MANAGER’S NOTES 

— AT THIS LEVEL of professional 

football – the best league in the world 

– there’s numerous challenges that 

go unnoticed, not least at a club in our 

hazardous position. 

Morale, collectively and individually, 

taking in numerous factors, is amongst 

those challenges, both on and off the pitch. 

After that Arsenal encounter at 

Bramall Lane, everyone has had to 

drag themselves from the canvass. The 

mood was not great, but we’ve licked 

our wounds and gone again and there 

are signs of optimism. On the pitch, our 

consistency has improved, in my opinion. 

We’ve probably deserved a bit more than 

we’ve got – in terms of points – since that 

Monday evening, we are where we are, 

and we keep going. 

We’ve had some good performances, our 

figures have been good, and we’ve been in 

every game since then and pushed some 

good teams to the later stages, without 

getting our full rewards. 

This is something we’ve worked on at 

Shirecliffe and I purposely talked about 

morale on and off the field because I’m all 

too aware that performances and results 

are felt as strongly in the stands. The last 

two here – Fulham and Chelsea – are the 

ones I feel we deserved more than two 

points, despite the mitigating factors, and 

will hopefully give us confidence going 

forwards. Everyone of a Sheffield United 

persuasion knows that this will be a tough 

game but if we back each other then 

it goes a long way. Plenty of times I’ve 

spoken about the Bramall Lane factor – it is 

important to me. 

Staying on the theme of punters, 

the away following at Brentford was 

magnificent. I appreciate it was a new 

ground to be ticked off, but the support 

was appreciated, and it was disappointing 

that we didn’t come away with anything, but 

that’s the level of the Premier League. 

Fine margins. If you look at the first goal, 

which is the important one, we have a 5 v 

3 situation in their box, we take the wrong 

option and all of a sudden the ball is in the 

back of our net from a deflection. In about 

30 seconds it goes from us being on the 

front foot, and I thought we were at the 

start of the second half, to us being behind 

and chasing the game. 

Generally, it was a competitive standard 

and I’m fine with that. We worked very hard 

in terms of how we played, there were 

no passengers, it was just the quality we 

needed to find which decides games. It 

was a bit of luck which went against us, but 

I always felt we were in the game and had 

an opportunity. 

Another disappointment is that it seems 

that we are losing a body a game to injury 

at the moment, not through soft tissue or 

anything we can control, it is tough and 

we wish Jack Robinson and Jayden Bogle 

speedy recoveries. 

Finally, I’d like to offer a warm welcome 

to Vincent Kompany and all associated 

with Burnley to Bramall Lane. There’s been 

some interesting fixtures between the two 

clubs in recent years and I’m sure today will 

live up to expectation.

Everyone staying positive – Ivo 

— STOPPER Ivo Grbić is 

taking a positive mindset 

into the final six games of 

the season and is refusing 

to give up in the fight for 

Premier League survival. 

The Croatian international 

joined the Blades in January 

from Atletico Madrid and 

has become Chris Wilder’s 

number one, despite a 

concussion injury at Crystal 

Palace disrupting his early 

appearances. 

Ivo says he’s very much 

settled in the Steel City and 

is enjoying the challenge 

of the Premier League, 

taking a positive approach 

as United prepare for a 

crucial showdown against 

Ivo shows his appreciation to the fans 

after the recent game against Chelsea 

Burnley at Bramall Lane this 

afternoon. 

He said: “Everyone in the 

team, and the coach, we 

are competitive people. In 

training and in everything 

we do, it is about trying 

to win – we are always 

positive. I know we aren’t 

in a good position in the 

table but we all still believe, 

and we will stay positive, 

and we’ll all give everything 

to get wins in the Premier 

League. I prefer to look this 

way because if you don’t it 

becomes difficult. 

“I’m enjoying Sheffield. It 

is very different to living in 

Croatia or Spain, and it is 

quite difficult to come over 

and just switch everything 

in a few days. But stepby-step 

I have adapted, 

and I am really settled 

now. England is a beautiful 

country and Sheffield, 

I hadn’t really heard about 

it much before I came here, 

but it’s great, it’s a big city 

and everything I need is 

right here. My girlfriend is 

happy here too and if we 

can start winning games 

then that would make 

everything come together.” 

Competing in the 

Premier League has always 

been a big ambition of 

Ivo’s, who has experienced 

playing in his homeland, 

France and Spain in his 

career to date. 

Now here, it isn’t a 

position he wants to give 

up lightly as the fight for 

survival continues with a 

game against the Clarets, 

followed by a midweek trip 

to Old Trafford. 

He explained: “To be 

honest, when I was 12 or 13 

my heroes were Petr Cech 

and Edwin van der Sar. It 

was my dream to come and 

play in the Premier League. 

It is the best league in the 

world to come and try and 

compete in, it has the best 

players and the best teams. 

I am happy to be here 

and just want to help the 

team.”

Cameron glad to be back 

— STRIKER Cameron 

Archer is thrilled to be back 

in contention again as he 

aims for a big finish to the 

campaign. 

The former England 

U21 star has endured a 

frustrating period on the 

sidelines after picking up 

a calf issue in United’s 3-1 

win at Luton Town back in 

February. 

Cameron starred for the 

Blades at Kenilworth Road 

with a positive display 

which was capped by a 

well-taken goal, but any 

momentum picked up from 

the performance was lost 

after he was subsequently 

ruled out for six weeks. 

He made his return at 

the start of this month after 

coming off the bench to 

great acclaim in the 2-2 

draw against Chelsea 

when he flicked on for Oli 

McBurnie to fire in to claim 

a last gasp point. 

Now Cameron is targeting 

a big end to the campaign 

as he looks to make an 

impact in the remaining 

six games. 

He said: “It feels good to 

be back. It was a long six or 

seven weeks and I’m just 

happy to be back now. I felt 

my calf in the Luton game 

which was the game I’d just 

scored in as well, so 

I was frustrated 

when I got 

the news. 

“I just want to 

score goals. It 

is something 

I am looking 

to achieve 

every game 

and even 

in training. 

I said to Oli 

after the game that he’d 

finally got on the end of 

one of mine! I was happy 

with the assist in the end 

and obviously in the game 

something just told me to 

just try and flick it on which

late, Cameron explained 

that there is still a real 

togetherness behind the 

scenes, with everyone 

encouraging each other 

in their respective battles 

for fitness in order to play 

a part before the end of 

the season. 

He added: “We all just 

stick together in there and 

encourage each other and 

try and get out as quick as 

we can. There are some 

experienced lads who 

have been here quite a few 

years, and they’ve really 

helped me and others to 

get back.”

Ben hails support 

from the terraces 

— THE LEVEL of support 

from the Blades fans is 

something that has not 

gone unnoticed by Ben 

Osborn and his United 

teammates. 

The supporters gave 

United a standing ovation 

for their efforts most 

recently on home soil 

against Fulham and 

Chelsea, whilst the away 

end was in great voice 

as the Blades were 

unfortunate not to come 

away with something in last 

weekend’s defeat against 

Brentford. 

Speaking after the 

game at the Gtech 

Community Stadium, Ben 

acknowledged the backing, 

especially in recent weeks, 

stating it is a big incentive to 

try and give the supporters 

something big to cheer in 

the coming weeks. 

He explained: “The fans 

are still with us; they were 

amazing today. They’ve 

been class at home over 

the last few games and we 

have just got to keep going 

for them and for ourselves 

in the next few games. 

“Everyone is working as 

hard as they can, putting 

everything in. The quality 

hasn’t been there at times, 

we need to be better on 

the ball, but the fans stayed 

at the end and clapped us 

after a long journey and 

spending a lot of money, it 

does mean a lot. The lads 

are grateful for them. 

“It felt like it was going 

to be a 0-0 game to be 

honest. I thought if anyone 

was going to nick it then 

it would be us. We were 

confident coming into the 

game, and I thought off 

the back of the last few 

performances we had a 

good chance of getting a 

win. They made it difficult; 

we cancelled each 

other out to 

be fair.” 

Ben has

in midfield 

and at 

wing-back 

to great 

effect. 

After coming back 

from injury, the ex- 

Nottingham Forest ace 

has been one of 

United’s most 

consistent

He added: “The aim has 

been to try and get back 

into the team. I have had 

my injury issues, but I feel 

good at the moment. I have 

enjoyed playing next to 

‘Blaster’, he’s a good little 

player and it has been 

good talking him 

through the 

games.”

— BEN BRERETON DIAZ is 

looking for a strong finish 

to his loan spell with the 

Blades and has revealed he 

has loved his time at Bramall 

Lane, despite United’s 

relegation fears. 

The forward who 

celebrated his 25th birthday 

earlier this week has 

contributed heavily when 

available having swapped 

Spain for Shirecliffe and 

looking back on his winter 

move back to England he 

says in a footballing sense it 

was a ‘no-brainer’. 

Ben has nothing but 

praise for Chris Wilder and 

his staff, whilst Oli McBurnie 

and Oliver Arblaster are 

two individuals that have 

impressed him during his 

time at S2, with the Villarreal 

loanee also having some 

kind words for the Unitedites 

that have remained behind 

the team throughout the 

current campaign. 

The Chilean international 

has endured defeats on 

recent trips to the Lane 

during his time in the EFL 

with Blackburn Rovers, but 

the Stoke-born star ranks 

United’s historic home as the 

toughest place to get a result 

outside the top-flight.

UTB: Four goals and an assist 

from your eight league starts is 

an excellent return, how do you 

reflect on your time at Bramall 

Lane so far? 

BBD: “I’m definitely happy with 

my contribution in the games I’ve 

played, but in recent weeks there 

has been a real focus on being 

more consistent and competitive 

as a team and on the whole we’ve 

done that. We haven’t had the rub 

of the green at crucial times or 

got the points return we wanted 

and needed but we’ve definitely 

been stronger, and I think that 

has been noticeable on and off 

the pitch. As a forward, you are 

always happy with scoring goals 

or creating them, but my favourite 

was the strike early on at Palace, 

it was an excellent team move in 

what was a good atmosphere at 

Selhurst Park. The double against 

Fulham were both pleasing 

because I’ve enjoyed combining 

as a two with Oli Mc.” 

UTB: You touched on it briefly 

there, is that partnership 

with Oli McBurnie 

something that has just 

clicked on the pitch? 

BBD: “It has 

developed quickly 

for sure because 

we’ve not had loads 

of time together on 

the training ground. 

I’ve only been here for 

a short period of time 

and overcome a niggle, 

whilst Oli has kept 

putting his hand up for 

selection on a matchday 

despite having a few 

issues of his own. We 

just seem to complement each 

other nicely, we both like to do 

different things to cause problems 

for defenders, but we also have 

similar strengths too and link up 

really well. I’ve known about Oli 

for a long time, I’ve played against 

him a lot in the EFL, and we know 

what each other is about on the 

pitch. I came here with a good 

knowledge of the team, but Oli Mc 

is a real handful, so it was easy to 

find a connection with him. We’ve 

both got plenty of experience, 

we’ve both played a lot of games 

and been around at a good level 

throughout our careers, whilst 

playing internationally. I’ve relished 

the chance to play down the 

middle alongside someone like 

Oli.” 

UTB: Having opted to make 

the move to Spain last summer, 

what was it about Sheffield 

United that enticed you back in 

January? 

BBD: “At the end of last season 

my contract was up at Blackburn, 

and I wanted and needed, a fresh 

challenge. I wanted to go and 

test myself abroad and Villarreal 

were keen. It is amazing over 

there as a place and I’ve loved 

that, but like I said when I first 

came here, I want to play games 

and I wasn’t featuring much at 

the time in Spain. I knew what 

this club was about and for me it 

was a no brainer to come to this 

great club and to play for Sheffield 

United, it is a club that has suited 

me, and I’ve loved every minute. 

The manager talked on how he 

wanted me to come in and have 

an impact and I thank him for 

putting his faith in me, but I knew

I needed to come in and hit the 

ground running straightaway. The 

gaffer and his staff have been 

great with me, I’d worked well 

with Jack (Lester) at Forest for a 

number of years and he taught 

me a lot about the game in my 

early years, so knowing someone 

like him helped me settle quickly 

too.” 

UTB: Do you feel this loan spell 

has benefited all parties? 

BBD: “It was a tricky one in the 

summer because I had a big 

decision to make, but having 

spoken to family, friends and the 

people closest to me, I felt the 

time was right to make the move 

to Spain and the interest had 

been strong for a while. I wanted 

to go out there and really test 

myself, but unfortunately, I didn’t 

play as much as I’d have hoped, 

but when I return, I can hopefully 

have a better crack at it. I came 

here to prove a point I suppose, 

I wanted to come here play games 

and try and help the boys get 

out of trouble. Football in Spain 

is different, and you need time to 

adjust, there is a lot I like though, 

but the main thing will always be 

football, my move there also had 

my international career at the 

heart of it, so that was another 

factor.” 

UTB: Let’s talk Bramall Lane 

and the differences of being a 

home player as opposed to a 

visitor – you must be pleased to 

be in the red and white now? 

BBD: “I’ve played here a few 

times, and it always has a feeling 

of here we go as a visiting player, 

it was always a big game in the 

Championship and that FA Cup 

quarter-final sticks in my mind 

from last season. It was a great 

game to be fair, I scored a goal 

and gave it some to the home 

fans, so in return I deservedly got 

a fair amount of stick. Hopefully 

they’ve forgiven me since, but that 

kind of game does that to you as 

a player and also as a fan I guess, 

with the winner going through 

to the semi-finals at Wembley. 

It was end-to-end and what a 

goal it was from Tommy Doyle 

to win it for United. In the second 

tier, Bramall Lane is always the 

most difficult place to come 

to and get a result, the 

atmosphere and passion 

from the supporters 

is fantastic and they 

stick behind the lads 

because they are 

desperate to see 

them succeed. The 

atmosphere in the 

tunnel gets you

going, I’ve enjoyed my time here, 

it is loud and hostile, it is a historic 

stadium and one of the toughest 

I’ve played at as an away player.” 

UTB: There have been some 

high scoring draws of late, two 

of which could have easily ended 

in wins, how do you reflect on 

those near misses? 

BBD: “Since I’ve been here, the 

lads have put everything into 

every training session and every 

game, and I believe the fans 

have recognised that because 

they’ve been brilliant. We can’t 

worry too much about the future, 

the focus has to be on the next 

game, the next opportunity and 

trying to give the fans something 

to enjoy and get excited about. 

We are trying to put markers 

down both individually and 

collectively to prove we deserve 

the chance to stay in this division. 

We have had some bad results 

at home against the likes of Villa, 

Brighton and Arsenal, but recently 

we’ve bounced back well and 

being competitive against both 

Fulham and Chelsea, we were 

disappointed not to win those 

games which shows we’ve made 

progress despite not getting 

the points we need. We’ve 

scored goals which have been 

big positives, young ‘Blaster’ 

has been unreal, going from not 

playing senior football to playing 

four or five games on the bounce 

in the Premier League which is 

some effort from him, and he 

doesn’t look out of place.” 

UTB: Finally, you recently 

tackled Mbappe and co in 

Paris, having beaten Albania in 

a friendly, how much do enjoy 

your time away with the Chilean 

national team? 

BBD: “It is always nice to go 

away with Chile because on the 

pitch in South America it is off 

the scale. Off the pitch is about 

training, the games, resting and 

travelling, but the atmosphere at 

the games and the passion from 

the fans is unreal and a great 

experience, I love it. I’ve learnt so 

much from playing and training 

with some excellent players and it 

has certainly developed my game 

and evolved my outlook, some of 

the games in the Copa America 

and World Cup qualifiers are 

massive occasions and it is mindblowing.”

as such, but for

the result, but I’d 

usually just head 

home to relax with 

the missus and little 

one, maybe a meal 

out if the family are 

up.”

pass the time on 

away games? 

BBD: “There is 

always a game of 

cards on the go or 

something on the 

television, but I’m 

usually just happy 

with a bit of peace 

and quiet.” 

UTB: Sharing

I just enjoy my own 

space and a good 

night’s sleep.”

Cup defeat firmly to bed after an emphatic 

5-0 win over Watford in the Professional 

Development League. 

After a 2-2 draw against Burnley, the 

Blades dominated large parts of the 

Premier League Cup quarter-final tie 

against Forest, but costly mistakes allowed 

the visitors to sneak through to the last 

four. 

Will Osula scored twice in the defeat and 

maintained his impressive run with a hattrick 

inside the opening half-hour against 

Watford as the Blades put the Hornets to 

the sword. 

United didn’t let up with Osula hitting 

the woodwork before more goals followed 

after the break. Andre Brooks played in 

Sydie Peck for a smart low finish and the 

fifth arrived soon after when Louie Marsh 

finished off a fine team move.

— IT HAS BEEN a mixed bag of results 

over recent weeks for United’s U18s with 

the standout performance coming against 

Peterborough. 

After being defeated 4-2 by 

Bournemouth, Matt Thorpe’s side bounced 

back with a convincing win on the road 

against Posh. 

United opened the scoring when Ethan 

Cummings picked out Lamine Sidibe who 

slotted in with a first-time finish. Cummings 

was provider again, teeing up Marshall 

Francis to make it 2-0. 

Five minutes into the second half it was 

three when Theo Howard nicked the ball 

off a defender before converting. 

Dylan Tawodzera got forward and saw 

a whipped cross catch the wind and go all 

the way to make it 4-0. 

United couldn’t back it up though and 

were then beaten 3-0 at Charlton.

— UNITED WOMEN made it four wins on 

the spin following an impressive showing in 

a 2-1 victory over London City Lionesses. 

The Blades made the perfect start to the 

game inside 10 minutes when a loose ball 

found captain Sophie Barker in the box, 

and the midfielder prodded home via a 

heavy deflection. 

Izzy Goodwin saw an effort saved and 

Barker had another effort blocked as the 

Blades piled on the pressure. 

It was soon 2-0 when Bex Rayner 

released Ash Hodson down the left and 

after her effort was saved, Goodwin 

converted a 15th goal of the campaign. 

There were further chances with Sophie 

Haywood firing wide and both Tara Bourne 

and Rachel Brown heading over. 

In the second 45 the deficit was halved 

when Lotta Lindstrom’s strike set up a 

nervy final 20 minutes, but the Blades saw 

the game through for another impressive 

three points.

FOR CSALS 

— VALUABLE SUPPORT FOR one of United's 

partner charities, CSALS, has been received 

from Motan Colortronic UK Ltd, based in 

Chesterfield. 

CSALS (Community Save a Life Scheme) 

provide free online and practical first aid 

training. Over 12,000 people have completed 

the online course, offered in association with 

Virtual College. 

Karl Miller, the company's managing director, 

is a lifelong supporter of the Blades and 

played for the Junior Blades as a youngster, 

so it was fitting that he joined club legend 

Tony Currie for a photo to mark the ongoing 

sponsorship. 

Commenting on the link-up, Karl said: "We 

recognise the great work being done by 

CSALS to ensure there are more people 

armed with vital first aid skills. Lives have been 

saved as a result of people doing the training 

provided by CSALS and we are pleased to 

support their efforts."

RAINBOW CARE 

— OUR FRIENDS AT Rainbow Sheffield 

held their first sports reminiscence activity 

event this past Monday at the Blades 

Family Hub. The new group is aimed at ex-professional 

sports players and fans and provides assistance for a 

wide range of physical and cognitive abilities. 

Beth Wragg, the 

Foundation’s health 

and wellbeing 

manager, said: “It’s an 

innovative day care 

club where we’ll have 

a day of sports related 

activities including 

quizzes and table 

games, reminiscence 

activities and active 

games completely tailored 

to individual ability. The 

service will deliver a fun 

and fulfilling day for all 

who attend in a safe and 

nurturing environment, with 

full care support for those 

who need it.” 

The group meets every Monday at the Blades Family

TALK CLUB 

— TALK CLUB is a charity 

helping men to improve 

their mental health. The 

group offers free support 

for men who wish to share 

experiences and talk about 

their feelings in a safe, 

confidential and nonjudgemental 

space. 

The talking group actively 

helps men to understand 

how they’re feeling by 

asking “How are you? Out 

of 10?” then explaining why.

On average, a TC talk 

and listen group raises a 

man’s mental fitness by 

over 15%. It’s why local 

pubs to global corporates, 

and 18 to 80+ year olds 

across the world, are now

Club said: “It’s a place 

where men can come, not 

to bottle up, but to open 

up about their emotions 

and basically crack this 

myth that vulnerability is 

a weakness. Talk Club is 

not just for people feeling 

depressed or anxious, it’s 

for anybody who wants 

to keep a healthy mind 

by talking about the real 

issues that really matter to 

men.”

NATURE BASED 

BLADES 

— IT WAS OUR PLEASURE to be featured on Match 

of the Day to showcase our brand-new sustainability 

programme Nature Based Blades. 

The programme is being delivered in partnership 

with IT reseller XMA in secondary schools across 

Sheffield and will see £150,000 invested into educating 

young people on the importance of environmental 

sustainability and climate action in their community. 

Blades midfielder Tom Davies joined us at Bradfield 

School and helped students plant 150 trees on the 

school’s grounds. Tom said: “It feels quite natural to 

get involved with stuff like this. It’s what I care about, 

and I want to help where I can. It feels great to just 

be connected to other people that care about the 

environment.”

— THE GAMES ARE RUNNING 

OUT for the teams at the bottom of 

the Premier League, with the value 

of a victory offering even more 

significance in the final month of 

the season. 

Burnley have lost just one of 

their last six league matches, a 

sign of some renewed consistency 

which has kept Vincent Kompany’s 

side within the fight to stay in the 

Premier League. While results 

have improved, Burnley know 

they still need to make up ground 

in the battle to beat the drop as 

they arrive at Bramall Lane this 

afternoon. 

A win over Brentford and draws 

against West Ham, Chelsea, Wolves 

and most recently Brighton have 

kept the points tally ticking over as 

the Clarets keep fighting to close 

the gap to the safety line, with 

enough points still on offer to fuel 

a grandstand finish to the Premier 

League season.

— IN HIS FIRST managerial 

post in English football, 

Vincent Kompany can 

certainly say he has brought 

some headlines to Burnley 

as he closes in on two years 

at the helm. 

The Clarets secured 

promotion back to the 

Premier League on April 

9th last year, after a stellar 

season that saw them 

clinch the Championship 

title with an impressive 

brand of attacking football. 

The success ensured 

Kompany could begin 

his preparations for life 

in the top flight, yet the 

examination presented 

this season has been very 

different. 

Kompany didn’t try to 

hide the scale of the task 

his team would face as they 

prepared to mix it with the 

biggest teams in England, 

but as the season moves 

into the final few weeks, 

Burnley are still in with a 

shout of achieving survival 

after staying in touch with 

the sides above following 

some impressive recent 

results. 

It’s recent results which 

has kept this former 

defender, who won four 

Premier League titles as 

an inspirational leader at 

Manchester City, upbeat as 

his team aim to finish this 

season on a high. 

“The gap between the 

Championship and the 

Premier League is getting 

bigger,” believes Kompany. 

“Having played in the 

Premier League as well, the 

thing that’s very clear to 

me is that the top teams in 

the Premier League have 

always been tough. But the 

level of the teams, let’s say 

the bottom 10 teams, has 

increased massively.” 

Kompany is heading 

into the final weeks of this 

season with optimism, as 

he insists his side has a 

chance to scramble to 

safety if they can turn draws 

into victories. 

“I wouldn’t 

say a miracle 

is needed, 

but it needs 

wins. 

It needs points,” he states. 

“We’re not necessarily 

able to look forward to any 

game and pick and choose 

this game as the one. 

“Every game is tough for 

us, but every game offers 

the opportunity. We also 

can’t look at any game and 

think we can’t win. 

“What we need is 

when you have a good 

performance, you need 

three points. That’s the 

difference. 

“I have a really good 

group to work with. I 

wouldn’t change anything. 

These guys give me 

everything, so I give them 

everything. 

“I’m confident our team is 

a team of improvement, we 

can get better and I want 

them to continue doing that. 

“It’s not surprising at all 

that we are where we are 

but, OK, that’s in the past. 

It’s what the next game 

brings. Start the game with 

confidence we can do 

something. I don’t conceive 

a moment this season 

where we won’t keep 

fighting.”

— BURNLEY BOASTS a long list of legends from their title win 

of the 1920s and their 1959/60 First Division winning season, 

but Ben Mee was a talisman and leader for the modern 

generation of Clarets fans. 

This defender played 376 games for the club over an 

11-season career, with seven of those played out in 

the Premier League. His time at the club ended in the 

summer of 2022 when he signed for Brentford.

— FOUNDER MEMBERS of the Football 

League, Burnley Football Club began life 

as a rugby club. However, ‘Burnley Rovers’ 

soon switched codes and became Burnley 

Football Club in 1882. They moved to their 

Turf Moor home shortly afterwards, at the 

invitation of the town’s cricket club, which is 

still uniquely situated next to the stadium. 

FA Cup campaigns gave way to 

organised football in 1888 with the 

foundation of the Football League and 

since then, Burnley have claimed every 

major honour, with the exception of the 

League Cup. Their first piece of silverware 

was a Second Division title in 1897/98 and 

the club’s improved fortunes were finally 

reflected in an FA Cup victory in 1914, with a 

1-0 win against Liverpool in a final staged at 

Crystal Palace coming just months before 

the outbreak of the Great War. 

Following the conflict, the Clarets 

continued to make their mark on the 

domestic game and in the 1920/21 season 

the team enjoyed a remarkable unbeaten 

run of 30 league matches as they led the 

club to an inaugural First Division title.

...Bethany Pashley 

Mike Firth, editor at Heron Publications, is this season introducing us to some 

Bramall Lane characters, sharing their experiences and matchday routines. This time 

around it’s Bethany Pashley...

— IT’S NOT BEEN the best 

of seasons for most Blades 

followers but 2024 has been an 

unforgettable year for talented 

singer Bethany Pashley. 

The 21-year-old - who performs 

under the name of Bethany 

Grace - has had her music played 

at Bramall Lane three times and 

says hearing her own voice over 

the loudspeakers has been her 

biggest achievement to date. 

“The first time, when we played 

Brighton in the FA Cup in January, 

it was just mental - absolutely 

crazy! The song that was played 

was called ‘Too Far Gone’ and 

my mum and dad both filmed my 

reaction to it. The film went viral!” 

Bethany comes from a family 

of Unitedites; her grandad Dave 

Strafford, now 79, has been 

watching the Blades since he was 

nine or ten and her mum, Tracy, is 

also a life-long supporter. Aunty 

Alison is another fan, although 

living in Australia she doesn’t 

make it to too many games these 

days. 

Bethany’s younger brother, 

Sam, seemed set to be the one 

to carry on the family tradition but 

when one week he couldn’t get to 

a game, Bethany took his place... 

and has been hooked ever since.

Now the whole family of season 

ticket holders sit together in 

Block A of the Tony Currie Stand. 

However, Sam will be absent 

from most games in the near 

future as he is taking up a football 

scholarship in America. 

The family’s matchday routine 

usually involves parking the 

car just off Queen’s Road, then 

enjoying a pre-game drink with 

fellow Blades in the Lykke Bar. 

Tradition decrees that a match 

programme is always bought from 

the seller who stands outside The 

Railway pub. 

When fans join together to sing 

the Greasy Chip Butty anthem, 

Bethany’s voice stands out... she 

sings in tune! 

As for favourite players, Bethany 

names three: “I have always had 

a soft spot for Bash and it broke 

my heart when he suffered his 

injury at Fulham. Ollie Arblaster is 

already shining and he is going to 

be an incredible player. I also enjoy 

watching Gus Hamer who puts in 

so much effort.” 

After having her music played 

at the Lane, Bethany is now 

looking forward to performing live 

at Hillsborough... but in the park, 

thankfully, not the football ground. 

“I’ve been chosen to perform at 

the Tramlines Festival on Friday, 

26th July, and I just can’t wait to go 

on stage there. It will be another 

highlight of my career.”

LEAGUE GROUNDS AGAIN 

— FOLLOWING LAST WEEK’S visit to 

Brentford’s new ground, United have now 

played league games on 162 of the 237 

league grounds used since 1888. Below 

are some more facts about those grounds. 

PERHAPS ONE DAY 

There are eight grounds which have staged 

league games in the past and are still being 

used by non-league clubs but where we 

have never played a competitive game. 

Can you name them? 

THREE GROUNDS 

We have played the following clubs in away 

league games on three different grounds, 

although the first ground was used a long 

time ago: Arsenal, Bolton, Derby, Hull, 

Manchester City, Manchester United, 

Middlesbrough, Port Vale, Sunderland and 

Walsall. 

There are four other clubs we played on 

three grounds in more recent times (you 

may have seen United play on all three). 

They are? 

Trafford in May 1921 because Edgeley Park 

was closed due to crowd disturbances. 

28 grounds (including Wembley) have 

been used temporarily by another 

club. Five have been used by two other 

clubs: Forest’s City Ground, Elland Road, 

Huddersfield’s Leeds Road, Priestfield and 

The Hawthorns. Which ground has been 

used by three other clubs? 

ANFIELD 

Anfield is unusual. It was Everton’s ground 

from 1884-92, the last four seasons as a 

league ground. Following a dispute with the 

ground’s owners, Everton left and Liverpool 

was formed with Anfield their home ground 

ever since. 

ANSWERS: 

One day: Barnet, Chester, Dorchester Town 

(Bournemouth played eight games there whilst their 

ground was being re-developed), Dagenham & 

Redbridge, Kidderminster Harriers, Merthyr Town (Tydfil 

when a league club), Southport, Stalybridge Celtic. 

Three grounds: Brighton, Bristol Rovers, Coventry, 

Wimbledon. 

Three clubs: Selhurst Park: Charlton, Millwall, Wimbledon. 

MORE THAN ONE CLUB 

For various reasons some grounds have 

been used as ‘home’ grounds for more than 

their usual club. For example, Manchester 

United played at Maine Road for three 

seasons (1946-49) because of wartime 

damage to Old Trafford and Stockport 

County played Leicester City at Old 

Sunderland’s Roker Park, one 

of three grounds the Blades 

have played the Black Cats on
