FAVOURITE SNAPS FROM
THE PAST FEW WEEKS...
has been full of ups and downs, though their second tier status remains
in their own hands as the season enters its final three matches.
The Devon side recorded a
crucial 1-0 victory over promotion
hopefuls Leicester City last time
out, a result that saw the Pilgrims
rise to 18th in the table and four
points clear of the bottom three.
Neil Dewsnip’s side are unbeaten
since Argyle’s Director of
Football stepped into the dugout
following Ian Foster’s dismissal,
with single goal victories coming
against Rotherham United and
the Foxes, as well as a point
against QPR on home turf.
After claiming the League
One title in May, Plymouth
started the new campaign with
Potters Head Coach Steven
Schumacher in charge at Home
Park prior to the 39-year-old’s
switch to the bet365 Stadium in
late December.
Following an initial spell
in temporary charge for Dewsnip,
Foster replaced Schumacher
at the helm and the former
England U20s boss claimed
seven points from his first three
games in charge.
However, following a run of one
win in 12, including five home
games without a goal, Foster
departed the Devon coast with
Dewsnip stepping back into the
role on an interim basis until the
end of the season.
This season’s previous meeting
between this afternoon’s sides
resulted in three points for the
Pilgrims. Adam Randell’s lastminute
strike secured the victory
for Argyle after Tyrese Campbell’s
opener was cancelled out by
Mustapha Bundu.
t’s been another positive week at
Clayton Wood for the team following on from
last weekend’s victory over second-place
Burnley at Emerys Stadium, a result that keeps
us on target for a top four finish come the end of
the campaign.
We have seen some real consistency in the
second half of the season and the results have
been nothing more than we have deserved.
But to achieve our target would be a huge plus
for us as a club.
Of course we still have fixtures to play, and
next up is West Bromwich Albion here at the
bet365 Stadium tomorrow, a result that could
see the gap to Wolves cut to just four points.
We’d love to see as many of you as possible
back in ST4 tomorrow afternoon as myself, the
staff and the team are always very appreciative
of your backing. Entry is free for Season Card
Holders, so please come down and support us
if you can.
A positive end to the season would give
everyone a huge boost heading into next
year when we will look to progress the squad
further and continue the journey we have been
on this season.
Enjoy the game.
Marie
Neil Dewsnip has returned to the dugout for the second time with
Plymouth Argyle this season to oversee the Pilgrims’ final games of
the Championship campaign.
Argyle’s Director of Football, a
former PE teacher in Liverpool,
started his coaching journey
with Everton’s Academy, where
he oversaw the development
of a former pupil from Cardinal
Heenan High School, now
City Head Coach Steven
Schumacher.
Dewsnip worked at Goodison
Park for 17 years prior to
a move to the Football
Association in 2013, where he
supported the development
of the next generation of
international footballers as the
technical lead for the Young
Lions’ U17 and U21s teams.
During Dewsnip’s time at the
FA, he also took charge of the
U18s, coaching the U17s at
the 2015 World Cup as well as
guiding the U20s to the 2017
Toulon Tournament.
Official Women’s Team Partner
In August 2019, the now
62-year-old reunited with
Schumacher and then
Argyle Head Coach Ryan
Lowe, working as a technical
consultant at Home Park
before moving to the role of
Director of Football just over a
year later.
Following Schumacher’s move
to the bet365 Stadium in
December, the former Young
Lions boss took charge of four
matches - three draws and one
defeat to promotion-chasing
Southampton – prior to the
appointment of Ian Foster as
Head Coach.
After Foster’s departure
earlier this month, Dewsnip
returned to the dugout until
the end of the season, tasked
with retaining Plymouth’s
Championship status.
FROM THE HEAD COACH
steven schumacher
Good afternoon and welcome back to the bet365 Stadium for this
afternoon’s match against Plymouth Argyle.
We attack our penultimate home fixture
of the campaign on the back of a hardfought
draw at Sheffield Wednesday
last weekend.
At this stage of the Championship
season, each point is priceless and I
was really pleased with the character
the players showed to take something
from the match.
Clearly, we wanted to take more
control of the game than we did and
there were periods where our goal was
under real pressure.
But the players didn’t buckle and
for the third time in four matches
displayed resilience to come back and
get a result having been behind.
We showed more attacking quality
in the second half too, especially the
move for Luke Cundle’s equaliser,
when he was calm and composed
to set himself and finish following
Bae Junho’s dummy and Tyrese
Campbell’s assist.
I was really pleased for Luke to come
off the bench and score a big goal.
He deserved it for the enthusiasm
and positive attitude he has shown
throughout his time here, when he
perhaps hasn’t always had the game
time he would have liked.
All of our substitutes made an impact
and we were unfortunate not to score a
winner as that little bit of luck evaded
us when Junho’s goal-bound finish
struck Luke and deflected wide in front
of nearly 4,000 away supporters.
The support, as ever, was outstanding.
You sensed when the players needed
you and got louder when Wednesday
scored, which definitely played its part
in helping us get the result.
Today we host Plymouth Argyle at the
bet365 Stadium and I would like to
extend a warm welcome to Neil Dewsnip,
Kevin Nancekivell and the players, staff
and supporters who have made the
journey up to Stoke from Devon.
I have fond memories of the success we
enjoyed during our four-and-a-half years
in Plymouth and will be forever grateful
to Simon Hallett for trusting me with my
first role in management at Home Park.
I knew the challenge I was coming
into at Stoke City wouldn’t be easy
and that’s proved to be the case, but
it’s something I’m enjoying and I’m
massively motivated to succeed here.
We are in the infancy of this new
journey and the support you have given
during the past four months adds to our
determination to bring the success you
deserve back to the bet365 Stadium.
Our immediate focus is ensuring
that we get the results we need to
retain our Championship status. This
afternoon’s game gives us a huge
opportunity to make a significant step
in that regard.
It is a massive match for both teams and
I’m sure there will be no quarter asked
or given in pursuit of the three points.
Enjoy the game.
WITH SOHAIL SAHI
8
What a celebration that
was… the supporters in the
lower tier of the Leppings
Lane end celebrated Luke
Cundle’s first goal for Stoke
City alongside him with such
unrivalled joy; it was great to
commentate and witness it,
at the same time.
I have to say it was a top-class
finish from the young man,
and Luke was the first to
admit to me after the game
that he’s had a rocky period
at Stoke since his arrival in
January but over the next
few weeks hopefully he can
contribute some more.
Credit to him though for
sticking at it and displaying
his talent with that classy
goal and then running
over to the Stoke fans to
celebrate.
It’s great to see young
people in any walk of life
fulfil their potential and
in the harsh glare of the
football world even more so.
Onto this afternoon’s meeting
with Plymouth Argyle and
without going into the back
story which we are all well
aware of, it’s a crucial three
points at stake for both sides.
It’s bound to be tight and
tense and I’m sure with a few
nail-biting moments along
the way. What it won’t lack is
drama and watching Stoke
throughout this season has
certainly been dramatic.
A few shout outs before
I sign off; a hello to John
Acres who is here today
working for BBC national
radio and his son Evan who is
a Stoke supporter and it’s his
birthday.
Evan has travelled to the
match today with his pops
John, and Evan recently won
basketball player of the year
award for his age group in
Plymouth.
And I would like to wish a
happy birthday to Melissa
Matthews who amongst many
others does a sterling job
on matchdays as part of the
matchday media team at the
football club.
I hope you have a lovely day
and year ahead Melissa and
fingers crossed Stoke start
your birthday off with three
points.
WITH THE SENTINEL’S PETE SMITH
t is 31 years ago this month that Stoke City hosted Plymouth
I Argyle in their third from last game of the season, their
penultimate home match.
The campaign wouldn’t
have been over if they
didn’t win but one more win
was what they needed and
everyone just wanted to get
the job done.
It was the end of 1992/93 and
Stoke had been steamrolling
their way towards the Division
Two title, a drive built on a
25-match unbeaten run with
hard-working heroes showing
their quality like Mark Stein,
Ian Cranson and Nigel
Gleghorn. It was the latter
who would play a decisive
role in the final chapter.
Gleghorn had started his
adult life as a firefighter,
playing for his local club
Seaham Red Star in the
Northern League Division
Two. It took a successful trial
at Ipswich Town for him to
reluctantly leave the fire and
rescue service - making his
First Division debut within
weeks, at the age of 23
against Arsenal.
He went on to help Manchester
City win promotion then
moved to Birmingham City,
where he won the Associate
Members’ Cup under Lou
Macari then spearheaded
their promotion the following
season with 22 goals.
He was lured for a Macari
reunion in Stoke in October
1992 as Birmingham were on
the brink of collapse off the
field. He made his debut in a
2-1 Potteries derby win at the
Victoria Ground and played
a key role in a drive towards
promotion.
By April 28 when Plymouth
visited the Vic, Stoke needed
two more points to clinch
top spot.
It was a dramatic start but
from Vince Overson’s big
clearance forward, they took
the lead. Graham Shaw went
on a run down the right and
his cross found its way to
Gleghorn to smash the ball
past Peter Shilton. A nervous
86 minutes later, Stoke were
champions.
Gleghorn later said: “I must
have just had the happy
knack of being in the right
place at the right time and,
without wanting to blow
my own trumpet, one of my
qualities was being a pretty
good finisher.
“Lou used to say that people
can stop you playing, but
they can’t stop you running.
He got us fit and then trusted
us to do the job and to make
decisions for yourself. We
had people who could run,
people who could fight and
people who could play.”
Not a bad mix.
Experienced defender
Dan Scarr has chalked
up 28 appearances in all
competitions for Argyle this
season. The Pilgrims have
seven clean sheets when the
29-year-old has appeared
in the heart of the Plymouth
backline, including two of
their last three games. Neil
Dewsnip’s return to the
Scarr’s first minutes on the
pitch since January with the
defender completing the
duration of their last three
Plymouth’s main
source of goals
has enjoyed
an outstanding
campaign in attack
for the Pilgrims
with 20 goals in all
competitions. To
add to his already
impressive numbers,
the 23-year-old has
nine assists in his
47 games in Argyle
colours. The attacker
retaining his place
for the seven fixtures
since and recording
two clean sheets in
that time. Furthermore,
the 24-yer-old has
conceded just six times
in that run of games.
“It was important that we stood up
to their physicality today, we watched
them on Tuesday night and we spoke about
how they changed their style at half-time
and went really direct and the crowd
played a huge part. We were expecting
that and we picked a team to withstand
that, in the first half we came under
intense pressure but thankfully we
stood up to it.” STEVEN SCHUMACHER
Duo complete loan
moves until the end
of the season
Stoke City Under-21s
midfielders Ben Kershaw
and Sonny Singh have both
complete loan moves away
from the bet365 Stadium
for the rest of the campaign.
Kershaw has joined
Newcastle Town on a youth
loan, whilst Singh has
completed a temporary
move to Woking FC.
Kershaw has featured in
nine PL2 matches for City
this campaign, during
which he notched his
first goal of the season in
December’s 3-1 victory
against Nottingham Forest.
The 20-year-old made
his debut during Easter
Monday’s 2-1 defeat to
Leek Town
The switch for Singh is the
20-year-old’s third loan
experience of the season
following previous spells
at Hereford and Rushall
Olympic, both of National
League North.
Singh was an unused
substitute in Monday’s 1-1
draw with Bromley.
Official Women’s Team Partner
the potters
STOKE CiTY
WOMEN
Good afternoon
and welcome back
to the bet365
Stadium for this
afternoon’s match.
t’s been another positive week at
Clayton Wood for the team following on from
I last weekend’s victory over second-place
