Teaching teenagers
how to tap in 12 weeks
TEACHING 50 teenagers to
tap dance in 12 weeks is no
mean feat, but choreographer
Hannah Clarkson has managed
to get everyone in step in
time for a fast-moving school
production of Anything Goes.
“It was an overwhelming
challenge, initially, and I was
concerned whether our young
cast would literally be able ‘to
step up’,” the Christ’s College
director of drama said.
“However, our wonderful
performers from College and
Rangi Ruru Girls’ School were
determined to take the lead –
even though they had never
worn tap shoes.”
Cast member and final
year student Josh Durant has
been relishing the chance to
perform on stage in the Cole
Porter musical classic, while
navigating the many demands
on his time.
He has been taking tap dance
lessons alongside perfecting
his performance as Moonface
Martin, playing in his band,
Off Track, and preparing for
the upcoming 1st XI hockey
season. • Turn to page 7
Second bib roll-out reinforces positive message
ANOTHER 1700 ‘Keep it
Positive’ sideline bibs have
handed out to rugby clubs and
schools to promote better sideline
behaviour.
The Canterbury Rugby Ray
White Real Estate initiative
follows up the campaign from
last year when 500 bibs were
handed out to junior coaches,
secondary school and senior club
teams.
The bibs to help identify
who should be on the sideline,
whilst reinforcing the message
to provide safe, positive
environments for players,
coaches, referees and spectators.
“The feedback was really
positive from the first roll-out last
year, which lead to more clubs
and schools asking how they
too can get on board,” CRFU
community rugby manager Fiona
Smith said.
“Many of the clubs and schools
have been looking for ways to
clearly identify who their reserve
players are, but the cost has been
a barrier. So this not only helps
them and the match officials, but
also helps get the Keep it Positive
message out further too. Having
Ray White’s assistance in this has
been invaluable.”
The bibs have been supplied
to all premier division 1 men
and women’s teams across
Christchurch, North Canterbury
and Ellesmere, clubs and
schools.
The bright yellow bibs are now
worn by junior rugby coaches
who referee games, reserves at
school and senior rugby, right
through to Canterbury’s NPC
and FPC squads.
Former refugees
bringing a taste
of home to cafe
• By Geoff Sloan
FORMER AFGHAN refugees
have been cooking up a storm,
feeding hungry netballers.
The first day of the outdoor
netball season at South Hagley
Park on Saturday attracted a lot
of players eager to try the variety
of ethnic cuisines on offer at a
special event running alongside
the games.
Share Kai Cafe manager Holly
Griffin said it was a busy first
day.
“Once everyone has a sample
and has a try, they love it. And
we’ve had everyone coming back
for more.
“There was a lot of appreciation
for the opportunity to try
some different cuisines and
learn a bit about some of the
cultures.”
The ‘Share Kai with Purpose’
initiative is a fundraiser for local
ethnic groups.
It’s run out of the new Multicultural
Recreation and Community
Centre, which was the
old netball pavilion.
“We have five groups in our collective,
Afghan, Nepali, Eritrean,
Palestinian and Ukranian.
“Next week (Saturday) will be
Nepali (food), the week after that
Eritrean. They each take a turn.”
Less-traditional international
favourites such as American
hotdogs also featured on the menu
for those with less adventurous
tastes.
City council community
development advisor and centre
establishment manager Viviana
Zanetti said Share Kai was a
good way to start breaking down
barriers.
“Christchurch welcomes about
180 different communities, so it’s
really a diverse and vibrant city.
“This building is really about
showcasing how diverse the
community in Christchurch is.”
The city council-owned
Multicultural Recreation and
Community Centre is run
by a charitable trust, offering
ethnic groups and the wider
community use of the facility at
low cost.
And while the official opening
was just two months ago,
Zanetti said there’s already been
a lot of interest.
The “Share Kai with Purpose”
event will run every Saturday
until the end of August.
YUM: Delicacies from
Afghanistan were on offer
during the first Share Kai
event with hungry netballers
keen to sample the goodies.
Jogging club still going through
its paces after almost 50 years
Burnside
Joggers
and Walkers
president
Geoff Ellis
writes about
the club as
it prepares to mark its
50th jubilee
EVERY SUNDAY at 8.30am,
Burnside joggers and walkers set
off from the rugby clubrooms,
rain, hail or shine, as they have
done for almost 50 years.
The club used to have more
than 100 members. Today, it has
about 25.
The Burnside Joggers and
Walkers Club, under the auspices
of the Burnside Rugby Club, held
its first club run/walk on Sunday,
May 19, 1974. On this exact day
and time 50 years later, they will
continue the tradition as part of
the club’s 50th jubilee celebrations.
The first run took place four
months after the 1974 Commonwealth
Games in Christchurch.
Led by Peter Snell, it attracted
more than 150 runners.
The idea of forming the club
was the brainchild of the late
Colin Currie.
Prior to becoming a jogger,
Currie had been a representative
rugby player for Auckland
and Wellington. He will be
remembered for his part in one
of the greatest Ranfurly Shield
memories.
Canterbury was ahead 18-14 in
the last minute of the game and
hard on attack and there seemed
no major worry for the red and
blacks, Fergie McCormick ranging
on the right ready to clear for
touch. With Currie as hooker for
Auckland he won a tight head.
Mac Herewini put in a kick, the
ball bounced back from the Canterbury
line and Waka Nathan
seized the chance to run around
and score underneath the posts.
The conversion gave Auckland
the win 19-18.
With Currie’s drive for opening
the club in 1974, many
prominent people were invited,
including city councillors and
sports representatives: Jayne
Parkhouse, Val Young, Joan
Harnett, Denis Young, Graham
Dowling, Richard Hadlee and
Arthur Lydiard, just to name a
few.
Sadly, Currie died in 1991.
SPANNING THE DECADES: Club members in 1978 and 2022.
mum
The club continues to cater for
a wide range of ages and abilities,
from teenagers to grandparents,
with members coming from all
walks of life.
Past member and marathon
runner Fred Marett was a well
decorated World War 2 soldier.
At the battle of El Alamein,
with his senior officers killed, he
took command and led his company
to a successful operation in
taking the enemy posts and dugouts.
He was one of six to survive
his company. Marett arose to the
rank of Major and won the Military
Cross. For many years he
was also the parade commander
of the Anzac dawn service at the
Christ Church Cathedral.
Other members include the
club’s “marathon star”, Norman
Chan – 356 marathons so far
and still going. Chan started his
first marathon in 2006.
Beside the regular Sunday
morning runs and walks there
have been regular weekend trips
away, including the Hanmer and
have also been trips overseas to
take part in running and walking
events.
The club has twice hosted
the New Zealand Joggers
Convention.
The Burnside Joggers and
Walkers Club’s 50th jubilee will
be held on Sunday, May 19. The
day starts at 8.30am with a run/
walk from the Burnside Squash
Club (adjacent to the rugby
clubrooms). Walkers can choose
from 5km or 8km, runners from
5km, 8km or 13km. Hot showers
are available afterwards, plus
morning tea. At noon, there’s a
meet-up to view memorabilia,
followed by lunch at the Hornby
Club. Speeches start at 1pm.
debbie.soper@harcourtsgold.co.nz
With the end of the latest financial
year, I’m finding myself on the cusp of
that most critical of business habits;
business planning.
A business plan is the foundation for how to
analyse, articulate and manage the business
you hope to grow and generate in the year
ahead and over my 30 years of doing them
I’ve noticed considerable changes – and good
ones at that.
It’s no longer a matter of ‘numbers’ only.
There’s a much greater appreciation for – and
use of – strategies that consider everything an
individual faces as they endeavour to move
forward in a challenging profession.
Today’s plans usually start with a review
of where you find yourself from a holistic
perspective, sometimes challenging the
writer with questions such as: are you living
the life you want to be? And then moving into
different life fields which can then be further
divided into various categories.
Right at the top is health.
This can include fitness, sleep, diet, overall
wellbeing (both physical and psychological),
as well as connection with others. Essentially,
the ‘Pillars of Health’ that must be in place for
us to flourish.
This is a long way from the plans I did many
years ago. Nobody appreciated then that sleep
is a cornerstone to health and wellbeing, and
that the absence of great sleep hygiene will
absolutely jeopardize your ability to function
at a high level in business.
I know there’s always someone who will say
they don’t need sleep and a lack thereof won’t
affect them, but science disputes this and the
best plans encourage thoughtfulness in this
area.
Fitness is also deeply relevant and beautifully
nuanced in the following sentences written by
an acknowledged real estate guru:
“You need to cultivate a physical practice
(think exercise)
Because it centres you
Challenges you
Because it hurts
Because it’s a form of rest and because it
Makes you a better agent.”
So, today’s plans include these elements
before moving into a large analytical and
financial section.
The best plans challenge the writer to analyse
in depth the business they were able to
generate in the previous year. The actual
numbers of appraisals, listings and sales that
they attempted and completed.
Doing this gives an insight into skill levels and
where greater development needs to occur,
and from this you can then determine what
needs to happen and the results that can be
achieved if you follow through.
My biggest tip here is consistency. Nothing
beats it – not even spasmodic brilliance.
If I’m involved in facilitating business planning
for our large team of consultants, I also like
to include a portion of research and last year
that included a concentrated dive into a book
by author Les McKeown called Predictable
Success. Said to help get organisations and
individuals onto a growth track, it provides
current and valuable insights into the seven
growth stages in any business.
The other thing I find useful is including
practical breakout sessions on subjects such
as social media and its influence, winning
rituals, daily habits and exceptional service,
etc.
Our approach to planning is always
developing, as it should be, with the aim of
educating and enabling people to run great
businesses whilst having a more balanced life.
If it sounds like a load of nonsense, I can only
say that if success leaves clues then following
this framework could be worthwhile. We
currently have the top residential office in the
country (Papanui) for our brand, Harcourts,
and the top office for all brands in New
Zealand, the top office for income and incomeper-sales-consultant,
the number-one office
for auctions and the number-one franchise for
earnings-per-sales-consultant, and we are the
recipient of numerous acknowledgements for
giving back to our communities with financial
help and innovation.
So, if you think a plan’s not necessary, maybe
think again, and if you’d like some help, I’m a
phone call away.
Happy Autumn.
For 1st XI football player
“I absolutely love it. I have
people to come out of their
FLATTENED: After failing structural safety assessments, contractors have demolished the fort playground at Thomson Park.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Petition for improved playground
• By Geoff Sloan
A 1458 signature petition
was presented to the Waitai
Coastal-Burwood-Linwood
Community Board on Monday
asking the council to rethink
its plans for a new playground
at Thomson Park.
Community board
member Alex Hewison
said the playground had to
be demolished but he was
IT’S SET TO be the biggest
planting season yet for the
Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor
with 30 community days in the
calendar.
The native planting season is
now underway until the end of
August at the 602-hectare regeneration
area.
Residential red zone manager
Dave Little said two sites in particular
are getting some extra
unhappy with plans to replace
the old playground with
new modular kit-set design
equipment.
“The petition aims to ensure
that council work with the
board for a better option for
the playground down here at
Thomson Park,” Hewison said.
Residents say the new design
looks “too plastic” and its size
will make the playground
unsuitable for anyone other
attention this season.
“We’ll be putting a focus on
Waikākāriki Horseshoe Lake
between Goodman St and New
Brighton Rd as well as the area
around Belair Close – alongside
Corser Stream for the 2024 season,”
he said.
“Waikākāriki Horseshoe Lake
was a site of a significant settlement
called Te Oranga. A tributary
to the Ōtākaro, Waikākāriki
than small children to use.
Children from across the city
have been using the popular
playground for almost 50 years.
The largely wooden playground
failed a city council
safety assessment due to concerns
over its deterioration and
structural integrity.
Hewison said the playground
had to be demolished.
“Contractors were removing
was rich in wildlife and natural
resources and was a significant
site for mahinga kai.”
The second site, Belair Close,
sits just on the edge of the Travis
Wetland, beside Corser Stream.
“This is opposite the six-yearold
restoration project managed
by Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park,
which means it’s a great way to see
what a planting project might look
like after six years,” Little said.
one of the platforms, and the
entire beam caved in,” Hewison
said.
“It goes to show that it was
a really unsafe playground.
So kudos to the council for
ensuring our safety comes
first.”
Property Management is
Going to Remain Unregulated!
WHAT COULD THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
Is your property manager competent, let alone qualified?
Under the current legislation, anyone can set up a property management company without any qualifications. At Inline
Property Management, we are an accredited property management company with REINZ. We undergo extensive
training and have obtained our property management qualifications.
Do you know what account your rent is being paid into?
There is no requirement for companies to have an audited Trust Account. This means there is no way to know if the
money received as rent is being used to fund their lifestyle. At Inline Property Management, we choose to protect our
landlords by having a Trust Account dedicated to rent payments and this is independently audited on an annual basis.
Does the management of your property suit your needs?
We understand that landlords have different requirements, so we are pleased to offer our CHOICES range. This allows
landlords to choose the services that are right for them. Full management is not the only option. Contact us for more
information regarding the different CHOICES available to you.
Inline Property Management are committed to doing “The Right Thing” to protect the interests of both
The perfect pair: Sweet and savoury
Nigel Slater
warms things up
for autumn with a
comforting baked
pear dessert and a
wholesome, sustaining
savoury tart
Baked pears and
oat crumble
Serves 3-6
Ingredients
For the pears:
100g caster sugar
A litre of water
6 pears
Juice of ½ a lemon
For the oat crumble:
100g butter
90g demerara sugar
95g rolled oats
75g plain flour
1 tsp sea salt
To finish:
50g butter
50g caster sugar
250g blackberries
Directions
To poach the pears, bring the
sugar and water to the boil in a
large saucepan. Peel the pears
and either keep them whole or
slice them in half and scoop out
the core with a teaspoon.
WARMING: Make the most of seasonal fruit with baked
pears and oat crumble.
PHOTO: GETTY
Halve the lemon and squeeze
the juice into syrup.
Lower the pears into the bubbling
syrup and turn the heat
down to a simmer. Let them
cook until almost tender.
For the oat crumble: Set the
oven at 160 deg C fan. Put the
butter and demerara sugar in the
bowl of a food mixer and beat
until thoroughly combined.
Remove the bowl from the machine
and rub in the rolled oats
and flour with your fingertips,
then add the salt.
Turn the mixture out on to a
parchment-lined baking sheet,
spreading it in a rough, single
layer. The texture should be loose
and crumbly. Don’t be tempted
to press it into a flat sheet.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until
lightly crisp and pale-biscuit
coloured. Remove from the oven
and set aside. It will be soft at
first but will crisp as it cools.
Set the oven to 180 deg C fan.
Remove the pears from their
syrup and transfer them to a
roasting tin. Keep a few tablespoons
of the syrup.
Add the butter and caster
sugar to the pears, then put them
in the oven and bake for about
25 minutes until the fruit is fully
tender — keep an eye on things
so it doesn’t burn.
Tip in the blackberries and a
couple of tablespoons of the reserved
pear cooking syrup, then
return to the oven till the pears
are sticky and glossy and flushed
pink from the berry juices.
Break the oat crumble into
pieces and serve with the pears,
1 or 2 per person depending on
their size, and their syrup.
Courgette, feta and
tarragon tart
The puff pastry lends a flaky
lightness to the tart, but is
slightly less straightforward than
using shortcrust. Either will
produce a sound crust for the
tender filling.
Serves 6
Ingredients
2 large courgettes (about 500g)
1 Tbsp fine sea salt
325g puff pastry
2 eggs, plus 1 extra yolk
150ml double cream
200g feta
2 Tbsp tarragon
10g grated parmesan
Directions
You will need a 20cm tart tin.
Grate the courgettes using the
coarse disc attachment of a food
processor (or the very coarse side
of a box grater). Put the grated
courgettes into a mixing bowl,
sprinkle with the salt and leave
for 45 minutes.
Roll the pastry into a disc
large enough to line the tart tin
then lower into place, ushering it
up the side of the tin with your
fingers but without stretching
the pastry. A little overhang is
fine. Place on a baking sheet.
Rest the pastry in the fridge for
25 minutes.
Set the oven at 180 deg C fan
and place a pizza stone or a thick
baking sheet into the oven to get
hot.
Place a piece of tin foil or
baking parchment inside the
tart case on top of the pastry
and fill with baking beans. Bake
the pastry, placing the tart tin
on top of the preheated baking
sheet or pizza stone, for about 12
minutes. Remove tart and tray
from the oven, then carefully lift
out the beans and foil. Return to
the oven for 5 minutes until the
surface of the pastry is dry to the
touch.
Lower the oven heat to 160 deg
C fan. In a large mixing bowl,
lightly beat the eggs, then pour
in the double cream. Crumble
in the feta and add the chopped
tarragon and a little black
pepper.
Firmly squeeze the water from
the courgettes, then stir them
into the custard. Transfer the
mixture to the pastry shell. Dust
the grated parmesan over the
surface and carefully return to
the oven. Bake for 30 minutes
or until puffed and golden. Rest
for 10 minutes before slicing and
serving.
Economical Swift playful but not exciting
MISERLY FUEL economy
has underpinned the success
of the last three generations of
the Suzuki Swift 5-door hatch,
with the new hybrid variant the
thriftiest of them all.
According to combined fuel
consumption tests, the Swift
Hybrid’s 4.1L/100km has the
potential, if the driver has the
discipline to go easy on the
throttle, to travel about 900
kilometres on a full tank of petrol.
The starting point for this
likeable little fuel miser is the
$28,990 mid-spec GLX, or you
can opt for something more posh
with the $31,990 RS. A two-tone
roof is $500 extra but does add a
bit of affordable visual pizzazz.
The hybrid RS Swift added to
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
the Swift Catalogue two years ago
is just the ticket for those who
want hybrid thrift, but don’t want
to go frugal on the finer things of
motoring life.
Standard equipment includes
electrically folding exterior
mirrors, climate control air
conditioning, steering wheel
mounted paddle shifters, keyless
entry and push button start. It
also has the added safety buffer
of Suzuki’s advanced forward
detection system, lane keep
function, lane departure warning,
weaving alert and blind spot
monitoring.
Braking is upgraded over the
GLX with disc brakes all round
and dual sensor brake support
comprising a monocular camera
Ratings out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 6; Styling 7; Value
for money 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 6.5
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
that “sees” mid-to-long distance
and can detect pedestrians.
Mechanically, the cheaper
GLX and RS share the same 1.2
litre 4-cylinder motor. Teamed
with the Suzuki Smart Hybrid
system, this mild hybrid uses a
motor to support fuel-consuming
standing starts and acceleration
and utilizes automatic stop-start
with the petrol motor shutting
down when the car is stationary
in traffic.
Together the 1.2L engine and
electric motor have a combined
power output of 64kW, which
by today’s hybrid standards is
modest, but then this is older
generation hybrid technology.
This rather limp power output
delivers a more pedestrian rather
than electrifying performance.
However, the sedate progress
give you more time to appreciate
the fuel savings the motor is
making plus impressively low
emissions of 94g/km.
The lack of performance intent
is mitigated somewhat by the
engine’s smoothness and low
noise levels. However, I was
disappointed at just how little
time the test vehicle operated
in electric-only mode over flat
terrain in around town driving.
Hopefully an all-new Swift due
here in the next few months does
better.
Despite its advancing years, the
current Swift remains a clever
design. A good example of this
is the more compact engine
compartment that frees up cabin
and load space, although never in
copious amounts.
A clean modern fascia complete
with seven drink holders is
a masterstroke, but not the
prevalence of hard plastic surfaces
throughout the cabin that are
a blunt reminder of the Swift’s
budget car DNA.
MacPherson strut and
coil spring suspension have
successfully underpinned Swifts
for a while. Further refinements
made for this model provide small
but worthwhile improvements.
It’s now more adept at absorbing
bumps and vehicle occupant
comfort has improved, but the
suspension can be noisy over high
frequency bumps during lowspeed
town driving.
This Swift trademark agility is
better than ever and the steering
crisp and responsive, making
for a playful and engaging drive
over undulating roads, and is an
expected bonus in a mini hatch in
this price bracket.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides
short term emergency or planned respite care
for tamariki when they need extra support due
