CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
NEIL
GOLDING
7
FIRST, A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE
GLOUCESTER PLAYERS, COACHES AND FANS.
This is our first game at
StoneX Stadium for what
feels like an age after the
break for the Six Nations
and of course the trip to
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
for The Showdown!
It was an amazing day
at Spurs back in March
with over 60,000 of you
in attendance to witness
an incredible performance
against Harlequins. To see
so many fans in the stadium
will live long in the memory
and we are all very excited to
see that event grow over the
coming years.
The loss in Bordeaux was of
course a tough one to take
but I know everyone at the
training ground is incredibly
excited to get back in to
Premiership action with so
much at stake over the next
few weeks.
The Premiership is a brilliant
league and the drama we
have ahead in the race for
the play-off spots will be
fascinating. Gloucester
are a very dangerous
outfit and a club that we
have a lot of respect for so
let’s hope we can kickstart
the run in with a good win
this afternoon.
Over the past few weeks I
am sure you have all seen the
announcements regarding
some of the players who will
be joining us next season.
The group that we have
assembled to take the club
forward over the coming
years is one that we are very
excited by and judging by the
Seasonal Membership sales
so far, you are all delighted
as well!
There will of course be some
real club legends departing
at the end of the season
and with only a handful of
matches left, there is real
desire to ensure we send
them all off in the right way.
I’d like to give a huge
congratulations to Saracens
Women who have qualified
for the Allianz Cup Final next
weekend. The semi-final win
over Exeter was a real thriller
and let’s hope they can get
their hands on the trophy
away in Bristol.
It is also brilliant to see
so many of our players
shining during the Women’s
Six Nations! I know there
is a big crowd expected
at Twickenham today for
England v Ireland so fingers
crossed the Red Roses can
take another step towards
the Grand Slam.
It has also been a busy time
for the Mavericks, who hosted
a brilliant ‘Headliner’ in
front of a bumper crowd at
Wembley Arena a fortnight
ago. It was a huge moment
for the club to have over
2,500 at such an iconic venue
and hopefully we can keep
the momentum up moving
forward!
Back to today, it’s one of our
biggest games of the season
and with another sold out
crowd let’s cheer as loudly as
possible!
Enjoy the game!
Neil

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN
OWEN
FARRELL
GOOD
AFTERNOON
AND WELCOME
TO STONEX
STADIUM
FOR TODAY’S
MATCH AGAINST
GLOUCESTER.
With the league so tight, it’s
a massive game today and
we know we need to be at our
best to keep up our push for
the play-offs.
After the Bordeaux game
we had some time to reflect
on what was of course a
disappointing result. We had
some honest conversations
in our debrief and we are
all incredibly motivated to
make sure we hit the ground
running this afternoon.
The support over there in
France was phenomenal, we
are gutted we couldn’t come
away with a win but seeing
so many of you in the stands
was incredible.
Gloucester are playing some
great rugby at the moment
and we are prepared for a big
test this afternoon. They are
on a real high after winning
the Premiership Rugby Cup
and are also through to the
semi-finals of the Challenge
Cup.
Defensively we were in a good
place at Kingsholm earlier
this season and we know we’ll
need to do the same today to
come out on the right side of
the result.
A lot has happened since
our last match here back in
January. The Showdown at
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
was an amazing occasion and
I’d like to thank everyone for
all of your messages before
my 250th, you all made it a
truly special day for me and
my family.
It’s that time of the season
when the big games come
thick and fast, and we’ve got
another big challenge away
at Bath next weekend which
is another crucial one for us.
On behalf of all of us, massive
congratulations to our
Women who got through to
the Cup Final last weekend. I
know they’ll be going all out
to lift the trophy next Sunday
in Bristol and we’ll all be
supporting!
Back to today, we can’t wait
to run out in front of another
sold out crowd at StoneX and
we’ll do everything we can to
put smiles on your faces!
See you all after - enjoy the
game!

SCENE SETTER
First it was the Six
Nations and then Europe.
But from here on in the
rest of the season is all
about the defence of the
Gallagher Premiership.
There is nothing else to
divert the attention and
the next four games will
determine the fate of the
season for the ‘Men in
Black’. Can Owen Farrell’s
side make it a ‘Magnificent
Seventh’ title? That’s
the goal, starting with
today’s home clash with
Gloucester.
This is how the
Premiership table looked
coming into this weekend
– with no fewer than nine
teams still mathematically
capable of breaking into
the top four:
CLUB P W D L Pts
Northampton Saints 14 10 0 4 49
Bath Rugby 14 8 0 6 43
Saracens 14 8 0 6 42
Harlequins 14 8 0 6 42
Bristol Bears 14 8 0 6 40
Exeter Chiefs 14 8 0 6 40
Leicester Tigers 14 8 0 6 39
Sale Sharks 14 8 0 6 37
Gloucester Rugby 14 4 0 10 26
Newcastle Falcons 14 0 0 14 5
It may be a stretch for
Gloucester to climb into a
semi-final berth, but they
will arrive today highly on
adrenaline and spirit after
their EPCR Challenge Cup
quarter final win over the
Ospreys.
Mark McCall’s side may
have won 24-3 at Kingsholm
earlier in the season, but he
only has to cast his mind
back a couple of seasons to
recall the Cherry & Whites
winning 25-24 at the StoneX
16

17
on 8 January 2022. Three
tries and 10 points from
Adam Hastings earned them
a famous win on that day,
when not even a 76th minute
try from Alex Lewington could
save the day for the home
side.
Speaking of Alex, the wing
announced last week he
will be retiring from the
professional game at the
end of the season. What a
servant the 32-year-old has
been to Saracens, Leicester
Tigers and London Irish.
Having launched his career
at Welford Road in 2009,
he switched to the Irish four
years later. He then joined
Saracens in 2018. He has
made 130 appearances for
the ‘Men in Black’ and has
scored 55 tries. His 62 league
tries make him the 12th top
try scorer in the history of the
Premiership.
He played for England
Saxons, but surprisingly
never got a call for full Test
honours. Now he is focussed
on brining his 15 year pro
career to a successful end.
“I’ve decided to retire from
professional rugby at the end
of the current season and I
can’t express what the sport
has given me - friendships,
purpose, happiness and the
chance to live my dream,” said
Lewington in announcing his
decision.
“Saracens have shown me the
highest levels this game can
truly be played at. It’s where
I’ve created a home, but all
good things have to come to
an end!”
We wish him all the best
wherever he lands next!

Stainless steal.
In 1972, famed designer Gérald Genta created an oxymoron. Priced more than many
precious metal rivals, the ‘luxury stainless steel timepiece’ was not an immediate
success. But eventually its tough, elegant body, integrated bracelet and patterned
dial caught on. A watch that dressed up for dinner. Or down, at the pool. Today’s
40mm, base automatic of that original watch costs £22,850 more than the new
‘Twelve’ - named for its dodecagon-sided bezel and rear lock ring. Our watch is
thinner, goes deeper and offers a choice of C1/BL Grade X1-lumed dials. A polished,
brushed and sandblasted case of daylight (and night time) robbery?
Do your research.

WHILE IT MAY NOT
HAVE BEEN THE
GREATEST LEAGUE
CAMPAIGN FOR THE
CHERRY & WHITES
SO FAR, LAST
WEEKEND’S EPCR
CHALLENGE CUP
QUARTER-FINAL WIN
OVER THE OSPREYS
AT KINGSHOLM
PROVED THEY ARE A
TOP CLASS OUTFIT.
Their ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ season
has not only seen them
reach a European semi-final,
but also pick up the first
piece of silverware of the
season in the English game,
the Premiership Cup. They
powered to a 23-13 home win
over Leicester Tigers to win
the title and then went to
Welford Road a week later
and won 27-25 in a league
fixture.
Not too shabby, I hear you all
say, but then they returned to
their beloved Kingsholm for
a huge west country derby
against Bristol Bears and
conceded five tries in a 33-24
defeat. That hurt!
If it wasn’t quite a case of
going back to the drawing
board after losing local
bragging rights, head coach
George Skivington was
brutally honest with his side
as they headed into their Euro
shoot-out with the Ospreys.
“After missing so many
tackles in our against Bristol
we put a big focus on our
defence for the next two
weeks. I was really pleased
at how we went in that area
against the Ospreys,” said
Skivington.
“We knew Ospreys would
go hard at the breakdown
and they got into us early
on and caught us on the
counter with an excellent try.
Despite it being only 14-13 at
the interval, we were happy
we were doing the right
things but overall we weren’t
accurate enough.
“We are lucky to have secured
a number of knock-out games
at home so far this season
and the more we bring to
Kingsholm the better.”
Next up will be Benetton
Rugby, who knocked out
Connacht in their semi-final.
The Italian national team in
disguise, they will present
another huge challenge
before Gloucester can start
contemplating winning the
Challenge Cup for a third
time.
Scottish international Adam
Hastings was back in action
for the Ospreys game and
gave a good account of
himself. That allowed the
multi-talented Argentine star
Santi Carreras to switch to
his favoured position of full
back.
His six successful penalties
kicked the Ospreys out
of the tournament and
his goalkicking will be a
huge threat today. Add
in the explosive back row
trio of Zach Mercer, Ruan
Ackermann and Lewis Ludlow
and there is plenty of star
quality in their side.
A top four finish may be a bit
of a stretch with only four
games to play, but in this
topsy-turvy season, anything
seems possible. They will
travel with a real spring in
their step and looking to carry
on the good work against the
Ospreys at the StoneX.

DOB: 28.06.1997 (26)
Position: Back Row
Ht/Wt: 1.91m / 6’ 3” – 108kg / 17st 1lb
Honours: England (2)
One of the most sought after
players in Europe, he helped
Montpellier win the Top 14
title for the first time in
2022 and was named as the
Player of the Season in that
tournament. His running, offloading
and handling skills
are things of beauty, yet he
has remained a fringe player
for England under Eddie
Jones and Steve Borthwick.
His French sojourn – he left
Bath to join Montpellier –
meant he wasn’t available
for Test duty, but since
joining Gloucester this
season he has carried on his
great form. One to watch for
all Saracens players, as well
as everyone in the crowd.
DOB: 29.12.1995 (28)
Position: Back Row
Ht/Wt: 1.95m / 6’ 5” – 110kg / 17st 4lb
Honours: South Africa A / Barbarians
One of the strongest ball
carriers in the Premiership,
he is the man who always
gets the Cherry & White son
the front foot. Formed a
great back row partnership
with Zach Mercer. Ruan
knocks down the door and
Zach weaves his magic from
there. South African born,
but now English qualified
through residency, he is
a captain who leads by
example. Nearing 150 games
for Gloucester, he joined the
club in 2017 when his father,
Johan, was the head coach.
He learned his rugby in the
hard school of South Africa
and played Super Rugby with
the Lions before heading to
Kingsholm. Played twice for
South Africa A.
DOB: 01.04.1990 (34)
Position: Wing
Ht/Wt: 1.88m / 6’ 2” – 90kg / 14st 2lb
Honours: England (77)
Thirty-six tries in 77 games
for England underlines the
threat Gloucester’s flying
wing presents to any team.
That puts him second on
England’s all-time list behind
Rory Underwood. A product
of the Gloucester Academy,
he made 121 times for
Gloucester Rugby from 2009
before moving to Leicester
Tigers in 2017. He was back
in Cherry & White in 2020
and is closing in on 200
appearances for the club.
Played in the 2019 England
side that reached the World
Cup final and in the 2023
team that ended as Bronze
medallists in France. That
was his third World Cup
tournament after making
his international debut in
Argentina in 2013.
STEPHEN VARNEY
DOB: 16.05.2001 (23)
Position: Scrum Half
Ht/Wt: 1.78m / 5’ 10” – 80kg / 12st 8lb
Honours: Italy (29)
He’s Welsh-born and
Welsh speaking, plays his
rugby in England and is
now an experienced Italian
international – courtesy of
an Italian mother. Another
Hartpury College product, he
first impressed for the Cherry
& Whites in the Premiership
U18 league and went on to
represent Italy at U18 and
U20 level. He scored three
tries in three games when
George Skivington first called
him into the first team. Since
then he has simply got better
and better. Ended the recent
Six Nations on the highest of
highs as he helped Italy beat
his native Wales in Cardiff to
make it two wins and a draw
in the campaign.
Varney excelled and
was called up to Italy’s
squad where he made his
international debut against
Scotland in the Autumn
Nations Cup and impressed
again for his country in the
Six Nations.
SANTI CARRERAS
DOB: 30.03.1998 (26)
Position: Full Back / Outside Half
Ht/Wt: 1.80m / 5’ 11” – 82kg / 12st 13lb
Honours: Argentina (41)
Mr Versatility in the back
division for Gloucester.
Did a great job at No 10
when Adam Hastings was
injured and is now back in
his preferred position of full
back – the position in which
he played in Argentina’s
historic 25-15 victory over
the All Blacks in Australia.
Great attacking talent and,
when he is in the groove, a
prolific goalkicker. He arrived
at Kingsholm early on in the
2020/21 season, scoring six
tries in 14 games that season.
He quickly developed into
a favourite with ‘The Shed’
and has an uncanny ability to
poach interception tries. He
was voted Gloucester Rugby’s
Coaches’ Player of the
Season for 2022/23. Went to
his second World Cup earlier
in the season, when he helped
the Pumas to beat Wales in
the quarter finals and reach
the Bronze Final against
England.

SARACENS SUPPORTERS
ASSOCIATION (SSA)
E Saracens Supporters Association
D @sarriessupport
Q ssa_racens
A very good day, everyone, from
all of us in the SSA, and welcome
to the first Men’s Premiership
game at StoneX since our highly
entertaining 40-22 win over
Exeter Chiefs way back on 27th
January – that seems like an age
ago now, doesn’t it?
Fantastic as the matchday
experience at Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium was – and what
more could any self-respecting
Sarries fan have asked for than
a 60,000+ crowd watching a
52-7 win over Quins? - there is
nowhere quite like home, is there?
we’re sure you’re all enjoying
being back in the old routine, and
you writer for one will be looking
forward to the choice of food
which some rate as the best in
the Premiership!
We’d like to also take this
opportunity to welcome to
StoneX this afternoon the
players, coaches and supporters
from Gloucester Rugby, who we
hope have had a good trip up
from the South-West – Glos, as
they’re affectionately known,
are renowned for the passion of
their support, always coming to
Stone X in good numbers and
their noise always brought; with
Sarries looking to stay in the
thick of a highly competitive race
for a top-four finish, and to put
behind them that desperately
disappointing evening at Stade
Chaban-Delmas, it’s vital that
each and every one of you in
black and red shouts loud and
long today!
ROUND-UP
Since we last wrote this column,
the Men’s squad rebuilding for
next season has continued apace
with another three exciting young
players signing on to join Sarries
at the start of 2024-25:
36
The 24-year old England and
Scotland-qualified fly-half
Fergus Burke will be arriving from
Pacific Super Rugby’s Crusaders;
one of England’s brightest
young fly-half prospects, 20-
year old Louie Johnson, will
make the move south from
Newcastle Falcons alongside
Phil Brantingham; finally, the
formidable centre Sam Spink, 24
and doubtless familiar to some of
you from his time with Wasps, will
be returning to his native England
from a highly successful spell in
Pacific Super Rugby with Perthbased
outfit Western Force.
We’re sure Fergus, Louie and Sam
will be hugely successful in Sarries
colours over the coming years and
would like to take this opportunity
to extend a big SSA welcome to
the family!
In terms of players leaving
Sarries at the end of the season,
there have been various stories
circulating in the press and on
social media, but the latest
departure to be confirmed is that
of Alex Lewington who after six
highly successful seasons since
his arrival from London Irish has
decided, at the young age of 31,
to retire from professional rugby;
at the time of writing we aren’t
party to Alex’s future plans but
we’re sure you’ll all join us in
wishing Alex every success in his
next chapter!
While writing we’d like to
congratulate all those Sarries
involved in the ongoing Women’s
Six Nations, which has most
notably seen England rack up two
wins big wins, by 0-48 away to
Italy followed by a 46-10 home
drubbing of Wales followed last
week by another huge winning
score away from home, 0-46
against Scotland – here’s hoping
that terrifying points difference
will be added to against Ireland
today!
Obviously, everyone was
desperately disappointed by the
result in Bordeaux two weeks
ago, and after a strong start
had given us hope of a different
result second time around, Union
Bordeaux-Begles were able to
take the game away from Sarries
and ran out 45-12 winners but
putting the game itself aside,
the other story of the night was
the fantastic and extremely
noisy support from more than
200 Sarries supporters who’d
travelled to Bordeaux , many for
a second time in less than three
months, to follow the team - we
hope the photos we’ve posted on
social media, and those shown
here, will capture something of
the pride and passion coming
from the Sarries section that
night, and those of us in the
stadium were even prouder when
reports from home told us that
not only was the noise clearly
audible on TV, but even the match
commentators had remarked
on it!
The match apart, the travelling
fans had a marvellous weekend
in Bordeaux, made even better
by another visit to the UBB
Supporters’ clubhouse at Hangar
16, where our own Nigel Eaton
had arranged a meet-up with
the home fans. Hangar 16 then
became something of a base
for visiting Sarries, and we have
reliable reports that a large group

37
of our fans enjoyed a several
hours-long lunch there on the
Sunday after the match!!
Sarries Women have in the
meantime put our club firmly in
sight of the season’s first trophy
when a 36-29 win our old rivals
Exeter Chiefs last Saturday at
StoneX put us into the final, away
to Bristol Bears at Shaftesbury
Park next Sunday, 28th April
(14.00) – we hope that as many
of you as possible have managed
to secure some of the limited
number of tickets!
Mavericks have continued to enjoy
something of a mixed start to the
season, with the latest result that
46-70 defeat at Wembley Area on
7th April.
NEXT UP
Next up for the Men is a visit to
the Rec to take on Bath on Friday
26th April at 19.45 –
Nigel has written to Members
about a pre-match meet-up at
Bath Cricket club.
The Women, as reported above,
will be away to Bristol Bears
on 28th April and everything is
crossed for the team heading
east down the M4 with a cup on
board the coach!
The Mavericks in the meantime
will have played London Pulse
at the Copper Box on 15th April,
and by the time you read this
you’ll know the result, followed
by a visit to the Sir David Wallace
Arena last night to take on
Loughborough Lightning - again
you’ll know the result by now -
before returning to Hatfield next
Saturday to take on Team Bath.
COME AND SEE US…
For Gloucester fans who may be
reading this, do please also come
and say ‘hello’ to the Saracens
Supporters Association at our
base under what we fondly call
our Gazebo which is located near
the North Stand and right by The
Oasis. You can’t miss us - there’s
always a very large group in
attendance, chatting, having a
drink together, and, as ever, our
Matchday Team working hard to
help with membership enquiries,
members’ badge collections and
away ticket enquiries. We’d love
to see you and share thoughts on
today’s game, how the season’s
gone so far and what’s happening
in the rugby world. It goes
without saying, we’d love to see
our fellow Sarries fans too!!
JUST A REMINDER FOR ALL
VISITORS, THOUGH:
We will be at the Gazebo only
until 30 minutes before kick-off
and no later: it’s important for
everyone to remember that the
SSA Matchday Team is staffed
entirely by volunteers who are
fans just like everyone else so
we also need time to charge our
glasses, meet up with friends, get
to our seats or favourite standing
spot, and greet the players as
they run out from the tunnel, so
if you do have any membership,
ticketing or badge queries you’ll
need to come and see us in good
time.
ABOUT THE SSA…
If you do come to see us at
the Gazebo and you are not
an SSA member, why not join?
Membership is £10/season or £5
for juniors. In addition to social
events and organising ticket
allocations for away events,
we arrange meet ups at away
games and we have our monthly
newsletter with all sorts of
interesting articles!
We also have an SSA
representative on the Club’s
Supporters’ Forum, Nigel Eaton.
Members with points to raise
can contact him via email at
committee.ssa@outlook.com or
in person on match days at the
gazebo.
A STEP BACK IN TIME
NEXT WEEK
AS ALL THOUGHTS IN THE WAKE OF THE SIX NATIONS AND INVESTEC
CHAMPIONS CUP NOW TURN TO RETAINING THE GALLAGHER
PREMIERSHIP, WE LOOK BACK AT A GAME AGAINST GLOUCESTER
THAT PROVED CRUCIAL IN THE HISTORY OF SARACENS.
Back in 2011, the Cherry &
Whites travelled to Vicarage
Road on the back of a 41-41
draw against Leicester Tigers
at Welford Road. They were
third in the table and gunning
for one of the top two places
that were occupied by Tigers
and Sarries.
In those days, the Premiership
trophy had never found its
way into the trophy cabinet
at the club. It has been a
regular visitor ever since.
38
But back then there was
everything to play for.
Cometh the hour, cometh the
‘Men in Black’!
SARACENS 35
GLOUCESTER 12
VICARAGE ROAD
SUNDAY, 24 APRIL 2011
When you look back over
the names in the teams it
is incredible to think that
a 22-year-old Alex Goode
was just finding his feet and
both Owen Farrell and Jamie
George were climbing their
way to the top. Goode had
the goalkicking duties and
converted three of the four
tries and also kicked three
penalties for a match tally of
15 points.
Another familiar face and
name from that era is Mark
McCall – still striving for
excellence from his team
and trying to haul in more
silverware. A similar result to

39
the won back then in today’s
contest would be more than
welcome.
The irony of the result in
2013 was that it led to
Gloucester coming back to
Vicarage Road in the semifinals.
That was a much
tighter game with the west
countrymen wiping out a nine
point interval deficit to lead
10-9 going into the final 10
minutes.
On that occasion it was the
boot of Farrell that came to
the rescue as he knocked over
a fourth penalty in the 73rd
minute to salvage a 12-10
victory that sent the ‘Men in
Black’ into the Premiership
final, where they so famously
beat the Tigers 22-18 to lift
the most precious piece of
English rugby silverware for
the first time.
Today’s battle is all about
keeping on track to win
a magnificent seventh
title. May it be equally as
successful at 2011!

THE INTERVIEW
ELLIOT
DALY
ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL
ELLIOT DALY RECENTLY
SIGNED A NEW TWO-YEAR
CONTRACT WITH SARACENS
UNTIL THE END OF THE
2025/26 SEASON.

The 31-year-old joined
Sarries from Wasps in 2019,
making 64 appearances for
the club since. He was part
of the side that won the
Premiership last season,
scoring the crucial try in their
win over Sale Sharks in the
final at Twickenham.
Daly has scored 19 tries in
66 caps for England since
making his debut in 2016,
providing a versatile option
on the wing, in the centre or
at full-back.
“Saracens is a special club
and we have made some
42
incredible memories over
the last few years. I’ve loved
every minute of being part of
this club since I joined,” said
Daly.
His signature on a new
deal came even before the
ink had got dry on the new
contracts secured by the club
with Jamie George, Ben Earl
and Maro Itoje. The ‘Crown
Jewels’ have been secured
and new goals will be set for
next season.
No wonder Saracens
director of rugby, Mark
McCall, was delighted to
announce the good news.
“Elliot’s influence on and off
the field is growing all the
time and he will be a key
figure for us going forward.
He will also be a huge help
to our younger players, who
will benefit greatly from his
experience and rugby IQ,” said
McCall.
“Elliot is, on the one
hand, hugely driven and
competitive, always looking
for ways to improve and,
on the other, someone who
lifts the environment and
those around him with his
enthusiasm, positivity and
energy. We are lucky to have
him.”
Lucky indeed! Plenty of other
clubs would have loved to
have recruited a player who
can boast three Six Nations
titles (2016, 17, 20), one
Grand Slam (2016) and two
Triple Crowns (2016, 20) with
England, as well as silver
(2019) and bronze (2023)
medals at the Rugby World
Cup.
He is a former ‘Premiership
Young Player of the Season’
who was twice-nominated for
the ‘European Player of the
Year’ title. He was selected
in the 2016/17 ‘Premiership
Dream Team’ ahead of
starting all three Lions Tests
in the drawn series in New
Zealand.
Speaking of Daly and the
Lions, he is among a select
band of players who have
played both against and
for the Lions. He was in the
Barbarians team that met
the Lions in Hong Kong ahead
of the 2013 tour to Australia
and then played for the
tourists in 2013 and 2017.

43
OTHER ELLIOT DALY FACTS
• Born on 8 October 1992
in Croydon, he attended
Whitgift School.
• He was ‘Best Man’ at Jamie
George’s wedding.
• He played his first game
for Wasps in an Anglo-Welsh
Cup tie against Exeter
Chiefs in 2010 while still
at school, becoming the
club’s then-second youngest
representative.
• Daly played cricket for
Surrey and England U15 as a
fast-bowling all-rounder.
• He made his England debut
as a replacement for Owen
Farrell against Ireland in the
2016 Six Nations. England
won 21-10 and went on to win
the Grand Slam.
• He kicked a vital 52 metre
penalty for the Lions in their
draw against the All Blacks in
the 3rd Test to help his side
drawn the series and landed
an even bigger kick from 63
metres for England against
South Africa in Johannesburg
a year later.

Rugby 4 Life is the
Foundation’s grassroots
rugby project building the
game of rugby for children in
the community. The project
revolves around holding
tag rugby festivals at local
clubs which are officiated
by sport leaders from years
9, 10 and 11. These festivals
focus less on the competition
element of the game, but
work on developing skills,
understanding the sport, and
having fun!
The ultimate aim of
the festivals is to make
transitions easier to their
local rugby clubs. The
FOUNDATION
RUGBY 4 LIFE: CHANGING THE FACE OF
GRASSROOTS RUGBY
festivals help to familiarise
participants with their
surroundings by hosting the
festivals there, introduce the
club coaches and make their
first experience at the club
a positive one. Participants
leave the festival having had
a very positive experience
of rugby with an invitation
to return to the club for a
pathway session.
Rugby 4 Life is the only
project bringing rugby
to children outside of
their curriculum P.E. The
Foundation is committed to
breaking down the barriers
to participation in rugby,
growing the diversity of the
game at a grassroots level
and creating lifelong fans of
the sport.
Joining the ‘Rugby 4 Life’
project is simple. Interested
individuals can reach
out to their local School
Sports Network to inquire
about upcoming Saracens
Tag Festivals. For those
without a scheduled event
in their vicinity, contact
PROJECT
RUGBY
HITS 100,000
PARTICIPANTS!
47
Project Rugby is a grassroots
participation programme
delivered by Premiership
Rugby, in collaboration
with England Rugby and
Gallagher. It is designed to
introduce as many people
as possible to rugby and
increase access opportunities
for people from traditionally
underrepresented groups,
including those from low
socio-economic backgrounds
(LSEG), ethnically diverse
backgrounds (DEC), and
people with disabilities and
women and girls.
On the 12th of March,
participants from each
Premiership club took part
in a LSEG/DEC Festival
to celebrate the landmark
achievement of 100,000
participants being engaged in
the Project.
10 Students from local school,
St James Catholic school,
where over 270 students
have been coached rugby by
Saracens Project Officers
this year, were chosen to
represent Saracens Rugby
Club. Following the festival
at Staines RFC, where they
played their counterparts
from Sale, Bath, Bristol, and
Leicester, they had lunch,
and an awards presentation
in the Captains room at
Twickenham, before ending
the day by having a tour of
the Stadium.

However, Let’s face it, if Mako Vinipola told you what to do on a building site, you’d do it.

SEMI-FINAL
ROUND UP
SARACENS WOMEN RETURNED TO ACTION LAST
WEEKEND, WITH A THRILLING ALLIANZ CUP
SEMI-FINAL TRIUMPH AGAINST EXETER CHIEFS.
It had been a month since
the side had last played and,
with no less than 11 players
away on Six Nations Duty
and more away preparing for
the PAC4 series, there was a
different look and feel to the
Saracens side.
Despite several players being
away, there were still plenty
of big names on show, with
May Campbell and Lotte
Clapp captaining the side.
Sarries had shown
tremendous grit and heart to
qualify with home advantage
for the knockouts and, in
a week where club legend
Sonia Green announced her
retirement from the game,
they side were determined to
make sure she had one last
cup final to play in.
On a gloriously sunny day
in North London, Green
led the side out with her
godchildren, before she and
her teammates went to work.
It was some start from
Sarries, as they opened the
scoring early doors through
Bryony Cleall, off the back of
a powerful driving maul.
Cleall was at the double with
twenty minutes on the clock,
as she tidied up another
maul, to charge over the
line backwards with several
Exeter players clinging on for
dear life.
The visitors then received
two yellow cards in quick
60

61
succession, with Clara Nielson
and then Linde van der Velden
going to the bin, with a
penalty try awarded for van
der Velden’s intervention.
Exeter’s discipline was costing
them, with Demi Swann
seeing yellow, as they fell to
12 players.
Saracens took full advantage
too, with Sharifa Kasolo and
Akina Gondwe both going
over from close range before
the half was out to take their
side past 30 points on what
was turning into a superb
afternoon for Sarries.
Things got even better after
the break, as Lotte Clapp
chipped through and pounced
on an error by Brooke Bradley
to add a sixth, before the
momentum switched in
dramatic fashion.
May Campbell saw yellow at
the ruck, with Hope Rogers
bagging a brace and Nielson
another to reduce the gap.
Nielson scored again with five
minutes to go, before Demi
Swann crossed in the final
moments of the game, with
both Cleall and Kasolo in the
bin, but by that point, the
game was done.
With Bristol’s victory over
Gloucester-Hartpury the
following day, Saracens will
make the trip to Shaftesbury
Park on Sunday 28th April, as
they look to secure the Allianz
Cup title and with it, the first
silverware of the season.

SONIA
GREEN
AFTER 22 YEARS AND OVER
300 APPEARANCES, CLUB
LEGEND SONIA GREEN HAS
ANNOUNCED SHE WILL BE
RETIRING FROM THE GAME
AT THE END OF THE SEASON.
62

63
Green’s storied career has
taken her from Bramley Road
to StoneX Stadium and right
around the world, featuring
for Saracens, the Barbarians,
England A and captaining
England 7s.
Combining her playing career
with her role as Vice Principal
at Saracens High School in
recent years, Sonic has been
and will continue to be an
integral part of the fabric of
the Saracens family.
Reflecting on her incredible
career with Saracens, Green
explained that she is hanging
up her boots with memories
and friends that will last a
lifetime.
“After 22 incredible years with
Saracens, I am hanging up
my boots with a heart full
of gratitude and memories
that will last a lifetime. The
camaraderie, the battles, and
the victories have all shaped
me into the person I am
today. As I step off the field,
I carry with me the lessons
learned, the friendships
forged, and the legacy of a
proud Saracen. Thank you to
my teammates, coaches and
everyone behind the scenes
for an extraordinary journey.”
“Retirement may mark the
end of my playing days, but
it opens the door to new
adventures and opportunities.
I am excited to embrace the
next chapter in my life as well
as focusing on my role of Vice
Principal at Saracens High,
driving the school forward
and continuing to contribute
to the club that has given me
so much. Once a Saracen,
always a Saracen.”
Director of Rugby Alex
Austerberry has worked
with Green for a number of
years and praised the longserving
forward for all that
she has given to the club
and the game, expressing his
gratitude for the way she has
embodied what it means to
be a Saracen and helped instil
the values of the club for new
players coming through in
North London.
“I’ve been very lucky to share
a lot of my Saracens journey
with Sonic. She is someone
who cares immensely about
the club and the people
that are here, which is so
infectious. You can’t put
a value on what she has
brought to the club and what
she means to this club. What
she has done throughout her
career is quite remarkable
and it’s something that
I don’t think will ever be
matched.”
Green led the side out in
Saturday’s Allianz Cup semifinal
and will have a shot at
one more trophy on Sunday
28th in the cup final.
Green played 79 minutes,
before leaving the pitch
to a standing ovation and
she reflected on a brilliant
afternoon at home.
“The first half especially was
brilliant. There’s lots to work
on, but I’m really proud of the
girls. It was a really special
day playing in front of a great
crowd. We had some of the
older girls in the team that
I’ve played with for years, but
then it was amazing that
I got to play alongside the
future of Sarries as well. It
was a really special day and
I’m so pleased we came away
with a win against Exeter!”

A MATCH DAY IN THE
LIFE OF A PIONEER
VISITORS TO THE STONEX STADIUM WILL BE FAMILIAR WITH
THE SARACENS PIONEERS, THE BLUE-JACKETED, MATCH
DAY VOLUNTEERS WHO OFFER A UNIQUE APPROACH TO THE
CUSTOMER/SPECTATOR-FACING MATCH DAY EXPERIENCE.
Their primary responsibility
is the many safety
considerations around
the stadium, but it’s a
prerequisite that this
responsibility is delivered
with a friendly, welcoming
smile. We have a pool of 150
volunteers, some of whom
make up to 200-mile round
journeys just to be part of the
programme. Since Saracens
moved to StoneX, Pioneers
have been on duty at well
over 200 games involving
Saracens Men, Saracens
women, and several non-
Saracens fixtures. 34 of our
current volunteers have put
in over 100 appearances as
a Pioneer. The programme
has established an excellent
reputation, never more so
than when measured in the
most recent PRL ‘secret
shopper’ survey in which
the match day experience
at all premiership clubs was
assessed. Saracens and
the StoneX Stadium came
out in top place reflecting,
amongst other criteria, very
positively on the outstanding
contribution made by
Pioneers.
This is how a match day in the
life of a Pioneer unfolds.
Four hours before kick-off
time, the Pioneers start
to arrive at the stadium,
heading for the Volunteer
Centre in the 1876 Stand
where they meet the
Volunteer Support team
who will handle all
68
appropriate admin tasks for
the day. Once signed in, it’s
time for a belated breakfast,
to compensate for their
early starts and distances
travelled, and then it’s on
to the match day safety
briefing, which covers specific
information about match day
plans, safety matters and
anything else that may be
relevant to the day ahead.
With kick-off just under
3 hours away, and the
Pioneers head out to their
designated locations. The
Spectator Services teams
move to the stands, to
undertake safety checks, and
prepare to welcome home
and visiting supporters.
Some of the Meet & Greet
team are transported to
the local stations, Mill Hill
East, Mill Hill Broadway and
Edgware, where they help
direct supporters to the free
shuttle services. Others are
located in Pursley Road to
assist with directions from
the bus stops. The Ticketing
team, armed with their ticket
scanners, take up position at
the stadium gates, and other
Pioneers are preparing to
meet and greet spectators
and hospitality guests on the
Piazza, the Oasis, and the
Olympic Bar. Our Assistance
Team will provide help, where
needed, with access to the
disability platforms.
Two and a half hours before
kick-off, everyone is in place
for when the gates open. As
kick-off time approaches,
the stadium gets super
busy as spectators head
for their seats. Once all the
spectators are settled and
the game is underway, the
spectator services teams
will be keeping a close eye on
the stands, but in general,
it’s time to take a bit of
breather until the half-time
whistle blows. At this point,
spectator traffic builds
extensively, with a rush to the
food and drink concessions,
and the toilets! The second
half of the game brings a bit
more respite until the final
whistle, when it’s necessary
to hold the masses back from
the pitch whist the players
complete a lap of honour,
before releasing the pitch to
a multitude of impromptu
rugby games! At this point,
the signal to stand down
is relayed, and it’s then a
case of heading back to the
Volunteer Centre to check out
at the end of a 6 hour shift.
We’re always recruiting, so if
the prospect of volunteering
with Saracens appeals to
you, we would love to hear
from you: drop an email to
pioneers@saracens.net. It’s
a unique opportunity to get
involved, make new friends,
make a valued contribution,
to get an insight, and play a
part in some of the ‘behindthe-scenes’
activity of your
favourite team.

IT WAS AN HISTORIC OCCASION AT OVO
ARENA WEMBLEY TWO WEEKS AGO, AS
SARACENS MAVERICKS HOSTED THE
FIRST EVER NETBALL SUPER LEAGUE
FIXTURE AT THE ICONIC VENUE AGAINST
MANCHESTER THUNDER AS THEY PLAYED
THEIR PART IN THE HEADLINER
With a crowd of over
2500 in attendance and
entertainment throughout,
this was a day to remember!
The day kicked off with The
Support Act Festival, as
Wodson Park and North
Bucks County took to the
court in a two-goal epic,
before celebrities and famous
netball faces including
Tamsin Greenway and Sasha
Corbin took to the court for
the #Shoot4Pink Charity
Netball match, in aid of the
Pink Ribbon Foundation. An
entertaining contest finished
level at 6-apiece, but more
importantly, the crowd and
those involved had been
thoroughly entertained by the
action on court!
With stilt-walkers, a DJ and
a saxophonist all bringing the
vibes, Saracens Mavericks
took to the court against
table-toppers Manchester
Thunder.
In the end, the visitors
proved too strong on the
day, despite an incredibly
impressive showing from
young Centre Indya Masser,
who looked at home on the
biggest stage.
As Head Coach Camilla
Buchanan said though, the
day was about so much more
than the result.
“Days like this, we wanted
to make it a whole family
experience and give people
value for what they’re coming
for. Not just the elite game,
but the charity game. It’s
incredible because people get
to see their fan favourites
on the court again - it’s a
70

71
fantastic way to put on an
event. And for the kids it’s
brilliant - isn’t that every kid’s
dream to be playing here at
Wembley? If you play this
game and you see heroes on
TV and then you get to play
on the same court as them
- it’s what dreams are made
of! It’s so great we can do
that and great for netball at
the grassroots level. And it
adds to the enjoyment of the
whole family event.”
The crowd cheered on
Mavericks throughout, and
Buchanan hoped that the
crowd of 2573 in supporting
her side was a sign of things
to come.
“The crowd was brilliant
and that’s what it’s about.
We relish in occasions like
this where you get your
home supporters here and
many more. They really are
that eighth player, and that
energy is something the
players can really draw on. I
hope there are many more of
these arena games to come.”
Mavericks lost out in a
thriller to London Pulse on
Monday evening and took on
champions Loughborough
Lightning last night. With
the second half of the season
now getting underway,
Camilla Buchanan’s side look
like they are starting to find
their groove.

HIGH SCHOOL
WHEN
SARACENS HIGH
SCHOOL OPENED
IN 2018 IMAAN
WAS THERE,
WEARING THE
RED-TRIMMED
BLACK BLAZER
WITH PRIDE.
72
Seven years later, this bright
student will become one of
the first alumnus of the free
school as she heads off to
study Chemical Engineering
at university.
Imaan is studying A Levels
in Chemistry, Maths and
Geography. She isn’t studying
A Level PE and she doesn’t
play rugby. And that’s okay!
While belonging to the
Saracens family benefits the
pupils in many ways - not
least receiving a character
education soaked in the
values shared with the club
- the school isn’t a rugby
academy but a non-selective
school that places all subjects
on an equal footing.
In a school that celebrates
languages as much as sports,
as much as humanities as
much as sciences, it will be
exciting to see the array of
futures the young adults
pursue. The dedicated staff
are eager to see Saracens
High School alumni thriving
in every profession, trade and
workplace.
However, with the popularity
of science A Levels, as well
as T Levels in Health and
THE DEDICATED STAFF
ARE EAGER TO SEE
SARACENS HIGH
SCHOOL ALUMNI
THRIVING IN EVERY
PROFESSION, TRADE
AND WORKPLACE.
Digital Studies, it is unlikely
Imaan will be the only
student seeking a career in
STEM (science, technology,
engineering and maths).
In Addition to outstanding
teaching, there are a number
of initiatives that promote
science at the school.
Exposure to science
workplaces helps students
imagine a diversity of futures
for themselves. Imaan and
her friends have already
visited a range of workplaces
during their Lower Sixth
year, from the historic Royal
Institution to cosmetic giant,
L’Oreal.

73
Imaan with Miss Howard, science teacher
However, it was practical
experience in a university
super lab that most captured
this Somali-heritage
student’s imagination:
‘One particular highlight was
visiting London Metropolitan
University to make aspirin,
which provided a hands-on
opportunity to engage in
laboratory work and see
the practical application of
chemistry.’
It also helps A Level chemists
like Imaan to speak to
teachers with different
workplace experiences.
Among the staff team there
is experience of scientific
research, university lecturing
and work with human
reproduction.
Scientist of the Half Term
is an award that motivates
pupils to apply themselves to
their studies. STEM club on
Thursday lunchtimes provides
a forum for young people to
further develop their interest
in these fields.
Science Week is a high point
in the academic year, when
the whole school engages
in activities that celebrate
STEM subjects. The theme
of this year’s national
Science Week was Time,
and the panoply of special
events helped win another
generation of scientists.
There were workshops
delivered by The National
Space Academy, a fascinating
presentation by prominent
scientist Dr Wilson, as well as
experiments studying rates of
chemical reactions.
However, the stand-out
attraction were the rare
breed chickens that hatched
in the incubator being
temporarily housed on a
science lab workbench. Cute,
fluffy chicks are a sure-fire
method of engaging people
of all ages in science!
The first school in the
Saracens Multi-Academy
Trust will complete its
final year of growth this
September. The Sixth Form
offers subjects and courses
for all tastes, with T Levels
and Pre-Apprenticeships
available as well as the more
traditional A Levels. Sixth
Form interviews with current
Year 11 pupils indicate that we
will indeed see alumni of the
school thriving in every sector
of the workplace, including
science.

COMMUNITY
NEWS
As we get back into the run
in to the end of the season,
we are today hosting the
Saracens leg of the Defender
Cup. This is Premiership
Rugby’s national grassroots
rugby programme supported
by Defender, which delivers a
series of U11 and U12 festivals
though its shareholder Clubs
throughout the season.
For each U11 and U12 team
entering the Defender
Premiership Rugby Cup,
there is the chance to win
an exclusive trip to the
Premiership Rugby Final, at
Twickenham Stadium. The
events are designed to provide
aspiring young players with
the chance to play competitive
fixtures in a format to aid
their development, all within
the spirit of rugby’s core
values of teamwork, respect,
enjoyment, discipline, and
sportsmanship. Allowing
them to learn vital lessons,
that will serve them both on
and off the rugby pitch. Since
the tournaments inception
in 2008, the Defender
Premiership Rugby Cup
has helped over 100,000
youngsters discover rugby
through the annual rugby
events, with some realising
their dreams of going on to
play for Premiership Rugby
clubs.
We have just come off the
back of a busy Easter break
which saw over 900 children
over 9 days participate in
camps throughout the South
East, working with both old
and new clubs to us. It was
a fantastic Easter and we
look forward to releasing the
summer dates soon at https://
With one more regular
season home game left
this season we are looking
forward to playing Sale on
the last game of the season
where we host over 40
U7s/U8s teams as well as
several large groups that
will participate in the match
day activations including The
Guard of Honour, The Big
Shirt waving, and playing on
the pitch at half time. If you
would like your club to come
on mass to a game next year
where you can participate
in these opportunities, then
please contact community@
saracens.net to express your
clubs interest in a club take
over day.
the former home of the Earls
of Clarendon is situated just
18 miles from London, and is
home to an award-winning
spa, championship golf
course and mouth-watering
restaurants. This staycation
is for all the family, bringing a
rugby twist into your holiday.
Meet some of the stars from
Saracens, as well as your
children being coached by
them, and a trip to StoneX
Stadium will prove a highlight
for any rugby fan. Within the
hotel there are activities for
all, whether that be action
COMING NEXT . . .
CONGRATULATIONS TO NORTHAMPTON SAINTS AND
HARLEQUINS ON REACHING THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE INVESTEC
CHAMPIONS CUP. UNFORTUNATELY, WE DIDN’T GET PAST
THE ROUND OF 16 STAGE AND EXETER CHIEFS WERE BEATEN
BY TOULOUSE IN THE QUARTERS. WITH SIX GALLAGHER
PREMIERSHIP TEAMS REACHING THE LAST 16 IT ONCE AGAIN
UNDERLINED THE QUALITY OF THE TOURNAMENT.
Now all the focus for Mark McCall’s squad is on
reaching the play-offs and going on to successfully
defend our title at Twickenham. The goal is an 11th
Premiership final and seventh title. Retaining the
silverware would be another huge achievement.
The big home win over the Quins last time out at
home was a huge boost, although that was followed
by defeat at Franklin’s Gardens to table-topping
Northampton Saints. Today sees bottom-but-one
Gloucester come to the StoneX Stadium, although
they will be buoyed by their EPCR Challenge Cup win
over Ospreys that saw them reach the semi-finals
last weekend.
After today there are still three more league games
to go as the pressure mounts at the top end of the
table for not only a play-off place, but a home semifinal.
The ‘Men in Black’ have to head to ‘The Rec’ on
Friday night for a crucial battle with second placed
Bath. It would be great to see as many of you as
possible make the road trip to support the team for
that vital clash.
We’re back in the west country on 11 May for a game
against Bristol Bears before bringing our regular
campaign to an end against Sale Sharks on 18 May.
That will be a repeat of last season’s Premiership
final and could well be Owen Farrell’s final outing at
the StoneX. Let’s ensure we fill the ground to pay our
respects to one of the greatest clubmen of all-time!
As ever, you can play a part in helping the team stay
on track for another semi-final place, so please buy
your tickets now!
79
There may be a load
of Saracens players
involved in the
Guinness Women’s
Six Nations at the
moment, but there
is plenty for them all
to look forward to
once the international
tournament ends.
Alex Austerberry’s
team have already
reached the Allianz
Premiership Cup Final
after knocking out the
holders Exeter Chiefs
and now have their
sights set firmly on a
home semi-final in the
league.
They will have a great
chance to lay down a
marker for that when
they welcome welcome
Sale Sharks to the
StoneX on Saturday, 11
May. They then take on
the unbeaten league
leaders, and reigning
champions, Gloucester
Hartpury, at home on
Saturday 25 May.
What a game and
what an occasion that
promises to be. Don’t
miss it – come down
and back the girls!
