negative route.”
Despite suffering
heartbreak at the
final hurdle with his
country in the Ivory
Coast, Aribo’s season
hasn’t been dented
too much, by his own
admission.
“I was just getting
back into the team
at the time [of the
tournament] but it
was an honour for me
to go and represent
my country, so it was
one that I had to do.
“Coming back, it was
just like, 'OK, I'm ready
to go' – I had the taste
of it from before I left,
so I just wanted to
come back and hit
the ground running
again.
“For me, it's about
leaving a legacy
and playing well and
winning games. Every
game I play, I want to
win. I think I've got that
born winner in me.
“It's so frustrating
when I don't win so
I know how much it
means to me. Every
single tournament,
every single game I
play, I want to win.”
Slipping between two defenders, and
celebrating with Joe Rothwell (above)
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 19
Captain Joe scores against Hull
That ‘born winner’
mentality has seen
Aribo feature in several
high-profile games in
his career, from the
League One playoffs
with Charlton
Athletic to a Europa
League final with
Rangers, before his
most recent AFCON
final with Nigeria.
When quizzed on the
comparison between
the week-in, week-out
relentlessness of the
Sky Bet Championship
to the high-pressure
one-off matches
he’s starred in,
Aribo preferred to
see the benefits of
both.
“I think the intensity [of
the Championship]
is what makes you
ready for the big steps,
it is so intense and
it's just about being
ready when that time
comes, when that
opportunity comes.
“Big games?
Someone's got to
stand up and be
counted for. It's not
about hiding and not
expressing yourself,
or ultimately you'll
be the one that's
frustrated when the
game ends, because
you feel like you didn't
express yourself.”
With more twists,
turns and high-stakes
matches to come as
the season closes out,
Aribo seems to be
locked in and ready to
take on whatever the
run-in throws at him.
“Focus on the now – it's
just about being in the
zone,” he explained,
speaking from
experience of his own
promotion pushes, cup
conquests and title
triumphs. “You can't
be looking forward,
you can't be looking
backwards.
“You can't change the
past, you can't change
the future right now,
so it's just about now.”
Aribo clearly isn’t
looking too far ahead,
but if Saints can keep
clearing the hurdles
in front of them,
he might just strike
‘gold’ once more.

Sonnie Davis scores at Norwich
UNDER-21S STRENGTHEN
PL2 PLAY-OFF HOPES
Southampton’s
Under-21s extended
their unbeaten run in
Premier League 2 to
four matches with a
controlled victory over
Norwich City.
Brimming with
confidence from an
unbeaten March, Saints
began the game on
the front foot at The
Lotus Training Centre.
It took just five minutes
to open the scoring,
through a right-sided
combination that has
been in good form of
late.
Sam Amo-Ameyaw
drove into the penalty
area before slipping a
pass to Sonnie Davis
on the overlap, who
fired home at the near
post. For the third game
in a row, right-back
Davis found himself
on the scoresheet with
each goal of his streak
assisted by Amo-
Ameyaw.
Saints didn’t have to
wait long for a second,
as Pearce doubled
the lead when he
picked the ball up in
a crowded area and
found the far corner
with a low shot that
nicked off a Norwich
defender.
Pearce was denied
again moments later
after Tyler Dibling
charged forward and
set the striker through
on goal, only for Ellis
Craven to smother the
chance.
Norwich’s best
opportunity of the
first half came in the
closing minutes when
a corner wasn’t cleared
convincingly, but Pedro
Lima’s volleyed attempt
was blocked at pointblank
range by Jayden
Moore.
The hosts rallied at the
start of the second half
but could only muster a
series of half-chances;
they had the ball in the
back of the net from
a corner, but a foul on
Josh McNamara ruled
out the goal.
Saints resumed control
in the final 10 minutes,
with Pearce almost
scoring his second but
for an excellent block.
In the end, two goals
were enough as Saints
strengthened their
position in the play-off
bracket by moving up
to 14th in the table with
three games to play.

Southampton FC Fan
including choosing
the topic areas and
some of the project
work. Mike Sadler, Chair
of the FAB, says: “The
aims of the PL Fans
coincide with many
FAB objectives, such as
enhancing matchdays
for new and existing
fans, and strengthening
links between the
club, its fans, and the
local community. We
were very keen to see
targets set to bring new
fans into the club, and
are delighted that that
is already happening.
We will continue to work
with the Foundation to
make these projects an
ongoing success.”
To celebrate their
success, participants
were invited to attend
two Saints first-team
fixtures, against Hull
City and Sunderland.
For many of them it
was their first time
something they won’t
Since the first cohort
ON THE
ROAD WITH
THE SAINTS
BY BARRY WEBB
I HAD ALREADY DECIDED BEFORE THE FIFTH ROUND
DRAW TO RECALL ONE OF OUR STRONG FA CUP RUNS, 40
YEARS AGO. THE SAINTS WERE AWAY IN EVERY ROUND,
BAR ONE REPLAY AT HOME. ALTHOUGH THE RESULT
AGAINST LIVERPOOL WASN’T THE ONE WE HOPED FOR,
WE CAN CONSOLE OURSELVES WITH MEMORIES OF THE
RUN WHICH TOOK US TO THE SEMI-FINAL IN 1984.
THIRD ROUND 1984
The draw took us to
Nottingham Forest, a
strong home side so
some of us feared a
home win, even though
we had won 1-0 there
on the opening day
of the season. A good
defensive display by the
Saints kept the score at
0-0 until Steve Moran
scored a fine goal in the
77th minute and sent
the visitors crazy.
Six minutes later Forest
equalised, but we
redoubled our noisy
support as the team
pushed forward. It all
paid off four minutes
from time: Mark Dennis
lobbed the ball into
the mid-goal area for
Moran to head home.
FOURTH ROUND 1984
Saints faced an away
tie at Fratton Park.
Excitement grew in the
days and weeks before
the game but that was
nothing to the cauldron
of noise at the match
itself.
As in the previous
round, the game
remained goalless and
looked like going to a
replay but late in the
match David Armstrong
put in a perfect cross
and once again it was
Moran who won the
game with a left-footed
half-volley. Near silence
in three sides of the
ground but unbridled
noise at the away end.
FIFTH ROUND 1984
It was time to travel
again to Ewood Park
to play the in-form
Blackburn Rovers, who
had not lost in their
previous 16 home
matches. In what would
become a habit the
match was switched
for television to a Friday
evening. The crowd was
only just over 15,000,
although 2,000 Saints
fans did make the trip
north. I was one of
those forced by work
commitments to stay
at home and watch it
on TV – the first time
since 1976 that a Saints
cup game had been
televised.
Once more the game
was decided by a
single goal. This time
Armstrong was the
hero when he reached
a cross from Moran
to squeeze the ball
home from an angle.
Somehow it’s not the
same celebrating in
front of the TV, as we
were to discover many
seasons later when
Covid-19 struck.
SIXTH ROUND 1984
The quarter-final
stage found the Saints
heading north to
Sheffield Wednesday.
My dear friend Peter
Flick – with whom I then
watched from under
the West Stand at The
Dell – offered to drive.
On a sunny Sunday, we
coasted along enjoying
the fine weather and
our shared tastes in
music.
Two vivid mental
images from that day
have stayed with me.
The first came as we
joined the M1: as far as
the eye could see cars
and coaches adorned
with red and white were
carrying the Saints fans
north. Excited at the
sight ahead Peter said
(in a southern American
drawl): “Barry, we got us
a convoy!”
My second abiding
memory came during
the match itself. The
ball was skied high to
Danny Wallace out on
the wing and I can still
see him killing the ball
dead as it landed –
great skill.
An uneventful 0-0 draw
meant a replay and a
5-1 win for the Saints:
Peter and I could now
make plans for the
semi-final against
Everton, to be played
at Highbury. I hold one
silly memory of the
day: a surge forward of
the tight crowd on the
Clock End forced me
from the terrace step
and left me suspended
off the ground.
The irony was that the
Everton winner came
in extra-time after our
late goals had sealed
victories in earlier
rounds... ah well.
SHOWCASING AUTOGRAPHED MEMORABILIA, CLUB HISTORIAN
DUNCAN HOLLEY LOOKS BACK AT HOW SOUTHAMPTON FARED
AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR AND THE EMERGENCE
OF ARGUABLY THE CLUB’S GREATEST PLAYER.
IT SEEMS A TERRIBLE THING TO SAY BUT THE OUTBREAK
OF BOTH WORLD WARS CAME AT A GOOD TIME FOR
SAINTS. BOTH IN 1914 AND 1939, SOUTHAMPTON FC WERE
IN A TROUGH AND YET, SOON AFTER PEACE HAD BEEN
DECLARED, THE CLUB EMBARKED ON PERIODS OF SUCCESS.
In particular, the
second half of the
1940s saw the club
come heartbreakingly
close to reaching
the promised land
of the top flight. In
1947/48 they finished
34 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
third (just two clubs
were promoted
automatically back
then). The following
season all they needed
was a point in their last
match at Chesterfield
to go up, but they lost
1-0. Then in 1949/50,
they were denied
by goal average.
It was cruel luck and
three years later they
found themselves
relegated to the
Third Division (South)
after 31 years in the
Second Division. After
that, the club were in
the doldrums both
on and off the pitch,
with money tight and
prospects gloomy. The
club appointed Ted
Bates as manager in
1955 and he started
to turn the club’s
fortunes around.
He had a huge slice
of fortune when, in

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 35
1957, the Winchester-born
Terry Paine, aged just 17,
burst upon the scene.
With the help of another
17-year-old winger, John
Sydenham, Paine grabbed
the club by the scruff of
the neck and propelled
them back into the Second
Division in 1960 and then,
six years later, into the top
flight. Other players made
huge contributions too,
but in Terry, Saints had
found arguably their best
all-round footballer, and
he would play a total of
816 games for the club,
a record that now never
looks like being overtaken.
One of Terry’s best-ever
matches came in the
promotion year of 1960
when Saints were drawn
away to Manchester City
in the FA Cup. City were
two divisions above Saints
and were regarded as one
of the great cup-fighting
teams of the day. When
they went 1-0 up in the 18th
minute the writing looked to
be very much on the wall,
but Terry had other ideas.
In a performance his
manager later declared
was the best display he
had ever seen by an
outside-right, he ran the
City left-back ragged,
laying on four of the five
Saints goals. Derek Reeves
was the main beneficiary,
helping himself to four of
the goals, with George
O’Brien scoring the other.
It was, the Echo said:
“Saints’ finest hour in 66
years of cup fighting.”

Norwich City on
Saturday, defeated
Huddersfield Town 4-1
last Tuesday to sit five
points off the top six
at the time of writing,
albeit with a game in
hand on some of the
teams around them.
Trailing at the break
against the Terriers, a
penalty from Will Keane
drew Preston level,
before Milutin Osmajic
hit a late hat-trick
inside seven minutes
to secure victory for
the Lilywhites. Striker
Osmajic, signed from
Cadiz for a reported
£2.1m in the summer,
now has eight goals
for the season.
Hit by injuries at a
crucial time in the
campaign, Preston
have been without Liam
Millar, Ryan Ledson,
Ben Whiteman and
Brad Potts of late. Boss
Ryan Lowe was forced
to deploy defender
Jack Whatmough in
central midfield at
Watford recently.
“When you’re losing
quality players it’s not
easy, but I just get on
with it,” said Lowe, who
named 16-year-old
Theo Mawene on the
bench at Vicarage
Road. Mawene sat
alongside older brother
Noah, who himself
made his first-ever
start for North End
in the 1-0 defeat at
Birmingham City at the
start of the month.
It’s now 63 years
since Preston last
played top-flight
football. They sat top
of the table after the
opening eight games
of the campaign
but came crashing
down to earth with a
4-0 home defeat by
West Bromwich Albion
in late September.
That started a severe
decline in form, but
Lowe’s side picked up
the pace at the turn
of the year to push
themselves back into
the promotion mix,
despite criticism from
some quarters over
their style of play.
THE BOSS:
RYAN LOWE
Preston named Ryan Lowe as
manager in December 2021 to
succeed Frankie McAvoy. Lowe
had resigned from his position
at League One side Plymouth
Argyle earlier that day after
two and a half years in charge.
He took over at Home Park in
June 2019 and guided Argyle to
promotion from League Two in
that Covid-hit season, a feat he
had achieved the campaign
before with Bury. As a player,
Liverpool-born Lowe made his
name at Shrewsbury Town,
before stints at Chester City,
Crewe Alexandra, Bury, Sheffield
Wednesday, Milton Keynes
Dons and Tranmere Rovers. He
ended his playing days at Bury
and was named caretaker boss
in October 2017. When Chris
Lucketti was sacked in January
2018, Lowe again took charge
and was named manager on a
permanent basis the following
May, leading the Shakers to
promotion in his first season at
the helm.
P
ONE TO WATCH:
LIAM LINDSAY
Big Scot Liam Lindsay has
become a mainstay of the PNE
team, starting every league
game this season and playing
90 minutes in the majority of
them. His three goals have
earned North End five points
alone, with a last-gasp header
at Blackburn Rovers one of
Preston’s moments of the
season. Arriving at Deepdale
in an initial loan deal from
Stoke City in February 2021, the
now 28-year-old made the
move permanent the following
season. Starting out at Partick
Thistle, the Glasgow-born
centre-back joined Barnsley in
June 2017, suffering relegation
from the Championship in his
first season there, but sealing
promotion the following term.
Stoke paid £2.5m for the
services of Lindsay and Tykes
teammate Adam Davies in
June 2019. However, Lindsay
played just 23 times for the
Potters before heading to
Lancashire. Lindsay’s uncle
Ricky Gillies starred for St
Mirren, making more than 260
league appearances for the
Buddies.

THE LOCAL
LOWDOWN
WE ASKED OPPOSITION EXPERT GEORGE HODGSON,
PRESTON NORTH END REPORTER FOR THE LANCASHIRE
POST, TO PREVIEW TONIGHT’S GAME FROM THE
VISITORS’ POINT OF VIEW...
With four games to go,
how would you rate
Preston’s season so
far?
PNE can take some
confidence from the
fact they stayed in
and around the playoff
mix for so long. The
Lilywhites improved in
2024, but will ultimately
rue their rather dismal
run of form between
October and December.
It's always the challenge
for North End, to try and
go that one step further
and unfortunately they
have just come up short
once again.
Preston exceeded all
expectations in the
first few games of the
campaign, climbing
to the top of the
league. Things then
went really downhill
for North End and the
pressure was cranked
up on manager Ryan
Lowe, particularly
over the festive
period. Thankfully, PNE
managed to recover
and kick on again in the
new year.
42 « SAINTS « we march on
The Lilywhites were five
points behind sixthplaced
Norwich with a
game in hand ahead
of the weekend fixtures.
What’s the run-in like,
and how do you rate
Preston’s play-off
prospects?
Yeah, PNE's race looks
run now, sadly. They
picked up a big win
over Huddersfield
Town last Tuesday
night, to set up the
crunch match with
the Canaries. Preston
knew, realistically,
they needed to win
that game to stand a
chance and Gabriel
Sara landed the 86th
minute sucker-punch
at Deepdale.
Injury blows have been
suffered in recent
weeks and North End
were dealt another last
weekend, with recent
key man, Ali McCann,
ruled out.
North End will reflect
on plenty of other
moments and results
during the season, with
the narrow defeat to an
experienced Norwich
team – full of quality –
not where it was lost.
Preston's run-in was
pretty tough anyway, in
truth, with Leicester at
home and trips to West
Brom and of course, St
Mary's.
This is Ryan Lowe’s
second full season in
the job. What do the
fans make of the work
he’s doing?
He's certainly had an
up and down time
in the hot seat and
I'm sure there has
been lots and lots of
learning along the way.
North End have never
dropped down towards
the wrong end of the
table under Lowe, just
always stayed in and
around that mid-toupper
part of it.
PNE are on course for
an improved season,
in terms of points –
and potentially one
of their highest tallies
since returning to the
Championship, nine

we march on » SAINTS » 43
years ago. Lowe tries to
engage the supporters
and is a self-confessed
'people pleaser' –
though he has rubbed
fans up the wrong way,
at times, in the media.
On the whole, it's been a
steady two-and-a-half
years – full of highs and
lows. Recruitment has
been mostly positive
under the Liverpudlian
and this summer will
be important, as Lowe
and PNE aim to make
serious strides in what
will be his third full
season.
What’s this season’s
success been built on?
Plenty of the summer
signings have played a
key role over the course
of it, with Will Keane
top scorer and Duane
Holmes, Mads Frokjaer,
Milutin Osmajic and
Liam Millar boosting the
attack further.
North End will, at times,
succumb to superior
quality and make
mistakes like most
teams. But you can
often guarantee you
will see aggression,
energy and absolute
commitment in their
performance as a unit.
The whole squad has
been called upon and
different players have
stepped up at key
times. As mentioned,
that fantastic start of
20 points from the first
eight games was a big
P
boost and there was a
clear determination to
get back on track after
that horrible autumn
wobble.
Who have been the
standout players, both
over the course of
the campaign and in
recent weeks?
Since returning from a
shocking injury in late
December, Emil Riis
has been excellent up
front and looked the
real deal. His return
alone seemed to
give the whole club
a lift. Will Keane has
been a really savvy
pick-up, netting the
goals he has done
but also linking play
impressively all season.
Loan man Liam Millar
has often been a spark,
while Liam Lindsay
has been a consistent,
battling presence in the
heart of defence. Mads
Frokjaer is a class act in
midfield, on his day.
How do you see
tonight’s game going?
North End probably
know their season is
done now, in terms of a
play-off push. But while
there's still a chance
mathematically, PNE
have to keep going
and give it everything
they've got. It was a
fantastic match at
Deepdale earlier in the
season, and a repeat of
that would make for a
great watch.
Unite for Access:
Mark Harpur and
the SDSA
AS PART OF LEVEL PLAYING FIELD’S ‘UNITE FOR ACCESS’
CAMPAIGN 2024, WE’RE HIGHLIGHTING STORIES FROM
SAINTS FANS AND WHAT WE’RE DOING AS A CLUB TO
SUPPORT PEOPLE WITH ACCESSIBLE REQUIREMENTS
THROUGH OUR INITIATIVE, RED, WHITE AND YOU. THIS IS
MARK HARPUR’S STORY AND HIS REFLECTIONS ON HIS
BELOVED SAINTS DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
(SDSA).*
Mark has supported
Saints since he was
a child. Growing up
in Belfast, he spent
his summers in
Southampton, then
moving here in the
mid-nineties.
A current Season Ticket
Holder, Mark’s been
to every Men’s and
Women’s Team game,
home and away, for
the last couple of
years.
Mark joined the
SDSA in 2011 and
he’s passionate
about championing
accessibility. He was
born with cerebral
palsy, a condition
affecting the right side
of his body and top
half of his left side.
“Something which
54 « SAINTS « we march on
takes someone who
doesn’t have cerebral
palsy a certain amount
of time can take me
a bit longer in the
process. The whole
of my right side is
affected, as well as the
top half of my left side,
so I have a walker for
support.”
The SDSA represents
its members whenever
there are concerns
that need to be
raised with the club,
so we can make the
Saints experience as
accessible as possible.
Accessibility is crucial
for Mark and other
disabled football fans.
It’s not just about
home matches though
- Mark travels around
the country to watch
our teams in action.
“In terms of access
to St Mary’s Stadium,
my experience is
very good. However,
away games come
with varying degrees
of experience for
a disabled person.
Access to some
grounds I’ve been to
this season has been
challenging to say the
least. I know it’s difficult
but in some cases,
a little bit of thought
could be put into trying
to improve the facility.”
Since its creation
in 2010, we’ve been
working with the
SDSA to make the
stadium as accessible
as possible. There’s
still work to be done
and that’s why it’s

we march on » SAINTS » 55
important people
like Mark share their
experiences.
Upon joining the SDSA,
Mark made it clear he
wanted to get involved
and was on the
committee for 10 years.
Following a recent
break, he’s rejoining
the committee to
continue supporting
the Association, saying
he feels obligated
to do so to continue
giving disabled fans a
voice.
The influence of the
SDSA can be seen
around the stadium.
Working together, we
now have drop-down
counters at the ticket
offices, RADAR locks on
the toilets, automated
doors at the Stadium
Megastore, a Sensory
Room and Changing
Places Facility,
improved car parking
so disabled fans can
park closer to their
stand and a disabled
queuing system for
getting drinks.
The Association has
Season Tickets it offers
to its members on a
game-by-game basis
too, whether as a
taster of what coming
to the stadium is like, or
for fans needing some
financial support.
If you have a disability,
the SDSA is there to
help. Working together,
we strive to make sure
disabled facilities at
St Mary’s are best in
class.
Talking about the
changed his matchday

experience: “After my
accident people said
to me, ‘you know one
thing you won’t be
doing is going to the
football because you
won’t be able to see
it.’ But I said I had to
be there to get the
atmosphere again.
The good thing about
the AMS description
is that with the
radio I guess I’m at
an advantage as I
know what’s going
on across the pitch.
If you enjoy the
atmosphere and could
benefit from using
the service, please do
it – the commentary
is fantastic and keeps
you in touch with
what’s happening from
Once you’ve bought
your match ticket,
you can book a
receiver for the service
by emailing Helen
Goosey: accessiblity@
saintsfc.co.uk.
Steve’s son, Dan
travels to games with
his dad. He said the
process of accessing
the AMS receiver is
really simple: “We
come in the normal
turnstiles as usual,
walk up the gangway
and there’s usually
a steward there we
know who gives us
the receiver and dad
connects his headset.
We’ve been doing
this for a number of
seasons now and it’s
pretty seamless.”
The service is
available to both
home and away
fans visiting St Mary’s
Stadium for Men’s and
Women’s Team and it’s
free of charge.
It’s provided by
specially trained
commentators who
keep up with play to
the second, meaning
you won’t miss a
moment.
The receivers are
simple to use from
anywhere in the
stadium and while we
can offer you a set of
headphones to borrow
on the day, it’d be
great if you can bring
your own.
We’ll arrange to have
a receiver brought to
your seat before kick
off. At full-time, please
return your receiver to
a nearby steward. In
order for us to continue
providing this service,
it’s vital we have all
receivers returned to
us at the end of each
match.
