EDITORIAL
Dear customers and partners,
In our last issue we talked about the impact
of the EU Mobility Package and the importance
of giving the logistics industry a higher
profile as a partner. Of course, in half a year
you cannot correct what has been neglected
in the industry over the past 50 years. However,
our value of communication has proven
itself even in this situation. It has always been
important to both UnitCargo as a company,
and myself as CEO, to be transparent and
respectful in our approach to costs and cooperation.
All our customers now have fully
understood the current situation and, for the
first time, we have worked together as equal
partners to solve the problems of trucks and
driver shortages and to find solutions. As always,
our top priority has been the maintenance
of our customers‘ supply chains.
One might say casually, every crisis is also
an opportunity but if you take this to heart
and really see it that way and do things better
than before, there really is an opportunity.
The motto here is „Only the brave move forward“.
As a society we go from one crisis to another
and so in this issue we are discussing the
crisis created by the Ukraine war as well as
the uncertainty surrounding the Corona virus
though it is clear that the effects of both will
be negative. In this new issue, we consider
what possible solutions there will be forthcoming
from a team which is both enthusiastic
and motivated. Diversification of risks and
enhanced cooperation will be a big topic in
the next six months, and I am already excited
about what is coming and what will happen.
Be assured that UnitCargo will find the best
solutions for all our partners in these challenging
times.
with orange regards,
2022:
A year of
challenges
for the transport
industry
Eduard Gharzouzi, BA
(Head of UC Procurement)
In terms of the national, European
and even global economy, 2022 must
be considered to be exceptional.
The balance between supply, demand and production
has been destroyed, severely disrupting
supply-chains everywhere. This has impacted
strongly on the logistics industry and looks sure
to continue fare into the future. The increasingly
drastic shortage of truck drivers, the rising inflation,
the mobility package of the European-Union,
the aftermath of Brexit as well as economic
effects and restrictions in connection with CO-
VID-19 should be more than enough, one might
think, but now another component has been added
and that is the Ukraine conflict which has driven
prices for fuel higher than ever.
The transport sector faces these challenges every
day and it would not be overstating the case to
say that survival of many industries depends on
their efforts to keep wheel rolling.
UNITCARGO BUSINESS
UNITCARGO BUSINESS
Truck driver
shortage
The steady reduction in driver availability has been
apparent for many years with older drivers retiring
and fewer young people attracted to an industry
in which they are held in low esteem with difficult
working conditions, persist and onerous legal
oversite and exceptionally high training costs.
To what extent the war in Ukraine has exacerbated
this crisis is difficult to quantify on a European
level, but it is well known that the Polish industry,
a major player in the truck industry, has, for many
years, depended on Ukrainian drivers. The absence
of these drivers, considered to be 120,000
people, whether due to the general mobilization
ordered by President Zelenskyy or their need to
keep their families safe. Has had an impact far beyond
Poland’s borders with a rapid escalation of
prices.
UnitCargo’s established policy of contracted and
stable capacities has certainly helped to stabilise
the situation for its clients, reinforcing the company’s
principle of three equal partners in the operation:
customer, company and driver.
“The absence of 120,000
drivers has had an impact
far beyond Poland‘s
borders”.
Rising
fuel prices
The cost of fuel has now become the single biggest
cost factor in transport with price rises over
the past two years far exceeding the increases
seen in previous times of crisis.
This volatility is threatening the profitability and
viability of transportation services and is driving
the search for a fair and equitable solution to this
complex problem.
A solution that shows a high level of effectiveness,
apart from flat-rate surcharges is the application
of fuel clauses in contracts where the prices for
the transport service are automatically adjusted
according to the fluctuating fuel prices. In fact,
this solution should be extended beyond contracted
rates to include those rates pertaining in the
spot market although this requires a high degree
of communication between all the partners in the
contract in order to ensure that the result is fair to
all. The key here is flexibility in the face of volatility.
Without it transport companies will no longer
be able to remain competitive today and provide a
good service in the future.
“A solution that shows a high
level of effectiveness is the
application of fuel clauses in
contracts where the prices for
the transport service are
automatically adjusted
according to the fluctuating
fuel prices”.
EU Mobility
package
As mentioned in our last issue of the Journal,
many measures of the mobility package started
to take effect in February 2022. Confusion was evident
among truck drivers, industry and transport
companies.
Those elements affected are: social regulations
such as driving and rest times, the digital tachograph
and the posting of employees with an obligation
to report the posting of drivers via a dedicated
interface for carriers. This interface is linked
to the IMI system for information exchange in the
internal market.
Remuneration structures for cross-border drivers
are also changing as drivers must be paid the full
minimum wage applicable in the country where
they are providing the service if it is a posting according
to the rules of the Mobility Package 1 published
the European Union.
In UnitCargo we stick to our company value
“communication” and want to share our values
by educating our partners, namely: the production
industry, freight forwarders and hauliers. We
provide clarification and knowledge regarding the
mobility package to ensure a quick and efficient
implementation of the directive in daily practice.
We underpin our status as a trustworthy partner
through open and honest discussions regarding
increased costs and changed conditions.
“Elements affected are:
social regulations, digital
tachograph and the posting
of employees...”.
Connecting
the flows
with our own
capacities
To conclude, the transportation industry
faces major changes in 2022 that require
agile action to secure our customers‘
supply chains.
In order to continue to perform sustainably
in 2022, we rely on even closer
cooperation with our clients and truck
drivers, because only through close
communication we can react proactively
to changing conditions and market
fluctuations. UnitCargo relies on stable
truck capacities in order to continue to
offer customers a high-quality service in
2022 and in our support for truck drivers
we offer stable and fast payments to ensure
their liquidity and security, with stable
cargo volumes to protect them from
market developments. Overall, we continue
to follow our credo „Connecting the
flows with our own capacities“!
“UnitCargo supports
truck drivers by offering
stable and fast payments
to ensure their liquidity
and security, with stable
cargo volumes to protect
them from market
developments.”.
UNITCARGO BUSINESS
UNITCARGO BUSINESS
Packaging:
the key to safe transport
Often overlooked, appropriate packaging can substantially reduce insurance claims
in transport which ultimately reduces insurance costs. Here Andreas Hofer, CEO of the
Insurance bureau Dr. Ignaz Fiala, gives an expert overview.
“... transport by truck
represents an efficient
and cost effective
method of bringing
products from
producers to
consumers”.
A better understanding of the rights
and obligations of both consignors
and carriers can certainly make the
entire transport process far more cost
effective. For example, an often over
looked fact is that correct packaging is the total
responsibility of the consignor and any defect in
packaging which results in damage to the cargo
during transport is not the liability of the forwarder
or carrier. Also, carriers are not responsible for the
repair or replace of defective packaging or repack
goods in a more appropriate way.
Clearly, the consignor knows the special characteristics
of his products and how best to protect
it during transport and this demands a thorough
knowledge of the transport system such that all
foreseeable risks can be covered. This includes
normal vibration, centrifugal forces in tight curves,
braking effects, the effects of heat and cold or the
stress resulting from multiple reloading. It is important
to remember that warning symbols do not
replace appropriate packaging and, unfortunately,
recycled or reclaimed packaging may just not be
good enough. It should also be remembered that,
legally speaking, if goods are shipped in sales packaging
they are considered to be unpacked for
transport.
Suitable packaging for transport by truck needs
to fulfil the following requirements:
1. Protection of the goods against the dynamic
stress during transport and multiple handling
or the form-fitting nature of the package.
2. Packages must also be packed in such a way
that access to the contents is only possible by
leaving external traces in order to ensure protection
against theft.
3. Smaller packages of a consignment should be
grouped into larger units and packages heavier
than 1,000 kg must be marked with the
appropriate weight.
4. In the case of products which have special or
unusual characteristics, approved handling
instructions must be attached.
Poor quality packaging can include such things
as: incorrectly dimensioned packaging, exceeding
performance limits, packaging of inferior quality,
lack of instructions for the proper handling or labelling
of the goods, poor securing of load units
on the pallet, defective foiling, goods protruding
beyond the pallet or completely unpackaged are
among the regularly reported packaging deficiencies.
In addition to the packaging obligation, the consignor/principal
also has an information and labelling
obligation. All the information known to
the consignor and influencing the execution of the
order, such as addresses, type and nature of the
goods, gross weight, value of goods or delivery
times, must be provided in good time.
Likewise, the packages must be correctly labelled
so that the freight forwarder can check the goods
for completeness and identity and deliver them to
the correct recipient. Complete and transparent
understanding of the entire packaging process
leads to economical and damage-free transport
and this process starts with the development of
the sales or product packaging, which influences
the size and stability of the transport packaging.
When taking over the consignment, the forwarder
must then check the number and type of packages
taken over and the external condition of
the packaging, as well as carrying out interface
checks. Excluded from this and not to be confirmed
is whether the packaging used is suitable for
transport, the contents of the individual packages,
the number of individual cartons on a pallet or the
weight of the packages.
Correctly handled, transport by truck represents
an efficient and cost effective method of bringing
packaged, insurance claims are reduced which in
turn reduces costs through lower insurance costs.
Presentation of the Logistics
Ambassador’ initiative
By Ines Kiszala, BA
(Head of UC Quality Management)
The Logistics Ambassador initiative
was launched a few years ago by our
CEO, Davor Sertic. After a short break
due to the pandemic, the initiative was reactivated
with a new team in 2021. Its primary aim is to make
young people aware of the world of logistics and
its diverse career opportunities and to give them
the chance to get a taste of various professions in
this sector. It also illustrates the diversity and internationality
of the logistics sector, since in hardly
any other sector are migration backgrounds and
multilingualism as advantageous as in logistics.
The initiative is also intended to show that the logistics
industry is one of the safest sectors and a
growing market, even in times of crisis, as the developments
of recent years have more than clearly
demonstrated. The team of logistics ambassadors
currently consists of 9 young experts who
have found their way into logistics through a wide
variety of educational paths. It is precisely this diversity
of opportunities and career paths that the
Logistics Ambassadors team passes on to young
people in presentations. To this end, workshops
are held at schools, for example, where young
people are given a direct insight into the most diverse
logistics areas. In addition, the logistics ambassadors
have already been present at career
fairs. The pupils benefit directly from the individual
experiences of the logistics ambassadors and can
thus gain a first-hand insight into the world of logistics.
The logistics ambassadors themselves, on the other
hand, benefit from the network and are also
actively involved in putting an end to the shortage
of skilled workers. To date, the Logistics Ambassadors
team has been able to give several hundred
young people an insight into their activities and
career paths.
Currently, two of our UnitCargo employees are involved
in the Logistics Ambassadors initiative in
Austria on a voluntary basis. However, our goal as
UnitCargo is to extend this initiative to all countries
where we have branches and have therefore nominated
at least one person as a logistics ambassador
in each location.
We are currently in close contact with various
universities to promote our initiative and to give
young people in other countries the opportunity
to gain a deep insight into our industry so that we
can all create a „better logistics world“ together.
Football, it’s just a game …
Our new office in Romania
Dan Nicolae
(Branch Office Manager RO Continent)
This is how it started for me 20 years
ago, when I was a child in my hometown.
Former football player in the 4th,
3rd and 2nd Romanian leagues, studying Logistics
and Management, now Branch Office Manager at
UnitCargo, an unbelievable journey.
Football has a strong tradition in Romania, starting
in 1890 on Kiseleff street in Bucharest, where the
first football game was played between people of
different nationalities coming from the textile and
petrol industries, all the way to the teams that won
Champions League title and reached the quarterfinals
in 1994 USA World Cup. After period of war,
most of the biggest Romanian clubs qualified for
higher international competitions after winning titles
in the national football championship.
So, also for me it is was not just a game. It is about
passion, vision, winning mentality and hard work.
Coming with this mentality to a professional company
like UnitCargo, which plays a big role in the
logistics market, it was very easy to adapt my hobby
to the daily workflow and be part of a wonderful
team where it is important to achieve goals and
you have the same beautiful feeling of scoring
goals.
Normally, a hobby is always related to an activity
that is outside of the daily business and serves to
relax, but you can always connect your hobby with
your work and be happy throughout the day. In the
end, all I can say is that it‘s not just a passion, it‘s a
part of me.
“... for me it is not just
a game. It is about passion,
vision, winning mentality
and hard work”.
UnitCargo Romania was established in 2014 and
has experienced steady growth during a time of
many challenges. We like to say that we have faced
them all from the Covid 19 crisis to the war in
Ukraine close to our border and the resulting fuel
price increases, which have a strong impact on all
transport costs. Our plan now is to grow our market
share rapidly and follow the model which has
been successfully established in Bulgaria which is
to open a warehouse and substantially increasing
the number of employees with the opening of a
second office. This will bring us closer to both our
customers and suppliers and so enable us, with
our positive attitude, play a bigger role in the Romanian
market, balancing export and import operations
within our main corridor.
Certainly, within the UnitCargo transport corridor,
extending as it does from Scandinavia to the Balkans,
Romania is a key element.
We anticipate that the changes we are making to
