MARTI
OUR HEAD COACH SETS THE
SCENE FOR TODAY’S GAME...
e have an incredible fanbase here
at QPR, and I have no doubt that
Wyou’ll get right behind us in our three
remaining cup finals, starting today against
Preston North End.
Our target is always to be very strong at
home and having two of the three remaining
games here at MATRADE Loftus Road gives
us confidence because we know our fans
can make the difference. Since my arrival at
the club we’ve achieved 20 points at home,
out of 21 in total. But we know we have to
perform at our best level if we want to take
another three points this evening in what will
be an extremely tough game.
I would like to welcome Preston, their
manager Ryan Lowe and his staff, their
players and supporters. Preston are a strong
side who are enjoying an excellent season
and they still have a chance of making the
play-offs, which tells you all you need to
know about them.
Since my last programme notes, it’s true that
our last few results haven’t been what we’d
hoped for given the good form we’d been
in previously. However, that just reinforces
the good work we put in before – it isn’t as if
we were an amazing side a month ago and
now we’re suddenly a terrible team. Since
I’ve been here, one of this team’s hallmarks
has been how stable we have been and how
we have fought to achieve our objective,
and we’re going to keep doing that. We’ve
been out of the relegation zone for several
match days now, but I’ve been saying all the
time: the job is not done yet. The hard work,
the attitude and desire to play football that
the lads have shown since I’ve been here is
commendable, and they’re giving every last
ounce to reach our objective.
I must say that the players’ reaction and the
attitude we saw at Plymouth following the
Sheffield Wednesday game is one of the
things I’ve been most proud of since I was
appointed as QPR head coach. The team
came out all guns blazing and went all out
for the win. We created enough chances to
win that game comfortably, but we were
punished by one of the few mistakes we
made. However, as long as we keep creating
chances and conceding few, we are on the
right track to achieve victories.
Last weekend, Hull were extremely clinical
with their finishing, but sometimes you need
to accept defeat as part of the journey to
become a better team and move on quickly.
We try to make the players aware that they’re
capable of achieving anything, as they’ve
proved several times before. They’re aware
that we have three tough weeks ahead of us,
in which we’ll be under constant pressure, but
this group is used to that and they’re really
up for the challenge. Now isn’t the time to
be thinking about the Hull game – what’s in
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
the past has now gone and there’s no way of
changing anything, it’s just a case of trying
to learn our lessons from it and today’s game
against Preston is our only focus right now.
Apart from Blackburn and Sheffield
Wednesday, who play each other tomorrow,
all of the other teams in our ‘mini-league’ will
be in action before we are, but we must play
our game, focusing on ourselves and our
performance.
Our destiny is in our own hands and, if we do
what we have to do, we’ll achieve our target
of Championship survival.
Let’s be strong together – and get that win!
REMEMBERING
JOHN GERARD
PC John Gerard, who
served as Dedicated
Football Officer for QPR
for more than eight years,
passed away following a
recent battle with illness.
The club’s safety officer,
Alex Fish, and former
head of operations Josh
Scott pay tribute to a
much-loved colleague…
“John was definitely a
special guy, a very
professional and
approachable police
officer whose commitment
to the specialist role of a
dedicated football officer
was very evident. My
relationship with the
Metropolitan Police in
general and John in
particular was critical to
the planning of events and
to the running of games on
event days. John’s part in
that was immeasurable.
His role went beyond this
as he had the
responsibility for attending
away games as well. His
relationship with the fans
was beyond anyone’s
expectations and he had a
working rapport with them
where they could
communicate with him
direct via his mobile. This
is not something I have
seen work successfully
elsewhere. John will be
sadly missed by all who
worked with him. RIP.”
Alex Fish
“John was truly one of a
kind, a huge loss for all at
QPR and the Metropolitan
Police. I know many fans
that knew of John will
remember the way he
seamlessly integrated with
supporters, and his
personal approach to
managing safety on
matchdays. Even as a West
Ham fan, John was
passionate about QPR on
and off the pitch and had
the ability to demonstrate
this in his police work when
speaking with supporters.
I’ll always remember in
2020, when John called me
on a weekly basis about
when fans would be allowed
back into Loftus Road, as
patrolling an empty stadium
wasn’t his cup of tea and he
wanted the fans back! John
was not just a police
colleague to us all at QPR,
he was a dear friend, and
his presence around
MATRADE Loftus Road
will be missed for years
to come.”
INTERVIEW: BEN KOSKY
SIGNED FROM HOMETOWN CLUB AALBORG
Lucas, what’s the feeling around the
dressing-room as we approach our last
few games of the season?
Over the last few months we’ve been
doing really well and I think we’ve shown
that everything is possible. We’re doing
everything we can to achieve the highest
possible level with our performances and
the work people put in every day at the
club is amazing. Most important is probably
the mood, to keep on pushing and building,
because that’s the foundation of a team
– to push together and everyone wants to
achieve something for the person sitting
next to them. So I feel the mood is good
and confident but of course there’s also
a certain amount of stress linked to that,
because of what it means for everyone at
the club and the fans.
You played under Marti Cifuentes at your
previous club Aalborg. What did you learn
about Marti as a coach that made you want
to rejoin him here at QPR?
First of all is the way he sets a structure
for a club and a team, doing things in a
certain way and wanting to bring out the
players’ best abilities – he figures out a
way to make sure everyone reaches their
highest level. Marti’s a very modern coach
with a good mix of being really demanding
on the pitch and then off the pitch,
switching to stuff that I’d call the human
approach and having a conversation with
you about whatever. I think you have to
switch between being very serious and very
structured on the football aspects and also
having another side to what you do.
Your agent Mikkel Beck played for QPR
– did that connection also influence your
move to the club?
Definitely, Mikkel was really enthusiastic
about it when we felt we were getting
closer to a move. He had a very good
16 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC
hoops
period of time here, he was very happy
with the club, the stadium and the fans –
and all of this I can also confirm! There’s
the atmosphere, the whole feeling around
football that it’s a lifestyle over here –
not just something you go to watch because
you want a little Saturday or Sunday
entertainment. Not that it isn’t like that
in other countries I’ve played in, but I just
feel it’s really deep in a family’s core that
they are QPR supporters and they have
been for many years. That’s what I really
like about QPR and it’s also what Mikkel
told me, that this is an amazing place and
you’ll have that feeling in the stadium that
it really means everything, every time you
step onto the pitch.
Were you always interested in
experiencing English football at some
stage in your career?
Yes, it’s always been a dream to experience
it – and if you ask anyone who knows
me, they would say that too. The outside
opinion on English leagues is that they’re
very tough, competitive and maybe the
way it was 20 years ago when there was
another type of football, people would
have said ‘it’s not for you’. But I always
dreamed about it and I just wanted it to
happen – no matter what it took, I would
do everything to come here. Now that I’m
here, it feels amazing to be able to make
that move at my age, to compete and be
in a good team at a historical club.
What more do you want? Also at the point
where I was in my career, things were a
little bit stuck, so I’m really grateful to get
this opportunity.
You set up a goal for Michael Frey on
your QPR debut against Norwich, did that
help you to settle more quickly into a new
environment?
When you enter a new group, it’s always
nice to show everyone around the club and
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
17
hoops
the fans what you’re capable of, that you
want to contribute and you’re here to bring
something. For me, it’s always been a big
part of my game to score goals and get
assists, game-deciding stuff – that’s the
kind of player I want to be. So of course it
helps a lot when you have a good start and
it also boosts your confidence and brings in
a good vibe for your team-mates.
Today’s opponents, Preston North End,
include two Danish players in Mads Frokjaer
and Emil Riis. What do you know about
them?
Well, they’re both good players. Frokjaer
is very technical with a good drive, he’s in
a category that’s quite similar to my way
of playing and he’s had a good start at
Preston, from what I’ve heard. Riis is like
a pure striker with a good shot, quite fast
and he’s also been doing well. I think it also
shows the Danish league is at quite a good
level and it’s always exciting to see how
fellow countrymen are doing, to cross paths
with them and see who wins the battle – so
I’m looking forward to it.
So far, you’ve come close to scoring quite a
few times – would it be a dream scenario for
your first QPR goal to be the one that keeps
the club in the Championship?
That would be the most epic dream, I think!
That’s what I want to do, deciding games for
the team and I feel I’ve been moving closer
to getting that goal, hitting the crossbar
twice and having a couple of other chances
I could have put in. So I think we’re closing
in on that goal and I can’t think of a better
moment than just to put one in today at a
full Loftus Road – that would be amazing.
ALEX BULLAMORE
‘R’ GENERATION WRITER ALEX BULLAMORE
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS-ON IN W12
Many a football fan will tell
you that it’s incredibly difficult
to support their team.
I will usually ignore the
bleating from the big
six who don’t get what
they want, while their
team reached the semifinal
or final of another
competition, devaluing
competitions as they
go because it isn’t the
Champions League. I look
at what we’ve experienced
in the last few weeks, and
yeah guess what, it ain’t
easy being QPR.
Not sure if anyone else
can relate to this, but I’ve
had friends, colleagues
and family members say
variations of ‘you guys are
safe now’. Anyone who’s
ever watched QPR, or has a
general awareness of what
this club does, will know it’s
not as simple as some may
suggest. If I have to say “I
think one more win might do
it, but I’m still nervous” one
more time, I might scream.
You see, supporting a team
like QPR is the ultimate
love-hate relationship. At
the start of the season, I was
looking for any excuse to not
go to games. The prospect
of a win very unlikely, losses
almost guaranteed. That’s
where you might hate the
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
fact you support this team.
But then you get moments
like Jimmy Dunne’s goal, and
all of a sudden everything
seems that little bit better.
The team we played that
day, Birmingham, were
quite awful. I remember
thinking: if we don’t beat
this lot then we probably
deserve relegation. The
goal in itself is beautiful,
but then you start adding
layers of context on top
and it becomes all the more
remarkable.
A player who had struggled
this season with form,
converted to right-back
from centre-back and then
relishing the opportunity to
become the best rightback
possibly the world has
seen (slight exaggeration
there). Football is such a
simple game – why didn’t
anyone else think to convert
their centre-back into a
marauding right-back, who
can smash the ball into the
back of the net, from the
edge of the box, on the
volley and on his weaker
foot? If we stay up, we
stay up because of that
goal – it’s more than good
enough in its own right to be
remembered as such.
We now face three teams
with varying degrees of
ambition left for their
season, Preston have
an outside chance of
the play-offs, Coventry
the opportunity to make
numerous trips to Wembley
and then there’s Leeds. One
of the sides competing for
automatic promotion and
the title, and yet seemingly
they don’t fancy winning
the division or reaching the
Premier League. It feels
like all of those teams are
politely saying to the others
‘no, after you, please’ in
the revolving door that is
the top three. Home form
will be crucial to sealing our
Championship status, and
I think both are winnable,
especially Leeds with their
cold form at the moment.
All I want is nothing to be
riding on that game against
Coventry, because then I’m
not confident at all.
TONY INCENZO
TWITTER
NIGHTMARES!
Some of the most
disappointing matches
I have attended as a
Queens Park Rangers
supporter are coming back
to haunt me on Twitter, or
X, many years later.
I was there at Wembley
Stadium when we were
firm favourites, yet lost
3-0 to Oxford United in the
1986 Milk Cup final. Man of
the match for Oxford and
scorer of their second goal
that day was Ray Houghton.
Meanwhile, the referee
was Keith Hackett – and
nowadays both Houghton
and Hackett are among my
Twitter followers.
Another devastating
result was our 1-0 play-off
final defeat against Cardiff
City at the Millennium
Stadium in 2003. Andy
Campbell lobbed the
Bluebirds’ decisive goal
in extra time and yes, you
guessed it – Campbell
follows me on Twitter.
In my opinion, QPR hit rock
bottom in losing at home to
non-league minnows Vauxhall
Motors in the FA Cup first
round replay in 2002. That
result still makes me shudder
– especially when I see
Vauxhall Motors as one of my
Twitter followers.
At least I am spared
the indignity of being
followed by Partizan
Belgrade. My trip there for
the UEFA Cup tie in 1984 was
my all-time worst Rangers
supporting experience.
Things turned very nasty
indeed amidst the most
hostile football atmosphere I
have ever encountered.
To compound matters,
Rangers led 6-2 from the
first leg in London but lost
that return game 4-0 – so
a 6-6 aggregate where we
were knocked out of Europe
on the away goals rule.
I might just block Partizan
Belgrade on Twitter to
make sure they never come
after me…
ANDY
SINTON
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
elcome back to MATRADE Loftus
Road for today’s Championship
W game against Preston North End.
Preston have had another good season,
but following their midweek defeat at
Southampton it looks like they will miss out on
getting into the play-off positions. However,
I am sure they will want to make a strong
finish to the season and end as high as
they can in the table and, as always, they
will prove really tough opponents for us to
overcome this afternoon.
Since my last notes we have not had the results
we wanted in those three games. The Sheffield
Wednesday game was one where we never
really got going and fell way short of the levels
of performance the team have been showing
in previous games. We then headed down to
Plymouth for what we all knew would be a vital
game for both teams. I thought we bounced
back with a good performance where, for the
vast majority of the game, we were the better
side and in control. We created chances and
opportunities to win it comfortably but, having
gone ahead through a close-range effort from
Sam Field, we failed to deal with a corner well
enough and unfortunately were pegged back
late in the game. I think everyone connected to
QPR left feeling we had let two vital points slip
from our grasp. Still, as I know from my own
experiences in the game over many years, this
happens – you have to put the disappointment
behind you and move on quickly.
Last weekend we travelled to Hull, who I think
are a very good side and play in a really good
way. They have talented individual players
who can cause you problems and that proved
to be the case. We went behind early in the
game from a tremendous long-range strike
and they scored a well-worked second goal
just before the half-hour mark to increase
their lead. We had a great chance just after
half-time, which possibly could have changed
the flow of the game before we fell further
behind to another excellent strike a couple
of minutes later. So we left Hull well beaten
and knowing that we still have work to do
in the remaining three games to secure our
Championship status.
That leads us onto today’s game which is
hugely important, as we all know. With it being
a late kick-off, we will start the game knowing
the results of many of the teams around us
in the table. While we will all be aware of
what has happened, we cannot control or
influence that in any shape or form. What
we can control and influence is ourselves
and that must be the focus of everyone
involved – only what we do matters. There
will be apprehension and nerves around the
stadium, which is understandable, but we have
to accept and manage that and embrace the
challenge in front of us this evening. I know
Marti, his staff and all the squad will be well
prepared and ready for this.
Two weeks ago, it was great to once again
take part in the Tiger Feet 14 walk from our
training ground to the stadium to raise
money for our QPR Down’s Syndrome team.
As always, the event was a great success
and I thank everyone who participated by
doing the walk and everyone who very kindly
hoops
donated to such a wonderful cause. That
support and generosity is hugely appreciated
and really makes a big difference to all
involved with the Tiger Cubs.
On a sad note, we were deeply saddened to
hear of the sad passing of Tom Hyett at the
age of 88. Tom was a steward and friendly
face for more than 58 years and the club’s
longest serving member of staff. He fulfilled
many roles as a steward at the club in that
time and was honoured in 2020 when he won
the Unsung Hero award. Our thoughts and
condolences are with all Tom’s friends and
family and may he rest in peace.
As a club, we were also deeply saddened
to hear of the passing of PC John Gerard
recently following a battle with illness. John
was a recognisable figure with the R’s fans
for a number of years and was part of the
Metropolitan Police unit that travelled up
and down the country with the travelling
supporters. He was hugely respected by
everyone who met him and, with his kind and
approachable nature, he made sure trips
away were organised and safe. Everyone
at QPR would like to pass on our heartfelt
condolences to John’s family and friends and
may he rest in peace.
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
A minute’s applause for both Tom and John will
be held before the game where, as a club, we
recognise the contribution both made to QPR.
Once again, can I thank every single QPR fan
for the incredible support you have given the
team throughout the season both home and
away. That incredible support has played a
huge part in helping us get to a position in
the table where, with three games left of the
season, our destiny in terms of Championship
survival is in our own hands.
A few months ago and from where we were
then, I believe we all would have taken that
and, having worked so hard on and off the
pitch to put ourselves in this position – we
have to finish the job!!!
Again, I urge you to get behind the team from
the first whistle to the last and push them all
the way. Let’s create a great atmosphere
inside the stadium that can help Marti, his
staff and all the team get the three points we
need this evening
So – be loud and be proud of who we are –
We are QPR.
Enjoy the game and COME ON YOU R’S
INTRODUCING PRESTON NORTH END:
THE LILYWHITES
HAVING EPITOMISED MID-TABLE CONSISTENCY FOR THE BEST PART
OF A DECADE, PRESTON LOOK ON COURSE FOR AT LEAST A TOP 10
FINISH, EVEN IF THE PLAY-OFFS MAY NOW BE OUT OF REACH.
The Lilywhites have ended each season
somewhere between seventh and 14th since
they returned to the Championship in 2015,
but a blistering start to the current campaign
hinted they could certainly aim higher.
Ryan Lowe’s side reeled off six straight
victories in August and September to head
the table, but a 4-0 defeat to West Brom
at Deepdale ended their unbeaten start in
severe fashion and they failed to win any of
the five games that followed.
Since then, consistency has eluded North End
– with Christmas approaching, they suffered
another two four-goal losses against
Middlesbrough and Watford but then saw off
Leeds 2-1 at Deepdale on Boxing Day.
Preston appeared to be firmly back on
track during February, stringing together
consecutive victories over Ipswich, Cardiff
and Middlesbrough and ending the month
with a 3-0 triumph at Coventry that put them
on the brink of the top six again.
More recently, though, they slipped up
against Stoke and Birmingham and a
comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Southampton
on Tuesday means the Lilywhites head to
W12 with only a razor-thin mathematical
chance of making the top six.
THE
GAFFER
Having won successive
promotions from League
Two with Bury and Plymouth,
Ryan Lowe was Preston’s top
choice to take over at Deepdale
midway through the 2021/22
season.
The Merseysider made his
name as a lower division striker
during an 18-year playing
career that took in three
spells at Bury and two each
at Chester and Crewe, as well
as representing Shrewsbury,
Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons
and Tranmere.
Lowe became Bury playercoach
in January 2017 and,
following two separate stints as
the club’s caretaker boss, he was
appointed permanent manager
18 months later – leading the
Shakers to the runners-up spot
in his first season.
However, the club’s deepening
financial troubles meant
Lowe was back in League Two
the following season after
accepting an offer to take
charge of relegated Plymouth,
where he immediately repeated
his promotion achievement.
Having consolidated in League
One the following season, the
Pilgrims’ 17-match unbeaten
run propelled them to the top
of the table in the autumn
of 2021, persuading Preston
to move for Lowe as Frankie
McEvoy’s replacement.
RYAN LOWE
QUEENS PARK RANGERS 4
PRESTON NORTH END 0
SATURDAY 17TH OCTOBER 2009
COCA-COLA CHAMPIONSHIP
A wonder goal by Moroccan star Adel
Taarabt set QPR on their way to a dominant
demolition job against Preston.
Taarabt made his dramatic impact after 11
minutes as he picked up possession on the
halfway line, swivelled his hips past a host of
despairing defenders and then sent a stunning
shot into the top corner from 25 yards.
The other marksmen for Jim Magilton’s side
were Akos Buzsaky (62 minutes, penalty), Jay
Simpson (74) and Wayne Routledge (85).
In a match report in The Sun newspaper, Vikki
Orvice wrote: “Adel Taarabt’s idol as a kid
growing up in Marseille was Eric Cantona.
“So when the midfielder unleashed a 25-yard
volley past (goalkeeper) Andy Lonergan to
open the scoring for Rangers, all he needed
was to pull up his collar to roll back the years.”
The MailOnline match report read: “Rodney
Marsh was at Loftus Road to witness an Adel
Taarabt goal he would have been more than
happy to call his own. It was a virtuoso effort
that had Rangers celebrating what was to be
the start of a rout.
“For those Rangers fans who have a long
association with the west London outpost, it
would have brought back memories of the good
old days of Marsh, Bowles, Francis and co.
“…Taarabt’s 11th minute strike was exceptional
and confirmation of why Tottenham worked
so hard to sign him from his French club Lens
and why Rangers were desperate to take him
on loan. The North African is not a prolific
scorer but when they are as well executed as
this then they are worth the wait.
“There was hardly a hint of danger when
he chested the ball a step or two inside the
Preston half. From then on, the movement
developed a pace of its own as he first
swept past Richard Chaplow then cheekily
nutmegged Veliche Shumulikoski.
“He was still some way out but Preston failed
to respond well enough to his run and meekly
allowed him to continue and then power a
shot from 20 yards which left Andy Lonergan
unable to do anything other than watch it
flash past.”
RANGERS: Cerny, Ramage, Stewart, Gorkss,
Borrowdale, Routledge (Ainsworth 87),
Buzsaky (Agyemang 76), Mahon, Faurlin,
Taarabt, Simpson (Vine 77). Subs not used:
Heaton, Hall, Alberti, Harris.
PLASTIC
FANTASTIC
There was incredible media
interest when Loftus Road
became the first league
ground in the world to stage
football on plastic grass, with
Luton Town the visitors on
Tuesday 1st September 1981.
Midfielder Andy King gave
QPR the lead with a closerange
strike at the School
End after 35 minutes. But
back came Luton in the
second half, winning 2-1 with
goals from Mark Aizlewood
and outstanding man of the
match Ricky Hill.
Terry Venables, the Rangers
manager at the time, later
recalled: “My chairman Jim
Gregory had always been
worried about the terrible
problems we had with the
pitch. We couldn’t get the
drainage right. Even on
a fairly nice day, it would
always be like a quagmire.
“Jim just didn’t know what to
do – whatever he spent, he
couldn’t seem to solve the
problem. So he said to me:
‘What about a plastic pitch?’
We chatted for a while and
he said: ‘There are no rules to
say we can’t!’
“So I said: ‘Come on then
– we’ll do it!’ And we went
for it.”
Other Football League clubs
who laid similar artificial
surfaces during the 1980s
were Luton (obviously
impressed by the inaugural
match!), Oldham Athletic and
Preston North End.
But as time progressed,
journalists and opposing
clubs moaned about the
excessive bounce of the ball
and difficulties in making
Marcus, our promotion to
the Championship 20
years ago was a great time
for the club…
It was a really good time
for the club. All I remember
was that QPR had suffered
financial problems and lots
going on off the pitch in
the years before that, but I
think it brought us together
on the pitch. As a club,
everyone was really behind
the boys, so it was a great
promotion-winning season
for all involved.
Having come up through the
youth ranks, you knew Queens
Park Rangers inside out…
I first joined Rangers at
the age of 10 so it was a
big part of mine and my
family’s lives all the way
through. Obviously I had
seen some great players
appear for the R’s, then it
was a privilege when I finally
made my debut and winning
promotion in 2003/04 was
very special.
We had lost the play-off
final 1-0 against Cardiff City
the previous season – so did
that defeat make everyone
at QPR more determined to
gain automatic promotion in
2003/04?
It did, I think. The manner
of that defeat against
Cardiff really hurt us so,
the following year, we were
determined to go one better.
We were also used to the
challenge and the pressures
of being at the top. That
definitely aided us in our
promotion bid.
There were a couple of
additions to our squad
in Martin Rowlands and
Gareth Ainsworth, what did
they add to everything?
‘Rowly’ and ‘Gaz’ were very
different players but both
really effective. Rowly was
one of the most technically
gifted footballers I ever
played alongside. His ball
striking with both feet was
so clean. On top of that, his
aggression and willingness
to fight for the cause gave
everyone a lift immediately.
As soon as Rowly went on
the pitch, we knew we had
found ourselves a top quality
hoops
team-mate. Meanwhile,
Gaz’s general enthusiasm
and the way he was around
the changing-room boosted
morale and some of the
goals he scored were
outrageous. When you get
someone who can produce
something out of nothing, it
is a great addition. So those
two were key players for us.
You were only 19-20 in
that promotion-winning
campaign, but you played 31
league games which was a
decent tally for a young lad…
It was – and I’ll be honest,
when I went into that season
I probably wasn’t expecting
to play so many matches. So
credit to the manager Ian
Holloway for giving me that
opportunity and sticking with
me ahead of some senior
lads at times. In terms of
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
hoops
what I brought to the team, I
was the youngest player with
my youthful enthusiasm and
energy to get around the
pitch to supplement some of
the more experienced boys.
You scored one goal that
season, away to Wrexham
as part of a 2-0 win in
September. Do you recall
that strike?
I do remember it. Someone
played a slick ball into the
box and I think ‘Furs’ (Paul
Furlong) was involved. He
couldn’t quite get hold of
it and it broke to me as I
arrived fairly late. I just
managed to feed my shot
past the keeper. I celebrated
excitedly like a Jack-in-thebox
as I didn’t score many
but the boys got around me
and held me down! It was a
good away performance,
that one.
42 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC
hoops
Did it help that there were
a couple of lifelong QPR
supporters in Marc Bircham
and Kevin Gallen actually
playing for our team?
Yeah – ‘Tweedledum and
Tweedledee’ as I call
them, because they were
as thick as thieves! It did
help because QPR meant
everything to those guys.
They set the standards
for what was expected as
the bare minimum for the
fans. Supporters expect the
players to work hard and
run hard. ‘Birch’ and Kev
wouldn’t let anyone come in
and not do that, they were
quick to tell you if you didn’t
do the basics.
We sealed promotion on
the final day by winning 3-1
at Sheffield Wednesday.
Some 7,200 jubilant R’s
fans packed out the away
end and it was a wonderful
occasion…
I wasn’t involved towards
the end of the season and
I was disappointed, but I
believe the gaffer just went
for more experience really. I
was young and these things
happen so you just have to
get on with it, although it’s
not as if I didn’t play my part
that year. Anyway, I recall I
was at Hillsborough for the
big fixture. I travelled with
the squad and I went to sit
among the QPR supporters
to cheer the boys on, so
I was in the middle of the
celebrations! It was a great
day that I’ll never forget.
Any time you achieve
anything with a good group
of lads is always special and
it was amazing for the loyal
R’s fans after some tough
times.
A few days later, there was
an open top bus parade
leading to a civic reception
at the town hall. Again,
thousands of Rangers fans
were present…
It was a great night, fair
play to the club and the
local council for arranging
that event. All the players
felt a sense of gratitude to
thousands of fans who lined
the streets.
What was our manager Ian
Holloway like to play under?
‘Ollie’ is a man where what
you see is what you get.
Every day was different,
there was never a dull
moment at the training
ground. It was impossible
not to reciprocate his
enthusiasm and energy – he
would drag you up when
you were down. His main
attribute was his manmanagement
and his ability
to motivate players. He had
some philosophical stories
too, so he made me think not
just about football but about
life and the importance of
being a good person by
treating others with respect.
‘…I was surprised by the low crowd
it’s the end of the season, and there
wasn’t a great deal on the game, but
the support for both teams in our
good. Maybe the all-ticket situation and
having three home games on the trot
had something to do with it. Certainly if
the West Ham and Arsenal games were
played when they were scheduled then
we’d have had full houses.
BOSSING IT
IN ALL, A TOTAL OF 46 MEN HAVE OCCUPIED THE
QUEENS PARK RANGERS DUGOUT ON A PERMANENT BASIS
DURING THE CLUB’S HISTORY. WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT
SOME OF THE BEST-KNOWN – AND SOME OF THE LESSER-
KNOWN – INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE HELD THE TITLE OF QPR
MANAGER OVER THE YEARS…
GARETH AINSWORTH
(2023)
Former QPR winger Gareth
Ainsworth returned to the
club as boss for an eightmonth
period last year
following the departure of
Neil Critchley.
Ainsworth was born on 10th
May 1973 in Blackburn. As
well as Rangers, his playing
career also took in spells at
Northwich Victoria, Preston
North End, Cambridge
United, Lincoln City, Port
Vale, Wimbledon, Walsall,
Cardiff City and Wycombe
Wanderers. He has also
featured in a rock band as
lead singer.
Signing for the R’s on a free
transfer from Cardiff in July
2003, he went on to make
152 appearances in a hooped
shirt – scoring 21 goals – and
was installed as player-coach
in May 2008, prior to a
couple of caretaker manager
stints at the club.
Ainsworth moved to Wycombe
as a player in February 2010
following a successful loan
and became the Chairboys’
caretaker boss in September
2012 prior to being named
as their permanent playermanager
two months later.
After retiring from
professional football at the
end of the 2012/13 season,
Ainsworth continued as
Wycombe boss until 21st
February 2023 when he was
appointed QPR’s head coach.
He said at the time: “Queens
Park Rangers is the club
where I was most known for
playing and you get moments
in your career that resonate
with you forever. I loved
my time here as a player
and hopefully I can go on
and love my time here as a
manager as well.
“This is going to be a real
challenge because the club is
so special to me and so huge
as well. I want to get Loftus
Road absolutely rocking again.”
However, Ainsworth was
relieved of his position on
28th October last year after
a disappointing run.
MARTI CIFUENTES
(2023-)
Two days after Ainsworth’s
departure from the club,
QPR named Marti Cifuentes
as the club’s new head coach.
Cifuentes was born on 7th July
1982 in Catalonia, Spain. As
well as coaching in the youth
set-ups at Ajax and Millwall,
he has spent more than a
decade working at firstteam
level in Spain, Norway,
Denmark and Sweden.
As coach of Swedish club
Hammarby, he led them
to third and seventh-place
finish before departing to
take charge at QPR.
On his arrival in W12,
Cifuentes said: “This is a
fantastic historical club. We
need to keep it alive. We
need to be angry when we
lose, very happy when we win
– I love that passion.
“It is about the identity. We
are going to try to regain
the ball quick, we are going
to use the ball to move
the opponent, not just to
look fancy in possession
or pretend having the ball
around our centre-backs will
make us a better team.”
How did you get scouted?
I got scouted through (former technical
director) Chris Ramsey, and ever since
then it’s been QPR.
Why football?
Winning.
What are your strengths as a player?
Definitely running with the ball and 1v1
attacking. I’d say my shooting and
passing as well.
What do you need to work on to get better?
My weaknesses are probably my
positioning – playing across the front line
and in midfield means sometimes I can
get caught out.
Do you have any superstitions before a
game?
I don’t have any specific superstitions
before a match. I just always make sure
that I pray, think about God and be the best
that I can be.
What professional player can you see
elements of yourself in?
It depends what position! I would go for
either Paul Pogba or Bukayo Saka.
What is the highlight of your career so far?
Scoring three in my district final was a very
good day for me.
Where do you see yourself in five
years’ time?
Hopefully in the first team at QPR!
If you could play at one stadium, what
would it be?
Emirates Stadium.
Who has had the greatest influence on your
career so far?
My uncle. Everything I know about football
to this point is because of him.
If you could go on holiday anywhere in the
world, where would you go?
The USA.
Have you got any hidden talents?
Yes, I can play the trumpet!
TRUST’S WALKING
FOOTBALL
PROGRAMME
Uxbridge Amblers, now
approaching their 10th
anniversary, have been a
QPR partner since 2015
and are the first Walking
Football club to attain FA
accredited status.
Key benefits for the Amblers
players are physical exercise,
mental health well-being and
social interaction with new
and old friends, on and off
the pitch.
They also play friendlies
against other teams on
Saturdays at Powerleague
Shepherd’s Bush before
heading down to MATRADE
Loftus Road to watch QPR.
Uxbridge Amblers sessions –
all of which take place on the
3G pitch at Hillingdon Sports
and Leisure Centre, Gatting
Way, UB8 1ES unless stated
otherwise – are as follows:
Men’s over-50s
Wednesdays (10.45am-12pm),
Fridays (6.45pm-8pm).
These sessions are geared
towards competitive Walking
Football, with a focus on
participants returning
or continuing to play the
beautiful game, albeit in a
new and exciting format. We
also have a full social diary
for everyone. First session is
a free taster session.
Community Walking Football
We offer free Community
Walking Football sessions
for all abilities, encouraging
participants to get back to
exercise and enjoy the social
benefits of the game.
Men’s over-40s
Wednesdays (10am-11am)
Women’s over-35s
AIDAN MAGEE
JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER
AIDAN MAGEE PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN
The end of another
challenging season is
almost upon us.
And unlike in many of the
most recent years, there
is still so much to play
for. I can’t recall another
campaign where the
situation at the bottom of
the Championship is as tight
as now.
From where we were last
autumn, and even for a spell
after the turn of the year –
we’ve fought our way back
into survival contention. Even
allowing for a couple of poor
results against Sheffield
Wednesday and at Hull, our
destiny is in our hands.
I regret falling asleep 20
minutes into our defeat at
Hull. Whenever I’ve done
this in the past, I’ve always
woken up after full-time with
the team having lost!
Another regret is that Marti
Cifuentes didn’t get hold of
this squad earlier than he
did. Our form since he took
over would have had QPR in
the top half of the table.
Nonetheless, there is
work to be done – and that
starts today in a fixture that
has caused us problems
since we came down from
the Premier League.
My belief is that one more
win might be enough to
keep us up. We are helped
by the fact that a number of
teams below us have to play
each other.
You will notice some
cartoon pictures which
were drawn by QPR fan
Stephen Matika way back in
the summer of 1997, when
optimism was high ahead of
the ensuing campaign under
big-spending Stewart Houston
and his assistant Bruce Rioch.
Stephen posted it on
Facebook last week,
saying that he sent it to the
matchday programme 27
years ago – only for it not
to be published. I’m happy
to right that wrong all these
years later.
It’s my last column of
2023/24. I hope to see
you all in the remaining
three games.
If not – please enjoy your
summer.
