OUNDERS’ LETTER
Happy anniversary to us! Pulp Design Studios is celebrating
17 years in business, and we can’t believe how quickly the
time has flown by! We have achieved so much over the years
and we’re celebrating all of those major milestones in this
issue of ICON. From new offices across the country to our new Pulp
Properties division to awards and product lines, we’re giving you our 17
biggest wins since we opened our door.
Pulp is always reinventing and redefining not only how we do business,
but how innovative our interior designs can be. This is our Renovation
Issue of ICON, and we are showcasing some of our most fabulous
redesigned homes. One of our favorites is a 1980s Seattle house that we
transformed into an edgy modern treehouse.
We’re also revealing one of our most impactful before-and-after
projects. It received the most press and the most buzz when it debuted
(can you guess which one it is??). We also give you the inside story on our
micro-renovation service, offer our best bathroom renovation tips, and
showcase the trends that are coming to home design this year.

Pulp Design Studios Transformed a 1980s Seattle Home
into an Edgy Modern Treehouse
Projects can evolve and change, and Pulp loves to work with our clients
through every phase and process. For this 1980s Seattle home, the
client originally brought our team in to update the furnishings for a
more modern and cool style. The client was so happy with the results
that she decided she wanted to renovate the home to make the spaces more
functional and updated. Pulp planned an innovative redesign that transformed
the home into a stunning “modern treehouse” that has a warmth and an edgy
elemental style.

The home’s location on a tree-lined property inspired the organic materials and chic neutral palette.

RENOVATION
In the formal living room,
Pulp opened up the partition
wall that separated the family
room and kitchen from the
living room, creating more
space and flow within the
interiors. The furniture is
neutral but has an edge to
it, and the natural textures
of concrete and wood are
highlighted with soft textiles
and metals.
With floor-to-ceiling windows, the home is flooded with
natural light. Pulp selected furnishings and finishes that would
complement the modern architecture, but would also offer an
organic style inspired by the trees and views just outside.

RENOVATION
Pulp layered neutral tones and lush textures throughout the living spaces. Curves and soft shaping balance the
sharp lines and angles of the architecture. And the interiors are more defined and functional for the family.
In the dining room above, we featured a modern photograph by Kevin Dotolo.

The original kitchen was very stark and had drab-colored cabinets and walls. Pulp’s renovation included new cabinetry
in a warm wood that reflected an updated organic style for this modern house in the trees. Stone with natural striations
complement the elemental tones in the space. Modern details like a sculptural light fixture offer an updated style.

Pulp designed functional storage in the
kitchen’s renovation that supports our client’s
love of cooking and entertaining, including
thoughtful details like a coffee bar and
specialized cabinets and drawers.

For a serene primary suite, Pulp wove together
clean lines with natural textures and neutral
colors. Nature-inspired elements like wood, stone,
and metal highlight the modern spaces for an
effortless and cozy yet sophisticated design.

Unlike many homes, the guest suites are
anything but afterthoughts. Pulp continued
the material story in these rooms, including a
stunning terrazzo floor in the bathroom.

Part of the renovation included an addition
that was originally part of the garage. This
new space includes a guest bathroom that
offers Pulp’s signature style of unexpected and
bold details. It is layered with dramatic stones
and textured tiles that make a distinctive
statement.

Change is
Good
Some of Pulp’s best renovations take months to complete - and we’re always up front with our
clients about that. But some clients have so much fun with us that they want to continue adding
to their homes beyond that! For a fabulous home in Laredo, we finished the main living spaces,
outdoor rooms, and a fun playroom and then added a nursery for a new addition (see the last
issue of ICON!). Now we’re working on the dining room, pantry, and home office, as well as a few
other tweaks. Here we take you behind the scenes to see our renovation progress!

Part of the renovation for the dining room
was adding those beautiful arched doors at
one end of the room. Obviously there’s still
a lot of work to do, but we’ve already added
a gorgeous wallpaper to the ceiling to draw
the eye up!

Our client wanted a larger pantry for her
china collections, her grandmother’s silver
platters and other entertaining and cooking
accessories. The office is connected through
that open doorway, allowing her to work from
home on a desk instead of her dining table.
The scheme for these spaces includes an
amazing toile fabric.

Before &
after
A Showstopping Reinvention
We’re asked all the time about our favorite projects. We love all of our
Pulp clients, but when it comes to before-and-after projects, one does
stand out for our team: It’s the Kips Bay Showhouse in Dallas! There
are projects that really elevate interior design firms, and this was one
of those for us. Not only did we create jaw-dropping interiors from
very awkward spaces, but the final photos also ended up in major press
around the country! This showhouse highlights Pulp’s talent for crafting
wow-worthy rooms that take advantage of every square inch for the ultimate
functionality. Here’s a look at this showstopping renovation.
BEFORE & AFTER
after
Pulp was assigned a loft area that had two rooms connected by a long hallway. It was accessed by the
stairs you see above, and was a very traditional and dark space with awkward corners and nooks.
Pulp wanted to make this a very functional area for a woman on the go, so we determined that
the spaces would include an office, a Zoom room, a bathroom, and a “sinner’s den.” The rooms are
an homage to a modern woman, a paradox who is both wise about her business and also wickedly
amusing in her off time.
Pulp went with a very clean color palette so it would be a space with no distractions. This woman is in
charge and all business, but obviously, she wants her surroundings to also inspire her. So there’s a lot
of art and very fashion-forward seating.

Directly off the office on the opposite side from
the hall and lounge was a small nook with a
window. The Pulp team decided to create a small
space that could operate as a Zoom room. Every
Zoom backdrop needs to be fabulous, so the
Porter Teleo wallpaper was the perfect selection.
To keep that artistic vibe going, Pulp hired a
muralist to create a ceiling that was designed to
look as if the shapes of the wallpaper were taking
flight. The mural extends into the office as if the
creativity couldn’t be contained.
The Pulp team worked with the amazing More Design +
Build to design a custom cabinet that would be a hidden
passage from the office to the fabulous lounge at the other
end of their space. The doors of the custom cabinet include
Innovations’ Origami wallcovering, designed to look like a
unique wood pattern.
This created a The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe feeling.
It was a creative idea that really made people stop in their
tracks. That innovative thinking is a Pulp signature!

BEFORE & AFTER
Through the custom cabinetry, a hallway leads
to the lounge on the other side of the loft. Pulp
wanted this passage to be more magical and
unique, like a hidden world or a speakeasy
entrance. This raw space did originally have a
bathroom, but it was more of an afterthought
and didn’t make good use of the space.
The Ann Sacks tile floor was selected because it
offered a look inspired by Oz’s yellow brick road.
The Pulp team again wanted to inspire a feeling
of stepping into a surreal world on the way to an
exciting adventure.
And a water closet is a functional and necessary
room, but that does not mean it should be boring.
Pulp wanted it to be unexpected and eyecatching,
and the dripping wallcovering by Calico
hits the mark. The light fixture from Luke Lamp
Co. is also completely out-of-the-box.

The original space for the lounge was very vanilla, with a lot of doors and unused closets.
This area’s transformation is definitely the most dramatic for Pulp’s Wise & Wicked design!

Pulp is known for bold and adventurous design, for rooms that are super-dynamic but are also livable. In the lounge, the mood
is dramatic, quirky, and unexpected. A sense of fun and fabulousness reveals itself in the evocative wallpaper, shapely sofa, and
exquisitely unique chairs. Two closets were redesigned to be shelves and storage, offering a more practical use of the space.
Custom cabinetry on the bottom of the shelves was designed to hide a myriad of “sins,” like a bar cabinet or storage for cards and dice.

We can hardly believe how the time has flown by. We’ve accomplished so much and have celebrated
some BIG milestones, so we thought we would highlight 17 of our most exciting moments at Pulp.

D HOME’S BEST DESIGNERS.
This month also marks the 10th year (yes, 10th!) that Pulp
has been named one of the top design firms in Dallas!
That’s a huge honor and we’re so thankful to our clients
and to D Home for recognizing us each year.
1EXPANDING TO SEATTLE.
Did you know that we
started out together in
Dallas? Beth moved to
Seattle to open a second
location a few years after
Pulp launched, and it has
been an amazing move
that expanded the reach
of our business.

PULP’S FABRIC COLLECTIONS.
In 2018, we were thrilled to launch our
first fabric collection with S. Harris,
inspired by travel and adventure. It’s
been popular beyond our expectations!
And we were so excited to launch a
second collection for the commercial
and contract world soon after. Also FYI
– many of our fabrics are available as
wallcoverings and finished goods, too
(see page 32)!

KIPS BAY DALLAS.
Pulp was assigned an awkward space
that included 2 rooms joined by a
hallway and bathroom at Kips Bay
Dallas. We love design challenges so we
made the most of the interior space with
a Wise & Wicked theme. See more of
this space on page 34.
PULP PROPERTIES.
The Pulp duo is always thinking out of the box, so we recently created a new
division called Pulp Properties. Under that division, we opened a shoppable
5vacation rental in Palm Springs and a commercial property in Dallas.
6
DXV DESIGN.
Another pivotal moment for Pulp was when we were asked by DXV to be part of its
Design Panel in 2016. We were asked to create a bathroom with products from DXV
that would also pay homage to an iconic cities. Interestingly, we were assigned Palm
Springs, which of course we loved. That midcentury modern bathroom design helped
showcase our signature adventurous style and really made a big splash in the design
world when it was featured in DXV’s national ad campaign.

When it comes to gorgeous rooms,
Pulp has been honored to receive
many awards for its creativity and
style. Those include the Luxe Red
Awards, Paper City Awards, Gray
Awards and awards from Modern
Luxury. In fact, we are finalists this
year for a few Red awards, which
will be announced in just a few
weeks (fingers crossed)!
The hidden wine room you see here
was honored with an Editor’s Pick
award for the Gray Awards.
HAUTE HARDWARE.
It’s amazing to think about
today, but the one thing
that really started all of our
product design and licensed
collections was a little star.
We were looking for a very
specific hardware design and
could never find it. So we
designed it! And today that
Starburst Pull is still a BIG
seller for Pulp, now available
in four fabulous finishes.

With a forward-thinking approach to both commerce and
creativity, Pulp has established a unique viewpoint that combines
luxury design with a flair for the unexpected. And that has meant
that many brands have turned to us to represent them and to
guide their future strategies. We’ve been honored to serve

you’re looking at now. This gorgeous and glossy publication – on its 11th
edition – showcases Pulp’s latest projects, offers fantastic design and home 13tips, and gives insight into how the interior design process unfolds.

One thing most people don’t realize
is that you have no control over what
space you’re assigned in a showhome.
Sometimes you get a challenging area
of the house, but it’s what you do with it
that makes ALLLL the difference! When
we were assigned an entry and stairwell
for the Traditional Home showhouse
in Dallas, we brought that iconic bold
style that we’re known for. It created
a showstopper moment before guests
were even 10 feet into the house!

Pulp has received SO much editorial
coverage over our 17-year history and
we are proud of every single piece.

Video was a HUGE game changer for the
Pulp team. We were early adopters of the
medium, featuring interviews with our
clients, walkthroughs of our projects, and
behind-the-scenes looks at our product
and interior design processes. Pulp TV is
part of our media arm that includes our
popular blog and ICON magazine.
DESIGN BOOK FEATURE.
Pulp’s Wise & Wicked space was
showcased in Carl Dellatore’s

Interiors from Rizzoli. Our space was
definitely maximalist, and we loved
being featured in such an iconic book.

6 tips for
BATHROOM RENOVATIONS
Bathrooms are at the top of most renovation lists, whether it’s powder rooms or primary bathrooms.
Pulp loves to recreate these spaces so they are stunning and have lots of functional bells & whistles.
Here are 6 things to consider when reworking a bathroom.
1
Storage
One of the first things we talk about before a bathroom renovation is what
type of storage our clients will need. Not only do you want to plan as much
cabinet and drawer space as possible, but this is the perfect time to plan for
specialty ideas. Custom cabinetry can give you specific storage for makeup,
hair care tools, shaving items, towels, toiletries, and more! Talk to your
designer about everything that you want to store in your primary bathroom
and keep those countertops clean and clear.

Spa Details
A primary bathroom should be an escape, an oasis for the homeowners. This should be the
place where you can (literally) wash away the stress of the day! So plan those spa details
carefully. Some of the things we discuss with clients include a soaking tub, steam shower,
heated floors, towel warmers, TVs, sound speakers, and even sonic wave bathtubs.

BATHROOM RENOVATIONS

Tile
Pulp is a huge fan of tile and the wow-factor
it provides (see our roundup of favorite tiles
on page 56). Not only is tile functional and
easy to clean, but it also can really add an
artistic element to the bathroom. The geometric
glass mosaic tile behind the sink in the
powder room here is almost like a David Hicks
pattern. It looks like a wallcovering, but is a
bolder and more dimensional design.

Color
Color always sets a mood in any room,
and the bathroom is no different. With
all of the amazing tile, paint, and wallpaper
options available, be sure you’re
taking advantage of all the colors
available. Pulp likes to go more neutral
in the primary bathrooms they design.
That allows for a more relaxing vibe. But
in guest baths, powder rooms, and kids’
bathrooms, show some personality and
create those pops of color!
4Lighting
This is one of the MOST
important rooms in the house
for lighting, so layering that
light is key. In the bathroom
here, you can see that sconces
are going to light the way in
the mirror. Note that they are
to the side of the person’s face,
rather then above. Lighting
from above isn’t the most
flattering. Then you also need
brighter canned lights, and an
amazing statement light. This
type of lighting plan offers
bold light for tasks and quieter
lighting for relaxing in the tub!

The Details
We take care of every single detail
in our clients’ renovations, including
a smart electrical plan so there’s an
outlet right where it’s needed. Other
details include vanity areas, statement
lights, window treatments, and seating.
Remember that those details can
really determine how much you love
your new bathroom!

Tantalizing Tile Style
In a renovation, tile is one of our favorite materials for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms,
entries, and more! Tiles can add pattern, color, subtle visual interest, and texture. And in those
ultra-functional spaces, tile is also easy to clean and care for. It’s like the magic material!
THE CLASSIC
Subway tile is a
long-term classic
for a reason. This
style delivers on a
timeless look that
everyone loves. We
like to mix things
up with thinner
subway tiles,
different colors of
grout, and subways
with a bit of texture.
THE BOLD &
THE BEAUTIFUL
Tile also gives you a
great way to express
some personality in
a space. For the pool
room Pulp designed,
we added a wavy
pattern that mimics
the pool just outside.
It’s a cheeky look,
but it’s also superfunctional
in a room
that needs to deal
with a lot of moisture.
PATTERN PLAY
In the floor of
this bold black
bathroom, Pulp
wanted to add some
visual interest that
could compete
with the drama of
the space. Those
patterned tiles
are the perfect
complement. And
they also look like
a woven rug, which
works well with the
hall rug just outside.
DIMENSIONAL
DESIGN
Tile can also function
as art for the walls.
In this Laredo
restaurant, we
wanted a punch of
color and pattern, so
we used a green and
white tile that looks
like modern art!

PULP x NOIR
Pulp loves to use multifunctional pieces in their projects. Rooms can be reinvented as a family grows

up space in their rooms, so this offers
a unique way to hide them away! The
bottom section is also the perfect height
for a four-legged friend to reach their
dinner. And the shelves offer storage for
treats, leashes, toys, and more.
Mudroom
No matter the size of your home, everyone can use more storage!
We love how versatile this cabinet is with its wide shelves. One
of the first ideas that our dynamic duo came up with is to use it in
an entry as a very chic “mudroom.” This is where you would store
shoes, bags, mail, hats, jackets and more, keeping them out of sight
and organized!

Cocktail Bar
The Pulp team loves a good cocktail (be
sure to see our newest cocktail recipe on
page 72)! So of course we love the idea
of a bar cabinet. The shelves are perfect
for glassware, cocktail shakers, liqueurs,
garnishes and more. In this case, we
would use the bottom two shelves for
items that aren’t used as often (like that
rare bottle of scotch), keeping the upper
cabinet ready for the mixologist!

COLOR STORY
Pulp loves working with clients who are unafraid of bold ideas. When this family of lawyers
in Seattle brought us on board, they told us their top goal was a brighter home. Here’s the
story of how we designed a colorful palette for the home they adore!
In the dining room, Pulp used a gorgeous coral on the chairs,
adding the stunning jewel tones in the nearby living space.
The bold blue tile floor in the breakfast area is not only a wow moment,
it also inspired the palette for the kitchen cabinetry. Keeping the walls
white allows the light to bounce through these rooms. And it serves to
give each color story its moment of impact.
Incredible details like an inglenook fireplace weren’t getting their moment
to shine because this house was so dark and dated. The family was ready to
embrace bold colors and adventurous design ideas, and Pulp delivered with a
striking palette of bright colors, presented against a stark white background
to make even more of an impact.
We also framed the inglenook fireplace in a deep chocolate color to help give
it the attention it deserves. Keeping each color as a bright jewel tone allows
these dramatic hues to still work well together, flowing from room to room in
a chic and sophisticated way.

SHOPPING trip
Pulp Design Studios is known for unique and one-of-a-kind finds for our clients’ homes.
We scour every trade show, gallery, and secret source to find those amazing designs and
ideas that will really make interiors stand out. Here’s a look behind the scenes at a recent
shopping trip we took to Mercanteinfiera Parma, an Italian show featuring vintage furnishings
and original art. Can you guess which pieces we brought back with us?
Parma is a UNESCO recognized City of
Gastronomy that was established over
1,000 years ago in Italy. This beautiful city
was full of art and architecture that offered
endless inspiration for the Pulp team.
Vintage furniture, antiques, midcentury
modern finds, art, accessories, glass
and more were displayed by over 1,000
vendors. These are non-production items
that are almost all one of a kind!
Pulp’s cofounders Beth Dotolo and Carolina Gentry were given VIP access to the oldest and
largest fair in Europe. They were among the first “in the trade” to shop the stunning furniture
and accessories on display.

A bathtub with a fabulous view! This kitchen reno is close to the finish line That’s a heated floor under the shower tile!
Pulp’s micro-renovation package offers smart home refreshes and furnishings packages with
a nip-and-tuck approach to updating a home. In a micro-renovation, our team designs small
improvements that pay off big time! In the Dallas home you see here, for example, we crafted
updates that included fixtures, lighting, wallpaper, paint, drapery, and furnishings. The space
that required the most work was this media room. We designed paneled walls to add visual
interest and to help with acoustics. We also made sure that there are plenty of speakers
installed so the surround sound will be amazing, and we added the stone fireplace.

SHAKE it UP
Spritz up your Summer
the Hidalgo Spritz
This refreshing summer cocktail is inspired by
global travel. Named for Pulp’s Hidalgo pattern,
the recipe combines a Mexican mojito with Italian
prosecco for an internationally delicious drink.
INGREDIENTS (serves 1)
2 Sprigs of Fresh Orange Mint (or regular Mint)
.5 oz. St. Germain
4 oz. Chilled Prosecco
2 oz. Chilled Soda Water
2 dashes of Orange Bitters
Garnish
Fresh Orange Mint (or regular Mint)
EQUIPMENT
Glassware of your choice
Muddler or Wooden spoon
INSTRUCTIONS
Pick the leaves from the fresh orange mint and
place in a glass. First add the elderflower cordial
and orange bitters - muddle gently.
Add 4 ounces of procesecco and 2 ounces of
club soda. Top with ice, Gently stir to combine.
Garnish with mint sprig.
