Travel Tips
Provincial Parks
There are over 1,000 provincial parks in British
Columbia and 75 provincial parks in Alberta. Many
offer accessible camping for RVs, and day-use
for activities such as hiking, canoeing and fishing.
There’s always a good place to stop beside a lake
or stream for a picnic lunch or pull out a camping
chair and sit back.
Provincial parks in British Columbia can be found on
https://bcparks.ca and reservations can be made at
https://bcparks.ca/reservations. Of approximately
10,700 campsites BC Parks manages, 55% are
reservable and 45% are available on a first-come,
first-served basis (FCFS). Most campgrounds with
reservable sites also offer FCFS sites. To help you
locate BC Parks, highway signs are posted on main
access roads to provide advance notice at 2 km and
400 m from the park entrance.
While opening and closing dates can vary, and
may be dependent on weather, most BC Parks
will be open May 1 to September 30. The coastal
area and more southern parks may be open
all year. Please visit https://bcparks.ca or
https://www.albertaparks.ca and be sure to check
the Visitor Centres to determine which parks are
open along your way.
Camping fees in BC and Alberta Parks vary
according to facilities and services provided. You
can reserve a campsite online or via a toll-free
number. Sites are generally available on a First-
Come-First-Served basis as well but many of the
more popular parks fill up quickly so a reservation
is recommended to avoid disappointment.
Reservation service charges apply in British
Columbia and Alberta. The reservation and
campsite fee must be paid in full at the time of
making the reservation.
To reserve a provincial park campsite
in British Columbia, visit BC Parks at
https://bcparks.ca/reservations. Call Centre is
open from 7am-7pm PST daily at 1-800-689-9025
(North America), 519-858-6161 (International).
To reserve a campsite at an Alberta Provincial
Park, visit https://www.albertaparks.ca/
reservations or call (from North America)
1-877-537-2757.
National Parks (Parks Canada)
National Parks protect outstanding examples of
Canada’s natural environment. British Columbia is
home to seven National Parks and Alberta hosts
four famous Rocky Mountain National Parks and
park reserves run by Parks Canada, each with
their own distinct characteristics. Camping is
an excellent way to experience these national
treasures. To receive your FREE guide to National
Parks and National Historic Sites in British
Columbia please visit https://parks.canada.ca or
call toll-free 1-877-737-3783 (North America)
1-519-826-5391 (Outside North America).
Seat Belts
Alberta and British Columbia law requires that all
drivers and passengers use seat belts while driving
or riding in a motor vehicle. Strict car/booster
regulations are in place for children up to the age of
twelve years old, and they must be seated in the
rear seats in an age/weight appropriate restraint
system. Visit https://www.icbc.com/road-safety
Mobile Cell Phones
It is against the law to drive while using a
handheld mobile phone or other electronic device.
Drivers may use hands-free cell phones that are
voice-activated, or activated by one touch, provided
they are securely attached to the vehicle or driver’s
body i.e. an ear piece. For more information, visit
https://www.icbc.com/road-safety/crasheshappen/distracted-driving
Driving While Under Influenced by Cannabis
(and other Drugs) or Alcohol
It is a criminal offence to operate, or be in the care
or control of a vehicle, whether in motion or not,
with a blood alcohol content of more than .08
percent. Police in BC can issue an immediate
roadside prohibition to an impaired driver with a
blood-alcohol content of .05 or higher. Drivers with
blood alcohol content between .05 and .08 may
also face fines and license suspensions, and have
their vehicles impounded. Breath samples may be
requested by a peace officer and refusing a
breathalyzer test could also result in criminal
charges. For drug sobriety testing and implications
please visit https://www.icbc.com/road-safety/
Sewage Disposal b
Sani-stations are located at various locations
throughout the provinces, including campgrounds,
some gas stations and RV dealerships. For a list of
places to dump go to www.sanidumps.com.
Visitors are asked to respect the environment by
disposing of grey water and sewage in the proper
location.
guide at private campgrounds are net of GST
so are subject to the additional 5% GST.
The Thompson Okanagan truly has everything needed in a
British Columbian paradise. Warm, sun drenched valleys, warm
lakes with sandy beaches and lush, fruit laden orchards make
it a vacation hot spot. People come to relax by the water, golf
championship courses and sip regional wines. When boating,
water-skiing and swimming are not in season, the region’s
mountains become some of the province’s best snow-sport
resorts. With so much to offer, you can be sure of a vacation that
is either adventurous or relaxed - but never boring!
The best way to describe the Kootenay Rockies is as Canada’s most
stunning mountain scenery. Year after year, visitors are dazed by the
enormity of the mountains that rise up from the region’s valleys. The
sensation of gazing up at towering glacial peaks humbles the region’s
visitors. Even the most hardened travellers are unable to experience the
Rockies without being touched by a sense of awe. The Kootenay Rockies
region stretches from the Okanagan Valley in the west to the Alberta
border in the east. The region contains four mountain ranges: the
Selkirks, Purcells, Monashees and of course, the Rockies.
The Cariboo Chilcotin Coast is a land of big adventure
and wide-open spaces. Visit real working ranches
and ride over rolling rangeland. Fish the provinces
best fresh water lakes and secluded saltwater inlets.
British Columbia’s wild history comes to life with
rodeos, heritage villages and historic First Nations
communities. In the 1800s miners from all over the
world rushed to the Cariboo Chilcotin. The small towns
boomed into cities almost overnight with men eager to
strike it rich in the gold fields. Gold fever had hit British
Columbia and with it came a legendary era of saloons,
cowboys and Wild West frontier adventure. Eventually,
the gold rush died out. With it went the miners and the
bustling cities soon turned into empty buildings. Today,
the legends and ghost towns have been faithfully
brought back to life in towns like Barkerville, but the
frontier adventure has always been alive and well.
Help Protect Wildlife for Everyone’s Enjoyment
HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON DRIVING AND VIEWING WILDLIFE
You are in bear country
Bears are wild animals and demand your respect.
Strong and agile, they will defend their young and
their territory. All bears are potentially dangerous.
Never feed or approach a bear, especially a
cub, as the mother will not be far away. Stay in
your camper if you spot a bear while driving. Be
especially alert when hiking into the wind, as they
cannot pickup your scent. Park wardens may post
signs in areas with bear warnings or trail closures.
Be careful of wildlife on highways
Road kills take more than two hundred big game
animals a year in Alberta and BC. Many accidents
can be prevented. Watch for signs showing big
horn sheep, moose and elk are in the area. The
warnings remind you that wild animals frequently
cross the road. Be especially careful at dawn and
dusk when they usually come out to feed along
the highways. Speed zones are strickly enforced
(70 kph) on the Trans Canada Hwy in Banff,
Jasper, Yoho, and Kootenay National Parks.
Elk warnings
The national parks provide natural elk habitat.
These large animals can be dangerous, especially
during calving and mating seasons. In Spring,
from mid-May to the end of June is calving
season. Cow elk will chase people who approach
their new born too closely. Mating season starts
in late August. Male elk are very aggressive and
known to charge vehicles when annoyed. Always
keep 40-50 paces between you and an elk.
British Columbia’s north is a vast wilderness
of grizzly bears, pristine glaciers, ancient totems and
raw rugged beauty. Out of the vast land of white water,
creeping glaciers and dense, ancient forests come tales
of a wilderness steeped in mystery and adventure. The
North is a land where outdoor recreation is a certainty
and where alpine mountains and crystal clear lakes
offer everything from helicopter skiing to salmon
fishing. Ancient totems loom as a testament to show
that aboriginal culture is not just vibrant, but alive and
well. Visit and explore the North’s mysterious wild
rivers and deep forests.
VANCOUVER ISLAND & NORTHERN BC
Rental Location: Vancouver Duration: 21 nights Distance: 3,000 km
Vancouver to Port Hardy and the Inside Passage to Prince Rupert.
Then all the way to the Yukon.
This RV trip takes time. Start in Vancouver or Abbotsford with a BC Ferry crossing from
Horseshoe Bay near Vancouver to Nanaimo and spend four days travelling north to Port Hardy on
Vancouver Island. BC Ferries operates the Inside Passage route from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert.
Spend three days around the Hazeltons and then take a week heading due north up the Stewart-
Cassiar Hwy to the Yukon. Add four days to explore the Southern Lakes and Kluane National Park
en route to Whitehorse.
The long-distance route is outlined in four sections: Vancouver Island North; the three
commercial centres of Prince Rupert, Terrace and Kitimat; the three Hazeltons; the Stewart-
Cassiar; and the Southern Lakes Region in the Yukon.
Bald Eagle, Vancouver Island
SECTION 1: NANAIMO TO PORT HARDY (387 KM)
The first leg heads north on Hwy 19A known as the Oceanside Route and passes through
many delightful seaside communities such as Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Fanny Bay and Royston.
Don’t dawdle too long as your ultimate destination is still two thousand kilometers away and
there’s a ferry to catch.
Comox is home to CFB Comox Aviation Museum and Search & Rescue base. The BC Ferry
from Powell River joins up here. Study the large scale image map of the entire Island taken from
Landsat satellite situated along the Rotary Seawalk In Campbell River. The displays explain the
history of the North Island and a lot about winds and currents with spring tides up to 18 knots/
hour ripping through Seymour Narrows. Campbell River Museum features logging displays
from the days of railroad and high lead logging.
Backing onto the Ferry at Port Hardy – Gord Rees
Side-trip to Sayward. Visit this bustling dryland log sort yard to view heavy equipment wheeling
around with bundles of logs to be dumped and made into log booms to be towed to mills farther
south. Stroll out to the town wharf where sounds of whales can be heard on speakers mounted
at the visitor centre.
Woss is another logging town where the Nimpkish Valley Heritage Park includes a display
of logging locomotives and explanations for forestry practices on the North Island. Hike the
strenuous trail to the restored Woss Fire Lookout.
Telegraph Cove retains its character as one of the coast’s last remaining boardwalk communities.
The Whale Watching Interpretive Centre is built in the old cannery, with whale watch tours
headed into Johnston Strait. Port McNeill is another resource town with the Harbour Info Centre
showcasing a giant 30-ton burl from a Sitka spruce.
Whale Watching Harbour, Telegraph Cove – Gord Rees
Side-trip to Port Alice and Coal Harbour. These places lead to the Wild West Coast where
ocean waters flow into Quatsino Sound on the west coast of the Island. Historic Port Alice has
sign boards showing one of the first pulp mills in BC. Coal Harbour Museum is home to logging
memorabilia in a run-down RCAF hanger built to operate surveillance on the outer coast during
WWII. Protests against whaling led to closure of the station.
Port Hardy. Visit the Hardy Bay Seawall, dock and marina. Learn all about Pacific salmon at
the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre.
Mini cruise by BC Ferry on the Inside Passage. This ferry trip is one of the world’s great ferry
rides, and a good reason to Go North. Enjoy twenty hours of stunning views from Bear Cove to
Prince Rupert with brief stops at Bella Bella and Klemtu. Give yourself time at the terminal as the
ferry only loads from one end. The vessel has a capacity for 600 passengers and 87 cars, and can
handle 3.3 m swells and rollers across Queen Charlotte and Hecate Straits before entering the
sheltered waters of the Inside Passage. Fog banks can lift to see fish farms, lighthouses, far off
villages, and light markers on exposed reefs. Watch for whales, dolphins and sea lions.
Whale Watching, Vancouver Island
SECTION 2: PRINCE RUPERT TO TERRACE AND THE HAZELTONS (300 KM)
You get a real sense of the size of the commercial port as the ferry approaches Ridley Island
in Prince Rupert. Container ships, bulk carriers and general cargo ships connect with milelong
unit trains hauling loads of coal, wheat and potash from across the Continental Divide.
Visit the oldest standing salmon cannery which is the last of 14 that operated at the mouth
of the Skeena River.
ITINERARIES
Terrace was once a major forestry town and is now the retail and service centre for
northwestern BC and the Kitimat-Stikine Region. Interpretive panels about the town line the
Grand Trunk Pathway.
Side trip to Kitimat. This town is an excellent example of town planning that was laid out
at the start of the Kitimat-Kemano Project in the 1950s. The Kenny Dam was built with a
16 km spillway and penstocks, twice the height of Niagara Falls, to provide hydropower
to the aluminum smelter.
Float plane base in Cow Bay, Prince Rupert – Gord Rees
Side trip to the Hazeltons. Native culture is embedded in all the towns situated along the
Skeena River, and the centre of totem pole collections on the Northwest Coast. Haida, Tsimshian
and Klingit First Nations are credited with making some of the earliest totem poles. Emily Carr
was one of the first artists to grasp the compelling power of totem poles as a form of art.
Historic “Old Hazelton” remains much like the original settlement, founded in 1866 when it was
the main staging area for the Omineca Gold Rush served by the Hazelton stern wheeler, now an
historic site on the Skeena River. Its days were numbered after the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway
began service along the river.
K’san Historical Village and Museum in Hazelton, home of the Gitxsan people, is in the ancient
village of Gitanmaax near the confluence of the Skeena and Bulkley Rivers. Visit the carving
house to observe the delicate art of chiseling and whittling totem poles dedicated to preserving
native culture.
Camping along the Skeena River – Gord Rees
Kitwanga/Gitwangak is the location of the Battle Hill National Historic Site where the native
families are divided into four clans known as the Frog, Raven, Wolf and Fireweed. A collection of
totem poles is the oldest in BC. Follow the “Hands of History Tour” that leads to totem poles,
Indian villages and frontier towns in the Upper Skeena.
Side trip to Kispiox. A premier showcase of totem poles and salmon hatchery.
Gitanyow/Kitwancool is a historic village where totem poles stand alongside the museum
on the Kitwanga River.
SECTION 3: STEWART-CASSIAR HIGHWAY #37 (750 KM)
Although this segment looks like the longest, loneliest stretch of highway, its remote ruggedness
offers few towns and many points of interest. Campgrounds are well spaced at Meziadin,
Kinaskin and Boya Lake Provincial Parks. The Grand Canyon of the Stikine lies within Stikine
River Provincial Park.
Dease Lake, Stewart-Cassiar Highway - Karl-Heinz Raach
Side trip to Stewart and Hyder. Take the Glacier Highway 37A from Meziadin Junction. Pull
over for a good view of Bear Glacier and pass by the Wall of Tears where a series of waterfalls
cascade from great heights. Your passport is required to cross into the USA at Hyder, known
locally as “Check Point Charlie”. The highlight is seasonal bear viewing at Fish Creek Wildlife
Observation Site.
SECTION 4: SOUTHWEST YUKON (1,100 KM)
This Southern Lakes region includes Teslin, Tagish, Atlin, Carcross and an extension to Kluane
National Park at Haines Junction on the Alaska Hwy from Watson Lake to Whitehorse. The
Land of the Midnight Sun brings to life the stories from the literary giants Robert Service, Jack
London and Pierre Burton when discovering the North.
» continued
Some of the more than 100 Totem Poles in the Kispiox
area of The Three Hazeltons – Gord Rees
fraserway.com | 29
Turn left off Hwy 37 to visit the Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake and the Yukon Travel
Information Centre. A good spot to re-provision and refuel.
Teslin. George Johnson Museum & Heritage Park features traditional Tlingit life and trade
routes between the Coast and Yukon interior. Johnson was a Tlinget man, and a unique
businessman. There is an immaculately restored 1928 Chevy that he barged from Whitehorse
by sternwheeler to Teslin before there were roads. It was repainted in white house paint to be
disguised for hunting wolves on the frozen lakes.
Jakes Corner. Intersection with gas station on the Alaska Hwy with Hwy 8 southward back
into BC, and westward to Tagish, Carcross and Skagway.
Tagish. Located on the Yukon side of the Alaska Hwy. Six Mile Resort at Tagish Bridge.
Memorabilia and amusing signs. Local entertainment on weekends. RV sites.
Mount Logan flight seeing, 5,959m - Gord Rees
Haines Junction. Side-trip. Gateway to Kluane National Park, National Parks Service operates
the Da Ku Cultural Centre that presents a scale of St. Elias Icefields and glaciers topped off by
Mount Logan at 5,959m/19,545 ft as Canada’s highest peak. This is the greatest concentration
of surging glaciers in North America. An electronic display tracks a collared grizzly throughout
her range during the four seasons, crossing the busy highway numerous times in search of
food, or avoiding large male bears that would kill her cub. Spectacular glacier flights operate
from the local air strip.
Carcross. The highway meets up with the Trail of’98 at the terminus of the White Pass &
Yukon Railway from Skagway in Alaska where the hopeful stampeders travelled the length of
Bennett Lake to Carcross, and on to Marsh Lake. Visit sternwheeler Tutshi, the historic general
store, and the Cariboo Hotel for a cold one. Carcross Commons Visitor Centre and kiosks with
a carving shed. A tiny locomotive is the Duchess which ran on only 6 km of track carrying
supplies between Tagish and Atlin Lakes. Carcross is the world’s smallest desert.
Miles Canyon, Yukon River – Gord Rees
Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon lies 1,200 km north of Kitwanga Junction. Camp nearby
for a day or two to explore the gateway city. The McBride Museum of Yukon History describes
migration across the Bering Sea. It tells of the hardships that sourdoughs faced as the clawed
and struggled their way up the Trail of’98 to reach Atlin and Dawson City.
Treacherous rapids through Miles Canyon are visible of a suspension bridge crossing over the
Yukon River. Watch your step along the edges of unfenced bluff. Chinook salmon migrate some
2,500 km from the Bering Sea. There are viewing platforms and a viewing bridge.
Book single and multi-day canoes near the Visitor Centre on the smooth but fast-flowing
Yukon River below Miles Canyon.
Visit the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site. The Yukon Transportation Museum explains the
importance of aviation, dogsled travel, canoes and highway development in the Yukon. Despite
EV charging station, Teslas’ are seldom seen in the far North.
Katherine Lake, Southern Lakes Region – Gord Rees
Various services are available including laundromats, RV wash, tire service, diesel, propane
and sani-dump.
