MANAGER’S NOTES
— THE DREADED R appeared alongside
our name on the league table last
weekend but it’s a number of other Rs
that are now firmly in focus as we can look
towards the next campaign.
It can be taken as read that the coaching
team will be sending the players out to
go full tilt, but we have an eye on plans
for next season already and we will
reflect, review and regroup as we look
to quickly get amongst the top sides in
the Championship. And here’s another
R to concentrate on, one I mentioned to
the media last week, we may have had
a poor season but this is a really good
football club.
That will be evident when an old
adversary arrive at Bramall Lane today.
This is no dead rubber, this place will
not be flat, the players need to know
how important this fixture is and to give
supporters something to hang onto
throughout the summer – there’s plenty
to play for. Going forward we’ve got a plan
and a vision, if we can execute that, we’ll
be OK, but we need to make sure this
season finishes strongly, and today is a big
part of that.
I make no excuses for mentioning the
punters, but our fans are not foolish and
witness everything. They have seen a lot
of poor football this season but continue to
pay their money and travel. At times they
have walked out early and are entitled to,
including games when I’ve been manager,
and I have no issue with that because it
hasn’t been good enough. It will be good
enough next season; Blades fans won’t be
walking out because we will get it right and
get the club back to where it should be.
After the final whistle at Old Trafford and
St James’ Park were moving moments.
Our supporters stayed and applauded the
players to recognise the effort, despite the
results.
At Manchester United, the noise from
the Blades in the corner was clear. On the
field we were brave, showed personality
and created some really good openings,
we were better in certain situations and
moments at both ends of the pitch.
Then at Newcastle, it was a similar
situation, at times we were very good and
could have been three or four goals up, we
were calm and composed and played very
well in the first half. The Premier League is
ruthless, though, if you don’t put teams like
that to bed in the first half, then you open
the door for them to put you to bed. Goals
change games and attitudes.
Ultimately, it has been a poor season, we
have to accept that, and some will accept
it more than others, but we will make
changes and get it right over the summer,
it is going to be busy. I repeat, this is a
really good football club, as evidenced by
another R word. Renew, which is what a
lot of season ticket holders have done this
month, I’m told, and I thank every single one
of you for your support, it is appreciated.
We need to put this current feeling
at the back of our minds because it will
galvanise us.
player talk ...
Auston looking to the future
— THERE’S NO HIDING
it has been a difficult
campaign for the Blades,
but Auston Trusty is
determined to use the
experience to come back
fighting in the future.
The former Arsenal
defender admits defeat has
been tough to take at times
this season, but a positive
outlook on the future is
providing the bedrock to his
approach going forward, as
he looks to use the current
campaign as a learning
experience to improve all
aspects on and off the field.
He explained: “Whatever
the score is, losing in
general, is definitely
not easy (to take). It can
ruin your whole week.
Throughout your career you
get better at dealing with
situations – not getting too
high when you win, and not
getting too low when you
lose – you have to get on
with it. There’s soon another
game to focus on.
“I think you have to be
positive, even the lows, you
have to try and turn it into
something positive because
what happens can help you
learn and be a better player
and person in the future.
“You are getting tested
at the highest level. In this
league, you cannot get
away with anything and if
you make an error, you can
get exposed very quickly.
That’s been the biggest
lesson from the outside
going into the Premier
League, it is just relentless.”
There is a feeling of what
might have been for Auston,
especially in recent weeks,
with United being in good
positions on a number of
occasions to take priceless
Premier League points.
After going close against
Manchester United,
relegation was confirmed
after a defeat at Newcastle,
where despite the end
Auston Trusty is looking to come back stronger
scoreline, the Blades
created plenty of chances.
But whilst frustrated at
missed opportunities, the
USA international is still
keen to finish with some
victories in the remaining
weeks of the campaign.
He added: “It has been
unfortunate and upsetting
as a player when you are so
close to getting points and
so close to getting on the
other side of things. Those
have been opportunities
missed but hopefully before
the end of the season we
can get some wins.”
Ben appreciative for support
— HE HAS ONLY been a
Blade since January, but
the support he has been
afforded from the United
faithful has not been lost on
Ben Brereton Diaz.
After joining the Blades
on loan from La Liga outfit
Villarreal during the January
transfer window, the ex-
Blackburn ace quickly
endeared himself to the
fans with some impressive
strikes.
His latest goal arrived
at Old Trafford as United
put in a stoic display which
ultimately ended in defeat.
Despite the loss, the
Blades supporters stayed
behind the side, as they
did last weekend as
relegation was confirmed at
Newcastle.
Ben is thankful for the
support, which he says
has contributed to
a loan stint which,
despite results, has
been beneficial and
enjoyable.
He stated: “I’ve only
been here since
Christmas, but
there is
some
quality in this team. You can
always tell something about
the performance if the fans
are happy, and I thought
that they were brilliant all
the way through the game
at Old Trafford. Even when
we were down, they stayed
and cheered us on. As
players, and as a staff, we
appreciate that and, like
I have said, since I have
been here, the fans have
always been brilliant.
“I’ve loved every minute
here. The coaching staff,
the players – it has been
really good for me. I’ve
really enjoyed my time here;
the fans have accepted
me which has been nice
as well.”
In the game against
Manchester United,
Ben netted the
Blades’ second
and his fifth
since
joining the club, as Chris
Widler’s side again
gave a good account of
themselves in a 4-2 loss.
Whilst pleased with
the goal, the Chilean
international was again
frustrated not to come away
with anything.
“I’VE LOVED EVERY MINUTE
HERE. THE COACHING STAFF,
THE PLAYERS – IT HAS BEEN
REALLY GOOD FOR ME. I’VE
REALLY ENJOYED MY TIME HERE;
THE FANS HAVE ACCEPTED ME
WHICH HAS BEEN NICE AS WELL”
He added: “I was really
happy to get another goal.
It was a great team move.
“We thought that we
could cause a lot of
problems, watching the
game against Coventry
and seeing the problems
they caused, we thought
we could do that as well,
and I think we did. I don’t
think personally it was a
4-2 game to be
honest, but
that is what
sometimes good
teams can do to
you, and at the end
of the day, we came
away with nothing.”
player talk ...
Manager’s faith vital, says Mason
— LOANEE Mason Holgate
thanked boss Chris Wilder
and his staff for the faith
they have shown in him
during his stint at Bramall
Lane.
After joining from Everton,
Mason endured a difficult
start after seeing red in the
home defeat to Brighton
but has since come back
into the side with some
solid showings in difficult
circumstances.
“I’VE LOVED
IT, THE LADS
HAVE BEEN
GREAT WITH
ME, I KNEW A
COUPLE OF
THEM BEFORE
I CAME, BUT
AS SOON AS
I’VE COME
HERE, THEY
HAVE MADE
ME FEEL RIGHT
AT HOME”
After a frustrating period
with his parent club, and
a lack of opportunities
on loan at Southampton
during the first part of the
campaign, Mason has
enjoyed a run in United’s
XI, and whilst results have
been difficult to come
by, he’s enjoyed the
opportunity to play once
more.
He said: “To come here, it
has been totally refreshing
being back near home and
seeing much more of my
family but also just being
able to play the games –
I’ve absolutely loved it.
“I think it is always difficult
when you’ve not played for
a year or so which I hadn’t
at that point. The gaffer has
had faith in me, the red card
wasn’t ideal, but I came
back, and the manager
kept faith with me, and I’ve
hopefully repaid that since
I’ve been back.
“I’ve loved it, the lads
have been great
with me, I knew a
couple of them
before I came,
but as soon as
I’ve come here,
they have
made me feel
right at home
and it has been
easy to fit in here,
so I’ve really
enjoyed
it.”
After a tough start, Mason
has also won over sections
of the United fanbase,
and the backing he has
received has certainly made
things easier for the former
Barnsley ace.
He said of the support:
“Being from in and around
the area makes it a little
easier. They have been
great, I just wished we
could have repaid it with
a few more results. There
have been a few nearly
moments which means we
could have made more of a
fight of it but it is all if buts
and maybes. Like I said,
it is putting points on the
table and if you aren’t
doing that then it
makes it a difficult
position.”
Mason Holgate
has enjoyed life
at Bramall Lane

the big interview...
JACK
ROBINSON
— JACK ROBINSON, United’s most
consistent performer throughout
what has been a difficult campaign,
stood up and was counted off
the field like he has time and time
again on it, in the aftermath of
last Saturday’s relegation being
confirmed at St James’ Park.
Within minutes of returning to the
dressing room in the north east,
Jack, who had returned to action
as a second-half substitute against
Newcastle and wore the captain’s
armband for the remainder of the
game, approached United’s media
team and insisted it was him rather
than any of his teammates that
fulfilled contractual post-match
obligations.
Typically, the 30-year-old
answered honestly as reporters
threw a flurry of questions at him,
with his desire to be an integral
part of Chris Wilder’s squad which
gets the opportunity to right the
wrongs of this term next season
clear to see.
Clearly smarting at the time,
Jack faced the BBC Match of
the Day cameras amongst other
rights holders and echoed the
sentiments of boss Wilder by
insisting United will bounce back
from the disappointments of this
season, and reward the club’s loyal
supporters with a concerted effort
at returning at the first attempt
during the 2024/25 campaign.
And his on the field efforts this
term haven’t gone unnoticed in
other quarters either, with the
former Liverpool and Nottingham
Forest man, who last month
returned to Anfield as United’s
skipper, picked up the Blades
Player of the Year gong at the
Sheffield Star’s Football Awards
dinner earlier this week.
UTB: When the full-time whistle
was blown at St James’ Park,
what was your initial reaction
and does the game highlight the
issues we’ve had for much of
the season?
JR: “That result, and the secondhalf
performance, sums our whole
season up in one game really and
it hurts. At 1-1 we’re in the game
and playing well, we’d had the
better of the chances first-half
and we’d just not taken them and
been clinical enough and at this
level if you don’t capitilise when
you are on top you are going to
get punished and unfortunately,
we’ve just capitulated under a bit
of pressure at the beginning of
the second-half. Like it has too
often, it has gone from two, to
three, to four and five quickly and
we find ourselves well beaten and
out of the contest. We just haven’t
been good enough and when the
full-time whistle went it confirmed
what we’ve feared for a while, and
it is a horrible feeling.”
UTB: The majority of the
travelling supporters that had
followed the team to Tyneside
showed their support until the
end and waited to applaud the
players off following a postmatch
chat by boss Chris Wilder
on the pitch. What is your
message to them?
JR: “It is obviously disappointing
for us, but personally I really feel
for the fans because their support
deserves more than this and
they’ve been superb all season.
They’ve had very little to shout
about but even at the weekend
when our fate was sealed, they’ve
waited up there in the stands
and given us an applause and
they deserve so much more than
we’ve given them this season.
We as players need to look at
ourselves and it is going to be a
big summer for sure. Speaking to
“THE FUTURE IS CERTAINLY
BRIGHT WITH SOME OF
THE YOUNGER PLAYERS
COMING THROUGH THE
RANKS. ‘BLASTER’ HAS BEEN
EXCELLENT AND DESERVES ALL
THE PLAUDITS HE’S GETTING
AND YOUNG ‘BROOKSY’
HAS DONE WELL TOO”
the manager, he knows what he
wants and how he wants things to
look next season and personally
I think we’ll turn it round. We are
going to have to use this season
as motivation to lick our wounds
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs NOTTINGHAM TINGHAM FOREST

UTB 15
and come back raring to go next
season. We knew we could put
Newcastle under pressure, and
we did first-half, but we’ve fallen
at the same point all season, they
started positively in the secondhalf
and we just lost control and
gone under when the heat was
turned up on us. When you are
conceding so many goals,
especially away from
home, there is no
coming back.”
UTB: This isn’t the
time to look for
excuses, but do
you feel there have
been mitigating
circumstances
that have
hampered
our chances
this season?
JR: “The injuries we’ve had
this season haven’t helped, that
is obvious. We’ve lost so many
experienced players, and we are
quite a young and inexperienced
group really, not just in Premier
League terms but even in senior
appearances in general, but the
future is certainly bright with some
of the younger players coming
through the ranks. ‘Blaster’ has
been excellent and deserves
all the plaudits he’s getting and
young ‘Brooksy’ has done well
too since the gaffer returned.
We need those performances
that they have produced when
thrown into the team across
the board, because we’ve been
hit and miss all season and we
simply can’t have players going
missing in games at this level
because, as we’ve seen too often,
the scoreline can go against you
quickly. But what has gone is in
the past now and we will be better
next season, much better and we
have to be having a right go and
bouncing straight back.”
UTB: How frustrating are the
concession of goals in quick
succession, because for periods
of a lot of games recently,
including in away defeats at
Liverpool, Manchester United
and Newcastle, we’ve been
competitive for long periods?
JR: “You can see we are
capable of producing moments
and enjoying spells in games
where we are good, look really
competitive and at times even
comfortable. But I think sometimes
it is just a lack of experience and
being able to draw on that mental
strength to weather storms and
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs NOTTINGHAM TINGHAM FOREST

16 UTB
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs NOTTINGHAM TINGHAM FOREST

UTB 17
navigate through tricky spells.
There are some games where we
should have put the game to bed,
like Fulham at home, and if we
fail to do that then we should be
seeing the game out better, so it
is our fault and the goals against
column is what has hurt us the
most. Unfortunately, we’ve not
been good enough individually
or as a unit and it is something
I’m sure the manager will address
in the summer because last
season’s promotion was built on
solid foundations.”
UTB: How important is it,
especially for our loyal fans, that
we end the season on a high if
possible? Is there a sense of the
players owing the supporters
something to hold on to heading
into the close season?
JR: “We will analyse and reflect
on everything that has happened,
as we already have done at
certain points, because it has
gone badly wrong, and nobody
can shy away from that fact. But
we will be working harder than
ever during the summer and
throughout pre-season to make
sure we bounce back and start
well in the Championship,
which as we already know is a
completely different ball game
compared to the Premier
League. It will be tough; it is
a long slog of a season with
46 games to play but we must
regroup now and in the
earlier weeks of the summer
because the best chance
you have of coming
straight back up is in that
first season like Leicester
City have done this time
around. The supporters have
done themselves and the club
proud this season, unfortunately
too many times we as players
have fallen short, so we have to
look in the mirror and be honest
enough to know that this season
hasn’t been acceptable. The fans
are more important than anyone
else, they were before us, and will
support this club long after we all
leave. They are the backbone of
the club, and we now owe them to
get Bramall Lane rocking again.”
UTB: Earlier this week, you
were presented with the club’s
Player of the Year award at the
Sheffield Star’s awards night,
what did winning that accolade
mean to you on a personal level?
JR: “It is nice to win something
for my efforts coming towards
the end of a tough season. It is
easy to say but at the start of
the season, we never envisage
being where we are today. It
has been difficult, but the lads
have given it everything, we’ve
tried to be competitive and dig
in and at times there have been
moments of encouragement, but
it is unfortunate that we have
had our fate sealed with three
games remaining. I’ve enjoyed
the challenge of playing in the
Premier League, it has taken me
a long time to get back to playing
consistently. I’ve enjoyed testing
myself against some of the best
players out there, and despite the
disappointments, it is something
I’ll look back on with some pride
during the summer because
I’ve had a decent season, but
relegation isn’t nice, and we’ve not
performed to our maximum.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs NOTTINGHAM TINGHAM FOREST

18 UTB
UTB: When you were first
signed by Chris Wilder, you were
competing with Jack O’Connell
for a starting jersey, how has
your United career evolved after
his premature retirement?
JR: “It wasn’t nice how it all
ended for Jack, but it gave me an
opportunity to try and get some
games and stake my claim. That
second season the last time we
were in the Premier League also
ended in relegation but the next
18 months or so is a spell I look
back on with a lot of happiness
because I’ve worked so hard to
get my rewards and I’ve managed
to have another crack in the
top-flight which is what everyone
wants to do. I feel I can hold my
head up high and say I’ve given
it everything because I love this
club so much. There have been
ups and downs, love and hate at
times, but it has been a challenge
and really defining for me as a
character and as a player.”
UTB: This season you’ve
become something of a fan
favourite, with the obvious
highlight coming when leading
the team into battle as skipper
at Anfield. That must have
been an evening which you’ll
never forget?
JR: “When the manager told me
I was going to be captaining the
team I was delighted, and it was a
massive achievement for me. It is
something I wasn’t expecting, but
I wear that armband with pride,
and it is something I’ve wanted to
do for this club because I’ve had
a good four-and-a-half years here
already and hopefully there are
many more to come. The manager
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs NOTTINGHAM TINGHAM FOREST

UTB 19
is clear on what he wants to do
in the summer, it is going to be
a hard slog in pre-season, but
the obvious aim is bouncing
“I KNOW I’M CLOSING IN
ON 100 LEAGUE STARTS
WHICH WILL BE A NICE
MILESTONE, BUT NEXT
SEASON WE WILL HAVE ONE
GOAL AND THAT WILL BE
WINNING PROMOTION”
straight back. I see my longterm
future here; I’ve committed
myself to the cause previously
and I feel privileged to have a
real connection with the fans
now and that love they
give me is something
I really appreciate.”
UTB: At the
age of 30, do
you feel added
responsibility now
as one of the more
experienced players
that will lead the club
next season?
JR: “The more
pressure I can take
off the likes
of ‘Blaster’,
Brooks and
any other
younger
players
that will be
looking to
establish
themselves
the better.
I see that as
part of my
role now and
I’ve matured an awful lot in my
time here because that hasn’t
always been my mindset. I’m
a senior professional in this
group, the current captain on the
field and I’ll be one of the older
lads still here if certain players
move on in the summer. I’ll take
everything on board and helping
these lads is something I’ll relish,
although the likes of ‘Blaster’
don’t need any help from me
because he is excelling in every
single department, even the
captaincy! I’ll look to relieve as
much pressure on everyone else
next season to enable them to
concentrate on their own games,
we need individuals playing
with confidence and expressing
themselves. I’ve played more
games for the Blades than any
other club and having had it
brought to my attention recently,
I know I’m closing in on 100
league starts which will be a nice
milestone, but next season we
will have one goal and that will be
winning promotion.”
derby honours at Bramall Lane after a 2-0
win over Sheffield Wednesday.
In front of 1,500 fans, goals from Ryan
Oné and Louie Marsh in either half secured
maximum points as the Blades temporarily
moved back to the top of the Professional
Oné opened the scoring when he
picked the ball up following Marsh’s deft
flick, bursting past his man before finding
the corner.
The crucial second saw Owen Hampson
and Jay Tinsdale involved, then Marsh
skipped into the box and fired an
unstoppable effort into the top corner.
— IT HAS BEEN A MIXED BAG of results
over recent weeks for United’s U18s with
the standout performance coming against
Peterborough.
After being defeated 4-2 by
Bournemouth, Matt Thorpe’s side bounced
back with a convincing win on the road
against Posh.
United opened the scoring when Ethan
Cummings picked out Lamine Sidibe who
slotted in with a first-time finish. Cummings
was provider again, teeing up Marshall
Francis to make it 2-0.
Five minutes into the second half it was
three when Theo Howard nicked the ball
off a defender before converting.
Dylan Tawodzera got forward and saw
a whipped cross catch the wind and go all
the way to make it 4-0.
United couldn’t back it up though and
were then beaten 3-0 at Charlton.
— UNITED WOMEN’S U21s put in a superb
performance in the Professional Game
Academy Cup final to defeat Chelsea 2-0.
After a cagey opening, the final
at Northampton’s Sixfields Stadium
eventually began to open up with United
taking the lead before the break.
A ball in behind freed Grace Foy who
was brought down by goalkeeper Katie
Cox, with the referee subsequently
pointing to the spot. Eva Butler stepped
up to send Cox the wrong way and give
United the lead heading into half-time.
With seven minutes remaining, United
secured the crucial second goal. Tilly
Bristow won the ball back in midfield and
surged forward on her own before slotting
home the winner.
Chelsea threw everything at it in eight
minutes of stoppage time but United dug
in and saw the game out to win the PGA
Cup for the first time.
GOODBYE BUT
NOT FAREWELL...
— FOUNDER MEMBERS of SUDS
(Sheffield United Disabled Supporters)
Janet Ireland and her husband Cameron
have, after 26 years, decided to stand down
from their roles.
Janet has been the leading light fighting
for disability rights at the Lane and helping
supporters with disabilities enjoy the Blades
both home and away, but now is the time to
spend more time with family.
SUDS has been Janet’s baby and has
raised thousands of pounds which has
been donated to various charities in and
around Sheffield, as well as running 26
annual anniversary meals at the club.
Janet, with support from Cameron and
the committee, were the leading lights
in getting a disability lounge at the Lane
named The Chris Morgan Disability
Lounge.
Lots of former players have supported
SUDS over the years but no more than
Tony Currie, the SUDS patron, whose own
words are every club needs a Janet.
Cameron and Janet are both guests of
Tony today in the TC suite after the SUDS
Committee thought it was the right way to
celebrate their combined achievements.
Thank you Janet and Cameron for all
your hard work.
SUDS have made Janet and Cameron both
honorary life president and vice president
in recognition of 26 years’ service.
THE LAST OF A FAMOUS TEAM...
Blades
historian John
Garrett’s
inimitable
account of
following the
Blades always
provides a
talking point
as UTB again
extends a
platform for
his popular
article...
— TRYING TO TRACK me down
in the week now is not as easy
as it used to be. I spend the lion’s
share of my time as a valuer for
Graham Budd Auctions, so I don’t
always get messages straight
away with not being around the
Lane as much.
So, it was a sad call for me to
make recently when I saw several
missed attempts at tracking me
down by Pam Moran, daughter of
Blades legend Joe Shaw, made
even worse by finding out that
Joe Shaw’s widow Hettie
sadly passed away recently
her mum and, of course, Joe’s
widow Hettie, had sadly passed
away aged 96.
If I was fortunate when I first
started at Sheffield United to get
to know a lot of the lads who were
still around who played in the 40s
and 50s, and some that had been
around before, then I was just as
lucky to have got to know their
wives, and what a tale they could
always tell.
The youngest of the wives from
the ‘50s was the wonderful Beryl
Shaw, wife of Graham and usually
‘Bez’ to me as I could get away
with it. She came into the world
of being a football wife when she
was just 17, and would always tell
me how scared she felt at first in
the company of such illustrious
names as Hagan, Brook and
Ringsted. The fact that they were
a tight unit and families regularly
socialised with each other made
the transition pretty easy, and
friendships were made that
endured a lifetime.
It seems incredible now,
but all this United royalty was
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs NOTTINGHAM FOREST

36 UTB
never allowed into what was the
Players’ Lounge after a game.
When I say lounge, in reality it was
the snooker room, a post training
hang out for many a legend with
the tables covered and piled high
with tea, coffee, bottles of beer,
sarnies and cakes!
Beryl said it would have been
hysterical had it not been so
Victorian. Whatever the weather they
all had to huddle in the doorway of
the ice cream factory on John Street
waiting for the men to appear.
All of them were brilliant company
and the much-missed Derek Dooley
made sure that the club stayed in
touch even after their husbands
had passed to a higher league. He
understood the role they had all
played better than most, thanks to
the support Sylvia had given him
during the tragedy that cost him his
leg and playing career.
By default, they all got nicknamed
‘The Golden Girls’, and the title wasn’t
meant with anything other than
fondness. Most of the time, all were
a bit bemused that they were still
sought after, even after their hubbies
were long gone, but in the grand
scheme of things, they all played a
huge part at such a different time
for the game.
Although the lads would have
earned more for playing the game
then than most who watched them,
it was still a fraction of what can be
earned today. You also had some
incredible tales of how the club dealt
with them, and one story in particular
always sticks in my mind.
Harold Brook was a Blade through
and through. Sheffield-born in 1921,
he joined the club, firstly as an
amateur way back in 1939. He was
an all-rounder, playing both football
and cricket for Sheffield Boys, but
his early years in the game were
robbed by service in the war. He
also turned out for both QPR and
Manchester United over the period
whilst he served in the RAF, but he
eventually returned to the Lane and
became a key part of the side that
lifted what I regard as our ‘missing
honour’ – namely the Wartime North
Championship in 1945, going on to
proudly skipper the Blades winning
the Division Two title in 1952/53.
‘Brooky’ was a good player and
servant, making 286 appearances,
netting 111 goals. He also had a
business head on his shoulders,
as he and the great Jimmy Hagan
owned a sports shop. Jimmy’s wife
Iris and Mrs. B would always be in
charge of the shop when the boys
were playing but would try and
close on a Saturday a little bit early
so they could rush down Hill Street
and get in through one of the gates.
Imagine that, the wife of the skipper
and arguably one of its greatest ever
↑ Harold Brook
went on to
play until he
was nearly 37
after leaving
the Lane
Hodgkinson
hailed the
defence which
played in
front of him
players squeezing and huddling
in to get a glimpse of their other
halves playing!
Back then, even when your
contract was up, the club owned your
soul. If they decided that they weren’t
giving you another year, they still had
you as you couldn’t go anywhere
else without their blessing, and
sometimes a fee!
Despite scoring on what would
prove to be his final appearance, the
Blades doctor reported to the board
that, due to a bad knee injury ‘Brooky’
had sustained a while earlier, his
career as a player was over, therefore
a contract was out of the question.
On the morning Mrs. B gave birth
to twins, the gift in the post Harold
received after his years of service
was a curt letter informing him that
his services would no longer be
required, and that the family had two
weeks to vacate their club house.
Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Brook!
‘Brooky’ just accepted his fate, as it
was the way of many players back
then. Leeds United spotted what was
going on, had medical investigations
on the suspect knee, found no real
issues and he went on to score a
further 47 goals for the Peacocks in
103 games over a four-year period,
bringing his career to a close aged
almost 37. Not a bad bit of business
by then Elland Road manager
Raich Carter.
It’s six years since myself and
Mrs. Garrett were invited to a get
together at the Green Dragon up in
Dronfield to celebrate Hettie Shaw’s
90th birthday.
I was fortunate to get to know Joe
pretty well back in the day at United,
even though I never saw him kick
a ball for the Blades. My dad was a
pretty good judge of a player, and he
described Joe as “majestic”, which
is pretty much what everyone who
played with him said. The greatest
defender of his generation not
to get the full England cap he so
richly deserved.
I once asked Alan Hodgkinson
what made that great United defence
so special.
He said: “Well, you had Cec
Coldwell, and what he lacked in
finesse he more than made up for
in passion, commitment and agility.
Then, you had Graham Shaw who
was pure silk wrapped in a cast iron
glove with energy and pace to burn.
Gerry Summers was stylish and
cultured, never wasting a ball. Brian
Richardson was as hard as nails, as
fierce an enforcer at the back as
you could get in the game, and then
there was Joe. You know, I played all
of those games behind him, rarely
saw him have to run and never found
him out of position. His awareness
of space and timing was incredible.
He just knew when and where to be
at the right time and never hoofed
a ball. Every pass was in point and
measured. Class.”
Coming from ‘Hodgy’, who was
there and talked from experience,
I doubt you could get a better
endorsement. The money back
then meant there had to be another
↑ Derek
Dooley always
looked out for
the widows
of some of
United’s
former greats
source of income
to keep the family
going, and they had,
if memory serves
me, both a fruit and
veg shop and at
one point a wool
and haberdashery
as businesses on
top of the usual
demands of being a professional
footballer.
What sticks out in my mind about
that wonderful Sunday afternoon to
celebrate 90 years was the people
who were there. It would be the last
time that I would be able to sit and
listen to Hettie, Beryl Shaw, Irene
Brook and Jean Ringstead as sadly
they have all, bar Jean, joined their
husbands in a higher league since
that day passed.
The loss of Gerry Summers a few
weeks ago also meant that there was
nothing left of the side that gained
promotion back to the top flight
of the English game and pushed
Leicester City to three FA Cup
semi-finals.
If you called in to see Joe for a
brew and a chat, and I did many
times, it was never just Joe, Hettie
was always there at his side, keeping
you filled up with tea, sarnies and
tales of times gone by. As said, I was
in awe of Joe for what he was, and
I never, ever, lost sight of just how
lucky I was to have the honour of
being welcomed into his home to talk
about the beautiful game. Looking
back, I was just as lucky to have had
Hettie and the rest of the ‘Golden
Girls’ to give me the other side of the
coin for good measure.
It was wonderful that later players
and their wives were also on hand
that afternoon to wish her the very
best. Another part of the roles that
Beryl, Hettie and co did was to take
the younger lads under their wings,
helping them to blossom and be a
real part of the family we know as
Sheffield United.
Finally, I heard that Pat Spencer
passed away the other week. Now,
many of you will never have heard
that name or know who she was, but
others will tell you that she was the
mum of David Spencer, known to
many as ‘Shred’. Pat was a lovely and
very patient woman to say the least.
When we first started running our
own coach back in the day, ‘Shred’
would always be there to give you
advice and, when you needed to
track him down late to try and get a
seat on one of his legendary ‘tours’
for an away game at his home, it was
invariably Pat who answered the
door and generally directed you from
Stanhope Road to the Royal Oak!
I remember how taken aback
she was after his passing by the
outpouring of sadness and respect
that came the way of the family,
especially as the cortege stopped at
Bramall Lane on his final journey. To
Pat, Davie was her son, to Blades he
personified just what being a fan was
all about, and that transcended the
football generations. A complete one
off in so many ways. Bless you Pat.
Maybe there is another breed
Former Flashing Blade editor Matthew Bell allows UTB to take a look at
his personal collection of photos from decades following the Blades…
Darlington vs Sheffield United
DIVISION FOUR, MAY 15th 1982
— DARLINGTON away,
the last game of United’s
only season in the Fourth
Division. We were already
promoted but needed
a point to take the title.
United fans filled many
away grounds that season
but this was going to
be something different.
Matches were not all-ticket
back then even when a big
crowd was expected, so
nobody really knew how
many Blades fans would
travel to Feethams. It turned
out to be more than 10,000.
The official attendance was
11,130, but I’m sure it was
many more.
We realised what kind of
day it was going be when
we passed a coachload
of referees on the A1. On
arriving in Darlington we
went in a pub in the Market
Place. It was a hot day so
we stood outside, where we
were joined by three gorillas
who ripped off their heads
to reveal dripping-wet
human forms beneath.
Suddenly about 20
Darlington fans ran up the
street punching and kicking
out at any Blades they
encountered. We cowards
stood well back but Carl,
who was a bit daft, chased
after one and kicked him
up the backside. But the
police were on the scene
and Carl was nabbed, losing
his glasses in the process.
Our pleading that he was
retaliating after being
attacked cut no ice, but at
least they let us retrieve his
glasses from a shoe shop
doorway before carting
him off.
So Carl missed all the
fun... the pink panther, a 6’4”
baby in a pram, Batman and
Robin, chickens, Charlie
Chaplin, doctors, nurses,
a fake referee shaking
hands with Bob Hatton
(see the first picture), bogus
policemen going mental
when we scored, vicars,
French maids, nuns, fairies,
Blades fans spilling over on
to the pitch surrounds, the
linesman running the line
five yards onto the pitch, the
ball never going out of play
as the Blades fans kicked it
back in, Cooperman joining
manager Ian Porterfield in
the dug-out. The real referee
sensibly got all the players
(apart from the two poor
goalkeepers) near the tunnel
before blowing the final
whistle, but it did no good
as the pitch was covered
by Blades before any of the
players could get off.
United midfielder John
Matthews was a bit cleverer:
he jumped onto the rapidly
emptying terrace and ran
round the back of the
stand to get to the dressing
room that way. Meanwhile,
many United players were
stripped of their kit as
they struggled through
the crowds. Colin Morris,
wearing only a jock-strap,
was last to make it, fully
15 minutes after the final
whistle. If you look closely
you can just make him out in
the second picture.
When everything calmed
down, we had to get Carl
from the police station. The
sergeant on duty said he
wouldn’t be released for a
few hours, so Ray piped up:
“If you don’t let him go soon,
you’d better be prepared
to call an ambulance. I’m a
diabetic and I haven’t got
any insulin with me. If I don’t
get home in a couple of
hours I’ll fall into a coma and
it’ll be your responsibility.”
Whether this was true or
just a marvellous ruse we
didn’t know, but it worked,
and within 10 minutes Carl
was back with us. He had to
return to Darlington a few
days later, and was given
a £50 fine for a breach of
the peace.
For the record, Bob
Hatton and Keith Edwards
scored the goals as we won
2-0 to finish as Division Four
champions, 96 points and
94 goals, of which Edwards
got 35.
TURF WARS 1...
The final county cricket
match was played at
Bramall Lane in the
summer of 1973. It was
memorable for many, not
least John Lister who
literally took home the
cricket square. Journalist
Deborah Wain recounted
the story for Sheffield
nostalgia magazine
My Kind of Town and
her feature is kindly
reproduced here...
— NEWSPAPER headlines
declared it was over and
out for county cricket
at Bramall Lane when
Yorkshire and Lancashire
drew in the final ever
first-class match, played
on the 4th, 5th and 7th
August, 1973.
At the close of the final
innings, cricket fans poured
on to the pitch to hack
out bits of turf to keep as
a memento of the historic
occasion.
In fact, such was the
damage, it prompted
United’s disgruntled
secretary, Keith Walker, to
tell a Sheffield Star reporter
that the ground resembled
a “battlefield”.
One supporter must have
been the envy of many on
the day, as he had won a
competition organised by
The Star to take home the
wicket turf – 44 square
yards in total!
In addition, John Lister,
bagged 365 pints of Stones’
finest bitter, donated by
Bass Charrington, and a
Toby jug.
John, who was a 29-yearold
maintenance fitter at
the time, explained: “The
competition was about
Roses matches that had
been played at the Lane.
You had to judge which
↑ The Toby jug was one part of a great prize
were the best matches.
I sent in numerous entries,
one of which I studied the
reports of the matches and
the others I drew lots, as
I thought it was a bit of a
lottery. The winning entry
turned out to be the one
I had studied the reports for.
“I was due to get married
that month and we were
living in a first-floor flat
on Carterknowle Road so
I could not make use of the
turf. So it was divided, with
half going to my brother in
Leeds and half to a good
friend in Worksop. When it
was laid it looked just like
pristine condition which you
would expect having been
nurtured and maintained by
a ground staff team.
“Sadly, my brother and my
friend did not have green
fingers and in a matter
of weeks this prized turf
quickly became a run of the
mill lawn.”
It would be poetic to
report that the grass was
at least still growing to this
day, but sadly that isn’t the
case – either in Yorkshire or
Nottinghamshire.
“My friend moved house
in 1976 and my brother
in 1986. In the ensuing
years it has got lost in time
where the turf came from
to such an extent that
both properties now don’t
have any grassed area and
both have instead stone
chippings,” explained John.
A ‘slice’ of turf John had
in a special container also
died. As for the beer, that
disappeared very quickly
indeed!
The Toby jug was part
of John’s prize as the
presentation was at the
Crosspool Tavern on the
day it reopened after
refurbishment as a Toby
Inn. The prize was handed
over to John by the late
Yorkshire and England star
Herbert Sutcliffe.
John added that it was
a sad day for him when
cricket finished at the Lane.
He said: “I have so many
fond memories from the day
my father took me to my
first game as a nine-year-old
to see this team from the
other side of the world who
wore these funny green
baggy caps. Of course they
were Lindsay Hassett’s
touring Australians.
“I was at the Lane 15
years later when Yorkshire,
skippered by another alltime
great, Fred Trueman,
beat Bill Lawry’s Aussies by
an innings. I have wonderful
memories not only of
cricket but also the Blades
during the 50s and most of
the 60s.”
Third prize-winner in
The Star competition was
then 40-year-old Terry
Payne, of Churchdale Road,
Frecheville. He won eight
square yards of turf and 90
pints. He told reporters at
the time that he didn’t have
far to go to enjoy his beer.
The Birley Hotel is “just
round the corner – and the
eight square yards of turf
I’ve won will replace a bad
piece on my lawn, and my
six-year-old son, Steven, will
enjoy playing on it.”
Terry described how he
once played at the Lane
for the Norton & District
League against the Selby
League.
“We lost, but it was a
tremendous experience
playing on the grounds”,
he said.
MEMORABLE
PROGRAMME
COVERS
Dave Burkinshaw tells
the story of some famous
programme covers from
down the years…
— FOLLOWING the Blades’
relegation from the Premier
League at the end of the
1993/94 season, it had
taken the club 12 years to
regain the same status.
Under the management
of Neil Warnock, United
had memorably clinched
promotion to the Premier
League at the end of the
2005/06 season. As for
many newly-promoted
clubs, the Blades had found
the transition to the topflight
demanding and as
2006 came to a close, the
final opponents of the year
were Arsenal.
Prior to their visit to
Bramall Lane on 30th
December 2006, the
Gunners stood in third place
in the league table but were
already 14 points behind
leaders Manchester United.
The Blades were in 17th
position, two points clear of
the relegation places.
Given the status of the
opponents, and the fact
it was close to the end
of a memorable year for
the Blades, the club had
a produced a 100-page
special edition. Featured
on the front cover was
Phil Jagielka and Arsenal’s
impressive young Spanish
star, Cesc Fabregas.
A crowd of 32,086
attended the muchanticipated
game which
kicked off at 5.15pm to allow
for live Sky TV coverage.
The game saw Arsenal
start strongly and create a
number of chances before
United started to get more
into the game. Midfielder
Alan Quinn missed a great
chance before, in the 40th
minute, he passed the ball
forward for powerful young
French striker Christian
Nade. Nade got the better
of Arsenal defender Kolo
Toure before side-footing
past the goalkeeper Jens
Lehmann. It was just the
boost United needed.
In the second-half United
had to survive over half an
vs Arsenal
SATURDAY 30th DECEMBER 2006
hour plus five minutes of
stoppage time without their
number one goalkeeper,
Paddy Kenny. Kenny
seemed to injure his thigh
muscle taking a goal-kick
and with no substitute
goalkeeper on the bench,
Phil Jagielka donned the
keeper’s gloves and shirt.
He performed expertly
as the stand-in and whilst
critics will say that Arsenal
failed to seriously test him,
he did pull off a tremendous
late save to deny Gunners
striker Robin Van Persie.
Fabregas was used as
a second-half sub, with his
main contribution receiving
a yellow card for a tackle
on Quinn meaning he was
suspended for Arsenal’s
upcoming FA Cup tie with
Liverpool. He also missed a
late chance for the visitors.
United had ended 2006
with a 1-0 victory that had
shocked many pundits and
was a credit to the team’s
character and organisation.
United moved to 15th in
the League table and the
Gunners dropped to fifth.
BLADES TALES
FROM AROUND
THE UK...
In every edition of UTB this season, Dave Burkinshaw looks
at the stories around the Blades and the home nations…
United and the National League’s
former English Football League clubs
— THE NATIONAL LEAGUE
was formed in 1979 in
England from the leading
teams in the Northern
Premier and Southern
Leagues. From the 1986/87
season their league
winners were automatically
promoted to the EFL and
the EFL’s bottom club was
relegated. Since 2003 a
second promotion place
Celebrations for Alan Cork
as United take on Oldham
at Boundary Park in 1994
was introduced via the
National League’s playoff
system meaning the
bottom two clubs in the
EFL were relegated to the
National League.
Focusing on former
EFL clubs currently in the
National League system,
this article recalls some
memorable moments
when the Blades played
those clubs in EFL games
and in one case the
Premier League.
This season’s National
League champions,
Chesterfield, last played
United in the EFL in the
2016/17 season at Bramall
Lane. The Blades won 3-2
to reach 100 points for the
season on the way to the
League One title. United
fans may also recall striker
Ched Evans notching a
second half hat-trick at the
Lane to seal a 4-1 win in the
2011/12 season.
Oldham Athletic and
United were both founder
members of the Premier
League and met four
times at this level during
the 1992/93 and 1993/94
seasons. The last time
the two met was in a vital
relegation clash at Oldham’s
Boundary Park. Alan Cork
gave the Blades the lead
in the 9th minute before
Darren Beckford equalised
15 minutes later. Late drama
followed when United
‘keeper Simon Tracey was
sent off to be replaced by
Alan Kelly. The game ended
in a 1-1 draw and both clubs
ended up relegated in
May 1994. The teams have
subsequently met in the
second and third tiers, the
last time being another 1-1
draw in the 2016/17 season.
Oldham’s near
neighbours Rochdale have
met the Blades in League
One and Two/ Division Four.
The games have often seen
a number of goals. The
Blades won 5-2 in the April
2012 fixture with the scorers
being Ched Evans (2), Kevin
McDonald, Lee Williamson
and Michael Doyle. The last
meeting was a 3-3 draw
at Spotland in March 2017
with United losing a 3-1
lead after goals from Mark
Duffy, Daniel Lafferty and
Billy Sharp.
Hartlepool United’s last
league visit to Bramall
Lane saw them win 3-2
in December 2012. On a
difficult pitch Hartlepool’s
veteran striker Steve
Howard scored twice to
give the struggling visitors
an unlikely win.
The Blades and York City
have only met in the league
in the Fourth Division during
the 1981/82 season. Mike
Trusson’s late goal gave
the Blades a thrilling 4-3
win at York’s old Bootham
that same season United
met fellow Yorkshire
club Halifax Town for the
an impressive 5-1 win at
The Shay.
Aldershot Town and
Southend United both
threatened to derail
United’s promotion efforts
in the 1988/89 Third Division
season even though both
teams were eventually
relegated. Southend
actually completed the
league double over the
Blades winning 2-1 on both
occasions whilst the Shots
won 1-0 at home but lost 1-0
at Bramall Lane when Brian
Deane scored for United.
United fans may also
recall that Southend
stunned Bramall Lane
winning 3-0 in Chris Wilder’s
third league game in charge
in August 2016. The Blades
gained their revenge with
a 4-2 win at Roots Hall in
January 2017.
of whom have played a part
in United’s post-war league
Scunthorpe were regular
recent opponents in the
Championship and League
One. They were close
promotion rivals in the
2016/17 season with both
games ending in draws.
Older Blades may recall
Chester being defeated 6-1
at the Lane with hat-tricks
from Brian Deane and Tony
Agana. Hereford United
were opponents in both the
second and fourth tiers with
their four clashes to date all
ending in draws.
Darlington will also
be recalled fondly when
United clinched the Fourth
Division title at the end of
the 1981/82 season with a
2-0 win at the Feethams
ground. Torquay were also
opponents in the 1981/82
season. Yeovil Town
eliminated United from the
League One play-offs in
the 2012/13 season winning
Every week
in Sheffield
United
history as told
through what
we read in
the Sheffield
Star and
Green ‘Un...
↓ Tony Agana
and Brian Deane
With thanks to The Star and
Sheffield Archives, we show
the copy of the actual paper
from a particular day in United
history. Today we look back
on a very famous front-page
lead in the Green ‘Un from
Saturday 5th May 1990…
BACKGROUND
— GOING INTO the final game
of the 1989/90 season, United
and Wednesday needed a
result for very different reasons.
Second Division United, level on
points with leaders Leeds, held
a two-point cushion over third
place Newcastle. In Division One,
Wednesday sat one place above
the relegation zone trap door with
a three-point advantage and a
marginally better goal difference
than third bottom Luton Town.
THE STORY
— ON THIS NOW famous day at
Filbert Street, United had to come
from behind to hammer Leicester
City 5-2 to take second spot, with
Leeds beating Bournemouth to win
the title. Closest rivals Newcastle
lost heavily at Middlesbrough
who stayed up on the final day.
The Blades would replace Steel
City rivals Wednesday in the top
flight with Ron Atkinson’s side
losing 3-0 at home to Nottingham
Forest, whilst Luton stayed up
after a 3-2 success at Derby. The
set of results saw this now famous
headline adorn the front of the
Green ‘Un after a day of drama.
WHAT ELSE HAPPENED?
— THE GREEN ‘UN reported that
the scoreboard at Hillsborough
had actually wrongly stated Derby
making it 3-3 against Luton – a
result which would have kept
Wednesday up. This mistake
perhaps typified a bad day for the
blue half of the city. It was also a
bad day for Chesterfield in their
crucial Division Four showdown
against Grimsby Town. The match
had to be held up for 13 minutes
at Saltergate following a crowd
incident where some supporters
were taken to hospital.
HISTORY UNITED IN HISTORY UNITED IN HISTORY UNITED IN HISTORY UNITED IN HISTORY UNITED IN HISTORY UNITED IN HISTORY UNITED IN HISTORY UNITE
— THIS GAME will be forever
remembered by the footballing
world as the end for Brian Clough.
But anyone from a Sheffield
United persuasion will recall
just how crucial this win was
for the Blades, in what was
an intense fight to stay in the
Premier League.
United’s achievements in
securing the win against the
backdrop of emotion surrounding
Clough’s final home game have
been largely forgotten over time.
This story, especially over the past
12 months, has been retold after
hitting the 30th anniversary of the
occasion, but few will remember
just how perilous United’s
situation would have been had
Dave Bassett’s side lost.
Going into the game, United
held a slender one place and
three-point advantage over the
relegation places. Forest, second
bottom, were just three points
behind, but had played a game
more. Forest had to win otherwise
they were down, United had to
win to avoid getting sucked right
into the scrap. With just three
games to go for Bassett’s side,
it wasn’t the do or die situation
Forest faced, but it wasn’t far off.
It was announced on April 25th
that 58-year-old Clough was to
retire at the end of the season,
bringing the curtain down on an
18-year reign which had seen
Forest lift the European Cup
twice, win the First Division and
claim the League Cup on four
separate occasions. The story, as
far as anyone outside of Bramall
Lane was concerned, was about
Forest and Clough.
Clearly suffering from ill-health
at this stage of his career, Clough
emerged surrounded by a
gaggle of photographers and TV
cameras, as Bassett and United
slipped quietly into position
readying themselves for a hugely
important relegation showdown.
The City Ground was packed,
with most neutrals looking for one
last act of managerial magical
from Clough. It wasn’t to be.
United, backed by a strong
army of supporters, provided a
professional display to ignore the
external noise and take a huge
wonderful first touch before curling
There was even time for
United’s away following to
serenade the departing Clough,
which he acknowledged, a
mark of respect which was
recalled several years later in his
autobiography.
In the immediate aftermath of
the defeat, which sealed Forest’s
relegation, Clough remarked: “I’m
sorry to have lost today obviously
but I am happy. I’m a happy man.
Happiness comes from within. I’m
a good socialist, I’m a good dad,
I’m a good granddad; I’m happy.”
United quietly departed the
fanfare, and proceeded to win at
Everton to seal survival. Another
battle won against the odds for
Bassett and another season in the
Premier League secured.
— THERE WON’T BE MANY
supporters from either contingent
that will recall this FA Cup sixth
round tie which took place over
United were aiming for the
same heroics which saw them
lift the FA Cup (for the last
time), three years previously.
After seeing off (Sheffield)
‘Wednesday’ in the previous
round – after a 4-1 replay at the
Lane – only Nottingham Forest
stood between them and a place
in the semi-final for the (then)
eighth time.
A crowd of 52,610 was the
highest of the four FA Cup ties
as United overturned Forest 3-0.
Billy Gillespie was the star of
the show but defenders Tommy
Sampy and Vince Matthews, who
kept the Reds at bay, deserved
equal credit.
The real hero for the Forest side
was ‘keeper, Alf Dixon, who, had it
not been for his heroics, the score
could easily have been trebled.
However, he was at fault for
United’s first goal of the game on
21 minutes after Albert Partridge’s
corner kick curled into the net
after he was deceived by the flight
of the ball as it slipped through
his hands. Days after the game
it was unveiled that (at some
point), during the match, he broke
his fingers!
Harry Johnson doubled the
Blades’ lead two minutes before
the break before Gillespie rubbed
salt into the wounds with his firsttime
effort on 82 minutes to wrap
up the contest for United and
send them into the semi-final.
In the semi-finals, after two
draws (2-2 and 0-0), United were
eventually defeated in a second
replay to Huddersfield Town at
Maine Road.
TC TALKS...
↓ TC and
Chris Kamara
— WELCOME BACK to the Lane
for our penultimate home fixture
against Nottingham Forest.
During my time as a player
at United, we didn’t play Forest
much. The Brian Clough era
started just after I departed the
Lane, so there was only one
season back in 1971/72 where
we came up against each other.
We did the double over Forest
that season, and I scored in both
games. When we won 3-2 at the
City Ground it was part of that
unbelievable start when we won
eight out of 10 games, and we
topped the table for a while. It
was a great time to represent the
Blades. We finished the campaign
in mid-table, whilst Forest went
down but it didn’t take long for
them to recover, and we all know
what happened under ‘Cloughie’
towards the end of the decade!
It was a pleasure at the start
of this week to honour my great
friend and colleague who played
alongside me in the above games.
I attended the Sheffield Star
awards on Monday night, and
I was thrilled when asked to induct
Ted Hemsley into the Star Hall
of Fame, something which I am
honoured to also be part of. Len
Badger has also been previously
inducted and now Ted has joined
us so the ‘Three Amigos’ are
all now represented which is
really nice.
Over recent weeks I have made
visits to see Blades fans in and
around the community. I was
informed recently the sad news
that Blades fan Bobby had passed
away. I visited him and his family
in the hospital and I said I would
give him a mention in my notes.
Bobby was season ticket for 20
years and his favourite player was
Billy Sharp. He was Manchesterborn
but became a Blade after
marrying Anne, and loved coming
to Bramall Lane to support the
team. Rest in peace Bobby.
Today, I’d like to welcome
former Blades and Forest
defender Carl Tiler, who is always
a great guest and loves coming
back. I’d also like to welcome
Janet Ireland who founded
the Sheffield United Disabled
Supporters group. She’s recently
stepped back so on behalf of
the club, I’d like to thank her for
all her hard work over the years,
and hope she enjoys a special
afternoon in the lounge today.
Last time out, Chris Kamara was
my guest, and he was brilliant, so
I’d just like to thank ‘Kammy’ for
accepting our invitation.
Before I sign off, a quick
mention for the Memory Club
which was well attended with
nearly 100 guests again. It’s going
from strength-to-strength, and it is
fantastic to see so many people
come through the door and tell
me how much it is helping them in
difficult circumstances. Long may
that continue.
Finally, although it was sad to
see our relegation confirmed last
week I, like many, am optimistic
for the future. It will be a busy
summer for Chris, but I am 100%
confident that he’ll build a side
which will be capable of putting
things right again.
Enjoy the game and, as always,
proud to be one of you!
THE An Update STORY
OF KARL WITT...
Regular readers of this matchday programme may recall Mike Firth’s article about
German World War II Prisoner of War, Karl Witt, who was allowed to train with the
Blades here at Bramall Lane while being held captive at Sheffield’s Lodge Moor
camp. Now Mike, editor at Heron Publications, has
more to report about Karl’s remarkable sporting life.…
— I WAS BEGINNING to
think I had drawn a blank
in trying to discover what
happened to Karl Witt on his
return to Germany following
his wartime detention here
in Sheffield.
I knew he had struck up
a strong friendship with
United goalkeeper Fred
White and that he went
on to play for Stuttgarter
Kickers and then Bayern
Munich, but apart from
stark details about the
number of appearances Karl
made, there was no other
information to be found.
Appeals to Stuttgart,
Bayern and the German
equivalent of the
Professional Footballers’
Association also produced
nothing.
Then, from back in
Germany, I received an
email from Niko Heindl,
editor of FC Bayern’s
monthly magazine. He had
heard about my search for
information about Karl and
also became intrigued to
learn about him, telling me
that although the time when
he played for Bayern in the
1950s is not much in focus
these days, my article in
United’s programme had
piqued his interest.
Editor-turned-detective
Niko became curiouser,
quizzing former players
who might have known
Karl, but again information
was in short supply. He also
failed to uncover anything
when he asked the Munich
cemetery administration
whether the footballer –
born on Armistice Day, 11th
November, 1923 – was
buried in the city.
However, Niko’s
determination paid
dividends when he
searched through business
records and discovered Karl
worked as a representative
↑ Karl in the stripes of Stuttgarter
Kickers FC after the war
for Shell oil products in
Munich and in 1975, he
became a partner in a
company that mainly
produced concrete chimney
stones.
Visiting the site of the
concrete business, Niko
was initially dismayed to
see it no longer existed
and the land had been built
upon, but visiting nearby
properties he discovered a
woman who remembered
Karl had a daughter, Karin,
who was also involved in a
local business.
Finally, he tracked down
Karin and visited her at
home in Waakirchen, south
of Munich. Not only was she
able to provide information
about her father’s links with
United, she also showed
Niko a scrapbook Karl had
kept of his career.
Niko was told that at
the age of 17, budding
young footballer Karl, like
many other young men,
volunteered to serve with
Nazi Germany’s Wehrmacht
forces. In 1944, as part
of a paratroop group, he
was captured by the Allied
forces in Holland and was
transported to England,
eventually being held
Once, when Karl was
allowed to visit the city
centre, he watched a United
training session. Afterwards,
he wrote a letter to the club
and was allowed to attend
evening training twice
a week.
In his scrapbook, Karl
kept a photograph of the
then Blades manager, Doug
Livingstone, with a handwritten
note (in German): “My
English coach at Sheffield
United, Mr Livingstone. He
had a great influence on
me being able to train with
a professional team as a
Prisoner of War. From this
time, a great friendship
developed between the
goalkeeper of this team,
Fred White, and us.”
The scrapbook also
contains a newspaper
caricature of Fred who,
apparently, was very keen
that United should sign the
young German.
However, Karl returned to
Germany, choosing to play
for Stuttgart, but in 1950,
the Kickers were relegated
and Karl moved to Bayern
Munich. He made a total of
56 appearances, scoring
seven goals, for Bayern’s
first team in three years.
After football, Karl began
playing tennis. He proved to
be quite talented and in the
1970s, he and his colleagues
became German senior
champions four times.
Karin, now 68, confirmed
that Karl remained a firm
friend of Fred White until the
goalkeeper’s death in 2007.
She later visited Sheffield
when Fred’s widow,
Margaret – who lived to be
104 – showed her where
Fred’s ashes had been
buried beneath one of the
goalmouths at Bramall Lane.
Karl died on September
3rd, 1999, and is buried at
Waakirchen.
Triple Distinction* in 2023,
achieved her career dream
when she was offered the
opportunity to study and
compete at Copiah Lincoln
Community College in
Mississippi. Alongside her
football endeavours, Emmi
is studying Kinesiology
(Health, Physical Education,
and Recreation), aligning
with her academic interests
and building upon the
knowledge acquired
at SUCC.
After catching up with
Emmi, she spoke proudly of
her time and achievements
at SUCC. She said: “College
helped me to gain my
scholarship to America by
supporting me through
my football journey and
helping me to maintain
my fitness and prepare to
go abroad. As well as the
academic skills, the tutors
taught me ways to adapt to
university life and helped
me learn the foundations,
so I had prior knowledge in
some subjects that I’m now
studying.”
Transitioning to life in
America has presented its
challenges, but Emmi is
embracing the opportunity
wholeheartedly, adding: “I
love being in America; it’s
a whole new experience
and lifestyle. I currently live
in Mississippi, it’s nice and
warm most of the time and
I’ve had great experiences
that I’ll remember for a
long time.”
As her pathway continues
to unfold, SUCC wish her
all the best with her future
endeavours, both on and
off the pitch.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs NOTTINGHAM FOREST

UTB 71
— IT HAS BEEN a challenging season for
Nottingham Forest on and off the pitch, with
a mid-season change of manager just one of
the hurdles on their journey as they battle to
retain their position in the Premier League.
Now Nuno Espirito Santo and his Forest
players arrive at Bramall Lane today
knowing Premier League survival is still
on the cards, despite a four-point penalty
incurred after they were found to have
breached the Premier League’s profit and
sustainability rules.
With just three games left to play, the
focus for Forest will not be on what has
happened over the course of this season as
their attention will be trained on their final
league matches against United, next week’s
home game against Chelsea and what could
be a crucial final game away at relegation
rivals Burnley.
nuno espirito santo...
— NUNO ESPIRITO
SANTO has been fighting
a few fires since he took
over as Nottingham Forest
manager in late December,
but he is relishing the
challenge heading into the
final three matches of the
season.
Points deductions,
injury problems and VAR
decisions have been
topical in recent weeks, but
despite all this Forest are
still eyeing up a chance to
achieve their primary goal
as Premier League survival
is in their sights.
A Forest side that has
won seven matches in
the Premier League this
season appreciates that
a couple of wins may be
needed and Santo is ready
to lead their charge.
“We are in a fight. It’s
going to be a tough one,
but we’ll give it our all,” said
the 50-year-old tactician.
“I think we have to realise
that we are in the process
of building at a moment
when there is a lot of noise
around the club that does
not benefit us at all.
“This club wants to grow.
We want to continue to
keep moving forward and
we are ambitious. We want
to play good football and
win matches. Then we will
get what we want.”
Santo’s return to the
Premier League last
December came after he
made a positive impact
during his time in charge at
Wolves.
He guided the Molineux
club to the Championship
title in the 2017/18 season
and then established the
club in the Premier League
before he was offered
the chance to take over
at Tottenham in the
summer of 2021.
Santo’s time as Spurs
boss was brief, but Santo
jumped at the chance
to make a return
to the Premier
League when the
offer from Forest
came his way.
He has faced
some difficult
times in his first
season
at the
City Ground, yet Santo took
encouragement from his
side’s performance in last
Sunday’s 2-0 defeat against
Champions Manchester
City and now he is looking
forward to this game at
Bramall Lane.
“We played a good
game,” he said. “We were
organised and compact
and some things we could
have done better on. It is
not easy to make chances
against City, but we did well
in periods of the game.
“The boys worked very
hard against a good team
and we need the fans to
stay behind us for the
remaining games. We
have the responsibility
to do much better
because the talent is
there, and we know
what we can do.
“We have been
playing good.
The attitude is
right, the way the
players work is
encouraging, and
we have to look
forward to the next
challenge.”
1979 European Cup Final
— BRIAN CLOUGH had already produced a few miracles at Nottingham Forest as he
guided the club to the First Division title in the 1977/78 season, but he took that success
to the next level as his team won the European Cup final against Malmo on a never-tobe-forgotten
— IN 1865, a group of Nottingham-based
shinny – a sport similar to hockey – players
met at the Clinton Arms on Shakespeare
Street, where JS Scrimshaw’s proposition
to start a football club was passed and
Nottingham Forest Football Club was born.
At the same meeting, it was agreed the
team would purchase a dozen tasselled
caps in the colour of ‘Garibaldi Red’ –
named after the leader of the Italian
‘Redshirts’ freedom fighters, who were
popular in England at the time. The club’s
official colours were established.
Their first official football match took
place on 22 March 1866 against Notts
County, who were formed in 1862.
The Football League was formed in
1888 but Forest’s application to join was
rejected and instead, they played in the
Football Alliance, winning the competition
in 1892 to eventually secure a place
in the League.
Forest won the FA Cup for the first time
in 1898 in what proved to be momentous
for the club, as it also marked the move to
AN UPDATE FROM OUR…
SENIOR
BLADES
CHARITY RAFFLE
PRESENTATION
— A BIG THANK YOU from the
chairwoman and committee
of Senior Blades to everyone,
members and non-members, who
have supported our charity raffle,
which this year will go to the iconic
and well-loved Sheffield charity, St
Luke’s Hospice.
We raised £360, and we will
hopefully, be presenting a cheque
of that value to a representative
from St Luke’s at our lunch on 14th
May. As you may recall, we lost
our dear secretary, Sheila Herring,
earlier this year and she received
excellent care in the hospice, so
it was an easy choice to make on
who should be this year’s chosen
charity.
There is still time to book your
lunch for the 14th May, which can
be done up to Tuesday 7th May by
emailing info@seniorblades.com
or by telephoning 07505 559 678
or 01538 424190.
— ON TUESDAY 14th May, 6pm-9pm in the
International Bar at Bramall Lane we’ll be holding
the first ever Rainbow Blades Fans Summit.
It’s vitally important that at the end of a season
financial accounts.
Members can
ask questions
important to
them about EDI &
LGBTQ+ inclusion
to a panel and
hear the stories
from those close to
Sheffield United &
Rainbow Blades.
The evening will include our AGM (Annual
General Meeting), which will cover our financial
accounts, our future direction, any motions and
votes. A Fans Forum with SUFC & Rainbow
MY MATCHDAY
...Andrew Whitham
Mike Firth, editor at Heron Publications, is introducing us to some Bramall Lane
characters, sharing their experiences and matchday routines. This time around it’s
Andrew Whitham, a follower of the Blades for more than 50 years...
— AS WITH MANY football
supporters in Sheffield,
being a red or blue is a
family affair and the decision
isn’t always your own to
make. In my case, I had two
elder brothers, John and
David, who’d followed the
Blades, home and away,
during the 1950s-60s and
I grew up listening to their
stories of John Harris and
the great promotion winning
side of 1971.
At that time, David worked
for Arnold Laver and
rented a house the Laver
company owned at the
corner of Cherry Street and
Shoreham Street. Before
the South Stand was built,
the attic window of the
house overlooked part of
the ground.
Being brought up on the
Gleadless Valley Estate,
my first experience of
matchdays at BDTBL was
being put on the No 51 bus
by my dad, the bus driver
being asked to give me a
shout when we got to the
end of Charlotte Road, to
be met by my brother and
walking up Shoreham Street
to his house. Our pre-match
routine was playing that
afternoon’s game in the
yard (weather permitting) at
the back of the house or on
the table football game.
As kick-off approached,
we’d pop across to the
turnstiles on Shoreham
Street and make our way to
the front of the Kop.
A few years later,
unfortunately David moved
away from Sheffield and
John gladly took over the
mantle. We’d often stand on
the John Street terrace next
to the old tunnel.
Relegation to Division
Four didn’t deter me and
I sold my push-bike to raise
enough money to purchase
my first season ticket in the
John Street Stand. That
Division Four Championship
winning season remains
one of my most memorable.
In 1993, my boss at the
time said a friend of his
was the matchday turnstile
manager at United and
was recruiting new turnstile
operators and I was at
the matches, anyway,
would I be interested? My
first game as a turnstile
operator at the Lane was
Aston Villa.
In 2007, modern
technology caught up with
us and United installed
the current ticket scanning
system, fully automated,
allowing supporters to scan
their own tickets. I went
back to being a season
ticket holder and eventually
found my current home in
the Tony Currie Stand.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs NOTTINGHAM TINGHAM FOREST

UTB 91
The house at the corner of Cherry Street –
about as close to BDTBL as anyone could live!
Keith’s Travel Team at Wembley,
with Andrew on the right
Mick Rooker got me
involved with stewarding
coaches for the official
Blades Travel Club and
I’m still involved as part of
“Keith’s Team” (Keith, Jamie,
Steve, Claire, Emma, Rachel,
Bev and Brian) looking after
coaches at away matches.
For the last two seasons
I have worked as a steward,
immediately next to the
home dugout. My matchday
starts around 11.45am when,
on arrival at the ground,
I collect my uniform.
The first job is setting
up the chairs and stools,
then following a prematch
briefing, we go to
our positions ready for
the ground opening to
the public at 1.30pm. We
always have mascots and
parents around the home
dugout area, so I generally
introduce myself, give them
a “meet and greet” and
inform them of what will
happen up to kick-off.
My Saturday afternoons
are now spent, not looking
at the pitch, but at the
crowd. Once the ground
has emptied, we carry
out a sweep of the stand,
looking for damaged seats,
lost property, etc. Stand
supervisors then give a
de-brief of the afternoon’s
events, and we generally
get away from the ground
around 5.30pm.
My favourite player
currently is James McAtee.
I hope he doesn’t mind me
mentioning this, but at the
end of the last home game
of last season, promotion
to the Premier League
had been secured and the
celebrations and medal
presentations were in
full swing. As the players
came back out for a lap of
honour, James took time
out to see a young lad who
had often appeared at
the front after games and
gave him a pair of matchworn
boots.
Now my stepson Neil
and his two boys, Charlie
and Evan, are Blades too,
all season tickets holders in
the Tony Currie Stand.
Thank you to David
and John (rest in peace,
John, I know you’re still
watching from heaven)
for introducing me to the
Sheffield United way of life.
I wouldn’t have it any other
way. Once a Blade, always
a Blade!
Blades statistician Andrew Kirkham delves into the
HELP & CORRECTIONS
CHRIS WILDER’S LEAGUE
RECORD
— IN THE FEBRUARY Aston Villa
programme, I listed the records of United’s
top six managers in terms of league games
in charge. The figures I gave for Chris had
some errors (as Phil Whitaker pointed
out) so here is Chris’s record as United’s
manager in all competitive games including
the game at Newcastle:
P W D L F A
League 225 96 49 80 310 285
FA Cup 15 10 0 5 29 17
EFL Cup 7 2 2 3 9 12
EFL Trophy 3 1 1 1 5 4
THREE LEAGUE GROUNDS
One of our much-travelled supporters
pointed out that as well as Brighton, Bristol
Rovers, Coventry and Wimbledon we
have also played league games against
Bradford City on three grounds. Following
the fire at Valley Parade, City played
‘home’ games at Odsal Stadium and Elland
Road (the one I missed) and United played
at both these venues.
HELP
EMERGENCY PROCEDURE:
In the event of any emergency you will hear a safety message
over the PA system. Remain where you are and listen carefully
to the announcement. Comply immediately if it affects your area.
Stewards, Police Officers and Officials will direct you to safe areas,
which may be through Exit Doors/Gates to the street or on to the
playing area. If you are disabled or feel unsafe in a large crowd,
remain where you are until stewards assist you. Remain calm
and do not move unless the announcement affects your area.
