WOUNDS
LICKED AND
IT’S TIME TO
GO AGAIN…
4 | The Wanderer

The Wanderer | 5
We desperately wanted to have our destiny in
our own hands going into the final two games
of the season but unfortunately this week has
not gone as planned.
Draws against Portsmouth and Shrewsbury
– in contrasting fashions – means automatic
promotion looks unlikely.
You never know and, if Derby were to lose today,
we simply have to make sure there is still a chance
going into the final weekend by beating Port Vale
this afternoon.
But we also have to be realistic and admit that the
play-offs may now be the more realistic route of
pursuing our hopes of going up.
And if that is the case, the key is to make sure
we’re ready by winning matches to go forward
with momentum and confidence.
I firmly believe we are capable of winning five
games in a row and, if we do that, we know we
can still gain promotion.
That was our aim at the start of the season and,
if we have to do it the long way, then we will
continue to give it everything to make it happen.
It was natural – and right – for everyone to feel
disappointed that we let a chance slip against
Shrewsbury when we again conceded poor goals
at bad times and then didn’t take our big chances
when it mattered to repair the damage.
But that feeling now has to be forgotten and
replaced with positive thoughts and energy.
I believe we are still playing well but have to
sharpen up in both boxes, starting against
opposition today who know they also have to try
and win for their own reasons at the other end of
the table and I welcome Darren Moore, his staff,
players and all the Port Vale fans.
It’s equally important over the next phase that
we get as many of our players as possible fully
fit and firing. That hasn’t been the case in recent
months but having taken the tough decision, in
conjunction with the medical staff, to leave out
some big players against Shrewsbury on Tuesday
night, hopefully we will feel the benefit for the
important challenges still to come.
We also need to get game-time into our returning
players and get them fully back up to speed after
time out injured because we need to be at our best
for the remainder of a season that could still have
almost a month to run.
Everyone will be needed in some form or another
to make the most of the great opportunity we still
have.
We’re giving up on nothing and urge you, the
supporters, to feel the same. Your backing remains
as vital as ever in generating a vibrant atmosphere
that will bring the best out of the players.
Collectively we can still do this and make it a
memorable season – however long it takes.
Enjoy the game and thanks, as ever, for your
support.
Ian

Wanderers’ duo Josh Sheehan and Josh
Dacres-Cogley have been recognised for their
part in the Whites’ promotion push with places
in the EFL League One Team of the Season.
The pair earned their place in the select XI
– announced at the EFL Awards in London –
after outstanding performances for Wanderers
throughout the 2023/24 campaign.
Midfield maestro Sheehan has been credited with
12 assists so far in League One – the third highest
total in the division – in making Ian Evatt’s men
tick in their pursuit of a promotion place.
And with 42 starts, the ultra-consistent Dacres-
Cogley has made more league appearances than
anyone else in Evatt’s squad to earn his nomination
at right-back in the EFL line-up.
IS PROUDLY
SPONSORED BY:
A bit like the Whites as a whole, Dempsey has
been through a wide range of emotions since it
all began again last August.
At his best, the midfielder has produced some
stand-out performances as one of the team’s
driving forces and, at times in the autumn, its
captain.
Passing 100 appearances for the Whites and
becoming a dad for the first time have been proud
moments along the way.
But the 28-year-old has also had to battle
debilitating injury problems that have
lessened his impact at times and provided a real
test for one of the fiercest competitors around.
“For me, it’s been a really difficult year,” Dempsey
revealed. “I don’t think many fans would have
realised at the time when I was playing, and my
standards sort of started dropping, that I played
probably for good part of two months with a
fractured back.
“Because of the numbers we were down to at the
time, and didn’t really have any midfield options,
I just thought if I can keep getting out there, I’d
do my best. I was only really training Thursdays
and Fridays to try and manage the pain and then
loading up on painkillers with injections just to stay
out there on the field.
“It got to a point where my levels of performance
had dropped that much that I had to try and
protect myself and that’s a learning curve for
me. Sometimes you think you are doing a job for
the team and helping the team but when I was
so hindered I couldn’t really turn or get up to
maximum speed.
“From last year, at the back end of the season, I
had such a good run of form and was playing really
good football and then started off this season really
well as well. But I’ve just been hindered, really.
It’s just been one of those seasons where I’ve had
injuries which I haven’t been able to help. It has
been frustrating for me and it’s been disappointing
but there is still work to do and so much to play for.”
Dempsey had been an ever-present in Ian Evatt’s
line-up through the first couple of months of the
season as he looked to pick up where he left off
last term, when his headed goal at Wembley to
kick-start the Whites’ EFL Trophy win was one of
the highlights.
But having finally given in to his back issue in early
October, Dempsey wouldn’t return to the fray until
a goal-scoring cameo in late November’s recordbreaking
win over Exeter City.
And even then, a hamstring injury he was having
to manage prevented him from being 100 per cent
fit and flying at all times until a recent injection to
help clear up the problem.
“I felt brand new again since then,” Dempsey said.
“My levels of performance in training have gone
up and now it’s about getting back to my peak
physical levels where if I’m required until the end of
this season I’m ready to play and give everything.
That will also be the focus for me before coming
back next year, getting a good pre-season into
my system and making sure my body is at its peak
level to hopefully have a massive year next year.”
After an impressive late showing from the bench
against Portsmouth a week ago, Dempsey earned
his first start in eight games for the Whites’ midweek
draw against Shrewsbury Town.
Naturally a little ring-rusty in the opening stages,
he grew back into his role and was one of
Wanderers’ most positive forces of a second-half
comeback that didn’t quite deliver the win the
Whites needed but did earn the point that hasn’t
fully ended automatic promotion hopes going into
today’s final home game against Port Vale.
“I’m trying to help the team in whatever way I can,”
Dempsey added. “I’ve been captain of my former
club at Gillingham and I’m just trying to bring that
experience and that sort of mindset to the group,
especially in these latter stages because this is a
crunch time.
“We had the disappointment of last year and we
don’t want that to happen again, so whenever
called upon I plan to be ready and firing. That’s all
I can do and whenever given the chance I’ve just
got to take it and help the team as much as I can.”
With Wanderers now needing a slip-up from
Derby to sneak back into the top two, a repeat of
last season’s play-off bid could be on the cards.
And this time, Evatt’s men will be determined
to advance beyond the semi-finals and make
the most of a possible Wembley route to the
Championship – if it comes to that.
“It’s been one of those this season where we’ve
had the opportunities but probably haven’t taken
12 | The Wanderer

The Wanderer | 13
them enough, which means we could fall just
short,” admitted Dempsey.
“But we’ve still got massive belief and you never
know what can happen in these two games. All
we can do is try and win our games, apply a bit of
pressure and see what happens.
“But whatever does happen, we want to be in good
form come the end of the season and I think we
are actually playing well. We just need to be a bit
more ruthless at both ends and clinical in front of
goal and then we will be in good stead come the
end of the season.
“You’ve always got to look to the play-offs and if
you do go in there you want to go in there feeling
confident. You don’t want to go in there on the
back of a couple of bad performances and that’s
all we’re focusing on at the minute, every day,
trying to better ourselves and trying to get up to
the standard we know we can set.”
Only a collective effort will get Wanderers over the
line one way or another but, inevitably, there also
personal landmarks collected along the way and
Dempsey’s latest milestone came at Stevenage on
Good Friday when he made his 100th Wanderers’
appearance.
“I didn’t realise it at the time, but to get that many
appearances under my belt in such a short space
of time is massive, especially at a club like this with
its size,” said Dempsey, who joined Wanderers from
Gillingham in January, 2022 before signing a new
deal to June, 2026 last summer. “It is something
I’m proud of. I’ve still got a long time left on my
contract and I want to make as many appearances
as I can.”
The Cumbrian-born former Carlisle United captain
is settled back in the north-west and added a
further piece to his life jigsaw with the birth of son,
Jett, last year.
“It’s been absolutely huge,” said Dempsey of
becoming a parent along with partner Olivia. “The
times when I have been struggling with the injuries,
struggling get to get back to peak fitness and my
head has sort of been gone a couple of times,
when I just wanted to play and help the team, to go
home and see the little man and my missus is the
best feeling in the world.
“I appreciate everything she does every day
to make my life easier. Her love and support
throughout everything is the reason I have a happy
life. Sometimes footie might not be going the
way you want it to, but when you’ve my family to
go home to it’s the best feeling in the world and
having a child is a thing you can’t really explain.
“Everyone who’s got kids knows that feeling and
for me, as well, it’s that extra drive, that extra
motivation to go out there and perform and do well
for him.
“That’s why I want to achieve promotion this year,
not only for my team-mates, the staff and the fans,
for my little man as well because it’s one of those
that when he grows older, I can tell him that he was
there watching and that’s the best feeling in the
world.”
Let’s hope he has a memory to treasure.

WAYS TO REDUCE
YOUR ENERGY BILLS
1. Seal drafts and insulate your home
Seal gaps and cracks around doors, windows, and other openings will prevent heat loss during the
winter and keep cool air inside during the summer and insulating your property will improve efficiency.
2. Adjust your thermostat settings
The University of Central London, for example, estimates that every degree you lower your
thermostat between 22°C and 18°C can save you £130 per year.
3. Upgrade your appliances
Consider upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, which are designed to use less
energy while performing the same tasks.
4. Unplug dormant electronics
Many electronics and appliances consume energy even
when they’re turned off but still plugged in
5. Switch your lighting
Replace traditional incandescent bulbs with
energy-efficient LED or CFL bulbs.
goalscoring list with 113 goals for the club between
1966 and 1976, ‘JB’ will celebrate his 80th birthday
this summer.
Arriving from Blackburn Rovers for £25,000 he went
on to become a Burnden favourite netting 20 League
goals in 1972/73 as Bolton won the Third Division
Championship. He scored hat tricks in the League,
League Cup and in the FA Cup for the club, which
included the first scored on a Sunday when Stoke
City were beaten 3-2 in a third round tie at Burnden in
January 1974.
His 100th League goal for the club came in February
1975 during a 3-2 Second Division win at Nottingham
Forest and he ended his Trotters career with 130 first
class goals in 351 games before finishing his career
with a short spell back at Blackburn who visited
OPPOSITION
PORT VALE
PORT VALE COME TO WANDERERS FIGHTING
FOR THEIR LIVES AND STILL HOPING TO
SOMEHOW END A TOUGH SEASON ON A HIGH.
Survival has become the name of the game
for the Valiants as they look to avoid a return
to League Two – two years on from winning
promotion from the bottom tier via the play-offs.
After a poor second half of the 2022/23 campaign
and finishing 18th in the League One table last
season, it’s been a similar tale this time around as
a bright start pre-empted another struggle and
the departure of Andy Crosby as manager in early
February after less than a year in overall charge.
Crosby had previously stepped up during Darrell
Clarke’s leave of absence and led Vale out for their
Wembley play-off final win before this season
guiding them to the quarter-finals of the Carabao
Cup and the knock-out rounds of the Bristol
Street Motors Trophy where they were beaten by
Wanderers.
But a dip in form following their cup exit to
Middlesbrough ended with Crosby’s sacking with
Vale one place above the drop zone after they had
been inside the top six when the Whites went there
to win at the end of September.
The change of management did not provide an
immediate catalyst for change, although the team’s
only wins of 2024 have come since Darren Moore
took over as boss.
One of those victories has been away from home,
with a vital three points coming at relegation rivals
Burton Albion towards the end of last month as Vale
went on to win back-to-back League One games for
the first time since September.
The Good Friday victory over Bristol Rovers hinted
at a revival but having dropped into the relegation
places just before Moore’s appointment, the
Potteries’ club has not yet been able to escape.
Their mid-week loss at home to Wycombe – their
fourth in five games – has made their quest even
more difficult, although defeat for Burton against
Cheltenham on the same night means all hope is
not lost.
However, Vale need to find at least three points from
somewhere and hope other results go in their favour.
And with just two games to go, defeat at Wanderers
today could be terminal for a club that was a regular
at Championship level for the best part of a decade
up to the Millenium and will be desperate to reverse
their present predicament come the end of the
current campaign.

THE BOSS
DARREN MOORE WAS
APPOINTED PORT VALE
MANAGER AMID SOME
FANFARE IN MID-
FEBRUARY.
Moore had previously
managed in the
Premier League
– going close to
performing a great
escape from relegation
as caretaker-boss
at West Bromwich
Albion in 2018 before
having close to a
season in charge in the
Championship with the
Baggies.
And with a promotion from League One with
Sheffield Wednesday still relatively fresh on his
CV, the 49-year-old signed a five-and-a-half-year
contract at Vale Park.
He took over a side short on form and confidence
following a run of just one win in nine games
following the end of their superb run to the last
eight of the Carabao Cup.
And so far, it’s been a battle to turn that around to
give himself the platform to re-build in the summer
and get Vale moving in the right direction again.
Following a superb playing career which brought
him over 650 appearances and promotions with
Bradford City, WBA and Derby County, the former
central defender started his managerial career at
West Brom.
A hugely popular figure at the Hawthorns, Moore
spent a year as ‘permanent’ manager before
returning to another former club for his second
crack at management with Doncaster Rovers.
The Birmingham-born boss then moved across
South Yorkshire to take charge at Hillsborough in
March, 2021.
After missing out in the League One play-offs
with Wednesday in his first full season in charge,
Moore then got the Owls over the line last season
in dramatic fashion with promotion finally sealed
via the play-offs following last-gasp wins over
Peterborough and Barnsley.
To the surprise of many, Moore then left
Wednesday within a month of their Wembley
win and was appointed by Championship rivals
Huddersfield Town last September.
It was not a happy or lengthy stay with the Terriers
but only a fortnight after being axed by Town at
the end of January, Moore was back in business
with Vale with the chance to restore his and the
Valiants’ fortunes when the opportunity comes to
re-build in the summer.
GONE BUT NOT
FORGOTTEN
CLUB HISTORIAN SIMON MARLAND
LOOKS BACK AT GROUNDS NO LONGER
IN EXISTENCE WHERE THE WANDERERS
HAVE PLAYED IN THE PAST.
THE DELL
(SOUTHAMPTON)
The Dell was home to Southampton from 1898
until 2001 and is now a housing estate with
apartment blocks bearing the names of former
Southampton players.
The Wanderers made 12 League visits to The Dell,
the first of which came in November 1933 when
the home side ran out 1-0 winners in a Second
Division fixture, the only goal coming from future
Arsenal and England striker Ted Drake.
In January 1935 Bolton secured their first win on
the ground on their way to getting promoted to
Division One with goals from Jack Milsom and Ray
Westwood. (pictured) Both players were to score
over 30 League goals that season.
New Years Day 1966 (programme pictured) saw
Wanderers go down to their heaviest defeat at The
Dell when The Saints ran out 5-1 winners,
having Syd Farrimond sent off ten minutes from
half time for striking an opponent didn’t help
matters and he as subsequently suspended by the
FA for 14 days. Francis Lee scored the Bolton goal.
During the 1970’s both clubs were vying for
promotion from the Second Division and four visits
at that level saw Bolton undefeated. A goal from
Hugh Curran settled the game in in February 1975
and in November 1976 a Steve Taylor double and a
goal from Neil Whatmore secured a 3-1 win.
Season 1977/78 saw both clubs win promotion
to the First Division, Bolton as Champions and
22 | The Wanderer

The Wanderer | 23
Southampton as runners-up with the game at
The Dell ending 2-2. The largest crowd for any
game between the clubs at the venue of 27,296
witnessed goals from Nick Holmes and Phil Boyer
for the home side and from Frank Worthington
(pictured during the game) and Willie Morgan for
Bolton.
Wanderers first away game back in the First
Division in August 1979 was at The Dell and once
again they came away with a point from a 2-2 draw
with Worthington, who was to be the top scorer in
the Division that term, netting a double. Boyer and
Ted MacDougall scored for Saints.
The last visit to the ground by Bolton came in the
Premier League on the opening day of the 1997/98
season when a goal two minutes from half time by
Nathan Blake made sure that the points came back
north.
In the FA Cup, Bolton made a visit to the
Hampshire County Cricket ground for a third round
replay in 1898 going down 4-0, but both ties at
The Dell have been exciting affairs. In January
1974 Southampton led a fourth round tie 3-1 in the
pouring rain on a mud bath of a pitch. A penalty
from Garry Jones (pictured converting) reduced
the arrears before John Byrom grabbed his second
of the afternoon to level matters and take the tie to
a replay that Saints won 2-0 after extra time.
In February 1992 a fifth round replay saw
Alan Shearer put the home side ahead before
Andy Walker equalised. Julian Darby (pictured
celebrating his goal) looked to have won the tie
for Bolton with a late strike until an injury time
thirty yarder from Barry Horne took the tie to extra
time. Horne settled the game with another long
range shot to end any hopes of a giant killing that
evening.
Since moving to St Mary’s Bolton have made five
League and cup visits and have been unbeaten.
The first was a scoreless Premier League draw in
February 2002 whilst during 2004 two League
visits both ended in 2-1 wins for Bolton. It was in
the League Cup in August 2010 that the sides last
faced each other at the venue when a goal from
Ivan Klasnic won the second round tie.

4] John Taylor
(19/01/45 to 08/12/23)
John, born in Little Hulton, was a lifelong Bolton
fan after being brought up on the excitement of
match days at Burnden Park with brother Harry
and father Tommy Taylor.
A good player himself, John played for Walkden
Town in his teens and although he married Linda,
a diehard Red, he never faltered in his devotion to
Wanderers. He could always name every player
on the team of the 1958 cup final and never tired
of recounting the goals.
Travelling extensively in Europe, Australia and
the United States, when asked by taxi drivers,
hotels and bar staff where he lived, John’s reply
of Worsley in Manchester always prompted
the same question … “Red or Blue?” He would
proudly declare Bolton Wanderers.
John is much missed by friends and family; a funloving,
kind, loyal and gentle man with a fabulous
sense of humour. As he always said: “you need a
good sense of humour when you’re a Bolton fan.”
Lucky enough to meet the legendary Nat
Lofthouse with friends, John is on the extreme
right of the photo, with the huge smile.
5] Happy 50th birthday Martin.
Hope you have a great day with all your family
and friends at the match today. Love from all the
family xxx
6] A big hello from everyone at Wanderers to the
Brother, you’re about to embark on an amazing
Congratulations and may you enjoy every
moment of married life to Rachael.
BWitC Host Future Lionesses
Talent Event
This week Bolton Wanderers in the Community
were selected to host a Future Lionesses Talent
Event, on behalf of the EFL Trust. Over 40 girls
from across the North West made the trip to
the Eddie Davies Academy for the afternoon to
take part in the event, consisting of five different
training drills.
Also in attendance were three England FA Talent
Reporters who were on site to scout players
with potential to enter into the England Lioness
pathway, who may one day go on to represent
their country.
Jemma Entwistle, FA Regional Talent Manager
said: “I feel the girls have really enjoyed the event.
There have been some really good and different
sessions going on.
“There have been opportunities to play with
different people, be challenged against different
age groups and obviously the opportunity for
the FA to come down and watch, which has
hopefully been exciting for the participants. I think
they’ve got a lot out of working with the different
coaches.”
Beth, aged 14, said: “I think it was a really good
experience. Everyone was welcoming, really nice
and the sessions were really good. It was a good
day playing football.”
Teammate Scarlett, 15, went on to say: “It was
a very good opportunity. The organisers and
coaches were very helpful in aiding us complete
the different targets they wanted us to achieve.”
CAMERON JEROME ADDED
ANOTHER NOTCH TO HIS
PRODIGIOUS CAREER CV
WITH HIS FIRST EFL GOAL FOR
WANDERERS IN MID-WEEK.
Jerome’s first-half equaliser in Tuesday night’s
2-2 draw against Shrewsbury Town means he
has now scored League goals for nine different
clubs from Premier League to League One level.
The 37-year-old, who had previously netted
for the Whites in the EFL Trophy, took
his career tally to 161 goals – which also includes
eight in the Turkish Super League from a spell with
Goztepe.
Jerome’s scoring roll of honour domestically now
includes Cardiff City, Birmingham City, Stoke City,
Crystal Palace (on loan), Norwich City, Derby
County, MK Dons, Luton Town and Wanderers.
The former England U21 international also has
three promotion successes on his CV and believes
a fourth is still on the cards with Wanderers as he
looks to continue to bring his nous and experience
to Ian Evatt’s squad for whatever challenge lies
ahead over the next few weeks.
BOLTON COMMUNITY 10K
SUNDAY 28TH APRIL 2024
Over 1,000 runners have so far signed up to the
Bolton Community 10K and as we race towards
the end of the season, the race is on preparing
for this big community event on Sunday 28th
April.
Working in partnership with Bolton Wanderers
FC, Bolton Council, Bolton CVS and Burnden
Road Runners, the club’s official charity, Bolton
Wanderers in the Community, are the organisers of
this new run.
The event has been open to those looking to run
for fun, take on a personal challenge or to raise
funds for charity.
Sharon Brittan, Bolton Wanderers’ Chairman has
backed the run and said: “We are extremely proud
and excited to launch this new key event in Bolton’s
calendar.
“We want to make sure our Club is a platform for
good in our town and community, and so we are
delighted to be able to host this event which will
provide the opportunity to not only offer people
a personal challenge, but also to raise funds for a
local Bolton charity close to their heart.”
Over 30 local Bolton charities are being supported
by the run as people raise sponsorship for their
challenge, including runners raising funds for
The Wanderer | 37
Bolton Wanderers in the Community, supporting
the work with over 15,000 Bolton residents every
year.
Sue Johnson, Bolton Council Chief Executive
Officer, who is also backing the run, said: “We
know what this race will mean to all those local
runners, whether experienced or running for the
first time, so we are looking forward to another
memorable sporting day in our town.
“As a council we are always working to bring in
more events, which is why we want to support the
Bolton Community 10K Run and help showcase the
very best of Bolton.”
There is still just time until tomorrow to enter if you
wish.
Open to runners of all abilities, participants will
start at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, travel
up De Havilland Way, where they will merge onto
Chorley New Road heading towards Bolton, before
returning up Chorley New Road to finish at the
stadium. The route is chip timed and a closed road
route.
For more information, please contact events@
bwitc.org.uk
If you are running, all the best in your final
preparations and I will see you on the start line.
If not, please support in any way you can with
donations to the cause.
In the meantime, enjoy the game today and get
behind the lads for the final push.
LONDON WHITES
This season, BWFCST Affiliates London Whites
have once again been one of Wanderers’ player
sponsors. As in previous seasons, the London
supporters’ group have sponsored one of the
younger home-grown players.
This season began with Nelson Khumbeni being
the chosen player, with that transferring to Finlay
Lockett after Nelson’s loan to Morecambe. The
sponsor’s shirt presentation took place on the
BWFC Community Day and appropriately some
of the London Whites younger members did the
honours! Pictured with Lofty, and Findlay’s signed
shirt are (l-r) Jesse Wroe, Addy Wroe, Lily Grundy
The Youth Team also had a big game today as
they looked to keep alive their title hopes in
the EFL Youth Alliance.
Julian Darby’s side has enjoyed an excellent
season and with two games to go still had a
chance of winning the league title.
This morning’s home game against Preston
North End – who recently won the Youth
Alliance League Cup thanks to victory at
Portsmouth – was set to be key with the
Wanderers needing a victory to take their
challenge down to their final fixture.
In a four-horse race, Morecambe and Wrexham
are also in with a chance of topping the table.
Despite suffering several injury absences at
various points of the season, Darby’s youngsters
have stayed up with the pace, as well as
reaching the final of the LFA Professional Youth
Cup where they lost to Preston, in a highly
productive campaign.
The B Team enjoyed another useful
workout at Blackburn Rovers’ Academy on
Wednesday.
Andy Taylor’s side has suffered a number of
frustrating postponements in their Central
League programme.
But the players have still been given valuable
game-time in friendly fixtures with a game
against Shamrock Rovers last week being
following by the trip to Rovers.
Taylor took the chance to look at a number
of trialists as his side lost 4-3 with goals from
one of the trial players, Sam Inwood and Gez
Sithole, who is currently on loan at Chorley
and helping their quest to win promotion to the
National League.
