Alleged burglar charged with second offence

A 49-YEAR-OLD has now been 

charged with two burglaries in 

the district. 

Daniel Cleveland Mcgill pleaded 

not guilty to two burglary 

charges and weapons charges 

when he appeared in court last 

week. 

It is alleged Mcgill entered 

a Prebbleton home in February 

and a Burnham address 

in March last year. During the 

Burnham incident, the property 

owner said he was pushed over 

when the intruder fled. 

Selwyn Times had reported 

police had been waiting for DNA 

results in relation to the Burnham 

burglary. 

A white Mercedes Sprinter 

campervan was believed to have 

been used in both burglaries. 

Mcgill had already been 

charged with a burglary in 

Trices Rd, Prebbleton, and 

appeared in the district court 

on March 22. In his second 

appearance last week an 

additional charge was laid for the 

Burnham burglary. 

Mcgill was remanded on bail 

until his next court appearance 

on July 15. He is also facing 

charges of three counts of possession 

of offensive weapons, 

namely an axe, BB gun and paring 

knife. 

These were allegedly found in 

his possession in Shand Cres, 

Riccarton, on March 21.

the damaging blaze about 5am 

last Wednesday. 

The fire did not spread into 

the main bar and eating area.

fires occurring from spontaneous 

ignition when fabrics have 

been contaminated with oils or 

grease prior to washing, which 

can be common in commercial 

laundries.

Grigg posted on her Facebook 

page the Government would be 

placing increased scrutiny on 

councils’ consenting process, 

and would look to allow a wider 

range of building supplies that 

can get consent. 

In the post she said: “Councils 

like the Selwyn District Council 

will need to speed up their 

consenting processes. 

“We believe this added 

scrutiny will provide greater 

certainty for the sector by 

encouraging best practice and 

driving innovation that will help 

to reduce delays and let builders 

get on with the job.” 

Lyall rebuffed the comment. 

“I think it’s an unfair call, the 

complexity of what our staff do 

is very high and we have to be 

extremely careful as to what we 

do when we do a consent, after 

all once we issue the consent, the 

council becomes liable. 

“I think it’s a dog whistle 

actually.”

suggestive language in political 

messaging to garner support

respond to Lyall’s comments.

in Selwyn was 11 days and 91 

per cent of consents were being 

processed within the statutory 

requirements of 20 working days. 

Christchurch City Council had 

an average processing 

time of 15 days and 

processed 79.3 per cent 

of all consents within the 

required period, while 

Waimakariri District 

Council had an average 

processing time of 14 

days and processed 97 

per cent of all consents 

within the required 

period.

It is understood the incident 

happened at the low-security 

Rimu unit, which houses 60 men 

with segregation status. 

The prisoner climbed up 

scaffolding currently set up 

around the unit, the NZ Herald 

reported. The entire prison was 

locked down until 5pm and phone 

access was prohibited. 

It is understood prisoners were 

unlocked to get their meals and 

were required to return to their 

cells.

New venue for service to remember 

GROWTH HAS prompted a 

shift in Rolleston’s Anzac Day 

service location away from its 

traditional home. 

The service will be held behind 

Te Ara Ātea, about 300m from 

its old location at the Rolleston 

Memorial Clock. 

It will start at 11am and parade 

attendees need to meet near the 

scout den at 10.15am. 

Rolleston Anzac committee 

chair Greg Knowles said the 

service was outgrowing its old 

venue. 

“Last year’s attendance 

was estimated at just 

under 2000 and the 

service always required 

the closure of the roads 

at the memorial clock 

intersection.” 

Knowles said council 

staff suggested the new 

town centre might be 

suitable location for the 

service, as no roads will 

need to be closed. 

“Despite the growing 

inconvenience, roading 

managers at the Selwyn District 

Council had always been very 

supportive of the Anzac service. 

However, in recent years both 

staff and councillors had politely 

reminded the committee that the 

new town centre plan would one 

day be completed and be a great

venue for future services.” 

The clock tower was a 

millennium project by the 

Rolleston Residents Association 

with support from other 

community groups. The base of 

the tower has memorial plaques 

for past wars. 

“Having some sort of memorial 

at the new venue was vital to 

the local Returned Services 

Association. 

“A temporary structure 

displaying replicas of the 

memorial clock’s plaques will 

be constructed for the 

service. Wreaths and 

poppies laid at the 

temporary memorial 

will be relocated to the 

memorial clock following 

the event,” Knowles said. 

He said the new venue 

also has benefits such as 

raised banking to provide 

better viewing. 

The parade will start 

on the pathway parallel to 

the netball and tennis courts, 

opposite the scout den on 

Christensen Pde and will travel a 

short distance to the location of 

the service.

Departure bittersweet for publicans

MERWYN AND Marie Gilmore 

have owned the Prebbleton 

Tavern since 1970 but now 

veteran publicans have decided 

it’s time to get out of the game, 

and have put it up for sale. 

Along with the tavern on the 

corner of Springs and Toswill 

Rds, a 2044m 2 block of land 

next to the pub is also up for 

sale. A medical centre owned by 

Prebbleton Health is confirmed 

for the land on the Springs Rd 

side of the tavern. 

“Expressions of interest are 

being sought for the remaining 

two lots on the site including the 

tavern,” they said. 

Construction of the medical 

centre is expected to start later 

this year. 

The Gilmores said they feel 

bittersweet about retirement. 

“We feel the timing is right . . .

They originally only planned to 

stay three years.

Son Shannon has been the 

general manager for 25 years 

after he came to help during the 

university holidays, and never left. 

Since 2004, the tavern has 

supported the Prebbleton 

Football Club, which Shannon 

has been the president of since its 

inception. 

The tavern has been operating 

since Edward Prebble built his 

shop on the site in the 1860s, 

and when the liquor part of 

his business became the most 

profitable, he turned it into a 

hotel. Since then it has seen 

various forms with the Gilmores 

adding extensions, including the 

restaurant. 

The pub is up for sale at the 

same time as Lincoln’s Famous 

Grouse Hotel which may be 

changing ownership. The Lincoln 

Club is considering an offer to sell 

the business.

commemorates 

60 years of music 

THE NEW ZEALAND Army Band 

has marked 60 years since the band was 

officially formed. 

To mark the milestone band members 

past and present recently took to the stage 

at the Christchurch Town Hall. 

Burnham-based director of music Major 

Graham Hickman said the show was a 

tremendous success. 

“This was all about honouring our veterans, 

our ‘living heritage’, whose efforts 

over the decades shaped the band into the 

world-class organisation it is today. 

“The current band is very much standing 

on the shoulders of giants, and it was great 

to be able to host so many legends over the 

weekend.” 

A member of the Army Band since 1985, 

and director of music since 2010, Hickman’s 

connection to the band runs deep. 

“There have been Hickmans in New Zealand’s 

military bands for five generations

The band officially marks its formation 

date as April 5, 1964, when they were involved

Artist bringing a dose of realism

HORIZONS CHANGE, though 

the outlook remains the same 

for Sean Fietje, a painter devoted 

to a classical artistic genre. 

In this age of selfies, vlogging, 

Instagram and TikTok, the 

primary school teacher turned 

full-time artist continues to 

study his own interpretation of 

photographic memories. 

Fietje developed a passion for 

portraying landscapes during 

his early 20s and teaching in 

Hanmer Springs provided the 

perfect backdrop. 

Arthur’s Pass then took 

prominence and he soon 

broadened his canvas to 

Queenstown and Wanaka. 

Now 41, the father-of-two 

should soon enjoy greater exposure 

as negotiations are under 

way to hang a print of his most 

time-consuming oil painting, 

the Arthur’s Pass railway station, 

on a wall behind the Tranz 

Alpine check-in at KiwiRail’s 

Addington terminal. 

Fietje applied some finishing 

touches to this 350-hour labour 

of love in the terminal late last 

month, once passengers had set 

off for Greymouth. 

Art on public display outside

development for Fietje, who has 

worked full-time as a realism 

painter since returning home 

from Hong Kong – the second 

of two overseas teaching assignments 

– in 2022. 

“I hope to solidify my place in 

the landscape market,” he said. 

“There’s a lot of abstract artists 

out there and a lot of impressionism. 

Realism has taken a 

back seat to the other ways of 

making art.” 

Fietje’s artistic talent became 

apparent at Middleton Grange 

School, where he spent his primary 

and secondary education. 

“I started winning little 

colouring-in competitions when 

I was six or seven years old. In 

high school I was first in art a 

few years in a row, that was my 

thing, I was the arty kid.” 

In those days he was drawing

cars and animals. Dad had 

10 acres on Jowers Rd, West 

Melton. 

“I lived on a pig farm so I drew 

a lot of pigs, cows . . . our house. 

Anything that was around me, 

nothing really specific,” he said.

Fietje earned his first commission 

in the tourist resort when 

a fellow teacher wanted the 

then-24-year-old to paint a rural 

scene for her husband’s birthday. 

“It was a farm in the Hurunui. 

There were a couple of quad 

bikes, some dogs and a herd of 

sheep overlooking the farm. It 

took me 60 hours for $400, I was 

so rapt just to have a hobby that 

paid for itself,” he said. 

Fietje also leafed through 

the family album, painting 

photographs taken during 

teenage tramping expeditions 

around Arthur’s Pass. 

The stopover en route to and 

from the West Coast is still a 

profitable source of inspiration.

“Once you’re familiar with an 

area and understand the colour 

temperature, and you’re familiar 

with which scenes are quite iconic 

you know what to look for,” he 

explained. 

So Klondyke Corner is a 

standout: “Most people have been 

there, they’ve had to stop the car 

and wait for others to cross the 

Bealey Bridge.” 

Fietje has experienced his own 

go-slow with that crossing point 

over the Waimakariri River on 

State Highway 73, not that he was 

caught in traffic. 

Depicting the single-lane bridge 

has been an ordeal, it took two 

attempts a combined 300 hours of 

trial and error. 

“I painted Bealey Bridge about 

five years ago, I got 

about 80 hours in 

and I had to throw 

it out, I just didn’t 

have the skill level. 

“I couldn’t figure 

it out and I didn’t 

have the time to 

solve the problems 

(he was teaching 

art in South Africa). 

The riverbed, I just 

couldn’t figure it 

out.” 

When he, wife 

Daniella and 

their boys Leo (4-½) and James 

(19 months) settled back in 

Christchurch, Fietje’s perseverance 

demanded a return to Bealey 

Bridge. 

“It wasn’t until 4 o’clock in the 

afternoon there was finally a really 

soft light source and you got all 

the shadows crossing the road. It 

ticked a few of the boxes I look for 

in a painting. 

“I really want people to feel 

they’re literally standing in front 

of that view and looking at that 

scene, really feeling that they’re 

there. 

“The only way you can do that 

is by upping the detail and trying 

to nail the colours as closely as 

possible. 

“There’s something about 

having a photograph enlarged, 

you’ve got all the pixels, but even 

if you’ve got a really, really good 

camera, you can still see it was

“The camera doesn’t necessarily 

pick up all the colours and the 

shadows, all the greens of the 

leaves. It can only do so much. 

“I take a few notes when I’m 

out there, then to turn that scene 

into a painting where you’re using 

literally pure colour from a tube 

and then have that in front of you. 

It’s quite an amazing experience. 

It’s sort of hard to explain really.” 

A picture can be worth a 

thousand words. And several 

thousand dollars. 

His second version of Bealey 

Bridge sold for $22,000 last 

November to a Christchurch 

transport, distribution and storage 

company founder who had 

travelled the route hundreds of 

times.

to produce, the 

troublesome 

riverbed was 

repainted six 

times. 

“I started trying 

to paint every 

individual rock 

and that wasn’t 

working,” Fietje 

admitted. 

“I did the same 

pattern right 

across and then I realised the 

pattern changes between the right 

and left, I figured it out.” 

Fietje, who has never taken 

an art class as a student, is still 

mastering landscapes, though he 

is pleased with his development 

since painting his fellow teacher’s 

farm and equipment. 

“Over years and years of looking 

at landscapes through the lens of 

an artist you start to understand 

how to create certain effects. I 

know how to use tone now, to 

push things in the distance really, 

really far back,” he said. 

“The palette is also very limited 

now, I use five or six colours now, 

it used to be 15. I pretty much only 

use one green.”

Maw was presented with a 

bronze medal for his selfless 

response when realising a car had 

ended up in French Bay, Akaroa, 

shortly after the off-duty officer 

from Rangiora had completed 

the Little River Rail Trail bicycle 

route. 

He was with friends driving 

into the tourist town on October 

18, 2021, 28 years to the day he 

graduated from the Trentham 

Police College, when one of the 

group spotted a car in the water. 

It had rolled down the boat 

ramp and was drifting with the 

tide away from shore. 

“I could see a woman in the 

driver’s seat, but she wasn’t 

responding to anyone on shore,” 

Maw said. 

“The car was filling with water. 

I didn’t stop to think. I just got my 

gear off, chucked my bike shorts 

on and jumped in. 

“You hear people say they 

didn’t really think about it, they 

just acted – that’s a real thing, it’s

exactly what happened,” he said. 

Maw swam about 20 metres to 

the car and discovered the doors 

were locked. 

However, the passenger window 

was down, so he clambered over 

the bonnet as the car was inundated. 

“By the time I got to the passenger 

side, the woman had made 

her way there too and she kind of 

fell into my arms. 

“I flipped her over and paddled 

her back. 

“To be honest, I was a bit 

out of practice. The last time I 

performed a water rescue was 

28 years ago in a pool at Police 

College – there was a moment I 

wondered if I was doing it right,” 

he said. 

Maw’s medal was accompanied 

by a citation which backgrounded 

his life-saving exploits. 

“It was later established the 

incident was a mental health 

crisis for the woman, and Senior 

Constable Maw’s actions saved 

this woman’s life and allowed for 

ongoing mental health assistance 

to be provided.” 

Although there was a successful 

outcome, Maw was left disturbed.

thinking about what

I had a good chat to a mate who 

could talk from experience and he

“I know all my workmates 

would have done the same thing, 

we just play what’s in front of us.”

Foulkes opens bowling on Black Caps debut

DARFIELD’S ZAK Foulkes 

made his Black Caps debut in 

the third T20 against Pakistan in 

Rawalpindi on Monday. 

Foulkes opened the bowling 

finishing wicketless with figures 

of 0/39. 

He had Saim Ayub LBW in his 

second over, but the decision was 

overturned on review due to an 

inside edge. 

Foulkes was down to bat at No 

8 but was not needed. 

Mark Chapman top scored 

with 87 not out to chase down 

Pakistan’s total of 178 with almost 

two overs to spare. Foulkes 

was the second Darfield player 

to play for the Black Caps after 

all-rounder Henry Shipley made 

his debut last year. 

Foulkes comes from a 

family of cricketers. 

His father Glen played for 

Canterbury Country from 2009 

to 2012, while his brothers Liam 

and Robbie currently play for 

Canterbury Country. 

Robbie was also a part of 

the New Zealand team at the 

under-19 cricket World Cup 

earlier this year. 

Foulkes went to St Andrew’s 

College, where he won the 

Gillette Cup one day competition 

with the first XI in 2019.

PREBBLETON ARE gearing 

up for their first foray into 

New Zealand’s oldest football 

competition on Monday. 

The club has entered the 

Chatham Cup, the nationwide 

knockout competition which 

was won last year by Christchurch 

United. 

Prebbleton will be taking 

on Halswell United in the 

preliminary round at Kakaha 

Park on Monday night – most 

likely the toughest opponents 

they could have drawn. 

But while Prebbleton may be 

wearing the club’s green kits, on 

the scorecard they will be High 

School Old Boys. 

President Shannon Gilmore 

said Mainland Football’s policy 

of ‘no new clubs’ has forced 

them to come to an agreement 

with HSOB. Prebbleton players 

register with them and compete 

under their banner, but form 

their own teams and play in 

their own kits. 

Since joining Mainland’s 

competitions more than 10 years 

ago, Prebbleton have played 

under the banners of Hornby 

United and Christchurch United 

and are now with HSOB. 

But the team who takes the 

field on Monday will be wholly 

comprised of Prebbleton players 

– Gilmore said HSOB had no 

players interested in entering.

to have a go next year as well 

and make it a regular fixture for 

the club.” 

Gilmore, who was one of 

the founding members of the 

club 20 years ago, said it was a 

“dream” to be in the Chatham 

Cup.

“We just want to go out there 

and enjoy ourselves.

hammered. If we can reduce 

the damage, we’ll reduce the

Choosing the right pet accessories is

Collars, leads, and harnesses are 

available in various designs, patterns,

Often, collars are the first item pet 

owners buy for their dogs or cats. They

Shot putter targeting Paralympic glory

IT’S A YEAR of athletics with 

the 2024 Paris Olympic Games 

quickly approaching, but one 

Parafed athlete is already 

looking beyond this year’s 

games. 

Prebbleton 19-year-old Rorie 

Poff has had an inspirational rise 

in New Zealand para-athletics. 

A keen and extremely skilled 

shot putter, he has haemophilia 

A and cerebral palsy, which 

hinders his balance and 

coordination. 

Poff competes in the F34 

class, a category for field athletes 

with movement affected to a 

low degree in the chest and 

arms as well as heavily affected 

movement in the legs. 

Poff describes himself as 

not having “anything to do 

sports-wise” but figured shot put 

“would be a bit of fun”. 

He hasn’t looked back since 

becoming involved in the 

Parafed community in 2015. 

Representing New Zealand 

on two separate occasions, Poff 

has made a promising start 

to competing on the national 

stage. He finished fifth at the 

2022 Oceania track and field 

championships and won gold 

at the ACT championships in 

Canberra at the beginning of 

2023.

Poff’s ultimate goal is to

missed out on an opportunity to 

qualify for this year’s games, but 

this hasn’t hampered his goal 

to make the 2028 event in Los 

Angeles. 

“I’m quite young. So there’s a 

lot to build up to . . . but I have 

made so much progress.” 

Parafed Canterbury sports 

manager Hadleigh Pierson, who 

works closely with Poff, said his 

talent, commitment and hard 

work would pay off. 

“I have no doubt he will 

achieve great things and be very 

successful in the future.” 

Outside of athletics 

competition, Poff has also been 

a part of the youth council 

of the Halberg Foundation, a 

charitable organisation set up 

to help people, regardless of 

physical ability, to be part of a 

community. 

Along with other youth 

counsellors from across the 

country, Poff connects with 

young people to share their 

stories, hardships, and successes.

TWO SELWYN showjumpers 

will travel to China next month 

to represent New Zealand 

in the Asia and Pacific Cup 

Showjumping Challenge. 

Rose Bowden, 17, and Georgia 

Lewis, 15, are among a team 

of four Kiwis selected for the 

tournament for riders aged 

14-17, alongside Kate McKeen 

(Papatoetoe) and Caitlyn 

Wilkin (Warkworth). 

For Bowden, from Leeston 

and who belongs to the Rakaia 

Pony Club, it was an extra 

special call-up – her mum’s side 

of the family are from China. 

“I haven’t (been to China), so 

it’s all new,” she said. 

Bowden’s mother Suyin said 

for her daughter to compete in 

China was special. 

“We’ve sort of brought them 

(Rose and her sister) up to be in 

touch with their heritage a little 

bit. 

“She doesn’t speak the 

language or anything, but 

she’s aware that she’s got 

a connection to Asia, so it 

is definitely special in that 

respect.” 

Bowden was a non-travelling 

reserve for a trip to China last 

year, providing backup for the 

New Zealand team who finished 

fourth out of more than 20 

teams competing at the Saga 

Pony Club in Suzhou city. 

She said to finally get the callup 

was “really exciting’’. 

“It kind of felt like it was 

impossible, just out of reach, but 

now it’s happening. 

“We got an email – I didn’t 

end up opening it, mum did. 

“She told me in the morning, 

and I was so surprised. I was not 

expecting her to tell me that.” 

Lewis has been riding horses 

with the Springston Pony Club 

since she was three. 

“I’ve been riding since I can 

remember,” she said. 

“Every single day I’m either 

riding a horse or thinking about 

riding a horse.”

She now helps out younger

“It’s great to help out some

She was surprised to get the 

message she was selected in the 

team for the China event. 

“I was bouncing off the wall. 

It was absolutely awesome. It’s a 

great opportunity,” she said. 

The pair are friends, having 

competed and trained with and 

against each other. 

“It’ll be nice (to have a 

familiar face),” said Bowden. 

The team departs for China 

next month.

Everest Wildtrak sets new SUV benchmark 

THE WILDTRAK – one of 

most identifiable and desirable 

nameplates in the popular Ford 

Ranger ute range has transitioned 

to its SUV sibling the Ford Everest, 

where it’s poised to enjoy similar 

sales success. 

With its crisp assertive styling, 

class leading sophistication, 

refinement, safety, and immense 

on and off-road capabilities, it’s a 

large SUV that ticks all the boxes 

that matter. 

Tucked between the price 

leading $77,990 Everest Sport and 

$86,990 flagship Platinum model, 

the $84,490 Everest Wildtrak is 

okay rather than outstanding value 

for money. Those on a tighter 

new large SUV budget may find 

the $6500k premium over the 

keenly priced Sport variant a bit 

steep, and opt for this version, and 

pocket the change. 

However, those wanting the 

extra cred of the Wildtrak badge 

won’t see the heftier price as an 

issue. For them it’s money well 

spent, for the exclusivity factor 

alone including unique exterior 

and interior detailing and finishes, 

and a comprehensive suite of 

driver assistance systems. 

It intelligently blends tough 

truck credentials in a package 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

loaded with car-like comforts to 

satisfy those seeking more style 

and off-road attitude in their fullsize 

SUV. 

The exterior builds on the 

muscular lines of the second 

generation Everest with a dash a 

sporty sophistication lobbed into 

the mix. 

It’s offered with a distinctive 

yellow paint job that featured on 

the test drive vehicle. This is the 

first time this colour has been 

offered on any Everest and is a 

designated Wildtrak hue that 

creates an important visual pointof-difference 

over its two siblings. 

If you want an Everest with an 

extra bit visual grunt, then this one 

has it nailed. 

The ‘look at me’ treatment that’s 

liberally used on this vehicle is at 

play on multiple fronts including a 

unique grille and bumper, 20-inch 

alloy wheels with grey detailing 

that extends to the grille surround 

and mirror caps. 

I also liked the good-looking 

yet functional side steps complete 

nifty steel inserts. 

The test vehicle was garnished 

with Wildtrak logos. Among the 

targets are the front doors, tailgate, 

and leading edge of the bonnet. In 

fact, it has more badges than a boy 

scout jamboree. 

The Everest Sport uses a 

full-time 4WD system with six 

selectable drive modes, Normal, 

Eco, Tow/Haul, Slippery for dodgy 

on road conditions, and Mud/Ruts 

and Sand for more exacting offroad 

situations. Tow/Haul cleverly 

manipulates gearshift timing to 

maintain power for hill climbing, 

or the right amount of engine 

braking on down hill gradients. It’s 

not afraid of heavy-duty tow jobs, 

backed up with a 3.5 tonne braked 

towing capacity. 

An on-demand four-wheel 

drive system allows the vehicle 

to be driven in four-wheel 

drive on high-traction surfaces. 

When activated it continuously 

distributes power between the 

front and rear axles to maximize 

performance over the trickiest onroad 

surfaces. 

With 184kW of power and 

600Nm of torque the 3.0-litre V6 

turbo diesel arrived here with a big 

and well-deserved reputation.

Police say the 25-year-old 

from Burnham recorded 1026 

micrograms of alcohol per 

litre of breath. The lega limit is 

250mcg/l. He was also charged

A DARFIELD farmer has 

spoken of watching a man leap into 

the flooded Hawkins River to try and 

save himself after a helicopter winch 

rescue operation failed. 

Rod May had taken his tractor to 

the scene on Greendale Rd, to try and 

reach the middle-aged man who had 

been clinging to the branches of a tree 

in the rising waters on Sunday night. 

The man had driven into the 

flooded river, escaped from his car 

and ca led emergency services from 

his ce lphone which he managed to 

keep with him. 

Ultimately, a second helicopter 

winch operation plucked the man 

to safety after he was swept downstream. 

It was a happy ending to the 

ordeal which had lasted more than 

three hours. The rescue was among 

several in Canterbury on Sunday in 

flooded rivers. 

May said he and his family had just 

had dinner when a neighbour alerted 

them. Arriving about 8.50pm, he saw 

the floodwaters were too high for the 

tractor, however, he used its lights for 

i luminating the site where the man

Prebbleton Dairy targeted 

four times by youth believes a 

family group conference was a 

waste of time. 

The meeting involved one 

of the teens, a 13-year-old, 

his family, Oranga Tamariki, 

police and four other victims, 

including another dairy 

owner. 

Facilitated by Oranga 

Tamariki, youth justice family 

group conferences are 

intended to help youth take 

responsibility and leave them 

with a plan for the future. 

While the victims could 

speak a the meeting, Sangeet 

Mehta said the decision had 

already been made as to what 

would happen with the youth. 

The victim’s views did not 

make a difference.

A BAR patron who won $1200 

on the pokies may have been 

targeted by thieves moments after 

she co lected the money. 

A group of men who were in 

the bar a the same time are the 

focus of police inquiries. It is 

believed they watched her being 

paid, and then quickly swooped. 

The incident happened at The 

Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln 

two weeks ago. 

After she was paid out a the 

bar, the men who had been 

si ting nearby went over and 

congratulated her. While she was 

distracted the money disappeared 

from her handbag. She only 

realised it was gone after she left 

the hotel. 

Police have taken CCTV 

security camera footage from the 

hotel which shows the men going 

over to the woman and mobbing 

her in a congratulatory way. The 

footage also captures a hand from 

one of the men going towards the 

bag. 

Police say they may have 

identified one of the group but 

aren’t saying anymore about 

the incident. The Selwyn Times 

understands the men are from 

the Amberley area.

greyhound industry to improve greyhound welfare, 

the organisation says the industry has been unable to 

adequately address its animal welfare problems.

obligations and is no longer acceptable in New Zealand 

society. A recent survey carried out by an independent 

research company on behalf of SPCA reports that

– what does it mean? 

Marketing a property is 

more than presentation 

and advertising. 

Conceptually, marketing is 

identifying what prospective buyers 

are looking for then providing this. For 

example, larger homes and sections 

may appeal more to families. Young 

couples starting out, generally have 

tight budgets leading them to smaller 

properties, while older people may be 

looking to downsize. 

Brand new has a particular appeal 

however there will always be a market 

for established homes. Having a 

picture in your mind of the type of 

buyer will help in determining the 

features to emphasise. 

If repairs and maintenance need 

to be carried out before putting the 

property on the market, seek the 

advice of a real estate agent. They 

can advise on what tasks are worth 

completing and what might be 

unnecessary expense. 

Installing a new kitchen or changing 

the carpet may lift the house but will 

the expense be recouped in the sale 

price? On the other hand, modernising 

an outdated kitchen or bathroom 

could make a huge difference to 

the look of the place. Avoid going 

overboard unless the capital value of 

properties in the area justifies this. 

Real estate agents are in contact with 

prospective buyers so aware of what 

they are looking for. Draw on their 

expertise and advice to help make the 

most of the selling opportunity. 

Establishing a relevant and fair price 

for a property is important. Most 

agents calculate this based on the price 

properties in the area have sold for, 

and what a particular property has to 

offer. A unique or exceptional property 

may justify a higher price, though 

run-down properties can gain more 

than they appear to merit. This might 

be due to the area or other factors that 

suggest a good investment. 

When promoting a property, mix it 

up and be creative so your property 

stands out from the rest. TradeMe 

is a must; checked by most people 

looking to buy. Present the features the 

property offers as benefits to potential 

buyers. 

Erect a sign outside the property. 

People stop and look at photographs 

and this might spark sufficient 

interest for them to visit an open 

home. Spending a fortune on massive 

advertising campaigns in every media 

might seem a way to attract potential 

buyers but may be an unnecessary 

expense without the return. A better 

philosophy could be a little often. 

This will depend on the value of the 

property, your budget and how best to
