OUR HEAD COACH SETS THE<br />

SCENE FOR TODAY’S GAME...<br />

e have an incredible fanbase here<br />

at QPR, and I have no doubt that<br />

Wyou’ll get right behind us in our three<br />

remaining cup finals, starting today against<br />

<strong>Preston</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>End</strong>.<br />

Our target is always to be very strong at<br />

home and having two of the three remaining<br />

games here at MATRADE Loftus Road gives<br />

us confidence because we know our fans<br />

can make the difference. Since my arrival at<br />

the club we’ve achieved 20 points at home,<br />

out of 21 in total. But we know we have to<br />

perform at our best level if we want to take<br />

another three points this evening in what will<br />

be an extremely tough game.<br />

I would like to welcome <strong>Preston</strong>, their<br />

manager Ryan Lowe and his staff, their<br />

players and supporters. <strong>Preston</strong> are a strong<br />

side who are enjoying an excellent season<br />

and they still have a chance of making the<br />

play-offs, which tells you all you need to<br />

know about them.<br />

Since my last programme notes, it’s true that<br />

our last few results haven’t been what we’d<br />

hoped for given the good form we’d been<br />

in previously. However, that just reinforces<br />

the good work we put in before – it isn’t as if<br />

we were an amazing side a month ago and<br />

now we’re suddenly a terrible team. Since<br />

I’ve been here, one of this team’s hallmarks<br />

has been how stable we have been and how<br />

we have fought to achieve our objective,<br />

and we’re going to keep doing that. We’ve<br />

been out of the relegation zone for several<br />

match days now, but I’ve been saying all the<br />

time: the job is not done yet. The hard work,<br />

the attitude and desire to play football that<br />

the lads have shown since I’ve been here is<br />

commendable, and they’re giving every last<br />

ounce to reach our objective.<br />

I must say that the players’ reaction and the<br />

attitude we saw at Plymouth following the<br />

Sheffield Wednesday game is one of the<br />

things I’ve been most proud of since I was<br />

appointed as QPR head coach. The team<br />

came out all guns blazing and went all out<br />

for the win. We created enough chances to<br />

win that game comfortably, but we were<br />

punished by one of the few mistakes we<br />

made. However, as long as we keep creating<br />

chances and conceding few, we are on the<br />

right track to achieve victories.<br />

Last weekend, Hull were extremely clinical<br />

with their finishing, but sometimes you need<br />

to accept defeat as part of the journey to<br />

become a better team and move on quickly.<br />

We try to make the players aware that they’re<br />

capable of achieving anything, as they’ve<br />

proved several times before. They’re aware<br />

that we have three tough weeks ahead of us,<br />

in which we’ll be under constant pressure, but<br />

this group is used to that and they’re really<br />

up for the challenge. Now isn’t the time to<br />

be thinking about the Hull game – what’s in<br />

the past has now gone and there’s no way of<br />

changing anything, it’s just a case of trying<br />

to learn our lessons from it and today’s game<br />

against <strong>Preston</strong> is our only focus right now.<br />

Apart from Blackburn and Sheffield<br />

Wednesday, who play each other tomorrow,<br />

all of the other teams in our ‘mini-league’ will<br />

be in action before we are, but we must play<br />

our game, focusing on ourselves and our<br />

performance.<br />

Our destiny is in our own hands and, if we do<br />

what we have to do, we’ll achieve our target<br />

of Championship survival.<br />

Let’s be strong together – and get that win!<br />

JOHN GERARD<br />

PC John Gerard, who<br />

served as Dedicated<br />

Football Officer for QPR<br />

for more than eight years,<br />

passed away following a<br />

recent battle with illness.<br />

The club’s safety officer,<br />

Alex Fish, and former<br />

head of operations Josh<br />

Scott pay tribute to a<br />

much-loved colleague…<br />

“John was definitely a<br />

special guy, a very<br />

professional and<br />

approachable police<br />

officer whose commitment<br />

to the specialist role of a<br />

dedicated football officer<br />

was very evident. My<br />

relationship with the<br />

Metropolitan Police in<br />

general and John in<br />

particular was critical to<br />

the planning of events and<br />

to the running of games on<br />

event days. John’s part in<br />

that was immeasurable.<br />

His role went beyond this<br />

as he had the<br />

responsibility for attending<br />

away games as well. His<br />

relationship with the fans<br />

was beyond anyone’s<br />

expectations and he had a<br />

working rapport with them<br />

where they could<br />

communicate with him<br />

direct via his mobile. This<br />

is not something I have<br />

seen work successfully<br />

elsewhere. John will be<br />

sadly missed by all who<br />

worked with him. RIP.”<br />

“John was truly one of a<br />

kind, a huge loss for all at<br />

QPR and the Metropolitan<br />

Police. I know many fans<br />

that knew of John will<br />

remember the way he<br />

seamlessly integrated with<br />

supporters, and his<br />

personal approach to<br />

managing safety on<br />

matchdays. Even as a West<br />

Ham fan, John was<br />

passionate about QPR on<br />

and off the pitch and had<br />

the ability to demonstrate<br />

this in his police work when<br />

speaking with supporters.<br />

I’ll always remember in<br />

2020, when John called me<br />

on a weekly basis about<br />

when fans would be allowed<br />

back into Loftus Road, as<br />

patrolling an empty stadium<br />

wasn’t his cup of tea and he<br />

wanted the fans back! John<br />

was not just a police<br />

colleague to us all at QPR,<br />

he was a dear friend, and<br />

his presence around<br />

MATRADE Loftus Road<br />

will be missed for years<br />

to come.”<br />

Lucas, what’s the feeling around the<br />

dressing-room as we approach our last<br />

few games of the season?<br />

Over the last few months we’ve been<br />

doing really well and I think we’ve shown<br />

that everything is possible. We’re doing<br />

everything we can to achieve the highest<br />

possible level with our performances and<br />

the work people put in every day at the<br />

club is amazing. Most important is probably<br />

the mood, to keep on pushing and building,<br />

because that’s the foundation of a team<br />

– to push together and everyone wants to<br />

achieve something for the person sitting<br />

next to them. So I feel the mood is good<br />

and confident but of course there’s also<br />

a certain amount of stress linked to that,<br />

because of what it means for everyone at<br />

the club and the fans.<br />

You played under Marti Cifuentes at your<br />

previous club Aalborg. What did you learn<br />

about Marti as a coach that made you want<br />

to rejoin him here at QPR?<br />

First of all is the way he sets a structure<br />

for a club and a team, doing things in a<br />

certain way and wanting to bring out the<br />

players’ best abilities – he figures out a<br />

way to make sure everyone reaches their<br />

highest level. Marti’s a very modern coach<br />

with a good mix of being really demanding<br />

on the pitch and then off the pitch,<br />

switching to stuff that I’d call the human<br />

approach and having a conversation with<br />

you about whatever. I think you have to<br />

switch between being very serious and very<br />

structured on the football aspects and also<br />

having another side to what you do.<br />

Your agent Mikkel Beck played for QPR<br />

– did that connection also influence your<br />

move to the club?<br />

Definitely, Mikkel was really enthusiastic<br />

about it when we felt we were getting<br />

closer to a move. He had a very good<br />

period of time here, he was very happy<br />

with the club, the stadium and the fans –<br />

and all of this I can also confirm! There’s<br />

the atmosphere, the whole feeling around<br />

football that it’s a lifestyle over here –<br />

not just something you go to watch because<br />

you want a little Saturday or Sunday<br />

entertainment. Not that it isn’t like that<br />

in other countries I’ve played in, but I just<br />

feel it’s really deep in a family’s core that<br />

they are QPR supporters and they have<br />

been for many years. That’s what I really<br />

like about QPR and it’s also what Mikkel<br />

told me, that this is an amazing place and<br />

you’ll have that feeling in the stadium that<br />

it really means everything, every time you<br />

step onto the pitch.<br />

Were you always interested in<br />

experiencing English football at some<br />

stage in your career?<br />

Yes, it’s always been a dream to experience<br />

it – and if you ask anyone who knows<br />

me, they would say that too. The outside<br />

opinion on English leagues is that they’re<br />

very tough, competitive and maybe the<br />

way it was 20 years ago when there was<br />

another type of football, people would<br />

have said ‘it’s not for you’. But I always<br />

dreamed about it and I just wanted it to<br />

happen – no matter what it took, I would<br />

do everything to come here. Now that I’m<br />

here, it feels amazing to be able to make<br />

that move at my age, to compete and be<br />

in a good team at a historical club.<br />

What more do you want? Also at the point<br />

where I was in my career, things were a<br />

little bit stuck, so I’m really grateful to get<br />

this opportunity.<br />

You set up a goal for Michael Frey on<br />

your QPR debut against Norwich, did that<br />

help you to settle more quickly into a new<br />

environment?<br />

When you enter a new group, it’s always<br />

nice to show everyone around the club and<br />

the fans what you’re capable of, that you<br />

want to contribute and you’re here to bring<br />

something. For me, it’s always been a big<br />

part of my game to score goals and get<br />

assists, game-deciding stuff – that’s the<br />

kind of player I want to be. So of course it<br />

helps a lot when you have a good start and<br />

it also boosts your confidence and brings in<br />

a good vibe for your team-mates.<br />

Today’s opponents, <strong>Preston</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>End</strong>,<br />

include two Danish players in Mads Frokjaer<br />

and Emil Riis. What do you know about<br />

them?<br />

Well, they’re both good players. Frokjaer<br />

is very technical with a good drive, he’s in<br />

a category that’s quite similar to my way<br />

of playing and he’s had a good start at<br />

<strong>Preston</strong>, from what I’ve heard. Riis is like<br />

a pure striker with a good shot, quite fast<br />

and he’s also been doing well. I think it also<br />

shows the Danish league is at quite a good<br />

level and it’s always exciting to see how<br />

fellow countrymen are doing, to cross paths<br />

with them and see who wins the battle – so<br />

I’m looking forward to it.<br />

So far, you’ve come close to scoring quite a<br />

few times – would it be a dream scenario for<br />

your first QPR goal to be the one that keeps<br />

the club in the Championship?<br />

That would be the most epic dream, I think!<br />

That’s what I want to do, deciding games for<br />

the team and I feel I’ve been moving closer<br />

to getting that goal, hitting the crossbar<br />

twice and having a couple of other chances<br />

I could have put in. So I think we’re closing<br />

in on that goal and I can’t think of a better<br />

moment than just to put one in today at a<br />

full Loftus Road – that would be amazing.<br />

Many a football fan will tell<br />

you that it’s incredibly difficult<br />

to support their team.<br />

I will usually ignore the<br />

bleating from the big<br />

six who don’t get what<br />

they want, while their<br />

team reached the semifinal<br />

or final of another<br />

competition, devaluing<br />

competitions as they<br />

go because it isn’t the<br />

Champions League. I look<br />

at what we’ve experienced<br />

in the last few weeks, and<br />

yeah guess what, it ain’t<br />

easy being QPR.<br />

Not sure if anyone else<br />

can relate to this, but I’ve<br />

had friends, colleagues<br />

and family members say<br />

variations of ‘you guys are<br />

safe now’. Anyone who’s<br />

ever watched QPR, or has a<br />

general awareness of what<br />

this club does, will know it’s<br />

not as simple as some may<br />

suggest. If I have to say “I<br />

think one more win might do<br />

it, but I’m still nervous” one<br />

more time, I might scream.<br />

You see, supporting a team<br />

like QPR is the ultimate<br />

love-hate relationship. At<br />

the start of the season, I was<br />

looking for any excuse to not<br />

go to games. The prospect<br />

of a win very unlikely, losses<br />

almost guaranteed. That’s<br />

where you might hate the<br />

fact you support this team.<br />

But then you get moments<br />

like Jimmy Dunne’s goal, and<br />

all of a sudden everything<br />

seems that little bit better.<br />

The team we played that<br />

day, Birmingham, were<br />

quite awful. I remember<br />

thinking: if we don’t beat<br />

this lot then we probably<br />

deserve relegation. The<br />

goal in itself is beautiful,<br />

but then you start adding<br />

layers of context on top<br />

and it becomes all the more<br />

remarkable.<br />

A player who had struggled<br />

this season with form,<br />

converted to right-back<br />

from centre-back and then<br />

relishing the opportunity to<br />

become the best rightback<br />

possibly the world has<br />

seen (slight exaggeration<br />

there). Football is such a<br />

simple game – why didn’t<br />

anyone else think to convert<br />

their centre-back into a<br />

marauding right-back, who<br />

can smash the ball into the<br />

back of the net, from the<br />

edge of the box, on the<br />

volley and on his weaker<br />

foot? If we stay up, we<br />

stay up because of that<br />

goal – it’s more than good<br />

enough in its own right to be<br />

remembered as such.<br />

We now face three teams<br />

with varying degrees of<br />

ambition left for their<br />

season, <strong>Preston</strong> have<br />

an outside chance of<br />

the play-offs, Coventry<br />

the opportunity to make<br />

numerous trips to Wembley<br />

and then there’s Leeds. One<br />

of the sides competing for<br />

automatic promotion and<br />

the title, and yet seemingly<br />

they don’t fancy winning<br />

the division or reaching the<br />

Premier League. It feels<br />

like all of those teams are<br />

politely saying to the others<br />

‘no, after you, please’ in<br />

the revolving door that is<br />

the top three. Home form<br />

will be crucial to sealing our<br />

Championship status, and<br />

I think both are winnable,<br />

especially Leeds with their<br />

cold form at the moment.<br />

All I want is nothing to be<br />

riding on that game against<br />

Coventry, because then I’m<br />

not confident at all.<br />

disappointing matches<br />

I have attended as a<br />

<strong>Queens</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>Rangers</strong><br />

supporter are coming back<br />

to haunt me on Twitter, or<br />

X, many years later.<br />

I was there at Wembley<br />

Stadium when we were<br />

firm favourites, yet lost<br />

3-0 to Oxford United in the<br />

1986 Milk Cup final. Man of<br />

the match for Oxford and<br />

scorer of their second goal<br />

that day was Ray Houghton.<br />

Meanwhile, the referee<br />

was Keith Hackett – and<br />

nowadays both Houghton<br />

and Hackett are among my<br />

Twitter followers.<br />

Another devastating<br />

result was our 1-0 play-off<br />

final defeat against Cardiff<br />

City at the Millennium<br />

Stadium in 2003. Andy<br />

Campbell lobbed the<br />

Bluebirds’ decisive goal<br />

in extra time and yes, you<br />

guessed it – Campbell<br />

follows me on Twitter.<br />

In my opinion, QPR hit rock<br />

bottom in losing at home to<br />

non-league minnows Vauxhall<br />

Motors in the FA Cup first<br />

round replay in 2002. That<br />

result still makes me shudder<br />

– especially when I see<br />

Vauxhall Motors as one of my<br />

Twitter followers.<br />

At least I am spared<br />

the indignity of being<br />

followed by Partizan<br />

Belgrade. My trip there for<br />

the UEFA Cup tie in 1984 was<br />

my all-time worst <strong>Rangers</strong><br />

supporting experience.<br />

Things turned very nasty<br />

indeed amidst the most<br />

hostile football atmosphere I<br />

have ever encountered.<br />

To compound matters,<br />

<strong>Rangers</strong> led 6-2 from the<br />

first leg in London but lost<br />

that return game 4-0 – so<br />

a 6-6 aggregate where we<br />

were knocked out of Europe<br />

on the away goals rule.<br />

I might just block Partizan<br />

Belgrade on Twitter to<br />

make sure they never come<br />

elcome back to MATRADE Loftus<br />

Road for today’s Championship<br />

W game against <strong>Preston</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>End</strong>.<br />

<strong>Preston</strong> have had another good season,<br />

but following their midweek defeat at<br />

Southampton it looks like they will miss out on<br />

getting into the play-off positions. However,<br />

I am sure they will want to make a strong<br />

finish to the season and end as high as<br />

they can in the table and, as always, they<br />

will prove really tough opponents for us to<br />

overcome this afternoon.<br />

Since my last notes we have not had the results<br />

we wanted in those three games. The Sheffield<br />

Wednesday game was one where we never<br />

really got going and fell way short of the levels<br />

of performance the team have been showing<br />

in previous games. We then headed down to<br />

Plymouth for what we all knew would be a vital<br />

game for both teams. I thought we bounced<br />

back with a good performance where, for the<br />

vast majority of the game, we were the better<br />

side and in control. We created chances and<br />

opportunities to win it comfortably but, having<br />

gone ahead through a close-range effort from<br />

Sam Field, we failed to deal with a corner well<br />

enough and unfortunately were pegged back<br />

late in the game. I think everyone connected to<br />

QPR left feeling we had let two vital points slip<br />

from our grasp. Still, as I know from my own<br />

experiences in the game over many years, this<br />

happens – you have to put the disappointment<br />

behind you and move on quickly.<br />

Last weekend we travelled to Hull, who I think<br />

are a very good side and play in a really good<br />

way. They have talented individual players<br />

who can cause you problems and that proved<br />

to be the case. We went behind early in the<br />

game from a tremendous long-range strike<br />

and they scored a well-worked second goal<br />

just before the half-hour mark to increase<br />

their lead. We had a great chance just after<br />

half-time, which possibly could have changed<br />

the flow of the game before we fell further<br />

behind to another excellent strike a couple<br />

of minutes later. So we left Hull well beaten<br />

and knowing that we still have work to do<br />

in the remaining three games to secure our<br />

Championship status.<br />

That leads us onto today’s game which is<br />

hugely important, as we all know. With it being<br />

a late kick-off, we will start the game knowing<br />

the results of many of the teams around us<br />

in the table. While we will all be aware of<br />

what has happened, we cannot control or<br />

influence that in any shape or form. What<br />

we can control and influence is ourselves<br />

and that must be the focus of everyone<br />

involved – only what we do matters. There<br />

will be apprehension and nerves around the<br />

stadium, which is understandable, but we have<br />

to accept and manage that and embrace the<br />

challenge in front of us this evening. I know<br />

Marti, his staff and all the squad will be well<br />

prepared and ready for this.<br />

Two weeks ago, it was great to once again<br />

take part in the Tiger Feet 14 walk from our<br />

training ground to the stadium to raise<br />

money for our QPR Down’s Syndrome team.<br />

As always, the event was a great success<br />

and I thank everyone who participated by<br />

doing the walk and everyone who very kindly<br />

donated to such a wonderful cause. That<br />

support and generosity is hugely appreciated<br />

and really makes a big difference to all<br />

involved with the Tiger Cubs.<br />

On a sad note, we were deeply saddened to<br />

hear of the sad passing of Tom Hyett at the<br />

age of 88. Tom was a steward and friendly<br />

face for more than 58 years and the club’s<br />

longest serving member of staff. He fulfilled<br />

many roles as a steward at the club in that<br />

time and was honoured in 2020 when he won<br />

the Unsung Hero award. Our thoughts and<br />

condolences are with all Tom’s friends and<br />

family and may he rest in peace.<br />

As a club, we were also deeply saddened<br />

to hear of the passing of PC John Gerard<br />

recently following a battle with illness. John<br />

was a recognisable figure with the R’s fans<br />

for a number of years and was part of the<br />

Metropolitan Police unit that travelled up<br />

and down the country with the travelling<br />

supporters. He was hugely respected by<br />

everyone who met him and, with his kind and<br />

approachable nature, he made sure trips<br />

away were organised and safe. Everyone<br />

at QPR would like to pass on our heartfelt<br />

condolences to John’s family and friends and<br />

may he rest in peace.<br />

A minute’s applause for both Tom and John will<br />

be held before the game where, as a club, we<br />

recognise the contribution both made to QPR.<br />

Once again, can I thank every single QPR fan<br />

for the incredible support you have given the<br />

team throughout the season both home and<br />

away. That incredible support has played a<br />

huge part in helping us get to a position in<br />

the table where, with three games left of the<br />

season, our destiny in terms of Championship<br />

survival is in our own hands.<br />

A few months ago and from where we were<br />

then, I believe we all would have taken that<br />

and, having worked so hard on and off the<br />

pitch to put ourselves in this position – we<br />

have to finish the job!!!<br />

Again, I urge you to get behind the team from<br />

the first whistle to the last and push them all<br />

the way. Let’s create a great atmosphere<br />

inside the stadium that can help Marti, his<br />

staff and all the team get the three points we<br />

need this evening<br />

The Lilywhites have ended each season<br />

somewhere between seventh and 14th since<br />

they returned to the Championship in 2015,<br />

but a blistering start to the current campaign<br />

hinted they could certainly aim higher.<br />

Ryan Lowe’s side reeled off six straight<br />

victories in August and September to head<br />

the table, but a 4-0 defeat to West Brom<br />

at Deepdale ended their unbeaten start in<br />

severe fashion and they failed to win any of<br />

the five games that followed.<br />

Since then, consistency has eluded <strong>North</strong> <strong>End</strong><br />

– with Christmas approaching, they suffered<br />

another two four-goal losses against<br />

Middlesbrough and Watford but then saw off<br />

Leeds 2-1 at Deepdale on Boxing Day.<br />

<strong>Preston</strong> appeared to be firmly back on<br />

track during February, stringing together<br />

consecutive victories over Ipswich, Cardiff<br />

and Middlesbrough and ending the month<br />

with a 3-0 triumph at Coventry that put them<br />

on the brink of the top six again.<br />

More recently, though, they slipped up<br />

against Stoke and Birmingham and a<br />

comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Southampton<br />

on Tuesday means the Lilywhites head to<br />

W12 with only a razor-thin mathematical<br />

chance of making the top six.<br />

Taarabt set QPR on their way to a dominant<br />

demolition job against <strong>Preston</strong>.<br />

Taarabt made his dramatic impact after 11<br />

minutes as he picked up possession on the<br />

halfway line, swivelled his hips past a host of<br />

despairing defenders and then sent a stunning<br />

shot into the top corner from 25 yards.<br />

The other marksmen for Jim Magilton’s side<br />

were Akos Buzsaky (62 minutes, penalty), Jay<br />

Simpson (74) and Wayne Routledge (85).<br />

In a match report in The Sun newspaper, Vikki<br />

Orvice wrote: “Adel Taarabt’s idol as a kid<br />

growing up in Marseille was Eric Cantona.<br />

“So when the midfielder unleashed a 25-yard<br />

volley past (goalkeeper) Andy Lonergan to<br />

open the scoring for <strong>Rangers</strong>, all he needed<br />

was to pull up his collar to roll back the years.”<br />

The MailOnline match report read: “Rodney<br />

Marsh was at Loftus Road to witness an Adel<br />

Taarabt goal he would have been more than<br />

happy to call his own. It was a virtuoso effort<br />

that had <strong>Rangers</strong> celebrating what was to be<br />

the start of a rout.<br />

“For those <strong>Rangers</strong> fans who have a long<br />

association with the west London outpost, it<br />

would have brought back memories of the good<br />

old days of Marsh, Bowles, Francis and co.<br />

so hard to sign him from his French club Lens<br />

“Jim just didn’t know what to<br />

do – whatever he spent, he<br />

couldn’t seem to solve the<br />

problem. So he said to me:<br />

‘What about a plastic pitch?’<br />

We chatted for a while and<br />

he said: ‘There are no rules to<br />

say we can’t!’<br />

“So I said: ‘Come on then<br />

– we’ll do it!’ And we went<br />

for it.”<br />

Other Football League clubs<br />

who laid similar artificial<br />

surfaces during the 1980s<br />

were Luton (obviously<br />

impressed by the inaugural<br />

match!), Oldham Athletic and<br />

<strong>Preston</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>End</strong>.<br />

But as time progressed,<br />

journalists and opposing<br />

clubs moaned about the<br />

excessive bounce of the ball<br />

and difficulties in making<br />

sliding tackles due to players<br />

getting “carpet burns”.<br />

The Omniturf revolution in<br />

Shepherd’s Bush lasted for<br />

seven seasons before QPR<br />

decided to rip up the plastic<br />

at the end of the 1987/88<br />

campaign. A natural grass<br />

surface has prevailed here<br />

ever since.<br />

Marcus, our promotion to<br />

the Championship 20<br />

years ago was a great time<br />

for the club…<br />

It was a really good time<br />

for the club. All I remember<br />

was that QPR had suffered<br />

financial problems and lots<br />

going on off the pitch in<br />

the years before that, but I<br />

think it brought us together<br />

on the pitch. As a club,<br />

everyone was really behind<br />

the boys, so it was a great<br />

promotion-winning season<br />

for all involved.<br />

Having come up through the<br />

youth ranks, you knew <strong>Queens</strong><br />

<strong>Park</strong> <strong>Rangers</strong> inside out…<br />

I first joined <strong>Rangers</strong> at<br />

the age of 10 so it was a<br />

big part of mine and my<br />

family’s lives all the way<br />

through. Obviously I had<br />

seen some great players<br />

appear for the R’s, then it<br />

was a privilege when I finally<br />

made my debut and winning<br />

promotion in 2003/04 was<br />

very special.<br />

We had lost the play-off<br />

final 1-0 against Cardiff City<br />

the previous season – so did<br />

that defeat make everyone<br />

at QPR more determined to<br />

gain automatic promotion in<br />

2003/04?<br />

It did, I think. The manner<br />

of that defeat against<br />

Cardiff really hurt us so,<br />

the following year, we were<br />

determined to go one better.<br />

We were also used to the<br />

challenge and the pressures<br />

of being at the top. That<br />

definitely aided us in our<br />

promotion bid.<br />

There were a couple of<br />

additions to our squad<br />

in Martin Rowlands and<br />

Gareth Ainsworth, what did<br />

they add to everything?<br />

‘Rowly’ and ‘Gaz’ were very<br />

different players but both<br />

really effective. Rowly was<br />

one of the most technically<br />

gifted footballers I ever<br />

played alongside. His ball<br />

striking with both feet was<br />

so clean. On top of that, his<br />

aggression and willingness<br />

to fight for the cause gave<br />

everyone a lift immediately.<br />

As soon as Rowly went on<br />

the pitch, we knew we had<br />

found ourselves a top quality<br />

team-mate. Meanwhile,<br />

Gaz’s general enthusiasm<br />

and the way he was around<br />

the changing-room boosted<br />

morale and some of the<br />

goals he scored were<br />

outrageous. When you get<br />

someone who can produce<br />

something out of nothing, it<br />

is a great addition. So those<br />

two were key players for us.<br />

You were only 19-20 in<br />

that promotion-winning<br />

campaign, but you played 31<br />

league games which was a<br />

decent tally for a young lad…<br />

It was – and I’ll be honest,<br />

when I went into that season<br />

I probably wasn’t expecting<br />

to play so many matches. So<br />

credit to the manager Ian<br />

Holloway for giving me that<br />

opportunity and sticking with<br />

me ahead of some senior<br />

lads at times. In terms of<br />

what I brought to the team, I<br />

was the youngest player with<br />

my youthful enthusiasm and<br />

energy to get around the<br />

pitch to supplement some of<br />

the more experienced boys.<br />

You scored one goal that<br />

season, away to Wrexham<br />

as part of a 2-0 win in<br />

September. Do you recall<br />

that strike?<br />

I do remember it. Someone<br />

played a slick ball into the<br />

box and I think ‘Furs’ (Paul<br />

Furlong) was involved. He<br />

couldn’t quite get hold of<br />

it and it broke to me as I<br />

arrived fairly late. I just<br />

managed to feed my shot<br />

past the keeper. I celebrated<br />

excitedly like a Jack-in-thebox<br />

as I didn’t score many<br />

but the boys got around me<br />

and held me down! It was a<br />

good away performance,<br />

that one.<br />

Did it help that there were<br />

a couple of lifelong QPR<br />

supporters in Marc Bircham<br />

and Kevin Gallen actually<br />

playing for our team?<br />

Yeah – ‘Tweedledum and<br />

Tweedledee’ as I call<br />

them, because they were<br />

as thick as thieves! It did<br />

help because QPR meant<br />

everything to those guys.<br />

They set the standards<br />

for what was expected as<br />

the bare minimum for the<br />

fans. Supporters expect the<br />

players to work hard and<br />

run hard. ‘Birch’ and Kev<br />

wouldn’t let anyone come in<br />

and not do that, they were<br />

quick to tell you if you didn’t<br />

do the basics.<br />

We sealed promotion on<br />

the final day by winning 3-1<br />

at Sheffield Wednesday.<br />

Some 7,200 jubilant R’s<br />

fans packed out the away<br />

end and it was a wonderful<br />

occasion…<br />

I wasn’t involved towards<br />

the end of the season and<br />

I was disappointed, but I<br />

believe the gaffer just went<br />

for more experience really. I<br />

was young and these things<br />

happen so you just have to<br />

get on with it, although it’s<br />

not as if I didn’t play my part<br />

that year. Anyway, I recall I<br />

was at Hillsborough for the<br />

big fixture. I travelled with<br />

the squad and I went to sit<br />

among the QPR supporters<br />

to cheer the boys on, so<br />

I was in the middle of the<br />

celebrations! It was a great<br />

day that I’ll never forget.<br />

Any time you achieve<br />

anything with a good group<br />

of lads is always special and<br />

it was amazing for the loyal<br />

R’s fans after some tough<br />

times.<br />

A few days later, there was<br />

an open top bus parade<br />

leading to a civic reception<br />

at the town hall. Again,<br />

thousands of <strong>Rangers</strong> fans<br />

were present…<br />

It was a great night, fair<br />

play to the club and the<br />

local council for arranging<br />

that event. All the players<br />

‘Ollie’ is a man where what<br />

you see is what you get.<br />

Every day was different,<br />

there was never a dull<br />

moment at the training<br />

ground. It was impossible<br />

not to reciprocate his<br />

enthusiasm and energy – he<br />

would drag you up when<br />

you were down. His main<br />

attribute was his manmanagement<br />

and his ability<br />

to motivate players. He had<br />

some philosophical stories<br />

too, so he made me think not<br />

just about football but about<br />

life and the importance of<br />

being a good person by<br />

treating others with respect.<br />

White at half-time.<br />

‘…I was surprised by the low crowd<br />

for the Arsenal game (11,442). I know<br />

it’s the end of the season, and there<br />

wasn’t a great deal on the game, but<br />

the support for both teams in our<br />

meetings in recent years has been very<br />

good. Maybe the all-ticket situation and<br />

having three home games on the trot<br />

had something to do with it. Certainly if<br />

the West Ham and Arsenal games were<br />

played when they were scheduled then<br />

we’d have had full houses.<br />

‘Unfortunately, the youth team failed<br />

in their bid for the ‘treble’ when they<br />

lost in the semi-final of the Southern<br />

Junior Floodlit Cup at Tottenham.<br />

Nevertheless, it’s been a tremendous<br />

season for them, winning the League<br />

and League Cup.’<br />

winning the South East Counties League<br />

Cup against West Ham last week, they<br />

have now added the League title. I<br />

remember back in 1968 my first medal<br />

as a QPR player came when we won<br />

the South East Counties League. I was<br />

very proud of that then, and I’m even<br />

prouder now as manager of the club<br />

as the youth side go for an incredible<br />

treble. Having won the League and the<br />

League Cup, they now have a chance<br />

of winning the Southern Junior Floodlit<br />

Cup. Whether or not they get the<br />

treble, this season has been a fantastic<br />

achievement for everyone involved with<br />

the youth team…To see around 4,000<br />

people at Loftus Road for the second<br />

leg of the final was fantastic, and<br />

hopefully, with the youth team winning<br />

a bit of silverware, it might rub off on<br />

the first team because, as you all know,<br />

nothing would give me greater pleasure<br />

than to win something at <strong>Rangers</strong>.<br />

GARETH AINSWORTH<br />

(2023)<br />

Former QPR winger Gareth<br />

Ainsworth returned to the<br />

club as boss for an eightmonth<br />

period last year<br />

following the departure of<br />

Neil Critchley.<br />

Ainsworth was born on 10th<br />

May 1973 in Blackburn. As<br />

well as <strong>Rangers</strong>, his playing<br />

career also took in spells at<br />

<strong>North</strong>wich Victoria, <strong>Preston</strong><br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>End</strong>, Cambridge<br />

United, Lincoln City, Port<br />

Vale, Wimbledon, Walsall,<br />

Cardiff City and Wycombe<br />

Wanderers. He has also<br />

featured in a rock band as<br />

lead singer.<br />

Signing for the R’s on a free<br />

transfer from Cardiff in July<br />

2003, he went on to make<br />

152 appearances in a hooped<br />

shirt – scoring 21 goals – and<br />

was installed as player-coach<br />

in May 2008, prior to a<br />

couple of caretaker manager<br />

stints at the club.<br />

Ainsworth moved to Wycombe<br />

as a player in February 2010<br />

following a successful loan<br />

and became the Chairboys’<br />

caretaker boss in September<br />

2012 prior to being named<br />

as their permanent playermanager<br />

two months later.<br />

After retiring from<br />

professional football at the<br />

end of the 2012/13 season,<br />

Ainsworth continued as<br />

Wycombe boss until 21st<br />

February 2023 when he was<br />

appointed QPR’s head coach.<br />

He said at the time: “<strong>Queens</strong><br />

<strong>Park</strong> <strong>Rangers</strong> is the club<br />

where I was most known for<br />

playing and you get moments<br />

in your career that resonate<br />

with you forever. I loved<br />

my time here as a player<br />

and hopefully I can go on<br />

and love my time here as a<br />

manager as well.<br />

“This is going to be a real<br />

challenge because the club is<br />

so special to me and so huge<br />

as well. I want to get Loftus<br />

Road absolutely rocking again.”<br />

However, Ainsworth was<br />

relieved of his position on<br />

28th October last year after<br />

a disappointing run.<br />

MARTI CIFUENTES<br />

(2023-)<br />

Two days after Ainsworth’s<br />

departure from the club,<br />

QPR named Marti Cifuentes<br />

as the club’s new head coach.<br />

Cifuentes was born on 7th July<br />

1982 in Catalonia, Spain. As<br />

well as coaching in the youth<br />

set-ups at Ajax and Millwall,<br />

he has spent more than a<br />

decade working at firstteam<br />

level in Spain, Norway,<br />

Denmark and Sweden.<br />

As coach of Swedish club<br />

Hammarby, he led them<br />

to third and seventh-place<br />

finish before departing to<br />

take charge at QPR.<br />

On his arrival in W12,<br />

Cifuentes said: “This is a<br />

fantastic historical club. We<br />

need to keep it alive. We<br />

need to be angry when we<br />

lose, very happy when we win<br />

– I love that passion.<br />

“It is about the identity. We<br />

are going to try to regain<br />

the ball quick, we are going<br />

to use the ball to move<br />

the opponent, not just to<br />

look fancy in possession<br />

or pretend having the ball<br />

around our centre-backs will<br />

make us a better team.”<br />

director) Chris Ramsey, and ever since<br />

then it’s been QPR.<br />

Why football?<br />

Winning.<br />

What are your strengths as a player?<br />

Definitely running with the ball and 1v1<br />

attacking. I’d say my shooting and<br />

passing as well.<br />

What do you need to work on to get better?<br />

My weaknesses are probably my<br />

positioning – playing across the front line<br />

and in midfield means sometimes I can<br />

get caught out.<br />

Do you have any superstitions before a<br />

game?<br />

I don’t have any specific superstitions<br />

before a match. I just always make sure<br />

that I pray, think about God and be the best<br />

that I can be.<br />

What professional player can you see<br />

elements of yourself in?<br />

It depends what position! I would go for<br />

either Paul Pogba or Bukayo Saka.<br />

What is the highlight of your career so far?<br />

Scoring three in my district final was a very<br />

good day for me.<br />

The end of another<br />

challenging season is<br />

almost upon us.<br />

And unlike in many of the<br />

most recent years, there<br />

is still so much to play<br />

for. I can’t recall another<br />

campaign where the<br />

situation at the bottom of<br />

the Championship is as tight<br />

as now.<br />

From where we were last<br />

autumn, and even for a spell<br />

after the turn of the year –<br />

we’ve fought our way back<br />

into survival contention. Even<br />

allowing for a couple of poor<br />

results against Sheffield<br />

Wednesday and at Hull, our<br />

destiny is in our hands.<br />

I regret falling asleep 20<br />

minutes into our defeat at<br />

Hull. Whenever I’ve done<br />

this in the past, I’ve always<br />

woken up after full-time with<br />

the team having lost!<br />

Another regret is that Marti<br />

Cifuentes didn’t get hold of<br />

this squad earlier than he<br />

did. Our form since he took<br />

over would have had QPR in<br />

the top half of the table.<br />

Nonetheless, there is<br />

work to be done – and that<br />

starts today in a fixture that<br />

has caused us problems<br />

since we came down from<br />

the Premier League.<br />

My belief is that one more<br />

win might be enough to<br />

keep us up. We are helped<br />

by the fact that a number of<br />

teams below us have to play<br />

each other.<br />

the ensuing campaign under<br />

to be published. I’m happy<br />

to right that wrong all these<br />
