Nestled atop a dune overlooking the Atlantic
Ocean, this home follows the natural contours
of the environment. Thoughtforms collaborated
closely with architect Michael Price to
balance the trade-offs between aesthetic
and a robust building envelope to withstand
exposure to the weather of the Atlantic.
The resulting concrete, metal, glass and wood
exterior shelters the bright and warm interior
spaces while preserving beautiful views and
the elemental feel of the home.
The board-formed concrete that transitions
seamlessly between interior and exterior
spaces was painstakingly crafted with handlined
forms, where the impression of the grain
of the wood is evident throughout.
As our built environment moves toward
healthier, more comfortable, all-electric systems,
on-site power generation is becoming a
more common component. Here, solar panels
are hidden from view on the flat roof but still
enjoy unfettered access to the sun above.
With advances in panel design and associated
production efficiencies – as well as incentives
– this system, like others, pays for itself,
becoming a net-positive investment in
the property.
What we learned while building this
home is carried forward so we are ‘always
building better.’
A SEASIDE
PROPERTY LEVELS
UP IN MORE WAYS
THAN ONE.
Nothing says vacation mode like an immediate view of the
sea—it’s the ultimate symbol of departure. Though the
sounds of seagulls and the scent of salty air were cues of a
seaside locale, this Cape Cod beach house was obscured
by its own limitations: a nondescript entry, obstructed sea
views and untapped potential on all three floors.
To solve those issues and infuse the home with their own
essence, the homeowners called on ARCHWRIGHT Fine
Home Builders, Catalyst Architecture and Interiors, and
Mrs. Paranjape Design + Interiors to perform an extensive
renovation, carried out in two phases. Though phase one
revitalized second floor bedrooms and covered muchneeded
repairs, phase two served as a driving force in
unlocking the property’s full potential.
“From an architectural standpoint, the central part of the
design was the approach and arrival into the house,” says
Todd Carson, Co-Vice President and Architect at Catalyst,
noting that the original entry was crowded by an obstructive
staircase and adjoining wall. “The homeowners were willing
to do whatever it took to move that stair.”
Though no easy feat, the strategic maneuver created a
sense of openness and connectivity, allowing natural light
and sweeping ocean views to permeate throughout the
space. “That stair was really a collaborative effort, and it
was magnificent to see everybody work together to make
it come to life,” shares Galen Farrar, Project Manager at
ARCHWRIGHT. “It connects the home from top to bottom,
both visually and physically.”
Just beyond the stair, an open concept kitchen, dining, and
living space was also designed to take in the views, with
the addition of large windows and sliding doors. “It’s not
your typical great room,” says Kurt, Co-Vice President and
Architect at Catalyst. “We think it’s more interesting.”
With continuity and functionality in mind, Lori Paranjape
designed the interiors to embrace the home’s newfound
sense of space. “We didn’t want stark beginnings and
endings. We wanted it to feel like a through and through
experience from the door all the way through to the
outside,” says Paranjape.
bostondesignguide.com 15
Once the central stair was redesigned and relocated,
the open concept living space reveals stunning bay
views from the moment the front door is opened.
16
bostondesignguide.com
The striking stair design connects all three levels of the home while also creating
a sense of transparency, with glimpses of the water visible from every vantage
point. It features grain-matched oak treads, transparent glass guardrails with
seamless turns, and a smooth, radius-edge handrail. Provided by Blushower
Door, the glass panels were positioned by the ARCHWRIGHT team to conceal
hardware, which affords a sleek look.
bostondesignguide.com 17
The childrens’
bedrooms underwent a
transformation of their
own, where the focus
was on creating cozy
spaces for the family
and their frequent
summer visitors.
Wallpaper was key to
adding texture and
personality to each
space, creating a sense
of departure from their
year-round bedrooms.
18
bostondesignguide.com
Throughout the home, matte finishes, natural tones, and
mid-range neutrals mingle with sleek, versatile furnishings
that contribute to a relaxed, coastal ambiance. “We really
had to consider how the family would be using the space,
and then designing it in a way that would allow them to live
really beautifully,” emphasizes Paranjape.
The kitchen, with a separate workspace and spacious
pantry, features open shelving and a servery window, and
boasts a stunning Naica Quartzite backsplash that carries
into the counter tops and hood. “To execute the kitchen
hood, we needed to be very precise with the dimensions
to make it happen,” notes Brian Lafauce, Owner/President
of ARCHWRIGHT. “The design selections were very fun to
work with, and even more fun to see finished.”
Though the extensive undertaking required foresight,
collaboration, and immaculate planning, the striking result
speaks to the team’s stellar synergy. As Paranjape reflects,
“It was one of those wonderful experiences where the right
players were on the team.”
bostondesignguide.com 19
Designed for living beautifully,
functionality was paramount in
every facet of the design.
“The design team chose timeless, contemporary pieces from Kallista for
the kitchen in this home. The Juxtapose pot filler in matte black is the
perfect complement to the full slab backsplash wall and hood. It makes
a subtle statement and truly earns its name in this space,” says Patti
Jones, VP of Retail Sales at Snow + Jones. “The minimalist design of
the ONE kitchen faucet adds architectural interest without taking away
from the wall of windows. Pairing this faucet with the oversized Multiere
workstation kitchen sink makes this space extremely functional.”
CAPE COD
RETREAT
Salty bay breezes and a lush native greenscape encircle this idyllic
Cape Cod retreat overlooking the North Bay. Designed to flow with
the main home and newly built cabana, the outdoor living space
came alive with Mulcahy Design Group’s exterior amenity concept.
“The goal was to create a cohesive exterior design that would tie in
the existing house and pool to the newly constructed cabana,” says
Thomas Mulcahy, President of Mulcahy Design Group.
“IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE NATURAL
LANDSCAPE SEAMLESSLY TRANSITIONS WITH
THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT.”
Like many Cape Cod residents, the
homeowners desired an intimate yearround
retreat that would also support
larger gatherings in the summertime. With
a seamless flow to and from the cabana
and main home, the expanded pool deck
and upper dining terrace provide ample
space for entertaining. Dedicated areas
for a cozy firepit and an outdoor kitchen
offer functional enclaves within the space.
The outdoor kitchen is built into the walls
of the stone terrace, with a perfectly
placed herb garden adjacent to both the
terrace and main house entry.
The symmetrical pool deck was designed
to tie in the newly built cabana to the
existing pool, and to maximize poolside
lounging space. Off of the cabana, a wood
deck inlay serves as a design solution for
proper drainage that also adds texture
and interest. The cabana features floor-toceiling
nano doors and an outdoor shower
with intricate stone details.
“A lot of my projects are conservation
related,” says Mulcahy. “It is important
that the natural landscape seamlessly
transitions with the built environment.”
With a portion of the property on
conservation land, native plantings were
added to restore existing meadows and
pathways to enhance the wildlife corridor,
ensuring the coastal retreat exists in
harmony with the stunning natural site for
years to come.
its history while
Salt and Light
28
bostondesignguide.com
Situated on land once used as the town’s
Saltworks and beaming with rhythms of
natural light, this property captures the
essence of its namesake, Salt and Light.
Graced by history and reimagined for
modern living, the home is a seamless
blend of new construction and historic
renovation.
Like many before them, the homeowners were captivated
by the salt-tinged site, and the historic home that once
stood there. With hopes to renovate and restore, they
enlisted the expertise of design/build firm Architectural
Design (AD) Inc., led by Peter Haig, Principal Architect,
and David Bushnell, Construction Supervisor. Upon further
investigation, structural limitations deemed much of the
house unsalvageable, and a myriad of added elements
weakened its historic integrity.
bostondesignguide.com 29
“We did a lot of research into the history of the house,”
says Haig. “We discovered that there was really only one
portion of the house that was of historical and architectural
significance, and that was the very oldest piece of it.” With
permission from the Old King’s Highway Regional Historic
District Commission, the original 1787 wing was salvaged to
flow alongside a newly built, connected home. “We developed
a plan with the homeowners in which the new house
would be the main piece, and the 1787 component would
be a guest house addition to the side of it,” says Haig.
To make space for new construction, the build team
carefully lifted and moved the historic wing, enclosing
the existing old frame with new structure and taking care
to salvage original materials wherever possible. The new
home, with a splay view of the marshlands, was carefully
positioned to optimize the surrounding natural beauty,
anchored by a octagonal turret. “We were thrilled to be
able to adjust the angle of the home so that it looks out
over the marsh,” shares the homeowner.
From the strategic placement of windows to thoughtful
design elements that capture the play of light on the
marsh, every aspect of the house is imbued with a sense
of orientation and purpose, where modern amenities
coexist with timeless charm. Inside, the light soaked open
living space features a custom kitchen flanked by formal
and informal dining and seating areas designed with a
mix of new furnishings and beloved antiques from the
homeowners’ previous home. “I like a bit of whimsy in
the decor, but I do tend toward the traditional,” says the
homeowner, who worked alongside Helen Baker Interiors to
marry the old with the new. “I’m just very happy with being
surrounded by things that I love.”
The kitchen, custom designed by Artisan Kitchens, amplifies
the home’s natural luminance, with an array of mirrors
that adorn the upper cabinets and discreetly conceal the
refrigerator and pantry. “Given the amount of light that
comes in, we intentionally selected a satin finish Taj Mahal
stone on the countertops because it is soft, beautiful, and
avoids glare,” says Amy Britton, owner and founder of
Artisan Kitchens. Thermador appliances, courtesy of Crane
Appliance, fit seamlessly into Britton’s design. “The kitchen
32
Navigating through layers of history, the newly built
home honors its historic precedent with a blend of classic
elements and contemporary amenities.
appliance selection ties into the project perfectly,” says
Brendan Crane, Vice President of Crane Appliance. “The
Thermador range garners both state-of-the-art functionality
and a classic, timeless style.”
A brilliant fusion of then and now, the home’s historic
charm and modern allure shine equally as bright. Against a
backdrop of ever-changing hues of land and sea, Salt and
Light illuminates the path forward for design endeavors
rooted in reverence for the past and vision for the future.
The home’s interiors feature
a mix of new furniture and
beloved antiques from the
homeowners’ previous home. A
variety of window treatments
serve to bring the outdoors in,
including rolling wizard screens
and a Dutch-style front door.
In the compact mudroom,
also custom designed by
Artisan Kitchens, every inch
was maximized for efficiency,
practicality and style; a black
mist granite bench provides a
practical perch for outdoor gear,
while custom pull-out cabinetry
caters to the family dog.
bostondesignguide.com 33
Though much of the
original home was deemed
unsalvageable, the new
design honors its historic
roots wherever possible.
Championing the philosophy of
adaptive reuse, AD Architects
salvaged the home’s original
1787 wing and reimagined it as
a multipurpose guest room and
study. Original ceilings, beams,
and wood from the floors were
repurposed from the original
home, and reconfigured to
create high ceilings suited for
modern living. A new threesided
gas fireplace and stone
chimney occupy the former
chimney’s central location,
delineating the guest room and
office/seating area.
SERVING THE SEACOAST, LAKES REGION AND NORTH SHORE
Riverfront Charm
A PERFECTLY POSITIONED HOME IS DESIGNED AND BUILT FOR EASY LIVING.
Situated on a jutting peninsula in beautiful northern New
England is a newly built shingle-style home that, with
seamless synergy, maximizes well appointed living spaces
with iconic river views. The project, led by Betsy Bassett
Interiors in collaboration with Tucker Associates, TMS
Architects, and Jewett Farms + Co., was an exercise in
expertise and teamwork from inception to completion.
Aligning early in the process, the team set out to create a
sophisticated yet relaxed home for their clients. “Working
together on space planning early on is important because
you need to get the fundamentals right,” says Betsy
Bassett, Owner of Betsy Bassett Interiors. “And then we get
to embellish with the beautiful details.”
Michael Del Sesto, Owner of Tucker Associates, echoes that
ethos. “We like to be brought in early in the design process,
alongside the interior designer and architect, to work
through details, and outline design elements together.”
The home blends northern New England coastal and
traditional elements, featuring a charming gambrel roofline
and a peaceful landscape that allows the natural gradient of
the land to meld effortlessly with riverbanks beyond.
bostondesignguide.com 39
“As you walk through the front door, a magnificent view of
the river unfolds in front of you,” says Del Sesto. “The home
is really beautifully situated, and every room captures the
best view it possibly can.”
On the interiors, an open floor plan balances clean lines
with traditional finishes that elevate the highly livable home,
designed with gathering in mind. “We designed it with a
sense of day-to-day elegance that would also be relaxed
enough for when their children and grandchildren come to
visit,” says Bassett. “The house lives bigger than it is. It’s
intimate enough for just the two of them, but when family
comes, it still feels spacious and comfortable.”
A palette of calming blue tones, bespoke fabric selections,
textured wallpaper, and custom finishes imbue the home
with personality and timelessness. “I like my designs to be
transitional, and also have some staying power so it’s not
just a design of the moment,” Bassett emphasizes.
The kitchen and pantry, with cabinetry custom designed by
the Bassett team and crafted by design/build firm Jewett
Farms + Co., share matching quartzite countertops and
hexagon tile backsplashes. The brilliant blue pantry—often
the place to be at parties and gatherings—features brass
hardware, metallic grasscloth wallpaper, and a Mercury
glass geometric light fixture.
Quality cabinetry was a major part of the design not only
in the kitchen and pantry areas but also throughout the
rest of the home. “We feel honored to have been part of
the project and take great pride in creating spaces where a
family’s most important moments take place,” shares Mike
Myers, Owner and Principal of Jewett Farms + Co.
The living room and adjacent sun room, a sea of serene
blue, taupe, and pearl, features hand blocked drapes
and a raffia wrapped coffee table. Bassett’s trick to
cohesive interiors is knowing where to start. “We like to
find individual pieces that are artisanal, interesting, and
nuanced, and use those as a starting point in creating the
overall palette for each room,” Bassett notes.
bostondesignguide.com 43
“Collaboration,” Del Sesto reflects. “That’s the best part
of the whole thing.” A seamless synergy from beginning
to end, the project symbolizes the magic of teamwork
and a new chapter for the happy homeowners.
With each
room capturing
the best view
possible, Bassett’s
nuanced palette
encapsulates
a distinctively
northern New
England coastal
ambiance.
NATURE’S EMBRACE
Embedded in the treescape, a
contemporary home is built against
a backdrop of living art.
48
bostondesignguide.com
A
vision of harmony between architecture and nature,
this recently constructed contemporary home is
as striking as it is serene. The home, designed
by Charles Rose Architects and built by Sea-
Dar Construction, honors the site’s inherent beauty by
maximizing its connection with the landscape.
“The clients wanted to create something that was very
site-specific,” says Charles Rose, Principal at Charles Rose
Architects. The homeowners, who also owned the previous
home on the property—an aging structure that was
disconnected from its natural surroundings—were keen to
start anew.
“The intent with this project was to create a new space
for the next generation of their family to enjoy,” explains
Amanda Gross, Project Manager at Sea-Dar Construction.
The project included a full tear-down of the existing
structure, a poignant symbol of passing the torch.
“One of the goals was to create a more dynamic
relationship between the interior spaces and the exterior,”
notes Rose. Designed with durability and minimal
maintenance in mind, it features an Alaskan yellow cedar
exterior. The choice of plank siding over traditional cedar
shingles infuses a contemporary flair to the coastal property.
Inside, a sweep of vast windows immerses occupants into
the billowing canopy of trees on the south side of the
property. The layout of the home—an intentional inversion
of the norm—places the primary family living spaces on the
top floor, where the tree canopy can be fully experienced.
An open concept kitchen, living, and dining space, and
one of two primary suites complete the upper level,
where sculptural architecture conveys a treehouse motif.
Stacked atop each other, the two primary suites both offer
unobstructed forest views.
bostondesignguide.com 49
Crafted with precision by
Sea-Dar’s in-house team, every
element of the deck—from
the spacing of the posts to
the dimensions of the wooden
slats—was carefully curated to
create the final result. From the
main deck, a staircase—with
metal work installed by Paradis
MetalWorks—leads to a rooftop
deck, which offers a vantage
point toward the ocean in the
distance. Outdoor living areas
This floorplan was also a strategic
move to optimize energy efficiency. In
summer, the foliage shades the house,
reducing glare and solar heat gain,
while in winter, the bare branches
allow ample sunlight.
“The windows were one of the big
parts of this project,” Gross remarks,
noting the windows were largely
sourced from Sierra Pacific and
Loewen. “We put a lot of time into
making sure we got those right.”
To best make use of the site,
the exterior entry sequence was
carefully designed. A central openair
passageway guides visitors to
enter the home on the forested
southern side of the house, avoiding
a neighboring parking lot on the
northern edge.
“There is a sense that this home will
eventually recede into the landscape,”
says Rose. “It is a very muted, stoic,
quiet building.” Thoughtfully designed
to create an intimate, ethereal
connection with the immediate
landscape, the home transcends the
ordinary to allow nature’s embrace to
be felt at every turn.
Dreamscape
A reimagined outdoor
haven on Fox Island.
56
bostondesignguide.com
Osterville’s Fox Island is a one-of-a-kind oasis with
exceptional views of the marshlands, rivers, bays, and
vast expanse of the ocean beyond. On the island—
which is occupied by just four residences—this
7-acre estate blends luxury and functionality throughout
its transformed landscape, designed by Sudbury Design
Group and maintained by Joyce Landscaping.
What once stood as a raw stretch of land with an aging
structure, the property was reimagined as an all-encompassing
family retreat designed for leisure, relaxation, and
entertainment. “The first step of the process was diving into
the functionality of the outdoor spaces, and learning how
the clients were planning to use them,” says Mike Coutu,
President of Sudbury Design Group.
A pool house, complete with a bathroom and changing
area, seamlessly integrates with an outdoor kitchen,
pool, spa, and seating areas. Just steps away, a tennis
court, barn, and putting green complete the outdoor
recreation space. “The key was to incorporate lots of
gathering spaces that could each function independently,”
says Coutu. From intimate gathering spots to sprawling
entertainment areas, the property caters to every
occasion, with strategically placed plantings and
hardscape elements delineating each zone.
bostondesignguide.com 57
Although the idyllic results speak for themselves, the
permitting process posed unique challenges, as Fox
Island fell under local conservation restrictions. “As
beautiful as the natural surroundings are, they needed
to be protected,” says Coutu. “That was an integral
part of the design.” The team navigated these hurdles
with finesse, implementing mitigation measures to
protect the island’s precious ecosystems. Protective
plantings, carefully selected to complement the
natural surroundings, create a buffer zone between
the developed areas and the protected wilderness,
ensuring minimal impact on the environment.
“It’s a beautiful property with different elevation
changes,” says Chris Joyce, President of Joyce Landscaping.
“Preserving the natural topography helped
to enhance the landscape.” Joyce Landscaping lent
their expertise to soften the hardscapes with lush,
vibrant plantings including multi-flora roses, traditional
hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, inkberry, roses,
linden trees, boxwood, and lowbush blueberries. To
add a touch of rustic charm, finely crafted AZEK fences
and gates were provided by Walpole Outdoors. The
hardscape features include a pea stone driveway, fieldstone
accents, and barefoot-friendly imported granite
decking. The crisp white pergola, extending from the
main house, offers a shaded sanctuary to enjoy sunset
views over the bay on the west-facing terrace.
With a refined mix of hardscape and
softscape, this timeless landscape design
provides dedicated areas to enjoy every
facet of the natural beauty of Fox Island.
WINDOWS TO
A coastal
Rhode Island estate
brings the outdoors in.
THE WORLD
bostondesignguide.com
A dream realized, this compound-style home in coastal
Rhode Island sits atop a 50-acre stretch of farmlands
and rolling hills overlooking the ocean. The site, with its
commanding 360-degree views and high ocean winds,
posed both challenges and opportunities for homeowner/
designer Karen Clarke and trusted distributor Horner
Millwork, who provided top-grade windows, exterior and
interior doors, custom stairs, and more.
“It is a beautiful but windy site,” Clarke notes. “We always
envisioned being able to take advantage of the views of the
ocean, pond, and farmlands.” By leveraging the flexibility
of Kolbe product lines, Horner Millwork integrated the
Ultra Series and ultra-modern VistaLuxe ® line of windows
to frame the diverse land and sea vistas, inviting nature to
become an integral part of the living experience.
The home blends traditional and modern architecture,
with expansive floor-to-ceiling glass elements that create
transparency throughout the home. A west-facing screen
porch offers an open-air retreat with sunset views, featuring
motorized Phantom Screens installed by Horner Millwork.
The horizontal screens are a departure from typical vertical
screens, and blend seamlessly with the overall design.
Though clean lines create a sleek aesthetic throughout
the home, fieldstone accents offer a touch of rustic
coastal charm.
A protected courtyard, nestled strategically between the
home’s distinct wings, features a contemplative garden
filled with lush plantings and stone features sourced from
the property itself. “In the garden, each window features an
operable awning to allow ventilation in a protected area to
avoid high ocean breezes on the other three sides,” shares
Peter Landolfi, Architectural Sales Representative at Horner
Millwork. “We take a lot of pride in the details.”
A proponent of sustainable and green design, Clarke
prioritized energy efficiency by implementing a geothermal
heating system, 53-panel solar array, and opting for a glass
package upgraded for energy performance. “We were very
interested in being as green as possible,” Clarke states.
To further preserve the beauty of the site, a barn on the
property was reconstructed with its original cupola design
and weathervane, remaining an iconic landmark visible
across the landscape.
8 Pro Tips
For Design
Success
A well thought out design plan can truly transform the home. To get it right, it’s best to consult
the experts. Industry leader Mark Haddad, Founder and President & Principal Interior Designer
at Interiology Design Co., shares his expertise. From aesthetics and functionality to keeping the
budget and timeline in check, these tips will ensure a smooth process from start to finish.
Be Open to Alternatives in Design.
When thinking about a space within your home, it’s easy
to see what you are used to, but with updated furnishings,
colors or overall style – think of swapping your existing
sofa for a new sectional. It’s much more difficult to envision
your space in a completely new way. As an example, we
created a design that moved our client’s laundry to an
under-utilized space on their second floor, allowing us to
create a huge new mudroom off of their existing kitchen.
When we design client spaces, we start with a clean slate
and offer three unique experiences. We start with an
introductory plan, where things are located more or less
where they are today, a midway design that makes some
more significant changes, and then an out of the box plan
that offers something completely new. By having three
distinct options, clients have the flexibility to choose their
favorite features of each, and most projects end up with a
hybrid plan that integrates elements of all three options. It’s
so important for clients to remain open to different design
alternatives and not put limitations on the functionality or
creativity of the design.
Consider Value Versus Cost.
Selecting high quality products is of the utmost importance
in any home renovation, because buying less expensive, but
often inferior, products ends up costing more money in the
end. A perfect example of this is plumbing fixtures. Faucets
from a home improvement warehouse cost less, but the
interior components are often made of plastic, the finishes
scratch or peel easily, and there’s a strong chance you’ll
need to replace it within a few years. A faucet we select
may cost 4 or 5 times more, however, it has high quality
components, is backed by a strong manufacturer’s warranty,
and shouldn’t need replacing (until you choose to renovate
again!). We always show our clients reputable products at
different price points so they can choose which items they
want to splurge on, and which they’re happy with at a more
modest price.
Working with Vetted Vendors = Success.
The internet has opened up new suppliers for almost
everything, and the choices are often limitless. However,
one of the key benefits of working with a designer is the
established relationships we have with manufacturers,
suppliers and contractors. We know who will stand behind
their products and who won’t, and we handle the details
should something arrive damaged or need replacing, often
without our clients even knowing.
Plan for the Unknown.
Quality is never an accident; it results from intelligent effort
and experience. We are a New England based design
firm which means we deal primarily with remodeling older
homes, some of which can date back to the 1800s. That
said, historic homes are often built more soundly than
newer construction from the 1970s through mid-1990s.
We recommend clients keep a portion of their planned
investment set aside for surprises that inevitably appear
once walls and floors are opened up, and we work closely
with our contractor partners to quickly solve infrastructure
problems as they are uncovered. By being both flexible
and experienced, we can often design around unknown
conditions in ways that make the final design even more
spectacular.
64
bostondesignguide.com
Design Spaces for Functionality and Beauty.
One thing that sets us apart is that we understand how projects
are engineered, as well as how to make them beautiful.
We don’t just design a pretty space a contractor then has to
figure out how to build. Instead, we work closely with expert
craftsmen, and we create designs that integrate engineering
and construction details from the start. The end result is
that the design you approve is something we know can be
built, and that we also know will stand the test of time.
Manage a Realistic Timeline and Build in Buffers.
Good things take time and we never rush a project. One
of the downsides of TV home shows is that they give a
false impression that things happen quickly during a home
renovation – how many entirely new kitchens are completed
in mere weeks rather than months? We take the time to
let designs percolate and take shape. We find this results
in a stronger end product, and one the client is confident
will achieve their goals. This also gives us plenty of time
to customize smaller details and components and find the
“just right” features that personalize each design and make
it come alive.
Recognize the Value of Industry Knowledge and Expertise.
There is a big difference between a decorator and a
designer, and we place a high value on continuous learning
to ensure our clients receive the absolute best. This is why
I along with another team member earned the Certified
Master Kitchen and Bath Designer designation from the
National Kitchen and Bath Association. This expertise
ensures our designs conform to nationally-recognized
industry standards. In addition, we are active in regional
and national trade and business organizations that help
us stay abreast of new products and techniques as well as
developing style trends. We also serve as a resource for
other designers. Earlier this year, for example, we delivered
an educational presentation on kitchen design during the
Voices of the Industry portion of the national Kitchen & Bath
Industry Show in Las Vegas, and we’ll be offering this again
locally during Boston Design Week.
Remember that Working with a Designer is a Two-Way Street.
Working with a designer is not for everyone, and no
designer works well with all clients. It’s important to
consider why you want to hire a designer and what your
goals are. Good designers can help you envision your
home differently and consider things you may never have
thought of before. Home renovation projects should be
fun, and if you don’t feel energized working with your
designer, it may be time to find someone new. One of our
clients shared that she hired us because she
couldn’t imagine spending months with the
other firm she interviewed. Ultimately, both
parties need to value the relationship
and trust and respect one another.
When the property came up for sale, Aaron Polhemus,
Owner and CEO of integrated architecture and construction
potential.
“We felt that the site was really underutilized with the structure
On the dune-facing rear side, where the home is
intentionally elevated above the flood zone, the home
edges toward contemporary, with panoramic ocean views
that unfold beyond expansive windows and oversized
sliding glass panels. The interior selections, courtesy of
Carolyn Thayer Interiors, further enhance the home’s sense
of place, with hues of sand and sea.
“All of the colors were selected to work in concert with the
surroundings,” says Thayer. Anchored by light-toned oak
flooring reminiscent of sun-kissed sands, Thayer’s design
features a neutral color palette with natural fibers, and
carefully curated furnishings that speak to a beachside
retreat. Balancing contemporary aesthetics with timeless
comfort, the interior selections were one of the many
draws for the new homeowners, who kept all of Thayer’s
selections as is.
Echoing the quiet simplicity of the interiors, the landscape
design takes a minimalist approach, where the use of
native plantings pay homage to the site’s natural wonders.
“The house appears to be in the dune itself,” says Rob
Calderaro, Senior Landscape Architect at PSD. “Just seeing
what was already there, it’s hard to ignore.”
A gem nestled by the dunes, the home epitomizes a
quintessential Cape Cod getaway, where pristine natural
beauty is highlighted by intentional simplicity. “The view
is the star of the show, and everything was designed to
enhance it,” Thayer affirms. Mindfully positioned and
curated for coastal living, the home resonates with its
surroundings like it has always been there.
