Where Did All The

Time Go?

WITH this issue we celebrate our

43rd Anniversary of Forum Publishing

Company. Our first magazine called Flea

Market Forum hit the presses back in May

of 1981. Anniversaries are a great time to

reflect on the past and look ahead towards

the future. I’d never have imagined when I

started this publishing business at the age

of 22-years-old that we’d been around 33

years later. Our business is middle-aged as

I have become a senior!

FORTUNATELY, both the health of myself

and the business has been good. I find

myself a little more winded when walking

the trade show aisles of the many shows

we participate in during the year. And, as

you know, whether it’s your personal life

or business life (what’s the difference?) … if

you like what you do you’ll continuing to

do it, and do it well.

SO much has changed since our early

days in the industry. Forum was the first

trade magazine for the wholesale/retail

industry. We started back before the fax

machine, computers or cell phones. The

lack of those conveniences surely made

running the business more difficult and

less efficient, as well as more expensive.

AFTER our first few years we had several

competitors in our space but our business

continued to grow annually. Interestingly,

here we are 33-years later and we have

buried our last competitor to become the

only magazine still servicing the industry.

Thirty-three years and never missed a

single month!

BY being able to grow with the

marketplace we have weathered recessions

past and now current, We’ve embraced

the internet and learned how to harness

its power to fortify ourselves and our

advertisers to ensure they have a future in

the industry.

ALL of us who have been around over

four decades have always faced challenges

by being creative and making smart

decisions. People will always love to shop

whether it is in person or online and as

retailers we need to make sure we provide

what they are wanting. As wholesalers we

need to have the current and hot items to

offer. This has always been a constant and

will always be the key to success in this

industry no matter what it throws at you.

OVER the last several years we’ve made

many new friends starting their businesses

and have lost others who have gone

elsewhere. As entrepreneurs we all control

our own destinies. It is always in our hands

and we should always want it that way.

Even after another 33 years here at the

helm when arthritis will make it harder to

grasp, I’ll hang on.

dreams come true today and every day!

H&M Plans Big Openings

H&M (Stockholm) plans to open 100 new stores and close 160 locations this year, with the remaining

stores focused on supplying a positive sales contribution, according to the retailer’s annual report.

THE retailers is also investing in updates to its stores this year – with plans to refurbish 250, including

at flagships in New York, London, Berlin and Stockholm.

H&M’s physical footprint peaked in 2021 with 5000 locations. It closed 250 stores that year. Since

then, the retailer has been gradually scaling back the number of stores – it closed 197 stores in 2023,

though it opened 101 new locations that same year.

H&M ended 2023 with 4369 stores worldwide.

H&M has emphasized that its goal is quality, in-store experience for customers rather than quantity

of locations. “The physical stores continue to be incredibly important and in 2024 we are stepping

up the pace of investment in the existing stores to further elevate the shopping experience,” Former

H&M CEO Helena Helmersson said in its year-end report. “We are ensuring that we have the right

store with the right format in the right place. Our stores, which are in prime locations, are a major

asset where we meet our customers every day.”

HELMERSSON unexpectedly stepped down earlier this year. She was replaced by Daniel Erver,

former brand chief for the retailer.

Target Introduces Same-Day Delivery

TARGET Corp.’s paid-subscription program, Target Circle 360, debuts next week. It comes with a

unique twist: members will have access to same-day delivery from some of the Minneapolis-based

retailer’s competitors.

TARGET Circle 360 includes delivery from Shipt (which Target acquired in 2017) and its more than

100 retail partners.

“It wraps people into the Target ecosystem and builds the brand and also gives Target (NYSE:

TGT) a chance to offer a wider array of products than it has in stock.

THE program gives Target (NYSE: TGT) a unique competitive edge against other paid loyalty

programs that might offer streaming subscriptions or gas discounts, which aren’t included in Target

Circle 360. Even without those benefits, Target draws people with its private-label offerings from

home to clothing to food.

HOW IT ALL STARTED…

LET’s go back to the beginning….It was 1979 when I

just got married and we invested our wedding money

into a monstrous typesetting machine to start a

graphics arts company. Of course, this was precomputer

when typesetting required film, chemicals

and old cut and paste methods. I was barely grossing

$10K, which was miserable even for those years!

With clients few and far between I realized this would

be a hard road to ride and my “free” cat Ralph was in

need of an operation for which we needed funds. The

brainstorm came in August 1980 to find merchandise

to sell at local flea markets.

Our First Issue – May 1981

different flea

markets to sell

stuffed animals

and gift items.

We were on

the road to our

fortunes, or at

least to pay off

our credit card

bills.

HAVING no retail or flea market experience we

learned through trial and error at our flea market

booths. Most interestingly was that our fellow

was the 1980’s, a time of big hair, disco and bigger

dreams. We worked our regular jobs and the flea

markets seven days a week and Ralph the cat lived to

and that was that no

one knew where to find

merchandise to resell.

about starting a newsletter for flea market vendors.

With literally $100 I wrote a sales letter introducing

“Flea Market Forum” and sent it to wholesalers asking

them to send me an ad and an advance check for the

first issue. I needed $600 ($500 more than I had)

to continue servicing

the flea market

industry in a

separate publication.

TERRITORIES

Distributors or

wholesalers

allow you to

avoid most

sales problems – they do all

the work! There is a hitch

of course: You lose much

control over the selling

process. Your product is one

of hundreds the distributor

may carry, and generally, the

distributor’s salespeople

have little knowledge of

your product’s special

characteristics or selling

features. So, do not expect

sales miracles from your

distributors, particularly


when introducing a new

product.

Typically, a distributor’s

salespeople simply ask

customers “What do you

need today?” and do not

make an effort to sell your

product. Their best-selling

tool is their “line card”

which lists all products of all

manufacturers represented

by the distributor.

On the other hand,

distributors can do things

for your sales that no other

kind of sales representation

can. For instance, if you

manufacture a component

for a system, your

distributor can couple that

component with others to

make a complete package

for customers. Your

distributors can also supply

a local inventory for your

parts and provide service

to customers.

A FORMULA FOR ESTABLISHING

SALES TERRITORIES

Here is a practical formula, adaptable to

any type of business, that appeared in “Sales

& Marketing Management” magazine:

Step 1: Compile a list of your key accounts (the 20% that

contribute 80% of your sales) and their sales for the last

calendar year.

Step 2: Use Dun & Bradstreet’s Million Dollar Directory (or

an equivalent source) to determine the primary four-digit SIC

code numbers for each of these accounts.

Step 3: Identify the major and most common SIC categories

– the 20% that cover 80% of your key accounts

Step 4: Develop a ratio for the two (or more) largest SIC code

categories. This ratio represents the portion of your type of

product used per $1,000 output of the SIC-coded industry.

If you assign a rep a larger territory than

he or she normally covers, you probably

will not get effective representation outside

the normal calling area. The rep will

receive extra commissions for existing

customers, but you will not benefit from

the arrangement.

Assigning a rep a smallerthan-normal

territory does not

make much sense either. Some

manufacturers will divide up a

normal-size territory into two

parts, placing one rep in each.

They do this either because

they cannot decide between them, or they

want twice the coverage “horsepower” for

the total area. Dividing a territory in this

way is almost never a good idea. For one

thing, the reps do not like it, so they may not

push your product even in the territory to

which they have been assigned. Remember,

reps make their living handling several

product lines. They can and do neglect

manufacturers they are not interested in or

have a grudge against.

Another danger of the dividedterritory

approach is that the

rep may be tempted to take on

a competitive product in the

other half of the territory or,

when the opportunity arises,

the rep may drop your line

and work for a competitor who

offers the entire territory.

the rep feels like a second-class citizen,

because the more profitable products or

the exciting new ones are usually given

to the direct salesperson and the rep is

left with the balance. More important,

the duality of company representation

confuses customers. They often do not

know whether to call the company’s direct

salesperson or the rep.

PLANNING TERRITORIES

FOR DIRECT SALESPEOPLE

When you employ your own sales staff,

managing territories entails significant

decisions. The most important is deciding

whether to assign accounts and prospects

on the basis of geographic boundaries or

on the basis of industry groups (such as

hospitals, government agencies, insurance

companies) and types of manufacturing

firms. There are advantages and

disadvantages to each approach, and one

does not exclude the other. Many companies

manage territories of both kinds, depending

on their particular circumstances. Let’s

look at the basic considerations:
