TOUCHLINE TALK
GARY ROWETT
Good afternoon and welcome to St.
Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park for our
final Sky Bet Championship fixture of
the season against Norwich City.
Today’s task could not be clearer. Win the
game, to give ourselves a chance. We know
the size of the challenge ahead and in David
Wagner’s side, we are facing a very difficult
opponent. As with every side we have come
up against, we will pay them the respect they
deserve, but today is all about us.
This week, we have prepared for the game of
our lives. The players are all aware of what is
required and the staff have been hammering
home our key messages on the training pitch.
Forget whatever has gone before. This is a
one-off game, to keep the Club in the division.
That said, we must not abandon the work we
have put into the players for the past six-and-ahalf
weeks. Our principles and our expectations
remain the same, but we would be naive not to
recognise that today will be unlike any other
game.
Final days of the season are never
straightforward forward and whilst the staff
and I will be aware of what is happening
elsewhere, we cannot let it distract the players
from doing their job. We have to take care of
our result first and foremost and, hopefully,
that will be enough.
Everyone is aware of the Club’s record when
there has been a full house at St. Andrew’s @
Knighthead Park. Our home form has been
dramatically better than our away record and
we have to tap into that same energy again
today. I do not think I need to appeal to the
supporters to do their bit. I know they will. They
always do. In the minutes before kick-off, when
that huge chorus of Keep Right On rings around
the ground, there are few more hair-raising
experiences in football. If that in itself does not
encourage the players, then nothing will.
We saw the impact it had against Coventry
City a few weeks ago and many a manager has
spoken of how difficult it is when this place
really takes off. It will be the same today and on
a personal level, I cannot wait to experience it
for the final time this year.
The players have to come off the pitch at the
end of the game without any regrets. They have
to be willing to give everything they have for the
Club and for themselves. Whatever motivations
they have, tap into it and use it to go and
perform. If that is not enough on the day,
then so be it, but we have to leave everything
out there. We know what today means to the
Owners, the staff and the supporters so let’s go
and show it.
As this will be the last time I write these
notes, I want to end by expressing how grateful
I am for how the supporters have been with my
staff and me. We knew coming back here that
this was a special club, and it has been proven
so yet again. It has been a deep frustration that
we have not been able to secure as many points
as we would like. But today, we have a chance
to show that even when the chips are down,
when we have our backs against the wall and
when everyone has written Birmingham City
off, this is a football club unlike any other.
Thank you for your support.
Keep Right On,
CAPTAIN’S COLUMN
JOHN RUDDY
Good afternoon and welcome to St.
Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park for the
final time this season.
It is a privilege to be writing my first-ever
programme notes for this fantastic football
club and to be able to lead the team out is an
honour and something I take great pride in.
I would like to extend a welcome to David
Wagner, Norwich City and their fans. A club I
know well and have fond memories of and a
real test for us today as they hope to cement
their place in the play-offs.
At the risk of stating the obvious, this has
been a season of more downs than ups. On
the pitch, we have failed to deliver consistent
performances to prevent the situation we
find ourselves in today. Off the pitch there
have been many changes, some enforced and
some self-inflicted, this does not excuse the
fact that we as a group of players needed to
take care of our jobs better. The new owners
have come in and revealed the exciting plans
and projects to improve the Club and the
wider community over the coming years
and I for one believe this club will be playing
Premier League football within five years
regardless of today’s outcome, such is the
determination, ambition, and affection that Mr
Wagner and the ownership have for not only
the football club but Birmingham as a city;
Whilst there are a few different
permutations that can play out over the
course of the day, we as a group - older or
younger, experienced or inexperienced -
will need to step up and bring the very best
version of ourselves. If we do that then
collectively we are more than capable of
getting the result we require but it is vital that
we leave everything we have out on that pitch
this afternoon and back ourselves to go toe to
toe with a very good team.
I think you will agree what has improved
under Gary is our defensive structure and
one goal conceded in the last three games is
a good indication of that. I am a firm believer
that whilst an attractive style of play is good
you must have solid foundations to build from.
We have added that solidity and, hopefully,
today we will add goals to go with it.
The threat of relegation on the final day
is not something I have experienced but is
a situation the Club has found itself in too
many times previously and it is paramount
that when things go in our favour today this
season is the last of those and a culture of
positivity and success becomes the new
normal and standards are set around that.
Finally, today’s game also marks another
sell-out in B9 and I cannot understate the
importance of your support throughout
the season. Home and away the loyalty
and numbers you bring is incredible. I think
our best performances have come against
Sunderland, Preston North End and Coventry
City at home and it is no surprise that those
three games were also sell outs. So do what
you do best Bluenoses and be that extra body
and that extra driving force we rely so heavily
on for one final game and KEEP RIGHT ON.
BEST MOMENTS FROM THE SEASON
AS THE MEN’S CAMPAIGN CONCLUDES WITH THE HOSTING OF NORWICH CITY AT
ST. ANDREW’S @ KNIGHTHEAD PARK THIS AFTERNOON, THE BLUES NEWS TEAM
HAVE PICKED SOME OF THEIR FAVOURITE MOMENTS FROM 2023/24.
FROM AUGUST TO MAY, IT HAS BEEN ANOTHER EVENTFUL NINE MONTHS IN THE HISTORY OF
BIRMINGHAM CITY, BUT AGAIN JOYS CAN BE FOUND AMONGST THE SORROWS IN A SEASON
WHERE A MAJOR TRANSFORMATION OF THE FOOTBALL CLUB HAS STARTED.
WELCOME BACK TO B9
The next chapter got underway in earnest as the
visit of recently relegated Leeds United proved to
be the hottest ticket in town. Everyone old and new
associated to the royal blue made the first pilgrimage
of the season, and the lucky ones even had their bar
tab footed by Chairman of the Board, Tom Wagner.
He was in attendance a month on from Knighthead’s
Birmingham City acquisition and even brought a few
friends, including Chairman of the Advisory Board, Tom
Brady. That being said, the forward vision was dosed in
moderation and time was reserved for reflection as the
Club paid its respects to the passing of its greatest-ever
player, Trevor Francis. And as the past and present
segwayed, destiny fell somewhere in the middle when
NFL fanatic Lukas Jutkiewicz blasted in a winner
from the penalty spot before marking lift-off with a
touchdown celebration.
SUPER-SUB STANSFIELD
After back-to-back wins, periods of Blues’ performance
were apologetic to the alien prospect of going three
in a row. However, nobody had told Fulham loanee Jay
Stansfield – nor the BluesTV commentary team - to rein
it in on the final Saturday of August. Just two days after
his arrival, he scored a Goal of the Month contender into
the same net he had found for his parent club two years
previous. The son of Devon took the perfect set-up touch
before stabbing a volleyed finish over the goalkeeper to
secure his place in Bluenoses’ hearts, whilst breaking
those from Plymouth Argyle – fierce rivals of Exeter City
where he had spent the previous season.
BEATING THE BAGGIES AGAIN
A West Midlands derby was an ideal occasion for
supporters to be welcomed back to the Tilton Lower
and after a swift start from West Bromwich Albion,
Birmingham City stormed to a fourth consecutive
victory in the fixture. Juninho Bacuna’s ice-cool penalty
was the perfect response to a difficult week for the
Curacao international and the game was totally turned
on its head when Dion Sanderson nodded in from Cody
Drameh’s far-post pick-out. The result still needed
firming up as the second-half wore on and, thankfully,
a Brummie was on hand to do just that. Gary Gardner’s
sweeping free kick kissed the crossbar on its way in and
showed that the newly installed safe standing was up to
the acid test of ‘scenes’.
BLUE NOSE DAY
Blues’ last home game before Christmas versus Sky Bet
Championship leaders Leicester City took on greater
significance as, on the back of the Birmingham City
Foundation’s launch, the Club hosted the inaugural Blue
Nose Day. An occasion enhanced by the presence of the
Sky Sports cameras, pre-match pyrotechnics and a light
show, supporters played their part by purchasing novelty
‘blue noses’ to, in partnership with the Birmingham
Children’s Trust, help provide 11,500 presents for
children in care across the city. On the field, a Jordan
James double, as his rich vein of form continued,
was not enough to avoid defeat, but a huge win was
achieved away from the 90 minutes, with more than
£75,000 raised to support the gift of giving campaign to
positively impact lives in the local community.
BLUES MAKE NEW KOREA MOVE
The Men’s First Team made history in January by
signing their first South Korean player. International
Paik Seung-ho, a scorer against Brazil at the 2022 FIFA
Men’s World Cup, was secured until June 2026, as Blues
fought off competition for his signature from other
interested parties both in England and on the continent.
As impressive as the recruitment of a former Barcelona
academy star, were the numbers racked up on social
media. A single tweet teasing his arrival with a playful
parody of the logo of K-pop band BTS garnered 3.3 million
impressions and was (by most people) very well received!
OPERATION SELL-OUT SUNDERLAND
Tom Wagner asked, Birmingham answered. With the
entirety of the Stadium now operational, the Chairman
of the Board issued a call to action for February’s
hosting of Tony Mowbray’s former club, Sunderland,
to be an all-ticket fixture. Supporters duly responded
and for the first time in nearly four years, B9 was full
to the brim for what proved to be a day to remember.
Even a half-time deficit failed to stop the sounds of St.
Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park from inspiring a secondhalf
turnaround. An assault on the senses stole one of
the Black Cats’ lives. Jordan James slammed in the
leveller before Koji Miyoshi snuck a winner over the line
to spark what the man from Japan labelled as “Limbs”.
EASTER MONDAY DOUBLE HEADER
You would have been an April fool to miss this one in
the sunshine. Football and music collided in perfect
harmony when the league clash against Preston North
End was followed by UB40, whose tunes have often
been the soundtrack to terrace chants. Premiering
their new album, UB45, the legendary group performed
from a pre-built stage in the Gil Merrick Lower. The
Birmingham band kicked off their 2024 World Tour
following full-time on the pitch where Gary Rowett’s
team, thanks to Jay Stansfield’s winning note, had
proven the perfect support act.
PUTTING THE WHEELS IN MOTION
In the early hours of Tuesday 9 April, it was confirmed
that Knighthead, in their continued commitment to
Blues, had acquired the 48-acre former Wheels site in
Bordesley Park, East Birmingham: A key step toward
creating a vibrant Sports Quarter. This announcement
not only captured the imagination of Bluenoses but
piqued the interest of the whole region when it was
qualified with proposed investment sky-scraping into
the billions and the generation of 3,000 local jobs. It was
quickly news that then jetted itself around the globe, as
at that evening’s Blues
Open House, Ambition, Tom Wagner outlined a desire
to bring major sport and entertainment events to the
development’s centrepiece, a new, world-class stadium.
WEST MIDLANDS BRAGGING RIGHTS
There was a sense of trepidation heading into this local
affair and even putting current form aside, Coventry
City had a long-term stranglehold on league meetings
which made the chance to claim a valuable three points
seemingly a tall order. Not one bit of that carried any
credence, though, once the first whistle had peeped and
the hosts got about the Sky Blues, scoring twice before
the interval to have the second-largest home crowd of
the season fizzing. The cherry on the top came when
Tyler Roberts’ wicked pass supplied Jay Stansfield to
add number three and beyond doubt end a 13-year wait
for success in the fixture.
lues under-18s
Another day,
another scholar
It is 8.30am at the Knighthead Performance
Centre and the Under-18s are ready for work. The
Professional Development League North title
may have been wrapped up in April, by a 15-point
margin, and a home play-off secured, but for the
team that finished second bottom last season,
reaching top spot is not the summit.
All 14 second-year scholars, 12 outfielders and two
goalkeepers, were told last month that they would be
offered their first professional contracts. The news
broken to the players by Academy Technical Director,
Mike Rigg, was relayed at the recent Open House
and drew audible reactions of shock from some of
those in attendance. It was a statement, but not a
distraction and although confidence levels are high,
the focus has not been broken.
Martyn Olorenshaw
Tuesday’s double training sessions remain a
permanent fixture on the schedule, so Blues News
dusted off their alarm clock to catch up with Lead
Coach, Martyn Olorenshaw and a couple of the
players, where talk of the play-offs widened the eyes.
Either Bristol City or Charlton Athletic will likely lie
in wait, eager to take a scalp but as Cameron Eubank
explained, Blues have no intentions of kicking their
winning habit anytime soon.
“We will see how it goes, I think we will pull through
and show what we are capable of, get the wins going
and become play-off champions.”
The midfielder used to play for another of
Birmingham’s academies but made the switch at
Under-13s.
“If you really want something; you will get there and
there is no doubt. 100%.”
He is sitting opposite teammate Frank Tattum in
the newly appointed and impressively reimagined
Wast Hills canteen. The striker has 19 goals ‘so far’ he
emphasises this campaign, wanting to add more in
Blues’ bid to become the national champions.
“I have played at St. Andrew’s a couple of times
before with the Under-21s but never with the Under-
18s because we played away games in the FA Youth
Cup, but we are all looking forward to it as a group.
“Everyone has performed well; we have performed
as a team and people have had individual success out
of it too as well as our success as a team.”
16 | BLUES NEWS BIRMINGHAM CITY V NORWICH CITY

“I think the team have played exceptionally to get us
to the milestone of play-offs, I am just delighted.”
Turning back the dial is worth the time. Last term’s
academy season was a disrupted one and for the
current second years, it was a bumpy one, with the
impact of injuries and players being fast-tracked into
the Under-21s meaning results were not attractive.
However, stemming from an uber-positive
pre-season trip to Scotland, a fierce internal spirit
has been forged. Overnight stays for certain away
fixtures and team socials have injected extra doses
of camaraderie along the way. And as Olorenshaw
is eager to explain, the scholarship is a two-year
programme by design, not fault.
“Even though the surface level last year was
difficult and there were some challenges and there
were lots of things going on that were out of our
control, you hope that the work that you deliver over
time sees the players progress. I think what has
been slightly different this year is that we have had a
slightly more settled squad to work with every week
and on a playing basis.
“It has been a fantastic year, the group has been
really tight knit, both the first and second years. I
think it is really nice that we build something like that.
They love being around each other, they love playing
with each other, love playing for each other, and I
think they like being around the staff as well!
“The way we practice every day and the
environment that we want to create for them to
come into, it is a working environment. We have
really pushed them and have been very consistent on
the grass daily, which, hopefully, then leads into the
games and I feel they have reciprocated that.”
The themes of application and workrate are
recurring in conversation and Eubank, who at times
has worn the armband this season, carries it further.
Leading the way has made Birmingham the
team to be shot at. They have, though, embraced
such pressure and he references March’s win over
Cameron Eubank
Frank Tattum
Barnsley, a victory that avenged defeat in the reverse
fixture.
“I think we have shown that if you put your mind to it
and you apply yourself daily, it shows what you can do
on the pitch, and we are showing what a Birmingham
City team can do. As a unit, we know that if we work
hard as a group we can go and beat anyone.
“With Barnsley, I think as that was top versus top,
we saw that as a rivalry, even passed down through
leagues before – Barnsley are a top team. We played
very well, and, in the end, it was a comfortable win for
us, I really enjoyed it.”
Regardless of how 2023/24 ends, it will go down
in the history books. The 14 pro-deals awarded are
more than double last year’s count and Olorenshaw,
Tattum and Eubank, in that order, sign off by recalling
the feeling when Rigg made so many dreams come
true.
“They probably half-guessed it but likely did not
realise that the whole group were going to get it. So,
I think there was a little bit of everything in the room,
there was relief, happiness, some of them were a
little bit like: ‘Is this happening?’.”
“It was brilliant for all of us, growing up and playing
with your teammates all the way through and
knowing that they all got professional contracts out
of it, there really is no better feeling.”
“It was great for the team knowing we’re going to be
here for a little bit longer together and seeing each
other’s faces again, it makes me happy.”
David Wagner’s side will hope they can reach the
capital once again later this month, though, to propel
themselves back to English football’s top table,
especially with Suffolk rivals Ipswich Town on the
brink of automatic promotion.
The Yellows require just a draw from this afternoon’s
visit to St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park to be
mathematically certain of finishing in the play-offs.
West Bromwich Albion need to beat Preston North
End, while Hull City in seventh require victory over
Plymouth Argyle and an eight-goal swing to remove
Norwich from the play-off equation should they lose.
NORWICH CITY
CANARIES PLAY-OFF PERCHED
Yet with Leeds United or Southampton likely playoff
opponents in the coming weeks, boss Wagner will
demand a more ruthless cutting edge if his side are to
achieve an eighth promotion out of the second tier.
The Canaries recorded 27 efforts at goal last time
out against mid-table Swansea City, but were held to
a 2-2 draw. The result coming on the back of an offcolour
display against Bristol City a fortnight ago.
The German tactician knows heading into the playoffs
with momentum is critical if they are to achieve
their lofty ambitions, telling the Pink Un: “Today we
were back to our normal, very aggressive levels.
The players have shown a lot of desire, hunger and
intensity. We defended with a high line and won a lot
of turnovers.
“We created great opportunities, but we were not
clinical and ruthless in the opponents’ box. This is
why we didn’t get what we deserved in this game - we
did not use our chances and were not clinical. But
the players executed the game plan. It was a good
performance and sometimes you don’t get what you
deserve. We will take a point and move on.
“We’ve all seen how difficult it is in the
Championship, especially at this stage of the season,
to win or even to collect points. We have done this
consistently and the players have got the rewards
and that’s why we are where we are in the table at the
minute.”
Usually finding the back of the net has not been
a concern for City this season. Only Middlesbrough
and title winners Leicester City have scored more
on their travels than Norwich’s 36 goals, with a
trio all contributing double-figure tallies. USA
international Josh Sargent is top scoring again with
16, homegrown prodigy Jonathan Rowe has a dozen
league goals to his credit and deep-lying playmaker
Gabriel Sara has provided 13 goals for the cause.
At the back, though, they have been exposed too
often, with 63 goals conceded in 45 games the most
of any of the division’s top nine sides. Over the past
three fixtures Wagner has not tinkered with his
backline, with Scotland international Angus Gunn,
son of former City icon Bryan, the undisputed No.1
with 11 clean sheets. Former Luton Town and AFC
Bournemouth promotion winner Jack Stacey has
been a dynamic option at right-back, with Sam
McCallum on the opposite side. Commanding centreback
Shane Duffy, who has 60 caps for the Republic
of Ireland, has helped lead the side in the absence of
captain Grant Hanley. The former Brighton & Hove
Albion centre-back has been alongside the reliable
Ben Gibson, who was part of Middlesbrough’s side
that lost to Norwich in the Play-Off Final of 2015.
Further defensive options include former Stoke
City captain Danny Batth, Greece international leftback
Dimitris Giannoulis and teenager Kellen Fisher.
Shielding the rearguard has been a responsibility
league ever-present Kenny McLean has relished
alongside Marcelino Nunez. The Chile international
has impressed with his tenacious approach and
scored April’s winner in the East Anglian derby. Dane
Jacob Sorensen and the dynamic Liam Gibbs can
also be relied upon in centre-midfield roles.
While leading marksman Sargent often spearheads
a four-pronged attack, the trio behind him are
interchangeable. Brazilian Sara is the creatorin-chief,
often utilised through the middle, with
widemen Christian Fassnacht and Borja Sainz
flanking. Spaniard Sainz has shown his qualities
with eight goals in a debut campaign since signing
from Turkish side Giresunspor, while Switzerland
international Fassnacht arrived with UEFA
Champions League pedigree from Young Boys.
Although former Blues loanee Onel Hernandez
has been absent since March, forward Sydney van
Hooijdonk has provided an impactful option from
off the bench and the ever-green targetman Ashley
Barnes, a three-time promotion winner at Burnley,
has had his most productive campaign since 2019.
NORWICH CITY
KEY THREE
Defensive-midfield | DOB: 8 January 1992
The combative midfield anchor has been in imperious form this season for the Canaries, as
his diligence and spadework in the engine room allows the club’s creatives the chance to
stay further forward.
The 32-year-old’s hard graft throughout an ever-present league campaign has not gone
unnoticed though as he recently won the club’s Player of the Season gong.
The former Aberdeen man relocated to Norfolk in 2017 and has been involved in two
successful promotion campaigns. Boss David Wagner is hoping that this season will end
with a hat-trick of elevations for his Scotland international, telling the Norwich Evening
News: “He has been at this football club a while. Maybe he has improved? I can only judge
from the time I’ve been here with him, but what I can say is that he’s an outstanding athlete,
a top trainer, and is super competitive. He is one of, if not the, most reliable player we have.”
17. GABRIEL SARA
Attacking-midfielder | DOB: 26 June 1999
Norwich City’s creator-in-chief has had a phenomenal campaign and received
recognition with selection to the EFL’s Championship Team of the Season.
The £6 million signing from Sao Paulo in 2022 registered his 14th goal in the most
recent 2-2 draw with Swansea City - a ferocious long-distance strike - for a sixth goal
in his last 10 games.
The inventive 24-year-old, who was also on target in September’s reverse fixture
against Blues, has provided a dozen league assists this term as opposition defences
struggle to cope with his quick feet and even sharper footballing brain.
The league ever-present was Norwich’s 2022/23 Player of the Year but is confident
he can accomplish more in NR1, telling the Norwich Evening News: “I’m really enjoying
this season. I can give more for the fans, more for the club, and hopefully we can have
more happiness in the future.”
9. JOSH SARGENT
Although the USA international missed three months of the campaign with an ankle
Striker | DOB: 20 February 2000
ligament injury, he is still leading the club’s scoring charts for a second successive season.
The Missouri-born finisher has registered 13 goals since New Year’s Day to take his total
for the campaign to 16, three more than he managed last season when he also collected
the club’s Golden Boot award. An £8 million acquisition from Werder Bremen in 2021, the
energetic 24-year-old has kept Norwich City on an upward trajectory with his finishing
prowess and registered his 55th club goal last time out against Swansea City.
He has blossomed alongside strike partner Ashley Barnes and Wagner commented last
month: “They have good harmony and obviously good players like to play with each other.
This is exactly the case. I would not swap our strikers with any others in this division.
They are able to create, they are a danger for goals and they feel the responsibility for the
defensive work as well.”
A DAY TO REMEMBER
NORWICH CITY
Xabi Alonso and his Bayer Leverkusen side
might have made it look easy this season,
but over the last 50 years, beating Bayern
Munich has been anything but. Serial winners at
home and in Europe, seeing their name coming up
on the fixture list, particularly if you were heading
for the Olympiastadion to play them, was cause
enough for panic to set in. Yet on Tuesday 19
October 1993, Norwich City taught them a lesson
on their own pitch, a real day to remember.
This was the Canaries’ first foray into European
competition, the ban on English clubs that followed
the Heysel disaster having denied them that
opportunity after they had won the League Cup in
1985. They saw off Vitesse Arnhem with a 3-0 firstleg
victory in the First Round, but on being paired
with Bayern in round two, the general consensus
was that their passports would not get another
airing beyond that.
That was to underestimate a side that had
finished third in the inaugural Premier League and
were sitting second in the table as they set off for
Germany. Significantly, away from home they were
still unbeaten in the league in 1993/94, while Bayern
Munich had never lost to an English side on home
soil. Irresistible force? Meet the immovable object.
After the game, Bayern were attacked by no
less an authority than ‘Kicker’ magazine for
disrespecting Norwich, but while that may be
true, nothing should take away from an exemplary
European performance. With Ian Culverhouse
as sweeper behind a back three, Norwich were
disciplined and organised while manager Mike
24 | BLUES NEWS BIRMINGHAM CITY V NORWICH CITY

Walker had spotted an unlikely weakness in FIFA
Men’s World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus, who had
dropped back from midfield to operate as sweeper.
Walker’s analysis proved correct after 15 minutes
when a Rob Newman ball forward was headed
away by Matthaus, out of position and off balance
as he ran backwards to try to compensate. He
made a weak connection, compounding it with the
schoolboy howler of putting the ball back across
goal. It fell perfectly for Jeremy Goss, following in
at the edge of the penalty area. Catching the ball on
the volley, his connection was perfect, and the shot
flew past Raimond Aumann in the Bayern goal.
On the half hour, Norwich doubled the lead. Ian
Crook floated in a free kick that Chris Sutton and
Oliver Kreuzer jumped for, but missed. That caught
the Bayern full-back Jorginho off guard and as
he hesitated, Mark Bowen stole in behind him and
directed a header back across goal and into the far
corner. “Fantasy football”, as John Motson dubbed it
in commentary.
Jorginho began to atone for his error five minutes
before the break, firing in a cross for Christian
Nerlinger who got up to nod the ball beyond Bryan
Gunn to halve the arrears. With all the second-half
to come, the home crowd began to feel that normal
service had been resumed.
It had not. Bayern were better in the second 45,
but Norwich rose to the challenge. For the most
part, they sat deep and kept the hosts at bay and
when the German side did create an opening, Gunn
was in magnificent form. One superb save, from
Adolfo Valencia in the 75th minute, was made with
an unconventional part of the anatomy, but after
wiping away the tears, Gunn and his defenders
saw out the remainder of the game in surprising
comfort as Bayern hammered their heads against
a yellow wall.
There was still a return leg to come of course,
but even in defeat, still Bayern showed Norwich no
respect, Matthaus dismissing them as, “A nothing
little city where the people just eat mustard.”
Clearly there were none of Delia Smith’s cookbooks
on the World Cup winner’s kitchen shelf.
When Valencia scored for Bayern after just four
minutes at Carrow Road, a lesser side might have
panicked. Not Norwich City. Five minutes into the
second-half, Goss levelled things up on the night,
putting his side ahead on aggregate. They did not
lose that lead again, advancing to the Third Round.
The German side were served a healthy helping
of humble pie. Whether Matthaus took his with
mustard is unknown.
With thanks to Norwich City and Alex Beadnell for
the images.
INTERVIEW
KESHI
ANDERSON
ANDERSON’S COUNSEL
After 4,050 minutes of football – plus plenty
of added time – it all comes down to this.
One last fixture, Blues versus Norwich City,
an afternoon where the Club’s immediate destiny is
decided.
While life might have been altogether simpler this
afternoon had Birmingham City taken six points from
the games at Rotherham United and Huddersfield
Town, it could be that the two that were earned will
prove vital if they can be backed up by three more this
afternoon.
Certainly, there are reasons for optimism coming
into this afternoon’s game, not least by casting the
mind back to the last game here at St. Andrew’s
@ Knighthead Park when Coventry City were
comprehensively beaten, 3-0.
The scoring that day was opened by an own goal from
Bobby Thomas, but it was the work of Keshi Anderson
that forced it and he backed that up by setting up
Koji Myoshi for the opening goal at Huddersfield last
Saturday.
After missing a three-month chunk of the season
through injury before struggling to get back into the
side on a regular basis, Anderson has returned to the
starting XI with a bang in recent weeks. His form is one
of the reasons that Birmingham City can go into the
game with genuine optimism, so Blues News took the
chance to catch up with him ahead of this final game
of the season.
Talking about his arrival last summer, his exciting
early season form, working to come back from injury
and the need for everyone, on the pitch and in the
stands, to keep right on until the final whistle this
afternoon…
Thanks for giving Blues News some of your time
during what is such an important week, Keshi. Can
we start by going back to last summer, when you
came to Birmingham City after you left Blackpool?
Even at 28-years-old and with plenty of experience
behind you, having to negotiate a trial period before
confirming your deal here must have been a tough
process?
It was just a procedure the Club needed to go through
more than anything, just because of my injury history,
which is understandable. It comes with the game.
Clubs and fans don’t want people coming into their club
and not earning their wage. It was just one of those
things that needed to be done to keep myself where I
feel I belong, which is in the Championship. This is the
level where I should be playing. Maybe it was a tough
pill to swallow because I’d got 250-odd games behind
me and realistically, at 28, I should be in my prime. But
it was just because of injury circumstances last season
with Blackpool, and I just had to accept it as that.
As fans, we do not always take into account what a
precarious job football can be, especially away from
the Premier League. It can be a different life in the
Football League?
The Premier League is a different thing, but whatever
level, I’ve always felt that being a footballer is a massive
BCFC.COM BLUES NEWS | 29

privilege. We live a very different life to the average
person. Even when I was down in League Two, I always
felt quite privileged because of the way your life is in
this job, and what football has given me.
You came in for pre-season, impressed in the
friendlies and then signed for the Club. Once the
season started, things went well for you and for
the team. Everything looked rosy around August,
September time.
Things were looking good. It was looking the way
the Club wanted it to go with the new owners and
all of that. It was good for me to be within the team
and playing week in, week out, but it was also tough
because as much as I was loving playing every week,
coming off a difficult season with injury last year, I was
playing probably a bit too much. That resulted in the
injury at the back end of September, which halted my
progress.
As a team, we started off very well. We were very
together as a team and we were working hard, putting
together results, not just against the teams in and
around us, but there were things like the home game
against Leeds in the second game of the season,
we won at Bristol City, we had the West Brom derby
game at home, where we put in an unbelievable
performance just before the international break.
It was frustrating with me getting injured at the end
of September. I had a three-month period out, which
was obviously a while away from the team, and while
that was happening, we changed the manager too, so
it was a very different situation when I was fit again.
Having the three months out injured, doing your
rehab can be a lonely road. When everybody else was
out training or playing in games, did you find it hard to
feel really involved?
I think it’s half and half. I’ve had my fair share of
injuries, unfortunately, so I know what you need to
do to come back from them, I know how you need
to think. I see it as time when I need to do whatever
it takes to come back stronger and to use that time
to make sure that I was in the best position possible
when I did come back.
Unfortunately, we had a few other players injured
while I was doing my rehab. Tyler was injured while I
was out, Ethan was injured for maybe three or four
weeks while I was injured, Kevin Long was injured with
me, so there were players in and around the gym and
we tended to stick together a bit more when the boys
were out training.
When they’re travelling to games, obviously you
don’t see them as much, but I wouldn’t necessarily say
you don’t feel a part of it because week in, week out
you’re watching the games. If it’s a home game, you’re
in the stadium, if it’s an away game, you tend to watch
it when you’re at home. You still feel a part of it, but,
obviously, it’s frustrating that you can’t contribute on
the pitch.
In recent weeks, Gary Rowett has shown plenty of
faith in you, and you have really responded to that
with some good performances.
With Gary coming in, he’s put that faith in me and
given me the responsibility to be the kind of player that
I am, to lead the boys around me, to be talkative on the
pitch and to then allow my ability to shine through. It’s
frustrating that before that, I hadn’t played as much,
because I was coming into these last five, six games of
the season with not many minutes behind me. So, to
be at that top level of real match sharpness, it’s hard.
The Gaffer’s putting a lot of trust in me to do the job
that’s needed and, hopefully, I can repay him for having
that trust, repay my teammates for being patient with
me because I have, obviously, missed quite a chunk of
the season, and most of all, repay the fans.
You saw in the Coventry game, I had to come off
in the 70th minute, which to be fair, helps the team
because you get fresh legs on, but it shows that my
match sharpness and match fitness isn’t at 100%
when it would have been if I’d been given the time
under other managers to play.
Since I’ve been back, there’s been one win and two
draws. I’ve got two goal contributions in the three
games I’ve played. I feel like I could have had an assist
at Rotherham, maybe could have even had a goal
there, but their ‘keeper made a decent save.
I was pleased to have an assist in the game at
Huddersfield last weekend, but it turned into a
frustrating afternoon because I felt in the first half,
we dominated them. We limited them to two chances,
and I thought we were very, very good, so it was
very frustrating as a team to come out and concede
straight away in the way that we did. The goal was
from absolutely nothing and it shaped the second half
in their favour, it just turned the whole nature of the
game. We’d talked in the dressing room about if we
came out correctly after half-time, we could put them
to the sword, but we didn’t, and those are moments
that change games.
You mentioned being a talker on the pitch and in
training. That bit of experience that players like you
can bring is such an important element at this time of
the season, when the pressure is really on.
I think we have a good mix here. If you look at our
starting line-up for the last three games, it’s been
quite an experienced team. We’ve got Ivan (Sunjic),
myself, Krystian (Bielik), John (Ruddy), Koji (Miyoshi)
who is 27 and he’s played a lot of football overseas.
Paik (Seung-ho) is an international player, he’s played
in the World Cup.
30 | BLUES NEWS BIRMINGHAM CITY V NORWICH CITY

BCFC.COM BLUES NEWS | 31

With that experience comes a comfort in being
able to say something in the correct way on the pitch,
being able to motivate the other guys on the pitch,
which I feel we have lacked a bit through the season.
When things aren’t going right, to be able to keep
asking someone to dig in and to do the hard
yards, maybe that’s something that we have
missed.
There is absolute clarity coming into this
game, win or bust. You know exactly what
is needed. Does that clear the mind?
We go into every game, whether it’s the
Rotherham game, the Huddersfield game,
the Leicester game, the Coventry game,
we always go into it believing we can win.
That is always the aim. We know this is a
must-win game and we know it’s do or die
for our Championship status. The boys
will be right up for it.
It is going to be some atmosphere at
St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park this
afternoon. The big thing is that, no
matter what, the supporters and the
players have to stick together right until
the final whistle.
A game of football is swings and
roundabouts, you have good periods and
difficult periods in any 90 minutes. We were
on top for the first 45 minutes at Huddersfield
and we ended up scoring in the last minute of the
half when I set up Koji for the goal. All that hard work,
but we finally scored in the 45th minute. That was a
sucker punch to Huddersfield right before half-time,
which in hindsight probably worked in their benefit
because they came out firing. You have that in games.
I imagine Norwich will have good possession
at times because they’re a team that works off
possession. We’re a team that defends from shape
and we’re good on the counter, but we can also
have periods of the game where we’re good on
the ball and keep possession. I think it’ll be a
good game, it’s a good match-up. It’s about
nullifying them and then doing what
we’re good at in our attacking phases.
Although we would all prefer to be
at the other end of the table, this
game offers you all the chance
to be heroes. If you look back to
2017 when Blues won the last two
games to stay up, those are games that
live in the memory of Bluenoses, that
make history for the Club. That is the
opportunity you have in this game.
It’s not the position that we want to be
in, it’s not the position that we expected
to be in, but it’s the reality of it. We
understand the responsibility we have
today. We’ll go into this game looking to
do everything we can to put in the right
performance and to get the three
points that will, hopefully, save us.
That’s all that matters, finding that
win this afternoon.
Supporters’ corner
THROUGHOUT THE 2023/24 SEASON, BLUES NEWS
WILL BE HEARING FROM THE STANDS.
or the final Supporters’ Corner of the season, Blues News profiles legendary Blues
fan, Carol Butcher.
F ‘Scarf Lady’, as Carol is affectionately known, started regularly attending matches at
St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park at 13-years-old. Over the years, she started collecting Club
scarves, each season buying the latest design to add to the set. And, setting her apart from
most supporters, she wore them all.
Many long-time Bluenoses will recall the sight of Carol walking up the Coventry Road
draped in what seemed like hundreds of scarves and taking her regular seat in the
Paddocks to watch home games. In recent years, B9 has not seen as much of her, so it was
time to check in with her close friend Tracy Hemming for an update.
“Carol is well. She’s missing the Blues desperately, as she’s in a care home now outside of
Birmingham. She sings about Blues every day and she loves keeping track of all the results.”
Scarf Lady has seen it all over the years, her fondest memories being spent watching the
late, great Trevor Francis. She was recognised for her decades of support with the 2015/16
Supporter of the Season Award, receiving a rousing ovation from the crowd. Her last visit
to B9 was back in the 2018/19 season, when the Club provided transport for her to visit from
her care home, but she is no longer able to spend as much time away from the home as it
takes to attend a fixture.
Tracy added: “1000s of Blues fans love Carol. So, it’s nice for her to know that the Club still
thinks of her. We’ll get her a copy of this programme, and it will be her prized possession!”
Keep Right On, Carol!
PFA Community Champion Awards 2023/24
Ethan Laird and Christie Harrison-Murray have
been named the 2023/24 PFA Community
Champions for their contributions to work in
the community.
Both the right-back and midfielder have played a
crucial part in the Foundation’s work this campaign
by attending and engaging in numerous initiatives
including the Foundation’s chaperone programme,
Step Together, workshops in local schools,
World Book Day, girls’ football initiatives and the
Birmingham City Foundations grassroots football
programmes.
Laird said “I’m really pleased to be nominated for the
PFA Community Champion of the Year award. I believe
that community is a huge part of why we play football,
so it is always good to give back. I am just delighted to
be able to do that!”
Harrison-Murray was equally delighted to be
nominated and said: “The work the Club as a whole
does in the community is huge and it’s so important
that we connect in a positive way with as many people
across Birmingham. I’m honoured to be named as PFA
Community Champion for Birmingham City Women.”
A huge congratulations to both players on receiving
these awards and a thank you to both teams for their
continued support of the Foundation.
Birmingham City Foundation launch
Hadrian’s Wall Challenge 2024
ollowing the success of last year’s Three-Peaks
Challenge, the Birmingham City Foundation are
Flooking to go one step further, with their biggest
endurance event ever.
As the clocks tick over to the early hours of Saturday
15 June, staff and supporters will begin walking the
entire 84-mile length of Hadrian’s Wall, from the
Cumbrian coast to Tyneside, following the original route
that was laid down by the emperor Hadrian to mark the
north-western frontier of the Roman Empire in 122 AD.
This walk will see the teams leave Bowness-in-
Solway, before moving east past Carlisle, trekking
through the remote and rugged wilds of Northumbria,
and finishing at the historical Roman site of
Segedunum in Wallsend on the Saturday 15 June.
The Foundation will be attempting to complete the
task within 48 hours – and in so doing, hopes to raise
£40,000 in sponsorship that can be invested back into
youth projects and residential holiday opportunities for
disadvantaged children and young people in the local
area. Last year’s fabulous fundraising helped provide
amazing and free summer experiences of a lifetime
for inner-city children, which would not have been
possible without donations from supporters.
Again, Bluenoses everywhere will help the
Foundation smash their target, so they can keep on
making memories.
Text ‘KRO’ to 70560 to donate £5.
BLUES WOMEN’S
SEASON REVIEW
AUGUST
A summer of change, which included the
appointment of Hope Powell CBE as Women’s
Technical Director, brought renewed optimism
for a second season in the Barclays Women’s
Championship. After missing out on promotion by
a point in the previous campaign, Darren Carter
once again led the charge as his side headed to
Lancashire and Ewood Park for an opening-day
meeting with Blackburn Rovers. But the start was
far from ideal as Megan Hornby secured three
points for the hosts.
SEPTEMBER
The first home game of the campaign saw
Crystal Palace leave with the win at St. Andrew’s @
Knighthead Park, despite a late consolation from
Louise Quinn. Blues got their first point on the
board the following weekend with a goalless draw
against Lewes. Another home defeat followed at
the hands of Charlton Athletic, leaving the team
with plenty of work to do heading into the first
international break.
OCTOBER
A corner was turned at the beginning of October,
though, and the first win came on the road at
50 | BLUES NEWS BIRMINGHAM CITY V NORWICH CITY

Southampton. A Libby Smith brace helped Blues
on their way to a 1-3 victory in Hampshire. The
next weekend, a late goal from Captain, Christie
Harrison-Murray, secured a point at home to
Sunderland. There was then an opening FA Women’s
Continental League Cup group stage defeat to
Brighton & Hove Albion that was sandwiched by a
scintillating performance on the road at Sheffield
United, as Gemma Lawley, Martha Harris, Lucy
Quinn and Remi Allen netted with no Blades
response. A week later, Blues put five past Watford
in B9, with Ivana Fuso, Lily Agg and Ellie Mason all
scoring their first goals after summer moves.
NOVEMBER
Charlie Devlin’s first-half double secured victory
against Reading at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park
to begin the month, before an early Gemma Lawley
header, who later went on to win Player of the
Month, was enough to muster three points against
London City Lionesses. A fifth Championship
maximum in a row followed with a comprehensive
3-1 success over Durham as Jade Pennock scored
her first of the season. An early group stage exit
from the Conti Cup was, unfortunately, confirmed
before November was out following a single-goal
defeat at Charlton.
DECEMBER
The final calendar month of 2023 started with
Blues entering the Third Round of the Adobe
Women’s FA Cup, and late injury time goals from
Choe Yu-ri and Fuso helped to advance past MK
Dons. Then an outstanding performance away at
Sunderland, winning 0-3, put Carter’s side top of
the tree heading into the Christmas break.
JANUARY
2024 started how the year before had ended –
victory in the FA Cup. Extra-time goals from Claudia
BCFC.COM BLUES NEWS | 51

Walker and Jade Moore secured progression to
the Fifth Round. The Conti Cup ended with an
impressive showing against Barclays Women’s
Super League opponents, West Ham United, as a
goal of the season contender from Harris helped
Blues on their way to a 2-1 success. A wonder strike
from South Korean midfielder Cho So-hyun was
then enough to see off London City in B9 to make it
seven league wins on the bounce.
FEBRUARY
Stereotypically the month of love, February,
proved to be a heart-breaking one for Blues. Defeat
at bottom side Watford was followed by an FA Cup
exit at the hands of Leicester City. The Saints then
avenged the loss from earlier in the season to
secure a 1-2 win in the Second City.
MARCH
Blackburn were the first opponent in March, and
despite dominating all the stats, Blues were unable
to break down the stubborn Lancashire outfit.
Lessons were learnt three days later, though, as an
Agg brace helped to put four past the Royals. The
three-game week concluded with another clean
sheet, this time against Lewes at St. Andrew’s @
Knighthead Park. A goal in each half from Devlin
and Walker securing maximum points. Another loss
against the Addicks all but ended Blues’ hopes of
promotion.
APRIL
Carter departed in the final international break
of the season, and Assistant Head Coach, Emily
Simpkins, led the team out against Crystal Palace
where the visitors suffered defeat to the new
league leaders. The exciting appointment of young,
progressive coach Head Coach, Amy Merricks,
was announced in the following days, and she got
off to the best possible start. A record attendance
of 3,101 watched on as Agg’s finish on the stroke
of half-time made it a winning beginning for
the 30-year-old. A final day trip to Durham was
decided by a header from Wildcats’ captain Sarah
Wilson to round off Blues’ second season in the
Championship.
ATTIRED &
WEARY
AIDED BY THEIR PERSONAL COLLECTIONS, CHRIS DUNN AND ANDY TUDOR TALK
ABOUT THE MANY QUIRKS AND NUANCES OF BLUES’ KITS OVER THE YEARS.
Nobody wanted it to come to this but, as we go into
today’s nerve-jangling season finale, we cannot say
we have not been here before.
Boasting “more escapes than Houdini”, Blues have
avoided relegation by virtue of a last-day reprieve on
no fewer than 10 occasions since 1964.
A nervy start saw Dave Stringer give the already
relegated Canaries an early lead, but two quickfire
goals from Bob Hatton and Kenny Burns, just before
half-time, sent the 44,000 crowd into raptures.
The second-half remained goalless to condemn
Manchester United and Southampton to the drop and
saw Blues retain their top-flight status.
Footage from The Big Match, together with Hugh
Johns’ imperious commentary, is readily available
online and captures both clubs’ classic kits in glorious
colour.
It was a similarly nervous affair 19 years later.
The 1992/93 season was tumultuous, to say the least,
with the collapse of the Kumar Brothers’ business
empire; the arrival of David Sullivan and Karren Brady;
the signing of half-a-dozen players in mid-March and
even the jettisoning of the kit mid-season!
BLUES V NORWICH, APRIL 1974
As much as we would love to cover them all, word
count limitations mean we are going to focus on
three of the more memorable close shaves.
In something of a coincidence, the first of these
took place 50 years ago last Saturday and was an
exact mirror of today’s fixture with Norwich City
travelling to St. Andrew’s.
A long hard season had seen Birmingham City in
the relegation zone for 33 consecutive weeks but, a
late rally and a resounding 4-0 victory against Queens
Park Rangers the previous Tuesday meant they went
into the fixture one place and one point above the
dreaded ‘dotted line’.
1993 SHIRT:
MOULDEN THE SAVIOUR
The upshot was that Birmingham would wear their
‘replacement’ home kit for the 11th and final time on the
last day of the season at home to Charlton Athletic.
Going into the game bottom but one, and with an
inferior goal difference to all those above them, they
knew a victory was their only hope of redemption.
Crowd congestion saw kick-off delayed by 15
minutes which, ultimately, helped Blues because
by the time Paul Moulden slotted his 55th-minute
winner past Addicks ‘keeper Mike Salmon, all other
games were edging towards their final stages.
The delay also meant that when the final whistle
was blown, there was zero doubt that Blues had
saved themselves.
Things were not quite so clear-cut 10 years ago,
though, in what was arguably the greatest escape of
them all.
A run of five consecutive defeats saw Lee Clark’s
side slip into the bottom three at just the wrong
time and meant they went into the last game of the
campaign, at Bolton Wanderers, needing to better at
least one other side’s result.
Losing 2-0 with 15 minutes to go, things looked
beyond bleak, but what happened thereafter has gone
down in legend.
Nikola Žigić halved the deficit on 78 minutes setting
up what became known as The Miracle at The Macron.
With 93 minutes on the clock, and Doncaster Rovers
losing at Leicester City, 5ft 7ins right-back Paul Caddis
rose to score the only header of his career to spark
scenes of unbridled joy behind the goal.
Caddis’ wild celebration, which saw him whip off his
yellow ‘away’ top and wave it around his head saw him
receive a booking, but that was a small price to pay for
etching his name into folklore.
So, as we go into today’s game with a feeling of déjà
vu, do we have a Hatton; Burns; Moulden or Caddis in
our ranks? Or even Mick Harford or Ché Adams who
have also come up with last-day heroics to save the
day?
We can but hope. And pray.
We would like to thank everybody who has read
this column this season and hope you have enjoyed
it. Should you have any questions relating to
Former Player Interview
NICO VAESEN
Whenever Birmingham City and Norwich
City meet, thoughts go back to that Play-
Off Final in 2002. After Darren Carter’s
decisive spot kick, goalkeeper Nico Vaesen
springs to mind next, with his save from Paul
Mulryne and the way he put doubt into the minds
of the Canaries’ penalty takers.
Blues was Nico’s second club in England, but his
experiences with Huddersfield Town paved the way
for life at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.
“I had three good years at Huddersfield. It was a
nice club as my first in England, to settle into life
and football. But after a while you make changes,
you look for new challenges.
“All the times we played with Huddersfield at St.
Andrew’s, it was one of the places I really enjoyed
because there was a good atmosphere around
the stadium. I knew it was an ambitious club, so
joining Blues was a step forward. And, of course,
Steve Bruce soon came in, and he was my manager
at Huddersfield too, the second season. We had a
really good team up there and we were top of the
league for a couple of weeks, but we slipped away
and missed out on the play-offs, so that was a sour
ending.
“I came here for the 2001/02 season. It was a very
good start, then we had a little bad spell which cost
Trevor Francis his job, but when Steve and Mark
Bowen came in, it brought a new spark. In the last
two months, we were really on top of our game, and
we made the top six, to play Millwall in the Semi-
Final. It’s not the easiest place to go! We were on
a good run, and we worked hard for each other. To
win in the last minute was incredible and we were
one game from the Premier League.
“It was a shame the Final wasn’t at Wembley.
Cardiff is a fantastic stadium, there was a great
atmosphere, but Wembley is something different.
But the only thing that mattered is winning,
wherever you play. It was about winning promotion,
and we did.”
ehind in extra-time to take the Final to penalties.
Some people will tell you that you cannot prepare
for a shootout, but that was not the attitude at
Birmingham City.
“Penalties, there’s a bit of luck, but it’s also
keeping your nerve. That’s what we did. We
practised hard. You can practise penalties, and it
can just be a laugh. Tommy Mooney pointed out
that we should practise like in a game. We all sat in
the centre circle in training and took that long walk
towards the goal, just to have a feel of it. It helped.
Those little details make a difference. We were well
prepared.
“As a goalkeeper, I wasn’t stressed, I’d got nothing
to lose. If it turns out well, you can be the hero for
a change! You keep your nerve and try to influence
the penalty taker as much as possible. Show him
you’re stronger than him, challenge him.
“There’s a certain feeling you try to put over to
the penalty takers. Paul Mulryne put the ball on the
spot, I went back to him and said, ‘Referee, the ball
isn’t on the spot.’ That’s the psychology before he
takes the kick. It worked.
“You have to make decisions. Either you stand
up, or you choose a corner, and I chose the right
one. The next one, when Sutch missed, if it was on
target, I would have saved it because I was in the
right corner. I had a good feeling that day, there
were no nerves. From my point of view, I could only
win.”
Win he did, and with a couple of additions,
Birmingham City were ready to take on the Premier
League at last.
“We bought some good players. Christophe
Dugarry was fantastic, Robbie Savage was very
good at what he did. But the most important thing
was we had a great team spirit. The camaraderie
among the players was great, we were ready to
fight for each other. We stayed up comfortably,
played some good stuff. And then there were two
wins over Aston Villa!
“Those two games, the tension, what it meant to
our supporters, it was fantastic to experience that
as a player. People talk about games you will never
forget. We will never forget the promotion game,
but those two games as well, I will never forget. I
remember postcards with ‘3-0’ and ‘2-0’ on them
being spread out in the city! It meant a lot to the
supporters to be on the winning side.”
The win across the Second City summed up the
highs and lows of professional football, for while
Nico kept a clean sheet in the 0-2 win, he also
suffered a cruciate knee injury that kept him out of
the game for nine months.
“Two days before the game, I didn’t train because
I was ill. I was still ill on the day of the game, but
the Gaffer said, ‘Come to the hotel and we’ll make
a decision there.’ I knew the Gaffer, if I was going, I
was playing! Maybe I should have protected myself
a little bit more, but it was a big game at Villa. You
want to be part of that, you don’t want to miss that,
even though you are maybe 50%.
“Everything was fine until five minutes before
the end, when it happened. It changed things for
me at Birmingham. I was happy there. My family
was happy. I knew with Maik Taylor coming in that
there was competition for places, but I had a great
understanding with him, and we competed for the
place until I eventually left.
“I had five special years at Birmingham with the
people I got to know, the warmth of the supporters,
the respect of the supporters. It is something I will
cherish for the rest of my life.”
B
MONDAY 29 APRIL | PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NORTH | ST. ANDREW’S @ KNIGHTHEAD PARK
lues Under-21s beat AFC Bournemouth in the
Professional Development League on Monday
evening.
Despite falling two goals behind, Birmingham City
impressively fought back to win the game and secure a
top-two finish in the PDL North, meaning they will progress
to the Play-Off Semi-Finals.
Two first-half strikes from the Cherries threatened to
take Birmingham City’s post-season hopes to the final
matchday, but a brace from Romelle Donovan and a coollytaken
goal from Menzi Mazwi completed the incredible
turnaround.
A huge chance fell to Blues just two minutes after
kick-off, as Harley Hamilton’s quick feet allowed him into a
position to cross for Kieran Wakefield, who headed over the
bar from just five yards out.
The visitors hit back with a big opportunity of their own
10 minutes later, when winger Michael Dacosta-Gonzalez
hit the byline and flashed a powerful strike across goal and,
BLUES: Brad Mayo, Zach Willis, Laiith Fairnie,
Tommy Fogarty, Will Burrell, Josh Home (Captain),
Menzi Mazwi, O’Shea Ellis (Femi Olofinjana 86),
Harley Hamilton (Romelle Donovan 20), Kieran
Wakefield (Ben Beresford 90+3), Junior Dixon.
Substitutes not used: Tyrese Warmington,
Cameron Eubank.
AFC BOURNEMOUTH: Callan McKenna, Finn
Tonks, Ben Greenwood, Lewis Brown (Remy Rees-
Dottin 89), Max Kinsey (Captain), Archie Harris,
Toure Williams (Jonny Stuttle 78), Dominic Sadi,
Daniel Adu-Adjei, Michael Dacosta-Gonzalez, Kian
Tydeman (Balraj Janda 69).
Substitutes not used: Mack Allan, Charlie Osbourne.
thankfully, past the far post. However, a well-worked move
followed, and Toure Williams found Daniel Adu-Adjei to fire
the away side in front.
There was a good response from Blues, though, with
early substitute Donovan stinging the gloves of visiting
goalkeeper Callan McKenna before Junior Dixon wrestled a
defender out of the way only to be tackled when pulling the
trigger.
Brad Mayo was then called into action when the
momentum shifted again, making two excellent,
one-handed stops, one to his left and one to his right.
Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do about
Dacosta-Gonzalez’s header, which sailed into the corner of
the net.
Blues started the comeback just 120 seconds into the
second-half, with Donovan scoring in successive B9
matches. The 17-year-old hit a shot from distance, which
was too hot for McKenna to handle and squirmed under him
and over the line.
Incredibly, Spooner’s side were level just a minute later.
Mazwi timed his run to perfection as he was played in behind,
and proceeded to find the perfect finish across goal via the
inside of the post.
Then came scenes of pure delight as Donovan struck
again to complete the turnaround. Similarly to the previous
goal, the forward was played in behind but this time rounded
the goalkeeper before slamming home his 11th of the season
into an empty net.
A valiant defensive effort was needed to stifle the visitors’
following attacks, but Blues held firm to round off an
entertaining game at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.
Speaking to BluesTV post-match, Under-21s Head Coach,
Spooner, was brimming with pride at his team’s comeback
victory.
“It was some evening! We knew that we would make
the play-offs with a win so we made sure to ramp up the
intensity for the players, get them used to playing with a bit
of pressure. Tonight they showed us they can handle that
pressure.
“The first-half was poor and when that happens you need
a huge response, which we certainly had. To do it against a
very good Bournemouth side, who are going for play-offs
themselves, was terrific.
“I am very proud of the lads, it is like a family here. We lost
a few players to injury and loan in January, but that has given
the opportunity to players who were not starting, who have
done very well.”
The Under-21s are back in action when they visit South
Wales to take on Swansea City at the Swansea.com Stadium
on Friday 10 May, kick-off 2pm.
SATURDAY 27 APRIL | PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NORTH | UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
lues Under-18s drew against Watford in the
Professional Development League on Saturday
afternoon.
Birmingham City played out a goalless stalemate at
the UCL Sports Ground, their first league draw since
October after a run of 13 wins and just four losses in
that time.
This came after it was confirmed that Martyn
Olorenshaw’s side had secured the league title,
amassing an unreachable points total of 63 last week.
Chances were few and far between for both sides,
neither of whom could properly grasp control of the
game. Blues were, though, able to put in another
brilliant shift defensively, scarcely allowing their
opponents any sort of sight on goal and securing their
second consecutive clean sheet.
The golden opportunity fell to forward Alezandro Da
Silva, who showed great pace to charge through on goal
but, when faced with the one-on-one with Watford’s
goalkeeper, pulled his shot inches wide.
Speaking to BCFC.com post-match, Under-18s Lead
Coach, Olorenshaw spoke of his delight at being named
league champions, despite not executing the perfect
performance versus the Hornets.
“We found out we had secured the league title on
Tuesday after Barnsley lost, which was really nice and a
great moment for the lads.
“As for the game itself, I think that a draw was a fair
result. We gave the ball away too much in the first-half
but were slightly better in the second where I felt like
we created the better chances.
“Now we have to focus on the tough challenge against
Charlton on Saturday, who we could end up facing in the
play-offs in a few weeks.”
The Under-18s are back in action when they host the
Addicks at the Knighthead Performance Centre on
Saturday 4 May, kick-off 12pm.
