MESSAGE FROM DIANE RECINOS, EdD 

Dear Graduates, 

Congratulations – you did it! 

Today, you join the ranks of over 65,000 Berkeley College alumni 

from around the globe. Now is your time to make your mark on 

the world. 

As you embark on a new chapter in your lives, it is important to 

reflect on the journey that brought you here today. I have witnessed 

firsthand the remarkable resilience and perseverance displayed by 

each and every one of you. 

As you look to the future, remember that the road ahead will 

undoubtedly be filled with its own set of challenges. But armed with 

the resilience and perseverance that have carried you this far, I have 

no doubt you will rise to meet whatever obstacles come your way. 

Berkeley College has a 93-year mission of empowering students to achieve lifelong success in dynamic careers. 

You are part of this important legacy. 

Whatever you choose for your next chapter, dream big. Remember that learning is a lifelong endeavor. Continue 

to learn and grow, and most of all, to pay it forward. 

Remember the lessons you have learned, the relationships you have built, and the challenges you have overcome

FACULTY SPEAKER 

Lisa Karakas is a Professor of English and English as a Second Language courses in the 

Berkeley College Division of General Education. She joined Berkeley College in 1996 

and teaches a variety of online, onsite, and blended English courses. 

Karakas loves helping her students gain confidence and improve their English skills, as 

well as collaborating with her Berkeley College colleagues on various committees. 

Karakas is a violinist who has played at numerous Berkeley College events over the 

years. Her other hobbies include photography, traveling to theme parks to ride some of 

the most intense roller coasters on the planet, and anything science-fiction related. 

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from The State University of New York at 

Stony Brook and a Master of Science in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from The State 

University of New York at Albany. 

Her wish for Berkeley College graduates is that their careers will be as personally fulfilling as hers has been. 

ALUMNI OF THE YEAR AWARD RECIPIENT 

Jaime Wynn is a seasoned leader in corporate strategy who joined the Jimmy Choo 

business in 2016 as the Vice President of Sales and Planning. She was appointed 

President of Jimmy Choo Americas in 2021 and is leading the region into growth as a 

full luxury, lifestyle omni-channel brand. 

Wynn’s more than 25 years of experience spans global brand businesses and multiple 

product categories. She spent 12 years at the Jones Group appointed to various senior 

leadership roles, where she successfully managed out the Ralph Lauren licensed 

business and launched the Jones NY Signature brand. Wynn was instrumental in the 

Anne Klein rebuild and rebrand of the famous lion logo. Prior to joining Jimmy Choo, 

Wynn was a Director of Global Business Planning at LVMH. She helped lead the Marc 

Jacobs mono-brand strategy in 2016 and was instrumental in cost structure realignment 

improving bottom line profit. 

Wynn began her career as a buyer and attributes her success to critical thinking, strategic planning, and leadership 

style. Her strong relationships over the years have allowed her to continue to build and sustain brand loyalty. Wynn 

holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Fashion Merchandising and Management from Berkeley College. 

Wynn is passionate and committed to progressing diversity in the fashion industry, and sits on the Capri Diversity 

and Inclusion Council. She is also the Executive Sponsor of the Capri ERG, BOLD (Black Organized Leaders and 

Doers). Most rewarding, she advocates for and mentors young students who are eager to enter the fashion industry.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARD RECIPIENT 

Tiffany Melone, a woman of remarkable resilience, is graduating with a Bachelor of 

Business Administration in Health Services Management. Her journey has taken her across 

the United States, and she now resides in Clifton, NJ. 

At the age of 17, Tiffany embarked on a solo journey, confronting homelessness, domestic 

violence, and other struggles head-on. After working as a server for 15 years, she enrolled 

at Berkeley College in Woodland Park. Inspired by both her father’s love of learning 

and her children, Tiffany persevered in pursuing higher education despite physical and 

emotional barriers. During her time at Berkeley College, she survived three heart attacks 

and learned to grow through the depression that resulted from those life-changing episodes. 

Tiffany earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in Health Services Administration – Medical Insurance, Billing, 

and Coding, as well as certifications as a Certified Professional Coder, Certified Billing and Coding Specialist, and 

HIPAA for behavioral health. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, served as secretary of the 

National Society of Leadership and Success, and led the Mamas and Papas Club in support of student parents. 

Tiffany now helps others through her work in the behavioral health field, a career that has enriched her empathy and 

compassion. 

She encourages others to seek support in their loved ones, use the resources at their fingertips, never stop learning, and 

always be themselves. When facing struggles, she imparts the African proverb: “Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” 

STUDENT SPEAKER 

Jazmin Peralta Nunez is an Honors Scholar, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 

Justice Studies – Criminal Justice, with a concentration in Homeland Security. She is a 

resident of the Bronx, NY. 

Jazmin was born and raised in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and emigrated to the 

United States in 2019. Despite the numerous challenges and obstacles she faced as an 

immigrant in the United States, Jazmin was undeterred in her pursuit of higher education. 

During her time at Berkeley College, Jazmin served as a Student Government Association 

Representative, was president of Prospanica Club, and president of the Hispanic Familia 

Club, where she worked to promote cultural awareness and unity among students. She 

is a member of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society, served as a Federal Work Study student in 

the Financial Aid Office, and was regularly named to the President’s List for her academic achievements. Through the 

Honors Program, she was recognized as a Community Service MVP for her dedication to volunteerism and contributions 

to her community. 

Jazmin’s resilience, determination, and commitment serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of 

education and the importance of giving back. 

To her fellow graduates, and to those considering pursuing a college education, Jazmin quotes Harriet Tubman: “Every 

great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion 

to reach for the stars to change the world.”

ACADEMIC REGALIA AND SYMBOLS 

ACADEMIC REGALIA 

The academic regalia are a carryover from the medieval university to modern college life. The robes and colorful 

hoods resemble those worn by scholars and churchmen as early as the 12th century. Then, as now, the garments 

distinguished the wearer as a scholar, but they also had a practical element. The robes were warm, and the hoods 

could be drawn up to protect the scholar against drafts in unheated buildings. 

The gown distinguishes the Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees, and, at the same time, recognizes the 

university that awarded the degree. The Associate’s gown is plain with open sleeves and is worn closed. The Bachelor’s 

gown has pointed sleeves and is also worn closed. The Master’s gown has oblong sleeves cut away at the elbow, and the 

Doctorate degree gown has bell-shaped sleeves with velvet stripes. The hood’s lining matches the color of the graduate’s 

university, and the color of the border velvet indicates the special area of study (tan–Business; white–Arts and Letters; 

purple–Law; lemon–Library; green–Medicine; light blue–Education; blue–Philosophy; gold–Science; and citron–Social 

Work). Members of Berkeley’s Board of Trustees wear Berkeley College’s ceremonial regalia. 

THE MACE 

The mace, once a weapon of war, became a ceremonial standard in the 16th century. The 

walnut-fluted mace has the college crest on both sides. Carried by the faculty marshal in the 

academic procession, the mace is a symbol of authority. 

The use of a mace during college graduation ceremonies combines symbolic communication 

with the principle of vested authority at the most traditional and sacred of academic 

celebrations. The mace adds meaning and dignity to the commencement ritual. It reminds 

both participants and spectators that education is one of the most cherished attributes of a 

free and democratic society.

ACADEMIC REGALIA AND SYMBOLS 

BERKELEY COLLEGE TASSEL 

The tassel, which can be seen hanging from the mortarboard of a graduate’s cap bound together by a metal clip, is a traditional 

aspect of commencement regalia. This item is significant because it serves as a symbol of academic accomplishment and rank. 

During most ceremonies, a student’s tassel will be displayed on the right side of their cap prior to receiving their diploma. The 

tassel is later moved to the left side of their cap to signify that one has graduated. 

CORDS, STOLES, AND MEDALLIONS 

Cords, stoles, and medallions are worn around the necks of graduates, signifying academic honors or other achievements. 

Cords are made of braided nylon in a variety of colors. Stoles are panels of silk that can be embroidered with letters or symbols. 

Medallions are made of metal or glass-like material and hang on colored ribbon.
